[Elecraft] K3 keyer

2011-12-28 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello,

Excuse me for the little side step

I used to have the CMOS Super Keyer II for more then 20 years I guess and
always had fun using it.

It was the way I learned to paddle.

After I got the K3, the first 2 years I used the internal K3 keyer and it
was doing a good job. It just gave me the same feeling as the CMOS keyer.

Than I bought the Microham MKII and started to use that (internal)keyer.
And right from the beginning it just felt different.

I was obviously very used (or spoiled) with the "dit" memory and couldn't
send proper CW anymore. Lot's of mistakes like WA2KW instead of PA2KW

I did try a lot of CW settings in the router software but I can't get it to
feel the same. There is a DIT memory checkbox but it just doesn't seem to
work or the memory period is shorter then the CMOS keyer and the K3 uses

I told my self to be persistant and learn to coop with the new feeling. But
after 2 years I feel ashame for my "bad" CW. I have to accept that I'm not
going to learn it "the new way" anymore

Can anyone tell me if there is a setting somewhere to solve this which I
overlooked.

Thanks in advance.

[Elecraft] K3 and Remoterig

2011-09-21 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello Wayne,

Good news!

Will it be possible to split TX and RX functionality between the "home"K3
(TX) and the remote K3 (RX) in a setup where the RX controls on the "home"
K3 are used as the frontpanel for the remote K3 ?

Just want to use my second K3 for remote listening.

I notice that if I select mode and set the bandwidth to, say, 1.5
kHz, then rotate the B VFO through the several data modes, upon returning to

[Elecraft] PSK31 Split

2010-05-12 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello

When running Data-Mode and using 31 Bps PSK-D (using the internal CW to PSK
converter) it is not possible to work split with VFO A and B

But Data-Mode using 45 Bps FSK-D split is possible. Did I run into a bug?

I solved this momentarily by using the XIT.

Anyone else having this problem?

[Elecraft] K3 DSP Upgrade

2010-05-09 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
I was one of the early complainers about all kind of artifacts in the

audio. I'm "blessed" with a high Fc in my ears. This revealed that strong
signals and especially AM (which I never do, but when tapping through the
modes it was easy to notice) were "awfull" to listen to (for me).

I used the Heil Proset (1 year old) headphone which gave a too low level of
audio on quiet bands. I was kind of spoiled by the Drake TR7 audio.

I'm very happy with the BIG improvement after the DSP upgrade! No hiss and
no artifacts which bothers me anymore and plenty of audio power now!

It was worthwhile all Elecraft's effort and my money.

[Elecraft] K3 KXV3-RXA Mod

2010-04-08 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello,

On my old KXV3 I installed a small PCB with sticky tape. It was an original
Elecraft mod.

As far as I know this mod was installed to improve isolation of the receive
antenna on the original KXV3 board.

Now I'm installing the KXV3A board I have the next question:

Do I have to install this RXA mod pcb on the new KXV3A board?

[Elecraft] K3 Data PSK 31

2010-03-21 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Just tried working PSK 31 (Data Mode) but can't work split. Used the A>B tap
twice to copy all info to VFO B.

Am I doing something wrong here or did I run into a firmware issue? I did
use the XIT, which works.

I used the paddles to generate PSK.

[Elecraft] K3 and MicroKeyer MKII

2009-12-20 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
I'm trying to connect my K3 to the MicroHam MKII.

I'm struggling already for two weeks now to let the MKII to stop putting my
K3 into TX mode (unwillingly).

When I switch on the K3 and the MKII (both on a different power supply)
nothing goes wrong so far.

But as soon as the router is started, it starts to put the K3 in "pulsed" TX
(each +/- 1.5 sec a TX pulse)

If I pull the CAT (DB-9) cable from the K3, it stops.

I got the idea that there was some relation between TX pulsing and polling
the K3 for info

I did contact MicroHam support, did get prompt answers, but it's still not
solved (yet).

When I delete the device and create a new one (PORTS tab - SET - and select
the K3) the problem is gone.

I did set the communication speed at 4800 Baud as suggested by MicroHam
support.

I have no other application running which generates audio and might
interfere with the MKII (I think..)

I'm really puzzled.

I thought I might give it a try here.

If you feel it's OT, contact me direct.

[Elecraft] K3 : Unstable freq during TX

2009-11-15 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello,

This evening I was warned by a friend that my signal sounded like an old
"Russian" station (sri guys), "tjouping" (I really don't know what other
word to use)

Details:

Release 3.14 / 2.16

Split operation (calling TX3A)

Sub RX OFF

RX 10.114,20 Mc

TX 10.118,38 Mc

Amplifier switched off,

Running 80 W

I used my second K3 to listen to my own signal.

During transmitting (10.118) I turned the Main RX dial and when moving away
from 10.114 the effect disappeared gradually. When moved 5Kc up or down it
was gone.

Any clue?

Just for this situation it's not a blessing to hear that high.

Evert,

There's a small LPF board in betatest phase which cuts off anything above
K3's passband.
May be you can ask Elecraft to test a sample.
Especially people with good hearing (congrats, you are an exeption nowadays
:-) can benefit form this board. It's a 24db/oct chebychev with low noise
opamp that doesnt have any coloration in-passband.

As a quick solution you could also try 2 elco's over the HP outputs, I tried
4,7 or 10uF.
This will give a 6db/oct roll off.

I've read the LPF filterboard might become generally available someday for
people wishing to clear the above-passband products.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft

2009-11-08 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hi Tom,

--- Good headphones designed for communications shouldn't even go that
high. ---

May be you are (should be) correct. But my Heil Pro does as I do hear these
high tones coming through.

Just an example; when using SSB (MON =2) 30% of the time I clearly hear a
"tune" of high frequency (must be somewhere around 16 Kc if I compare it
with the line transformers in old TV sets) when in TX mode. It looks like a
lottery when pushing the PTT, it's there or not.

In an earlier message (must be months ago) I stated that I do hear high
frequency components on each signal (SSB and CW) which is above S3 and they
are related to the signals received.
The high component which I'm talking about can't be influenced (volume and
tone) by the RX-EQ so it looks like an uncontrolled side-effect.

So my conclusion;
It's either coming from the K3 and totally independent from the headphones
used, or it's the combination K3 - Heil Pro set, or it's an oscillation
between my ears initiated by lids on the band (don't take the last one to
serious).

(un)fortunately most hams can't hear above 10 Kc if we look at the average
age and the given statistics. So they won't notice these artifacts.

Yes I do have an old headphone (no mic included) from Telex which doesn't
produce or show this effect. Either the combi K3 - Telex doesn't generate
the high frequency components or the Telex isn't able to make it audible.

With this knowledge, and your question about the Heil I can do two things:
Say nothing or warn you just in case you are able to hear above 10 Kc.

BTW
Let me be clear, I do have 2 K3's, (SN0812 & SN2185, both have the same
issue) but I'm still very happy with them! Receiver performance and audio
are the most important points for me, not the bells and the whistles. I hope
this audio issue will be solved once and the K3 will be perfect (for me).
Some issues will be solved, some never. Nothing is perfect, but the K3 comes
close.

Do whatever you like with this information, it is just my experience and
opinion

[Elecraft] K3 SUBRX

2009-09-15 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
I have my K3 loaded with KRX3, KXV3 and KAT3.

The AUX-RF BNC is used for the Sub-RX and connected to the RX antenna

Diversity receiving with the K9AY and the main antenna works fine.

I don't want to use ANT2 on the KAT3 for receiving antenna's as I might
accidentally switch the TX to the receive antenna causing damage.

How can I use the Sub-RX connected to the receive antenna on the AUX-RF port
and have the audio of the Sub-RX in both ears (without hearing the main
receiver)?

Evert,

You inadvertently switched to USB. The way to do it by intent is to
hold ALT (yes, the MODE down button (you must have tapped for longer
than a tap).

Only one of the sidebands is shown for any one band - same way for CW
and DATA modes - if you want to change to the opposite sideband, hold
ALT - the K3 remembers that setting per band, per VFO.

Be sure the width of the FM filter at FL1 is displayed as 13.0 kHz.

[Elecraft] K3 TX FM

2009-07-30 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello,

It looks like I'm not able to get RF power out on either ANT1 (28 Mc) and
KXV3 (XVRT-OUT) in FM Mode.

Receiving seems to be OK.

With the K3-Utility I enabled FM at FL1 position. FL1 is the KFL3B-FM and
set a dot at TX-FM.

K3-SN0812 (with FM and KXV options)

K3-utility 1.2.1.6

Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] ERR PL1

2009-07-05 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello,

As temperature rises (in the shack), FP (34 degC) does, and a problem
popped up; ERR PL1.

I did check the PLL voltage. PLL1 = 7.5 (which seems to be the limit I
guess), PLL2 = 3.5 (Sub-RX) at 28 Mc and FP 34 degC

When FP was 22 degC: PLL1 = 3.8 and PLL2 = 3.4.

After recalibration of the VCO, is gives E00272 / ERR VCO. 28Mc not useable
anymore and an unstable PLL1 Voltage. Even 24 Mc needs about a second to
give a go-ahead.

I did open the K3 as to check connections of all the coaxial
interconnection. No effect (after warming up again).

It looks like PLL1 is very unstable in relation to the FP temperature and
PLL2 much less.

I do have a second K3 and see PLL1 at 7.3 on 28Mc (coming anxiously close to
7.5).

Anyone a clue where to look or what to do?

[Elecraft] K144XV

Great news about the K144XV!

I just wonder if the K144XV has the possibility to "separate" the RX input

(A lot of VHF Dx-ers use only 1 relay, the one in top of the tower, where
the preamp is installed as well.)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio

2009-04-06 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Bill,

Thanks for support.
Unfortunately I do have to disappoint you about the suggestions.
I tried, but absolutely no effect when changing the RX-EQ setting.
Even when 2.4 and 1.6 were set at -16, it did not have any effect.
Except when the original audio signal became weaker due to the lowered
cut-off of the high side of the pass-band, the "hiss" became less as well.
This is already what I stated before, the level of hiss only seems to be
influenced by the audio level.

May be I introduced a misunderstanding when using the word hiss. As it seems
almost impossible for me to explain what I hear, it gave me the idea that
the word "hiss" may be not the right word for the phenomena I wont to share
we you. But I'm not able to make it clearer then I tried so far.

I can also say that it is not a pure additional sidetone but it's a
combination of several components.

I suspect Jack has identified Evert's problem. The 3.9 kHz artifact should
sound exactly as Evert describes. To check, Evert could try setting RX EQ 8
(3.2 kHz) to -16. If this reduces the sound he's hearing, it should prove
that the 3.9 kHz artifact is causing his problem.

You should not have any reduction in intelligibility for SSB contests by
setting RX EQ 8 as above. For CW, I normally set RX EQ 1-2 and 5-8 at -16
dB, since I normally use a 300-440 Hz pitch.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio

2009-04-05 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hi Don,

It is definitely not band-noise what I'm talking about.
You need a decent signal level (audio strength) to hear it.
For me, I'm quite sure it has to do with the digitalization. That sound is
far from natural and is ADDITIONAL to the normal audio signal. That addition
sounds sharp, metallic, like these "extreme low cost" jingle bell" sounds in
all kind of gifts (sorry for the comparison between these two). But it is
"next" to the normal signal and many db's down. That's why I called it the
silver line around the cloud in the beginning.
The normal signal sounds OK, not as "comfortable" like my TR7 audio but very
good for normal use as we do (at least for me). I just would like to get rid
of this higher freq component which doesn't like to be influenced by
whatever control except the power and volume button :-) .

I've got 2 K3's and they both give me the same result.
I played with all kind of controls (RX-EQ, AGC-SLP/THR, AGC-S/F, AGC ON/OFF)
and there is no difference whatsoever!

I apologize for being persistent in this.

My conclusion from that is the "hissy" sound is not from the K3 internal

Re: [Elecraft] My K3's hissy and noisy audio

2009-04-05 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello Jack,

Thanks for all info. I played around a while with the IF_BW controls.
The problem is that the level and sound of the high hiss, isn't depending on
the IF BW. I just tried 50 Hz BW on CW and listening to a stronger signal. I
still hear the same hiss with the same strength and "sound". I also tried
RX-EQ settings. It seems that there is no way, with the exception of the
volume, that I can influence the hiss.

I did blame the "bad audio of the K3". That conclusion is to fast and it
might well be something else (bad headset or even a bad operator). We'll
have to wait and see if someone can help me (us) out.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] My K3's hissy and noisy audio

I felt the same thing when I first started using my K3. As I started
learning how to adjust the IF filter controls I found that as the
bandwidth became more optimum I was also able to cut out the super
highs and lows. The K3 can give you a really wide audio frequency
spectrum if you want to hear it. But I have found that for SSB a low
cut of 350 to 450 Hz coupled with a high cut of around 1.75 KHz
provides a very good audio range that does not fatigue my ears. For
contesting I narrow it down even more and still have very copiable
reception.

For CW I vary the width to give similar results, but much more narrow
bandwidth. Hearing high or very low pitched sounds can tire your ears
quickly. My K3 does a great job of eliminating those while still
allowing me to hear what I need. While I am used to closing down the
bandwidth to limit what I hear, the other two hams in my family are
not. Both KB4TGE and KG6YMN have had no problems at all with the
narrow bandwidths. Both are definitely not in the contester category
(yet)...

As others have noted on the list, it seems to be best to adjust the
high and low cuts for SSB, while adjusting the IF bandwidth for CW.
The latter varies the IF frequency, while the high/low cut does not.

And, for the record, my K3 has the stock 2.7 KHz 5-pole filter along
with a 500 Hz 5-pole filter. I use a Heil Proset headset with HC-4 mic
element. I don't yet feel the need for other filters, although I am
sure that will change as the gift-giving season (Christmas, birthday,
etc) approaches and the above-mentioned hams start asking what I might
like... ;-)

The environment of Silicon Valley is very RF-intensive. As one would
expect of a high-technology area, there are a lot of hams, and
contesters, in close proximity. I have found that the best setup for
my K3 in a contest is to run with attenuation ON, preamp OFF, and as
narrow bandwidth as possible. With this combination, I am actually
getting back to not having headaches at the end of a long contest. The
K3 has definitely improved my contest enjoyment.

I think the message here is to experiment with the radio to get what
you want and need from it. It shouldn't be giving you headaches or
extraneous noise unless you really want it to. Once you learn the
magic combination for your operation you should have very enjoyable
operation.

Those that have complained about hissy and noisy audio all have one thing in

commonAll 3 are in the Netherlands.
Could there be some common thread among residences in this region that

I think there is nothing wrong with your K3.

About a week ago I reported the "bad" audio quality of the K3 but especially
*in combination* with the (latest version of) Heil Proset headset. I guess
that the wider freq-response of this headset is showing high "spurious"
signals which are definitely direct related to the base band audio (100-3000

I'm right now at the point of testing with an audio analyzing software tool
and will report.

The question now is, what can we do about it?

[Elecraft] K3 <> Hiel Proset

2009-03-22 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello,

As this question is about peripherals, I don't know if it is allowed to, but
I give it a try. (if not let me know).

I bought (locally) a Heil-Proset with the HC4 element to use in combi with
the K3.

I used to have a 20 year old Telex (very tiny headphone, mono wired and no
microphone). I'm still very happy with it as its designed for
telecommunications use.

But with the KRX3 installed, it's time for the stereo set.

When I listen to stronger stations (more volume) it sounds like "clouds with
a silver line" where the silver line is a very distorted high frequency
product of the signal I'm listening to.

It's annoying and tiring. What can it be? Has this something to do with the
AF distortion in the K3 (SN0812 and SN2185, FW 2.78 / D1 1.98, D2 1.98 and
both the same effect) as was discussed earlier on the reflector.

Any idea?

Later tonight I'll get my Drake TR7 running again and see if the effect is
also there (I just guess not).

Thanks in advance

[Elecraft] K3 KRX3 ANT

I do have KAT3 and KXV3 installed.

I do have a separate RX antenna for the low bands.

I want to use the SUB-RX on the higher bands together with the main RX with
the same antenna and accept an increase of the NF by 3 dB.

Do I need the AUX RF BNC installed?

[Elecraft] K3 CW/MIC problems

2009-03-02 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello,

This weekend I found some time to connect my Micro-Keyer II to the K3.

After playing around a while with the software (try and error method) I
ended up with an K3 not doing what I want.

I thought that the MKII was causing the problem so I disconnected everything
except the paddle, power-supply, antenna, and microphone.

The results are:

1) Only the CW side-tone monitor is there but no output at all and sounds
like running QSK

2) On SSB I do have full output but it looks like if my Mic-Gain and
Compression are both at level "100" if I look to the internal power-meter.

I did a quick check on several config items, but didn't see anything
strange.

Please has any body a clue?

Is it possible to copy all user parameters from one K3 to another (except
calibration parameters off course)?

Are you sure you are engaging FSK-D rather than FSK-A? Also, if you are

internal keyer. I've been working RTTY split, using paddle input, with no

[Elecraft] KPA3 Power calibration

2009-02-13 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Just a question about the power calibration of the K3as the procedure is not
clear to me.

1) Select 160 m.

2) Set the power knob to 5W (on the K3-LCD display)

3) Set the K3 in Tune

4) Measure the output power with an external power meter (I'm using a
LP100) into a 50 Ohm dummy (using a professional one).

And now: What to do if I have a difference between the commanded (5W) output
and the measured output (say 7W) ???

Thanks in advance.

This is the only proper way for serious VHF stations. Use your feedback

Lance,

It has already been thought of and included in the K3 - see below.

I am not sure if you are referring to the KEY OUT jack on the back of
the K3 or the PTT jack.
The PTT jack is an input - one would plug the footswitch into it, or
alternately use the PTT on the microphone or the PTT from the RS-232 input.
KEY OUT becomes active as soon as the PTT is activated - there is also a
KEYOUT-LP signal on the ACC connector that acts the same as the KEY OUT
jack except with a limit of 10 ma.

The K3 normally transmits RF after the KEY OUT is active by the amount
of time entered into the CONFIG menu TX DLY parameter - that provides a
maximum of 20 ms RF delay.

For those who need more time that that, there is the TX INH function
that can be configured for pin 7 of the ACC connector - it can be
configured for either TX INH LO=Inh or HI=Inh. This signal will prevent
the K3 from transmitting RF until the inhibit signal goes away. See the
K3 Owner's manual page 19.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 sensitivity + preamp: looking for wisdom

2008-12-15 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello Doug,

Here some basics about preamps. I will try to make it short, but I could
expand to pages

A preamp only makes sense if the noise-figure (NF) of the preamp is better
than the NF of the normal input stage (usually the normal frontend input).
Each stage in a receiver (frontend, mixer, pads, amplifiers and buffers)
adds his internal noise to the combination of signal and noise injected into
that stage. If the noise-figure (NF) of the first stage is better then the
NF of the following stage, the amplification factor of the first stage is
determining if, and how much, the S/N ratio becomes better (or not). So, to
stay with your words: The preamp is not some kind of intelligent amplifier
selecting signal out of the noise but it should present a better signal to
noise ratio to the next stage because it adds less internal (thermal) noise
to the signal than the following stage.

The best result in signal to noise ratio is coming out of your antenna
connector (at the antenna) everything done after, is worsening the
situation. The first decrease in S/N ration is due to attenuation of the
coaxial cable. So the best place to put the preamp is at the antenna so the
signal + antenna noise is amplified to a "maximum" level. The amount of
noise added by the preamp and coaxial cable is only relative small compared
to the amplified antenna signal.

A preamp has got 1 big disadvantage: it decreases the dynamic range of the
original receiver setup (with about the same number of dB's as the gain of
the pre-amplifier).

The best solution whatever is a frontend that has to little gain of it's own
but a relative low NF (let's say 3 dB) and capable of handling BIG signals.
A separate preamp that has a NF of 0,5 dB and a gain of 13 dB would be good
enough to have a good overall performance (low NF and not too much gain
before the first mixer stage).

Most preamps in HF equipment are TOTALLY useless and only worsening the
situation (but looks good on your S-meter). The discussion about the need
for a low NF preamp on HF is easy for me: The less noise the preamp adds
from itself (and so worsening the S/N ratio) the better it is. The effect of
a low noise preamp is lessening when the atmospheric noise is higher, but
the effect will never be zero!

On low band the atmospheric noise is high and local signals very strong and
so stressing the dynamic range of the receiver. On these bands it's
sometimes better to switch the preamp off.

Hi...

The following request for information is not specific to the K3 (or
even to Elecraft). Please craft your response to be generic.

Despite being an active ham/contester for over 40 continuous years
(but not being an ee), I just do not understand how a "preamp" works.
It is not a "smart" device, so how does it "know" to amplify the
signal and not the noise? I first used a preamp way back when
(1960's) when I was a teenager...it was an Ameco job. It was more
"fun" than useful, because I could give out "big" S meter reports.

Later, when listening in the noise became more important to my style
of operation, I never could notice a difference between putting the
preamp "on" and just turning up the volume (many rigs with built-in
preamps too). Sometimes, turning up the AF gain worked better.

So...HOW does a preamp help to "bring a signal out of the noise"
without the use of some fancy computer algorithms backed by lots of
computing power? Further, does a preamp really "improve" sensitivity?
I have yet to find a signal that I could not copy (or hear) with any
preamp "on" vs increasing the AF gain. PS...I am talking about HF. I
know that lots of guys use a preamp on 160m with their beverages, so
the effect must be real...right? HOW does a "dumb" device do it?

[Elecraft] K3 CW mode and key-out

2008-12-14 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
After the latest firmware update I noticed that when in CW mode the Key Out
was switching with the Dit's and Dah's which wasn't the case before.

I only could prevent this by switching the VOX on at the front panel. I
guess the older version had automatically the VOX on, but didn't show it on
the display. The CW-delay with the digital potentiometer works as expected
and as before.

BTW: I had the QSK set at SEMI (now and before)

Was this an intentional change?

[Elecraft] K3 / HRD

2008-11-16 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
I'm just in the process of selecting a log program.

For that reason I was testing HRD to communicate with my K3.

I got it working (at the highest speed) through the (K)USB device (from
Prolific). But it's awful slow.

When changing the VFO-freq, it might take more then a minute for HRD to
synchronize.

Any ideas?

I want to use a Micro Keyer 2 (Microham) in the near future, have a logbook
program with integrated DXcluster and Digimode modules.

Any suggestion?

As it is not only a strict K3 question, please mail me directly if you can
help me.

Hi Wim,

There will be a dedicated 6m pre-amp soon available for the K3 (to be
connected between the 'Ant in' and 'Ant out' connectors of the KXV3 option).
I am not sure what the NF will be, but I think they are aiming for a value
around 1 dB or better.

I have the prototype of this pre-amp and that already gives a noticeable
improvement over the stock, build-in pre-amp.

According to Don, W3FPR:

"Mike,

Check the KPA100 manual - during TUNE the power is reduced to 20 watts.
If you need to TUNE at full power, you can either press the TUNE and
DISPLAY buttons together, or rotate the power knob to the power level
desired after the TUNE operation has started.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 /100 RF output varies

2008-06-01 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello Mike,

I've seen similar behavior on my K2 when using it with a transverter and
power amplifier although it wasn't that bad. I was not able to solve the
problem. I did a lot on earthing, wiring or positioning equipment and
antenna direction, but it was consistent.

I'm almost sure that it is RF detection at the selection diode of the power
potentiometer. Turning the power knob CCW to a certain extend would even
INcrease power!

I'm all ears to hear how you solve this.

I was recently testing a refurbished SB-200 I am working on. I am using my
K2 as the exciter, and had issues on all bands with the K2 remember the
power output
requested. I have connected everthing as follows: K2/100>>MFJ-993 Tuner in
bypass to only show power in and SWR on input circuit of amp,
>>SB-200>>LP-100 wattmeter>>1KW dummy load.

When I would advance power output from about 10W or so to 70-90W output in
to amp, when I take the K2 out of tune mode, and re-enter, the power would
be 20W or so until I moved the Power knob a bit, then it would go back to
the 70-90W requested. The K2 and the amp are about a foot apart, but the
cover is off the amp, since I was doing some input circuit adjustments.
Maybe I am getting RF back in to the K2?

Hello,

I'm basically a cw operator, but this morning I heard OH0 on 24 Mc in RTTY.
Well, time to test the K3 features.

After some reading and testing I got it decoding RTTY. I used Data Mode /
AFSK A, 45 Bps / Pitch 915 - 170. I hope this is a correct setting for auto
decoding RTTY.

Then I wanted to TX using my paddle. Whatever I do, I can't get it in TX
mode. I read the instructions on page 31/32 (looks like higher programming
language :-) ) but no success.

OH0 is gone, and I'm left with a question. What do I have to do to get it
TX-ing RTTY from the paddle.

Thanks in advance.

What's the big deal with birdies? Perhaps if you are operating from the
middle of nowhere miles from the nearest computer the bands are actually
quiet unless a real signal is present. Here there are so many unmodulated
carriers and other noises from computers, computer peripherals, cordless
phones, TV set top boxes, burglar alarms and goodness knows what else that
you just get used to them. If some of them were actually generated from
within the K3 I would never know.

I would like to second that request. I still use the CMOS Super Keyer 1
which came after the Accukeyer and it has ACS which I miss when using the K2
and (soon - maybe this weekend - 35% assembled so far) K3. Once you get used
to ACS, it is hard to do without it. The K1EL, NorCal, and PK4 keyers, and
others, have ACS.

(BTW - IMHO - the software implementation of ACS in the Logikeyers, direct
descendants of the CMOS Super Keyer, is not as good as the older,
hardware-only implementation).

Hi,

I am assuming that you are using SSB. For SSB, use the Hi Cut / Lo cut mode
instead and adjust the Hi Cut for lower bandwidth. The Shift / Width mode is
not suitable for SSB since it wants to keep the center frequency constant,
while what you want in almost all cases is simply decreasing the high end of
the passband, keeping the low cut at 300Hz or so. SSB with a low cut of
600Hz sounds extremely bad. For the same reason, I find the XFIL button
unsuitable in SSB mode since it wants to "center" the new filter which again
causes the low cut to be way to high. I still think some of the design
choices for this rig are not optimal for SSB operators.

Hello all,

Today I received the 1.8 Kc 8 pole filter and installed it tonight.

I did the configuration with the software tool used for firmware updates as
well (also performed an update as well).

All went OK, but I do have a feeling something is wrong or my ears/brains
work a little different from the majority (yeh yeh I know...)

When XFil 2.7 is selected together with the DSP at 2.7 Kc, the audio sounds
great. When decreasing the BW with the DSP to 1.8 (but keeping the centre
the same), the hardware filter is switched in at 1.8 Kc DSP setting. During
the decreasing process I'm loosing "information" (Ofcourse!) but my feeling
says too much. When during the decreasing process I also lower the centre
freq, the excessive loss of "information" is compensated. This gives me the
feeling as if the filter isn't centered anymore.

First I thought this might have to do something with the Offset (-0.91 for a
2.7 5 pole filter) but nothing was written on the 1.8 Kc 8 pole filter. I
just tried it, but that didn't compensate the excessive loss.

During a process of decreasing bandwidth while listening to an SSB signal, I
would appreciate if a shift of the centre-freq of the DSP is not required

Any suggestion?

work a little different from the majority (yeh yeh I know...)

I think I might have brushed on past a comment for another Elecrafter
that the fan panel may be flipped (crackle finish side inside). I think
he's right. It looks like the wrong side was up when the panels were

Am I correct?

[Elecraft] VFO A>B

2008-05-05 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello,

When using the button A>B (VFO info transfer) the mode from A is not
transferred to B.

Was that supposed to be so or asked for? Especially now when CW is possible
in SSB mode, you might not notice it when B was on SSB and you quickly want
to transfer CW info to B for split operation.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 FIRMWARE UPDATE: MCU 1.87, DSP 1.69 (Finally!)

2008-05-04 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)

Good day all,

I just uploaded the new firmware version which went smoothly.
After that I had to do some filter settings as I had my FM filter (yes, it
is in slot 1) already installed but it had to be enabled since the FM mode
is available now.

Normal procedure: go to Config, select a filter and tap the modes to set or
disable that particular filter. If you are for instance editing FL3 and tap
FM mode, it switches back to FL1. Be aware of that! I messed up the filter
settings. It would have been better not to be able to select FM mode when in
FL2-FL5 as the FM filter has to be in FL1 position, isn't it?

Now the Q:
Can someone tell if and why listing in CW mode with roofing filter 2.7 Kc
and DSP set to 2.8 and centered sounds so different as when on SSB mode with
the 2,7 Kc roofing filter and the DSP at 2.8 Kc and centered? In this
particular situation (in CW mode) it is impossible to "read" an SSB or LSB
signal as if filters are totally different.

I've got the feeling that this was not the case with the earlier version or
am I wrong?

When the roofing filter is 2.7 why does the DSP still have effect when
changed from 2.7 to 4.0 Kc (no, the roofing filter is not switched
automatically from 2.7 Kc (FL2) to 13.0 Kc (FL1)? At least the display still
says FL2. Are the slopes of the DSP so much steeper?

Is it possible to upload an earlier version?

Thanks, Evert PA2KW

[Elecraft] K3 TCXO calibration

2008-05-01 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)

Good day to all,

First of all:

K3 (812) arrived.
Ordered 21 Nov 2007
Order confirmation 22 april
Sent 24 april
Arrived 28 april
Let's see if reality meets expectations(I'll let you know)

I've finished the building procedure and in the process of calibration.
When calibrating the TCXO (1 ppm) you are told to locate CONFIG:REF CAL
menu.
No problem so far. The next sentence tells me to tap [1] to change the name
to REF xxC. I'm tapping [1], but I'm getting the message "b set".
What am I doing wrong here? (see page 47 right column at the bottom of the
owners manual)

Thanks for replying in advance.

Lenny,

You have the 2.1 kHz filter width installed, and when the BFOs are
properly adjusted, the high frequency corner of the passband will be
close to 2300 Hz.

Order the SSBCAPKT from Elecraft and change the SSB filter width to 2.4
kHz, or even 2.6 kHz.
While you are at it (if you have not already done so), changing the
filter crystals on both the KSB2 board and the K2 RF board will give you
a much better filter - the crystals used in K2 below SN 2560 were not
controlled for motional inductance, and the new crystals are much better.

Don W3FPR

Hi Mike and Lenny,

Using FSK441, don't change the tones (as far as I know you can't).
Just tune in for the RX signal and the DF will show you how to tune in on
your partner. From then on it should be OK.

I tried on our 70 MHz band with my XV-70. The same goes for JT65 as used by
our beacons where I found the tuning very critical.

I thought nothing of this but maybe you have a point.

Some weeks later on, I tried decoding JT65 on 23cm via an Icom IC910 and it
worked fine. It may be the K2 filter but more likely it was just conditions.

Although the tones are as specified, the tones in practice will depend on
your calibration and Doppler shifts. The WSJT program should be able to
decode the signals if they are off frequency. If you know your filter is off
above 2 kHz, it might pay to tune a few 100Hz higher up the band. That way
signals with positive Doppler are more likely to fall in the pass band.

I am not sure the filter phase response is all that important here because
the mode is not phase coherent.

Filter ripple may be a problem on transmit, especially is if is as severe as
3-4 dB. It looks like you are receiving and this might be the cause of less
QSOs. Try and alter the TX audio tone frequency but this time down a bit so
it falls into the SSB pass band. You should not need to alter the filter -
simply change WSJT tones instead.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 and Sequencer

2007-09-23 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hi Tom (and others),

I think Don answered almost complete to your question but
I'd like to elaborate a little on this subject which is unnecessary for and
even unknown by most HF operators.

For serious VHF/UHF operation, it is important to have a system with low
noise figure (typical between NF=0.1 to 0.5 dB). For HF typical NF can be
between 3 to 10 dB. The ONLY way to reach this factor is by putting a preamp
as close as possible to the antenna. Each dB of cable loss, will raise the
NF with the same level and makes especially moonbounce more difficult or
impossible. A preamp in the top of the tower means at least 1 coaxial
(power) relay at the same position. These ralays have to be coaxial, and are
not that fast due to the mechanical construction (bigger distance between
contacts to enable big cross attenuation). Switching times are typical
longer then 20 msec.
To make absolutely sure that the relay has switched over, I (and many more
VHF operators) gets a feedback from the relay itself. Don't forget that all
is outside and vulnerable (cables, connectors etc).

Another issue in sequencing is that many VHF amplifiers are not build with
zero-bias tubes. So the grid voltage has to be raised and stable before
injecting RF at the input.

To overcome this problem and additionally prevent hot switching, a sequencer
is needed and 20 msec is not enough. A complete RX>TX sequence may even need
500 msec.

Here my motivation for an addition/change/option in the K3:

It would be far too much to ask Elecraft to develop and/or integrate a
sequencer. But as the Mic-PTT, external PTT, VOX, Key and/or paddle is
already combined into 1 single TX request (to the central processor) in the
HF-rig which finally puts the TX voltage on the parts needed (8T line) it
would be much more efficient for a small group of Elecraft users if that
signal is made available at one of the acc connectors. A TX-enable signal
from the sequencer to the HF-rig could close the loop or complete the
sequence so to say.

In my opinion it is almost all about software and could be activated only in
the tranverter mode of the K3. A regular HF user won't even notice this
option and therefore there is no need for a special VHF version of the K3.
So why not if it makes the radio interesting for this group.
And don't worry, we will design, build or buy our own sequencers.
There are several thousands of serious VHF/UHF-ers. We are a market
opportunity, not a thread :-). We are not buying Elecraft equipment because
its appearance, but because it works so great and meets our expectations!

It's always good to exchange thoughts about the possible use and features of
Elecraft products. I know the products of DEM but all of them doesn't
prevent the exiter to give RF if one piece of the added hardware isn't
working properly.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 and Sequencer

2007-09-23 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello Ron,

Yes I am.
I raised this issue several month ago during the announcement of the K3.
I did suggest the "Ten-Tec solution" which works fantastic.
Before RF gets out (either from the main antenna or transverter RF-out), the
TX-Request initiated by the PTT/VOX/Key from the K3 (which should be
available on one of it's acc connectors) has to confirmed (TX-Enable) by the
sequencer. Together with the KXV3 board, it would be a fantastic solution to
use this radio for serious VHF/UHF operation.
Either Eric or Wayne (forgot who answered me) put this topic on the
wish-list and promised me to contact me (and others) if and when they decide
to add this option.

I'm most willing to develop a sequencer-board and make it available when the
K3 will have this option integrated.

I do have a homebrew sequencer and audio-interface for using FSK441 and JT65
on 144 Mc together with my homebrew transverter but a "quick and dirty" one.

Let's keep in touch.

73's, Evert PA2KW

_
I think many of us would use the K3 not only on HF but also for VHF
because of the excellent phase noise characteristics and dynamic
range.

As such a sequencer build into the K3 would be ideal to switch the PA
and antenna relays.

Would it be possible to make an option board for this.
This would be a minor task for the CPU, but would be so neat!

I want one, any one else intrested ?

RE: [Elecraft] Delay between key in, key out on XV

2007-08-19 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)

Hi John,

I've been struggling around as well to realize a safe and reliable setup for
the combination K2 / Transverter / Power-Amp / Pre-Amp / Coaxial relay, from
which the last three components in a separate box mounted in top of the
antenna tower.

It is no way safe to use the 8R or 8T voltage as a command line without
positive feedback from your relay as to acknowledge that it has changed
state. So I decided not to make use of that "option".

I designed and built myself an interface box to which the microphone and
paddle-key are connected. By activating the PTT (mic) or the paddle, I first
generate a TX-request which is led to the sequencer. The sequencer takes
care for proper timing and switching of the coaxial relay, preamp and power
amplifier. If all has been switched over, the sequencer gives a
TX-acknowledge which is fed back to the K2 interface and together with the
request puts the PTT or paddle-key through to the K2.

I use the K2 interface as well for proper isolation of audio signals between
auxiliary peripherals like PC / audio-keyer / etc.

There is a "quick & dirty" way of preventing RF injection from the K2 into
your XV system. Use the (drof of) 8R voltage as an input for your sequencer.
Make the timing and switching happen, and use the feedback (TX-acknowledge)
to switch a small coaxial relay which is connected to the RF-out connector
of the K60XV.

Coax-Rel

/--- NC --> 50 Ohm 1W
K2 K60XV RF-out ---/
 --- NO --> to IF-in XV

Just an additional hint:
Make sure that you use the coaxial relay at the antenna side in such a way
that it is in the TX mode when NO voltage is applied. If your cable brakes,
or the power supply fails, the power amp will always see the antenna. If you
use the relay this way, a failure is easily detected as your receiver is
"dead".

73's and Good luck

Evert PA2KW

I've been searching around and I can't seem to locate any information
on whether and how much delay there is between key in (or 8R) and key
out on the XV series transverters. I need an early PTT for my
about-to-be-integrated outboard T/R relays .. I've got a external
sequencer solution, but I got to thinking that if there's at least 50
or 100 ms delay coming out of that I could get rid of the diode on the
key in connector and use the 8R to fire a driver for the T/R relay.
Anyone know?

[Elecraft] PWR control

2007-08-13 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Last weekend I used my K2 in combination with my own designed/build 44 Mc
transvertor for meteor-scatter QSO's. Last week I finished my "audio
interface / sequencer" to give me "isolation between PC and K2 / save my
preamp when running a high power amplifier" respectively. The K2 has the
K60XV option installed to give me a separate RX input and a low power IF
drive (controllable by the front knob) on 28 Mc.

The system worked well except one detail. The drive power was very unstable
which causes the output to change between 250 - 1250 W (even walking around
in the shack gave me these power changes). When TX-ing I had to adjust the
power knob each period (30 sec). It happened many times that I increased the
control knob but power goes went or vise-versa and jumped back again. I used
RF-clamps to see if I could find a "hot spot" but it all looks like direct
pick-up from the K2.

It seems that the power control circuitry is rather HF sensitive (for 144
Mc). The power LED-bar of the K2 (S-meter) showed the change in power
accordingly.

Anybody else with this experience? And a remedy may be (to prevent
re-inventing the wheel)?

[Elecraft] High Cur

2007-05-17 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello,

I do have a K2 and KPA 100 (build-in).

For some reason I do get HiCurr messages on a few band (which I didn't get
before)

I did a test with a dummy (50 Ohm up to 1 Ghz) and a Bird 43 power meter

The result is:

28.500 12,3V / 2,66A 100W+

24.900 12,3V / 2,44A 100W+

21.150 12,2V / 2,46A 100W+

18.100 12,1V / 3,72A 100W+

14.150 12,2V / 3,80A 90W

10.120 12,2V / 3,80A 80W

  7.070 12,4V / 2,26A 100W+

  3.550 12,4V / 1,92A 100W+

  1.825 11,9V / 2,10A 90W

HiCurr parameter was set to 3,80A

Especially 18, 14 and 10 Mc bothers me as there are the currents excessive
in relation to the other bands..

What could be wrong?

Thanks in advance,

fine
for the basic K2, why go to SO239 instead of an N socket for the 100w

Evert,

I believe the sequencing you're describing can be handled by the K3,
but it may take additional firmware. We've added this to the list of
requested features.

The noise blanker has been totally redesigned and is being tested on a
wide variety of noise sources. It is also supplemented by DSP noise
blanking, which will work in some situations that would defy I.F.
blanking. The two in combination (not to mention DSP random noise
reduction), will really shine.

[Elecraft] VHF and NB

2007-04-29 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Good morning,

I first want to congratulate the "crew" with the birth of a new TRCV. I hope
their effort will pay-off one way or another.

For me personally as a serious VHF operator (don't worry, also HF) I did
have two issues with the K2 from which I hope they have been addressed in
the K3.

1) When active on MS (Meteor Scatter) or EME (Moonbounce) you are
running high power amplifiers (I guess) and low-noise preamps. To take full
advantage of the low-noise preamps, they have to be mounted close to the
antenna together with the coaxial relay. To prevent blowing Gas-Fets you
have to have a sequencer. So, switch over the relay, get the Amp in TX mode
and only then after a short while start driving the Amp. As transmitting is
initiated by the transceiver (PTT or Key) the transceiver will just start to
delivering power. The best way to tackle this problem is to make a
TX-Request available on one of the connectors. If the sequencer completed
it's switch-over cycle, the Request has to be Aknowledged (TX-Ack) to the
transceiver. If, like most of you, don't need this option, a connection
between the REQ and AKN would just "short circuit" this feature. (This was
a very practical solution used by Ten-Tec. I had a Paragon for the last 18
years).

2) As could be seen from the reflector, the Noise Blanker of the K2
is/was an issue. I lived in urban areas for several years, and my experience
was that it didn't do what I expected. Now I live in the open field, but
with electric fences. It still doesn't do the job. My Drake TR7 ( I don't
know how they did it) just kills all unwanted signals except the "lids". I
wonder if the NB in the K3 could come close to the TR7-NB. I really hope so!

I really love my K2 with it's extreme good Price/Quality performance. I
think even Elecraft itself won't be able to beat this P/Q factor. But at the
end, we are all like little kids; we want more.. a K3.

[Elecraft] KPA100 power levels

2007-02-07 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hi all,

After one year I prepared the K2 for the upcoming PACC contest. I removed
the KPA100 last year because I wanted to use the K2 as an exiter for my
transverter setup. I removed the K60XV module and put the KPA100 in place. I
found out the the power output is around 70 Watts on all bands (measured
with the power meter of Drake MN2700 and WV4) into a good dummyload. I
recall that I used to have about 100 Watts on all bands. I still use the
same 23 Amp switching power supply and Spinner dummyload.

Is there anyone out there that could give me a suggestion?

Could it be the 4.7 pF capacitor on J15 (pins 1 and 3)

RE: [Elecraft] noiseblanker

2006-09-25 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello Arie,

I can confirm that the noise blanker does not work at all with electric
fence pulses. Unfortunately I experienced that the noise blanker is very
critical to the type of noise. Up to now I did not find any "real life
noise" that could be handled by the NB. I heard several comments that it
should work well with ignition type of noise sources. So I was very
surprised that I could not see any difference with or without the NB when
having troubles with the electric fence. So, you are not the only one having
doubts about this NB.

Guys,

Still building #3612 bit by bit here.

1. Bare K2: no problem.
2. SSB module: disappointment as expected (very low output with my hc-4
element), replaced one resistor (easy mod), now much better.
3. Antenna tuner: Wow, excellent
4. BFO adjustments using Spectrogram: very good results, icing on the
cake (thanks Tom)
5. Built and installed the noiseblanker this weekend, but does it
work?

I tried to test the noisblanker (have an electric fence nearby). It does
not seem to blank noise.
Measured several voltages on several transistors, controller and RF amp.
Nothing really strange except for the current to the agc input of the RF
AMP. I measured the voltage accross RP1 -3/4. With full signal (+40 over
9) 0,2V (connection 4 positive over 3) and with no signal minus 0,1 V (3
positive over 4).
What I would expect (checked the datasheet of the mc1350p) is voltages
of about 0,4V to 0,8V (0,1 mA to 0,2 mA through the 3k9 resistor). I
think the f AMP is faulty (?)

Can anybody verify these results?

Thanks in advance.

[Elecraft] Audio Keying with K2

2006-06-24 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello K2 -users,

I'm the owner of a K2 and for several reason using the Mic input to inject
audio from different sources. For sequencing purposes (VHFsetup :
transverter, Coaxial relay, preamp and Amp). I'm detecting the audio,
generate a TX-request, switch over the complete chain from RX to TX and
finally receive a TX-aknowledge wich is used as the PTT for the K2 on the
mic connector.
For test purposes, the whole chain is left out except the keying audio
detection, TX-REQ > TX-AKN > audio/PTT into the K2.

When keying at 30 WPM I found that the K2 at a certain point stopped
transmitting (into a dummy with 0.5 W output) the injected audio (and
monitored by my Drake TR7) while the PTT is still on and so the surpressed
carrier is still on the air. The only way to get the audio from the Mic
input back on top of the carrier is to stop TX-ing for just a second and
start again. (open and close PTT).
I checked the audio with a Tek-scope but can't see anything strange.

It looks like something is blocked inside of the K2... for some reason at a
"specified" moment

Is there anyone out there who uses CW audio keying? and has some
experiences.

Thanks in advance,

Evert, PA2KW
