Re: [Elecraft] The no-serial port conundrum
Actually, Jim, your T41 did have a serial port on its mother board. It just wasn't exposed through a chassis connector. If you plug it into its docking station or port extender, you have a DB9 real serial port. Ditto the T61. /Rick On 3/22/10, Jim Brown j...@audiosystemsgroup.com wrote: On Sun, 21 Mar 2010 00:09:43 -0700, Garry Shapiro wrote: Tom, NW6P has a new K3 and a modern laptop with no serial port, About seven years ago, I bought a Quatech DSP-100 PC-card for my IBM T41 Thinkpad that came without a serial port. Re: [Elecraft] K2 external auto tuner and 100 watt amp
Hi Jim Thanks for the info :-) Excellent, that is exactly what I want to put together. for the record, some background to this project... a few weekends ago was the ZL National Field Day which I havn't done anything remotely serious for over 20 years ! A small team was put together, and I took along my K3 and the K2 as a backup receiver. Long story short, the K2 was put into service when it was quickly apparent the other-brand transceivers had front end and/or mixer overload. ( eg in kiwi speak - completely hammered ) K3 ran perfectly, no question. The K2 performed beyond the call of duty, so figure add the amp and tuner for casual contest and home station work. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] ...and then there was silence (well almost)
I would check very carefully for a Coax failure or other short/Open in the signal path. I would then check the antenna with a second rig or receiver , if you have one available Next check the k3 carefully to ensure that you have not inadvertently selected the wrong antenna port, RX antenna input input etc. If you have the transverter interface check to see if you can hear ok on the RX antenna input, this would help rule out the ATU Your wattmeter will not give meaningful power measurement results without a dummy load, even then the results will be a bit of a 'ballpark figure' Until you resolve other issues carry out your tests at a low power level (20W or less than 2W might be good choices) Also both the Low pass filter and the Surge arrestor expect to operate in a (near) 50Ohm environment but presumably the system is relatively close to this when functioning correctly ? Re: [Elecraft] K2 external auto tuner and 100 watt amp
Paul, The KAT100 is designed to be installed in the EC2 enclosure. It has the plugs to connect to the KPA100 internal cables (except for the speaker). The external cabling is also provided with the KPA100 and KAT100 kits, just make up the cable shown in the KAT100 manual. Your base K2 will need the KIO2 to provide the path for the required signals. There are alternatives to the KIO2 that can be homebrewed, but they do not provide a connection for the computer. The computer connection capability in the KPA100 is not used if it is mounted external to the base K2. 73, Don W3FPR paulb wrote: Hello folks Need a bit of input hereI have a K2 with auto tuner fitted. [Elecraft] [OT] dual-voltage electronics (charger units)
An off-topic question. Most electronics these days have dual-voltage chargers. For example, my iPhone, my BN Nook, and my laptop are all dual voltage. Thus, when in a 220 volt AC location, all you need to do is plug the unit in using an adapter common to that location (I was in Paris last week making use of these dual-voltage characteristics so this prompted the question). So, what is the technology of these dual-voltage chargers? I am asking because they are getting pretty small. The unit for my iPhone is just a little plastic wrapped container about 1 inch square. My Nook charger is even smaller in that it is only about 5/8 inch thick by 1 1/4 inch long. Both of these units are USP interfaces so I figure 5 volts charging and I know the Nook charger delivers a little more then the 500 mA maximum of a typical USB. Are these transformer plus rectifier and voltage regulator or are they some kind of switcher, or maybe just a rectifier diode and voltage regulator. They do heat up so there is something there absorbing a bit of energy. Maybe I need to cut one open but I am not wanting to do that if I can get the answer here. Yaesu had the FT-5k on display at the Charlotte fest. I got a close up look. The three almost identical knobs for VFO B frequency, and multi-function shift/width/notch for the main and sub receivers are very confusing. Labels on the other controls are very hard to read under reduced lighting conditions. The FT-5000 perpetuates the FT-2000 ergonomic error of placing the sub RX gain controls to the left of the main RX gain controls when Sub Rx frequency control (VFO B) is to the right of the main VFO ... and compounds the error by returning the RX B shift/width/notch control to the right! Re: [Elecraft] [OT] FT-5000 vs. K3
Hi Steve, I own a fully loaded K3 with a LP-PAN/PSDR panadapter. I agree, the LP-PAN/PSDR combo make existing panadapters on most rigs a joke. 192 KHz bandwidth, sensitivity down to -140 dbm and frequency resolution down to 10 Hz all in real time, at a screen refresh rate of up to 50 fps. Add serial port through LP_Bridge and you have point-n-click rig control for ultimate search and pounce operation. I also purchased the FTdx5000MP. It came with the matching SM-5000 Station Monitor. After using the K3/LP-PAN/PSDR combo and comparing it to the scope display on the SM-5000 I too must admit that the SM-5000 is very disappointing. There are a few restricted bandwidth modes that improve the displayed sweep speed at the sacrifice of displayed bandwidth but the overall performance is poor at best. So in the words of Tim Allen (1990's Tool Time TV Show) I rewired it! With the help of Larry (N8LP) I ordered a LP-PAN unit with a Xtal that supports the FT5000 9 MHz IF output. Larry delivered the assembled unit to me within a week. My FT5000 with LP-PAN/PSDR works FB (same functionality as with my K3/PSDR combo). The panadapter on my FT5000 is no longer a joke or disappointment. Since I was the first to get LP-PAN/PSDR working on the FT5000, Larry asked if I would send him a photo of the station to post on his web site. http://www.telepostinc.com/LP-PAN.html I also uploaded a PDF file to Larry's site that shows photos of the SM-5000 display compared to the LP-PAN/PSDR tuned to the same frequency and both set to 100 KHz bandwidth. The link is located right below the photo of my station at the link above. I love my K3 and now that I have LP-PAN/PSDR on the FT5000, I'm acquiring the same affection for it too. The scope has so much impact on my operating performance that I'll never again purchase any rig that isn't provisioned for one. I need my Radio Eyes. Re: [Elecraft] (K3) Mode change with band unpredictible
Brendan, That might be the issue here. The Kenwood selection in my logging software worked perfectly with my K2 and the FT1000MP. [Elecraft] New K144XV/KXV3A - problems on 2M - 1 milliwatt calibration ERR TXG and 'Unexpected response DB 0.56 MW; to DB; State 153'
Seeking advice while trying to get KXV3A/K144XV added to existing K3-10. May be operator error. Detail below. Rig's history: K3 SN 18xx, no options (single 2.7 kHz 5-pole filter), built from kit when first received (Fall 2008), used successfully for a little while, then stored until today (March 2010) (=I have very little operating time with the rig.) Received KXV3A and K144XV kit recently which was installed today and having difficulty verifying operation on 2M band. Main symptom - no receive signals heard on 2M band (can hear normal background noise, preamp changes receive noise level, but can't hear signal from HT in shack.) HF tx/rx still seems normal. When in data mode, and with XV1 PWR set instead to H 5.0 (for example) I see transmit output power on ANT1 connector in 144 MHz band (unfortunately I didn't check on another receiver or freq counter so I can only say I saw power into dummy load with that test.) I completed install of KXV3A and K144XV in a single operation, then updated firmware for first time since radio was new (3.79 for K3, 1.00 for K144XV). Used config menu to set KXV3A to nor and K144XV to these: XV1 ON:YES; XV1 RF: 144; XV1 IF: 28; XV1 PWR: L 1.50. Two brief flashes seen on K144XV module at power-up. Preamp increases rx noise level on 144 MHz band. Only FL2 installed (2.7 kHz), configured in all modes OK Other unexpected results: No click between 144-145 and 146-147 band segments. No flash LED between 144-145 and 146-147 band segments. Cannot independently set offset frequencies (XV1 OFS unchaged 144-146 vs 146-148 MHz segment - if I change it while 146 MHz, then tune 146 MHz, the configuration parameter remains as I set for 146 MHz segment.) Re: [Elecraft] [OT] dual-voltage electronics (charger units)
Dual-voltage is really an analog/transformer based concept. When one can get a smart switching power supply the size of a dime that time slices the incoming voltage with just enough varying width to keep a capacitor charged to a given voltage, the only real concern is making sure the components are able to withstand 700-800 volts peak to peak (2.8 times whatever) on the input side and and able to do the current on the output side. The more voltage on the input, the narrower the conduction slice. Since the gate is either on or off, it doesn't have partial conduction resistive loss, and doesn't have that heat load. Doing high voltage to low voltage is really miniature these days depending on the current draw. I'd take it apart anyway : ) 73, Guy On Tue, Mar 23, 2010 at 10:33 AM, Phil Hystad phys...@mac.com wrote: An off-topic question. Most electronics these days have dual-voltage chargers. They also provide additional audio I/O. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I hate to be a party-pooper but comparisons like this really don't tell much of anything (and YouTube is filled with them). Recording a single signal acoustically from a pair of speakers several feet away in an echoey room is the worst way to try to listen critically and try to absorb the sound of a rig. Aside from some slight tonal differences the two receivers sound pretty much the same to me-- and in real life they probably do sound very similar. Did we really expect a significant difference? This is true. I've heard a few where people take direct recordings and then we're actually talking. I usually watch the videos and then when I hear this audio was directly recorded... Then I reach over and grab a pair of headphones. Beyond that my laptop speakers will do justice to the level of quality that is there... ;) ~Brett On Tue, 2010-03-23 at 17:55 -0700, Al Lorona wrote: I hate to be a party-pooper but comparisons like this really don't tell much of anything (and YouTube is filled with them). [Elecraft] Adding options later for the K3
I am looking to get a K3 kit. Just the basic 10watt kit, the ATU and maybe a Filter. I would assume that the hardest part, would be the original build. Is it? As time and cash becomes available, I will add to it. Is it all easy to add later, or is there some option, because of complexity, that I should install at the beginning? It will be replacing a Kenwood TS-570, so don't need to start with a lot of options to see a big difference. I'm planing on using a Heil Goldline microphone, that I was using with the TS-570. [Elecraft] KPA100 speaker connector / iPod keyer
I've been meaning for a while to use some sort of plug on the KPA100 speaker wire. I'd like to simply unplug it when necessary rather than unsolder. Can anyone recommend a small connector/plug, possibly even a Mouser or manufacturer part no.? I was thinking it might even be worth doing so that on my K1 I can plug/unplug the internal battery holder as desired. As an aside, I'm asking because I'm loading up on some more parts from Mouser or Digikey. My 13 year old son, Jonathan kb3rli, is a cw op but is also an avid iPod Touch user. He put iDitDahText on it so that he can web surf, text, email, all with cw input via an iambic keyer on the iPod screen. He wanted to pipe it into the rig's mic input to send modulated cw on SSB. Instead, I used it as a chance to teach him some electronics. We made a little 3-block diagram: amp, comparator, switch, and then I showed him how to use, respectively, an op amp, op amp, and npn transistor for each. So now the ipod keys the rig (no modulated cw) and he wants to solder it up and stuff it in, of course, an Altoids tin. He still likes a real key best, but it's a fun project he loved using the oscilloscope. He was all smiles during qsos when he said KEY IS IPOD. :-) Funny thing is that no one even asked more about it. Anyway, any inline speaker connector recommendations for the K2 are very welcome. Re: [Elecraft] Adding options later for the K3
Welcome to the list. Pleasure to have you here. There really isn't anything that is too difficult to install after the fact. I'd say that the hardest stuff to get into is the back panel area. So if you feel the need for the KXV3A then you could get that out of the box but honestly its not that big of a deal to add later. The KXV3A allows for transverters to be connected, allows for an IF output for panadapters, allows for a separate RX antenna input. and allows you to use the RX output to pass things onto another radio for A/B testing and many other things. Anyway feel free to ask questions here. Do search the archives online and do Goole searches for questions you have as you can find the answers immediately that way often. If you're really in a rush (like while you're building the radio) come in here and you'll find many of us will jump at the opportunity to help make sure you succeed! Again welcome to the Elecraft community. This is what makes Elecraft Elecraft! ~Brett On Tue, 2010-03-23 at 19:23 -0700, Michael Germino wrote: I am looking to get a K3 kit. [Elecraft] So the K3 Won't Do Spark Gap?
Somewhat related ... Some years ago I visited the Marconi site at Glace Bay. The site that the Canadians tout as the Marconi site was only the receiving station's location. The 600 acre transmitter site is a few miles away on a dirt road and is virtually unknown. It took me two days to track it down. There's the proverbial long story involved, but I came away with a huge (+/- 3') antenna insulator from the original station and some scraps of wood to make certificate frames with. The insulator hangs in my shack, and it was given to me by the caretaker of the site, who is the grandson of Marconi's foreman. It's a tragedy that the site isn't protected by Parks Canada. There are political reasons why, but it's still tragic. Marconi's car and home is there and the house is furnished with the Marconi family furniture, including his wife's piano and his mandolin. There's even an attic full of his personally made radio junk. So sad ... enough to make a fella cry. I've been to radio's Mecca! (:-)) 73! Re: [Elecraft] Adding options later for the K3
Mike, I have just finished my K3 kit, and learning how to use it, but I think the options are very easy to put in at any time. They are well thought out, and instructions are VERY clear whether all are added at the initial build, or if they are added later. One question I would ask is have you been runing the 570 at 10w or less?? I think if you are used to the 100w output, you might want to seriously consider the 100w amp as you build the kit. I too started to build the 10w version, as I have a very low drive Alpha amplifier, but find I would have been disappointed had I not put in the 100w amp in the initial build. I find myself satisfied with the barefoot rig in a lot of my operations. However, I did not buy the ATU, since I am restricted to my 160m wire, fed with ladder line and tuned with an external tuner until I get my quad back up. Ice storms are not a quad's best friend, hi. That helped me keep the cost down. I did add the KBPF3 as I enjoy SWLing (I am listening to the Voice of Vietnam as I type this, hi). I find the receiver to be OUTSTANDING, and the AM Sync mode to be very good for shortwave listening. You WILL enjoy the build. Inventory before you start, take frequent breaks, and read the manual that you can download before the kit arrives if you can, Mike. It pays dividends in the end. 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
