Re: [Elecraft] K3 PSK no output

It occurs to me that you might not be able to transmit on
frequencies much higher than 3KHz or so because of the limits in
the transmit bandwidth with the 2.7KHz filter.

Note that you will need a wider crystal filter than the 2.7KHz

[Elecraft] K3 - Clipperton on 160M with 5 Watts

2013-03-05 Thread Rich - K1HTV
Spent all weekend on 160M at Multi-Multi station W3LPL using my K3 in the
diversity mode in the ARRL Phone DX contest. Despite the poorer than normal
conditions we still managed to work 57 countries. The best 160M DX QSO was with
NH2T on Guam.

I believe that Dave was also using a K3, probably the same one used a year ago
to hear my barefoot K3 on 160M from the home VA QTH. The QSO with Guam was a
new K1HTV DXCC country and the 33rd zone worked on 160 Meters.

On Monday evening while on 160 Meters at home, I pushed the PF2 macro button to
set my K3 to QRP 5 Watts. Within 10 minutes of calling, I managed to break the
Clipperton DXpedition pileup to work TX5K for 160M QRP country #89.

Thank you Elecraft for a great communications tool!

Rich - K1HTV

= = =

The very first QSO with my K3 was TX5K on 6m off the moon. Nice way to
break it in!

I am simply taking the headphone audio output (not the I/Q output) and running
it into Digipan or Fldigi. This radio is just the stock radio with no added

I had not heard of the other demodulation scheme before. I guess I have some
more reading to do.

I will try the Data A mode. Thanks for the feedback, folks.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Low Power Out / Hi Current

2013-03-05 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jeremy,

T4 being off the board should not make any difference. Are you
operating into a dummy load that is 50 ohms pure resistive, or are you
operating into an antenna? The base K2 needs to operate into a 50 ohm
resistive load for good power control and a proper impedance.

If you are operating into an antenna, use your antenna analyzer and
adjust your tuner for a 50 +/- j0 impedance.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Low Power Out / Hi Current

2013-03-05 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jeremy,

The problem of HiCur coupled with low power output is usually associated
with a problem either in T4 or the Low Pass Filter.

Check all the capacitors in the Low Pass Filter for proper values and
count the turns on the toroids. Count only the turns passing through
the center of the core. It is easy to put an extra turn on the toroids,
and the result is a HiCur message along with low power output.

[Elecraft] K3 and transverter output

2013-03-05 Thread Ross Biggar
I have been using my K3 to drive a transverter (with 28mhz input 1296 output).
and using the low power
output to the transverte through the KXV3 option.
All of transmissions have been using digital.
The K3 has worked perfectly.

Having proved I can do EME, I now want to go back and use the K3 for HF digital
and SSB.

However, here is the problem.
I cannot get the K3 to output to the HF antennas. I have gone to Config and
turned XV ON to NO,
but nothing comes out of the HF antenna output.
So what am I missing???

Also I cannot get the rig to work on SSB with a mic, (it works perfectly on
digital)

Help please.

[Elecraft] K2 For Sale

2013-03-05 Thread Ralph
I have a completed K2 for sale. It has all the options except the 100 watt
amp. Includes the battery for the internal battery kit. It was built using
uninstall modules. The radio was never completely aligned so was unused. All
modules have been assembled but not aligned. The kits now would cost over
$1700.00. I would like to sell it for $1400.00. Please contact off-line to
discuss if interested.

Happy Trails to You!

Okay then.  Seventeen band/modes.  Heard them S9 on  a very quiet 160 this
AM but didn't have the extension wires on the dipole.  Now done, we'll see
what happens tomorrow.  Of course if they show up on the other slot I need
(75 SSB) I'm out of luck.

I don't see Wayne's offer as a change to the present configuration instead
he's offering to enhance it by adding a menu item that would allow disabling
this feature, for those who don't want it. Those who do want it would simply
need to enable it once (after the firmware update) then operate as before.

Re: [Elecraft] Newest P3 FW Upgrade (Workaround)

2013-03-05 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Paul,
I got: Error Code 0xE2000202: No response to SVGA boot block sync
command.
SVGA verification failed.

Turned the P3 off and then back on and uploaded all new firmware and all
went well.

I don't know if the SVGA was on or off in either case as I don't have a
monitor connected to the P3. Would it be possible to display the state
of the SVGA when you go into the SVGA en menu? Then tapping the switch
would toggle it. Maybe some of the other SVGA menu controls could
display the current state too (SVGA data, fntD, font, FW, res, WinR and
WinT).

I rarely have a monitor hooked up and I think it makes sense to have the
SVGA disabled.

Cheers and thanks,
Fred KE7X

Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter

2013-03-05 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
The "S" in RST is what S-meters supposedly indicate although many Hams
rightfully feel they do it very poorly, Hi!

A little background:

The RST system was adopted by Hams in the early 1920's when the standard HAM
receiver was a regen. The "S- meter" on a receiver came along with
automatic gain control (AGC) as superhets came into common use in the 1920s.
The AGC varies according to the signal level and controls the gain to
maintain a roughly constant audio output level. It first came into use on
the RCA "Radiola" series A.M. radios that were the "Cadillac" of broadcast
band receivers just as "broadcasting" was starting up. Home listeners were
delighted with a system that kept strong stations from blasting out and that
helped keep the music level constant when there was fading.

The S-meter measures the AGC voltage and became a popular addition to Ham
receivers. But AGC was used only on A.M. phone stations by most Hams well
into the 1960's. That's because one could not have a BFO operating for CW
(or, later, SSB) reception and have the AGC active. The BFO was, by
definition, on the I.F., offset only by several hundred Hz to produce the
beat note desired. So it triggered the AGC just like any gigantic signal
being received. With the BFO on, the AGC registered maximum signal and
completely desensitized the receiver.

I didn't care about not having an S-meter on CW, and I never met a Ham who
thought it was important back then. But "phone" operators became used to
having them and missed their S-meters as SSB took over from A.M. and they
had to turn on the BFO and turn off the AGC. That seems to have stimulated a
search for a solution.

In the 50's and 60's a separate I.F. amp strip just for the AGC started
showing up using a different frequency from the BFO so one could have the
AGC active and the BFO on at the same time. Also, there was a lot of
tinkering around with "audio AGC" where the AGC was triggered by the audio
level, not the I.F. signal, but they weren't popular. At audio it takes a
significantly longer for the AGC voltage to build up than at the much higher
frequency I.F., and that delayed the onset of AGC action. (Although it is
still around in limited use. The Elecraft KX1 uses audio AGC.)

When S-meters started showing up on communications receivers in the 1930's,
manufacturers needed to make the S-meter on all of their receivers respond
similarly to the same signal. That meant calibrating the S-meters to
register the same level for a given signal strength. Collins is usually
credited with deciding that 50uV at the antenna should produce a S-9 level
on the meter. That's how all Collins receivers were calibrated, at least for
a number of years.

Some other manufacturers such as National and Hallicrafters followed suit,
but some manufacturers discovered that many Hams loved what was called, on
the A.M. phone bands, a "lively" or "generous" S-meter that consistently
gave higher readings than other receivers. Of course, to the unsophisticated
Ham that suggested that his receiver was more "sensitive" - a highly prized
attribute.

Adding a preamplifier ahead of the receiver - a very popular add-on for 14
MHz and above - added gain that made the S-meter more "lively" too, even on
a well-calibrated receiver S-meter. It wasn't unusual to find that those
receivers registered S-9 on a 10 uV or less signal, often to the great
delight of the Ham owner resulting in happy reactions such as "Wow! You're
70 over 9 on my new Bandbuster receiver OM!"

Only in the last decade or so have I seen any particular interest among Hams
in calibrating their S-meters again, I suppose because it is possible to do
so in rigs like the K3. Somewhere along the way a slope of 6 dB/S-Unit came
into use. I'm not sure just when, but 6 dB/S-uint was the "standard" I was
aware of when I built my first homebrew superhet with an s-meter in the
early 1960's.

Fast forward to 2013 and for me the most useful signal indicator is the P3,
showing either the signal level at the antenna in -dBm or, for
traditionalists, in S-units. BTW, the P3 assumes 6 dB/S-unit too.

RST is not a reflection of S-METER readings at all. It is a means of
describing the quality of a received signal, not just the strength.

Furthermore Amateur radio manufacturers (not Elecraft) are notorious for not
following the 50 microvolts = S9 rule, so S-meter readings are meaningless
as measure of signal quality in most cases.

The link below describes the RST system for signal quality reports.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RST_code

The folks who defined the RST system probably didn't have S-Meters on their
receivers.

[Elecraft] Link-Unlink

2013-03-05 Thread Bill Breeden

I have been in at least four pileups where a DXpedition operator has
inadvertently linked his VFOs. I believe the first time I observed it was
during the HK0NA operation. It was a baffling experience the first time it
happened, but I think that a number of K3 owners figured out what was going on
quickly. I use the Sub button a lot myself and find that I sometimes Link
inadvertently as well, especially when I'm tired. I'm not suggesting moving
anything or creating another menu item, simply requiring a longer hold of the
Sub button to Link would solve the problem for me.

Here in CA, we certainly appreciate it when the shoe is on the other
foot, and DXpeditions in AF and the Near East stand by for us.

Except those EU run DXpeditions *rarely* tell Europe to standby and
work North/South America for hours on end on every open band like the
guys from TX5K have been doing the last couple days. If DXpeditions to
Africa, the Middle East and SE Asia would work NA/SA exclusively when
the bands were open for the first three days to a week, I (and a great
many others) would not be so put out about TX5K's "All Europe, all the

Some turkey was on 40CW last night complaining about them working EU,

Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter

2013-03-05 Thread Tom H Childers
RST is not a reflection of S-METER readings at all. It is a means of
describing the quality of a received signal, not just the strength.

Furthermore Amateur radio manufacturers (not Elecraft) are notorious
for not following the 50 microvolts = S9 rule, so S-meter readings
are meaningless as measure of signal quality in most cases.

The link below describes the RST system for signal quality reports.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RST_code

The folks who defined the RST system probably didn't have S-Meters on
their receivers.

[Elecraft] K3: remove birdies on a transverter band?

2013-03-05 Thread KD7YZ Bob
Howdy K3' people:

Don was telling me about removing birdies when I mentioned they seemed
all over my three transverters.

The manual says go to the IF, in this case 28mHz.

Well gee ... I don't hear them on 28 megs so I wouldn't be removing
anything if I tuned there and said 'remove birdies".

Any of you guys see plethora birdies down around 432.0 ->432.15 and/of
144.0 ->144.2 ??

I was going to try that, if it works, before locating the sources of
this monsters. Most seem to not go away if I remove the antenna. Some
seem to get loud if I move cables. I could run the rig on a large 12v
battery and switch the mains off if I wanted to reset all the
microwave and clocks .. and if I remembered to disable the 10k generator
that kicks in 30 seconds after a power failure.

Not much in the way of businesses to generate stuff out here; nearest
house about 3/4 mile but not line-of sight through the hills.

Re: [Elecraft] Timing is everything!

2013-03-05 Thread Bob

Or sleeping! I got them on 160 in 2 calls. However it was 4:30 AM on the
east coast. In a big pileup I'd never had made the QSO, I'm always 5 or
more layers down. Even at that hour it also removes most of the competition
from the west coast as they are sleeping to go to work the next day.

I'm in the log for ten QSOs so far, all at 5W. CW on all bands 40-10
and SSB on 40, 20, 17, and 10 (except the 30M QSO on the first day is
one of those missing from the online log). I'm still working on 80 and
160 -- so far, when they've been loud enough to work they've been taking
advantage of pretty good conditions to EU.

Some turkey was on 40CW last night complaining about them working EU,
but it's a very good thing that they're doing it. TX5K is easy from the
US, much tougher from EU. Here in CA, we certainly appreciate it when
the shoe is on the other foot, and DXpeditions in AF and the Near East
stand by for us.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Eric &Co.... Please relocate the Link/UnLink button.

2013-03-05 Thread Richard Ferch

W4TV wrote:

The display is VFO B *not* KRX3 receive frequency - the icon says "[B]"
not "[SUB]".

This is a key point. Ian's first post in this thread makes it clear that
his mental model of the two displays is that they track the two
receivers. This mental model may work with a dual-receiver K3 in
non-diversity mode, but it is not the most appropriate mental model for
a dual-receiver K3 in diversity mode. In diversity mode VFO B does not
track with VFO A; it is the subRX that tracks with VFO A.

In diversity mode, from the point of view of operating the radio there
is a single receiver controlled by VFO A. This receiver uses twice as
much hardware as a normal receiver, and it allows two simultaneous
antenna inputs instead of only one, but operationally speaking it is a
single receiver. In other words, a K3 in diversity mode is functionally
similar to a single-receiver K3 or a dual-receiver K3 with the subRX
turned off: VFO A always displays the receiver frequency, and the VFO B
display indicates where the transmitter will transmit in SPLIT mode.

Switching from a VFO A vs. VFO B display model (the current design) to a
main RX vs. subRX display model, as Ian has suggested, would waste the
capability of the VFO B display in diversity mode (what's the point of
dedicating display real estate to a second frequency display if it is
forced to be identical to the first display?). Having the VFO B display
tell you where the transmitter would be if you invoked SPLIT, exactly
the same as it does in a single-receiver K3, is a more effective use of
the display resources, particularly for someone wishing to work a split
pileup on low bands.

This is exactly what I *don't* want - I don't want to loose the ability
to read VFO B *even when in diversity* because it becomes impossible to
set a tentative split frequency without either engaging split or ending
diversity.

The display is VFO B *not* KRX3 receive frequency - the icon says "[B]"
not "[SUB]".

Please, NO! One *wants* VFO B visible precisely so the split transmit
frequency can be set accurately without disengaging split.

"Set accurately without DISengaging split"? I'm confused; that comment

Please read again what I wrote, Joe.

If Split is engaged within Diversity mode, my proposal would have VFOB
display the split TX frequency - exactly as it does now. But that
information should only be displayed AFTER the operator has actively
requested it by selecting Split.

My point is: if the operator has NOT chosen to select Split within
Diversity mode, then the present display is irrelevant and misleading.
It needs to be changed to show the true status, which is VFO B tracking
with VFO A on the same frequency.

What is interesting is that this has what is asked for, the P3 can have an
"S"
meter scale too. I was not aware of this. I did not see this in the manual

with the P3 you can then have an accurate "S" meter that is not effected by
the RF gain.

I'll have to find it in the menu. The Elecraft learning curve follows the

"Set accurately without DISengaging split"? I'm confused; that comment
bears no relation to what I wrote.

Normally (not sure on Elecraft's 'normal') a paper label is placed over silk

Hi All,

I was reading the DSP upgrade docs and am under the impression that all new
Main DSP PCBs being shipped are to be Rev D

I just completed assembly of SN6855 and noticed that my brand new main DSP PCB
reads Revision C on the silk screen.  It appears according to the upgrade link
here   http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/dsp_rev_c_information.htm   a sticker
and or some PCB modifications are to be done to older PCBs.   During close
inspection I was unable to find a sticker like the one pictured on the Rev B
PCB in the docs.   I found other square stickers with plenty of numbers and
letters but nothing showing clearly a D on it.

So this leads me to ask, How is a Revision C PCB being modified to be a
Revision D?  I see no cuts and jumps, no small PCBs, no added parts, nothing
out of the ordinary.

So do I have a Revision C or D DSP???

That's for sure: the blinking decimal point - or points - are far too
easily overlooked. Worse still, without a close study of the manual
they are totally meaningless. We have just seen this embarrassingly
demonstrated at TX5K.

So please make the VFO link/sync status as obvious as possible: have the
VFO B display show the true VFO B frequency at all times - not blinking,
not blanked but simply telling the truth. (The only exception should be
after Diversity and Split have *both* been selected.)

In normal diversity reception, the display should show the *true*
VFO B frequency - reassuringly synchronized and slaved to VFO A. It
should only display that alternative frequency if SPLIT has
actually been selected.

Please, NO! One *wants* VFO B visible precisely so the split transmit
frequency can be set accurately without disengaging split. The VFO B
frequency (*not* the KRX3 frequency) should not be hidden or disabled
simply because it is not being used unless the operator chooses one of
the alternative display parameters.

More to the point, split or dual Rx should override an alternate (Time,
PA Temp, etc.) display in the VFO B area and restore VFO B control to
the encoder.

You are seeing the effect of the switch from "phasing" reception mode to

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Assembly problems/Info 080 Message

2013-03-05 Thread Don Wilhelm

Tom,

I suggest we get the resistance readings straight before applying power.

Were the resistance readings made with the boards separated? They should
have been.

First check Control Board U3 pin 8 (with the board removed). Is 1.009
mean 1.009k or 1.009M? If your DMM is autoranging, you will have to
look at the range that was selected to tell the difference. 1k is not
good, but 1M is just fine.
The ">" symbol means "greater than" and any reading above the listed
value is just fine.
If the resistance there is 1k, then look carefully for solder bridges.
You may have to wick away any excess solder.
Solder just sufficient to fill the thru-plated holes is enough. If your
solder connections have a convex appearance, that can hide a poorly
soldered joint. A small concave solder fillet is OK.

All the resistances on the RF board appear to be OK *if* the range for
those readings is kohms.

On the front panel, J1 pins 10, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19 should be
resolved before proceeding with anything else.
Did you have the control pots all set to mid-range before taking the
readings. If the RF gain is not set to mid-range, that can explain the
low resistance reading, otherwise, begin looking for solder bridges.
I am suspicious of the resistance readings on pins 10, 12, 16, and17.
Those are digital signals and you would have no display at all if pin 12
is really grounded.
Front panel J1 pin 18 is the 5 volt supply to the front panel board -
again, if that resistance is really 25 ohms, you would be drawing a lot
of current on the front panel and nothing is likely to work.
Please recheck those resistances and please specify the units - ohms,
kohms or Mohms.

We can get to the U1 (and Info 080) problem and the last character of
the display after the resistances have been resolved.
With that many erroneous resistance readings. either there is a problem
with your DMM or you have many solder bridges to resolve.

I suggest we take this troubleshooting off reflector. It is getting too
long and most builders will not be interested in the specifics of th
troubleshooting steps.

Fred,

Here are two uses for VFO linking w/o diversity. I'm sure there are others.

Single SDR/panadapter/skimmer on VFO B IF. During everyday operation
linking the VF0's allows display of what's on VFO A centered on VFOA
frequency. The only other alternative would be an a/b switch or a second
SDR + additional sound card for VFOA. I've been toying with that idea
but $$ and no more slots on MB says no.

Another use is when you want a permanent S+1 or S+5 split while tuning

[Elecraft] LINK uses?

2013-03-05 Thread Cady, Fred
Good morning all,
I'm trying to get my head around the usefulness of linking main and sub
VFOs outside of diversity mode.
I think I understand Arie, PA3A's application (pretty neat idea):
You have Main and Sub on different antennas and there are times when
working a pileup you would like to listen in a direction other than
where the majority of callers are from. Say from C6 I might be running
Eu but have the possibility of mults calling in from Asia. Arie's slick
scheme allows both ears to switch to the Asia antenna on the Sub
receiver while still transmitting on the Eu antenna. Neat.

What other slick applications are out there for linking both VFOs
without going into diversity mode?

Cheers and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Erratic output power

2013-03-05 Thread Wes Stewart
Thanks for this.  I installed a couple of solder lugs (tags), bent them until
they touched and soldered them together. I did this in situ on the operating
bench.  Probably could have done a better job in the workshop but DX was
calling.

When first assembling the RF output connector and the KANT3/KAT3 board,
I didn't like the idea of using the long standoff pillar as a "ground"
return for large RF currents. The end of the pillar is actually quite
close to one of the mounting holes of the SO239, so a much shorter
return path can be made by using two solder tags, bent carefully so that
they overlap and then soldered together.

If Elecraft could supply a suitably drilled and twisted bit of metal,
problems in that upper rear right corner of the K3 might disappear.

[Elecraft] K3 button misadventures at TX5K

2013-03-05 Thread Mike K2MK
Using my Sub RX I was listening to TX5K around 0600z last evening with TX5K
in my left ear (Main) and the pileup in my right ear (Sub). He was working
EU only and indicating up 5. Suddenly he was in my right ear and my left ear
went silent. The next 5 minutes was total confusion. I suppose in the heat
of the pileup he tapped A/B when he should have held for BSET. I was
surprised at how long it took him to get things back to normal.

I'm spoiled by my P3. An A/B mistake or a LINK versus UNLINK error is really
easy to spot on the P3.

I would love having Diversity become the "easily accessible HOLD feature of the
SUB button", as suggested by Ian. But "if the manual Link control is removed",
how would one then engage it for non-Diversity applications?

I understand Ian's point about "confusion in Diversity mode"; I suffered from
that the first few hundred times I used it, too. However...I think I'd still
like to see where VFO B "would jump to on TX" before engaging the SPLIT button.
For me, a better solution would be to dim the VFO B display (relative to VFO A
intensity) when in Diversity mode and Split has not been selected. (I have no
idea if that would be possible.) The slowly blinking decimal point is a bit
too subtle and requires me to stare at it far too long to be the "right" way to
indicate Diversity mode for me.

My barefoot K3 and dipoles no higher than 40 feet have worked them on nine
bands and three modes (I don't need 26 band slots) - most of the time has
been spent listening while they were working "Europe only" on every
available band.

Whether phone, CW or RTTY the K3, KRX3 and P3 make an unbeatable team - see
where they're working on the P3, tune to the station he's working with the
KRX3 and call. Many times it did not take more than one call
- including 160 and 80 CW.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Eric &Co.... Please relocate the Link/UnLink button.

2013-03-05 Thread Arie Kleingeld PA3A

If so, defenitely opt-in here.
Let me share why, although I seldom use the link function through the
'sub' button.

In the big contests I often use diversity reception. There are
situations that when called, I want to listen to the sub rx or to the
main rx only.
That is fixed by setting macro's in the function keys of the logging
software (in my case N1MM logger)
F12 - Link function - sets both RXs to same frequency, same mode and BW
and LINKs de VFO's.

The F12 is the set-up button so to speak.
F11 - listen diversity - macro sets listening to A - b
F10 - listen sub rx - macro sets listening to b - b
F9 - listen main rx - macro sets listening to A - A

After setting up with F12, using LINK, I find myself switching through
the different options quite a lot. Other operators also love it. (Yes,
the K3 is a very popular rig at the clubstation)

If I have no computer is available, I do this by hand. So opt-in here.

73
Arie PA3A

--
There is an indication that the frequency is linked: a flashing decimal
point on the VFO B display. But since VFO linking is rarely used, I'll
add a menu entry to "opt in".

It took me three attempts, failing on the SVGA load the first two times,
even after switching both K3 and P3 off and then on.

I don't know whether this is significant but I had the SVGA disabled (I

decided to turn it back on and the SVGA loaded okay - it could have been

A manual Link control is not necessary for diversity reception. 'Sync
and link' already happen automatically when entering Diversity mode.

If the manual Link control is removed, Diversity would then become the
easily accessible 'hold' feature of the SUB button (available if the
second receiver is present, otherwise having no effect).

Another source of confusion in Diversity mode is the frequency display
for VFO B, which is not the true frequency of that VFO. (Obscurely, it
is the frequency that VFO B *would* jump to on TX, *if* the operator
*also* chooses to engage SPLIT.) That false frequency indication can
easily mislead the operator into believing that the two VFOs have not
been successfully synchronized.

only display that alternative frequency if SPLIT has actually been
selected.
