Re: [Elecraft] Best Mac to use with KX3

2019-01-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Steve,

The only software application specifically for the KX3 is KX3 Utility
which takes very little of the computer resources.

Perhaps a better question is -- "What processing capability is required
for the software applications that I want to run?"

That will determine how powerful a computer you will need - Mac or other OS.

The ’simplest’ approach would be to install the Remote Rig RC-1216H to connect
to the RS-232 connection of the KPA500 which provides a web interface to manage
the KPA500 including controlling power on/off and standby/operate. You get
the same information that is available on the KPA500 front panel. This is how
I control my KPA500 remotely.

See: http://www.remoterig.com/wp/?page_id=1010
. I also use one of these to
remotely control my Green Heron RT-21 rotator.

Ham Radio Outlet is a supplier for these devices.

Hope this helps,

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2019-01-27 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

Conditions were better on both bands.  QSB was everywhere but I was
able to reach farther across the country.  Alberta Clipper was the storm
type.  Dry snow, lots of drifting, followed by deep cold.  Good thing
dry snow insulates so well.  My mother was born in North Dakota so she
knew kids could get along just fine in the cold.  If you burrow into one
of those snow drifts you can stay out in the cold for hours.

Forty meters brought a few very close contacts.  One from the beaches

down again.  Propagation is improving as the sun returns.  I hope the
SFU gets into the 80s again.  Conditions seemed better today even though
it was only at 72.  There is a real sunspot showing.  It sent off a C5
class flare yesterday but it missed the earth.  Maybe on the next pass
its aim will be a little better.

The KX3 is rated for 5 W in full carrier modes like FM and data.

The easiest way to get above 5 W is to get a muffin fan and aim it at the heat
sink.

Re: [Elecraft] Best Mac to use with KX3

2019-01-27 Thread James Bennett via Elecraft
Steve - I normally use an iMac (27”) here in the shack with WSJT-X and in the
past have flip-flopped between a KX3 and my K3. Sold the KX3 and now use a KX2
alternately with the K3. In 2016 I took my KX3 to the southern Philippines
along with a MacBook Pro Retina and used it with WSJT-X. The external audio “
sound card” I use is a Tascam US-125M.

So, what you get will dictate what you’ll need to acquire, if anything. Several
years ago Apple made a change in their OS in how it handles USB-2. Basically
they screwed it up. And they are not inclined to fix it. From that point on
there have been a bazillion Mac users (including myself) that are going along
with digital modes working fine and all of a sudden, the audio starts coming
out the internal speakers instead of the sound card. Numerous work-arounds are
out there - the one I have been very successful with is to change the sampling
rate to 44,000. This issue, from what I’ve heard, does not affect USB-3. If you
get a relatively new Mac and it has USB-3, you’ll probably be OK. My iMac does
not, so I use USB-2 and 99.9% of the time I’m OK. My MacBook Pro does not have
USB-3, but it DOES have a Thunderbolt port. I got a Thunderbolt to USB
converter on Amazon and that took care of this problem on the laptop.

Hope that helps.

p.s. - be sure you’ve got a beefy heatsink on that KX3 if you plan on running
it barefoot at 15 watts on digital. The one that came with my KX3 (serial
number 5539) wasn't up to the task and after a few minutes would fold back to 5
watts. This was prior to FT8 - the JT65 and JT9 modes run for considerably
longer and do cause heat build-up. I eventually got a third-party heat sink and
never had a problem with fold-back afterwards.

Re: [Elecraft] Best Mac to use with KX3

2019-01-27 Thread Bill Frantz
Use the Elecraft USB <--> RS232 with the 3.5mm plug to connect
the KX3 to your computer for firmware updates with the KX3
Utility and for CAT control with various digital mode programs
including wsjt-x. This interface will also allow many logging
programs to automatically read the frequency and mode from the KX3.

BTW, I use RUMlogNG from the Apple App store for logging.
Skookumlogger is also a good contest logger, and can handle
rover mode for VHF contests. Signing /R makes RUMlogNG think you
are operating from Russia.

I have used both a SignaLink and a $4 USB audio interface (from
Amazon) for audio. With the $4 interface, I had to include a pad
to lower the output level of the KX3 so it didn't overload the
microphone input ot the interface.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 remote connection not working.

2019-01-27 Thread John Simmons
Chiming in here... did you try UDP & TCP? I have run into devices that
claim 'only TCP' but required both protocols forwarded to work. Another
idea: use Wireshark on a locally connected PC LAN card interface to
sniff out the protocols and ports that are actually being used by the
KPA. That will tell you for sure. Wireshark is free and there are lots
of resources on the web to help you with it.

Subject: [Elecraft] KPA1500 remote connection not working.

I have updated the firmware to 2.0 and tried to connect using static IP
address. I have 5 static IPv4 addresses that I use for remote connection on my
K3 and K3/O mini. My remote K3/0 connects flawlessly.

However, I have always had a problem connecting to the KPA1500 remotely. I can
sometimes connect local when I am home, but can not remotely connect to the
amp. Remote connection shows it is connected, but I can not see any data sets
or make any changes to the amp during remote. Hence, not truly connected.

The AMP is connected to the internet with a static IP address and “Wakeup ON
LAN Enabled. Also I have port 1500 forwarded in my router.

  I am using KPA 1500 Remote software V. 1.0.22.0

I have contacted Elecraft support several times to get this resolved and
unfortunately, I do not get any response from Elecraft support. I am hoping
someone here has a possible solution.

Another "gotcha" is forgetting to reset the RS232 baud rate.

This bites me after every FD because N1MM is different from my Palstar

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Panadapter - strong sum signals & relays clicking

2019-01-27 Thread Alan
Yes, the P3 automatically bypasses its internal preamp whenever the
input signal level overloads the ADC.  It uses a fairly complicated
algorithm to try to minimize the inconvenience.  The first time the ADC
overloads, the preamp is switched out for a fairly short period of time
and then it is switched back again to see if the overload is still
present.  If so, the preamp is turned off again, but this time for a
longer period.  This continues until eventually the OFF period is quite
long.  (I don't remember the exact time periods.)

It takes quite a strong signal to overload the ADC so most operators
will rarely see this.

The gain of the internal P3 preamp is about 19 dB.  The software is
supposed to take that into account in the display so that signal levels
remain accurate when the preamp is switched out.

On 1/27/19 2:40 AM, Roger wrote:

Hello,

since I worked on 80 and 160 m the last couple of weeks I noticed that the
P3 panadapter starts clicking relays whenever a very strong local signal
(-10 dBm to 0 dBm) or a number of strong signals within the bandpass are
present. I could not find a relation yet when it happens because it takes
place in irregular intervals. I don´t notice this behavior on the upper
bands where signal levels and even the sum signals are not as strong as on
the lowbands. I also don´t notice it if I switch to a nonresonant antenna
and dropping the signal level or terminate the receiver to actually mute it.
So it has to do with the signal level which makes me think it is an
automatic adaption to keep the A/D converter in the dynamic range. It also
seems to have a time constant as it doesn´t switch around quickly but keeps
a certain state until it switches again. The fact that the noise floor on
the screen jumps up by 50 dB or and then drops down again hints to an
automatic adaption mode. Attenuator setting on the radio doesn´t have any
effect.

As I didn´t find any information about this issue in the manual I wonder
whether somebody with a P3 panadapter could confirm (or not) whether he/she
experiences the same thing. It was quite present this morning on 160 m (CQWW
CW 160 m) as the band was filled with 9+++ signals between 1810 and 1900
kHz.
I hear the sharp noise of the relays clicking thru the headphones and it
gives an uncomfortable feeling to hear the relays cycling all the time.
Maybe a future update of the firmware could make the switching process a bit
smoother

The firmware in use is the latest - ver. 1.60

[Elecraft] Best Mac to use with KX3

2019-01-27 Thread Steve Grimaud (Gmail)
I'm trying to find a good new or used Macbook or Mac mini to begin using
with my KX3. I had used a PC with ASUS Xonar U7 and/or Signalink USB.
What will I need to keep, drop or use in a different way to get a Mac
unit working with my KX3? I'm especially interested in digital signals.
Who here knows what works best.

[Elecraft] simple remote control of KPA 500

2019-01-27 Thread Howard Sherer
I have need to have a simple remote control of my KPA 500 for a few weeks.
I would like to be able to remotely power up the amp. It will already be in
the mode to power up in operate mode.

I can only use an Iphone web interface to remotely power on the amp, no
computers on either end. Any suggestions.

I can do this with my RRC interface and K30, but this need if for another
application.

[Elecraft] K2 Systems for Sale -- home downsizing continues

2019-01-27 Thread Dauer, Edward
Many of the previously listed items have been sold. Two K2 systems and a
non-Elecraft QRP rig are still available:

K2/100 (s/n 7687) with KAT100 ATU in the matching low-profile enclosure. The
K2 has the KNB2, KSB2, KAF2, and the 100-watt amp. The amp includes serial
communications equivalent to the KIO2. The complete station, including all
interconnecting and power cables. $1,250.

K2/10 (s/n 7739) with KNB2, KSB2, KAF2, KAT2, and KIO2: $975
KPA100 and KAT100 in EC2 enclosure: $600
Both units purchased together, including all connecting cables: $1,450
This is the “twins” configuration. Units have matching tilt stands. For sale
separately or together. Anyone buying just the amp and tuner in the EC-2 for
use with an existing K2 should note that their K2 must have a KIO2 serial
interface.

I have one heavy, dimpled knob available for either of the K2s, $50.

And a KD1JV Triband QRP Transceiver with external ATU. Kit built, never
tested. $80

Terms: No Pay Pal. Shipment on receipt of PO MO or bank check. Seller packs,
Buyer pays actual shipment cost via carrier of their choice. CONUS only and
for sale to licensed hams only.

Please contact off line. Tnx,

Ted, KN1CBR

[Elecraft] Last Click Serial Port

2019-01-27 Thread Mike Greenway
Since I have incurred a situation at lest 3 times on my K3S, since it might
help someone I thought I would share some info. On occasion I need to un-cable
the K3S when working an something and like a fool thinking when I put it all
back together it is going to work first time. I do have everything labeled so
I do get everything into the right connector. The problem I have had to arise
several times, once everything is ready to check the, the RS232 serial port
will not communicate.

After a lot of work each time it has turned out to be that the RJ45 connector
for the RS232 jack, even though what appeared to be fully plugged in, pushing
on it there would be a faint “click” signifying it is truly fully seated. From
where I thought I had it fully plugged in to actually being full could not have
been a 64th of an inch if that. Not even sure if there is any further travel I
just hear the faint click. So if you use the RJ45, even though the RJ45
appears to be in fully, if you have com port communication problems to your
computer or cant talk to your P3, see if you hear that faint “last click” in
the RJ45. It is not just my particular K3S, I have seen the same situation on
a second one. 73 Mike K4PI

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 issue

2019-01-27 Thread Dave
Also check the ladder line at the ends for possible breaks.

I had one of the “optimized” G5RV antennas sold by W8AMZ which used solid wire
in the ladder line. Due to flexing in the wind the wire broke where it entered
the epoxyed pvc end cap (SO-239 connector) the plastic jacketing was still in
place so the wire would be fine under 20 watts tune but would arc under high
power.

The fix was to rebuild the antenna using copper clad stranded ladder line.

Jack, I had a similar thing happen and it turned out to be a tree branch had
grown into the antenna path and when on high power the antenna was arcing to
the tree branch. Might not be a tree branch but look for any signs of
possible arching in the antenna, feed line or connectors.

[Elecraft] P3 Panadapter - strong sum signals & relays clicking

2019-01-27 Thread Roger
Hello,

since I worked on 80 and 160 m the last couple of weeks I noticed that the
P3 panadapter starts clicking relays whenever a very strong local signal
