[Elecraft] AF1 Audio Filter Question
Just completed building an (external) AF1 audio filter mini module (Rev A board that required the cutting of a solder trace on the AF input and the addition of a jumper on the AF output). Works great except, I've noticed two things I'm curious about: 1. With stereo headphones plugged in, one the audio in one channel is noticeably louder than the audio in the other channel. 2. If I plug a speaker in with a monoral 1/8 plug all the way, I get audio out but the volume is low and there's some significant distortion in the audio output; BUT, if I insert the plug in just part way, I get lots of volume and no distortion. Wonder what might be causing this? Wouldn't think much of item two (figure I should just be using a stereo plug to connect my speaker), but the presence of the distortion and the lack of balance when using my stereo headphones makes me wonder if maybe the LM386 chip might be damaged. - Paul N6LQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KX3 CAT control fails via KXPA100
My KXPA100 arrived yesterday. It's a great amp and very easy to setup and use. I have one unexpected issue though. Set up is PC connected via KUSB to the KXPA100, KXPA100 connected by KXPACBL to the KX3, and latest firmware on both. When PA Mode is set to on, Amateur Contact log cannot read or set anything (e.g., frequency or mode) on the KX3. When PA Mode is set to off, all works as expected. Re: [Elecraft] AF1 Audio Filter Question
Paul, If you look at the schematic, you should see that the output jack is a stereo type with both channels connected together. That means your stereo headphones should receive the same signal in both channels. Try turning the phones backwards and see if the louder channel reverses - if it does, then the headphones are not balanced (maybe one is faulty). OTOH, if the weaker channel stays with the same ear, your hearing in that ear is diminished. Your observation with the mono speaker plug is what is to be expected - when you push the plug in all the way, you are shorting the output due to the sleeve of the plug contacting the jack's normal ring connection. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/28/2013 5:01 AM, Paul Clay wrote: Just completed building an (external) AF1 audio filter mini module (Rev A board that required the cutting of a solder trace on the AF input and the addition of a jumper on the AF output). After 30 minutes of futzing around it magically started to work. Unfortunately I never figured out exactly what I did to make the difference... I suggest you concentrate on one path, either digital/DM780 or voice, then tackle the other. Voice might be easiest first, it sounds like you are 1 step from success there. I never use voice, but I suspect your mike routing is incorrect. Plug your heil mic into the mkII front panel mic jack (lower left corner). Then play with all 3 settings of the router Audio Settings Tab, Microphone Selection to see if any is a winning combination. Auto should work. mkII is probably selecting the front mic, but that jack is currently empty (ie, currently plugged into the k3, not the mkII). One issue that plagued me in the beginning (ie with the 7000) was that the identifies for the codecs kept changing under my feet. I was misconfiguring something at the windows level and the name would change from microHAM CODEC to 1-microHAM CODEC, then 2-microHAM CODEC, etc. every time I replugged the USB cable. Be sure windows current id, ie the one mkII router is using, matches the one used by DM780. [Elecraft] KRX3, KXV3A, IF-out
Hi, Just about to throw the switch on a KRX3 order. Going over the manuals I see no way to attach the IF-out of the KXV3A to the sub-receiver. It seems natural to use the panadapter on the sub to watch other bands while working with the main rx. Am I missing something, or must the IF-out come from the main rx? [Elecraft] OT: For Sale: Re-furbished HAL DKB-2010 CW/RTTY Keyboard Keyer
I have for sale a HAL Communications CW/RTTY Keyboard Keyer with the add/on 64/128 key extended memory option. This unit was manufactured in the early to mid 1970's and was one of the more expensive keyboard keyers of it's day. Factory assembled ones cost $799 without the extended memory option and you could get it in kit form as well for $499. This one is very clean considering it's age and after cleaning all the key contacts and replacing a broken rear-panel connector, it operates perfectly. It shows some keytop wear but all are readable and all function properly. It has several diode matrix programmable keys that currently contain CQ, 73, SK(VA) and a Here Is key that can be easily programmed by un-soldering and changing the pattern of 1N270 Germanium diodes in the matrix. Up to 15 characters can be programmed for the Here Is message. If one can't find 1N270 diodes any more, the low forward voltage drop Schottky ones most likely can be used instead as they are not critical. The unit comes complete will the original book and CW cable. I do not believe it was ever used for RTTY and to do so you'd have to make up a special cable as it was designed to key an RTTY current loop like the old machines used. There's no loop supply inside the keyboard, Looking at the schematic, I think it should be able to key the direct FSK inputs of the more modern rigs like the K3, Yaesu or ICOM rigs as the output is a transistor switch that is isolated so you can key either positive or negative loops depending on how it's originally set up. For this though, you're on your own as I haven't tested this. It can key either grid-block (minus) or cathode (positive) inputs for CW. If your rig is solid state most likely keying is TTL and that will be + on the center conductor which you key to ground. The cathode keying terminals are used here and it works perfectly with my K3 and a Kenwood TS-140S I have in the shack. The included cable is set up this way so it should be pretty much plug-and-play for the newer solid state rigs. The manual is a full blown operator/maintenance technical manual with excellent schematics, pictorial PC layouts and explanations of how everything works. They don't include manuals like this with ham equipment any more. I can email pictures to anyone that requests them. Asking $135 shipped anywhere in the US by FedEx Ground Home Delivery. This unit is also listed on the Flying Pigs and 4 State QRP Group reflectors. If interested, the first I'll take it email (by date time on the message) gets it and I'll accept PayPal (Gift - PayPal doesn't charge a fee for this) or add 5 percent to cover their fees. Please reply off list to keep the clutter down Jim - W0EB PS: only reason I'm selling this is I got a nifty TONO EXL-5000E RTTY/CW/AMTOR terminal unit and there isn't room on the desk for both of them. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] 144XV construction experience?
I have preamps on multiple VHF and UHF antennas on the same tower mast. All preamps are powered off together by a master sequencer so if I transmit on one band all others are off. The TR relays also are switched at the same time disconnecting all preamps from their antennas when any one band is in transmit. Exception are the HF antennas and two VHF antennas that are used on FM (only one has an in-line preamp which is RF switched). I run 1300w on the eme array (ERP=135 kW) which is about 130-feet away with no issues observed. The two antennas point at each other when the Moon is in a particular position (az=235) but Moon is usually elevated above the FM antenna (a yagi) by about 30-degrees so RF is down about 25-dB in the direction of the FM antenna. Space loss for 130-feet lowers RF to a non-damaging level for receiving devices (which I consider 0 dBm). Interestingly, the personnel RF safe zone on-axis for the 2m eme signal is 75.52m (247-feet). But it is safe at head height directly under the eme tower which is 13.7m (50-foot). I would not transmit when anyone climbed the other tower. A very nice program called EMRCalc is available from VK3UM to evaluate RF safety zones from your antenna. 73, Ed - KL7UW --- From: Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] 144XV construction experience? These events include: band change, mode change, VFO movement, RIT/XIT offset change or clear, and several additional switches (e.g., A/B, REV, A=B, SPLIT, CW REV, RIT, XIT). IF responses are suppressed during VFO movement. Notes: (1) putting the K3 into auto-info mode 1 (by sending AI1;) causes an initial IF response. (2) The K3 can be placed into AI1 mode without a PC by setting CONFIG:AUTOINF to AUTO 1. The user may do this to support non-PC devices that make use of auto-info, such as a SteppIR antenna controller. Application software can check for unexpected IF responses and turn AI off if required. AI2, Auto-Info Mode 2: The K3 sends an appropriate response (FA, FB, IF, GT, MD, RA, PC, etc.) whenever any front-panel event occurs. This applies to all of the events mentioned for mode AI1, and ultimately to all rotary control changes and switch presses. At present only a subset of controls generate responses. AI3, Combination: This is similar to mode AI2 and is provided only for compatibility with existing programs. /quote TIA -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] AF1 Audio Filter Question
Hi, Don. I thought to swap the headphones around to see if it might be my hearing in one ear; the reduced output swapped to the other ear. Will check using other sound sources to see if it might be the phones themselves. What's confusing me a bit is the distortion that's introduced by plugging in a monaural plug feeding speaker all the way. It's a scratchy sound that I can make go away by reducing the volume control on the radio providing the audio in to the AF1 - I'm driving the AF via my Icom R-75s external speaker port, the receiver's headphone jack or rec line out - but then the AF1s audio output is too low to be enjoyable. Suppose I could just do a mod to replace the AF1's stereo out jack with a monaural one, and then using an adapter plug between the output and my stereo phones, but would like to leave the AF1 unmodified if possible. R, Paul N6LQ On Sat, 12/28/13, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Subject: Re: [Elecraft] AF1 Audio Filter Question To: Paul Clay mr_pookie...@yahoo.com, elecraft@mailman.qth.net Date: Saturday, December 28, 2013, 5:46 AM Paul, If you look at the schematic, you should see that the output jack is a stereo type with both channels connected together. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Scroll down the page to the heading: Connecting K3 Sub-Receiver IF to LP-Pan: I tap the IF using a .001 uF disc. ceramic cap to connect at w-3 or pin-1 J78 on the sub receiver pc board using RG-174 coax cable which is run thru a hole in the KRX3 shield to the aux BNC connector. Re: [Elecraft] 2m Module
I am sure the Elecraft crew is working within the resources and limitations that they have. We will hear more as more information becomes available. I, too, have been waiting for the 2m module. That will make my backpacking radio set up complete. However, I'll stay patient in waiting. Elecraft makes some really good products and there is probably a good reason why there is so much of a delay. Last I heard was the amp was coming first, once that hit the market then the pace was to speed up on the 2m module. The amp has hit the market so we should be getting close on the 2m module. If I was to guess - the crew at Elecraft is probably taking a holiday break, a much deserved one :) Maybe we'll hear something after the first of the year. Steve, KC8QVO On a side note, I looked through the FAQ page on the 2m module and see that it looks like they have opened up the receive range to include the weather band, at however degraded the performance becomes. If that is true - THANKS ELECRAFT!!! [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter alarm function doesn't activate on hogh SWR
Hello folks, I sent this to Support, but they are probably resting up until Monday, so I thought I would ask here. Has anyone had this problem with the W2 wattmeter? I just assembled my unit. It seems to work correctly except that I can't enable the alarm function. 1. When I turn the W2 on, I hear the relay click, and it does interrupt the ptt at this point. 2. The W2 utility program (USB, running on XP) finds and communicates with the W2. When I click on the ALARM button, the label changes from OFF to ON. 3. But when I test it by transmitting into a 'wrong' antenna (SWR=13:1) it does not flash LEDs or activate the relay. 4. Firmware is 1.00 and utility program is also 1.00. Has anyone had a similar problem? -- Vic K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Has anyone used their KX3 with one of the SCS Pactor controllers?
Carlton, I have an SCS PTC II which I have used for WinLink using another rig other than my KX3. I run about 15 Watts when I do that. I have been quite successful connecting to WinLink stations using both pactor I and II. I also have a SignaLink USB. I went ahead and ordered the cable to go with my KX3. In this mode, I run winmor for Winlink connection. However, I only run 3-4 Watts. I live in Annapolis, Md, and I usually connect with a station in Florida or Canada. The trick is to pick the correct frequency for the time of day. The other thing is to know whether it is better to connect to a station nearby or 1200 miles away. As I have only one station nearby, ~120 miles, I usually use the Florida station, ~ 1000 miles, on 20m meters in the afternoon. Re: [Elecraft] K3-DXLabs-LP-Bridge AI command question
The AI boxes in LP-Bridge have nothing to do with the AI mode of the K3. These are used to simulate AI modes for apps connected to each virtual port. LP-Bridge forces the K3 into AI2 mode all the time. With many apps trying to control the rig, it would be a mess to let each one try to change the AI setting in the rig, therefore all AI commands are intercepted once LP-Bridge puts the rig in AI2 mode. As far as DXLabs goes, many users run it with LP-Bridge, but there are so many hardware and software variables between stations that it's hard to make direct comparisons. Re: [Elecraft] Is it Competition
To be brief...I owned my first K3/P3 together with a KW TS-590. I preferred the K3 for weak CW in my city QRN, but decided to leave Elecraft until their products matured. The 590 is nice, and while it has a few warts, works ok for me. Four years later...I bought and tested for almost a month a TS-990 against my 590. I felt the 590 was as, if not more, capable than the 990's main receiver, and equal to the sub receiver on weak CW 20-160M in the presence of city QRN. I didn't test it in a crowded contest. The 990 has lots of features and interface bling. I sold the 990 at a loss to revisit the K3/P3. I find that the K3/P3 have matured, and fully filtered still does better dealing with weak CW than my 590. 73, Gary NL7Y -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Is-it-Competition-tp7582146p7582201.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] SDR transmitter issues?
Hi all, With regard to SM5BSZ's SDR wideband-noise performance table (http://www.sm5bsz.com/dynrange/dubus313.pdf): The reason the K3 has excellent wideband transmit noise suppression is that it is a down-conversion superhet with a very clean synthesizer and transmit chain. This was intentional. We had several customers in our K3 focus group--VIP contesters and DXers--who were within line-of-sight of each other's QTH's, up on a ridge. They were tired of hearing their respective phase noise when they all happened to be on the same band. They asked us to do something about this, and we accepted the challenge. To ensure as clean a signal from the transmit chain (DSP/DAC/TX mixer) as possible, we routed it through the same crystal filters used by the receiver, as well as through an additional 4-pole crystal filter that immediately follows the transmit mixer. The two filters in series do a great job of band-limiting transmit phase noise before it even gets to the mixer. While this basic architecture is used by other superhet transceivers, they may not have as clean a synthesizer as the K3, or they may lack the second filter in series with the transmit path, or they may have such complex conversion schemes that noise is allowed to leak in at various points. In some cases they use a DDS without a following PLL/VCO, or their VCO may be operating a high kHz/volt tuning ratio, leaving it susceptible to higher phase noise, especially on the higher bands. We went to extremes to keep the synthesizer's kHz/volt ratio as low as possible, with a combination of switchable hi-Q inductance (1 uH/0.25 uH) and lots of switchable fixed capacitors. The inductors and larger capacitors are switched with relays to eliminate any loss of Q in the VCO's tank circuit. The smaller capacitors are switched with PIN diodes, but because they're a small part of the total C, this has a negligible effect. The KX3 is no slouch, either, falling about in the middle of this particular evaluation table. But the KX3 doesn't have the benefit of routing its TX signal through crystal filters (there are no crystal filters in a pure SDR), so the noise performance is determined almost entirely by the transmit DAC and its following amplifiers. We made these as clean as possible within budgetary constraints. We could have used a much more expensive DAC and added more shielding and filtering, but that would have pushed the radio to a higher size, cost, and current drain than we wanted. It's nice to have further confirmation that, despite the relative simplicity of the KX3's transmit architecture, it still comes in ahead of many radios touted for their sophistication and high performance. 73, Wayne N6KR On Dec 27, 2013, at 5:00 PM, Bruce Beford bruce.bef...@myfairpoint.net wrote: You're not missing anything. I still believe (personally) that my K3 is a better all around transceiver than my KX3. But- they each have their strengths. 73, Bruce N1RX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3-DXLabs-LP-Bridge AI command question
Well since I tried to cover all my bases and ask this on 3 different reflectors, in the hopes I might get an answer I could use, I'll sum up the results and post them now. First, thanks to all who responded to my questions. Second I'm not trying to bash LP-Bridge, only find a fix for my problem, and I hoped the new info about AI from Dick might help solve it. Dave AA6YQ says: When Commander starts controlling a K3, it sends an AI2; command unless you have Continuous interrogation disabled, in which case it sends an AI0; command. Larry N8LP says: The AI boxes in LP-Bridge have nothing to do with the AI mode of the K3. These are used to simulate AI modes for apps connected to each virtual port. LP-Bridge forces the K3 into AI2 mode all the time. With many apps trying to control the rig, it would be a mess to let each one try to change the AI setting in the rig, therefore all AI commands are intercepted once LP-Bridge puts the rig in AI2 mode. and from Dick K6KR, I learned how I could put the K3 into AI2 myself, independent of either DXLabs or LP-Bridge, by using the K3 Utility pgm. Over the last two years I have been using 2 different boxes, during which I was encountering random LP-Bridge crashes on both. I say random because there was nothing that would cause the crash. I could leave the pgms running and not touch anything yet after while LP-Bridge would crash with a Runtime error. One box was an AMD 2.9 Ghz, 4gig ram, with both Win7 Pro 32-bit and 64-bit. The other box is an AMD 4.0 Ghz, 32gig ram with Win7 Pro 64-bit. Both machines have real serial ports, not usb to serial, and the serial cards were different on the 2 boxes. I always set the polling rate for LP-Bridge to 200ms NaP3 DXLabs for 300ms as was suggested by Larry here: http://www.telepostinc.com/NaP3.html#Setup quote Rig Timing (ms)... Polling Interval: Defaults to 300ms. If using LP-Bridge or LPB2, be careful when setting this lower than 300, and never set it lower than the setting in LP-Bridge or LPB2. In general, this should be set about 100ms slower than the LP-Bridge / LPB2 setting. /quote Over the last 2 years I've made a several runs at solving this. I have ask on the LP-PAN list a number of times about my crash problem. Each time it seemed I was the only one having the problem, so I would wait a while and ask again later in the hopes that someone new to the list might also have the problem and maybe even the solution. But if others can't duplicate the problem, of course they can't help fix it. :-( So I have just tolerated it or just not run LP-Bridge if it got to bad. Some days I could run LP-Bridge all day, but then if it crashed once, it would continually crash the rest of the day, even after reboots. All the above is just to give details, not to bad mouth LP-Bridge! I love it, it's a valuable tool, that is why I keep trying to use it, but it's hell trying to use it, if it won't stay running. It's a bit to soon to tell, but I have had some success over the last week, even before Dick's info about the K3's AI setting, just by chance I had tried setting the DXLabs virtual port in LP-Bridge to AI2, at least it would run longer before it crashed. So to sum this up, now I have the K3 set to AI2 Larry says LP-Bridge defaults to AI2 when it talks to the K3 Dave says DXLabs Commander uses AI2 for continuous interrogation. LP-Bridge is currently handling 4 different programs at the same time. DXLabs Commander, N3FJP, VE7CC, NaP3 It's been 6hrs with no crash, maybe everyone is on the same page now. Sorry for the bandwidth, feel free to use your delete key ;-) sm On 12/28/2013 9:49 PM, Larry Phipps wrote: The AI boxes in LP-Bridge have nothing to do with the AI mode of the K3. As far as DXLabs goes, many users run it with LP-Bridge, but there are so many hardware and software variables between stations that it's hard to make direct comparisons. [Elecraft] XG50 3D Printed Case
I got a 3D printer a month ago and am loving making stuff for all the various ham projects. I built one for my XG50 and it turned out great. I can share the stencil if anyone wants but its nothing special really.
