Re: [Elecraft] P3

2010-08-03 Thread Brett Howard
Bout an hour and a half or so including time that it took to take it
out of the box... Not to mention the fact that I was one the phone
while assembling it. However my time was kept low and I was able to
built it with divided attention because I'd already read the manual.
There are very few possible screws to have to separate things from and
thus the thing just poof goes together in a heartbeat. The only real
secret is that you need to kinda put things together slightly loosely
and make sure you get it all square and sealed up tight before you
tighten things down.

[Elecraft] Another slick note about the P3...

2010-08-03 Thread Brett Howard
Man I must admit I really dig the ability to move the CF... On
numerous occasions I'd be listening to a QSO and I'd want to look over
and check another portion of the band However in PowerSDR I
wasn't able to do this without leaving my current frequency. This was
an even bigger problem in that my sound card was only a 96Khz version.
However I really dig that with the P3 I can move the center frequency
over and look at the CW portion of the band even if I'm up at the top
end of that band.

Very cool!

~Brett (N7MG)

PS: another thing that I really like about the P3 is that the
resolution of the data displayed remains the same no matter what I
have my span set to. In powerSDR with the LP-PAN you've got a fixed
sample rate and thus your data points are greatly spread out when
using narrow spans. Not so with the P3.

An example correction to the P3 Owner's Manual is to the botched last

K3 (and it's user!) but I am not sure.
Prior to setting up my K3, I had been using an IC-7700, keying with COM1 and
interfacing with COM3, so I know those ports were working. I have a home
brew keying circuit that works with various other programs, so I have no
need to key the K3 through its serial port.
What I have done is moved my keying circuit (it works fine with the K3) to
the K3 and moved my COM3 serial cable to the K3. In Logger Config, I changed
from the IC-7700 to K3, I used the recommended configuration for the K3,
i.e., 19600/N/8/1 and I have DTR and RTS set to 'Always OFF'. The CW/PTT
Port Adr is set for 3E8.
I have tried numerous other settings, N1MM recognizes it is connected to a
K3, but I get no frequency readout.
Sure would appreciate some constructive suggestions or some working

[Elecraft] Transformer

2010-08-03 Thread David Robertson
Vic,

If your transformer is a true 1 to 1 winding ratio the RMS voltage measurment
of both the primary and secondary should be the same. In your case either the
turns ratio are not 1 to 1 or you have a shorted turn in the primary winding.
If it a shorted turn then even though the actual turns ratio is 1 to 1, if
there is a shorted turn in the primary, the electrical turns ratio will not be
the same. If you connect the transformer with the secondary as the primary,
your output voltage RMS will be lower.

[Elecraft] P3 shipping

2010-08-03 Thread Jay
My P3 is on the way here and should arrive tomorrow (yippi)

But I just received an e-mail from Elecraft that they had left out the
cables in their

haste to get the shipment out on time. The cables were shipped today with
an apology.

What a company fix the problem before the complaint is made . HooRay

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and N1MM Logger

2010-08-03 Thread Tommy Alderman
No Mike, the only problem I'm having is with the frequency and mode
information into N1MM. It was working just fine right after I reset the
RS242 to the correct (19200 b) baud rate; then I updated to the beta 4.03
firmware and now it does not talk to N1MM again.

Right after updating to the beta firmware, I tested the CW QRQ and found it
to really be excellent. I went from 50 wpm up to 100 wpm in 10 wpm
increments and the keying is just excellent. The characters are perfectly
formed up to 100 wpm, but around 95 or so wpm, something like an AGC hang
occurred. But they have done a really good job with this.

Now if I can just solve the K3/N1MM communications problem I'll be all
set..hihi.

Do you have the K3 baud rate set to match? CONFIG:RS232? I have N/8/2 for
the other

Can you connect to the K3 using the K3 utility?

I'm a bit confused if you're having trouble with keying also, or just with
the

[Elecraft] P3 in SO2R

2010-08-03 Thread K5WA
I'm hoping someone here has a quick answer before I start digging into the

Does the P3 have the capability to connect to two K3s and display the
received IF of the opposite rig when one rig is transmitting?

I'm just dreaming up a justification to buy one and my only purpose would be
to easily monitor a second band for openings during a contest.

[Elecraft] K3 Firmware bug w/K144XV

2010-08-03 Thread Bruce Beford
K3 s/n running v4.03 f/w
KRX3 installed
K144XV installed

Have entered a local repeater freq/offset/pl tone into VFO A
Output/K3 RX: 147.285, positive offset (147.885 Tx) pl 103.5

Have another local repeater output freq on VFO B: 146.760

Can hear both repeaters fine.

Once I TX on VFO to use the first repeater (Txing on 147.885), the Sub RX
readout changes to 147.760. (The MHz digits go to the same as VFO A.)
However, if I use an HT to open the second repeater (146.760 output), The K3
can still hear it, even though the display says 1 MHz higher. So, it looks
like a display shift, rather than actual operating frequency. This behavior
is the same whether VFO IND is Yes or No.

I understand that the K144XV uses different LO crystals for 144-146 vs.
146-148, and simultaneous monitoring of 2 freqs in separate segments would
not be allowed. However, these two repeaters are both in the upper segment,
and the firmware should allow this.

Can anyone else replicate this behavior?

An interesting separately purchasable option for a P3 would be a board
that communicated to the second K3 or other rig (a second IF IN and
RS232) and had various ways of watching either/both, e.g. upper half
screen on rig 1, lower half on rig 2.

2010-08-03 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Sorry, no. I'd suggest you connect the P3 to the SP rig.

I'm finding uses beyond those I expected. It's great for SP and to find a
relatively clear space to start running.

The waterfall display makes all the difference in the world. You can see the
CW dots and dashes and some indication of relative signal strength. Makes
it much easier to find holes between stations (for CQing) or weak traces for
stations that you might otherwise tune by in SP. Funny how that works, the
weak stations are sometimes tasty multipliers...

[Elecraft] IF display while xmitting

I use an SDR here connected to the K3 IF.

SKIMMER or ROCKY run off this SDR.

When I transmit the my displayed xmit signal appears 800 Hz above the
station I'm zero beat with. This is regardless if normal or REV CW is used.

My pitch is set to 500 Hz. The station being received is producing this
pitch.

I don't understand this at all.

The IF frequency in the SDR's must be set right. Clicking on a spot
puts me right on that stations frequency.

Thanks Jim, but that is NOT the problem. I have had both the serial port and
K3's RS232 set to both 19200 b and also 38400 b and get the same results.

I initially had the problem because my serial port was set to 19200 b and my
K3's RS232 was set for the default of 4800 b. After I changed RS232 to 19200
b, the K3 and N1MM communicated excellent. AFTER updating the K3 firmware to
4.03, again, the K3 and N1MM would not communicate.

I am in the process of reverting the K3 firmware back to 3.xx.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and N1MM Logger

2010-08-03 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
First of all, if you can talk to your K3 via your PC using the
utility, the problem is NOT in the K3. Are you using the same
computer to run the K3 utility as you are when running N1MM with the
K3?

Is there anything else on the RS232 line besides the PC and MM. If
so, disconnect it.

Is there any other program that looks at the same com port. If so
shut it down. Does that program have a boot-up driver that runs all
the time, then stop it. Try again.

I'd guess half of K3 owners are on 4.03, and it has been out for quite
a while. If there was an endemic RS232 problem it would have been
howled out of existence a while ago.

I note that you are setting memory locations. I think that is a real
risk with Win 7 (I have Win 7 pro, using 4.03, a REAL serial port on a
PCI-X serial card using one of three extra video slots that will never
be used otherwise, and I let the OS configure memory locations and
IRQ's (I don't understand your comment about Win 7 not supporting

I initially had the problem because my serial port was set to 19200 b and my
 K3's RS232 was set for the default of 4800 b. After I changed RS232 to 19200
b, the K3 and N1MM communicated excellent. AFTER updating the K3 firmware to
4.03, again, the K3 and N1MM would not communicate.

I am in the process of reverting the K3 firmware back to 3.xx.

That's the problem. You must set BOTH the K3 and N1MM to the SAME baud rate.

Changing it is what made it spit up. Like Guy, I use 38,400. Slower speeds

[Elecraft] K3 communcation issue solved!

2010-08-03 Thread Tommy Alderman
Thank you to those who have been trying to help me to get my new K3 to talk
with N1MM. That issue is now solved.
It wasn't until I thought I had checked and rechecked all configurations,
both in N1MM and in the K3, that I finally became convinced it was not a
software/firmware issue. In checking my serial cables, I found the DB-9
connector to the K3 had slipped partially out of the K3 connector. I simply
reseated that connector (AND used a screw driver to fasten it to the K3 and
the K3 immediately started communicating with N1MM again.
I do appreciate everyone offering me very well thought out suggestions to
solve this problem.

2010-08-03 Thread Dick Dievendorff
There is a newer K3 Utility version available in the ftp.elecraft.com\P3
folder that is being tested by our P3 Field Test team.

I've asked to have it published to our Elecraft K3 software web page, but
the last few days have been very hectic in Watsonville; they're busy getting
the backlog of P3s out the door.

The new beta K3 firmware was packaged with an updated
K3UtilityVersionInfo.txt file that causes the message about a newer K3
Utility version being available. Sometimes we have to guess what order
things will go out, and this time I guessed wrong.

Your current K3 Utility will do what it's supposed to do with the new
firmware. Or you can install a newer one from the ftp site.

Hi,

The FTP site is a little confusing. I can't find the usual zip file for
4.05. I find a zip for 4.03 and it looks like if I download that and replace
hmcu403.hex with hmcu405.hex and the release notes file, I should be all
set? All the other files are unchanged from 4.03? It's much easier if each
new release has a complete zip file. I also found and downloaded the install
for utility 1.3.7.26.

4.05 has been designated a regular production release. You do not use the
FTP method for regular production releases, only for beta releases. Just
start K3UTIL, and check the box that says Copy new files from Elecraft into
local folder. Then click the button that says Check Versions Now. It
should recognize the new firmware and download it. You can then load it into
your K3.

watts under the 12W setting. The power didn't vary at all with the
power control, except when the PA clicked in or out. Very little
current being drawn. Power out is normal on all other bands. I did
a quick check of the archives and didn't see anything, but I might

Re: [Elecraft] P3 future features

2010-08-03 Thread Alan Bloom
Hi Tom,

I definitely want to add a readout on the P3 for the K3 text decoder.
As soon as I have time (pant, pant!).

I think a plus sign tuning indicator would be way cool, especially if
I can make it look slightly sloppy to imitate the CRT analog tuning
indicators on TTY demods of old.

Simple, but would begin to wean the radio from the computer

I like the idea of being able to operate RTTY or PSK with the K3/P3 from
the field without a computer. I find that sending RTTY with the key
paddle works fine, but the 7-character display on the K3 is a
limitation. Text readout on the P3 would fix that problem.

A keyboard option would be great too. You can get a miniature USB
keyboard without the numeric keypad etc. that doesn't take up too much
space.

Too many cool features, too little time...

Alan

My K3 is so old (serial no. 7) that it came with an old version of the

Alan,

I'll have one the minute you release the keyboard and text decode features
for PSK31 and RTTY..on the P3...(:-))

Now stop reading these postings and get back to work..Grin

 AHHH Vic,

You shouldn't have. Now there will be a real mountain of KX1, K1, K2,
K3 and P3s out there with falsified serial numbers, and we can't tell the
difference. I guess we still need to engrave our call onto each and every
board in the assembly :-) .

This should move to a new thread labeled K? identity theft - there are
probably insurance companies that will provide tracking of that for a fee.
Starting my own business -- I will track your Elecraft serial numbers for
$10 per month and provide you with an annual report of any discovered
attempts to duplicate your serial number :-) .

[Elecraft] K3 assembly, resistance checks

2010-08-03 Thread Mike Markowski
Hi all,

In the K3 Assembly Manual Rev L, I reached the point of doing resistance
checks on pages 44 and 45. Of the 4 checks all are fine except for U12.
Instead of getting a resistance reading on my digital meter, it never
settles down. It cycles through a range of values up through the Mohm
range.

Does this sound like a meter issue or a problem?

Thanks for any advice,
Mike ab3ap

Readings:

Across 12 VDC IN: infinite (should be 3 kohms)
R36/gnd: 240 ohms ( 150 ohms)
U13/gnd: 424 ohms ( 150 ohms)

U12/+5V leg: cycles through readings
U12/+12V leg: 240 ohms

[Elecraft] K3DVR vs CW Memories

2010-08-03 Thread Stan Gibbs

I've read the manuals and searched the archives, but I'm still unclear what
benefits, if any, the KDVR3 provides over the built-in CW memories for CW
mode.

I'm also unclear how the two interrelate; does the KDVR3 override or replace
the CW memories when it is installed, or does it function only in SSB mode?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 assembly, resistance checks

2010-08-03 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Sounds like a meter issue Mike. All you're looking for there is a short
circuit or not. The values given are those that should be the least on
normally sees due to normal currents through the circuits, but there are a
lot of solid state junctions in the transistors and i.c.s. It sounds like
your meter is supplying enough voltage to start to turn some junctions on
so they draw more current resulting in a lower resistance, then your meter
switches ranges to one with less voltage and they again turn off and so
on.

Try using a manually-selected fixed range and see how it acts.
