Re: [Elecraft] [600MRG] Use of K3 on 600m (and below)
Jim, Yes, the lowest transverter IF is 7-MHz. Of course you can operate the K3 in low power transceive on any frequency from 490-KHz to 32-MHz if in the TEST mode. Only issue is VFO readout is the IF and not the operating frequency of a converter or transverter. But say you use 3.472-3.478 MHz as your IF? Your LO would be 3.000 MHz. This could even be a DDS oscillator locked to a 10-MHz reference. A simple mixer and LO without filters would work 0-500 KHz (maybe). The wider issue if using other ham transceivers that only operate in the ham bands. My K3 has the EXREF board for referencing to an external 10-MHz source. This enables 0.1 ppm accuracy. A 10-MHz LO is 1-Hz stabile. 73, Ed - KL7UW At 03:58 PM 9/10/2013, Jim Miller wrote: It would really be nice if K3 would support 80m as a transverter frequency. [Elecraft] K3 overheating smell after an hour or so.
I know this is like asking how long is a piece of string but like they say, if you don't ask I recently replaced the volume control in my rig and since then if the rig has been running for an hour or so I notice the smell of an over-heated component when I come into the room. The front of the right hand side panel near U12 5V regulator seems warmer to the touch than I would expect but everything is working fine. I have done a careful visual inspection and found nothing. It is a 100W rig with ATU and SubRcvr fitted and the input current with 13.5V is 1.54A which seems a bit high. So the question... anybody got any ideas where I should look? Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA; chars randomly omitted during Tx
Is there any resolution on this. I installed the SVGA last night and I am finding that the P3 sometimes finds the keyboard, mostly does not, and sometimes finds keys, but not always and sometimes misses characters from the playout buffer. I am off to find another keyboard to see how many of the problems this fixes, but I am somewhat concerned by the note in the SVGA manual: Most PC keyboards using an USB connection will work w ith the P3 SVGA. Apple keyboards are not supported at this time. Which implies some uncertainly over keyboard selection. Stewart On 12/04/2013 02:14, Richard Fjeld wrote: If anyone is following this thread, I was content with the P3 and had no intentions of getting the SVGA adapter. When I learned of the digital modes and USB keyboard capability, I added it. I tried the digital modes enough to like it. Computer software may give more extras, but I find it fun to rough it without a computer. I can imagine more refinements to come. At my age, I find the keyboard is a nice way to send CW because I can see what I am typing, correct my mistakes, and it is transmitted in perfect duration and spacing. From: Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com Subject: [Elecraft] OT: Hallicrafters SX-62 and external speaker available Someone gave me a vintage Hallicrafters SX-62 receiver with external speaker. Both are in fair shape, and could probably be of some value with a good cleaning. Based on advice from a radio refurbisher, I have not plugged in the receiver, and I'm pretty sure this unit hasn't been plugged in for at least 30 years. Apparently some collectors like to replace some of the capacitors first. I'd like to give these away for nothing but my cost of shipping. Otherwise they may end up getting recycled in some environmentally correct fashion. Please email me directly if interested. 73, Wayne N6KR That would be a nice little domestic friendly RX when restored. Hello All, I also would like to use 3.5 to 4.0 mhz for the IF frequency . I have completed the homebrew 630m transverter to work With the K3 . I am using 7 mhz IF , It seem to be stable , However It’s easier for me to build a more stable oscillator at 3.5 mhz. Also there is a broadcast station on 7.475 mhz . I can see the carrier on 475 khz , I have tried a few things To filter this carrier out, So far no luck , What a pain. Hi Stewart, We, along with many of our customers have had very good luck with the Logitech K360 Wireless keyboard. Two suggestions. 1. Since the antenna is different in the morning, check that connections are not getting damp inside overnight. 2. After the first ATU TUNE cycle, press the same button again within a second or two. Re: [Elecraft] RTTY with a K3/0
It is actually very easy to use RemoteRig and the K3 with RTTY. Assuming you have the cable already that goes between the radio RRC and K3's ACC port to turn on the K3, then this cable also has the wires connected to use FSK. Then all you need to do is the following: To *receive *RTTY (or any other digital mode), you need to pull the audio off the control RRC and put it through a sound card (or sound card interface) to decode things. Just use a Y-cable or similar, since an audio cable is already going between the RRC and the K3/0. To *send *RTTY, you can use one of two methods: - EITHER do so by using a sound card (interface) through the RRC's MIC jack, which would be AFSK (also use this method for other digital modes) - OR after connecting a USB cable between the RRC and PC, use native FSK mode by switching the serial COM3 mode to RTTY and using that virtual COM port with your program (look at the Windows Device Manager). 73, Mitch DJ0QN On 11.09.2013 19:16, Steven Bertsch wrote: I have a friend who lives in a retirement community about 100 miles from me and he has a K3/0 which he uses to remotely connect to my K3/100 and we're both using the RemoteRig boxes. [Elecraft] KX3 PRODUCTION firmware, rev 1.61: Improvements to SSB, ESSB, AM, KXAT3, etc.
KX3 production firmware rev 1.61 (with DSP rev 1.23) is now available. Since the last production firmware release (1.50), we've made the following major changes: * AM depth of modulation increased * SSB speech compression cleaner, more effective * ESSB implementation finished; CMP turned off automatically * Roofing filter FL2 usage in SSB receive mode is now configurable (kicks in at 2.9 *or* 2.4 kHz BW) * Narrow-band SSB receive (Weaver mode) has better fidelity * KXAT3 ATU recalls stored LC settings correctly in all cases * CW-in-SSB transmit added See release notes below for the full list of changes. ** IMPORTANT NOTE ** You'll need the *most recent* version of our KX3 Utility application to download and install the new KX3 firmware. Older versions of KX3 Utility may not load the KX3's DSP firmware correctly, due to increased flash memory requirements. For instructions on obtaining KX3 Utility, see: http://www.elecraft.com/KX3/KX3_software.htm Production releases are automatically downloaded from our FTP server when you click Copy Files from Elecraft. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * MCU 1.61 / DSP 1.23, 8-31-2013 * AM TRANSMIT IMPROVED: Depth of modulation increased. * SSB SPEECH COMPRESSION IMPROVED: Significant cleanup of opposite-sideband intermodulation (IMD) products with speech compression turned on. * CURRENT DRAIN LIMITS ADJUSTED: Receive and transmit current drain limits were set a bit too low, occasionally causing an unexpected roll-back of power output or turn-off of the KX3. Note: If rollback of power output still occurs, it is probably because the supply voltage is dipping below 11 V on keydown, or because of excessive transmit current drain, possibly due to a low-impedance load. * ESSB MODE IMPROVED: Speech compression is now automatically disabled when ESSB mode is turned on. This completes the ESSB implementation. To turn on ESSB, use the TX ESSB menu entry. Tap ‘1’ to turn ESSB on/off; use VFO A to adjust the transmit bandwidth from 3.0 to 4.0 kHz. (These menu changes cannot be made while in transmit mode.) * ROOFING FILTER USE CONFIGURABLE IN SSB MODE: Roofing filter FL2 (3 kHz) can now be inserted when the upper edge of the receive passband is either 2.4 kHz (original value) or 2.9 kHz. When the passband edge is higher than this point, FL1 is used (wide filter). If the KXFL3 filter option is not installed, FL1 is always used. If you frequently encounter QRM in SSB modes, use the 2.9 kHz selection; this will insert FL2 when normal passband settings are used. If QRM is less of an issue or you frequently use ESSB, use the 2.4 kHz selection (original value); this will insert FL1 for normal passband settings. The PBT knob can override either selection (see below). To select the desired FL2 insertion point: Locate the PBT SSB menu entry. Tap ‘1’ to select either 2.4 or 2.9 kHz using the criteria above. Impact of FL2 configuration on the NORM function: If 2.4 kHz is selected, NORMalizing the passband (by holding the PBT knob) will select FL1 (wide filter). If 2.9 kHz is selected, NORM selects FL2 (narrow). Impact of FL2 configuration on the PBT I/II functions: When LO-HI CUT is in effect for SSB, the FL2 setting determines when FL2 is inserted as HI CUT (PBT II) is adjusted (2.4 or 2.9 kHz). When WIDTH / SHIFT (NOR) is in effect, the FL2 setting affects both adjustments. For example, with the passband NORMalized, reducing WIDTH (PBT I) inserts FL2 at either 1.7 kHz or 2.8 kHz, for the 2.4 and 2.9 kHz FL2-insert selections, respectively. However, the insertion point for FL2 is also affected by the SHIFT setting (PBT II). Note on SSB demodulation methods used for FL1 vs. FL2: When FL1 is in selected (wide filter), the KX3 uses conventional SSB demodulation, providing the best overall audio fidelity. When FL2 is selected (3 kHz filter), the KX3 uses “Weaver” SSB demodulation, which introduces a narrow 1.5 kHz notch into the receive passband as part of the DSP algorithm. This notch typically has no impact on speech intelligibility, but it can sound slightly different to an operator who is most concerned about fidelity. * KXPA100/KXAT100 SUPPORT: (1) Tapping ATU TUNE tunes the KXAT100 if applicable. KX3 power output is set to 5.0 watts during auto-tuning, then restored to the user’s selected level. (2) KXPA100 amp/tuner faults are displayed on the KX3 and can be cleared by any switch tap. (3) The FW REVS menu entry shows the KXPA100 firmware revision (rotate VFO A to see all firmware revisions – uC, DSP, PA). Note: All KXPA100 integration features require use of the KX3-to-KXPA100 control cable, and the PA.X MD menu entry must be set to ON. MCU 1.57 / DSP 1.22, 8-17-2013 * 12-kHz AUDIO SPUR ELIMINATED: Some operators reported hearing a very weak 12-kHz tone at the headphone jack, even with the volume turned all the way down. This tone has now been suppressed by an additional 20
Re: [Elecraft] K3 / MH2 - No TX Audio
Update on this - * Worked with the seller to figure out what could be wrong. He had never used this K3 for SSB/voice. Always CW. * The nice folks at Ham Radio Sunnyvale let me try a few kenwood mics to test. None of them worked. * Spoke with Howard (Elecraft Support) and he gave a few pointers on what could be wrong After discussing with the seller, decided to open the unit and found that on the DSP board attached behind the front panel, a 5/6 pin connector, just between the AF/SQL nobs was completely off its mating black connector. Not a single pin on that connector was in place. Static mat spread, and re-aligned the board. Front mic transmit now works just fine! I was surprised nothing else was wrong with the radio with that entire connector off its alignment. Next problem: After going to factory defaults and all calibration with a dummy load, the radio is not transmitting well on 20 meters. With 12W set, it barely does 5 watts out. Elecraft (Howard) suggests I go through the calibration process again with the filter offset etc. Will try again this evening. I also got a bunch of offline responses on this problem. Re: [Elecraft] Disabling the ANT2 selection
If you do switch to ANT2 by mistake and transmit, the K3 will not be damaged. It is very well protected against open loads and shorts at the antenna jacks. Chances are you'll realized quickly that you're on the wrong antenna since RX noise will drop. If you're really worried about this, you could connect *both* antenna jacks to the same feedline using a short 'Y' arrangement. A purist would be concerned about the slight change in impedance, but if the 'Y' uses very short cables, you probably won't notice any difference in performance. Mapping ANT2 out completely would require a firmware change, and though I can put it on the wish-list, I can't guarantee that it will be implemented (quite a few things on this list!). 73, Wayne N6KR On Sep 11, 2013, at 4:45 PM, Jorge Diez - CX6VM cx6vm.jo...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Tom Why? Royce, Remove the left side panel, and you should see a 5.6k resistor soldered between pin 6 and pin 1 of the microphone jack. Lift the resistor from pin 1 and an non-amplified Kenwood microphone should work just fine. If it is an amplified mic, you will have to remove the front panel and chenge the microphone configuration header to route +5 volts to pin 5 instead of pin 6. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/11/2013 8:09 PM, ROYCE RAINWATER wrote: I have purchased a used k2 which has the ksb2 ssb adapter installed and was used with the elecraft hm 2 which I did not get. Re: [Elecraft] Disabling the ANT2 selection
I can attest that you won't hurt your K3 if you're on the wrong antenna connector, I've done it. The Antenna selection is remembered by band [at least]. Somehow, I managed to get 30m on ANT2 which had nothing connected. No noise, infinite SWR [which the KAT3 managed to tune ... not really good but it never gave up. :-) After some discussion with tech support, they elevated it to Wayne, he called me, first question was, Which antenna is selected? Several lessons here: 1. It's a fairly busy display, but look at all of it. 2. Keep a station journal, write your menu settings down and when you change them. 3. When something stops working, read your journal and see what you did last. Odds are very good that is it. 4. Unless there's been smoke, the likelihood that the problem is huge is extremely low. 5. I seriously doubt one of the principals of Yaesu would call me if I had a problem with my FT-847. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org The problem with 'lessons learned' is that they rarely are Leo Endres, Engineer and Philosopher [and colleague] On 9/11/2013 5:17 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote: If you do switch to ANT2 by mistake and transmit, the K3 will not be damaged. [Elecraft] KX3 Firmware Utility on Mac OS X Problems...
After seeing Wayne's message from earlier today about the KX3 rev. 1.61 firmware update being available I went to update the firmware on my KX3. I ran into a couple of problems. Problem 1: I had started up the KX3 utility to load new firmware. I ran into all kinds of problems getting it to talk to the KX3. Apparently, it looked like it was the wrong port but I had attempted the firmware upload and this seemed to affect my KPA500 and the KPA500 had MCU upload on the display. Nothing would fix this, I tried a full power cycle (back side power switch) but when it booted up it still said MCU upload. So, I decided to run the KPA500 utility and connect to that port and send all firmware to the KPA500. This seemed to work as the KPA500 is now working fine. But, how could I mess up the KPA500 by using the KX3 utility. I reminded myself that I have seen this before but not as drastic where it needed a firmware refresh. It looks like the KX3 utility program will begin to execute a firmware download WITHOUT first verifying that it is indeed talking to a KX3. In this case, it was talking to a KPA500. Has anyone else seen this problem or behavior? Yes, clearly my fault on two counts: (1) I attempted a firmware load on a port without first testing the port communications; (2) I did not update the KX3 utility program as instructed in Wayne's e-mail as I just read enough of that e-mail to see that the KX3 firmware had been released. Problem 2: With the NEW KX3 utility, I started it up and went to find the right port. I do this by testing comms on the port until successful. For some reason they change from time to time (probably my mucking around with lots of devices). So, I get a dialog box that says that the port does not appear to be a KX3. I was just about to move the mouse to the OK button and clear that message dialog box when another dialog box came up telling me that I had new firmware to download to the KX3. Now, my attempt at clearing any of these dialogs was locked up. I think the two dialogs got into some kind of deadly embrace and nothing could be cleared. I had to kill the KX3 process to clear things up. Note: I have yet to successfully install the new KX3 firmware. Right now, the KX3 utility is hung trying to complete a firmware download from Elecraft servers. It should connect and then report to me that it already has the latest firmware but apparently it has not yet successfully connected. Been 20 minutes and I figure that is long enough -- well, kill -9 again. 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [OT} Wireless chargers (or transmission of electrical energy by wireless methods.)
Don't forget an ancient experimenter that wanted to transmit energy: considerable amounts, by wireless!!! He wasn't stupid and was deadly serious about this quest. Read his history! His name was Nikola Tesla who spent untold amounts of money trying to do just this! He wasn't successful except over very short distances and the efficiency wasn't good. So don't get your hopes up. Tesla revolutionized the AC electric generation and transmission system with Westinghouse bankrolling him and made the polyphase AC system the cornerstone for all the systems on the grid today except for the small amount solar and wind power contribute at this time. There really isn't a technology that will outdo steam turbine power generation except perhaps for nuclear plants which can become runaway hazards as demonstrated by 6 Mile Island and Chernobyl Russia meltdowns plus the tsunami upset nuclear plants in Japan! Engineers and ecologists still haven't found a way to safely store spent nuclear fuel rods without them having the possibility of becoming toxic and extremely dangerous in the future. Transmitting megawatts of power versus just a few watts wirelessly are horses of two completely different colors in spite of what the dreamers say. 73, Sandy W5TVW -Original Message- From: Tim Hague Sent: Wednesday, September 11, 2013 11:30 PM To: Erik Basilier Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [OT} Wireless chargers I can't post on the site but I'd like to ask about the EMC conformance of such a device, another PLT saga coming up. [Elecraft] [OT] HRO Sunnyvale
When I was trying to get the Yaesu FTM-10 installed in my Miata to receive AM broadcast, HRO Sunnyvale let me run through 4 or 5 2M-70cm whips to find one that would allow AM reception. I ended up with a small Larson whip and a lot of respect for a store which would let me take the antennas out to the parking lot to try them with the radio. Re: [Elecraft] [OT] HRO Sunnyvale
I agree! All HRO Sunnyvale folks are super helpful and HRO prices are typically the cheapest in the ham radio sellers list. I wish they stocked and sold Elecraft products that you could touch, feel, drool and then go back and buy. --- Hint Hint @Wayne ;) -- VaibhaV W7VAI On Wed, Sep 11, 2013 at 10:24 PM, Bill Frantz fra...@pwpconsult.com wrote: When I was trying to get the Yaesu FTM-10 installed in my Miata to receive AM broadcast, HRO Sunnyvale let me run through 4 or 5 2M-70cm whips to find one that would allow AM reception. Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA; chars randomly omitted during Tx
That is not a helpful response to what is actually a serious question! Is the key map issue such that not only do we need to use one of a relatively restricted set of keyboards, but also the keyboards for one particular country are required? The symbols on the keys are different in different countries, and my guess is that this is resolved in the key map in the driver on the computer, rather than the k/b h/w. To compound the potential for annoyance here, keyboards have a much shorter life than radios, and so many users will need to replace their keyboard at some stage. However the key mapping for even US keyboards of a particular brand may change over time, after all in their normal mode of operation, all that is required to support a revised h/w mapping is that a new mapping file is shipped to one OS company.
