Re: [Elecraft] K3 - FM deviation

Same here. It's an issue that was raised many moons ago and I believe that
Elecraft made some software changes to address this. In my humble opinion,
it's nowhere near right yet.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - FM deviation

I've had complaints my FM signal is low in audio (which implies low
deviation). Mic gain control is inoperative in FM mode (turned up to
60 with no change). I checked CONFIG: FM DEV and it is set to 5.0
KHz. It can be raised to 6.0 but I haven't changed it as that seems
not the proper way to raise transmit audio. I'm guessing this
setting is fixed at the factory.

I have no RF level issues: signal is full quieting on FM. Even
yelling into the mic with my lips touching the mic makes no
difference (according to the listener).

Is there an epot to control this or hard pot inside the radio?

This recently came up on the Yahoo K3 list where N4PJ reported a 1.0V drop
using a RS-35M (13.6 to 12.6 key down). I also use the RS.35M and my drop
is 0.4V (14.6 to 14.2 with 110W key down). I'd check that your connections
at the RS-35M are solid. Many of these hum slightly which can cause the
nuts to loosen slightly over time.

I run my voltage higher to improve TX IMD performance on SSB. Elecraft's
maximum spec is 15V. There's a wheeled pot on the underside of the RS-35M
control board (or any Astron for that matter) which adjusts the output
voltage but be careful when adjusting it!

Ron,

I didn't think to look at that last night, but I am testing it now into
a dummy load at 50W. I am using an MFJ-4125 with about 18" of #10 "zip
cord." This goes to a PowerPole DC distribution panel and there is
another run of about 30" of #10 to the K3. On receive, I have 13.4 -
13.5VDC (1.15 - 1.16A). On transmit, it drops to 12.4 - 12.5VDC
(~14.5A). The wires are not even remotely warm.

I do not have time to test with my Astron RS-35A at the moment, but I
will when I get home this afternoon. I also have an Astron RS-20A I can
experiment with.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Voltage drop

2012-02-26 Thread Don Wilhelm
Joel,

Measure the voltage drop right at the power supply terminals - that will
tell you how much of that total voltage drop is due to the power
supply. The rest is in the wire and connectors - there are 12
connectors if your PowerPole distribution box has fuses, and 8
connectors if no fuses. The connectors can account for about 0.2 volts
drop at 14.5 amps, and another 0.015 volts drop in the 8 feet of #10
wire (you have to count the length of the return path too. So 0.22
volts of the total drop can be attributed to wire and the connectors.

A 1 volt drop at a 15 amp current draw is not unusual.

[Elecraft] Great decision on K3

2012-02-26 Thread Keith Heimbold
It was November last year when I decided on a "fully loaded" slightly used K3
versus a FTDX5000 and I am so stoked that I made that decision.

I still monitor the user group for the high end Yaesu 5K because I am still
interested in understand how the two rigs compare. One of today's posting was
focused on roofing filters with a couple folks posting complaints about the
stock filters for SSB on the 5K and their performance. Complaints about
filters on a $5k plus rig, woah! Made me smile inside and out.

One noted gent who I have gotten to know a little stated about the performance
delta in this regard with the K3. Man, I am SO STOKED that I got this rig.
Thanks Eric and Wayne and the Elecraft team for providing us with a better
value and performance alternative to big three. I am waiting anxiously for my
KX3 to arrive and I as soon as i close my next big business consulting project
(in the works) I am getting another K3.

[Elecraft] Stereo phone plug on back of K3

2012-02-26 Thread Phil Hystad
Back around the time I got my K3 (serial number #3799) there were several other
K3 owners who had problems (like shorted audio circuit or something like that)
when they put a mono 3.5 mm plug into the stereo rear panel phones outlet.

I remember the warning: use stereo only for rear panel phones.

Was this ever changed so that you can now (accidentally maybe) plug a mono into
the stereo and everything would be fine (accept for losing the stereo channels
in your ears).

I have not done this but the question was raised when I was chatting with a new
K3 owner.

[Elecraft] Low sensitivity on K2...

2012-02-26 Thread Robin Kiszka
I have two K2s, and I find on one of them that the sensitivity is much lower.
I see this when doing a test with an XG1 signal generator.

The problem is that the "low sensitivity" rig is one that I bought built,
while the one that works fine is a rig I built myself. I have tried to
reallign the rig, but without much improvement to say the least. It just
seems that AF gain is far more responsive on my own built rig, and this is
accross all bands.

Any suggestions?

thanks and 73

Thanks for the suggestions for fixing my K1 keyer problem, but 1) it

Re: [Elecraft] (K3) KPA-250 (sort of)

2012-02-26 Thread Edward R. Cole
After quite a bit of modification&dickering with an open-frame dc
relay that I had hoped would work as TR relay, it appears it needs to
be inside a totally shielded enclosure. I'm getting feedback into
amp thru the relay that is causing it to generate RF without drive
(oscillate). I need a relay that can be included inside the
amplifier enclosure so probably will investigate some HD SPDT pcb
relays and separate the input relay from the output relay. Amp is
running well with just input and output coax lines.

So I checked into the Elecraft SSB Net with the barefoot K3/10 today
(14w). I did use the new coax lines that will serve the amp and the
QRO tuner (Drake MN2000). Drake power meter is generous when
compared with my Bird43 (with 500H element). New stations block diagram:
http://www.kl7uw.com/2012_Station.jpg
I will post more info on the amplifier here:

Got to run the snowblower so my wife can get thru the 2-foot snow

Re: [Elecraft] Low sensitivity on K2...

2012-02-26 Thread Don Wilhelm
Robin,

What filter were you using when doing the sensitivity measurements? Did
you use the same filter width for each?
If they both have the KSB2 installed, try doing a comparison with the
OP1 filter selected.

Is one K2 above SN 3000 and the other below 3000? If so, yes there may
be differences. The very early K2s had a winding ratio of 13:4 on T7
while the newer ones use a 20:5 ratio - that will account for about a 3
dB difference. The early K2s IF crystals did not make a consistent
filter as the newer crystals. The newer crystals are installed in all
K2s above SN 2560. There may be differences in the AGC settings that
will change the apparent response - turn AGC off when making similar checks.

There can be significant differences introduced by the filter
alignment. I suggest using Spectrogram (or Spectrum Lab or other audio
spectrum analyzer) to look at the filter shape and the output level - dB
above the noise floor makes a good comparison, while raw signal
amplitude does not compare well because the AF Gain will not be set the
same.

The K2 Dial Calibration article on my website www.w3fpr.com has
information about setting the K2 filters if you are not familiar with
all the steps involved.

If the above does not resolve it for you, you may have to build up the
crystal oscillator shown in the Troubleshooting section of the manual
and do Receive Signal Tracing on both K2s to find where the difference
is coming from.

Don W3FPR

Re: [Elecraft] Low sensitivity on K2...

2012-02-26 Thread Robin Kiszka
Thanks for the replies. I can try to answer as follows:

The "good" rig is in the 3800 series, and has:
KDSP2, KAT2, KBT2, KSB2, KNB1, K160RX, KIO2

The "weak" rig is 5900 series and has:
KAF2, KPA100, KSB2, KNB1, K160RX, KIO2

I have used spectogram, but not for the 5900 series rig.

I did a quick VAC measurement across the speaker and found that the good rig
had a poweful 2 VAC, while the weak rig had as low as 0.5 VAC. I did some
reading and tried to check the settings of R1 on the local board against the
VDC on pin 5 of U2 on the weak rig. It looked OK close to the 3.9 mark, but
that was close to the edge of its run, just a slight tweak got the DCV up to
about 1.3 VAC on the speaker - though audio was beginning to distort. On the
good rig the audio is always good even though the same measurement gives 2
VAC.

All these I tried using Preamp off and what I could regard as similar filter
settings, though the two radios have different filtering techniques, DSP vs.
non-DSP. But that said, I was listening on 10m and could heard DX from state
side on the good rig, but hardly audible on the weak rig, about S3 compared
to S1. Maybe the DSP unit is preamplifying the signal and that's the issue?

I did try switching the NB module in the rigs, it made no difference. I
should have tried with the SSB unit as well, but didn't think about it at
the time.

Maybe this has shed some more light on the setup here.

thanks again and 73

[Elecraft] Firmware update process stalled K3

2012-02-26 Thread Axel Kaiser

I wanted to install the latest firmware beta release (4.47).
The process started, on the K3 display MCU LD appeared, but after a while the
message appeared, that the update failed.
The K3 stayed in the MCU LD mode and the K3 utility showed that there is a
communication problem with the COM port.
Trying to reactivate the COM communication failed with all possible COM ports
my ELTIMA virtual port cable creates.
Turning the K3 on and off didn't change anything, the MCU LD mode stays on.
Also reinitializing the ports by turning the computer off and on again didn't
change a thing, I could not get the COM port communication started again.

Does anybody have an idea how to get back to normal without starting the EE
INIT procedure (loosing all parameters)?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Re: [Elecraft] Firmware update process stalled K3

2012-02-26 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Yes, the firmware load was interrupted.

Go through the procedure described in K3 Utility Help, Troubleshooting, MCU
Boot Loader.

Subject: [Elecraft] Firmware update process stalled K3

I wanted to install the latest firmware beta release (4.47).
The process started, on the K3 display MCU LD appeared, but after a while
the message appeared, that the update failed.
The K3 stayed in the MCU LD mode and the K3 utility showed that there is a
communication problem with the COM port.
Trying to reactivate the COM communication failed with all possible COM
ports my ELTIMA virtual port cable creates.
Turning the K3 on and off didn't change anything, the MCU LD mode stays on.
Also reinitializing the ports by turning the computer off and on again
didn't change a thing, I could not get the COM port communication started
again.

Does anybody have an idea how to get back to normal without starting the EE
INIT procedure (loosing all parameters)?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

[Elecraft] Elecraft Rig Comparisons

2012-02-26 Thread Phil Hystad
The Elecraft web page that shows the rig comparisons includes part of Sherwood
Engineering's table of performance comparison metrics.

I think a nice addition to the Elecraft web site is such a similar comparison
matrix for the Elecraft rigs -- certainly there are enough now to have a fairly
descent comparison. So, I am thinking of the K1, KX1, KX3, K2, and K3 rigs
where receiver performance metrics are displayed in matrix format just like the
Sherwood Engineering. Maybe Elecraft can contract Sherwood Engineering to do
the actual measurements.

And, a similar feature comparison page would be useful. Again, there is a
growing list of transceiver products where a feature comparison would be
beneficial -- especially to those new to the Elecraft lineup.

Re: [Elecraft] Key Down Amps - Now really OT!

2012-02-26 Thread Luis V. Romero
As a student of these issues, I dissagree. Its telling from your comments
that a lot of you come from an Engineering perspective. And while I can
understand that because of my engineering background, my marketing
background knows better. Customer support is paramount in the success of
any product, from toasters to transceivers.

The core competency of Apple is not their Hardware, which is competent, but
not overwhelmingly so. It is not their software either, which is also
competent, but also not overwhelmingly so.

The core competency of Apple is their CULTURE MARKETING PROWESS! They
create a "cult" for their products that "sticks" after the sale. This
creates goodwill for the eventual screw-up.

They invest in creating disciples from users.

This is true in my field: Broadcast Engineering... Panasonic had product
just as good, and in many respects, very superior to Sony. But everybody in
Newsgathering circles wanted a Betacam SP camcorder on their shoulder and
not a M-II camcorder. Because Sony knew how to create customer loyalty with
responsiveness. Or in digital video effects, Abekas Video Systems vs Ampex.
I lived through those.

Elecraft is like Apple (or Abekas or Sony), not necesarily because of their
extremely effective technology; It helps, but its not everything... Yaesu's
FT5000 and Kenwood's TS590 are competent competitors, one above and one
below K3's price point. Elecraft is exceptional partly because of us, their
customers, who care so much as to give input and evangelize the product. And
because they listen to us and respect our opinion, they galvanize the
relationship beyond the sale of the product.

Eric and Wayne are smart because they understand that their next successful
products lie in our imaginations, not just theirs. An they care enough about
us customers to listen and support us with uncompromising responsiveness. I
believe this is a top down directive in Elecraft's corporate culture from
what I have been able to discern. Unfortunately, its the first thing that
gets cut in the "comglomerization" of a startup... Ive experienced that
firsthand... And I hope it never happens to Elecraft!

Lucky are those companies with customer-evangelists. Treat them well, and
they insure continued success.

Because there simply is no better marketing that customer-word-of-mouth.
You cannot buy that at any price with any technology, no matter how good the
product is.

Actually, Cookie, if you read Steve Jobs' biography, you will find he's
quite adamant about Apple's core competency. It is *their* hardware,
*their* software, the integration between the two, and, most
importantly, the whole end-user experience using and interacting with
that hardware and software.

Hi Wayne, Eric & all,

before ordering a K3/0 I would like to take a look into the manuals, i.e.

what connections are needed. Haven't found it on the website yet - any time

I disagree...Apple has gone far beyond where it could have with only cult
followers.

Apple's advantage is in its broad vision of an ecosystem encompassing all of
their products including content. iPod + iTunes, iPhone + iTunes + App
Store, iPad + iTunes + App Store + iCloud. iPod + iPhone + iPad all sharing
some human interfaces consistently focused on ease of use, which makes it
easy for customers to migrate to new products. Hardware, software and
content are synergistic across all products, making it difficult for a
competitor to break into their system even with a better component.

five years *after* Apple has managed to drive all of the other

[Elecraft] K1 For Sale

2012-02-26 Thread elecraft
This K1 is a GREAT radio.
I'm always impressed by it when I've taken it out camping, or on field day,
or when I'm at home. The ATU matches just about anything you can put in the
trees! This is a 2-band version (70Khz band spread - can be changed to
150Khz) (20 and 40 mtrs installed) with an extra KFL1-2 Two-Band board (for
15 and 30 mtrs). It has the KAT1 Internal Automatic Antenna Tuner (ATU),
KBT1 Internal Battery Adapter, KNB1 Noise Blanker, KTS1 Wide-Range Tilt
Stand and the FDIMP FingerDimple. I also have the K1BKLTKIT K1 Back light
kit but it's not yet built and installed. The power cord has Anderson power
poles. The original manual is also included.
I also have the original speaker/case top that was replaced when the KBT1
internal battery adapter was installed.
This radio is in excellent physical shape and operates as good as it looks.
I'd like to get $490 plus shipping (est $23 w/ins)
Current price list for all this is $676.60.
Only selling to so I can buy a KX3.
