Re: [Elecraft] K3 - operation with the KPA500 and KAT500

2013-09-24 Thread John E. Reiser

Bill, W2BLC,

What is the VSWR of your antenna at 3.965? Is the KAT500 stable with 100
watts? That would be a big clue to what is going on. Any tuner's
power-handling capability decreases as VSWR rises.

The reason I asked the original question is my experience with the KPA500
and KAT500:

KPA500 in the OPER mode.
KAT500 in AUTO (solid on).
K3 set to 25 Watts when running with the amp.
Everything has been well checked over for errors in installation and
setup.

When I QSY between 3970 from 3755 and start talking on LSB - the KPA500
and the KAT500 both go wild. The tuner does not appear to remember that
both frequencies have been "memorized" or is very slow (several seconds)
to make the determination. The tuner will click (relay noise) and the amp
will show RED FAULT (REFL HI) and go to STBY.

Using the above frequencies, when I press the XMIT/TUNE button I get an
immediate RED FAULT (REFL HI) however, the unit does not go into STDY. If
the XMIT is kept on, the RED FAULT will switch off after about 3 or 4
seconds and normal amp output power is noted. I can then talk and all is
fine.

If this is how the combo is supposed to act, so be it - however, it isn't
what I expected. When I purchased the KAT500 and KPA 500, I was under the
impression it would follow me around the bands seamlessly, with only the
VFO touched for QSY

The amp and tuner were factory built - so no chance of errors there. What
am I missing? Or, is this how it is designed and is actually working
"properly?"

Thanks,

Bill W2BLC

[Elecraft] N6BT Antennas

2012-03-17 Thread John E. Reiser
Does anyone know whether Tom, N6BT is still making antennas? Has anyone been
able to contact him recently?

I e-mailed Tom five days ago to order one of his Bravo 7K verticals for my
portable station, as instructed on his web site.

So far, he has not responded.

It may have been mentioned before, because I come late to this thread. But,
I have noticed the same thing while I am in SPLIT mode, not otherwise.

I hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500/K3 pre-set power levels

2011-08-20 Thread John E. Reiser
Hi Len,

I had problems like yours until I upgraded the firmware on the KPA500.
There is actually a pre-beta release 1.11 that fixes these issues. Send an
e-mail to d...@elecraft.com and ask him to send you 1.11.

Also, you should run K# firmware 4.39.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Question re the K3s per band power control

2011-08-14 Thread John E. Reiser
Hi Nels, K1UR,

I agree. It has to be a bug. For it to be intended to work the way it does
with the current firmware is simply illogical.

Being the weekend, I have not heard from anyone at Elecraft yet. But I
expect they will agree with us when they do respond tomorrow.

Thanks for your support.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Question re the K3s per band power control

2011-08-14 Thread John E. Reiser
Many thanks to Fred, K6DGW, Paul, NF8J, Frank,W6NEK, and Tom, W1TXT, who
responded to my post regarding this problem.

They have all concurred that the K3 does not retain the dual power settings
correctly when KPA500 MENU: BAND CHG is set to STBY.

I'm now confident that Elecraft will fix this in a future firmware release.
Accordingly, I wish to end this thread.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Question re the K3s per band power control

2011-08-13 Thread John E. Reiser
Yes, that much works here too.

What doesn't work is setting the KPA500 MENU: BAND CHG to STBY and expecting
that the power out from the K3 will reliably switch to higher power whenever
the amp is in STANDBY mode, both whether invoked by the button on the amp or
by simply changing bands on the K3, and then reliably dropping to an
appropriate lower level whenever the amp is put in OPERATE mode by tapping
the operate/standby button on the amp.

Whew! I got it all into one sentence. With 300+ KPA500s out there, am I
the only one to observe this? Come on guys, can't anyone test this for me
with their setup? How about it W4TV?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Question re the K3s per band power control

2011-08-13 Thread John E. Reiser
Hi Fred, K6DGW,

Many thanks for letting me know that I'm not alone. With over 300 KPA500s
out there, no one else has responded to my post. That made me start to
think that maybe I had missed some necessary setting. (Not really.)

By the way, could someone please send me the url for the KPA500 beta
firmware directory?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Question re the K3s per band power control

2011-08-13 Thread John E. Reiser
Hi Doug VE3MV,

I have noticed a similar anomaly with the per-band power control. I suspect
a bug in the firmware.

I run FW 4.39 on my K3/100 with the AUX cable to the KPA500 (#192) running
FW 1.02. (Where did you find version 1.11?)

I have set the K3 CONFIG:PWR SET to PER BAND, and I have set the KPA500
MENU: AUXBUS to ON, as Richard, WB4VMH and Ken, K3IU have responded to you.
Additionally, I have set the KPA500 MENU: BAND CHG to STBY. This is
supposed to switch the amp to standby after a band change, which it does.

I set two power levels per band. When the amp is on STANDBY, I set 100
watts on the K3. And, when the amp is on OPERATE, I set the power out of
the K3 to whatever it takes to produce 500 watts out from the amp (25 to 31
watts depending on the band).

My expectation is that the power out from the K3 will switch to 100 watts
whenever the amp is in STANDBY mode and then drop to the appropriate lower
level whenever I put the amp in OPERATE mode by tapping the operate/standby
switch on the amp.

This works perfectly as long as I use the switch on the amp to go back and
forth from STANDBY to OPERATE.

*** But, If I change bands on the K3, and the amp automatically goes into
STANDBY mode as a result, as it should because I have set the KPA500 MENU:
BAND CHG to STBY, the dual power switching feature doesn't work. ***

The K3 seems to "remember" the last power level that was set. This anomaly
persists even if you return to the original band and put the amp in OPERATE
mode. This is wrong.

It risks over driving the amp for anyone who reasonably expects a low power
level whenever the amp is in OPERATE mode, and high power whenever the amp
is in STANDBY mode, whether it is invoked by a button tap on the amp or a
band change. I did it twice before I figured out what was happening.
Luckily, there was no damage. Now I don't trust the dual power level
feature. I have to check the power on the K3 whenever I change bands.

I realize that my situation is slightly different from yours Doug. But I
think they are related. I took the time to describe it as best I could
because I have confidence that Elecraft will let me know what I have missed,
or fix this in a future firmware release. Having dual K3 power levels per
band dependent on whether the KPA500 is in STANDBY or OPERATE mode is a
superb feature_ if only I could get it to work properly.

Many thanks to all, and 73,

John, W2GW

Has there been a new Beta release of firmware for the K3 since v. 4.22?

Re: [Elecraft] New versions of K3 and P3 Utilities now available

2010-08-27 Thread John E. Reiser
Hello Elecrafters,

I'm happy to report that I was able to download both the new versions of the K3
and P3 Utilities without any interference from the Norton 360 anti-virus
module. I left Norton turned on today, as an experiment.

Earlier in the week, Norton blocked my download of the previous P3 version. I
had to turn it off before I could complete the download.

Many thanks to Dick Dievendorf for these great utilities!

[Elecraft] P3 Utility Installed Successfuly

2010-08-23 Thread John E. Reiser
Hello Elecrafters,

Thanks to all who helped solve my difficulty with installing the P3 Utility.
The overwhelming consensus was that Norton 360 was being overly protective.
The solution to my problem was therefore to turn off the so called "SONAR"
advanced protection temporarily while doing the P3 Utility install.

What had me stumped was that in all the years that I have used Norton, it had
never gotten in the way of an install, including that of the latest version of
the K3 Utility. This was the first time Norton has given me any problems.

The only explanation I can think of for this is that Norton might have recently
added that troublesome "SONAR" module. I know that Norton does update itself
in the background. From now on, I will know to turn off "SONAR" before doing
installs, which is easily done.

I had an extremely full schedule today, so I was unable to read your responses
to my query until now. Also, I see that Eric has ended this thread, so please
don't respond to this note. My purpose in posting it was merely to let you all
know that the problem is no more.

[Elecraft] P3 Utility (Windows Version 1.3.7.22)

2010-08-23 Thread John E. Reiser
Hello Elecrafters,

I have been trying unsuccessfully to install the P3 Utility (Windows Version
1.3.7.22). My virus protection program, Norton 360, will not allow it.
Norton pops up a message that a serious security breach has occurred. Then I'm
asked to restart my computer.

I tried the install a couple of times on each of two different computers, one
running Windows XP, and the other running Vista. The results were exactly the
same.

I know, I know, turn off the Norton 360. But hold on a minute, Norton 360 is
just doing its job Something is wrong with the way the latest P3 Utility is
coded. Norton 360 has never before objected to any program installations on
these computers, including several versions of the K3 Utility.

I am hoping that the programmer of the P3 Utility reads this and fixes the
problem with the code.

I have received notification that my P3 is about to be shipped, so I need the
Utility to be working on my computer soon.

Many thanks and 73,

John, W2GW

[Elecraft] K3: Remenbering VOX settings by mode?

2010-07-26 Thread John E. Reiser
Hello All.

I would like to know:

Does your K3 remember your VOX settings by mode after a power off-and-on cycle?

If so, what did you have to do to get it to remember the setting.

I know it is possible, but I can't remember how I did it, or find it in the
manual..

Hello everyone,

The problems I was having with my K3, no output in data modes and no KEY OUT,

My face is beet red at the moment. Happily, the K3 survived the rough
treatment, and everything is working fine now.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mods

2010-06-03 Thread John E. Reiser
Hi Wes,

Good thought! I will check this out tomorrow. Maybe the new DSP audio
daughter-board affects the sensitivity of the VOX.

If, not, I'm just hopeful that someone has seen these symptoms before and found
a solution. Otherwise, I will need to take the rig all apart on Saturday to
check that everything is plugged in correctly. I'm pretty sure that it will be
a waste of time, because I am a very careful and experienced builder. I
carefully checked the pins on the various boards and connectors as I plugged
them in. Still, nobody's perfect, so you never can say.

I miss my K3.

Many thanks for your help and VY 73,

John, W2GW

Do you have the Line In (Mic) gain turned up in Data mode? Unlike any
other other rig I've owned, the mic gain affects the VOX sensitivity.

  Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, I did the following mods for my K3 #384, running FW 3.99:

  K3DSPUPGD

K3 Negative ALC and External Band Data Pull-up Mod

  Front Panel Mike Circuit Mod

  IF Buffer Gain Mod.

I was scrupulous about ESD precautions, using a wrist strap and
anti-static mat.

Before the mods, everything worked perfectly.

After the mods, receive seems OK, audio is improved, but I have some
problems on transmit:

  1) Attempting to transmit RTTY with MMTTY now produces no RF output
from the K3. I use AFSK A for RTTY. It seems like I have no T/R switching.
Tune, CW and SSB work correctly and produce the expected output levels.

  2) The K3 does not key up my ACOM 1000 amp on Tune or CW. It keys
the amp OK on SSB when the PTT button on the mike is pressed. It also keys the
amp OK in CW mode if the mike PTT button is held down. I checked that VOX is
enabled for CW. RTTY produces no output from the amp under any circumstances.

I have reloaded FW 3.99, and then went back to version 3.97 (all
files), but the problems remain. I have checked and rechecked and rechecked
all cable connections to the K3 back panel, as well as my CONFIG and MMTTY
settings. Everything looks OK, but I may have missed something. BTW, I don't
use ALC with the amp.

  To summarize the problems:

  1) The K3 produces no output in RTTY

  2) The Key Out jack (for keying the amp) does not function with VOX.

  Any ideas?

  Many thanks and 73,

  John, W2GW

[Elecraft] K3 Mods

2010-06-03 Thread John E. Reiser
Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, I did the following mods for my K3 #384, running FW 3.99:

K3DSPUPGD

K3 Negative ALC and External Band Data Pull-up Mod

Front Panel Mike Circuit Mod

IF Buffer Gain Mod.

I was scrupulous about ESD precautions, using a wrist strap and anti-static mat.

Before the mods, everything worked perfectly.

After the mods, receive seems OK, audio is improved, but I have some problems
on transmit:

1) Attempting to transmit RTTY with MMTTY now produces no RF output from the
K3. I use AFSK A for RTTY. It seems like I have no T/R switching. Tune, CW
and SSB work correctly and produce the expected output levels.

2) The K3 does not key up my ACOM 1000 amp on Tune or CW. It keys the amp OK
on SSB when the PTT button on the mike is pressed. It also keys the amp OK in
CW mode if the mike PTT button is held down. I checked that VOX is enabled for
CW. RTTY produces no output from the amp under any circumstances.

I have reloaded FW 3.99, and then went back to version 3.97 (all files), but
the problems remain. I have checked and rechecked and rechecked all cable
connections to the K3 back panel, as well as my CONFIG and MMTTY settings.
Everything looks OK, but I may have missed something. BTW, I don't use ALC
with the amp.

To summarize the problems:

1) The K3 produces no output in RTTY

2) The Key Out jack (for keying the amp) does not function with VOX.

Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - RTTY on 30 meters

2010-05-18 Thread John E. Reiser
Hi Chen, W7AY,

Exactly right! Thank you!

I knew it had to be something I forgot to set correctly. Will have to
remember that data modes are per-band on the K3.

[Elecraft] K3 - RTTY on 30 meters

2010-05-18 Thread John E. Reiser
Hello out there,

Yesterday a friend asked me to give him a contact on 30-meter RTTY. I had
never been on 30-meter RTTY before, but I agreed to give it a try. But then I
found that my K3 had no RTTY modulation_ just a carrier on 30-meters. The T-R
switching worked fine.

Let me explain that I have been using my K3 without a hitch in RTTY mode for
the past two years on the 20, 15, and 12 meter bands, and it continues to work
fine on those bands.

My K3 is # 384 running FW 3.97/2.58. I simply have two stereo audio cables
connecting the speaker and mike jacks on my notebook computer to the K3's line
in and out jacks. T-R switching is via the K3's RS232 jack and my Keyspan
USB-Serial adapter. My 30-meter antenna is resonant, with 1.2-1 VSWR across
the entire band. RTTY software is MMTTY.

The other odd thing that I observed was that my friend's signal was reversed on
30-meters. That is, I couldn't decode him without invoking the reverse button
in MMTTY. I later had a QSO with him on 20-meter RTTY, and he was not reversed
on that band.

Any ideas?

Many thanks and 73,

John, W2GW

C'mon. Press XIT. Turn the small knob until 2.0 appears in the VFO B area.
There you go!

We don't need an "optional" feature. There are too many already.

Dan, AB3EN,

I don't run W-7, but I had a problem getting LOTW to work with Vista. The
solution was to run it as administrator. (Google "run as administrator").

Just a clue, but it's worth a try.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 NR

2009-08-28 Thread John E. Reiser
I'm running version 3.27/2.25 on K3 #384. I live in a high noise suburb of
NYC. When I tap the NR button, the noise just about disappears, and the
signal remains, SSB or CW. Magic!

The difference is more noticeable on SSB, of course, because I usually have
the pass band set to 500 Hz for CW.

My favorite NR setting is F1-3. I seldom change from that setting anymore.
I don't use EQ.

I operate 90% CW and RTTY. When I do operate SSB, I'm not too concerned
about audio frequency response. If I can understand what the other guy is
saying, I conclude that I've got him tuned in OK.

When I want hi-fi, I get out the IPod_ hi! But, don't be mad at me. That's
just me. I respect all differing opinions. Maybe I'm just not as
discerning as some folks.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 3.04 Power Output After Tune

2009-03-28 Thread John E. Reiser
I'm having a problem of low power output on SSB on 40 meters. Call for 100
watts, get 50 or less peak on LP-100 watt meter.

Reinstalled FW 3.04, calibrated K3 watt meter, calibrated TX GAIN using the
K3 utility and an OHR 100 watt dummy load. Problem remains.

CW output is OK on all bands, albeit a bit on the low side (around 90 out
when 100 requested).

RE: FW: [Elecraft] Running an ICOM PW-1 Amp with the K3

2008-12-25 Thread John E. Reiser
Hi Tom, Mike, and All,

Yup, I forgot to mention that I synchronize the band switching between the
K3 and the PW1 manually_ sorry about that. Obviously, it's very important.
The amp might be able to protect itself from a mismatch of bands, or
over-driving for that matter, but I don't want to test it.

It's not too hard for me to remember to change the amp's band switch though,
because these days of no sunspots I operate on 20 meters 90% of the time
anyway. When I occasionally go to another band, I either run barefoot at
100 watts, or am careful to switch the amp. Of course, when I go back to 20
meters QRO, I need to remember to turn down the drive from the K3 to 20
watts (or 25 watts maximum, which gives me 800 watts out from the PW1).

I wish I had a way of automating the band switching and control of the K3
drive via alc, but it is over my head to figure out how to hook it up. If
anyone out there has accomplished that, I'd be glad to hear how they did it.

Again, I'm not recommending anything, but just sharing my own experiences
FWIW.

Season's Greetings John:

Y'know, when we were originally beating this around, I failed to ask about
auto-band switching. Since there's no mention of using the CV-I interface,
I'm assuming you're merely manually changing the PW-1 from band to band
rather than attempting to use the K3's serial band output data?

Several of us have been discussing this (band switching) problem directly
amongst ourselves, with not a lot of what we considered to be 'suitable'
solutions... without having to add additional interfacing circuitry.

Any thoughts?

Hi Tom,

I have been driving my Icom PW-1 with my K3 for nine months now without any
problems. I use it for CW, SSB and digital modes.

I simply have a coax jumper between ANT1 on the K3 and Input 2 on the PW-1,
of course. And PTT is accomplished by means of a shielded cable from Radio
Shack that has RCA plugs on each end. I don't use any connection for ALC
with the K3. However, I am very careful not to overdrive the amp.

Let me explain. My "other" radio is an Icom 756 Pro 2. It gets very little
use anymore, but I left it connected to Input 1 on the amp. Besides a coax
jumper, the Pro 2 is connected to the amp with a special cable provided by
Icom. The cable provides for PTT and ALC. When one first sets up the amp,
one is instructed by the manual to calibrate the ALC. This is accomplished
by means of a screwdriver adjustable potentiometer on the back of the amp.
The meter on the front panel of the amp has a switch-selectable ALC scale
with a red line mark at mid-scale. The ALC is calibrated by adjusting the
pot such that the needle does not go past the red mark.

Two identical sets of input jacks and ALC-calibration-pots are provided on
the amp, for Input 1 and Input 2, respectively. Before I connected the K3,
I calibrated the ALC on the Input 2 side using my Pro 2. My thinking was
(correctly or not) that as long as I controlled the drive from the K3 so
that the ALC meter on the amp stayed below the calibrated red mark, all was
well.

Now, when I use the amp, I set the output of the K3 to 20 watts. That gives
me about 600 watts out, as measured on my LP-100A watt meter. The ALC meter
on the amp stays within the lower (leftmost) third of the scale. The
overdrive-protection circuits in the amp have never activated. The
difference between 600 and 1000 watts out is negligible at the receiving
end, of course.

With the Pro 2 I used to set the drive to just give me 1K out, although I
could have pushed it to 1100 or 1200 on some bands. It took about 25 to 30
watts of drive. Of course, with the ALC connected, the ALC never went past
the red mark on the meter.

So, bottom line, I am able to use the PW-1 with my K3 but, without ALC, I
have to be careful. In writing this note, I'm merely sharing my own
experience, in case it can help someone. Others may have a better solution,
perhaps using the negative-going ALC mod to the K3.

I'm about to loan my K3 to another local ham who currently has an IC-7800
and PW-1 amplifier.

His IC-7800 has been sent in for service so it's temporarily out of
the
picture. However the PW-1 is still in play and this local is gonna want
to use it with the K3.

Is anyone running a PW-1 with their K3? If so, please contact me a.s.a.p.
so I can exchange some info with you. Specifically I need to know what it
took to interface the two devices and to get them to function without any
hiccups.

Appreciated.

Thanks John, I really appreciate your feedback!

I am looking forward to it. I have xmas week off so I will be building
then.

Here are the pix I took of the initial build, I will be taking more

[Elecraft] K3

2008-12-11 Thread John E. Reiser
Pardon my gushing.

I just installed the KRX3, the KDVR3, and the K3AFMDKT in my K3 #384, along
with the MCU 2.72 / DSP 1.98 beta firmware.

What a great radio! It just gets better and better!

Thanks Wayne, Eric and Lyle and all your colleagues at Elecraft.

me between 700 and 800 watts out, as measured on my LP-100A watt meter. The
ALC meter on the amp stays within the lower (leftmost) third of the scale.
The overdrive-protection circuits in the amp have never activated. The
difference between 750 and 1000 watts out is negligible at the receiving
end, of course.

That was beyond my
abilities to implement.

RE: [K3] [Elecraft] Loud audio blast on power up

2008-11-25 Thread John E. Reiser
I noticed recently that on power up my K3 makes a noise for a fraction of a
second. It sounds like background atmospheric noise as it would sound with
the SSB filter active, even though the radio was last powered off with a CW
filter set. I don't remember exactly when this behavior began, but it seems
that it was in the last few beta firmware releases. In every other respect
my K3 behaves normally.

Obviously, this is no big deal. However, I did try reloading the latest
beta version, as suggested on this reflector. I always use "Send All
Firmware to K3", which reloads the data tables. It didn't help.

Could it be that recent firmware versions impose a slight delay before the
filter selection stored on power down is implemented on power up?

You can also load data tables (along with all the other firmware, a complete
refresh) by clicking "Send All Firmware to K3" on the Firmware tab without
checking Advanced Mode. Advanced Mode has too many choices!

Shep, sorry for the late reply; I've been traveling.

In the K3 Utility under View, check Advanced Mode. This will display a
check box labeled *Always load DSP data tables*. Also, be sure to check all
the appropriate boxes for loading the Firmware modules.

This is the solution Gary provided back in March. Hopefully, it will work
for your problem now.

Chuck, AE4CW

Chuck-
I have the same problem. It started with V2.57. How do I reload "data
tables" ?
Thanks
Shep - W2BSB

I had this problem long ago; a reload of the firmware AND the data tables
cured it. The trick was the data tables. Thanks to Gary at Elecraft.
