Re: [Elecraft] K1 forward and reverse power indicator
Frank, An external SWR meter will only show you the antenna SWR which will not change no matter what the ATU does. If you want to see that for any antenna and band, you can use the ATU CLS setting which effectively bypasses the ATU and shows you the antenna SWR. The important thing to the transmitter is the tuned SWR which you can see by setting the ATU menu to rx.x which will give you the SWR at the input of the ATU. See the KAT1 manual page 11 for full display capability. Or just trust that the ATU will do its job. I have written in the past about the need for improvement in the NB and NR on my KX3. I would like to see Elecraft come out with a really affective noise reduction unit (can be stand alone). It could combine improved versions of the NB and NR, a phasing unit (like the MFJ 1026-which really works well), and audio filtering. With all the noise on the bands lately, this would be welcomed in the marketplace. As far as the K4, the most common suggestions seem to be to change the color of the display, get a monitor screen / blend the P3 and K3. All front panel issues. While Elecraft has featured the modular approach, I think expanding on this might be the key to pleasing a variety of tastes in a cost efficient way. Have two choices of front panels that tailor the K4 to different displays and knobs vs touchscreen. The transceiver internals could continue to be modularly upgraded (like the K3 to K3S) and the front panels could be made backwards compatible to the K3/K3s in the Elecraft tradition. This would place the upgrades in an affordable price band and could be done incrementally. Re: [Elecraft] New Product and K4 Suggestions.. NO K4!!
This is the best idea so far..Do not come out with a K4..just keep giving us plug-in improvements..No one wants a out dated radio. The big three are just now starting to catch the K3..Sure from a marketing stand point coming out with a new radio is a great idea..more money coming in... I did not buy a K3 for it looks!! I do not like fancy display's or touch screens..I want a top performing radio that I can up-grade myself or send it in to be upgraded..I have a 1440 serial radio..old..no upgrades that I just sent it and spent $3500.00 dollars on..I could have bought a TS890..but I love what I have and I have the best in a old 1440 radio...that is what I love about Elecraft!! 73s Bob W5RG On Monday, March 25, 2019, 10:45:43 PM CDT, Mike Lichtman via Elecraft wrote: In reading the K4 product suggestions posted so far, noise blanker/noise elimination seems to be a common thread. Most hams can afford $1000 to $2000 but not $5000+. 73 Mike KF6KXG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] The case against touch screens
Folks, I'm not an Elecraft transceiver owner and, with the present alternative radio offerings and the current state of the art, I won't be buying a K3 of any flavour. However, I do own a KPA1500 which is nicely designed and built, and performs to expectations. Those expectations are modest in IMD terms when compared with good tube amplifiers but far from the worst of the solid state offerings. An Elecraft K4 with a well-implemented pre-distortion system would likely be a deal maker for me; I'd feel quite positive about finally having a contemporary system matching my classic Collins station in cleanliness. Personally, I'm no great fan of touch screens having used them a lot in general aviation and with other amateur radios, including the IC7300 mentioned by the previous poster. I just find the ergonomics fiddly and I'm OCD enough to always like my screens sparkling! It's a personal choice, of course. I also agree that a wideband baseband output (e.g I/Q) to ancillary devices and computers hosting a variety of open-source and propriety applications is a must-have. 73, Peter (VK6HP). [Elecraft] K1 forward and reverse power indicator
So getting used to my new to me K1. I am lucky to have the ATU internally (and am looking for the NB board!) but have a question for the folks that have one of these. How do you see your reverse power in the field? Do you use an external SWR meter? is there a way to get some LEDs out that can show you that you have a 1:1 after the ATU does it’s job? Am I missing something in the set-up. The K1 sounds amazingly like my K2 in CW sound, love the radio. Re: [Elecraft] Will there be a K4
Hi Eric, I own an early K3, early KAT500, early KPA500, and early KPA1500. Each a great product with great documentation and customer support. I now also own a FLEX 6600. SDR is the future of radio. The P3 just is not state of the art, and it's poor value for its cost. Its shortcomings are numerous and known. The Flex has DAX which vastly decreases the complexity of connectivity and keeps ports organized. The Flex panafall display puts most controls at your finger tips rather than buried in menus. The Flex exploits other SDR capabilities: Multiple bands can be displayed simultaneously. A single Flex can do SO2R. But the Flex has many shortcomings compared to the K-line: Poor and frequently outdated documentation. Marginal customer service. Features like remote capability, integration with non-Flex software, and SO2R may be more difficult to implement than their ads would lead you to believe. Those lacking networking skills may be at a disadvantage. A great SDR radio with Flex- like capabilities in connectivity and panafall display and function that also has Elecraft quality documentation and customer support would move Elecraft back to leadership in HF radios. I have not been able to part with my K3. We have too much history. But I now operate with my Flex driving the KPA1500. I'd dump the Flex in a heartbeat if a K4 could match or beat Flex functions and maintain Elecraft's current level of documentation and customer service. Re: [Elecraft] Why not a KX4?
The KX3 appeals to the portable operator better than the larger K2. Certainly some upgrades for it would be desirable. But my KX3 replaced a FT-817. Main use is for mobile coupled with KXPA100 and 2m amplifier (I have the 2M module). The other prime use is as a 2m IF for my portable mw station where 1w is sufficient on 2m to drive the 10 GHz transverter. Glad to have IQ I/F for digital modes or spectrum sw run in a laptop. Better freq stability on 6m & 2m would be nice. BTW the KX3 has been used on 2m-eme for DXpeditions where small size matters. Its small enough to pack in my carry-on luggage. 73, Ed - KL7UW -- From: Steve Sergeant To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Why not a KX4?
