[Elecraft] EU - K3 Kit Exemption

EU regulations exempt kits of components to be assembled by radio amateurs

It is my understanding that Kits cannot be CE marked as they could be
constructed differentially (modified or not following the manual) by whoever
constructs them. CE approved factory produced product are all built to the same
standard(s).

Mine came as a kit of Amateur Radio Parts”.

[Elecraft] [K2] Assembly question

2014-04-26 Thread Randy Moore
I'm assembling K2 #7193 for a friend. L5 is specified as a 33 uH RF choke
(ORG-ORG-BLK). The closest RFC I can find in the kit looks to me like
BRN-BRN-BLK. No RFC in the parts list is specified as BRN-BRN-BLK. So the one

May I suggest you ask a female friend to look at it. The color

BRN BRN BLK would be 11uHy, and that is not a standard value.

[Elecraft] KX3: Difficulty performing I.F. image (16 kHz) nulling

2014-04-26 Thread Mark Volstad
I am attempting to perform the opposite sideband and I.F.
image nulling procedure on my KX3, per the app note (rev
A8). I had no trouble performing the opposite-sideband
nulling steps, but have run into a problem in the I.F. image
(16 kHz) nulling procedure on page 5.

Step 7(a) on page 5 states that you should hear a strong
signal. This contradicts step 14 on page 2, which states
Note: If you are preparing to null the RX SHFT=8.0 I.F.
image, you may not hear any signal at this time since the
VFO is offset from the signal source by 16 kHz. In fact, I
am *not* hearing any signal.

Is it safe to assume that step 7(a) on page 5 is incorrect,
and that I can safely proceed without hearing any signal?

Hi Alan,

I think you should go a bit deeper and read the data sub mode and the DSP
bandwidth and have the transmit cursor agree more closely to how the
operator is listening to signals. When I'm operating split in RTTY the last
thing I want to see is a 2.7KHz wide red cursor cluttering up the screen. If
you can't do this then there could be a menu option to adjust the red cursor
width.

Alan Bloom wrote

than assume narrow-FSK as in the old firmware, the new firmware makes
the cursor width equal to the SSB bandwidth.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3: Difficulty performing I.F. image (16 kHz) nulling

2014-04-26 Thread Don Wilhelm

Mark,

Step 7(a) on page 5 is correct. Step 14 on page 2 is also correct.
Page 2 refers to having the signal source and the KX3 set to the same
frequency.
Page 5 requires that the signal source be set 16 kHz lower than the KX3
signal - you will be tuned to the opposite sideband, so the signal may
be weak. Increase the level from the signal source or increase the
preamp gain.

If you cannot hear the opposite sideband signal, it may already have an
optimum setting.

I agree here ... FSK D, AFSK A, and PSK D should show 400, 400 and 100

It would also be very nice if *NORM* would default to 2.8 KHz in DATA A

AFSK A).

Another problem is that the paint colors are actually variable. I can go out

I just happen to be doing the W1 power meter kit and went through the
parts inventory the other night. The 1 percent resistors had a dark turquoise
blue body and this radically changed the colors perceived for the color
coding. Indeed, the same color, Orange, appeared orange on one of the
resistors but almost Tan on another resistor both with the same blue
body.

My recently shipped Elecraft part arrived via USPS in three days time, from
California to New Mexico, via who knows where.

The United States Postal Service is a federal government agency.

The authority for the creation of the Post Office is found in the U.S.
Constitution at Article I, Section 8, which says, in part:

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts
and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general
welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be
uniform throughout the United States…

   To establish post offices and post roads;

Yes, it’s in the same clause that allows Congress to tax us and to raise an
army and a navy.

US Postal Service workers are FEDERAL employees.

The US Congress writes the rules, postal regulations and laws controlling
the Post Office. a postal crime including graffiti on a post office
wallis a FEDERAL CRIME.

The U.S. Postal Service is, by law, an independent establishment of the
executive branch.

The agency doesn't normally use tax dollars for operations, except when it
needs a loan to cover all the unfunded debt, it must, by Congressional act,
get that loan from the US Treasury. The USPS CANNOT borrow money from a
private lender.

The Postal Service has been borrowing billions of dollars from taxpayers in
recent years to make up shortfalls caused by declining mail volumes and a
2006 congressional mandate to prefund retirement health care benefits.

If I destroy a mailbox, it is a federal offense.

If I attack a mail person, it is a federal offense.

If I rob a mail truck, it is a federal offense.

And if your Elecraft part does not arrive in time, and does a 3-times-around
tour of the good ol' USA, it is NOT a federal offense.

73, and enjoy the upcoming Sabbath day where there has NOT been any USPS
mail delivery since 1912.

It all depends on whose Sabbath you are referring to. The USPS still
delivers mail on my Sabbath. There is talk of cutting deliveries to
three days a week, but all that will accomplish is to make larger
per-carrier loads to deliver, necessitating more carrier-hours, which
doesn't save money at all.

I applaud Elecraft's support of the USPS.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2014-04-26 Thread Kevin

Good Evening,
After a week of cold wet weather we have another day of gloom and
downpour. However, the dry season is only a few months away. I may see
more of the sun by late May. With all of this rain late in the season
the trees should do well and not be in too much danger of fire this summer.
Propagation, on the other hand, has been poor to abysmal this week.
I could hear folks but they could never hear me. I checked to see if my
antennas were still up more than once. The sun has been acting up
though and maybe afterward it will cause the ionosphere to be more
highly charged. Who can tell?
What I do know is the grouse are holding much tighter to cover with
the cold and wet weather and when they do flush it can be quite a test
of the adrenal glands. I was reaching under a cedar tree for some
firewood when he (or she) flushed and knocked off my cap. I think they
are testing me.

Please join us tomorrow.

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (6 PM PDT Sunday)

73,
Kevin. KD5ONS
