Did you build that module and install it yourself? The LPA circuit in the base K2 seems to operating normally, and your peaking of the BPF confirms that. If you have capability to sweep the 20M/30M LPF section on the KPA100 for insertion loss, that would provide more insight. However, those LPF sections are also inline when the KPA100 is nominally bypassed - it's only the amplifier circuit that is bypassed. If there was a significant problem in the LPF on the KPA100, it would have been evident in your tests on the 10 watt TX power setting. I would check the ALC indication on each band, but set the Power control for 100 watts rather than full clockwise rotation. You could also monitor the ALC voltage on the Control board as you change bands to see if for some reason the ALC control is reducing TX power on 20 meters. There is no band-dependent circuitry in the ALC system, but the SWR forward/reverse power detection circuit on the KPA100 does have a trimmer cap to balance the bridge. It would be unlikely for a resonance condition in the bridge to cause an elevated VRFDET voltage on one band alone, but I am curious if the ALC system is doing something odd on 20 meters only. 73, Mike, K8CN -- Message: 2 Date: Sun, 17 Mar 2024 14:57:11 -0400 From: "Dave New, N8SBE" To: Elecraft Reflector , Elecraft K4 , Main Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft 80M SSB Net Announcement Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Please join us on 3803kHz (NOTE THE NEW FREQUENCY) plus (not minus) QRM (see the Netlogger discussion, below), 9PM ET Sunday (0100Z Monday). Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - can't change antennas on 6 meters
I'd still suspect the config settings, this test just showed that the KAT-500 is doing well mechanically. The tuner is getting a signal from the K3 telling it what band you're on so appears to be limiting your options based on that band. You can repeat the mode/ant test with the radio off, you should get the same results as with the control cables disconnected. In the utility, Edit Configuration, Antenna tab, go through each of the band settings and enable whatever antennas should be available on that band. If you've already done that and it still isn't working right, I don't know where to go next. 73, Dennis NJ6G On 3/21/2023 10:19, JK Hooper wrote: Dennis Thanks for the suggestion. Good test. Re: [Elecraft] The next generation KAT500
I could see the usefulness of this in initial design/installation/adjustment of the physical components, but once your antennas are static what would be the point, except to monitor if something is starting to go amiss? With the VNA in Smith Chart format, how cool would it be to tune the tuner and watch the antenna impedance move toward the center of the Smith Chart? The calibration coefficients of the VNA could be set at the factory and stored in EEPROM since they wouldn't change much over the life of the tuner other than some temperature and aging effects (but even the cal vs. temperature could be pre-measured at the factory). To my knowledge all commercially available tuners simply display the measured SWR as a single number; providing a Smith Chart (or rectangular graph if you wish) swept over frequency would be a quantum leap in the information presented to the user. Re: [Elecraft] Signals wild...signals caged
Your missive is more timely than you could imagine. I can call CQ on FT8 or SSB, not on CW. Sure, my K3 will send a perfect CQ via macro, indistinguishable from any other K3 sending a programmed CQ except the callsign. Problem is when someone comes back to me, if the decoder isn't working perfectly then I can't understand what's being said. That's definitely on me, and I acknowledge that. I'm at 177 DX entities on CW, all through the K3 and either in contests or Dxpeditions. In both cases I know who I'm calling, I know when they come back with my call and signal report, and I know which KPod or N1MM buttons to push to complete the exchange. Conversation? Not if my life depended on it. I'm over 120 countries on FT8/FT4 since Jan 1st and the pickings are getting slim. One JA or PY station is just like the other after a few thousand. With few Dxpeditions on the horizon and CW contests really not my cup of tea, yesterday I reached for the CW materials and plugged the key back in. It's time to do this on my own. Whoever runs across me calling CQ on CW will have heard a rare bird indeed. 73, Dennis NJ6G On 1/28/2021 10:11, Wayne Burdick wrote: If randomly occurring CW signals on our bands are creatures of the wild, then...are FT8 stations the occupants of an urban zoo? But imagine, on a given day, that you've sampled the zoo's exotic offerings, memorized the brochure, bought the t-shirt, and partaken of the sumptuous snack bar. What next? Take a walk on the wild side. Yank the cord and jump off the tram at an unmarked stop. Hop the fence. Work your way down the unpaved trail from the upper mesa to the open savannah, then sit on the ten-foot wall and dangle your feet over the edge. Welcome to the ecosystem of beings who are free to roam. They may be camouflaged, blending into the background. Re: [Elecraft] Shack Equipment Storage
I think what's getting overlooked in many of the replies is the effect of the repeated expansion/contraction cycles of daily operation on the equipment. I'm not discounting the comments about moisture, but this is how we get socketed components slowly working their way out. You might want to open things up occasionally and make sure things are still seated, cables still fully connected etc. This will happen much more frequently in cold winters than in warm summers. 73, Dennis NJ6G On 1/27/2021 07:18, Joseph Shuman via Elecraft wrote: There is a difference between stupidity and ignorance. [Elecraft] Does a K4 need an external sound card for FT8?
This question keeps coming up but, but the answers are either incomplete or confusing. Courtney KD6X asked it again on Jan 3 and has not received an answer. Here's the way I'd like to ask it: I use a West Mountain RIGblaster advantage instead of the sound card in my computer. Why? So that I have the convenience of adjusting TX and RX levels with physical knobs instead of using sliders on a monitor. So how do you set levels with the K4? Does it require fiddling with menus and going through several steps? And like Courtney asked, is there anything else to gained by using an external 24 bit card? -Dennis N6DD ++ Here is the way that Courtney KD6X put it: "Any value in using a Microkeyer III with a K3S or K4D? I have a K3... the best radio I've ever owed in my 50+ year ham life. I'm currently using a US Interface Navigator with it for digital modes. This is now sold as the Time Wave Navigator and has worked really well for me for many years. My understanding is that the K3S and now the incoming K4's have sound cards built-in via the USB port. So perhaps I won't need the Navigator anymore when my K4 eventually arrives. But my question is whether there is still something to be gained using a newer transceiver interface with the K3S or K4? I've been looking at the Microkeyer III with its 24 bit audio processing. Does anyone have any hands-on experience with the Microkeyer III with Elecraft radios? I'm particularly interested if it has a lower noise floor or other features that might not be found in the stock K3S or K4. [Elecraft] K3 band data query
I operate a vertical antenna for 80 & 160M where the bandwidth is such that I need to switch in reactance between the phone and CW portions of each band. I currently do this manually, but am installing vacuum relays for switching remotely. Is there a way the K3, through the data port or whatever, can send a signal when migrating between traditional (or operator defined) phone and CW portions of the band? Antenna matched points on 160 are at 1825 and 1855; 80M are 3520 and 3800. I had considered sensing the K3 mode, but that’s not an acceptable solution. The 160M CW contests can often extend into the traditional phone area and FT8/WSPR often use USB mode in the CW portion. Thoughts? [Elecraft] K4 Remote internet bandwidth requirements
There was a recent thread regarding the internet bandwidth required to support full K4 remote operating requirements. I have operated my K3/K3/0 combo from all corners of the world with mostly good results, but those results are highly dependent on speed, bandwidth and latency. Comparing to my existing K3 station, it would seem the K4 may require more bandwidth given the pan adapter and other data transmitted over the Internet. Is this a reasonable assumption? If so, my question to Elecraft (submitted last year, but never answered) is whether data intensive features could be rolled back or shed in low bandwidth environments. For example, can I turn off the pan adapter functionality if it’s use makes the remote connection unusable. I’d rather have the core radio functions work reliably ... and play radio ... than be QRT because the Internet cannot support full radio functionality. Seems the ability to shed loads would be beneficial. [Elecraft] K3S DSP firmware
This pertains to my K3S, s/n 11770, factory-built. It has worked beautifully since buying it earlier this year, and was doing so when I turned it off and disconnected the antenna for this trip. I also turned off the power supply. However, last night when I tried to use it, upon turning on the radio, it emitted a weird two-tone(ish) beep, and displayed E 000202 and ERR DSE on the screen. Pressing the Band button made the error message change to ERR DVR. There is no hint of the receiver working. The proper response from the manual is to reinstall the DSP firmware. I'm prepared to do that, but since this was seemingly such an odd and sudden problem, I'm wondering if before I take a deep breath and reinstall that firmware, there might be something else I can do or of which I should be aware in doing so. I've updated firmware on my K3 before, but this K3S is just as it came from the factory. [Elecraft] VFO B knob location on K4
I saw the location of the VFO B knob on the K4 at Xenia and at first I was disappointed in that feature. However, since last week I have thought about it and I realized that I do not use the VFO B knob very much. Because I have the sub-RX, if I want to search for where the transmitting stations are located, I send the DX frequency to the B VFO/sub-receiver , and tune the pile up with the A VFO. Also because I use diversity rx on the low bands, I am almost always controlling the radio with the A VFO. I also note that the new FTDX-101 does not have a separate "B" VFO knob but this task is handled by switching between "A" and "B" vFO's. My only concern about the "B" VFO is that I believe that the "B" tuning knob on the K4 is a bit smaller than the "B" tuning knob on the K3. I do the same but use CW mode and reverse-CW. Easier to see difference and more precise adjustments. Dennis K4THE -Original Message- A better method is to tune the receiver to the carrier frequency of the highest WWV frequency you can hear. Then put the receiver in SSB mode and look at the line out audio with a soundcard-based spectrum analyzer such as Spectrum Lab (https://www.qsl.net/dl4yhf/spectra1.html). Check to see if the 500 Hz and 600 Hz tones are correct. If not, adjust the REF CAL to make them right. Be sure to check on both USB and LSB; you may have to split the (usually very small) difference between the two sideband responses. [Elecraft] KX3 power on/off
I received my AX1 and, anxious to try it out, I dug out my KX3 which hadn't been turned on in at least a year and had worked fine prior to storage. The rechargeable AA cells were dead, of course, so I got the charger, turned the rig on, and went to set the charge cycle. The KX3 wouldn't accept the setting so couldn't charge the AA cells. Then I took the batteries out and used just the AC supply. When I plugged it in, the KX3 turned on instantly, without me doing the normal BAND-/ATU TUNE. Operation seemed normal until I tried to turn it off with the normal procedure. When I did that, the screen stayed lit but blank except for a row of 7 asterisks ***. Next, I bought some new precharged AA rechargables. Same thing. Turns on instantly and can't turn it off. Finally, I performed a reset. This time I could turn the set on *once* with the normal procedure. I knew the reset was going to delete my previous settings, but it also says I don't have an ATU installed when I tried to tune the AX1 (it had tuned fine before the reset). I still couldn't turn the KX3 off, getting the same *** before I pulled the power. All internal connectors seem to be well seated. Any suggestions would be appreciated (before I make it even worse). 73, Dennis, N7DH -- 598 Haley Rd, Kittery Point, ME 0390 USA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

The pre-installed lug does not fit around the ground post. Switch position was appropriate for each band tested. On 20m the internal tuner found a good match wherever I was in the band. That is to be expected as the antenna was designed for 20m with no tuner. On 17m the best match I could get was 3.3:1, and on 15m I got a 1.1:1 match pretty much throughout the band. I don't know what caused the issue on 17m since it worked fine on 20 and 15. On my KX3 the AX1 tuned up fine on all three bands so I don't suspect an issue with the antenna, it must be the K2 tuner although it tunes other antennas well on 17m. Does anyone think the extra cost is worth it in terms of extra tx performance? 73, Dennis, N7DH/1, MM/N7DH Sent from my iPhone __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 antenna selection
Manual/Automatic is not used for overriding antenna selection, it turns on or off the automatic initiation of a tune cycle when high SWR is detected for the antenna that is currently selected. Many users will tune each of their antennas on separate bands using automatic then switch it to manual so that it doesn't attempt to retune that antenna again. 73, Dennis NJ6G On 7/3/2018 08:52, ANDY DURBIN wrote: I have a new KAT500 and am learning how to use it. I cannot manually select the antenna I wish to connect because my Manual selection is overridden by the table selection appropriate for the last transmitted frequency. Why doesn't Manual mode give me full manual control? Why can't I select the antenna I want to receive on without transmitting first? [Elecraft] Advice needed: Remote Station Enhancement
I’ve been remoting my K3, KPA500, KAT500 station via the RemoteRig boxes and K3/0 mini for two years with solid results. Later this year, I want to make several enhancements, including the replacement of the KPA500 and KAT500 with a KPA1500. The amp/tuner should be a fairly straightforward hardware replacement, but it does necessitate a few station changes which I’m not certain how to implement. Let me explain and hopefully the masses have ideas/approaches for consideration. 1. I feed a HyTower vertical (optimized for 40M & 80M) on all bands. Where the driving impedance is close to 50 ohms on 40M & 80 (my bands of interest) there has been no attempt to match the HyTower on other bands. With the KAT500, matching was not a problem and I reduced mismatch losses on the feed line by using hardline from the in-shack tuner to the antenna. When I switch to the KPA1500, operation on the unmatched bands might prove problematic. To address this, I plan to provide switchable matching networks to transform the HyTower drive impedance on each band to something the KPA1500 can match. I can design the required impedance transformation networks, but not sure how to automatically select the various (relay based) impedance networks required for each band. Clearly, I need to grab band data from the K3, but what’s the best hardware to use for this task? BTW, I want to power the KPA1500 ON with the K3, which requires a Y-cable modification, or perhaps one of the N6TV boxes? 2. I want to interface a K9AY RX antenna 4 position switch to some sort of UI that I can access remotely. I can design an electrical interface to the K9AY switch, but controlling and monitoring remotely is the issue. Ideas? 3. I have a Windows computer available at each end of the radio circuit. The only other hardware is a SignalLink used for digital mods. 4. Configuring the station for future antenna enhancements (e.g. SteppIR if we live long enough to see sunspots return!) are great if they come without significant reliability impacts.
