Re: [Elecraft] Modern battery for K2

2013-06-20 Thread F5vjc
HI I have just acquired a Super Polymer Lithium Ion battery from an Ebay
seller, it's part no. is DC 1298A, (12V 9.8Ah)
Also received a small charger with this battery for 120-240 Vac. The
physical size seems like it will easily fit inside my K2 with room to
spare. Is this battery safe to fit internally in my K2 and recharge using
the supplied external charger?
Any advice appreciated, I have no experience of these batteries.

shipping. They do have many batteries in the US warehouse though.

Look for A123 ANR26650M1A at eBay.
Each cell: 3.3 volts, 2300 mAh, diameter 26 mm, lenght 66 mm
You need 4 of it and a balacer 4S1.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net results for 6/16/13

2013-06-20 Thread Edward R Cole
Not sure if I will be home to check-in the net (its our 10th wedding
anniversary and have a trip planned to a favorite seaside artist town
100mi south of us). But if able to check-in I will have my 100-120w
amplifier playing with the KX3 for those interested in how it
sounds. In the past I have used the 270w amp with either the K3 or
KX3 running 12w drive. I will check in the July 7 net if not home for June 30.

I operate with a Hygain TH3mk4 triband yagi at 50-feet and have
checked in with the radios barefoot at 12w.

This is the way it is intended. The rubber feet of the K3 and KPA500
touch the P3 and their carrying handles are on the outside. Also you will
note that the mic and headphone jacks are on the extreme left where their
cables will not get in the way of log books etc.
This is all fine and dandy until I had to set the station up as a field
portable. The position was cramped and the chair fixed. I had the P3
directly in front, but I had to reach to the left for all the important
controls. I had the bright idea of switching the positions of the KPA500
and the K3. It was much better. My right hand fell naturally upon the
tuning controls. When I got home I decided to keep the K line in the
reverse order. I use the rear sockets for mic and phones, so there is no
worry about leads crossing the operating desk. The handles of the KPA500
and K3 are now against the P3 case, but this makes little difference - See
the photo of my station on QRZ.com.
Hey, maybe Wayne and Eric are left-handers!

Mine seems to be as good as any radio that I have owned except for the K3
without the external one. I have been making many 6m QRP contacts SSB with
my KX3 to date 47 total in the last several weeks, using a small yagi.

If I were going to work weak signal usually not much done QRP a mast mounted

I K2 users

I am busy to assembel my front panel control board.

I am quit sure about how mounting the backpanel LCD light but I will be sure
before soldering it into the PCB board.

- I presume the K indication of the LCD backlight unit must be soldered into
the + (plus) indication on the front panel of the PCB board ?
- And the A indication of the LCD backlight unit must be soldered into the
no indication on the frontpanel PCB board ?

This is not clearly explained into the builders manual, but after some
investigation the direction of the backlight does not play any rule, you could
not mis allign
this backlight unit into the frontpanel board.
Every position brings the K connections of the backlight to the +

You should have removed nothing from the backlight assembly. The thin

[Elecraft] Front panel assembly

2013-06-20 Thread Behiels JeanPierre
Hi K2 builders;

In the main build manual of the K2 they refere on page 29 to fill the leaved
blank holes with components referering to the KSB2 unit page 16.
Those are :

- C4 to C8 0.01uF (103)
- Q3 2N3906
- RP3 10K (partnumber 77083103)
- R13 68K 1%

But regarding at KSB2 parts inventory this RP3 should be a 2K resistor network
6 pins partnumber 77063202or 980663202.
Installing instruction on page 16 of KSB2 tells this should be a 10K resistor
newtwork 8 pins ??
This component in not in the bag of the KSB2 option ?
All other supplementary components are found in the KSB2 bag ...
Any explanation about ?

Regards Jean ON4AEF.

Re: [Elecraft] TX - only cw display

2013-06-20 Thread Richard
I use the K3 cw decode for personal sending practice. It is useful, but I
prefer CW Get for sending and hearing training/practice because it prints on a
monitor and I can see and save paragraphs of text. I can use head copy and
then check the buffered text if I have a question.

It seems more useful for practice because I'm not trying to watch the decode
text as it goes by, and the decoded text is available for easy review after my
training session is done. YMMV.

The buffered text could be shown on a big monitor or projected to let an
audience read messages. A better presentation tool, IMHO.

[Elecraft] KX3 - Does It need Preamp for 6M?

2013-06-20 Thread Edward R Cole

Jim,

I ran the KX3 with my Mirage A1015G running 125w into a 3-elem yagi
for the June (8/9) ARRL VHF Contest and had no trouble hearing and
working 6m stations. I run the internal preamp set to 30-dB
gain. With that setting the noise floor raises to S2-3 which is
about right. The s-meter registers zero with PRE off.

Unlike the K3 the KX3 seems to hear well using the internal
preamp. You may wish to set the gain to 20-dB if you like quieter
monitoring. I have not measured MDS level using the shielded XG3 and
very good step attenuators/double-shield coax. -107 dBm level
produces a strong signal.

My KX3 spends idle time monitoring 50.125 USB for openings.

[Elecraft] KX3 - Does It need Preamp for 6M?

2013-06-20 Thread Edward R Cole
Wayne cites the MDS is -140 dBm with the KX3 preamp set to
30-dB. That is excellent and all that is needed for terrestrial 6m
operation.

I would dispute the advantage of mast mounting a preamp on 6m. I
recently showed a reader what the effect would be using a 0.5 dBNF
25-dB gain GasFet preamp at the antenna vs at the radio in an eme
operation. Sky noise temperature runs 2000K at 6m even for quiet
locations with the result of only increasing MDS by a tenth of a dB
when the preamp is located at/near the antenna. Use of low-loss coax
like Belden-9913 or Times LMR-400 is sufficient to run 6m preamp at the radio.

On frequencies 2m-and-up the sky noise situation changes this to
where there is marked improvement locating a preamp at the antenna
(and essential for weak-signal work like eme). I will be running
800-1000w on 6m-eme later this year (after the yagi is mounted on a
new tower) and will run my 6m GasFet preamp at the K3 using the RX input.

Re: [Elecraft] Front panel assembly

2013-06-20 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jean,

There are 2 RP3 packages in the KSB2 kit. - see the parts list part on
page 3 Components For the Front Panel Board.

The RP3 that is to be put on the KSB2 board is 2.0k and the one for the
Front Panel Board is 10k.

[Elecraft] KXPA100: Manual antenna switching and output power limit questions

2013-06-20 Thread edevelope...@yahoo.com
Hi All,

I searched Nabble and did not find these questions about the KXPA100 answered,
so apologies in advance if they have been asked/answered previously.

1. If one has the KXAT100 ATU option installed, and is using the KXPA100 with
an exciter other than the KX3 gasp, is manual antenna switching accomplished
with a long press of the ATU TUNE button, as appears to be so from the legend
on the control panel, or some other way?

(Full disclosure: I have an IC-703+ with the W4RT dual Collins filter kit
installed that unfortunately I get to use seldom enough that I can't justify
replacing with a KX3 at this time.)

2. Does the KXPA100 have any limitation on recommended power output when using
high duty cycle digital modes such as RTTY, JT65, PSK?

Thanks in advance and 73 de Tyler, KC2LST

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100: Manual antenna switching and output power limit questions

2013-06-20 Thread Lyle Johnson
My unofficial response is that this is a thermal issue. With adequate
cooling (operating on top of a glacier in Alaska in January), it can run
at 100W for a very long time. In a bad thermal environment (operating
in an olive drab canvas tent near Yuma at 1 PM local time in late June
with a paperback book or two stacked on top of the heatsink), it will
protect itself and go offline if it gets too hot.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - Does It need Preamp for 6M?

2013-06-20 Thread Jim Brown

On 6/20/2013 10:25 AM, Edward R Cole wrote:
I would dispute the advantage of mast mounting a preamp on 6m.

It all depends on how much loss is in your run of coax, and how quiet
your location is. The run to my SteppIR is 350 ft of 7/8-in hard line,
just under 1 dB at 50 MHz, and my QTH is not very quiet, so I'm happy
with my ARR GasFET preamp at the K3 patch point.

The decision to mast-mount or not is pretty simple. If you hear the
band noise increase by at least 7 dB when you connect the antenna, leave
the preamp in the shack. If the noise rises by only a few dB, compute
the loss in your line (see mfr data for the coax you're using). If the
noise increases by only 3dB with the connected (and no preamp), you'll
see an increase in your ability to hear weak signals of roughly one
third of the line loss. If the noise doesn't increase at all, you'll see
in improvement equal to ALL of the line loss.

How much is a dB worth? It all depends how close to the noise level the
signal is that you're trying to copy. If it's VERY close to the noise,
a dB or two can be the difference between making and missing the QSO.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100: Manual antenna switching and output power limit questions

2013-06-20 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Tyler,

Basically what Lyle said about power output vs ambient temperature.

Regarding the antenna switching, long press on the TUNE button changes
antennas. You'll also be able to configure the amp to select a
pre-programmed antenna port based on band. For example, a 6 meter beam on
ANT2 and a dipole on ANT1 etc. This will be configurable using the KXPA
Utility.

[Elecraft] KAT500: K# doesn't see it. Utility doesn't see it either

2013-06-20 Thread KD7YZ Bob
Howdy K3' people:

So I decided to tell the K3 that xv1 was not on, and BandMap that 50 was

I am listening to 50.1 but the antenna goes to Ant-2 on the KAT500.

Thing is that the ANT button on KAT500 will not cycle thru 1,2,3. And
the ANT button on K3 tells me 'no atu', which might be what it does. I
haven't used HF for a few weeks now.

The K3 has a cable which does go to the KAT500. I do power the KAT500
before powering the K3.

I have the cable from KAT500 to PC, as provided 'cept now the utility
does not find the KAT500 on the only three COM-Ports listed in device

what do I try next?

[Elecraft] Adding 100W amp to IC703

You might want to re-think that, depending on what other radios you
own. The KX3 with a 100W amp is a world class 100W radio, as good as
anything you can buy for for less than $10K. Also, I suspect that the
IC703 isn't very clean with respect to phase noise and TX IM products
(check ARRL reviews), so it may not be clean enough to drive an amp to
100W. That could result in some pretty unhappy ham neighbors.

So just because you can doesn't mean that you should. :)

If it was me, I'd sell the 703 and buy the KX3.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500: K# doesn't see it. Utility doesn't see it either

2013-06-20 Thread Dick Dievendorff
I'd look at the KAT500 Utility Configuration Menu, Edit Configuration, and
make sure that the desired antennas are enabled for 6 meters. Maybe ANT2
is the only enabled antenna on 6 meters. If it were, it would exhibit the
behavior you describe.

The K3's ANT button selects KAT3 antenna connectors. It doesn't affect
KAT500 antenna selection.

If the KAT500 is latched somehow (on all bands) and you want to force a
firmware load, you can force it into its boot block firmware loader by
removing the DC power connector, then press and hold the MODE button, plug
in the DC power, and after about 10 seconds a LED should start blinking. At
that point you should be able to load new firmware. This is described in
KAT500 Utility Help.

I'd consider removing the KXUSB adapter from your PC, wait a few seconds,
and insert it again. Then start the KAT500 Utility and see if it
reconnects. You can view USB port inserts and removes with the Windows
Device Manager. When you remove it, a COM port should go away, and when you
insert it, a COM port should appear. You might have to refresh the control
panel to see this. But it helps locate the right port #.

This is the way it is intended. The rubber feet of the K3 and KPA500 touch

This is all fine and dandy until I had to set the station up as a field
portable. The position was cramped and the chair fixed. I had the P3
directly in front, but I had to reach to the left for all the important

the K3. It was much better. My right hand fell naturally upon the tuning

I use the rear sockets for mic and phones, so there is no worry about leads
crossing the operating desk. The handles of the KPA500 and K3 are now

much directly in line with my vision to the right of the laptop [I find
I never seem to look at the radio anymore, just watch the P3], and the

My Elmer taught me to send right-handed and manipulate the receiver and

in my log. Now that I can put the Pigknob on the left, I'm finding it
very comfortable.

2013-06-20 Thread Bill Frantz
Hehe. My laptop computer is in front of me with the P3 SVGA
display behind it only partially obscured by the laptop screen.
The K3 is to my right (about 90 degrees) and the P3 it to its
right. My remote antenna switch is to the left of the K3. This
lets me run digital modes with very little attention to the
K3/P3 combination.

I use the RF gain to prevent overdriving the audio A--D
converter and the Shift/Width controls to narrow the bandwidth
of the K3 during a QSO. Otherwise I don't touch the controls
much. With RTTY, I use AFSK A and actually have to touch the big
knob. :-)

Logging occurs on the computer, and the broad view of the
signals on the band is behind on the SVGA display.

Life will probably change when my CW gets good enough to put on
the air. If I ran much SSB, I'd probably be using a foot switch
PTT and the CM500 microphone. As it is, I use a MH2 -- mostly
for local 2M repeaters.

YMMV!

Hmmm. My P3s sits on top of my K3s, left and right for SO2R, KPA500 is
way off to the side of the right radio on a shelf above the operating
desk. All I need to do with it is turn it on and off. My KAT500s sit on
that shelf, more or less above the two radios. I keep them in front of
me because I switch between antennas. SVGA monitors for the P3s sit on
the shelf above.

BTW -- I've been collecting 1024/768 monitors, which guys are giving
away, and using them for the P3s. I like the resulting display
resolution, and FREE is a great price! I use higher res monitors as
desktop extenders for the laptop.

I recently added the KPA500 to my K3 and P3.
I put the KPA500 on the right of the P3 with the K3 on the left, just as
is shown in all the K line adverts.
This is the way it is intended. The rubber feet of the K3 and KPA500 touch
the P3 and their carrying handles are on the outside. Also you will note
that the mic and headphone jacks are on the extreme left where their cables
will not get in the way of log books etc.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500: K# doesn't see it. Utility doesn't see it either

2013-06-20 Thread KD7YZ Bob

On Thursday Dievendorff used a Straight-Key to send:
-Original Comment---
I'd look at the KAT500 Utility Configuration Menu, Edit Configuration, and
make sure that the desired antennas are enabled for 6 meters.

that was one problem. Thanks

I'd consider removing the KXUSB adapter from your PC, wait a few seconds,
and insert it again. Then start the KAT500 Utility and see if it
reconnects. You can view USB port inserts and removes with the Windows
 Device Manager.

That was the other. A rebooot helped .. plus .. there were a dozen
remains of virtual ports.

Anyway, running fine now; loaded latest beta firmware 141 I believe.

How much can the KAT500 stand in bypass? I am testing my 2 x 3cx800a7's .
Howver, I am keeping it to about 350 watts for the time being.

Do all of you live many, many miles from the repeater that requires a high

Here along the west coast of the USA we use a simple 1/4 wave whip for
repeater connections since we are working a repeater on a mountain top in
line-of-sight from the rig.

The Yagi's and other gain antennas are for CW/SSB/DATA over long paths with
horizontal polarization.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500: K# doesn't see it. Utility doesn't see it either

2013-06-20 Thread Dick Dievendorff
You should be fine in bypass to the legal limit. We have tested to 1800 to a
good dummy load.
