Best matches were on 20, 17, and 15 meters but only with 6.4:1 SWR. No match at all on the lower bands. With my two trees, the radiator made for a perfect inverted-L shape. What should I try next? [Elecraft] XV50: Birdie Problem
I have a birdie problem too close for comfort to the 50MHz SSB calling frequency of 50.125. The noise is about 22 dB above the noise floor at it's peak. The noise starts to come into my passband around 50.125.35 and is present for ~ 2 KHz. Here is a spectrogram plot of it taken at 50.126.45: http://n1ese.qrpradio.com/images/birdie.jpg and here is a recording I made as I tune the VFO from 50.125 through 50.128: http://n1ese.qrpradio.com/sounds/50mhzBirdie.mp3 Any ideas how to track down something like this and does it look like a problem internal to my K2 or XV50 or does it sound like it might be external somewhere in the environment around the shack? [Elecraft] K2: VFO stuck on 15M
Weird problem, just switched to 15M and decided to tune around and see if there was any openings when my VFO on 15M locked up. When I switched to 15, it was on 21.070 and as I spun the dial up it stopped on 21.100 and wouldn't change in either direction. Both the display and VFO appear to be locked on this band as the frequency doesn't change as I spin the VFO. Direct frequency entry appears to work but as soon as I touch the dial it jumps back to 21.100. All other bands are working fine, this is only a 15M problem. Any ideas? [Elecraft] Eric or Wayne - Re: XV50: Problem with Errata C-4
Eric or Wayne, could one of you please read my original post below and address it along with a new problem with the Rev. C manual I just found? My emails to [EMAIL PROTECTED] are not being answered. Upon completion of my XV, I found I had extra parts from the 50MHz completion parts package. One of the parts is a pair of ferrite beads. According to the 50 MHz parts list, these beads are supposed to be for L3. However, under the 50 MHz instructions, I was told to install a molded inductor at L3 and this molded inductor is also listed as L3 in the 50 MHz section. Is it safe to assume that the beads should not be used and are legitimate extras. Additionally, I have three extra parts from the "base" parts envelope that I am still investigating. One is a 100K 1/4W resistor and I also have 2 "103" caps. These may be legitimate "extras" however. I was also missing a 56-Ohm resistor from the 50 MHz parts envelope but found a local source and this is no big deal. My biggest gripe though are with these docs. I used to be a technical writer so maybe I am a bit anal with this pet peeve. [Elecraft] XV50: Problem with Errata C-4
I'm trying to build my first XV, an XV50, and I just hit a road block. First, the page number references in the C-4 Errata don't match those in my Rev. C manual. #1 Page 25, Right Column, Second Step: Remove L17 from the list. (The tuning slug for L17 should be left in the inductor). I'm confused by this for a couple reasons. First, page 25 has no reference to L17. In fact, on page 25 you are just wrapping up the front panel assembly. Second, where you are about to install L17 on page 33, there is no mention about removing any of the slugs. It just says to run the cores up and down and then set near the top of the coil. On page 34, you solder them in. So, what am I actually supposed to do with L17? Install it as normal? Then, the next step: #2 Page 25, Right Column, Second Step: After "L10" add "In the XV50, the inductor is a toroid and has no slug". Ok, I think I can figure this out but, again, the page numbers don't match and it actually references the same step as the first item. The page numbers for the remaining steps 3, 4, and 9 also don't seem to make sense but they are alignment issues and I think I can figure them out. I am really becoming disappointed with the quality of Elecraft's documentation of late. I had a number of documentation issues with my Rev. G manual K2 build. Several parts were substituted with different parts and not documented in any type of Errata and there were several formatting issues with the parts tables. Several part numbers were cut off and/or didn't fit in the cells. I had emailed my documentation issues as I found them to Elecraft but I only ever received a reply on one of them. I hope the problems with the documentation aren't signs that Elecraft is too narrowly focused on the K3 at the moment and neglecting current products. Thanks for any help on just what to do with L17. However, every once and awhile it will flicker a number while I am turning C55 but this is inconsistent. Before installing R6, you are to also check U4 pin 1 voltage during tune. I am showing 4.61V at this spot. I have checked, and rechecked T1 multiple times and do not see any problems. I also don't see any cold solder joints. When the kits arrived, I did a quick check against the invoice to make sure I had all my kits but hadn't done an in depth inventory of all the parts in each kit. I do this level of inventory as I build each kit. Happy that I had all kits, I left them in the shipping container and put the box under my desk. Over the past few weeks since receiving the shipment, I reached into the box and pulled out a kit and proceeded to build them one at a time. One of the kits I ordered was the KAT2. This Wednesday morning, I reached into the box to find it, the KAT2, was my last kit. As I unpacked all the parts from the KAT2 into a shallow Tupperware container, I quickly noticed a problem. "Where the heck are my relays?" I said to myself. Frantically, I searched the shipping container.. it was clear there were no relays to be found. At 11:35AM (EST), I sent an email off to Lisa, cc'ing the parts department, explaining my problem. At this time, I hadn't asked her to make it right or anything. I just told her the relays were no where to be found and closed the email with a humble "Please advise.". At 12:59 PM (EST), I have a reply from Lisa saying "Our apologies for the missing relays. I have forwarded your email to our parts department who will get them out to you right away.". I said to myself, that'll be fine, and expected to receive them the middle of next week. However, today, two days later, I walk out to the mailbox to find a Priority Mail envelope from Aptos, CA with all 18 of my missing relays inside. So here it is, now 12:55pm, less than 48 hours (by 4 minutes) from the time Lisa said the parts will be on the way and I have my parts. I am very happy and the slobbering iron is warming up as I finish this email. Tomorrow, FedEx is brining me an XV50 and K60XV so I will have a nice weekend full of slobbering. -- JT Croteau, N1ESE - Manchester, NH (FN42gx) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Best band for low cost DXing?
I too would like to know why 20M wasn't considered by the OP. 20M is a great, easy, and cheap band to get on and make lots of DX contacts especially during a contest weekend. A simple halfwave dipole can be constructed for a very low cost, sometimes free if you scrounge, and work well at 30 to 35'. Most people frown upon contests every weekend but get on the air during a contest and you'll have DXCC in no time flat. -- JT Croteau, N1ESE - Manchester, NH (FN42gx) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KIO2 Daisy Chaining
This may seem like a stupid question but I thought I'd ask before I warm up the slobbering iron. I'm in the process of building my first Elecraft transverter. I'm going to need to modify my existing serial cable for interfacing it to the K2. I'm ultimately planning on interfacing all four transverters along with a KPA100 w/ KAT100 mounted together in an EC2. Can I go ahead and make up the daisy chain KIO2 cable now with all options in mind? Will everything work properly with some of the connectors not connected to anything? I'd much rather build one cable now than having to keep modifying the same cable as I add options. [Elecraft] XV: Coax for interfacing
Well, I took the plunge and bought an unopened XV50 kit along with a K60XV from a user on this reflector. Thanks to all who replied to my previous post. Now, regarding the coax interconnects between the K60XV and XV units. Can I use mini-coax such as RG-316 for these low power interconnects or should I go with something beefier because of the higher frequencies involved especially when I go to add 222 or 432? I'm merely asking because I already have a fair amount of RG-316 on hand including the appropriate BNC connectors. However, I have no problem paying for the right stuff if it is an issue. The XV50, and future XV's will always be located right next to, or under, the K2. [Elecraft] XV50: Building my first XV
Are the Elecraft XV's any more difficult to build than a K2? To my surprise and limited skills, I was able to build my K2 along with several options successfully with only minor difficulties. My soldering job isn't the cleanest in the world but the rig works as spec'd. However, with that said, I could see my soldering improving as I progressed from stage to stage. My biggest problem is feeding too much solder into the joint. I think I need to switch to a smaller diameter solder. I'd like to procure an XV50 around the first week of October. However, this will be cutting it close time wise for it's intended purpose; the 50MHz Sprint on October 20th. [Elecraft] Hey buddy, can you spare a 78L06? (New England/East Coast)
Anyone here in New England, or relatively close by USPS standards, have a spare 78L06 they could throw in the mail to me please? I'll gladly stick a few green backs in the mail for postage and the part. I just pulled a bonehead move while putting together my Elecraft K2 noise blanker and need a replacement. The last time I ordered a spare part from Elecraft, it took 8 days to get here by snail mail. Mouser only wants .28 cents for the part but wants to charge me $6.95 for shipping. I don't really need anything else from them at the moment to justify the cost. Elecraft usually sticks parts like 78L06's on the anti-static pad with microprocessors. However, this time they tricked me and threw it in with all the 2N3906's and put a 2N7000 on the anti-static pad instead. During my hasty inventory process, I must have missed it and installed the 78L06 where the 7000 should have gone. So when it came time to install the 78L06 and all I could find was the 2N7000, I said "damn!". I was almost able to salvage the part but a leg broke on me. I can blame Elecraft all I want but it's my fault 100% for not paying attention and assuming. I think the W1 is next on my list. -- JT Croteau, N1ESE - Manchester, NH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: K2 #6233 Aligned and finished but some questions...
Well, I think I answered my own question. I keep forgetting that the K2 is only rated to 10W output. On 10M with the control set for 10W out, I am showing 10W out with a current draw of 2.56A. -- JT Croteau, N1ESE - Manchester, NH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 #6233 Aligned and finished but some questions...
K2 #6233 is now aligned and mostly completed. With the power knob fully clockwise, I am getting 15.5 to 16W on 80, 40, and 30 meters. However, as I go up in frequency, current drain increases and power out decreases. On 10M, power output is ~12.8W but it is drawing about 3A of current. I know lower power output is usually experienced on 10M but the high current bothers me a bit. Should I be concerned? Hi Mychael. I didn't mean to sound insulting or belittle your service in anyway. However, looking back at the email and thinking about how quickly I wrote it, I can see how it can be construed as such. So please accept my apologies. The incorrect installation of T2 was definitely my fault by pulling the leads too tight. However, had I taken to time to wind and tin the toroids myself, I may have been a bit more patient with their actual installation as well. Who knows though, maybe not. Thanks again. -- JT Croteau, N1ESE - Manchester, NH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Low output during initial TX alignment
Holy cow! I got it to work! It was definitely a improperly tinned green lead on T2. So much for buying pre-wound/tinned 'roids to save me some grief. Heh. Thanks Don. What a relief. Time to button it back up and continue 40M TX alignment. -- JT Croteau, N1ESE - Manchester, NH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I'm not seeing any RF voltage across the dummy load. I am only seeing about 350 mV of DC voltage across the DL1 on key-down. I have just completed the Pre-driver, Driver, and PA signal tracing. Things are very interesting here. Driver voltages are very high, especially the output voltage but the PA Inputs and Detector Input are very low. Pre-Driver Output: 1.841 V (Expected: 0.120 V) Driver Input: 0.355 V (Expected: 0.026 V) Driver Output: 8.04 V (Expected: 1.8 V) PA Input (Q7): 0.030 V (Expected: 0.38 V) PA Input (Q8): 0.002 V (Expected: 0.38 V) RF Detector Input: 0.040 V (Expected: 2.0 V) Does this mean I have a problem between the Driver and PA or do I have a different problem area due the the high output of the Driver? Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Low output during initial TX alignment
Don and others, I just returned from buying a new DMM at RS and I didn't get very far in signal tracing the transmitter before I started getting some strange readings. In my previous email, I mentioned that VPWR was reading high at 4.9V. This can sometimes point to a problem in the RF output detector so I checked all the components here and didn't find anything wrong so, following the instructions, continued on with the signal tracing. Transmit Mixer, Buffer, Band-Pass Filter, T-R Switch section - I am finding some odd voltages here. Voltages that do not match the expected results listed. These are all key-down voltages. Xmit Mixer Output: 0.181 (Expected: 0.016) Buffer Output: 2.05 (Expected: 0.200) Band-Pass Filter Output: 0.444 (Expected: 0.030) T-R Switch #1 Output: 0.439 (Expected: 0.029) I am doing the signal tracing using 40M. Do I need to worry about these? Thanks -- JT Croteau, N1ESE - Manchester, NH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. On 9/4/07, Don Wilhelm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > The quickest and IMHO the easiest way to find the problem is to build up > the RF Probe (the parts were included with your K2 kit). Yeah, I need to go buy a new DMM as I have no way to connect the RF probe to my current DMM. However, I just checked the ALC circuit and found that VPWR is reading high. It is reading 4.9V on pin 2 of U8 (control board) during key down. According to the manual, this indicates a potential problem in the RF detector stage. I'm going to poke around the detector a bit more and see if I can find any problems there. -- JT Croteau, N1ESE - Manchester, NH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 - Low output during initial TX alignment
During the initial TX alignment of my K2, I can't seem to get the output power above 0.2W - it fluctuates between 0.1 and 0.2 and doesn't change as I adjust L1 and L2. I am, however, able to tune L1 and L2 for RX just fine. I am showing 350 mV at my dummy load so some RF seems to be getting through. I don't see any obvious soldering problems and T1 through T4 appear to be wound correctly. I have not done any signal tracing yet but initial voltage check of the driver and finals appear fine. However, I am concerned about the voltage of the drivers collector. It jumps up to 14V at transmit but it's supposed to be 13.3V. I have to go out and buy a new DMM so I can do signal tracing (my cheap DMM has fixed probes and I can't adapt them properly). Any other ideas before I dive into signal tracing? Nope, everything is installed correctly. Bail was a pain to install but I finally got it installed just fine. It isn't off by much but noticeable when sitting flat on the desk. It's probably a 1/16th or 1/32nd shorter in the front but I haven't measured yet so maybe my eyes are playing a trick on me. -- JT Croteau, N1ESE - Manchester, NH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] My K2 is a Low Rider!
"All my friends know the low rider" Seriously. The front of my newly built K2 looks like a hot rod with dropped spindles installed. This thing is seriously slammed down in the weeds. I don't understand it but the rear feet are definitely taller than the front feet. How could I possibly screw up the simple installation of four feet? Has anyone else seen this? [Elecraft] K2 - Wrong Q6 Driver?
I am at the point where I need to install the driver at Q6. The manual states that I should have a 2SC2166 for the driver. However, included with my K2 6233 is a 2SC5739.
