Re: [Elecraft] [XG2) Won't oscillate on 40m
It could be the crystal but that's really rare. The first thing I'd check is the battery. If it's low the oscillator will stop working and it might be marginal so the lowest-activity crystal stops first - in your case perhaps the 40 meter crystal. Appears to have been carefully assembled, and puts out a good signal on 80 and 20 meters, but 40 meters output is nonexistent. The band-switch is fine, so I suspect either the coupling capacitor before the crystal, or the crystal itself is bad. Just for my edification, would crystal failure be an expected result if someone transmits into the XG2? I'm trying to understand why only the one band would go dead. Re: [Elecraft] Resistance Checks on pg. 45 (K3)
Yes, you are fine, Shane. Note that step says, Your DMM may indicate the value is so high it is out of the range of the instrument and as it does when in ohms mode and the probes are not touching anything. So it's reading what your Fluke reads when the leads are not touching anything. All is good. That check is simply to ensure there isn't a short circuit across those connections. In that case your Fluke would read some value much less than 35K (35,000) ohms. The same is true of the check on the following page, although there the circuits will show some resistance, hence values to look for. When doing these sort of checks, it's often valuable to put your meter in manual ranging, so it doesn't keep cycling across resistance ranges. That can produce very confusing readings. Have fun! I've been assembling a K3 and I'm up to the point for doing resistance checks in the assembly manual on pg. 44. And yet I know nothing about resistance checks (or electronics). I'm worried about the 1st check where I'm supposed to check the 12VDC IN connectors on the rear panel. I bought a Fluke 117 DMM, switched it to the Ohm sign, its set to auto ranging, then I put the black pin in the black 12V connecter of the K3, put red on red (made sure the pins are touching metal in the connectors) and I'm not seeing anything (just 0L on the display of my DMM). And I've also stepped through the manual range settings as well, but to no avail. However the following checks on pg. 45 showed me some numbers. I can't tell if they're good numbers yet as I'm trying to figure out the decimal places and if they match what the manual says, but at least there I'm seeing numbers. So I was afraid to plug it in and do the initial power check. Can anyone comment? Much appreciated. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KPA500 Temperature
Sois anyone monitoring the peak temperature on their KPA500? I'm kind of doing that, and it seems like mine gets up to the mid 50's C before it more or less stabilizes. It's kind of neat how the fan speeds up as needed, although I really can't hear it that well. Compared to other amps I've used, this one is S I L E N T! I had some concern that just one fan would move enough air to keep the temperature down, but I think it does the job appropriately. What's neat is you can override the auto feature for fan speed with a menu setting. I suppose that might be necessary if you were running RTTY or something. If I make a relatively long transmission (on CW), the temperature on the amp goes up into the mid 50's C. I assume that is normal. The fan speeds up sufficiently to keep it at, or near, that temperature as far as I can tell at this point. As soon as I stop transmitting, the temperature drops like a rock! I think the fan keeps going for a while to help accomplish that. Per the manual, the heatsink temperature rating is something like 90 C., so I'm not even close to testing that. As I've said before, I'm not very smart about amps, but I assume a lot of amps run temperatures much higher than this one does. Besides, since it seems to, more or less, level out in the mid 50's, I assume that is more than reasonable. Hopefully I'm right about that. I have adjusted my drive to about 27 watts from the K3. That gives me 480 watts plus out of the amp, according to the amp's internal wattmeter. My objective is to run this thing somewhat conservatively, and hopefully that's what I'm doing. I can easily get 600 watts out of the amp, but why do it? I'm getting an S unit and a half, more or less, improvement by running the amp. 600 watts would be a negligible increase over that. Right now the amp is showing about 35 C. while it is idle. That's the same that my K3 shows when it is idle. On a somewhat extended transmission my K3 PA temp goes up to the mid 40's C, and the amp goes into the mid 50's. That seems reasonable intuitively, but I'd be very interested to hear whether or not that's what others are experiencing. I also assume that if I were running RTTY, or some other intensive mode, I would need to back off of the power on the amp, just as I do with the K3. I don't operate that mode very often, but I know it's hard on PA's. The manual doesn't say much about that--it only says 500 watts output without indicating any difference by mode. Most other amps I see have a reduced power rating for RTTY, etc. For now, I'll assume that's an oversight. The main thing I haven't tested yet is the amp's performance on 6 meters. My operation on that band is pretty casual, but it was a major factor in my decision to make the investment. 6 meters can be a bunch of fun when conditions are right. I think making this amp 6 meters capable was a very smart move. I have one question at this point--when I switch my K3 to 30 meters the amp recognizes that fact, and displays that band. However, there is no indication that the amp works on 30 meters, and there is not an optional band switch for 30 meters--probably, at a minimum, because that band is limited to 200 watts. I haven't even tapped the key on that band with the amp on. So, my question is whether or not the amp is 30 meters capable, even though it would probably violate the power limitation rule. Well, I'm obviously having fun with the amp, but I'll probably have it turned off much of the time. Amps like this give you a nice boost, but I prefer to go a cappela for the most part. I've never felt amp usage should be automatic. Dave W7AQK === Email scanned by PC Tools - No viruses or spyware found. However, I use the K3 per-band power setting to set the amp output for 200 watts maximum on 30 meters. That K3 per-band power setting when the KPA500 is on-line is REALLY nice!! Re: [Elecraft] K2 Key Out?
Julian - Yes, there is. Check the K2 notes pages on the Elecraft web site, or build your own, which is what I did.All that is required, if I remember correctly, is a resistor (anything between 1000 and 2200 Ohms, 1/4 watt) and a NPN transistor capable of handling the required amplifier keying current and voltage. A 2N3053 / ECG125 would be one example. A 2N would be another, but if you are using a vacuum-tube amplifier, check the key up voltage across the amplifier keying jack, and size the driver transistor accordingly. This assumes your amplifier has a positive voltage across the key jack when in standby mode. If it is negative,. you may need a small driver relay. Most amplifiers, not all, will not need the relay. Inside the K2, connect the 2200 ohm resistor from the 8T (8 volts on transmit) line in the K2 to the 2N3053 base, ground the 2N3053 emitter, and the 2N3053 collector connects to the amplifier key port. There is (or at least was) a small kit offered that contains the needed parts and a small PC board. I used a small square of perf-board and hand wired the thing using the component leads, not printed traces needed. I also installed a RCA phono jack on the rear panel using one of the unused extra holes. Of course, you could drill an extra hole if needed, or just use a pigtail with the RCA jack hanging on the end. I also installed a .005 uFd / 500 volt disk ceramic cap across the output jack just in case there were RF issues, but don't know if it was actually necessary. In any case, it works fine. - Jim, KL7CC Julian, G4ILO wrote: Due to serious illness I am looking at simplifying and downsizing my radio equipment and returning to QRP using my old K2. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Key Out?
Jim Instead of using 8T to drive the keying circuit, you should use the fall of 8R - 8R falls before 8T is asserted and stays down longer than 8T is active. It will follow the menu setting for t-r (8R HOLD) and the delay setting. Using 8T could cause hot switching at the amplifier in some cases. The circuit on the Elecraft website uses 8R, and in fact 8T is not present at J13 for the B level (post SN 3000) RF Boards. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/21/2011 9:47 AM, Jim Wiley wrote: Julian - Yes, there is. All the WARC bands, plus 6 meters are on the 2nd row. I've now set my 30 meter position to max at 200 watts. Pretty slick! Dave W7AQK === Email scanned by PC Tools - No viruses or spyware found. Re: [Elecraft] Rb GPS DO comparison
The drift rate of 1e-11 per month or so is regarded after one month of conituous operation. The first month after turn-on is different. It usually takes few days, sometimes couple weeks to reach the final drift rate. After that it is pretty much constant slope. Every time you turn off the clock and then turn i t on again, depends on the duration of off time, the frequency will drift initially at higher rate. It takes time to Rubidium atoms to reach equilibrium position in the cloud inside the resonance cell. When you turn the unit off, the atoms of rubidium (which is metal alk ali by the way) will fall down (gravity) and form little metal drop on the bottom of the cell. When you turn it on, the cell is heated and the atoms evaporate and go into the cloud form. By the way, ambient temperature variations have much higher effect on frequency than just aging. Magnetic fields are also detrimental. Don't place it in close proximity to CRT monitors or dynamic speakers. If, at the other extreme, each month's drift is independent of the previous month's, then the expected frequency at the end will be described by a Gaussian distribution with mean = the starting point, and standard deviation scaled by the square root of the number of months. In practice, one would expect some serial correlation between monthly drifts, so a bias would be added to the expected mean. [Elecraft] Two questions: ESD Solder issue w/ PC Board
Hi Everyone! I have two questions that I would like to pose to the group about grounding and soldering PC boards: 1. I know about ESD precautions, and I do take them. I have a wrist strap, and my soldering iron is ESD safe. I am working on my K2 in the basement. I have pained concrete floors and walls. I sit in a rolling chair that doesn't seem to have any static issues. And, my work table is a painted wood bench. As long as I wear my wrist strap, I should be OK due to the environment I am in, right? I'd be more concerned if I was working in a carpeted room or the like. Unless it is winter and I wear a sweater, I never have ESD problems down in the shack. 2. Has anyone else had this happen to them...You go to solder your components onto the board, and the component or board doesn't want to take the solder immediately? I had this problem with the 160 meter board yesterday. I am using a Weller soldering station with a tip that looks to be in good order, Kester 60/40 solder, and proper technique. Any ideas? 73 Thanks, David KC9EHQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

You can get it in semi-solid form and apply with a toothpick, or in a flux pen, or in a liquid that can be shot onto the joint with a bottle that has a metal needle-like applicator. I like the bottle, but they all work. The WB5RVZ instructions include links to a number of videos and other tutorial sites that are very informative and helpful when gearing up for a daunting building project. 73, Tony KT0NY -- http://www.isb.edu/faculty/facultydir.aspx?ddlFaculty=352 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] P3 alternating blinking red LEDs
I'm sure the reference level setting is why you don't see any signals as you have already surmised. As someone else mentioned I think the red blinking LED is normal. At least my PIII has a red blinking LED or two inside which I was a bit surprised to discover. I ate concluded it was probably trying to signal that it had found some rare DX or that the Elecraft monster was attempting to escape. One can't be too careful about things like that! Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot
K7WIA's experience with his 6m receiver got me to try this with my K3. I have an ARR P50VDG preamp installed and see typically S4 flickering up to S5 for noise connected either 6m yagi. Reducing RFGain immediately increases s-meter reading with the ARR preamp so I switched it off. Noise is almost not readable on the s-meter and reducing RFGain does not result in increase in s-meter reading until I rotate the RFGain less than 3-oclock postion. There is not enough s-meter resolution to tell if there is any reduction in noise (none detectable by ear until s-meter begins to rise). Finally, I tried this with the internal K3 preamp turned on. Normal noise reading is S3. Reducing RFGain exhibited the same as not using any preamp except s-meter stays at S-3 until I rotate below 3-oclock position whereby the reading climbs above S3. Considering that I am in rural Alaska I should have less ambient noise floor than K7WIA but do not see the behavior he is seeing. Comments? I would be interested to know if he is using a K3 (radio was not specified) and whether that was running with a preamp and what kind? My take on my readings is that the ARR has more than enough gain (maybe too much) and I am seeing amplified noise. Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot
Ed, I suspect he was not using a K3 because he said the S-meter did reduce when the RF Gain was reduced. You could turn off the K3 preamp and turn on the attenuator and see if that drops the ambient noise level. With your external preamp, I suspect you can reduce the K3 gain substantially. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/21/2011 1:13 PM, Edward R. I want to thank all of you for the outpouring of comments and suggestions regarding the K2. I did not realize all the options available and you all have provided me with good information to evaluate making my selection. As mentioned to some, my goal is to get down to one main radio (besides my K1) which is capable of battery operation both at home and in the field and has a good track record. As my soldering days are long behind me, the K2 has a great following upon which I feel I can rely. Since I am a casual operator with no contesting desires other than sprints and 90% CW there are many features which would not be necessary. At a 9 o'clock position, my K3 indicates S-7 when the K3 is connected to a dummy load. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/21/2011 5:04 PM, K7WIA wrote: Don, when the RF gain is fully cw ( max ) I have 3 bars on the S Meter, when I slowly reduce the RF gain control I watch the S Meter and when I get it just past the 9 o'clock position the S Meter will reduce to only 1 bar showing. you can hear the background noise drop as you do this, then I just add a bit more gain back just enough to hear the noise increase back up. the lowest I can reduce the S meter is to 1 bar showing, I add just enough gain back to get the 2nd bar to flicker.. if i reduce the gain to much the S meter will start to climb back up in the normal maner Ed K7WIA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I don't know but I like it this way, as my noise floor changes through the day I do have to readjust the sweet spot, but it is just a very small turn of the RF knob I checked this with the noise blanker on and off and I see the same effect, it's just with the blanker off I can only reduce it to 2 bars on the meter. could be I got a special K3.. I think the RF pot has a weak spot near the CW end. I don't know how it's made, but if the resistance is decreasing as it goes toward CW then it is minimum at three o'clock and increases slightly to full CW. Just my 2 cents. Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot
Ed, Ok, I have just confirmed your experience (but I cannot explain it). If I tune to a band where the noise level is S-3 and I reduce the RF Gain a bit (to the 2:30 or 3 o'clock position), the S-meter reading will reduce, but if I reduce the RF Gain more CCW, the S-meter reading will increase as expected. The schematics tell me that the reduced RF Gain is the same as increased AGC - so there is something strange going on between the full CW position of the RF Gain control and the 3 o'clock position. It does not respond as I would expect. Maybe Lyle can chime in with some words of wisdom to explain this happening - Wayne is on vacation, so I don't think he can be of much help right now. Ed, I no longer doubt your report - but I do find it a bit strange. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/21/2011 4:52 PM, K7WIA wrote: Ok we did the RF calibration per the K3 utility program using the XG3 for the signal source and I see no change with the way the S meter responds, being I use the K3 for 6 meters only I set the S meter calibration for that band using the XG3 this is how my S meter is set up in the Confg. menu. FWIW: K3 #642 does it too. I never mess with the RF gain so I never noticed it before. Full gain on mine is at 5 o'clock. S-meter drops until 4 o'clock, then starts climbing. What I do NOT notice is an improved S/N on a very weak signal from my service monitor at the S-meter minimum. Signal goes down too. Not sure, but my thinker thinks I expected that. It would be a nice effect, but I don't see this on the low bands although I just tried it on 15m. What I see is the S meter level remaining constant until the RF Gain is reduced to the point that the bars begin to rise above the band noise. What I am going to try is setting the RF gain just at the point before the bar advance pas the band noise. As I have my S meter set for absolute, I am seeing about an S9 level on the meter from the noise. I can reduce the RF gain until the next bar is displayed and then back down just to where it goes out and the noise level from the speaker is greatly reduced. I will see how things work on a net in a few minutes. I don't see a visible dip, though. I don't know if this could be caused by a dirty roller inductor, I'm going to clean it. When I switched over to the 706 I noticed intermittent the cross needles go straight up. Re: [Elecraft] [OT] 15m self oscillation
Mike, The first response is what happens if you transmit into a dummy load. If the problem disappears when connected to a dummy load, you either have a parasitic oscillation or you have problem with your antenna system. Since this situation occurs with multiple transceivers, I highly suspect an antenna system problem. An antenna analyzer may reveal the problem. 73, Don W3FPR On 7/21/2011 7:19 PM, Mike Rodgers wrote: Not necessarily with a k3 but any rig. I think the main selling point of Elecraft product is that older version can be field upgrade to the latest version. This can also be adversely interpreted in a naughty way as something 'work-in-progress' in the market :) - well, all depends how you view it. If you need a P3 now, just go for it.
