[Elecraft] KX3: use at 500-KHz
I just tried reception on the am BC band and 500-KHz but the receiver seems deaf there. There was mention of using the suto-tuner to improve reception below the BC band, but how is this accomplished? Re: [Elecraft] Using KX3 with MFJ-1899T
I have ordered a MFJ-1899T and had similar concerns about the potential weight on the connector. I went with a MFJ-332B mag base with BNC connector. When traveling on business, I will usually have a rental car. This will let me use the car as a base for the antenna. I was trying to find a compact solutions as possible to take with me. May eventually try the single band antennas, I have only found the MFJ versions. Seems the Maldol ones arent made anymore. I don't like mounting the whips directly to the radio with a right angle adapter . not sure if the antenna is holding the radio or vice versa, but the weight does seem to put a significant load on the rig's bnc connector. so I made a little bnc base out of scrap aluminum, and use it portable when it's not convenient or practical to string up a random wire. the setup works, but not as well as random wires, so it's a backup system at best. Re: [Elecraft] KAT3 problem
Barry, I had the same thing here a few weeks ago. I found that I had no output from my LPA board. It is now at Elecraft being serviced but I have yet to hear the final resolution. It has only been in service for a week or so. I used a scope and did some signal tracing and found that I had RF on the input of the LPA board and a logical HI on the 7T line. But I had no output from the LPA itself. I worked with support and we determined that something was probably wrong with the board itself. I removed it and sent it in. [Elecraft] KX3 Receive Performance Below 1500 kHz
A discussion of KX3 MF lack of sensitivity recently took place on the KX3 list. The KX3 should not be considered really usable below about 1500 kHz, as Wayne explsined: Original Message (from KX3 list) I thought there was some advantage to AM BCB reception to be had with the KXAT3. If a KXAT3 is installed, harmonic images are attenuated, but this has little effect on signal strength. Why wouldn't the T/R PIN diodes be as well protected by high pass filtering that rolled off below 400 kHz rather than 1500 kHz The carrier lifetime of the diodes is roughly 1.5 microseconds. This means that strong signals at the low end of the broadcast band could cause IMD (IP2) if not attenuated. The HPF provides about 20-30 dB of rolloff by this frequency, ensuring that this isn't a problem. The KX3 is optimized for ham-band use so this is entirely appropriate. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Receive Performance Below 1500 kHz
Mike, My explanation stands, but not really usable isn't a fair assessment. I frequently use the KX3 in the BC band. I can clearly copy all the same stations with the KX3 that I can hear using other AM- capable radios at my QTH. The KX3's receive sensitivity does fall off by design below about 1.5 MHz (as described below), but in many cases you don't need a lot of sensitivity here due to high atmospheric noise. The exception, of course, is if you're a serious BC-band SWL. In that case you might want to consider a simple broadcast-band receiving converter using an IF of say 7 MHz. The KX3 provides up to 9 built-in transverter bands, one of which could be programmed for this purpose so the VFO would still display the actual target frequencies. 73, Wayne N6KR On Jul 7, 2012, at 6:15 AM, Mike Morrow wrote: A discussion of KX3 MF lack of sensitivity recently took place on the KX3 list. Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: Am I missing something?
No, the recommendation is to use the K3 Utility for production firmware, no browser is normally required. If you're accessing beta firmware, any browser or FTP client is fine. Microsoft provides FTP client functionality, incorporated in WININET.dll, that both the K3 Uility and Internet Explorer use. I don't know what other browsers use. I have nothing against other browsers, I use them myself. The Wininet core is available on every Windows system, part of the Windows programming interface commonly used, which makes it the preferable FTP client library. If the Wininet cache is stale (older views of the data are cached locally) the stale data needs to be discarded so that it is fetched again from Elecraft,s FTP server. One way is to discard the entire cache with the Control Panel Internet applet. Another way is to use IE to browse to the FTP site and refresh that one page. But I think Paul's issue was a need to select the Copy New Files From Elecraft button on the K3 Utility Firmware page. 73 de Dick, K6KR On Jul 7, 2012, at 7:23 AM, Rick Johnson w3bi.r...@hotmail.com wrote: Should I glean from this statement: Use Internet Explorer (not another browser that may not use Wininet) that IE is the recommended browser to use when updating K3 F/W? 73, Rick W3BI From: die...@comcast.net Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2012 07:14:23 -0700 To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net; p...@nf8j.com Subject: [Elecraft] Fwd: Am I missing something? Re: [Elecraft] Stuck in MCU LD
Problem solved! But, after trying everything written about Firmware updating, plus trying suggestions by Iain, N6Ml and Don, W3FPR, worked until this morning. My testing included disconnecting, things from the K3, changing USB/Com cables and various lengths of no power periods from seconds in length to 2 hours. I went to bed. This morning I tried doing the upgrade in the last configuration I had last night, It worked perfectly. So I moved to my other K3. Now I started this update in the configuration that I start all my upgrades, including the one that failed. IT RAN FLAWLESSLY FIRST TIME!!! Who can figure!! Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 - low power 15m only
OK, here is what I can see so far... I visually examined the low pass filter components on the KPA100, between K9 and K10, nothing seems out of the ordinary, nothing cracked, broken, or burned that I can see. I'm not quite ready to remove the PCA and the power transistors from the heatsink yet. Measurements: no change. 50 Ohm load, tune mode. Power output on 15m tracks linearly with the power control, up to about 50W, and then it peaks, even if the knob is turned up further. The DC current draw is about normal for 50W, around 10A, similar to the other bands. The current never goes any higher as the power control is turned up. On the other bands, power goes up to full as the power control is turned up. Any other suggestions before I disassemble it any further? -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-100-low-power-15m-only-tp7558733p7558791.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Firmware upgrades using Ubuntu 12.04
I had trouble getting the KX3 Utility program to communicate with the radio in Ubuntu. Here's what solved the problem for me. I take no credit for figuring this out, these were postings by others that I found in three different places. I decided to collect the details here so they'd be all in one spot. Hope this helps someone. The FTDI drivers for the USB cable provided by Elecraft are a native part of Ubuntu 12.04 and do not need to be re-installed. Just plug the cable into a USB port. I found these two additional steps are necessary before the Utility program will successfully operate: (Run in a terminal) sudo chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB0 sudo apt-get install curl The first command is necessary to permit all users of the computer to access the serial port ttyUSB0. Note: the last character in USB0 is a zero. Without this command you will get an error message telling you that the KX3 Utility program can't communicate with the port. The second command installs the Linux function curl which enables Ubuntu to automatically communicate with and download from the Elecraft (and anyone else's) FTP server. Note: the last character in curl is the letter L in lower-case. Without this command you will get an error message stating the KX3 Utility program is unable to connect to the Elecraft FTP server. Once I did the above the Utility program ran smoothly and the firmware update and other functions all appear to work. Re: [Elecraft] LiFePO4 battery packs
According to the product descriptions, both of these battery packs have a balancing board built into them. The documentation for the board shows that the board has independent connections to each cell. It protects each cell from over charge, over discharge, high current discharge, and short circuit. Thus, you gain the benefit of balance charging while only having to purchase a lower cost charger, such as the ones suggested for these packs on their product pages. The larger of these two packs appears to be very cost effective and a great solution for external power for a KX3, K2/10, K3/10 or other QRP rig. A123 branded cells are more expensive, although EP Buddy has them at a very favorable price. Their packs do not have internal circuitry, however, requiring purchase of a balancing charger if you want to recharge at higher rates. See recent KX3 batteries thread on this reflector for discussion. 72/73 de JP WF4Z On Sat, Jul 7, 2012 at 12:59 PM, Fred Jensen k6...@foothill.net wrote: On 7/6/2012 7:06 PM, Steve Jackson wrote: So, what is the opinion of the learned and experienced regarding these battery packs? For example, say you want the PF2 key to toggle between setting VFO A to 14010 and 14020 (not useful but just an example). Use the Utility to create the two macros like this: MACRO1 FA0001401;MN110;SWT12;SWH47;SWT14; MACRO2 FA0001402;MN110;SWT11;SWH47;SWT14; Send the Macros to the K3 then, on the K3, go to CONFIG:MACRO X, tap 1 and then hold PF2. Tap MENU to get out of CONFIG. Now MACRO1 is assigned to PF2. When you Hold PF2 the macro changes the frequency and then assigns MACRO2 to PF2. The next operation of PF2 sets a different frequency and sets PF2 back to MACRO1. Substitute whatever you want to toggle between for the FA commands. Put the two macros in whatever slots you have open and change the SWT11/12 taps to match. Change SWH47 to match the PF/M button you want to use. You could also expand on this to rotate among 3 or more macros. I expect others can add to this and again, I claim no originality for this idea. [Elecraft] Firmware upgrades using Ubuntu 12.04
Yes the permissions catch a few out. I never realised K3Util Linux ran a curl script to get the firmware, that's interesting. Of course you could run it in terminal knowing the ftp path etc. Most Ubuntu users just need to join the dialout group rather than chmod the dev. This right is gained by adding the user to the dialout group. The dialout group owns the /dev/ttyS* devices and can read the /etc/wvdial.conf file In a default Desktop installation, the first user on the system is considered an administrator, and as of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is a member of the following groups: adm, dialout, cdrom, plugdev, lpadmin, admin, sambashare So as a new Ubuntu user it is worth checking which groups you are a member of. Run below command in terminal to add dialout. Sudo addgroup yourusername dialout Or usermod -a -G dialout yourusername Or GUI; The Users Administration Tool allows you add, delete and modify the existing users and groups in your system. To start From gui menu; Click on System Administration Users and Group You can also start tool from command line / terminal: users-admin I am very naughty here and run as root all the time now in fedora 17 (started on centOS 5 and fedora 10), so permissions are not an issue. Have been doing that for 6 years and yet to have an issue. [Elecraft] K3 sometimes forgets set power level?
I see a similar problem here when using the band change buttons on the KPA500 -- with KPA500 BAND CHG set to STBY and K3 PWR SET set to PER BAND. The K3 STBY power level for a band A appears to be overwritten with the OPER power level when the KPA500 is in OPER mode and I shift to another band B, causing the KPA500 to change from OPER to STBY. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Macro toggle
Hmm, further investigation shows this isn't the whole story. Recording a CW or voice message to an Mx key does clear its MxT and MxH macro assignments, but if I assign a new macro to either MxT or MxH (but not both), that macro will then operate for both MxTap and MxHold. This oddity doesn't prevent assigning another macro to the unintended Tap or Hold, but it does seem buggish. I guess if you really want the unused key function to do nothing you could assign an empty macro to it. Re: [Elecraft] Firmware upgrades using Ubuntu 12.04
Well there you go, Matt. I am unfamiliar with those. I am such an MS person. I don't use manual commands other than MS, so this doesn't help me. I use the GUI which is just clicks and I don't do much command line as I don't have to load up the getting older can't remember all this stuff, type of activity. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: Matt Zilmer [mailto:mzil...@verizon.net] Sent: Saturday, July 07, 2012 4:45 PM To: Bill K9YEQ Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Firmware upgrades using Ubuntu 12.04 Hi Bill, These are just csh or bash commands, not programming. 73, matt On Sat, 07 Jul 2012 16:10:18 -0500, you wrote: Perhaps I missed it, but I am thinking we would rather have a simple GUI with easier commands? [Elecraft] Using KX3 with MFJ-1899T
With my KX-3, KX-1, and K-1, I have used the MFJ-1899T attached to the Alpha-Delta mini-tripod made for the Outback Joey antenna. Attached to it is a 35 ft #24 stealth wire counterpoise with markings for the various lengths needed for 40-10 meters allowing me to unwind off the spool to the proper length depending on band in use. It works well when a better antenna such as an EFHW can not be deployed, e.g., in a hotel room. One note of caution, the settings contained in the instructions for the 1899-T that come with the antenna are not accurate and one has to recalibrate, and, here, the use of an antenna analyzer is very helpful. However, the settings contained on the instructions posted on the MFJ web site are fairly close as are the counterpoise lengths. Bob McCuskey W7BV Re: [Elecraft] Using KX3 with MFJ-1899T Ronald Nutter Sat, 07 Jul 2012 04:22:53 -0700 I have ordered a MFJ-1899T and had similar concerns about the potential weight on the connector. Re: [Elecraft] Firmware upgrades using Ubuntu 12.04
The super decoder ring you seek is the Linux man command. For example: man sudo man chmod man apt-get This will explain what the commands and their various options do. 73, Matt VK2ACL On 08/07/2012, at 12:56 AM, Brian Alsop als...@nc.rr.com wrote: I hope all versions of Ubuntu come with a super decoder ring so that mortals can make sense of these obviously encrypted commands. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 7/7/2012 16:51, KC6D wrote: I had trouble getting the KX3 Utility program to communicate with the radio in Ubuntu. Re: [Elecraft] Firmware upgrades using Ubuntu 12.04
Or stick my head in the fire also. Not quite that gullible ;) Fedora 17 looks v-good, The latest linux is much more GUI orientated and user friendly than years ago. Everyone seems to pick up Ubuntu, but the latest fedora is very good. CLI knowledge is very beneficial, also with windows. When your PC system goes down, that knowledge can save you. The worst thing about windows is the virus and malware attacks. I use Microsoft Security Essentials (free) and find it very good rather than paying virus upgrade subscriptions for systems that tend to slow down PC performance. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows/products/security-essentials I also use windows 7 and xp on the laptop as well. You don't see many companies support the range of OS available like Elecraft do. Maybe getting OT this thread, but hey we all use computers now in ham radio even if occasionally.
