[Elecraft] Panadapter with K2?

2010-10-14 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan

I'm finally finishing the build of my K2100W. I started it in 2006 and
built everything except the 100W amp which is what I'm working on now.
Obviously, lots has been going on with Elecraft since I put the
soldering iron down in '06. I'm curious to hear from anyone who has
been using the P3 Panadapter with the K2. I'm thinking that would be a
fun accessory to own. Thanks in advance.

[Elecraft] How Do I Recover From A Hard Reset?

2006-08-26 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan
I am helping a local ham who accidentally did a hard reset on his
K2/100. He has given me his original manuals which have the various
initial calibration settings recorded, but as he did the hard reset
accidentally, he did not write down the settings you are supposed to
keep before you do a hard reset. What is the process I need to follow
in order to set his K2/100 back up? All advice and help is appreciated.

[Elecraft] K2 Frequency Display Problem

2006-06-11 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan
Help! Yesterday, the frequency display on my K2 #5113 stopped
functioning properly. When I turned off the K2 I was on 14185.09. When
I turned the K2 back on later in the day, it read 14063. Now, every
time I turn the radio on, I see 14063 on 20M no matter what frequency I
was on when I turned it off. Same problem on every other band, no
matter what frequency I was on when I turned off the radio, it turns
onto a particular frequency when I turn it back on, for example,
18143.90 on 17, 7241.09 on 40. Any ideas on how to fix this?

[Elecraft] Re: Tokyo Hy-Power Amps?

2006-04-26 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan
I can't comment on the Tokyo Hy-Power amps, but if you are interested in
building your own 100 watt amp, K5OOR has a new group build project
underway for a 5 watts in, 100 watts out amplifier based on a December
'05 QST article called the SuperPacker Pro. Here is the url. to his web
site for more info: http://www.hfprojects.com/newsletter.htm I've
been using a version of the amp based on the QST article with my K2 with
great success. In the interest of full disclosure, I co-authored the
QST article, but the group build is all K5OOR's doing. Those of you who
have built any of K5OOR's projects (the HFPacker amp, the PowerPak, the
Z-Match) know that Virgil does a really nice job and the Superpacker Pro
has a lot more features than the Tokyo Hy-Power amps, including input
overdrive protection.

[Elecraft] Mic Configuration Question Part II

2006-02-20 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I have confirmed that the mic
is wired as per the MH2, including the resistor between pins 1&6. I
have done all of the KSB2 alignments as far I can. I still get a >10
watt carrier when I push the PTT in LSB and USB. In CW when I push the
PTT, I am getting 2 watts as per the setting. Interestingly, when I am
getting the carrier of >10 watts (as measured on a Waters dummy
load/watt meter), the K2 display does not show that I am transmitting.
With the mic connected but using Tune, I am getting proper output and K2
display reading. Same with the mic not connected. Something is very
not right here. Any thoughts?

[Elecraft] Heil Handi Mic Configuration Question

2006-02-19 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan
I am finishing up K2 #5113 and have run into a snag configuring the
microphone on the K2SB2. I am using a Heil Handi Mic HM-IC. Bob Heil
told me to get this mic as he said it would optimize my 706 MKIIG and
the K2. I'm using the Kenwood 8 pin cable for the K2, again per Heil's
recommendation. I've set up the P1 on the K2SB2 for the Kenwood mics
using block jumpers. Setting the K2 power for 2 watts, when I push the
PTT, I'm getting a carrier at over 10 watts out. No modulation when I
speak, just a constant key down carrier at a very high power output.
I'm using a very reliable and accurate Waters analog watt meter. Any
ideas on what I've done wrong and what I need to do to fix this?

[Elecraft] Part 1 Test Failure

2005-11-27 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan
I am currently building my second K2, #5113 (first is #4853). I have

see this kind of problem listed in Troubleshooting. Any suggestions?

RE: [Elecraft] KAT100 Won't Tune When IC706 Also Turned On

2005-08-20 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan
Here is the set up: Two antennas come into the house to an MFJ two position
switch, antenna A and B. A three foot run of RG8X goes to a second MFJ two
position switch, Xcvr A is K2, Xcvr B is IC-706. That's it. I set the antenna
switch to antenna A or B, and then choose which xcvr to use, the K2 or the 706.
When I switch between the xcvrs, one is connected directly to the antenna, and
the other is switched out of line.

Subject: RE: [Elecraft] KAT100 Won't Tune When IC706 Also Turned On

Jonathan,

We need to understand your setup with the new switch included a bit better
before giving a proper answer, but I will 'go out on a limb' and make some
assumptions to see if it provides you with a quick answer.

Where did you put the switch? If it is between the K2/100 and the KAT100,
that would be a reasonable explaination for your problem - the KAT100 must
be connected to the K2 on both the coax and the interconnecting cable to
tune properly (RF must flow during the tune operation). The switch must go
on the antenna side of the KAT100 - and if it is located there and the 706
is connected to the antenna for receive, you will attempt to tune the KAT100
into an open circuit if the K2 TUNE button is pressed.

Another possible answer (guess) is that the 706 is putting DC on the coax
(for use with an external preamp maybe?) and somehow interferes with the
tuner operation.

Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] KAT100 Won't Tune When IC706 Also Turned On

2005-08-20 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan
Any thoughts on this one: Today I hooked up an antenna switch so I could run
the K2/100 and the ICOM 706 and switch between them and use one or the other
when I want to. Both radios run off the same Astron SS-25 power supply. When
I have the 706 turned on and RX only, the KAT100 will not tune 40 or 80 meters.
If I turn off the 706, the KAT100 works perfectly. It tunes all other bands
with the 706 turned on. The 706 is only receiving so I wouldn't think it would
be drawing enough current to effect the K2. Any ideas on this gremlin?

[Elecraft] K2/100 Portable Battery Pak Question

2005-08-02 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan
Does anybody have any experience using the HFProjects Power-Pak with a K2/100?
It is a nice 12v 7ah gel cell with built in trickle charger
(www.hfprojects.com). I wouldn't expect it to power the K2/100 at full 100
Watts, but I'm thinking it would be a good way to have a nice power supply for
camping or traveling and run the k2/100 at 35-50 watts. Please let me know if
anybody has used this successfully.

[Elecraft] Looking for some more "Punch" on SSB and No Hi Cur on 30 M

I've got k2/100 #4856. I've done the C80, C81 mod. Everything checks out
great, except I still get Hi Cur on 30 M and it doesn't seem very robust on 20

[Elecraft] KPA 100 Power Calibration SWR Question

I have just completed the Power Calibration (R26 andf R27) on my KPA100. The

and power output as indicated on my external power meter shows power declining
as the SWR is increasing. I am using an MJF 264 dummy load which is not the
best. Any thoughts? Could I just be seeing a poor load?

[Elecraft] KDSP2 U2 Solder the leads?

2005-05-10 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan
Page 8 of the KDSP2 instructions are very clear about soldering the tab of U2
in order to relieve mechanical stress from the leads of U2 when the KDSP2 PCB
is mounted and the mounting screw tightened. The instructions do not, however,
tell you to solder the leads. This may be obvious to most, but not to this
attorney. I spent some time looking for the instructions to solder the leads.
Not finding it mentioned, I chalked it up to another case of engineers writing

[Elecraft] VCO Oscillator Problems and T5

2005-04-25 Thread Gottlieb, Jonathan

I recently posted a note regarding the fact that I was stuck on the VCO
Oscillator Test (p.60) of my K2, #4856. Don, W3FPR gave me some good
suggestions, but nothing seemed to fix the fact that I couldn't get the
oscillator to oscillate. I replaced Q1 and Q2 and the JFET. Still no
oscillation. Being an attorney, not an engineer, I figured I better bring in a
specialist, so I turned everything over to Andy, WA3LTJ (MSEE and avid builder)
to see if he could get things working. After eliminating all other
possibilities, Andy looked carefully at T5, which turned out to be the problem.
Page 54 of the manual tells you that windings 1-2 will look *similar* to Fig.
6-15. Page 55 says that windings 3-4 must be wound *exactly* like Fig. 6-16.
Being an attorney, I read the manual carefully. I wound 1-2 *similar* to the
picture and 3-4 *exactly* like the picture. Note the difference between
*similar* and *exactly*.

Here is where I went wrong: my T5 windings 1-2 were in the opposite direction
as winding 3-4. If the directions of the two sets of windings are not the same,
then the T5 connections are out of phase and the Oscillator will not oscillate.
After rewinding T5 so that both 1-2 and 3-4 are exactly as pictured in Fig.
6-16, everything is working great. Am I the only one who has had this problem?
(Maybe I'm the only lawyer who has tried to build a K2). I think Elecraft
should include an errata that says *both* windings of T5 must be look exactly
as pictured, or at least make sure the windings start and end in the same
directions.
