Re: [Elecraft] Solar Power for KX3
Up here in Alaska I had a few experiences using solar powered remote communication systems. I worked a couple years for the BLM Wildfire Center (Fairbanks) radio shop and we had some 5w GE repeaters installed in big fiberglass boxes with a square solar panel attached to the cover. We would just take them out to a location (usually a hill or mountain top) and set them on the tundra with the panel facing straight up. The panels never got direct sun but averaged about 70% of peak all thru the long arctic summer (20+ hours). I'm guessing the panel was about 20-30w. One summer/fall I worked for a bush PBS TV station (KYUK Bethel, AK) maintaining remote TV translators. Many ran on solar panels which were installed vertical on the side of plywood sheds that housed the equipment. The theory was the max solar power was needed in winter with short daylight near the horizon;' during the summer the sun was high but days were long so average power was much more. These were 2-3 30w panels for running 10w TV translators 100% transmitting an AM video carrier. My last work involved remote repeater sites only accessible by air *helo*. They ran on huge alkaline battery banks (10,800 AH) but had 200AH batteries with 60w panels recharging them in summer. Automatic voltage sensed switching changed over from solar to the alkaline plant. These panel were faced south at the optimum solar angle between noon and sunrise/sunset. For a portable backpack system one will have to rely on frequent repointing to keep the panel in optimum sun. Interestingly an overcast summer day has 70% of the sun's power on a clear day. A flexible solar panel can be rolled and carried in a tube. 73, Ed - KL7UW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

The organizers did a superb job. The badges were even placed in the clear plastic holder. Northern California DX Foundation provided nice lanyards for the badges. The program booklet is in color, glossy and very professional looking. Saw good friends Cam (N6GA) and Rich (KI6SN), who were working at the CQ booth. Also Fried and Sandy Heyn, Dick Norton and Vern (W6MMA) the antenna guy, and Joe, the Wireman. The Elecraft area was drawing the usual amount of attention. As hoped, there was a prototype KXPA100 amplifier on display. Rose Kopp and OM Ken were there with Rose's Elecraft covers. The XYL ordered a carrying case for my KX3 as a birthday gift. I should have it in about a month, which is fine. Someone tried stuffing the new KX3 amp into a KX3 carrying case, but it was an inch or so too short. Rose is already working on extending the case for that purpose. Also, Fred Cady was there with a proof copy of his new book on the KX3, which he said will be ready about the middle of May - just in time for Dayton. It will be available in both 8.5 x 11 format and also 6 x 9 as well. If you're thinking of ordering a carrying case from Rose, and you think you will be buying either the KXPA100 or the smaller-size KX3 book, be sure to let Rose know when you order. She will make the case about 1 taller at no extra cost. That's the way that mine was ordered. This is our first IDXC since about 2001, and it's much nicer having the facilities of the convention center, as opposed to the older Holiday Inn. Word is that there were about 800 pre-registered, and another 100 expected to register on site. Tomorrow, one more trip to the vendor area and an afternoon of talks on recent DXpeditions. 72/73 de Jim - AD6CW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html - No virus found in this message. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Rf connectors inside
Look for hifissb on Ebay.co.uk. They sell lots of modules from stripped equipment. Their email address is hifi...@gmail.com Reinhard has lots of ready-made TMP cables removed from current equipment and I'm sure he could help out, rather than you spending forever hunting out components and crimp tool. He's a nice, helpful guy and I hope to see him at the UK's National Car Boot Sale on 19th May. Recently, I purchased a few TMP sockets from Inrad, the filter people, but here's a warning. If you don't ASK them to send the goods by USPS First Class International, they will send them by some priority system. It's insane that some American businesses can sell $6 of components that fit in a tiny padded bag and then ship them for $38, when transit time is the same or just a day longer! I asked and they agreed to send the items for $7 by First Class International, but they arrived by Priority mail and my account was debited for $38 shipping. I protested and they refunded me $31. I had been asked to remind them on the order of the different postal arrangements and I did, but not in the way they had anticipated. Different minds Hi! I mention this only because you don't get if you don't ask! I always ask Elecraft to send stuff to me by cheapest air route to the UK. If the package is subjected to VAT by Customs, the purchaser is supposed to pay VAT on the shipping charge and often does. It can make a significant difference to the cost. 73 Dave G3TJP __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] W1: adapting for high power use
I need an internal wattmeter for a homebrew, legal limit, solid-state amp. Except for the fact that the W1 only takes up to 140W without modification, it looks like a great solution. I'm thinking about using a surplus bridge from an industrial ISM generator and padding the DC output by 12-dB before feeding (via miniature coax) to the junctions at D1/R3 and D2/R4. Can anyone think of a reason that this would NOT work? Also, if I simply change the voltage at TP1 by adjusting R17, does the entire power range follow, or does the accuracy suffer at one end of the range or the other? [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Final Build Assessment and First On Air Testing
Elecraft K3 Final Build Assessment and First On Air Testing So the Elecraft K3 build is finished ☺ Yes it has been a long process for me but only because of my time and schedule. I think this is a project you could finish in a weekend if you really put dedication into it but I’m not sure you would want to. I will explain this as I go along… The first questions I got were why would you do this? There are so many radios out there to purchase and some could argue many better. Well, that’s subjective of course and I’m a big fan of my Yeasu 1000mp, which I believe is my third one. I also love what Icom is doing with their new rigs but I remember a hobby that I used to table and build circuit boards, solder resisters and diodes and even build a Heathkit or two. I wanted to regain that experience in the hobby…. Get on air with something I assembled and tuned… something my hands were inside and I know where everything is and could replace if needed. How comfortable would you be installing a filter in your radio? I could do it in 10 mins now ☺ so that is a big part of the why. The second part – FUN. Yes, if you read my posts you will see some frustration in my build. There are a few reasons but one is I was sick during the first phase… I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and was in the midst of an episode when I was doing the first few days of assembly. Take that out and I think you would find that I was having much more fun. ☺ Also – I have a really busy with work, life and family so I wanted something that I could have to sit down and take my mind away. This project seemed like a great one. So here are the videos of assembly if you haven’t seen them and then I will provide you my overall thoughts below: http://nicktoday.com/elecraft-k3-final-build-assessment-and-first-on-air-tes ting/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KPA500 delay in amplification
Guys, I am using a K3 with a KPA500 and KAT500. Everything was working well until I tried sat down at the station this morning. When I key up, the KPA500 doesn't amplify right away. I am running into a dummy load with the KAT500 in bypass. For the first 4-5 seconds, the amplifier is only putting out about 40-70 watts with a 20W drive. After that, it goes up to about 350-400W. It also seems that the KPA is requiring more drive to get it up to 500W. So, I think something is broken, but I'm not sure what. Any help would be appreciated. Don, Given the myriad of stories about Tom not answering email, why in the world wouldn't you ask for his phone number? This seems a recipe for frustration to me. And honestly, Tom's explanation sounds like more excuse making to me. It isn't really hard to answer emails, and I'm pretty sure if someone is smart enough to design and antenna, he or she is certainly smart enough to answer emails. Gus, see Measured Power Consumption of the Elecraft K3/100 here: http://w9xc.net/articles/articles.html - Les, W9XC Abstract: When contemplating the prospect of operating portable with batteries, it's useful to have a clear idea of power consumption choices over a range of output levels. Data on power consumption can inform the choice of what power level to use, to optimize both battery life and communication. This short note presents data taken from measurements of the total power consumption (current draw) of the Elecraft K3/100 transceiver over a range of output power levels. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] NaP3 and KX3 connection
It depends on what else you're using with the KX3. Roaring star (Google KX3 NAP3 LP Bridge and the Roaring Star site will be near the top) has a really good tutorial about setting up the KX3 with HRD and LP Bridge. It's most likely that the KX3 is using COM3 to talk with some other software. Basically, you want to use LP Bridge (don't use v2-it's not stable enough) to connect to the KX3. Then, set up one virtual COM port for HRD (or whatever rig control software you're using), one for your logging software (I'm using N1MM logger) and one for NaP3 (or other SDR software). Other SDR apps may use different software in place of LP Bridge. I use the combination described above and it works pretty well. When you download the LP Bridge software, there is also a fairly detailed write-up about configuring the software and interfacing the sound card to the radio and software. It will probably take a little tweaking, but it's pretty well documented. Start up and shut down is order sensitive: radio first, LP Bridge next, then the other apps in any order. Turn everything off in the reverse order. 73, Giff / K1GAH KX3 #3724 Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Smartphone - Reply message - From: Ron Gruner r...@gruner.com To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] NaP3 and KX3 connection Date: Sat, Apr 20, 2013 13:28 I am trying to install NaP3 for my KX3. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Announcement
Good Evening, The weather has been cool to cold; from snow and hail to lots of rain. But it looks like there will be some sun one day soon. The elk are moving through to higher elevation. When they block the road they don't notice my little truck :) They look in the windows as they flow around me. Their antlers are intimidating. Good thing we don't have bison out here. Propagation has been bad all the way up to poor copy. Not a lot of on air practice but I can use the rig as a CPO while I listen to the ball game. With the Mariners at less than .500 I need something to do. So I send spec sheets with my paddles. There is the game, the code practice, and the spec sheet I've got to read anyway. The SB200 uses slow open frame relays for T/R switching, so it is not suitable for QSK operation, so use PTT in the K3 to allow the realys time to switch - or get a QSK add-on mod for the amplifier. As for the ALC, the best recommendation is to not connect it. Adjust the output of the K3 to properly drive the SB200 and there is no need for ALC. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/20/2013 4:49 PM, K5HM wrote: Have a newly refurb'ed SB200 that I want to run with my K3.
