Re: [Elecraft] Latest rumors on K4

2019-12-22 Thread Dan Baker
We can wait. None of us wish to flex our K4s back to Elecraft to have items
reattached on the inside that fell off or have modifications made that
could have been caught before shipped.

To Wayne, Eric and the crew. Merry Christmas and happy new year. You have
our blessing to wait as long as needed to ship the K4.

[Elecraft] New K1 Kit

2019-06-06 Thread Dan Baker
With the K1 talk I would like to propose, a thousand of us give a 50%
deposit on a new run. I’m not asking for a redesign, just one with updated
parts so they can resume manufacturing. I don’t see a need for the KX1, we
have a KX2.
A K1 would provide us with a through hole kit. I would not have to invest
the time or expense in building a K2. I could leave it stashed in my
pickup. It’s a fun little radio.

Re: [Elecraft] K4

2018-05-20 Thread Dan Baker
Precisely Dan. I don’t use boat anchors out of the 60s, for the same
reason I don’t own a 60’s TV. I don’t listen to stereos from the 70s, and I
tossed out my 2002 plasma. I am always happy to move forward and forget
living in the past. And as someone commented earlier. If they are working
on a K4 you might see a teaser from Wayne about 2 seconds before they
announce it. Having said that. I think I have had more fun with the KX2
then the KX3. Wayne is on to something rewarding with the minimalist
approach. It’s very satisfying.

I have to agree with the posts noting with disappointment that Elecraft
has not, nor seems to show little interest, in producing a new
competitive desktop radio.? That said, I'm sure they are working on one,
but when produced, the market may be saturated with other manufacturers
radios who have felt the need to get to market quickly.

It doesn't matter that the K3(S) is a truly fine and competitive radio.?
It isn't a matter that the performance ratings of the newer radios are
significantly better (they are not).? It comes down to we who love
technology and wish to be on the cutting edge; to have a unit with the
latest bells and whistles.? The K3(S) for the most part, is technology
over a dozen years old.? To wit, I have grown tired of looking at the
same radio for over 10 years, from my early S/N K3 to a second and newer
radio, a K3S.? Ho, hum.

At the price of newer, competitive radios, trading newer for older or
one radio for another becomes less attractive.? I have already seen in
abundance those who have already discarded the K3(S) in favor of Icom's
or Flex's newer offerings, not only contesters but DXers as well. I have
not yet, but may soon.? Should Elecraft come out with a K4 or whatever,
regardless of it's feature set, they've already lost advantage and way
behind the market.? Of course, we who drink the Elecraft cool-aid will
no doubt purchase.

To those that say "moving on" is unnecessary, I ask how old their
vehicles are?? I buy a new vehicle, not often, but every 5 to 7 years
not because the older car doesn't get me from point A to point B in fine
fashion, but because I just want something more recent with newer or
upgraded options.? How about your cellphone? How many are using one 10
years old?? It's personal preference just like it is for radios.

Dan

Re: [Elecraft] K4

2018-05-18 Thread Dan Baker
Yes a new K4 with integrated pan adapter would be cool. But I would not
expect one anytime soon. The K3S is not going be out done in the near
future. What I would like to see is a 30-watt portable rig. When 5 watts is
not enough, 30 watts often is as good as 100 watts. A small 30 watt rig
would be easier to carry then a KX3 and amp or a K3S. Kind of like the old
SGC 2020. I run my 100-watt rig at 25 watts in the field and it works well
and conserves the battery. I think there is a void in the market currently
for that type of rig. Elecraft could knock it out of the park if they built
one. All of us have a K3, KX3, KX2 that want one. But none of us have what
I just described.

I would like to request we stay on the topic of Elecraft and it's relevance

experiences with the gear. The great wit I have seen here and the
information available. I am not interesting in joining a new group, I would

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 mobile?

2017-04-15 Thread Dan Baker
The very best station on Sirius/XM really destroys the beautiful melodious
sounds and overtones coming from the banjo. It gives it a watery metal
sound. However that does not stop me from listening to it. It is really all
about the content. That's why I can enjoy bluegrass on my iphone or XM
radio. Nothing coming close to listening live music when you are surrounded
by other pickers. So you do not have to bother with finding the perfect
speaker or stereo. They can never reproduce what you hear live. Same thing
with radio. It is all about the content. This is one reason we enjoy CW so
much. The tone sounds like you are in presence of the sending cw operator
coming out of our receivers. It only has to reproduce one tone, it's fairly
narrow and it sounds live. Jim K9YC I am sure you have good term for this.
I don't know what the phenomena is called. Maybe if the speaker was shaped
like a banjo that would be a good place to start to reproduce its sound
however, then you need another one shaped like a dobro and so on. Not
really practical.

*Don't sacrifice your hobby for the right house.*

I occasionally car pool to ham events with a neighbor in his high end
VW. He bought the satellite service, and we sometimes listen to it. It
drops out with foliage and under overpasses. Sound quality is so bad
that it's hard to listen to any form of acoustic music. Perhaps too much
data compression, made worse by any problems with the signal path.

Re: [Elecraft] Help me choose my first HF rig

2017-04-13 Thread Dan Baker
I have to agree. *Get a rig and get on the air.* We have all been through
plenty of rigs. There is no substitute for experience. You have to use them
to lose them. Or keep them. You don't really know that woman until you make
her your own, and get her under your roof. Same with a radio. Don't try
this wife's, it will end you ham career. Any radio you buy from Elecraft
will be a very nice rig, and have a good resale value if you want to try
something different.

Re: [Elecraft] Help me choose my first HF rig

2017-04-12 Thread Dan Baker
I will just add a little as so not repeat anyone else. An integrated pan
adapter into the face of the radio is much better than an external unit.
You see the whole picture at once. An external pan adapter is distracting.
Customer service is valuable to me. I define that as Eric and Wayne showing
up to ham events and being able to speak with them. They work us on the
air. They read the forums and participate. I have seen them take our
suggestions and implement them. Once I mentioned that the opposite ssb
suppression on the KX3 was an issue. Some on the forum down played it.
Wayne contacted me and said he understood and corrected it in a firmware
update. They build products they like to use. That makes products we like
to use.

[Elecraft] The amp I would like to see Elecraft build.

2016-07-31 Thread Dan Baker
Once the FCC removes the 15 dB gain limitation on amateur amplifiers *Petition
for Rule Making* (*RM-11767*
) Then Elecraft can
build us a 12 volt version of the KPA500. That would give us the ability to
run our KX’s as a very effective mobile rig. This would compliment
Elecrafts theme of products much more than a legal limit amp, that really
you can find anywhere.

[Elecraft] Alexloop VS P-Loop

2016-07-12 Thread Dan Baker
Last weekend a friend and I set up a club station at a ham swap. I brought
my Alexloop and he brought his P-Loop. We swapped them around and as you
would expect, we could not tell if one out performed the other. So I will
comment on the most noticeable difference I observed while using them. The
P-Loop has 6:1 reduction tuning. Which means it is not touchy, you slowly
get to the resonate frequency you choose. The Alexloop is 3:1 so you get
there twice as fast which makes it a little touchy. Overall I prefer the
Alexloop because, I can QSY quickly. You get to know it and just by
listening, you can adjust it almost perfectly without transmitting. I have
gotten to the point I can tune it while I spend the VFO and it works great.
The P-Loop works just fine also, you just have to spin the knob a lot more.
The P-loop has a nice enclosure and I think is almost water resistant. It
looks like it is made better. The Alexloop would be easier to use hand held
because it is not as bulky. I think the P-loop is a better value as it is
priced $65 dollars less. They are both nice compact loops. I think a man
should own one of each.

One last thought, When I set up the buddipole as a 20 meter dipole 8 feet
off the ground, it was about the same as the Alexloop. The big difference
is it will take 250 watts, the the Loops are limited to 10 watts CW.

[Elecraft] Battery Pack Mod for the KX3

2016-07-03 Thread Dan Baker
I would like to be able to get rid of the AA cell holders inside the KX3,
and go with a battery pack similar to the KX2. LiFePO4 would be a nice
choice in a battery. For instance, I am very happy with Bioennopower
products, www.bioennopower.com Something similer would be very nice. Wayne
could write the firmware for different battery types to accommodate
charging inside the rig. Then Elecraft could sell us some new parts to make
the mod. I think there are more than a few of us that would appreciate not
having to take AA’s out of the rig. And the added benefits of LiFePO4 are
great.

While working the 160 meter contest of which I enjoyed immensely. I had a

Then I noticed I must have nodded off for a second.

But I believe Eric and Wayne can build you just about anything you are

[Elecraft] Cooler KX Plus Heatsink Install

2015-05-24 Thread Dan Baker
Here is a email I sent to Fred, his company sales and manufactures the
Cooler KX Plus heatsink. For those that are going to install this heatsink,
you may benefit from my experience.

Hi Fred,
My Cooler KX Plus arrived on time Thursday I think it was.
I installed it tonight and all went well. I thought you may be interested
in
my experience. I am sure you have heard this before but here goes.

At the start I tested the threads on my factory assembled unit.
The left side (short black screw) went in fine, The right side would not.
Then I tested the left side with the shiny hex bolt, no problem.

I was prepared to chase the threads on the right side but I did not. This
is because
at a close look I could see the hole was not properly centered.
I opened the case and the black bolt went it fine, then the shiny one did
as well.

Then I simply followed your instructions and installation went very
smoothly.
I am very pleased with the precision fit. You did a very nice job on the
product.
I will highly recommend it.

Only on 160 does it hunt when placed in the manual mode. I am not sure why
since I
am using a 160 loop.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Feature Request

2015-04-03 Thread Dan Baker
I would find it very useful to have a "Lock" button on the tuner, let me
explain.
A "Tap and Hold" on the Tune button would lock the tuning solution in place.
Then another "Tap and Hold" or moving the VFO would unlock it. This would
be very effective at times.

Thank you for your consideration and happy Easter.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 case advice

2014-12-19 Thread Dan Baker
I use a 6X9 Padded Case made by Maxpedition.
http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/6-x-9-Padded-Pouch-13p1211.htm It works
very well for me. It is too big for belt carry. It will easily go inside
or attach to your backpack or go inside your suit case.
It is made very well. Amazon carries them.

[Elecraft] kpa1500?

2014-12-13 Thread Dan Baker
My feature request is for a 500 W mobile version of the KPA500. I think
the Mississippi company is the only one making a 500 watt mobile amp now.
Seems like there is an opportunity to be had. I would gladly donate my
ALS-500 to Wayne and Eric so they could see how not to build one.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 Intermittent VSWR Issues

2014-12-08 Thread Dan Baker
Mine does the same thing all the time, so much that I do not like to using
the tuner any longer.
I confirmed it was tuner in the amp by operating into a dummy load. Its
does it into the dummy load on CW and SSB. I have not said anything,
thinking an update will be pushed out and the problem will disappear. In
the meantime I use the KAT500. Its all to frustrating to be in a QSO and
have it act up. It kind of behaves like the KAT500 did before they upgraded
the firmware. I am sure they will get around to taking care of it.

73, Dan KM6CQ

I've run into several occasions where in mid-CW transmission my KXPA100
(with internal tuner) SWR takes a momentary jump from matched to maybe
3:1. I
see the SWR jump on both the KXPA front panel LEDs and on the KX3 VSWR
display. It lasts for maybe half a second, I hear several clicks of the
relays in the tuner, and them it's back to normal. When normal the SWR is
pretty
much 1:1 on the KX3, and the second green LED lit on the KX3. I've not
seen it happen at the start of a transmission, but rather several
characters
into a CQ or exchange..

In the ARRL 160 contest Saturday night this was happening perhaps once
every 2-3 minutes. I'm using a fairly well matched antenna - not random
wires.
I also encountered this problem on 15 meters when operating from W1AW/8 in
WV in October. In both cases I was running a pretty high CW duty cycle
while running at a pretty good clip. The amp was warm, but the heat sink
air
flow is not blocked.

Any thoughts?

[Elecraft] Bose Companion II Series 3 Speakers

2014-08-01 Thread Dan Baker
I decided to try a pair of the Bose Companion II Series 3 with the KX3.
Right away I noticed the sound had a color to it that is out of context in
the white noise.
I utilized some EQ and not being satisfied with the results,
I put them on the Spectrum Analyser and there it was. They have a 10db peak
at 1.2k
I don't appreciate the accent at that frequency so I will return them. So
that is my experience for what it is worth.

Re: [Elecraft] Need help installing KX3 Frequency Memory Editor Software

2014-07-19 Thread Dan Baker
Okay here is the solution.
I downloaded this file NetFx20SP2_x64.exe from the MS site and it worked.

Thanks for the help. Dan

I have been using this without any trouble on WIN 8.1 Pro then,
I installed a new hard drive, and I can not re install the program.
When I go to install I have a pop up that states. "requires .net framework
2.050727
When I go to install this I get a message that reads "The .NET Framework
4.5 and this update are already installed on your computer."
And then this becomes a circle. I am sure some knows that answer to this. I
would really appreciate some help with this.
My first thought was to uninstall the current version and install and older
version.
As I googled and found a lot of information and warnings
about uninstalling .net framework.
So I need some input on this before I attempt anything and possibly mess up
a fresh Windoze install.
Thank you for your help.
For now, headed out to the park this morning with the KX3 and Alexloop.
Everyone have a great day.

Re: [Elecraft] [KXPA100] Power-on slide switch ?

2014-06-24 Thread Dan Baker
My KXPA100 also has a slide switch. I confirmed that it works properly
however,
when used with the KX3 and "*KX3 to KXPA100 Integrated Adapter Cable"*
The amplifier is powered up and down with the KX3 power button's. So you
will not be sliding the switch.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries

2014-04-23 Thread Dan Baker
My 2 cents.
FedEx ground will leave my shipment on their dock so it does not deliver
early. They need to protect their overnight premium rate.
UPS will take 7 days on a 7 day lane.
USPS, depending on the lane, you may get your priority package ahead of
time. Sometimes overnight depending on the regions. However, USPS does not
make outbound on time for all packages. Partly because some are overlooked,
or they simply do not have the capacity with their contracted carriers.
However, they go everywhere.
IMHO FedEX ground has the best track record for being on time with the
least amount of footprints on my box. And no, I do not work for any of the
above.
