[Elecraft] MD2 and K3 Rear Connector

2010-01-29 Thread John Huffman
Hi -

I would like to hook my Elecraft MD2 to the rear microphone connector of
my K3.

I'll get a small box and mount a male 8-pin connector on one end for the
microphone and a cable to a 1/8" plug (stereo or mono?) on the other end
to plug into the K3 rear panel.

What pins get connected? How is bias connected? Does someone already
make this adapter?

[Elecraft] K2 Use of KUSB cable with the K2

2010-01-29 Thread KM4VX

I realize this topic is not new, but it is confusing to review the archives
when searching this question. The KUSB is sold to support the K3. It is not
advertised to support the K2. Can it be used out of the box to support the
K2? Can I plug it into the serial port of the K2 (okay not a real serial
port but looks like it) and then connect it to a USB port on my laptop
without damaging the K2? I thought there might be a good reason why
ELECRAFT does not list it for use with the K2 as well as the K3. I seem to
recall a warning about damaging the K2 when using the wrong interface, but
can't find it in the K2 manual or module building instructions. Any help
would be appreciated. Many thanks, and this reflector is addictive! Ron

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Use of KUSB cable with the K2

2010-01-29 Thread Brian Machesney
Ron,

This topic has been discussed over just the past few days here on the
reflector.

Apparently, people are having different experiences. My K2 works by plugging
the K2's ** serial cable ** into the end of the KUSB cable and setting
up the application software to run at 4800 / N / 8 / 1.

It seems that ONE SHOULD NOT PLUG THE KUSB INTO THE K2'S AUXIO JACK for risk
of damage to the K2.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Use of KUSB cable with the K2

2010-01-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ron, Brian,

Yes, that is correct - the KUSB should not be plugged directly into the
back of the K2 - the K2 can be damaged.
All that uses a DB-9 connector is NOT a serial port connection, the K2
is clearly labeled AUX I/O.
Use the K2 defined cable to plug into the KUSB and all will be OK (if
your KUSB works OK at the 4800 baud rate.

[Elecraft] K2: connecting a condenser mic

2010-01-29 Thread Brian Machesney
I have a condenser mic that is not on the list of "known" mics in the docs
or on the Elecraft web site. I'm trying to decide whether to simply short
the +5V to the AF when connecting my condenser mic to the KSB2, or to place
a resistor in between. I am more concerned about potential long-term adverse
effects on the mic element by operating it out-of-spec than I am concerned
with damaging the K2.

A DMM shows the DC resistance of the element to be 400 Kohms! Not really
surprising, I guess, since a condenser mic is electrically similar to a
capacitor.

The manufacturer specs the mic element at 4.5Kohms and 1.5V to 9.0V bias.
Applying the KSB2's +5V directly to the mic element's 4.5K ohms should
produce 1mA drain, no sweat for the KSB2, and right in the middle of the
manufacturer's applied DC voltage spec.

The manufacturer's tech sent me a wiring diagram that shows a +12V supply
with a series resistor between 470 and 2.2K ohms to the mic. The 470 ohm
resistor would apply nearly 11V to the mic, if the mic element and the
series act as a pure voltage divider. The 2.2K ohm resistor would produce 8V
at the mic.

The KSB2 schematic shows a 2.2uF electrolytic cap between the MIC AF and the
rest of the KSB2, so I wouldn't think there's any risk of a short.

Help from those in the know, please?

you need to spend that much money on a rig when you can have a Hallicrafters

Re: [Elecraft] K2: connecting a condenser mic

2010-01-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
Brian,

Is that a 3 terminal mic element? If so, then you can follow the
manufacturer's instructions and apply the 5 volts to the voltage
terminal on the element.
OTOH, most of these elements are 2 terminal, and the voltage should be
applied to the AF pin through a resistor - try 5.6k like the Elecraft
MH2 uses as a first trial, it will likely work because the resistance is
not critical.
If you try to connect the 5 volts directly to the AF terminal, you will
effectively bypass all the audio to ground. For AC signals, a power
rail is jst the same as ground because there are large bypass capacitors
on the voltage rail.

Re: [Elecraft] Arctic Silver - anyone using it instead of thermal-pads?

2010-01-29 Thread K2QI
Slightly OT, but when it comes to processors, there's no way I'd use a
thermal pad.

A thin layer of Arctic Silver is a far better heat conductor than any
thermal pad available.

I see no downside to using AS on any FET apart from the potential mess, but
the trick is to use a small amount. A little goes a long way with that
stuff.

Thanks, Don.

Not knowing any better, I simply shorted the AF and MICBIAS when I connected

bypassing on the MICBIAS line is 1uF (rev B, sheet 5 of 7, "Front Panel -

Re: [Elecraft] Yaesu Mics on a K3?

2010-01-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
Dean,

The K3 is permanently wired for the Elecraft mic configuration, so you
must either create an adapter or rewire your microphones for the
Elecraft pinout. If you choose to rewire the microphones, you will have
to change your K2 as well if you wish to use the same mic on both.

After answering many questions about how to set the K2 microphone
configuration header for a wide variety of mics, I for one am glad that
the K3 does not have a configurable mic pinout.

The K3 microphone jack pinout is in the K3 manual.

Re: [Elecraft] K2: connecting a condenser mic

2010-01-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
Brian,

You *could* put the resistor in the mic plug, but I would think it
easier to add the resistor in the K2 to the back of the microphone jack
between pin 1 and pin 6 as is normally done. In the K3, you simply turn
Bias on in the menu.

If you choose to put the resistor in the mic plug, run the K3 without
Bias selected, it will pick up the voltage from pin 6

If it's like most 2-wire mics, you want a series resistor between V+
and the "hot" terminal of the mic. It serves as the load resistor
for the output stage of the mic, and also limits current to that
output stage to a safe value. If I knew nothing about the mic, a
value on the order of 4.7K - 5.6K would be a good starting point.
The mfr is giving you lower values. If you use NO resistor, the V+
shorts out the audio.

[Elecraft] K3 and Centurion

2010-01-29 Thread k6rb
What's the best way to interface a K3 with a Centurion QSK amplifier? I
can run the keying through the Centurion back to the K3 (as Ten Tec
suggests), or key the K3 directly and let the TX DLY remain 008 to delay
the time RF appears relative to asserting the KEY OUT line.

I'm going to try the K3 out on 160 this weekend (during CQWW160) and will
most likely be using the Centurion amp.

You don't have to buy one to try it out. You can adjust the
SHIFT/WIDTH controls to see what it sounds like. Having a narrow
roofing filter pays off in a contest or other heavy operating
conditions to keep something loud in the space between the roofing
bandwidth and DSP bandwidth from pumping the hardware AGC.

Werner,

The K3 has a Remote Power ON input on the ACC connector. See the manual

You might want to add a battery at the output of the power supply

[Elecraft] K3 F Gain mod

2010-01-29 Thread Brian Alsop
The instructions have you clipping one SMT resistor and then removing
the pieces.

I've did a trial of this method on a junk PCB here.

At least on the board I used, there apparently is some kind of adhesive
under under the chip. The clipping process seems to remove the solder
resist and perhaps any PCB traces under the chip.

Is there anything under R8 that can be damaged?

(Guess not, since nobody complaining. A blow up of the pix doesn't seem
to show anything either)

amp" occurs about 8 msec before RF output. The 8 msec is adjustable by a
menu setting. The 8 msec default works fine with my Ten Tec Titan 425 amps
in both QSK and semi-QSK mode.

Yes - both addresses make it to our sales group. Lisa sees all of these.

Note that you may not always get a response the same day due to high
levels of incoming emails. Especially on Mondays, when we have to catch
up on all the weekend emails. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] [K3]K3 switched off after power failure

2010-01-29 Thread oe9fwv

hi Don,

thank you for the hint to the ACC connector. Well, that's easy. I only have
to ground the "power on pin".

And @ Ed: yes the 12V sense mod is installed. (it is not a 12V sense
problem, but a real power shutoff)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 F Gain mod

2010-01-29 Thread Matt Zilmer
The K3 electronics seems to be assembled with a "clean" SMT process,
which means that only solder paste is used to hold the components on
the board during reflow. The boards are designed for rework.

You should not experience the same problem with K3 PCBA's. I've done
most of the approved rework to the K3 and had no trouble like this.

[Elecraft] Yaesu Mic to K3

2010-01-29 Thread J.A. Wolf, MD, K6JW
Another solution to the mic interface problem is the MFJ 1251 Universal
Microphone Adapter. You configure internal jumpers for the specific mic and
radio you're using. You'll have to reconfigure the device for each different
type or style of mic (Yaesu 8 pin round or modular, ICOM 8 pin round or
modular, etc.), but
it will solve the problem. The K3 mic connector is configured in the Kenwood
mode, so you'd follow the directions for Yaesu mic to Kenwood radio. It should
work well. The cost of the device is about $35.
I originally bought one of these things because I wanted to use it to plug
two mics into a Yaesu FT-857D that I use as a backup HF and VHF/UHF radio in
the shack. I quickly found that I really couldn't run the two mics
simultaneously with it, but by combining a couple of Heil adapters with the
unit, I can now run both the modular hand mic and a Heil dual element desk mic
with footswitch through it, one at a time. This is better on the 857D than
reconnecting each time at the radio's connector, since that requires removal of
the control head -- a stupid design decision by Yaesu. Anyway, if you're just
trying to adapt Yaesu mics to the K3, you might consider the MFJ adapter. It
should work just fine.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 F Gain mod

2010-01-29 Thread Dave - AB7E

There are different methods used to solder SMT components to PC boards. The
use of adhesive under the body of the component is an older process typically
used for wave soldering. Reflow soldering is more common now (especially for
single sided boards), where the solder paste is screened onto the board first
and then the component leads are placed into the paste. The sticky paste holds
the component in place until the solder melts, at which point the surface
tension of the solder takes over.

I'm pretty sure the K3 uses the latter technique and wouldn't have any epoxy
holding the resistor to the board.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 F Gain mod

The instructions have you clipping one SMT resistor and then removing
the pieces.

I've did a trial of this method on a junk PCB here.

At least on the board I used, there apparently is some kind of adhesive
under under the chip. The clipping process seems to remove the solder
resist and perhaps any PCB traces under the chip.

Is there anything under R8 that can be damaged?

(Guess not, since nobody complaining. A blow up of the pix doesn't seem
to show anything either)

Thanks Eric.

I had sent one to info on the 21st and a followup to sales on the 27th.
Must still be in the ketchup ;-)
I'll try again.

Re: [Elecraft] Arctic Silver - anyone using it instead of thermal-pads?

2010-01-29 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr WA5ZNU
You probably already know this, but for the archives, there is one
reason: if the active component must be insulated from ground, Bergquist
and other thermal pads will do that, but Arctic Silver, white Silicone,
and Diamond Powder won't do that.

[Elecraft] FS: Elecraft W1 computing wattmeter and SWR bridge

2010-01-29 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Group,

I have already had the LP100A and W2.  This W1 is surplus to my requirement. It
comes with the PC interface cable.  Original price from Elecraft was $104.9 +
shipping.

I would like to sell it at $55 plus $10 for shipping by registered airmail.
The W1 was well built and 100% functional.  I accept payment by paypal.

If interested,  please email me off the list.

Does anyone have one of the Elecraft paddles?

Would you be able to email me with your thoughts on these.

I am getting back into CW and the selection available is a little daunting to

Please reply direct to reduce the bandwidth on the reflector as I don't wish to
