I have the 100W ampli in mine, I added also the general coverage bandpass filter (for those rare times that I want to listen to some volmet or similar). The KXV3A is an obligatory step if you want to give yourself the P3, or even just to add the PR6 if you like the 6m band. [Elecraft] Preparing for HamRadio fair in Friedrichshafen, Germany
Hi guys, I'm in the process of preparing myself (psychologically and economically HI) for the next HamRadio fair in Friedrichshafen, Germany. I was wondering if Elecraft will be there (I think and hope so, of course) and if some good Elecraft stuff will be on sale there. It would be a nice way to have some precious Elecraft stuff and add-ons for us on this side of the pond without paying the expensive postal rates from USA to EU. Anyone can shed some light on this? Maybe Eric and/or someone in the Elecraft staff? Thank you very much CU in FN! *He didn't say what he had but if not installed already I would order the DVR. Calling CQ is never easier, contesting is easier with the DVR to do the calling. You can record incoming audio for review..you can even play recorded audio back to the station but I find this pretty useless unless you set you EQ Tx/Rx to flat and therefore I am not a user of this feature but others have a different view of course. I use mine daily and wouldn't be without it. * On 23 May 2012 17:55, Pierfrancesco Caci p...@tippete.net wrote: Wayne == Wayne aa...@suddenlink.net writes: Wayne I have a K3 and it is time to upgrade it, I do not need Wayne anymore filters Wayne so what is the best step for here it was a bare bones when I Wayne got it and Wayne I added the tuner and filters that is all. Re: [Elecraft] I am so over the KX3 list for shipping
Several years ago, Marsha and I drove up to Rochester, MN for the W0DXCC convention - it's essentially a big mix of both DX and contesting info, but well put together - it was fun. While there, we attended a pseudo-forum that eventually derailed itself into a bitch session about the 9000. There were a couple of factory reps from Yaesu and they took it on the chin! Re: [Elecraft] K2 and the Kio2
Steve, Get yourself an adapter. Caution, some adapters do not like to work well at the slow 4800 bps rate that the K2 uses. If you have a desktop, I would recommend you use a serial card rather than an adapter, but if you have a laptop, you may have no choice. Those with an FTDI chipset are usually OK, and I know the Edgeport adapters are good. You MUST use the special serial cable to prevent damage to your K2. The cable does not have to be built full length, so if you want, you can make it short - but it does have to be in place - the connector is marked AUX IO - respect that, if it were a full RS-232 port connector, it would have been marked RS-232. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/23/2012 8:01 AM, Stephen Roberts wrote: I'm going to be installing a KIO2 interface into my K2 shortly, but have a basic question. Re: [Elecraft] Starting values for AGC with MCU 4.51 ???
Have you tried these settings? It's easy to do with a signal generator. You might not like them. From what I can tell your settings kick in the AGC at S9. At that point you have about 54db of audio change from weakest to strongest. It then goes up from there. How much depends upon how Elecraft has warped the slope so your ears don't get blown up. The AF limiter will probably kick in often and produce a horrible sounding signal to save your ears. The strategy to fiddle with AF/RF controls to keep AF levels acceptable always seemed an added chore that the radio should be doing. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 5/23/2012 00:31, Dave Hachadorian wrote: I'll be in the WPX CW this weekend, using the rare prefix call sign KZ7X. My idea behind those settings is to keep dynamic range as high as possible before agc even begins to actuate. If agc compression becomes a big issue, I will try turning agc off, and setting rf and af gain to keep signals in the range where they need to be (weak signals readable, and loud signals below the AF Limiter). I have a new sensitive headphone setup, and new sound deadening in the amplifier that may help in this regard. Hi Stan, I found the OQRS button just below the log search results. If you are a Clublog user you can have the date and time fields of the QSOs filled in automatically just by logging in the system. Then you are redirected to the Paypal site where you can pay for the direct qsl (if you decide so). I hope this information are useful. Re: [Elecraft] Starting values for AGC with MCU 4.51 ???
Dave has eardrums made of neoprene. He does an audio headset version of bungee jumping off a bridge. But I should talk. For some time at NY4A, I would operate an MP with the AGC off, using the limiting of its rather limited DSP to limit the pain, so I could hear the 40m DL/OK QRP basement wet noodle antenna crowd down amongst all the IMD generated stuff that we thought was band noise until the K3 came out. Then AGC worked again. Now AGC works even better. I've gotten so spoiled... I may never run a contest with AGC off again. I may lose my charter membership in the I-can-listen-to-anything-at-any-volume-and-show-no-sign-of-pain Club I earned in the '50's handling traffic on 80 meters in the summer time using an old National that only had AGC for AM signals. 73, Guy. On Wed, May 23, 2012 at 8:40 AM, Brian Alsop als...@nc.rr.com wrote: Have you tried these settings? Re: [Elecraft] Starting values for AGC with MCU 4.51 ???
Mine is currently set at AGC THR 15 and SLP 15 (for CW). I'm still playing with SLP, tending to set it higher. The reason for these settings is I want to be able to hear variation in signal level up to about s-8/9, but not much above that. These settings do require occasional adjustment of the AF GAIN between the strongest and weakest signals, but not much. It depends on one's own comfortable hearing range (plus headphones, speaker acoustics, resonances, perceived amplitude of different CW tones, etc.) But I don't get the point of THR 20 SLP 0. I assume that is pretty much the same as just turning off the AGC. Prior to the recent extension of the THL adjustment I would often turn the AGC off and live with distortion at AF LIM = 20. (I also worried about the AF amplifier stages which someone claimed could be subject to damage when the AGC was off.) I think the K3 sounds a lot better since the latest improvements. But that may be a subjective judgement on my part, or due to propagation, etc. But it sure sounds great to me... 73, Drew AF2Z On Wed, 23 May 2012 12:40:01 +, Brian/K3KO wrote: Have you tried these settings? Re: [Elecraft] cables for digital/dayton
Nope is my answer. I got several of those iPhone and video cables from different vendors and they are all whacky. so I am guessing that all the video/audio cables with the TRRS connector are wired the same way. Could not find a single cable with sleeve as ground for the three cables that connect to tip and the two rings. I have yet to find what I think is a nice right angle 3.5 mm TRRS plug. did get several with a clip on plastic cover that will not stay straight. Also on my SignaLink I put in a small DPDT switch that I used to turn on or off the PTT ( and for switching between 1200 and 9600 bps packet lines) so just put that in the PTT circuit and turned it off. On my simply interface I just did not connect the two PTT lines and use the USB to KX3 cable to control the KX3 via CAT. 73, tom n4zpt On 5/23/2012 6:39 AM, Robert Galambos wrote: Bob This is forwarded to the list as it was only sent to me, and I do not have an answer. [Elecraft] FM?
I use my K3/100 mostly for CW and a bit of SSB. I've done some digi as well a couple of times and may eventually do more. I was wondering about the utility of an FM filter. I realize it can be useful for SWL AM and I have the general coverage filters to do so. I'm completely unfamiliar with HF FM however. I live in Northern Baltimore County in MD and wonder if there is any FM activity on 6m or 10m. I'm assuming that FM isn't a DX mode. Re: [Elecraft] Starting values for AGC with MCU 4.51 ???
I don't get the point of THR 20 SLP 0. I assume that is pretty much the same as just turning off the AGC. That is correct for low to moderate signal levels. At high signal levels, a pretty aggressive agc flattening kicks in, even at slp=0. This flattening is more comfortable to deal with than the raucous-sounding AF Limiter, which operates only with AGC turned off. Re: [Elecraft] Best add on for K3
Wayne AA5JJ, asked about favorite K3 add ons. My personal favorite added after initial purchase was/is the KDVR3 Digital Voice Keyer. It's the cat's meow if you are a phone contester. Messages can be activated by macros from your logging software and the best part is you eliminate the audio cable from the computer and also have zero concern about matching the message audio with the live mic audio. I know many who need more than four messages (the KDVR3 limit) and/or who spend a lot of time tweaking their computer-stored messages and I know that works to their benefit, but for KISS crowd (that includes me) I think the KDVR is great. It sounded like you meant internal add-ons, but if you include external equipment, the P3 has to be the first choice, IMHO. 73, Barry K6RM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 - Fix for older RemoteRig boxes
In case anyone is trying to use an older (pre March/11/2011) RemoteRig RRC system with their new K3/0 like I am, you will find that the remote K3 powers up upon simply plugging in the I/O cable which is connected to the ACC plug on the remote K3 whether you want it on or not. You are also not able to turn the rig off remotely. Mike, SM2O, from RemoteRig found that this is fixed by removing D10 in the RADIO RRC. A picture and full thread can be found at http://www.remoterig.com/forum/index.php?topic=1346.0 You may need to register in the RemoteRig forum to see it. I hope this saves someone the hours of head scratching and double-checking it cost me. ;-) Once RemoteRig figured this out, my system works like a champ. If you buy a new RRC from Elecraft or RemoteRig you will not have a problem but I've been playing with this idea for a couple of years and actually have a couple of the RRC systems in hand to hopefully implement a full SO2R system one day. Re: [Elecraft] K3 remote keypad option
Folks, Ive posted info for this idea before. Somebody aught to try it (I dont have time and cant use it, or else I would...) The K3 has a RS232 input for radio command. It has a macro language that uses plain english command syntax that is very flexible. You can write macros to do almost anything. What you need is a terminal emulator with some code memory to do the dirtywork of sending the commands and inserting the frequencies from a keypad to the radio. This device does that: http://www.genovation.com/900.htm I use these at work in our museum applications. They work just fine and are quite rugged. Once you create the program and download it to the pad's EEPROM memory, you dont need the computer anymore. Ive not tried this particular one on my K3, as I use a PS2 version with N1MM to send macro commands with a single button push, but some of you more enterprising folks out there that have a much better grasp of the macro language could probably make this tool do exactly what you want. That way, we can reduce the engineering overhead to Elecraft so that they can concentrate on radio functionality. For my operating, I dont need it... I simply type the frequency into N1MM's (or Logger32's) entry window and Im where I want to be. You guys used to using Icoms with the silly red and white numbers on the key pad that always confused the hell out of me when changing bands would love this thing. -lu-w4lt- K3 #3192 Message: 12 Date: Wed, 23 May 2012 08:32:51 -0400 From: Bill b...@w2blc.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 remote keypad option To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 4fbcd8f3.2000...@w2blc.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed I think the idea is to get away from HRD and other complex software. [Elecraft] Pasternack
I second Chuck's recommendation. I have had many Pasternack RG-213 N-connector patch cables operating at various power levels up to a kilowatt for years without any failures. Yes, they are expensive, but much less so if from the cost you subtract the quality cable, connectors and ANY reasonable amount of labor cost you would put into making your own. This being said, I make my own cables up for ham purposes, but my day job is broadcast engineering, and I have used Pasternack cables and adapters in that job for years with ZERO failures, plus, they have a great catalog and website, ship on schedule and you can rely on them. Also, they have an adapter from anything to anything...I think they even have a Reverse female SMA to 1/4 NPT adapter...jk of course...hi hi! Re: [Elecraft] Starting values for AGC with MCU 4.51 ???
At THR=20, the SLP is irrelevant. All SLP values result in the same effect, approximately SLP=15. At higher THR settings, the SLP is flattened to protect your ears, and at the maximum THR=20 the SLP is horizontal, i.e., SLP=15, regardless of what value used for SLP. Only by turning off AGC will the K3 AGC function go as high as the hardware AGC. Ed W0YK Dave, K6LL, wrote: I'll be in the WPX CW this weekend, using the rare prefix call sign KZ7X. Re: [Elecraft] Starting values for AGC with MCU 4.51 ???
The full range of SLP values only applies at the lower THR values. With THR8, the lower SLP values are not effective. That is, for THR8 there is a SLP value below which the AGC curve does not change (become steeper). At THR=15, SLP values 0-7 all result in about the same effect as SLP=7. At THR=20, the AGC curve is essentially the SLP=15 curve for all values of SLP from 0-15. The SLP=0 curve is only 1-2 dB higher than SLP=15 at S9+40dB. THR=20 is very different than AGC=OFF. With AGC=OFF, the always-on hardware AGC allows audio levels 20+ dB higher than the least aggressive DSP AGC (THR=20, SLP=0). That's why the AF LIMiter function is available ... to protect the user's ears. Ed W0YK Drew AF2Z wrote: I don't get the point of THR 20 SLP 0. I assume that is pretty much the same as just turning off the AGC. Dave K6LL wrote: That is correct for low to moderate signal levels. Re: [Elecraft] Best add on for K3
It is as Wayne said, many like me that chase DX AND contest besides general operating, find that, after using the 2nd receiver along with the P3, would be lost without them. Seriously, the K3 is the first transceiver I've owned that had an auxiliary receiver installed that was identical to the main one. The only drawback in my setup is that I have to use the same antenna for both receivers and have to put up with a 3db reduction in signal strength due to the internal splitter. This can be a bit of a problem when trying to hear a weak DX station come back to you on the main while using the sub RX to find out just where he is listening in the pileups. (Especially with all the UP cops QRM'ing the frequency.) Unlike some of the big gun stations, I don't have the real estate to put up a useful second antenna dedicated to the sub receiver, so I have to live with the 3db degradation of signal when it's on. Small price to pay for the versatility. Jim - W0EB Interesting recon. Of course many end up with both. Thanks Tom, On my simply interface I just did not connect the two PTT lines and use the USB to KX3 cable to control the KX3 via CAT. That sounds like good advice and therefore I will leave it disconnected as well, as I certainly will be using the CAT cable at the same time anyway. I also agree with the original post that the 2nd receiver compounds the problem ... the 2nd receiver is very well shielded (the main is not) and has almost no birdies, but my own experiments with cable routing showed that the 2nd receiver contributes to coupling of signals inside the rig. The SIG RMV menu function added by Elecraft totally cured that problem for me and I now have no operating complaints at all, but SIG RMV doesn't make the birdies go away ... it just shifts each of them out of the normal receive passband. I'm not surprised that they would still show up on a wideband spectrum display of the main receiver. If you want to check, take the top off the K3 and move some cables around (the small coax ones leading to the front panel) while watching the P3. Now let's say you're tuning through the pile, looking for the guy he's working -- where is he? Hard to find him because the pile is so wide. This is where a bandscope is valuable. The wider the pile, the more potential value the bandscope offers. Sometimes you can spot the guy right away, get the subreceiver on him, and hear him, and boom! The scope can be invaluable when the pile is very wide and you are tuning and tuning but never finding the station who is working the DX. However, the bandscope alone will not do this job; you gotta hear what's going on. You can't tell just from looking at the pips who is doing what. So the second receiver is a must. OTOH, in a contest you can tune through the pile with the RIT, because everybody is packed together. Then the bandscope is more valuable, especially for search pounce, because you can just cruise along the band spotting signals and picking 'em off. Receiver #2 doesn't necessarily add anything that you can't get with RIT. Re: [Elecraft] K3, CW, Laptops
Hi, First you have to know what port your PC is using to talk to the K3. In my case it is COM4 (I have an Edgeport usb converter too.) The easy way to find this out is to run the K3 Utility. It will find the correct port. On the K3, go to the Config menu PTT-Key and choose OFF (if not using PTT) and dtr. Your display should show OFF-dtr. This will make the K3 respond to N1MM's DTR keying signal. In N1MM, you open the Config-Ports (etc) and then set up Com4 to be Elecraft K3. Click Set and set the speed to be the same as your K3 (probably 38400, it's in the Config Menu:RS232). Choose DTR (pin 4) to be CW and RTS Always On (or PTT if you are going to use that.) Check the CW/Other box. Exit Config and hit the F1 key and you should be sending your N1MM CQ message. Have fun. Re: [Elecraft] KX3: Source for quality 3.5mm 4 conductor-TRRS Plug
I ordered my KX3 plugs from DigiKey and the were here VERY fast! I am waiting for the arrival of my KX3 before I actually make the cables, though. I will have to experiment a bit to see what I need to do to run digital modes with the KX3...I am hoping I might be able to get by just attenuating the LINE OUT from the computer but I don't know if that will give me enough isolation to the KX3 MIC IN or not. Re: [Elecraft] Mystery interference on showing up on P3
Occasionally I get the signal shown to the right of the one you are swhowing about. The wide low level one. During my investigation I found: 1 - it moves down in frequency ever so slowly like the one you pointed out. 2 - moving the VFO does not change the position of the noise - internal? 3 - reach back and approach the IF signal coax between the K3 P3 causes it to go away and not come back 4 - changed out the coax still happens - occasinally It is wide band and I don't hear any noise when it crosses the VFO frequency. But reaching back in the proximity of the linking coax causes it to go away. Turning PC and other gear off has no effect. What is it? How do I stop it from occuring? 73, Bob - W6OPO -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Mystery-interference-on-showing-up-on-P3-tp7556093p7556461.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KX3 Order Number Decoding
I have not figured out the decoding process for the KX3 as they are being posted on the Elecraft website. I ordered the KX3 on 12/28/11 at 11:44AM EDT. I received the confirmation order number 2208-4844-0913. I can't decode how that correlates to the numbers being posted on the website other than a smaller number is earlier. KX3-F 2208-4685-4272 KX3-K 2208-4068-6852 I revised my order to go with the factory version on Jan. 18th, long before any KX3s were shipped. I'm wondering how that factors in? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Order Number Decoding
Turns out there is a way to decode the confirmation number. W7CF figured it out. See below. 73, Eric --- www.elecraft.com Original Message Subject: RE: [KX3] Re: Shipping status page updated Date: Tue, 22 May 2012 21:48:39 + From: w7cf.da...@gmail.com da...@davidjenni.com For those who haven't noticed, the confirmation number does indeed encode the date time when the confirmation was issued. I plugged some confirmation numbers into a excel worksheet and started to play with it. Yeah, out of desperation while I wait for my KX3, I started to pattern match... :-) The first 8 numbers encode the days minutes of the confirmation, and in good Unix tradition the zero order time is 1/1/1970 To convert, use the following formula (interesting how identical Excel and googleDocs formulas are...): =( VALUE(LEFT(B1,4))*1 + VALUE(MID(B1,6,4)) ) / (60*24) + 25569 For the curious, 25569 is the number of days between 1/1/1970 and 1/1/1900, the latter is the zero date for Excel. Place confirmation numbers into a spreadsheet, e.g. into column B and add the following formula to the next column C. Now format the column C Date time and you'd get the readout below. A B C factory: 2208-4637-9147 12/28/2011 13:17:00 kits: 2208-4064-4730 12/28/2011 3:44:00 Confirmation numbers are from today's (5/22) status page update, column C shows the actual order times calculated with above formula. 73, Dave W7CF On 5/23/2012 4:54 PM, Dave Agsten wrote: I have not figured out the decoding process for the KX3 as they are being posted on the Elecraft website. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Order Number Decoding
*Yep! it's easy! the number was generated by an 'off site' or 3rd. party order taking facility and NOT generated by Elecraft. As this 3rd party handles orders for 'other' clients, the numerical significance is only in relation to 'all' of the orders received by this 3rd party. See?..simple eh? Actually I read a previous post describing how the order numbers were generated..:-) Hope this clarifies things for you. 73's Gary * On 24 May 2012 09:54, Dave Agsten w4...@yahoo.com wrote: I have not figured out the decoding process for the KX3 as they are being posted on the Elecraft website. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Order Number Decoding
Took the info from the formula. My order number is: 2208-4835-5827 Using the formula I get: 12/28/2011 4:35 PM Since the order info came *from* Elecraft, may I assume the 4:35 PM is Pacific Standard Time? If so, then I think the conversion to UTC would be 12/29/2011 0035. Did I do that correctly? Now I gotta find that spreadsheet and put my number in. Hope I don't bump too many people in the wrong direction!
