Re: [Elecraft] K3 goes deaf when set to 12W or more

2024-09-16 Thread Ken WA8JXM
I had a similar problem years ago. Apparently a not-close lightning bolt
damaged the tx protection. Elecraft Tech Support was very good in the
diagnosis and suggested I could do the repair but my skills are from the
vacuum tube days so I sent it back to Elecraft for repair.

I suggest you contact Elecraft support.

Good luck,

[Elecraft] KPA500 distorts transmit signal in Bypass

2024-06-11 Thread qat ken brookner
Hi Everyone,

I have a KPA500 SN 4414 that I use with a Flex 6600 and an upgraded K3. I’ve
started getting reports of dirty signals when I use the KPA500 at >200 watts
with either rig. The problem is there at lower power it turns out, but I guess
it’s not bad enough to get complaints. I did some testing, swapping, checking
cables…

If the KPA500 is switched OFF, the signals pass through and look good to me on
a separate SDR. I’m using a dummy load for testing and use various power
settings. As soon as I switch the amp ON, even in bypass I see tons of spurs
when transmitting at various power levels (even down to just a few watts).
Doesn’t matter if I’m using the Flex or the K3. Turn the amp to operate and
the same thing, just bigger signal. Turn the KPA500 off and the signal from
the Flex or K3 looks good again.

So… I’m hoping someone has seen this before and that it’s something I can fix
without shipping this back to Elecraft. Any ideas?

Thanks & 73

David,

True but IIRC I was replying to a message where he said the SWR was flat
through 6m.  Usually, somewhere between 20m and 6m, receive losses do count.

(I wonder if, at microwave frequencies, it is possible to use
circulators and isolators to put passive losses in on only the
transmit path.)

Re: [Elecraft] KAT 500 Loses Match

2024-01-13 Thread Ken WA8JXM
Unless its something like a log periodic, I think anything with those
frequency/SWR specs can only do it with high resistive losses.  It
reminds me of the HF dipole B&W makes for the military: it is designed
to appear to have a low SWR by having 3 db of  resistive losses.  The
military considered that an acceptable design.   Remember, antenna
losses affect TX and  RX, so that's 6 db system loss.

Ken WA8JXM

On 1/13/2024 2:37 PM, Walter Underwood wrote:

The C HA-50HD is rated for 250 W SSB or 75 W for digital modes. It gets a flat
SWR with resistive losses in the transformer. That is why the transformer has
heat sink fins. A KPA500 is almost certainly overheating the transformer and
causing failures. I would back off the power to match the ratings. For SSB with
compression, I would run less than 250 W, maybe 150 W.

It is possible that overheating has caused permanent damage to the transformer.

One detailed set of tests showed at least 75% of transmitter power being turned
into heat in the transformer.

Here is what Comet says about that antenna.

CHA-250HD (New version of the CHA-250B)

The Comet CHA-250HD is the revised CHA-250B.

The top section of aluminum has been replaced with a solid whip for greater
flexibility and less strain on the lower sections in high winds. A uniquely
designed broadband vertical requiring NO GROUND RADIALS.

This is EXTREMELY easy to assemble, requires no tuning or adjustments and VSWR
is under 1.6:1 continuously from 3.5MHz – 57MHz!

It is not a 1/4 wave vertical, but an end-fed long wire type antenna with a
matching transformer in a vertical position.

Broadband:

TX 3.5 – 57MHz
RX 2.0 – 90MHz
VSWR: 1.6:1 or less
Max Power: 250W SSB 75W Digital modes/FT8, etc…

CHA-250HD Transformer Section

This is a the “magic” behind the CHA-250HD, the transformer matching section.

The transformer on the original CHA-250 had smooth sides. The current version
has a heat sink to dissipate heat created inside the transformer.

Yes, some of the RF that enters the power feeding section is turned into heat
rather than transmitted as RF, but that is one of the compromises needed to
create a broad-band, low SWR, multi-band HF antenna with minimal visual impact.

during transmissions.  It takes some effort to correct it, and I
typically lose a QSO in the process.  The relays go nuts trying to
re-tune, and sometimes produces a fault condition. Usually, I can
correct it by restarting both the amplifier and tuner.  I have a Comet
CHA-250HD, which has a almost a flat 1.1 SWR from 80m to 6m.  I don't
need a tuner while barefoot.  However, when I first hooked up the
KPA500, the SWR was not flat, and added the KAT500 this week, which
led to my SWR issue.

I hope the cause and resolution can be determined.

It's possible that something is arcing and, of course changing the  tuning.

Do you have the internal tuner in the K4?  If so, does it behave the
same way?

Why do you have the amplifier running?  30m is as restricted power band.

If you leave the amp and tuner out of the circuit and transmit with the
K4 directly, does the SWR meter stay steady, or does it fluctuate at
full power?

Ken WA8JXM

Why is the amplifier connected?  30m is a restricted powerband.

Running CW, I can start transmitting and all is fine- my LP100A is showing

I start transmitting again – pwr out is only about 10 W at that new match,
and eventually the tuner becomes untuned again. Sometimes, it will then
hold the tune but still only getting abt 9-10w power out. The issue occurs
with KPA500 both on and off.

Does this sound like a KAT 500 problem or maybe an RFI problem.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise from KAT500?

2023-12-02 Thread Ken Winterling
Eugene,

This may or may not address your issue but the KAT500 user manual reports
that a signal may be heard from an oscillator in the unit. The manual
advises that this can be shut down when not in use by running the KAT500
Utility.

Below is the reference to Idle Sleep in the manual.

*Idle SleepIn some installations a 28004.5 MHz signal may be heard from an
oscillator in the KAT500. If this is an issue, you can cause the KAT500
oscillator to shut down when it is not needed. Click on Idle Sleep to put a
check in the radio button. The oscillator will stop running shortly after
the last key press or the last data communication with other equipment and
restart automatically when needed.*

#1, contact Amazon customer service and inform them what you reported
here. Some years ago I had a similar situation with a Baofeng handheld, it
came with frequencies programmed in it. Amazon was not happy and
immediately issued a refund.
Years ago I bought the CM-500 and a Logitech gaming headset at a much lower
price. (For my K3 and Flex-6300). They both worked very well on both rigs
and I received similar audio reports. The headset padding did not last as
long, but considering it was 1/3rd the price of the CM-500, that was
acceptable.

Re: [Elecraft] Digital mode power handling for KAT3

2023-10-11 Thread Ken WA8JXM
Not just the tuner, the K3 is not rated for full power on 100% duty cycle
modes. Just like it's not rated or 100% key down CW. But realize that
many of the modes are half transmit and half listen.

Different digital modes have different duty cycles.

From the W1HKJ.com website:
100% duty cycle: Olivia, MFSK,RTTY
80%: BPSK, MT63
44% CW
22%:FieldHell

There are more modes on Dave's website, but those are some of the
major ones. IDK if Joe Taylor has similar information on his website for
the modes he supports. It loioks like his modes may require full duty
cycle.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT 500 Antenna Selection Problems

2023-08-04 Thread Ken WA8JXM
A better solution than my two band change workaround would be to write some

software to read UDP radio info messages from rig control software (in my

case, either N1MM+ or DXLab Suite Commander) and issue BN commands to the

KAT500 through its serial port connection.

No need to write additional code, DXLab already has that functionality ,On
the PORTS setup, there is a secondary serial port that you can direct to
the KAT500 \

Re: [Elecraft] A dumb question about lightning

2023-07-31 Thread Ken WA8JXM
Geoff,

I certainly understand your "do it right" approach...the impossible:

8 ft ground rods -- I have bedrock at 36-42". When I put the tower up, I
tried. I rented a heavy SDS hammer drill and, despite hours of trying,
never got deeper than 5 ft. And what good is a single, shallow rod in rock?

"Lower the antenna to the ground when a storm approaches." I'm not going
out at 2 a.m. to fool with antennas. With frequent storms,I might as
well leave the antennas on the ground except when operating. Not worth the
time and effort to pull them back up for an hour of operating. Too much
of a mess and tangle to leave them on the ground, I'm talking 60,and 80
and 40m antennas, support lines, coax, etc. Tangles. I don't operate that
much, and it would not be worth all the hassle.

Technically I know you are right. From a practical standpoint, it's
probably time to turn in my license and sell the equipment. (My Novice
license was issued 60 years ago.)

Solutions have to be practical. Quitting the hobby is the only practical
solution I see.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] A dumb question about lightning

2023-07-28 Thread Ken WA8JXM
Protecting your equipment goes beyond a direct strike. I had an element in
my K3 transmit final wiped out by a lightning strike a good distance away.
I wasn't on the air at the time but I remember the strike. This was
through a pair of Alpha-Delta switches.

Sometimes I miss "the good old days" of vacuum tube rigs when I operated
during thunderstorms ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] TL-922

2023-03-29 Thread Ken Winterling
Be careful with the TL-922. An unmodified TL-922 has about 100VDC on the
keying line. I'm not familiar with the K3 so I don't know if its keying
circuit can handle that voltage/current.

I would check the K3 manual for its keying circuit specifications and also
measure the TL-922 keying line voltage. You may need a keying line buffer
(small relay or solid state high voltage transistor) between the K3 and the
amp.

Re: [Elecraft] Stacking KPA on KAT

2022-07-23 Thread Ken Winterling
Like Jim, I've had my KPA on top for years. No heat issues because the KPA
generates the heat and it is on top.

Also, with all of the cables attached to the KAT500 I find it is better
having the KAT on the bottom so the cables lay flat on the table rather
than all of them arching over the back of the KPA amp.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 reduces power as it gets warmer?

2022-06-05 Thread Ken K6MR
"Given its high duty cycle, you are asking for trouble if you operate your
power amplifier in FT8 mode using your KPA1500 at anywhere near high power."

Worst case duty cycle on FT8 is never more than 50%. This assumes that you are
transmitting every odd or even time slot. Very few stations are able to keep
that rate for very long. So I would bet the actual duty cycle is more like 30%
to 40% in actual use.

On a practical note, I tried FT8 once in a contest (the first WWDigi contest).
I ran SO2R, with each radio set to transmit on the alternate time slot. My
station uses a single KPA1500 driven by two K3s, switched accordingly. I ran
this setup for a whole day, and other than the fans getting to level 5
occasionally, it worked fine. I regularly use this setup on RTTY, and see
similar results. I can run 2BISQ on RTTY without a problem.

And to answer the original poster's question, yes, the amp will reduce output
as it gets warmer. In my case it drops about 100 watts (1500 -> 1400) which is
-0.3 dB. Hardly enough to worry about.

FT8 is a weak signal mode, designed for low power. Given its high duty cycle,
you are asking for trouble if you operate your power amplifier in FT8 mode
using your KPA1500 at anywhere near high power. I burned out my final on my K2
at 15 watts on FT8.

What is the setting for 10m in the KAT500 utility? The behavior you see

unmodified MC-60 on the Elecraft.

I prefer to make adapters for my rigs so I can use (almost) any mic I have

find what I'm looking for. But then, I've pretty much read them cover to
cover. My '64 Handbook and '62 Antenna Book are my go to references,

Re: [Elecraft] PayPal holding payment. (Follow up)

2022-05-08 Thread Ken WA8JXM
FWIW, my wife had very good results from Paypal. She bought a saddle
online and paid with paypal. When it arrived, it did not match the
description or photos. The seller ignored her protests so she contacted
PP. She reasonably quickly got a human, explained the situation and sent
pictures. They withheld the funds from the seller. The saddle was sent
back. The seller claimed not to have received it, but the proof of
delivery cleared that up and my wife got her money back. She is a firm
believer in PP.

I've had two bad transactions in 40 years and had excellent results with
my credit card company reversing the charges (PP not involved.)

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue

2022-04-01 Thread Ken K6MR

"However, if the rigs are on different bands, you do need to rely on frequency
sensing by the amp."

You don't have to do this, but it does take a bit of extra hardware/software to
interface two K3s to a KPA1500. In addition to the necessary relays to switch
the RF path you can use an Arduino to manage the band data as well as the Aux
Bus messages. I also use a MicroHam MK2R+ to point the amp at the correct
radio. It is seamless. I have the amp in a closet and never touch it,
monitored only by the remote software. I can switch instantly between radios
in a SO2R setup and interleave QSOs.

Jim,.

I use the "1A2R" (one amp tw0 radios) from 4O4A. I have two rigs share my
KPA1500. However, if the rigs are on different bands, you do need to rely on
frequency sensing by the amp. Not sure if the KPA500 does that.

Well, it looks like there is no simple solution to this dilemma. I was hoping
to (easily) be able to use the amp with either rig while both were here in the
shack. Pulling the audio cable when I want to use the IC-705 with the amp isn’t
practical due to the location of the radio. I changed the “Radio” setting from
K3 to Analog and Serial, but with the cables attached, the result is the same -
as soon as the amp is put in OPER mode it goes into transmit state (* showing
on the LCD).

So, the only option for the time being is to always have the K3 powered up and
on the band that I want to operate the IC-705 on. Just need to keep their
frequencies separated as much as I can. Unless Jack comes up with an
alternate…! :-) :-)

"They are a "bandaid" for the lack of band buttons on the K3."

I've always considered "band buttons" on any radio to be the worst possible use
of front panel space I can think of. I always operate with a logging program
open, and it's far easier to just type in the frequency I want without removing
my hands from the keyboard.

I think with the amplifier they just had so much front panel space available
that they just couldn't think of anything else to put there. In the years I've
had KPA500s and a KPA1500 I have yet to touch them. To each his own.

It should be possible to disable the KPA 500 band buttons but it isn't. They
are a "bandaid" for the lack of band buttons on the K3. The best I could do
was set the KPA 500 back to TS-590 TX frequency in under 1 second if a KPA 500
band button was accidentally pressed.

I've had the Hakko 808 for many years. It has been used on through hole PCBs,

Elecraft gear dominates in the video. Take a look at the "Notes" section

Subject: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Remote Software Question

Folks,
Using the KPA1500 remote program. There is a slider control for the fan
just below the temp bargraph. I can manually adjust the slider to give me
different fan speeds, so the control is communication with the KPA1500.
I seem to remember when I first installed the remote software that the
slider position responded to the KPA1500’s automatic fan speed. I could look
at the position of the slider and know (while wearing headphones) what the fan
speed was. But that no longer seems to be working, and the blue slider remains
at the far left position even when the amp fans are running. So I’m not quite
sure how this slider is supposed to work. If I set min fan speed in the KPA1500
menu to “1” the slider position will move to “1” It just doesn’t move when the
fan is set to “auto” and comes on by itself.

No. The FPGA gets loaded each time you turn on the P3. There are different
code images for each monitor resolution. So the uP checks which resolution you
have selected and loads the proper code for that resolution.

Elecraft KPA500 sn 1910 dead.

UPDATE 12/17/21

First. Thanks to everyone who has responded to mypost. I have read all
comments withinterest and have responded to several folks who offered ideas
that I havetried. Thank you for trying to help.

SECOND. Here is a bit of extra info that I havediscovered. I disassembled the
fuse blockand cleaned all contacts and the fuses with the “Deoxit” product. I
configured my “OWON HDS272S”meter/oscilloscope to measure resistance and noted
that the leads are about 0.7ohms. I connected the meter leads to theflat
prongs of the 115vac cord that was plugged into the fuse block on theKPA500.
With the rocker switch on thefuse block 3 in the OFF position (o) the meter
showed zero (0) ohms. With switch 3 ON (!) the meter showed 2.8ohms. Thus,
subtracting the resistance inthe meter leads, the resistance through the fuse
block changed from 0 ohms to2.1 ohms. I connected the 115vac cord tothe wall
socket and went through the power up procedure. No joy. I listened for the hum
of the transformer, and there was no hum. I am flummoxed!

CONCLUSION. Thisleads me to believe that the power cord, fuses, and fuse block
are functioning.

I think that my next step is to look into the possibilityof sending the KPA500
to a repair facility. I am open to your ideas. 73 Sam

Re: [Elecraft] “ELECRAFT NVIS field day”

2021-12-17 Thread Ken WA8JXM
--- "In Hawaii, 40 meters worked great for NVIS probably 11 out of 12
months a year. Someone else who knows can comment, but I got the impression
that 40 meters almost never works for NVIS in the mainland US. If this is
true, an Elecraft NVIS field day might be limited to those who either have
room for an 80 meter dipole, or who can devise some other kind of 80 meter
antenna that can radiate up."

I think it depends on time of day, time of year, and what part of the
sunspot cycle. 40m is pretty much the top limit for NVIS though. But
sometimes 40 works for NVIS. That's one of the reasons for our 60m
allocation, NVIS when 40 is too long and 80m is dead. OTOH I've seen
160 too long for statewide coverage at times.

FWIW, I agree a vertical is not an NVIS antenna. Some people may be
confusing groundwave (usually up to 25 miles) with NVIS. They are totally
different propagation modes.

[Elecraft] Power Increase Elecraft K1 modification

2021-12-10 Thread Ken Brown
Elecraft K1 modifications
Searching for K1 modifications, I found JL3AMK and his website
for Power increased on an Elecraft K1.
Refers to page 79 in the Elecraft manual, DRIVER Q6, 2SC2166.
Resistor 30 is attached to Q6.

Is this a safe or recommended mod?
Did you perform the modification?
***
http://www.jl3amk.org/en/
Power Increased

The output power of my K1 was four watts on 15 meters, so I added a
0.001uF capacitor (as a bypass) in parallel with R30 on the RF board.

160m: 10W (not changed)
80m: 10W (not changed)
17m: 7W (from 6W)
15m: 7W (from 4W)

[Elecraft] P3 Issue

2021-11-29 Thread Ken Widelitz
About 8 hours into CQWW CW, one of my P3's bandscope function stopped
working. I checked the cables. I powered the unit off. When it came on, it
worked for a few seconds. The outboard monitor worked for a few seconds.
Then it stopped working. I did this a few times with the exact same
results. I never turned it or the radio off after the contest. This
morning before swapping P3s to make sure it was a P3 issue, I turned the
P3 off and when I turned it back on after just a few seconds, it worked
perfectly. I felt half blind during most of the contest, so I want to make
sure I don't run into this again. Any suggestions.

Re: [Elecraft] [POSSIBLE SPAM] Re: [POSSIBLE SPAM] Re: Need K3 Board

2021-11-28 Thread Ken K6MR
The two boards I saw had an event on the USB 5V line, not the data lines.
Almost everything connected to the USB 5V line was toasted. So the failure
modes would be different depending on the actual event. One thing is for sure:
be sure everything in the shack is bonded so that you don’t get a ground
bounce. That is sure to take out lots of stuff.

The number of parts zapped by a lightning strike is impossible to determine
in advance. The more ground paths you have (USB cables, Aux cables, audio
cables, etc.) the higher the probability of higher part mortality count.
However, in every when only the USB cable was connected, I just had to
replace the TUSB2036 and the USBLC6-2 ESD protection packs.

Your mileage may vary... lightning of course.

I think that's an excellent offer. In the absence of Elecraft supporting
these older boards (as I stated in my first post, when I asked Elecraft to
repair my KIO3 they declined), it would be great if we could compile a small
database of people like yourself willing and able to do proper repair ...
for a reasonable fee, of course.

If somebody was willing to do this on a regular basis, I suspect that many
of us would be willing to simply donate older/excess boards. I have a
couple that I would.

The KX3 receiver is quite capable in crowded environments. A KX3 with its

[Elecraft] KX3 in multi radio environment

2021-10-31 Thread Ken K6MR
I don’t have a KX3, but a friend does and he has a question regarding the KX3
receiver in a multi transmitter environment like Field Day. I would not expect
it to be as good as a K3, but is it usable? Anything special you have to do to
it? I’m thinking at a minimum a set of band filters, which would be easy even
with the 100 watt amp.

Thanks for your thoughts and experiences.

Re: [Elecraft] Through-hole Replacement for K3 Q5 (2N7002)

2021-10-21 Thread Ken K6MR
The Fairchild/On Semi data sheet is common to the 2N7000/2N7002/NDS7002A.
There are some differences in the maximum ratings, with the 2N7000 good for
more continuous drain current (probably due to the TO-92 package). They all
have the same drain-source breakdown voltage (60V).

I’m assuming this is Q5 on the main RF board. The active device parameters are
different but not enough to worry about in the circuit where Q5 is used. It is
nothing but a switch to reverse the active state of the 7R line to activate the
big FET used for the Key Out line. The 2N7000 will be fine.

The original surface-mount part seems to be back in stock in the US, but
I'm afraid that what I need is a through-hole equivalent, because the PC
board where the old one was mounted is a wreck (damage from part
failure, plus my ham-handed efforts to replace it). Google thinks a
2N7000 will do, but I'd sure like to get an expert opinion.

Re: [Elecraft] HELP! XFINITY SHUT OFF INTERNET DUE TO HAM ANTENNAS

2021-10-20 Thread Ken K6MR
I’d start with the Public Utilities Commission. I had good response from them
when dealing with PG&E. I ‘think’ cable companies are under their
jurisdiction, but if not they can probably tell you who does deal with them.

Subject: [Elecraft] HELP! XFINITY SHUT OFF INTERNET DUE TO HAM ANTENNAS

Dear Gang:
Xfinity, our internet provider, showed up at 7:30am this morning, to explain to
the XYL that we were being cut off for good because my amateur radio activities
had caused wide area outages. Oddly, these wide area outages did not include
my own house. They told her the antennas themselves--absent any power--were
the problem
The last time I was threatened, I installed chokes and opto-isolaters on our
shielded ethernet lines, and after being told they use 14Mhz as their carrier
frequency, I have stayed off 20m, only using 100w unless I'm in a rare contest.
I asked to speak to a technical guy--they gave me a number which I called, but
he never called back.
Any Ideas? Does anyone have a contact at the ARRL, or know a communications
lawyer? Comcast/Xfinity will be back out here at 2pm Pacific time--I'd
appreciate any help.
My XYL depends on an internet connection to work. Being off the air is
unimaginable.
Frantic,

73, Eric WD6DBM

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 with IC-7610?

2021-08-01 Thread Ken Winterling
I have had the IC-7610 and the KPA500/KAT500 for over three years and it
works very well when I switch bands with the intention of transmitting. My
"nit" to pick is that the KAT500, as has been said, can not be preset by
the IC-7610 in receive. It can preset the KPA500, for all bands but WARC,
by using a DIY "band data" voltage cable (Icom doesn't support band data
voltages for the WARC bands).

If I want to *listen* to different frequencies on the IC-7610 that are on
different antennas connected to the KAT500 I have to manually select the
antenna on the KAT500. This makes scanning frequencies on the IC-7610
impossible.

The KPA1500, that combines an amp and antenna matcher (aka tuner), can read
Icom CI-V data and preset both the amp and the "tuner". This feature should
have been/should be available for the KPA500 and KAT500. I believe the
KPA500 and KAT500 can read data from Kenwood and Yaesu transceivers. Why
was Icom left out of the mix?

I use this four position AV switch to select the keying line. Since it can
switch three connections (L/R audio, video) you can get creative. Although
I don't use ALC it could also be switched along with the keying line.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 with IC-7610?

2021-07-30 Thread Ken Winterling
Chuck,

I, too, have been using an IC-7610 with the KAT500/KPA500 combination for
several years. My IC-7610 TUNER jack is connected to the TUNE jack on the
rear of the KAT500 via a LDG Electronics IC-PAC-6 cable. While the TUNE
button on the IC-7610 or the TUNE button on the KAT500 activates the
IC-7610 10W tune function and causes the KAT500 to tune, the Elecraft
KAT500 manual stated "If a tune cycle is performed, 20 watts or more will
produce more accurate tuning".

My procedure is to switch to RTTY mode on the IC-7610 and key the rig. The
KAT500 matches the load and I return the rig to the previous mode. This
literally takes only a few seconds. Yes, the TUNE button works but I have
found that sometimes my method produces a better match. Be sure to follow
the KAT500 "training" procedure to store your various bands and frequencies
in the tuner so they can be quickly recalled.

As has been mentioned, you have to manually adjust your output as you
switch between the amp and full power. I have a Brother P-Touch label on
the amp to remind me about max power input.

As for obtaining a tuner cable, you can get one from LDG, and other
vendors. The IC-PAC-6 cable is 6' long while the IC-PAC cable is 14" long.

I use a sine wave UPS in the shack and an IOTA 55 amp power supply for
the rigs is plugged into that. Power blips and short outages do not affect
the station with the exception that the KPA500 will drop out since it is
running on 240V. The UPS provides more than enough time to safely shut
down the rig(s) if necessary.

Re: [Elecraft] Don't Shoot!

2021-06-02 Thread Ken Winterling
Richard,

If there is any overshoot, my KPA500 hasn't complained. I have both an
IC-7300 and an IC-7610. The KPA500 is teamed with the KAT500.
The keying line is routed through the KAT500 and the rigs are both set for
a 15ms transmit delay.
I do not run an ALC line on either rig. The rig power is set to roughly
21%; adjusted slightly as necessary.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 with Icom 7300

2021-06-02 Thread Ken Winterling
Steven,

I use a KPA500 (and KAT500 tuner) with both an IC-7300 and an IC-7610. Both
have the transmit delay set for 15ms.
The amp is keyed directly from either rig using RCA/RCA cables from the
SEND jack to the amp's keying jack.
I do not use a keying line buffer between the amp and either rig. The amp
has a very low voltage/current keying circuit.
I also do not use the ALC line. Transmit power is set at about 21%.

The only other important cables are the coax from the radio to the amp and
from the amp to the tuner. I also have a cable
from the 7300 or 7610 tuner port to the KAT500. Your LDG tuner probably
already has the cable.

I don't believe the LDG tuner can interrupt the keyng line to the mp the
way the KAT500 can. You will need to be careful to
put the amp in standby before initiating ay tuning operation so you do not
hot switch the amp or provide it with a very high SWR
or no antenna connection.

GL!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K4 now in Rob Sherwood's RX performance table

2021-05-28 Thread Ken Widelitz
Hi Dave,

I am remoting my VY2TT station. Unfortunately it didn't happen before the
Pandemic. For me, the most difficult challenge was remoting the panadapter.
K4 = problem solved. Anyone anywhere with a *tablet* and internet can have
a virtual K4 at their fingertips. As great a radio as it is, the K3s can't
do that.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RTTY Questions

2021-04-29 Thread Ken K6MR
My radios only do the power ramp up the first time you transmit after changing
bands. Doesn’t take that long though. Less than one second I would guess. As
noted, it’s the power control loop. Usually it’s not that noticeable.

Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] RTTY Questions

I have two K3 questions:
1. In Data MD, AFSk A, you can set the baud rate to either 45 or 75.
Is the baud rate just for the RTTY reader? Does it affect anything else?
2. With my K3s power set to 100w, RTTY starts at a little below 50w
and and then fairly slowly builds to 100w (measured on an external
wattmeter). I've done a TX calibration -- no change. What is going on?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Ham Radio near high voltage power lines?

2021-04-27 Thread Ken K6MR
Yes, the “noise guy” is only useful for making contact with the linemen. The
one up here really does not want to be bothered. Once I convinced him that I
knew what I was doing he just passed on the info to the scheduler.

All of my problems so far have been simple items. Lightning suppressors seem
to be a big problem up here. One lineman told me they changed vendors to a new
style and he’s seen quite a few go bad.

My noise guy is still around, office in Cottonwood, just south of here.
Friendly enough, and does help the process move forward.

If it’s something a lineman can fix, that’s easy and you’re home free. In my
case the problems were usually either old style insulators, or just an ancient
pole that needs to be rebuilt. That requires at least a 2-man crew so work
needs to be scheduled. Getting on the schedule can drag out. You’re 100% right,
a PUC complaint will get things moving.

I didn’t find the noise guy to be super helpful. Just as easy for me to ID the
pole and have a lineman write it up. They were already aware which hardware was
old junk. I think my noise/comm guy retired. Maybe same guy you had.

“Just be glad all you guys checking power lines don't live in CA with PG&E.”

It took me several years to finally crack the bureaucracy at PG&E. The closer
you get to the repair techs/linemen, the better it gets. Usually one or two
PUC complaints will get you in contact with the local “noise” guy, who doesn’t
work in the same division as the power guys. He is “communications”. Turned
out my noise guy’s office was only a few miles from my house. But they keep
them a secret.

Now getting a lineman out is pretty easy, and they are the easiest to work
with. Tell them which pole is making noise and they go to work.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: High school drafting class, ~1975

2021-04-24 Thread Ken WA8JXM
In 1967 I started work as a Draftsman Trainee in the Engineering Division
of P&G. My group leader told me "There is a timesharing computer terminal
(Teletype 33) down the hall that we are not using. Find out if we can do
anything with it." That started my progression to programming and
eventually microcomputer evaluation and support. I retired in 2001.

BTW, we never did "pen and ink", pencil was used and then converted to
mylar drawings. Items like paper machines (Charmin, Bounty) are done in
right and left pairs (mirror images). The drawings were flipped over to
get the identical mirror images. Printing was erased and redone in
readable form.

Re: [Elecraft] Controlling KAT500/KPA500 with Icom 7610

2021-04-19 Thread Ken Winterling
The cable between the IC-7610 and the KAT500 does two things. First, it
supplies power to the KAT500 so it turns on when the IC-7610 is powered up.
Second, it allows the TUNER button on the IC-7610 to cause the '7610 to
switch to CW mode and transmit an approximate 10W signal. That, in turn,
causes the KAT500 to attempt to find a matching solution to the selected
antenna. You shouldn't need one of those "tuner plugs" as that function is
built into the KAT500 when connected by the AH-4 Molex cable wiring. The
above assumes that you have the KAT500 connected to the IC-7610 ANT1
antenna port.

If your KAT500 is not working that way with the IC-7610 TUNER button then I
would recheck the cable wiring and verify that the KAT500 is connected to
ANT1 on the IC-7610. If those are good it is possible there is a problem
with the KAT500.

Good luck!

Re: [Elecraft] Controlling KAT500/KPA500 with Icom 7610

2021-04-19 Thread Ken Winterling
Buck,

I have had the IC-7610 and KAT500/KPA500 for almost three years and they
are a very nice pair (or trio..). The IC-7610 doesn't "control" the KAT500
per se. Changing bands/frequencies on the IC-7610 doesn't cause any
response from the KAT500. Only when the IC-7610 transmits does the tuner
detect (sense) the RF and then adjust the capacitors and inductors to match
to the current antenna. An Elecraft transceiver, OTOH, does
communicate with the KAT500 (and KPA500) and changes
bands/frequencies/antenna ports as the bands and frequencies are changed.

The KPA500 responds the same way and changes bands by sensing transmit RF.
You can build a "band data" cable to interface the IC-7620 to the KP500 and
it will, with restrictions, follow the band selected by the IC-7610. The
restriction is that Icom's band data voltages do not support the WARC
bands. As a result, both 24 mHz and 28 mHz select 28mHz; both 18 mHz and 21
mHz select 21mHz. So, for all bands except WARC, the KPA500 will follow
band selections made on the IC-7610 (or almost any other Icom such as the
IC-7300, etc.).

I can send you a diagram of the band data cable if you would like. It is
only marginally useful and most ops of non Elecraft gear seem to just let
the KPA500 (and KAT500) RF sense the transmitted RF to make necessary
selections. Be sure to read the KAT500 manual section regarding "training"
your tuner.

GL!

Re: [Elecraft] Kpa500 not playing with my IC-7600

2021-03-27 Thread Ken Winterling
Tom,

While I do not have an IC-7600 I do use an IC-7610 with a KPA500; the cable
should be the same.
I use a DIY band data cable to connect the IC-7610 to the KPA500 and it has
worked for almost three years.

I'm curious as to the exact part numbers of the cables you purchased from
the two different vendors.
What are the vendor names?
Do you have a schematic diagram of either/both cables?

If you are interested, I can send you a schematic of the cable I built.

Re: [Elecraft] How and How Often to Clean KPA-1500 Cooling Systems?

2021-03-27 Thread Ken K6MR
As you know, I run my amp in a single amp, SO2R configuration. During a heavy
2BSIQ session on RTTY, temps reach 90 deg C. Fans go to 5 occasionally. Not a
problem. Don’t worry.

My power supply does get quite the dust bunny on top. I just hit it with the
vacuum every week when doing the shack. I haven’t noticed the same problem
with the RF deck. Perhaps with the fans on super high speed it blows itself
out. I’ve had the power supply case off twice, and didn’t see a build up
internally. So I’m pretty sure it’s not an issue if you vacuum it regularly.

I have the amp and power supply in a bookshelf type cabinet in the closet. One
thing I did when I first set it up was to make a seal around the back of the RF
desk. It is a piece of cardboard, stapled to the back edge of the bookshelf,
and cut to just fit around the rear of the amp. This keeps the amp from
sucking in hot exhaust from the top vents back into the amp. Of course this
won’t be a problem if you have the amp on a desk with nothing above it. I have
the minimum recommended clearance of 2” above the amp, and 4” above the power
supply.

I'm uncomfortable with temp above 70C. I infer from the manual that the
displayed temp is that of the final transistor heat sink, and they say
it will hard fault at 112C. Not in my shack! Still looking for an
answer to the cleaning question, though, particularly for the power supply.

Which seems very strange since they post for all the radios, which are far more
complex. When I asked about a schematic, I was told “No”. Same with some

I've had the KPA1500 at my contest station in the Caribbean go south on me
(and another contest group) twice. Both times I was able to get Rene on the

always shared parts of the schematic with me when necessary. It's nothing
secret... just not publically posted.

Big shout out to Rene at Elecraft... Excellent tech.

It wouldn't be above your skill level if they would release the schematics.
Solid state amps are not any more complicated than tube amps, and I think
easier (and safer!) than tubes. My early KPA1500 (#76) has been great, but
not having the schematics really bugs me. I know everyone at Space Galactic
Headquarters is busy with the K4 but posting the KPA1500 schematics would
not take more than a few minutes. And my amp is way out of warranty so they
aren't risking anything. Internally it looks like a pretty generic design.
I've reverse engineered the power supply unit but the RF deck is going to
take some time. I'd rather not if I don't have to.

Re: [Elecraft] Sudden KpA1500 power reduction

2021-02-21 Thread Ken K6MR
Replacing the LDMOS devices is not that difficult. Take a look at W6PQL’s
site, he has a video on how to do it.
http://www.w6pql.com/video/ldmos2copper.wmv

There also seems to be a dearth of information on the upgrades. I was also
told that some upgrades are “factory only”. I don’t think they’ve ever done
that before.

I will say the Rene at Elecraft was excellent when I sent my amp RF deck back
for updates over a year ago. There were several updates that were performed
while it was visiting the left coast. Elecraft support and repair is excellent.

The LDMOS devices in my KPa1500 are soldered to the copper heat spreader. Even
though I have a Bertha soldering iron I would not attempt to change them myself.
