Re: [Elecraft] FW: K3 no power out on DATA
The "primary" of the Line In isolation transformer is *floating* - there is no connection to "ground" other than through the small value (1000 pF) RF bypass capacitors. If *either* L4 or L5 is open, you will get no audio via Line In and if you do, there is a *serious* wiring error external to the K3 (and potentially inside the K3). Been there, done that, pulled out too much hair trying to find the problem. Since Line In is transformer isolated, the RF chokes seem to be a bit "overkill" ... Line In certainly showed no ill effects when both were replaced by jumpers on an emergency basis. By the way, I question the use of a 604 Ohm series resistor in the Line In. The 604 Ohm resistors were replaced by 51 Ohm resistors in Line Out to reduce IMD - one would think the same considerations would be applicable at Line In. 73, ... The mic input is a very low level, and the line input is about 10 times as great. Most interfaces have a jumper setting that will allow either mic level or line level input. Al, I would start with the Calibration Reference Oscillator Calibration as indicated in the manual (use Method 2). After doing that, the K3 ref osc calibration should be correct, and all other discrepancies should be with the P3. [Elecraft] [P3] Adjusting Center Freq in Narrow Span
Something that I've not been able to do successfully: Tune to a standard frequency station, like WWV on 10 MHz. Center WWV on the P3 screen (in other words, make the Center Freq = 1 kHz exactly). I want to span down from 20 kHz to the minimum span, 2 kHz. NOTE: FixTrack = Fixed-tune mode for the following. As I span down, the center frequency shifts to something like 10002 kHz. So then I try to adjust the center freq back to 1 kHz exactly, but the P3 won't allow it. As you approach 1 suddenly the center frequency jumps back to 10002. It's an aggravation. Maybe it's a function of my FixTrack settings but I haven't been able to understand why. Ya know, I've got the same problem... but I've tried everything (all combinations of Mic and Line-in switch and cable routings). Craig Labs the maker of DeoxIT also has a specific product for gold contacts. Here: http://store.caig.com/ I have not used it so can not comment on it. I do use their S-Shield but my old can is labeled PreservIT. I use that on all coax connectors and have never had a problem with any connector that had it applied. [Elecraft] P3/SVGA AZERTY keyboard ?
I received a K360 logitech wireless keyboard to plug in the P3/SVGA. Everything's fine BUT as a French model this a AZERTY keyboard and the P3/SVGA is waiting for QWERTY one. Not a big deal (need a little bit of training) but I wonder if there is a solution. Maybe in the future others keyboard will be supported. Hi Don, Just wanted to add to my previous post. The strip that Mr. Begali sent me is about 4 inches long and feels like two fabric layers glued together. It is rough to the touch but not what I would call abrasive. In the e-mail that he sent me he advised me to "wet the strip with alcohol and pull it between the contacts". I mentioned in my earlier post that the strip is thick and will require you to open up the spacing in order to use it. My contacts are silver and have been fine ever since the cleaning a little over 2 years ago. If the problem was contact oxidation then perhaps gold would have been a better choice. If it is dust buildup then I think even gold contacts would require cleaning. Gold gets goop from the air on it. Very small particles of cooking grease over a long period of time. Soot from cigarette smoke. Air is not pure just because you can see through it. There is a small charge on the contacts, and one side will attract particle out of the air. This will coat gold the same way, if a lot slower, as stuff on my glasses that needs to be washed off. Re: [Elecraft] 472KHz/500KHz
Did you read in that article how a KXV3 module is used in the K3 to bypass the high pass filtering used to protect the T/R PIN diodes? The KX3 has the same filtering, but no possibility for a KXV3 module. Therefore, the KX3 is not really usable below around 1500kHz. If you want to get onto the 600m band with a KX3, you'll need to look at building a transverter. 73, Matt VK2ACL --- Matt and Dom, I have actually listened below 500-KHz with my KX3 and though lowered sensitivity it still hears at these frequencies. I think it will only require a Rx preamp to restore sensitivity. I have not tried to transmit down there with the KX3, but it is my hope that is will work. I can make a transverter (in fact I have one that I made with a SBL-1 mixer using my station 10-MHz REF OCXO as LO. Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA Tx/Rx Window Sizes
Hi Tom, There are several factors that control the number of Rx and Tx window line counts. The resolution of the display, the height of the waterfall and the font size are the most important settings. Obviously if you're trying to use a large font (fntD=3) and a low resolution (1024x768) with the waterfall height set low, you're going to be limited to the number of lines that can be displayed. Try increasing the height of the waterfall and/or reducing the data font size. [Elecraft] JT65 on the KX3: improved VFO temperature stability
Hi all, The KX3's standard VFO temperature compensation is adequate for nearly all operating modes. However, JT65 and some other narrowband digital modes can benefit from better tracking with temperature, especially on the highest bands. I have a new revision of KX3 field-test firmware available that can meet this requirement. It includes a "custom" VFO temperature compensation feature that accurately matches the temperature/frequency curve to each individual radio. After performing the calibration procedure, long-term (key-down) VFO frequency change can be as low as about +/- 2 Hz on 20 meters. There's a catch, however: You'll need a very stable signal source that can provide an RF carrier on about 50.1 MHz, at a level of S8 to S9+20 dB. A temperature-stabilized or reference-locked signal generator is preferred, although a ham-band transceiver covering 6 meters can be used, assuming it can be keyed for 15 to 20 minutes at low power output without appreciable drift. (One tester successfully used a K3 as the signal source.) The procedure takes about half an hour to complete. I still consider it experimental, but if you're a serious JT65 operator and don't mind putting in the effort, I'll be happy to send you the new firmware and instructions. One other important note to those considering JT65 and other modes where key-down times can be very long: You may need to keep power output level down to 3 watts or lower. (Modes like CW and SSB have a far lower duty cycle and can be used at up to 12 watts.) The maximum sustainable JT65 power level can be determined by experimentation. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

The main thing you need to know is that it's a 3-output tuner, the user interface is going to be pretty much like other Elecraft products, and it's going to be a really nice box. It will, for example, remember antenna settings per band for each output, just like the tuner in the K3. In other words, everything you need to know is in the product description on the website. Over the past few months, I've been reconfiguring my antenna switching to feed my various antennas that way. In my station, I can use a SteppIR on 20-6M, or I can use individual Yagis for 10, 15, and 20, so I put the SteppIR on one output and a selector switch (relays, actually) for the Yagis on another output. I have three antennas for 80 and 40, so they are switched to the three ports, again using relays. Someone with a smaller antenna farm, perhaps a tri-bander, a vertical, and a dipole would simply run one to each output. The primary thing to remember when thinking about switching is that the tuner will remember antennas per band (and even for various parts of a band), so you want to set up your switching so that on any band, a given tuner always sees the same antenna. Another thing you'll need to know, which is in common with virtually all antenna tuners, is that it ALWAYS tunes barefoot, and that it will tune with a QRP signal. The KAT500 includes RCA jacks that blocks the power amp from transmitting when the KAT500 is tuning. The connection is quite simple -- there are two RCA jacks on the back of the KAT500, and you simply run the amplifier keying line from the K3 to the KAT500, and another RCA cable from there to your power amp. Nothing could be simpler. There are some really sharp guys doing the beta testing, and with a wide variety of stations and antenna farms, from the sublime to the ordinary. They've been giving Elecraft some great input, finding things that Elecraft has been fixing, and suggesting features that Elecraft has been busily adding to the software and firmware. Therefore, the KX3 is not really usable below around 1500kHz. It is usable for receive, but not for transmit. The high-pass filter starts rolling things off around 1.3 to 1.5 kHz. Sensitivity is certainly reduced at the low end of the band, but atmospheric noise is generally very high in this band anyway, and in practice the S/N ratio is adequate for casual AM broadcast listening over the entire band. If you're interested in weak-signal AM broadcast work, a transverter would be useful. > If you want to get onto the 600m band with a KX3, you'll need to > look at building a transverter. I did an experiment with 600-meter transceive on the KX3 (around 500 kHz). With the ATU installed, which provides additional filtering for the broadcast band, the transmitter put out about 0.5 to 1.0 watts. But additional low-pass filtering would be required, and as noted above, receiver sensitivity is reduced in this band due to the high- pass filtering. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] problem with Transmitter Gain Calibration
I've had this happen several times after the output power disappeared. It appears to be that the RF ground return to the output connector is completed through the "2D" block at the upper rear of the K3 (as viewed from the front.) If I'm wrong about this I'm sure a response will be forthcoming, but my experience has been that loosening the screw(s) and "scrubbing" the interface to the output board (no ATU in my K3) and retightening will fix the problem. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Keyer Pause
Don, One safe way to clean any set of contacts is to use a strip of paper - copy paper, printer paper, etc, all will do just fine - cut it into narrow strips a couple inches long. Slide the paper strip between the contacts, gently close the contacts and pull the paper through. You will normally see some black stuff on the paper. Continue until the strip comes out clean. In addition, many recommend using DeOxit on the contacts after cleaning. [Elecraft] CLEANING KEY CONTACTS
Don . . . You are correct . . . just a plain sheet of clean paper is all you need. Do NOT use a dollar bill as some will suggest because of the human and leather-wallet oils with which they are contaminated. Close the contacts on the paper until there is slight drag on the paper as you pull it through. If the paper rips, the contacts are too tight. You'll see the dirt on the paper. Continue drawing with another corner of the clean paper until there is no further dirt on the paper. It should go without saying that you must not file the contacts (though you occasionally come across that suggestion, too). 73, Kent K9ZTV On 9/4/2012 8:22 AM, Donald Thompson wrote: > How should I clean the contacts? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Keyer Pause
Hi Bruna, I moved my Leonessa Key from the CW Machine to my new K3 and encountered failures on the dash sometimes. I think that I have confirmed it to be dirty contact on the Leonessa since the K3 works fine with the Elecraft Hex key. I would like specific instructions on how to clean this. I got lots of different suggestions on the reflector but want to make sure I do it correctly and don't damage anything. Can you also confirm that this key gas gold contacts? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Keyer Pause
Some Begali keys used an alloy that caused the contacts to act like a diode, with a constant forward voltage drop. This caused problems with some, but not all, keyers, including my K2 internal keyer and a Logikey. Cleaning and Deoxit did not help in this instance. I ordered replacement gold contacts for my Begali Magnetic Pro (not cheap) which completely solved the problem. I also have a newer Begali model which came with silver contacts and it did not display the problem. I suggest that with modern rigs that have very low currents in the key circuit that you only use silver or gold contacts. Regarding cleaning, I always use a business card and don't overdo it. I apologize, but we -strongly- ask that people do not try to send their own auxbus signals to the K3. This is a critical proprietary timing component of internal K3 operation and improper use will cause serious problems for the K3, including possible damage of internal components during disturbed T/R timing. It's all about wetting current. On a building site machine design I used 30mA of dc and a level detector to sense when the switch had been pushed and they lasted years. A few pA from digital circuits is often not enough to wet precious metal contacts which are open to the ambient. Try cleaning fluid before using a diamond tipped polishing tool. First off I'm pretty sure Elecraft wouldn't mind if we built this. In fact I'm guessing if they had a "cleaned up for publishing" document with the protocol specification, Wayne would post it here. I'm guessing they don't, and it would be a lot of work to get it into a clean, publishable version - and the engineers are quite busy with KX3, KAT500, and other things. >From a legal standpoint, there is nothing wrong with reverse engineering such a protocol and publishing the result, as long as there wasn't any misappropriation of trade secrets (e.g. using an unauthorized, leaked Elecraft document as a starting point). But monitoring the communications on the bus and from there working out the protocol, and implementing your own version, is a perfectly legal thing to do, and is in fact a protected right. The only exception would be DMCA-related, where you are not allowed to reverse engineer a protocol that's specifically designed to protect copyright - many do not like that law one bit, and it does not apply everywhere, but in any case a case like this falls way outside the scope of the DMCA. So it's perfectly legal to do :) 73, Thomas M0TRN On 4 September 2012 15:10, Stewart wrote: > Raises some interesting questions... > > Can a unique protocol be protected ? > > If so, if it is publicised has an offence been committed ? > > If it is used only by an individual and not commercially, has an offence > been committed ? > > 73 > Stewart G3RXQ > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I have an older Begali 'Classic' (non-gold contacts) which has the same problem. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Still having pitch problems with 250HZ filter
Even though it is an 8 pole filter which *theoretically* has zero offset, you may have to apply some filter offset in the filter setup menu. You can just guess, or you can use a broadband noise generator at the antenna input and look at the audio output with an audio spectrum analyzer such as Spectrogram running on a PC to see where the filter passband is placed. The amount by which it is offset from the frequency set in the sidetone pitch menu is the amount of offset that should be entered. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/4/2012 7:34 AM, geo...@gloria.us wrote: > I am still having pitch problems with my 250HZ, 8 pole CW filter. > > Have tried changing the side tone frequency and going into filter setup; > but, the received CW pitch thru the filter is still too high. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Keyer Pause
Hi Don, I would like to echo Lee's comments. After about 2 years of use my Begali paddle became what I can only call sluggish when used with my K3. I contacted Begali and he sent me an abrasive cleaning strip. It differs from the strip that comes with the paddle. This was thicker and required me to open up the contact spacing to use it. After cleaning I never had another problem. That was about 3 years ago. I suppose it's possible that the tiny resistance that might occur with dirty contacts causes problems with the K3 keyer but does not cause problems with the Begali CW machine. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] GPIO input to switch output power with external amplifier on?
Ok, external control box it is then. I suppose a small AVR will do the job, but now to figure out enough of the 1-wire serial protocol to be able to do this.. Does anyone have a KXPA500, a Bus Pirate, and an hour or so? 73, Thomas M0TRN On 4 September 2012 14:12, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: > I don't see how ... the K3 has only two (2) GPIO lines. [Elecraft] {K3} Muffled Audio
Someone recently posted about a delay in the audio sidetone while on SSB. Remember that F/W update 4.22 included a 'Voice Tx Fast Monitor' function: CONFIG: TX MON set to 'FAST' then you don't get the un-nerving delayed audio. This was something I asked for a while back and was subsequently included in an update. Thanks for the answers Joe. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] GPIO input to switch output power with external amplifier on?
I am wondering if anyone knows how the KXPA500 signals its state to the K3. What cable is used to interconnect the two? There might already be a GPIO on the extension connector that enables the alternative power settings on the K3 on a per band basis. Any info? Of course if there isn't wouldn't it be great if Wayne could add it :) 73, Thomas M0TRN On 29 August 2012 01:52, Vic K2VCO wrote: > I also have suggested this. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Keyer Pause
It should not be doing that, and you don't have to use an external keyer to get the best cw of any rig made in the world today. The K3's specialty is cw. But I don't have the answer for you. If someone here doesn't have an answer for you soon call support at the factory. Re: [Elecraft] 472KHz/500KHz
Matt, yes understood, transverter needed...but with KX3 not seen a circuit diagram yet, block diagram yes... wonder why that is still secret squirrel however I wonder if the offer from Wayne for the 160m IF went anywhere. I read that the KX3 is 'deaf' if you go through the normal RX chain at MF so wonder if anyone tried to break out yet. I had hoped to use the KX3 for RX directly. I can see the SDR might be interesting as I use the Softrock at 500KHz on RX with a simple 4MHz crystal oscillator. http://m1kta-qrp.blogspot.co.uk/2008/10/500khz.html I also have used the G3XBM 500KHz transverter with FT817 for 500KHz with 28MHz LO but my FT817 is dead now ;-) BTW I have UK NoV for 500KHz. 72 Dom M1KTA -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/472KHz-500KHz-tp7562101p7562103.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
73, Matt VK2ACL On 04/09/2012, at 6:59 PM, Dominic Baines wrote: > Anyone tried the K3 option with a KX3 on 472/500KHz yet? > > http://www.elecraft.com/TechNotes/k3qtx_v2_pa3cw.pdf > > Will be trying but interested to hear anyone's success/failure stories. > > 72 > > Dom > M1KTA > > > > -- > View this message in context: > http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/472KHz-500KHz-tp7562101.html > Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
