This adds some features to enhance the new fixed-tune mode, improvements in transverter operation, more-accurate VFO cursor displays, and several bug fixes. One of the bugs was that upgrading between certain versions of firmware would cause certain parameters to be stored incorrectly in EEPROM. If, for example, you have seen strange operation on transverter bands after a firmware upgrade, try doing a parameter initialization (as described in the Troubleshooting section of the manual) to reset the parameters. Fred, It is a beta version so you will need to download from the P3 beta ftp site ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/P3/firmware/beta/ Then browse in the P3 utility to where you downloaded the zip file (p3m0105.zip). Roy, It may be easier to compare the parts values with those listed in the KSB2 parts list. The schematic is also helpful when doing parts value checks. [Elecraft] low power output after air travel - resolved
Thanks for each suggestion, I followed them all, and my K3 now has full output. Tried cleaning and re-seating contacts, and following 12V sources. Also straightened some bent pins, and recrimped some connections. Not sure what was the problem, but may have been the circuit breaker. the switch in the CB seems a little loose and I don't feel a click when I push it. Perhaps it is faulty, or perhaps I needed to push it harder and longer. It could have been many things or a combination of things, but my best guess is the CB or the connectors on the power cord were not making secure connection. However in that case I think there would be no power to the radio. Re: [Elecraft] P3, what lies ahead?
There was a comment by Wayne on a recent similar thread which intimated that some level of P3 integration with the station PC is being developed, or at least that is what I read into the comment. I expect to purchase a P3 at some point, but am inclined to wait until the product matures a bit and the level of functionality improves. In particular, I'm looking for the ability to port the display to the PC so I can enlarge it enough to be readable with my old eyes and the ability to do point and click tuning. Actually, a no display, PC only version of the P3 would be very interesting, especially if it got a little less expensive in the process of loosing it's local display and knobs. 73 Jack KZ5A K3 #4165 On 2/25/2011 3:26 PM, Bill Conkling wrote: Thanks, Don. [Elecraft] Useful P3 features
I am on my fifth day playing with P3. So far I found it very helpful ant it delivered everything that was promised. It is pretty much works like handy spectrum analyzer. As such, I found myself looking for few features that are common in spectrum analyzers. I did not read everything that was posted about P3 so far, some of these may have been proposed before: 1. Autoscale. When I switch from band to band I see different levels of noise, so I need to stop and adjust reference/scale for new band. It would be nice to be able to press button and scale the trace for optimum display for given span. 2.Peak search. Possibility to jump to next signal right/left of the VFO frequency (at least in CW and digital modes) would be very useful in contest when doing SP. For example, ability to assign function button pair with tap going next peak right and hold going to next peak left. I realize that the definition of peak can be tricky and there is risk sometimes to jump too far or too close. In modern spectrum analyzers usually user can set peak thresholds. 3. Marker level. Markers A or B when selected show frequency of the selected marker. It would be nice if the marker would show level as well, in dB when the amplitude scale in dB and in S-units when the scale is in S-units. 4. Signal level at VFO frequency. I realize space on that display is limited and the level can be roughly estimated on K3 s-meter and against the scale axes on P3. But for those of us OCD types (hi-hi) the accurate reading of level will give really good feeling. [Elecraft] K2 NB Question
Hi, Newbie question: I just finished my K2 and am slowly getting the options done and installed. My QTH has about S6 or so of power line pulse noise (especially noticeable on 80M) so I got the noise blanker. It is done and installed. Based on previous radios I expected turning it on to make some noticeable difference in the received audio. I can tell absolutely do difference at any setting (lo or hi th, NB1 or NB2 or off). There also is no difference in the noise on 80M. I can currently only discern about 2 SSB signals on 80 - seems like way too few, but who knows? I have checked the parts, the voltages (which are switching as designated on the schematic) and if I set to lo-th, I do see pulses applied to the base of the gate transistor. But no noticeable difference in the sound. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Question
One thing that I'm puzzled about is why it is that most of the posters are complaining about absolute frequency display and logging, when the requirements for DXCC awards and contest awards are awarded by band, not frequency. That's changing rather rapidly. In just the last two weeks the sponsors of the Russian DX Contest announced that all logs must now include frequency to the nearest KHz in order to be considered for awards. It is no longer acceptable to simply log 7000, 14000, 21000, etc. Still, there is no excuse for software authors to not understand and properly support the implementation of any supported transceiver - particularly when the K2, K3, all Kenwood and Yaesu FT-450, FT-950, FT-2000, FT-5000 and FT-9000 all have the same basic CAT command configuration (FA, FB, IF, RO and XO). 73, ... An alternative is the FET follower that Paul, W9AC documented for the D-104. Re: [Elecraft] K3
Larry, Most shipping places want to pack with 2 inches of material around the item. That can be bubblewrap, peanuts or even crumpled newspaper, so I suggest using that as a sensible guideline. I would suggest simply putting the K3 into a plastic bag (white kitchen trash bag), then wrap with a single layer of bubble wrap - be kind to the person unpacking it, just secure the bubblewrap with only enough tape to keep it in place, so they do not have to spend an hour unwrapping it (yes, many are wrapped unnecessarily with multiple layers of tape). Put an inch or two of bubblewrap or peanuts in the bottom of the box, set the K3 in, and add more bubblewrap or peanuts on the sides, and finally level off the top - put the completed RSA form on top and close the box. That is normally sufficient. Modern electronic equipment is not fragile (glass is fragile), so no fragile stickers are needed. Take the box to your favorite shipper. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/26/2011 2:02 PM, Larry stowell wrote: I'm hoping somebody has done what I have to do. Re: [Elecraft] K2 NB Question
Dick, The KNB2 works well on impulse noise such as automotive ignition noise or the impulse noise from lightning storms. However, it will not do much good on the more constant noises like atmospheric noise or power-line noise because that is more constant and slow in rise time. The KDSP2 does a good job on those latter kinds of noise. There may be nothing wrong with your KNB2. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/26/2011 4:24 PM, Barnett, Richard H wrote: Hi, Newbie question: I just finished my K2 and am slowly getting the options done and installed. Richard, For getting mild scratches out of most plastics, try wetting a smooth cloth with a thin oil, then rub, and rub, and rub. The small amount of heat developed by the rubbing will clear small scratches in the plastic. For deeper gouges, I am afraid replacement is the only cure I know of. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/26/2011 7:09 PM, Richard Thorpe wrote: Thank you to everyone who replied to my grunge question, now what about getting scratches out of those plastic display covers? If they are just fine surface scratches I use Turtle Wax. Take a small amount and put on a moistened cloth and polish in circular motions with your fingertip. Buff out with a dry cloth and examine. Repeat until sctatches are gone. Turtle Wax polishes out the fine scratches in plastic as long as they are just surface scratches and aren't to deep. As others commented, there are a number of plastic polishing products on the market. For small surface scratches, including those that make the plastic look hazy, go down to your local Auto Parts store and get the stuff used to clear the plastic covers over headlights on cars. Mothers makes one what works very well for me. It's very similar to the stuff used to polish aircraft windscreens. If it's severely damaged, consider Micro Mesh. They make a little kit that has everything you need to handle severe repairs on a fairly small surface (less than a car windshield in size :-). It's worked well for me.
