[Elecraft] noise on SSB modulation

2011-09-23 Thread DK5EW
Hi all,
I use at my K3 a HEIL PRO SET ELITE "IC", I had this as I use it at my
old ICOM IC-275H as well.
Now I recognised that I have a small noise on modulation like a fan that
gives me some power output when I just push PTT.
OK I have in my shack 2 additional fans for cooling the PA so I switched
them of. The noise is lower but still there.
and there are no other noise sources. So my setting for the HEIL headset
are:
- MIC: 25
- CMR: 25
- MIC SEL: RP + HIGH BIAS
- MIC+LIN: OFF
Do you have any idea if I can change setting to cancel that noise ?
I can not believe that the microphone is that sensitive to pick up all
little noises around.
best regards Erwin/DK5EW

Re: [Elecraft] noise on SSB modulation

2011-09-23 Thread Buck k4ia
It is not a fan, it is RF or other noise getting back into the mic
circuit. I had the same problem. Check the two mods on the Elecraft K3
Enhancements and Application Notes page. Look for Older K3 Mods >
"Front Panel Microphone" and "Improving the Immunity of the real panel
RS232 and audio connectors" to see if they apply to your rig's serial
number. Do both to solve your problem.

Try reducing your compression setting. I get a noise at 25 also.

Hi Michael,
When I got my DVR I cogitated on how it all work and wrote up an
explanation that helped me understand it. I put it in the KE7X K3 book
and also put it up on

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 DVR AF Play over air...

Can anyone tell me how you can playback the K3's DVR AF Play file over
the air?

Also when using AF REC and recording a short received clip of audio and
then going to play it back there is a large empty spot (after playing
it) and it eventually plays a previous audio clip following the one
that was just recorded. Is this the way it's supposed to work?

Thank you,

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 - Z-Bracket Assembly Question

2011-09-23 Thread Doug VE3VS
Quote "Finally getting started on Serial 366. Got to page 22 - attaching the
Z-bracket to the heat sink. Using the 5/16" flat head screws all of
the screws bottom out before the bracket is tight against the heat
sink. Has anyone else seen this? I did double check the screw
length. I don't think the bracket should be loose. "

Hmmm! Unusual. Earlier this week I finished assembling #402. I used
hardware exactly as called for in the instructions. No problem with
assembling the Z-bracket onto the heat sink, nor with fastening the bottom
cover. I was one screw short at one point during the assembly, but simply
used one from the "extras" package to complete the work.

I have been successfully integrating the KPA500 into my station, and giving
it a good workout during the past couple of days.

[Elecraft] [K3] FYI: MCU load failure; K3 not responding error message

I replaced the K3 USB-Serial adapter with a TrippLite Keyspan USA19-HS

time to troubleshoot the problem, so it would be inappropriate to speculate
what the root cause was. YMMV.

[Elecraft] K3 Remoting

Glad to hear Wayne is thinking about equipment for remote operation.
I was hoping the KX3 would serve as a remote head for the K3. That would be
perfect for travelling, with the options of either operating QRP, or going

[Elecraft] QRP Project, Berlin

2011-09-23 Thread Raymond METZGER
Hi Nigel,

I bought my first Elecraft rig (K2/100) in 2006 from QRP Project in Germany,
since I found their ad in the German Ham magazine "Funk Amateur". This
company has a very friendly and small staff, Peter (DL2FI) and Nikolai
(DL7NIK).
I visited their booth at the Friedrichshafen Hamfest in 2008 and 2010.
During the June 2010 event, Elecraft had its own booth just beneath the one
of QRP Project and Eric presented the P3 for the first time in Europe.
They also sell kits from other sources. As Peter told me, QRP Project is
also doing repairs and giving support, which may be interesting in terms of
shipping costs for us Europeans.
Their web site is www.qrpproject.de and speaks English and German !

Now, concerning prices, you must take into account that sales from a German
sellers are necessarily subject to the German VAT (I don't remember the
current rate), but you should save some shipping costs.
In France and probably in UK too, small shipments going through the Post
(USPS in the US and your local Post in UK) are not subject to VAT, in which
case, it's better to buy directly from Elecraft than from Germany..
Last, but not least, the current GBP/EUR rate has also to be looked at,
specifically within these strange period.

Re: [Elecraft] noise on SSB modulation

2011-09-23 Thread David Gilbert

If you are using any kind of rig control with your computer (and
therefore have a shield connection between the K3 and the computer, such
as via an RS-232 cable), make sure the chassis of your K3 is securely
bonded to the chassis of the computer with a very short length of large
gauge wire or section of shielded braid. I had to go down to less than
a foot of RG-8 shielded braid to eliminate all hum on my signal.

KPA500 that I use with my K3. I would, however, like to use the KPA500 with
the K2 w.ithout having to upgrade the K2 to 100W. Is this something that
anyone has experimented with? Tnx. Len

Re: [Elecraft] Keying KPA500 with K2

2011-09-23 Thread Phil & Debbie Salas
The KPA500 will give you 12-13dB gain. So your 15-watt K2 will give youi
200-300 watts out of the KPA500. I use my KPA500 at 190-200 watts output on 30
meters when I need a little extra "oomph". I drive it with about 10 watts with
my K3.

Re: [Elecraft] noise on SSB modulation

2011-09-23 Thread Martin

This occurs when CMP and MIC settings are very high, while TX Gate is
set too low.

Maybe an increase in TX Gate level and reducing MIC and/or CMP will cure
the other problem with the transverter.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 - Z-Bracket Assembly Question

2011-09-23 Thread Robert Dorchuck
The holes in the heat sink were definitely not deep enough. Gary at
Elecraft Support told me to use the 3/16" flat head screws to attach
the bracket. I then used the 5/16 screws for the top cover where the
length did not matter. The only other problem was the transfomer
mounting bolt - it was not threaded all the way. I was lucky and
found a bolt at Ace Hardware . The amp is now assembled and works
like a champ.

73, Bob W6VY

---
Hmmm! Unusual. Earlier this week I finished assembling #402. I used
hardware exactly as called for in the instructions. No problem with
assembling the Z-bracket onto the heat sink, nor with fastening the
bottom
cover. I was one screw short at one point during the assembly, but
simply
used one from the "extras" package to complete the work.

I have been successfully integrating the KPA500 into my station, and
giving
it a good workout during the past couple of days.

I've tried three different jumpers [the one that came with the P3, and
two others I'm very sure are good], with no change. Most of the time,
the P3 works just great. I'm pretty certain the case screws/2-D
thingy's are grounded, I took the pieces off and they all show
continuity and no paint.

Before cluttering up the list anymore, I'll try to figure out the P3
Utility and see if I can get a screen capture. It may take a bit of
time since this anomaly occurs only infrequently.

[Elecraft] Voltages for Q5 and U8?

2011-09-23 Thread K7MH
I am troubleshooting a K1 that has no output.
The guide says to check Q5 and U8 voltages but I do not find them listed
anywhere.
The DC voltages table lists U8 pin numbers but no voltages. I see nothing
for Q5.
If anyone knows what they are or where they are listed I would appreciate a
reply.
The receiver works ok and all the voltage and resistance measurements listed
in the
assembly part of the manual and those of U9 Q8 and Q7 are all good.

Re: [Elecraft] Voltages for Q5 and U8?

2011-09-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

I do not know where those DC voltages are listed. For as long as the K1
has been out, I don't understand why that omission had not been spotted
long ago.

However, back to your problem - the quickest path to resolution is to go
first to page 5 of the manual troubleshooting appendix and build an RF
Probe (if you have a 'scope with a 10X probe, it can be used instead).
The RF Probe does not have to be pretty, or shielded or anything like
that. If necessary, punch the leads of the components through a piece
of cardboard to provide support, just connect the leads as indicated.

OK, RF Probe in hand, or 'scope (if using a 'scope, the Expected
voltages will be shown in peak to peak which are 2.8 times the RMS
voltages listed), go to the Transmit Signal Tracing section. What you
are looking for is the first stage where the RF voltages are
significantly *lower* than the expected value. If the voltages are
higher, that is OK, and is normal for a K1 that is not developing any RF
output.

Once you have identified the failing stage (the one where the output is
lower than expected, stop and let us know - we can help with detailed
analysis of that stage.

[Elecraft] Windows 7 Update, FTDI KUSB and Fluke

2011-09-23 Thread Paul Kirley
Windows 7 Update advises me that an optional update is available for
"Fluke - Other hardware - USB Serial Converter 706 KB"
Windows says that this update was published "Yesterday", i.e., 9/22/11.

The only USB Serial Converter that I have is the FTDI KUSB purchased
from Elecraft on last January 26.

Back in April, I got similar updates from Windows, but those updates
included "FTDI" in their descriptions. As far as I know, my KUSB
worked
fine both before and after those April updates.

I am aware that there have been problems with non-FTDI KUSB cables, and
I would like to avoid those problems.

Does anyone know if Fluke has taken over FTDI, or is this an update
that should not be elected?

Thanks and 73,

FTDI is chipset used by a variety of vendors. KeySpan, Fluke, and others sell

The Fluke adapter uses the same VID (vendor ID: 0403=FTDI) and PID
(product ID: FT232 USB UART) as the generic FTDI USB serial converter.
In my case the USB port in the SDR-IQ also uses the FTDI default
VID/PID and the "new" Fluke driver (FTDI 2.8.14) was installed for
it.

I suspect the FTDI version of KUSB also uses the default VID/PID

[Elecraft] cw weight reduces as speed increases

2011-09-23 Thread Dale Boresz
I good friend has kindly lent me his K3. I have noticed that the cw
weight changes inversely proportional to the speed setting -- just as it
does on my old K2. The timing sounds decent below about 35 wpm, but once
the speed gets to around 40 wpm, the weight becomes very light, and the
keying sounds like it's being generated by a poorly adjusted bug.

I connected up an oscilloscope to monitor the keying envelope while
sending a string of dits, and it's easily seen that at slower speeds the
dit length is greater than the space between dits. At around 35 wpm,
this reverses and the dit length becomes progressively shorter than the
space between dits.

I would expect that regardless of speed, the dit length should equal the
length of time between dits. Or, at least the ratio should remain
constant, and a function of the weight setting.

I also tried to key the radio using an external Logikey K-3 keyer which
*does* maintain a constant and equal dit-to-space ratio throughout its
range, but the K3 still shortens the dits as speed is increased.

Is there any way to fix this?

Re: [Elecraft] cw weight reduces as speed increases

2011-09-23 Thread Wayne Burdick
Dale,

Keying weight would, in an ideal world, not change with speed. But the
reality is that the low-noise synthesizers in both the K2 and K3 take
some time to switch between transmit and receive. We take this into
account, but that can only be done up to a point because of various
timing relationships in hardware and firmware.

Please try "QRQ" mode, in which the synthesizer doesn't move. This
allows for far more accurate timing at all speeds.
