Re: [Elecraft] K2 UPGRADE
Hello Danno: You will need a 20A 13.8 VDC power supply. Of course that's peak (key down) current. If you live in an RV you may have one handy (the battery). The 100 watt option was designed to be removed quickly and easily if you want to restore full QRP capabilities of the K2, including the optional QRP antenna tuner and battery. The ATU and battery for the QRP K2 fit into the top cover. The 100 watt amp simply replaces the top cover. A few screws and you have either the QRP K2 or K2/100 by swapping top covers. I have not done so, but have seen posts here of many people who drove QRO amps with their K2/100's. Nice tag line. My favorite is "Luck comes most often to those who are best prepared for it." Re: [Elecraft] K2 UPGRADE
Danno, First, your ALL CAPS post makes reading difficult, so pardon me if I missed something. Your K2 is definitely up to date with all the official Elecraft mods. If you add the KPA100, it is not difficult to switch to the QRP cover - 6 screws and 4 internal cables to unplug, one or two to plug when going from QRO to QRP. OTOH, if you desire something quicker and easier to change (2 cables, no screws), consider mounting the KPA100 in its own EC2 enclosure. That does require the KIO2 (or a suitable substitute) mounted in the K2/10 to carry the control signals to the KPA100. If you are considering the KAT100 as well, then the KAT100-2 has all the "hooks" to plug the KPA100 into its board (the KAT100-1 is complete with its "half high" enclosure, you must purchase the EC2 enclosure separately with the KPA100-2. Yes, you will need a power supply adequate for the 100 watt power level - 17 Amps or greater will do just fine. Yes, there are many who use the KPA100 to drive a higher power amplifier. The only "condition" is that the amp keying voltage must be positive. If it is negative (Heath SB-200, 202, and several other older amplifiers), you will need an external relay or other means of keying the amplifier. If you need someone to do the build for you, take a look at the list of 'Builders for Hire' on the Elecraft website. Contact your chosen builder for prices and what their services include - we are each individuals with our own style. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/25/2010 9:22 PM, Dan Mees wrote: > IM THINKING OF ADDING THE 100W AMP TO MY K2 SR# 6324... [Elecraft] [K3] Modification day for SN 01195
I've been storing up a list of modifications I wanted to install in my K3 (S/N 01195, July 2008) and managed finally to do them today. Due to the number (nine) and varying descriptions, purposes and locations in the rig, I tried to organize my thinking by putting them in a list, trying to see which ones I really need or want, how hard they might be to install, and which ones might be best done together due to being on the same board, etc. Some are documented in Elecraft's modification kits & parts area and some in the application notes area. I started by putting all of the PDFs into a directory of "official K3 modifications" so I could study them. The ones applicable to my K3's vintage were - K3AFMDKT --- Improve speaker & line out distortion and IMD K3DSPLPF --- Active audio LPF to reduce artifacts in the audio chain, add daughter board to DSP board K3IOBUFFKT -- Increase signal level at I.F. output by more than 10 dB AFOPMDKT -- Protect audio amp from short circuit or low impedance loads App Note -- Extreme signal RX protection mod App Note -- Protect against RF pickup at microphone connection by bypassing RF choke App Note -- Protect against chirp from synthesizer by increasing DDS signal driving the PLL App Note -- Improve immunity of RS232 and audio connections to RF by bypassing RF chokes App Note -- K3 SYN ALC mod. Assure enough drive when in high temperature environment Descriptions are my paraphrase and might not be totally accurate. Anyway, I did all of these today and made notes on the degree of difficulty and which ones might best work at the same time here - http://pages.suddenlink.net/wa5bdu/k3_mods.pdf If you have a similar vintage K3 and haven't kept up on mods, they might be of interest. None of them were really difficult for me, and the instructions were complete and accurate. I should say, I assembled my K3 from a kit, I do a lot of homebrewing but it's pretty ugly, and my vision wouldn't allow SMT work with just my bifocals, but with a 10x jeweler's loupe jammed into my good eye I do OK. I did all the mods today and didn't put anything back together until I'd finished them all. Doing it this way, it's important to bag or otherwise segregate all of the screws or other hardware from each cover or component removed and keep each piece in a separate place with its own hardware. I was most interested in the lowpass filter. I'm no golden ear, but possibly the power of suggestion made me think I heard some of the harshness others described. I found myself cranking the bandpass way down toward the low end. At least preliminarily, I think I do notice the improvement in the quality of the sound (I work CW) with the LPF installed. I'm pleased with Elecraft's way of publishing instructions and making mod kits available. Not to diss any other manufacturers, but most have a "no user serviceable parts inside" approach. 73- Nick, WA5BDU __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] BL2 choking Impedence measurements?
Jim, Please allow me to add some facts about the AIM4170C to this discussion. First, the AIM4170C is not designed only for "measuring impedances relatively close to 50 ohms". >From WX0B: The AIM4170C can measure 50K ohms R and +/- 50K ohms X easily. The fact is is that the higher the impedance, as you know from your work with the Type 31 cores, even 1pf or .5pf of stray capacitance can drastically affect the measurement. So the test fixture must be carefully built and calibrated to get a precise measurement. The AIM4170C or even an HP 8753 would have trouble with a choking reactance measurement in a 5K+ environment. Re: [Elecraft] BL2 choking Impedence measurements?
Hello Jim, I have the AIM 4170 antenna analyzer ( w5big.com ). I could sweep the balun in 1:1 and 4:1 mode is you'd like. I'm not sure it will give you the choking impedance but will do some checking with the designer of the AIM. Let me know if that is of interest. You can see what some AIM sweeps look like at http://antennagraphs.com - SN #4335 with 13, 2.8 and 400 8-pole filters and 10 watts. TCXO KBPF3 general coverage option. Plus the wonderful T1 tuner and two BL2 baluns. Re: [Elecraft] P3 and Norton 360
Thanks, David. I haven't had all that much experience with this particular Norton product, but some years ago I did get one machine that had a free trial period for some sort of Norton security tool, so I gave it a trial. I was unhappy with the performance of the new machine. Performance improved markedly once I changed AV vendors. I was a real fan of AVG, but these days I use Microsoft Security Essentials. However it's inappropriate for me as the author of the suspect product to suggest that the AV tool is at fault. We're in the amateur radio business, not the AV consulting business. Any issue like this that makes it harder to use our products must be taken seriously. It would be wrong for me to suggest to John that he trust my software more than his AV tool. Symantec is a prominent player in the AV business. Norton 360 has done well in magazine reviews, it's a CNet Editors Choice award winner (although the user reviews aren't as kind). We had a "false positive" malware alert with the K3 Utility some years back. Thankfully one of our UK customers (a frequent forum contributor) publishes a data security / data recovery web site and was quite helpful in testing the K3 Utility with a number of malware scanners. There are a couple of web sites that offer this very valuable service. I don't know why the "false positives" occur, but generally after a while and a few virus pattern updates these issues dwindle away. But I'm not in control of this. I don't know how to change my code to satisfy any particular AV vendor's scan, nor should they tell me if I were to ask... The K3 Utilities all contain FTP clients (using the common Microsoft-supplied WinINET DLL) that is used to copy firmware files from Elecraft's FTP site to your computer. It is easy to guess that some malware might use similar WinINET functions to do its dastardly deed, so perhaps the list of DLL imports (the names of the Windows functions I use) is a part of the "signature" that is "close enough" to some malware to trigger this alert. Some computer security tools raise an alarm when an application first opens a connection to an external site. The Elecraft utilities are among the programs that need that capability in order to do the firmware copy part of their function. However there are ways to do the FTP work yourself if you choose not to allow the Elecraft code to do it for you. Re: [Elecraft] P3 and Norton 360
I certainly agree with Dave. I don't much care for Norton anti-virus. However, that said, its is possible to simply add an exception so that Norton 360 stops complaining about the program. There are actually quite a few free anti-virus programs including a very nice package from Microsoft. Many of these free programs have very good reputations. My favorite is AVG. I also use Microsoft Security Essentials which is about the simplest to use of any of them. Norton was once the top dog. In fact, from a pure security standpoint, it still is. But it has become extremely bloated after 2+ decades of "enhancements". Re: [Elecraft] [P3] and HRD
I notice, as others have comented a couple of second delay until HRD catches up with things like frequency displayed, etc. Not really a problem for me. But what is a bit annoying if working digital modes (such as PSK), pressing send on HRD, there can be several second delay before the K3 responds. Sometimes I need to press the send button 2X. In casual ragchewing I don't find it more than a minor problem, but am wondering how it will be in contesting when things are hot and heavy. I have not tried Winlink Pactor 3 yet, and this delay may be big problem as the turn around time is very fast. If I simply turn off the P3 will the delay go away? BTW, I am really loving this panadaptor when looking for DX. I've noticed that it's possible to pick out 2 SSB siganls nearly on top of each other. Re: [Elecraft] Re CW Skimmer with Windows 7
I had the same problem few days back when I tried installing it on a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit). I think the problem was not with CW Skimmer but with OmniRig instead which comes bundled with Skimmer. At the end of installation it failed to access two registry keys due to its permissions being too restrictive. You could use Sysinternal's Process monitor and filter by the name of the installer utility and "ACCESS DENIED" while running the install of the OmniRig and it will find two registry keys in question. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx 73, Nick ve3ey On 8/25/2010 12:29 AM, Jim Campbell wrote: >I tried installing CW Skimmer on a Win 7 Professional (64-bit) laptop > but was unsuccessful. Re: [Elecraft] Externmal ATU
"Phil, I am not certain if you or someone else originally asked the question - but -- The K3 can provide a lower power RF source for tuning. As others have mentioned - first set the Tune power in the menu. Then use TUNE (not ATU TUNE) and the K3 will transmit at the power you set in the menu." Don - Yes, I have my TUNE power set for 15 watts (this gives excellant accuracy with the MFJ-998, and is running the K3 PA at pretty much minimum power during the tune process). I was commenting on your comment to use the keying input to tune the radio with a straght key. I currently hit TUNE on the K3 to start the MFJ-998 tuning process (MFJ-998 is set for full auto and begins tuning when SWR > 2:1). And while the MFJ-998 disables the amp-key line during tuning, unless I remember to turn the amp to standby first, there are a few milliseconds when the amp may be looking at a high SWR before the MFJ-998 "realizes" the SWR is high, interrupts the amp-key line, and tunes. My ALS-600 has about 10dB of gain, so with a 15 watt TUNE drive level I get around 150 watts out. However, a K3 remote input request for TUNE would eliminate this problem. When you press the TUNE button on the MFJ-998 it first interrupts the amp-key line, sends a TUNE request to your transceiver (not currently implemented in the K3, but is in many other transceivers), tunes, disables the TUNE request, and then re-enables the amp-key line. Normally my ALS-600 doesn't trip out if I forget to switch it to standby before pressing TUNE on the K3, but occasionally it does. If the K3 took in a remote TUNE request, then I would not have to remember to manually take the ALS-600 off-line.
