[Elecraft] AF-1 audio filter
Hi, With all the chatter about the AF-1 audio filter lately I thought i would post how I mounted the AF1 and an audio amplifier in a small case to use with my K2. If anyone is interested you can find the pictures and comments on my web site at lawrenceingram.com. Click on the Ham Radio tab and then select the AF-1 article. 73, Larry Ingram AG4NN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] AF-1 audio filter
Ron, Thanks for the complement; I enjoy seeing what I can do to make something fit my needs. I don't have a particularly noisy site but I have the radio sitting on a shelf with another shelf just above it which makes the top firing speaker in the K2 more difficult to hear. So I added the amplifier to connect to a front facing speaker. I probably don't need the extra audio level, but added it because I don't know what I might connect it to in the future. 73, Larry AG4NN At 12:29 PM 12/1/2010, you wrote: Very nice execution Larry! Re: [Elecraft] AF-1 audio filter
Hisaahi, I have used both and find both useful. The thing I like about the AF-1 is the ability to shift the peak frequency. 73, Larry Ingram AG4NN At 12:34 PM 12/1/2010, you wrote: I wasn't paying enough attention lately. [Elecraft] K3 - ATU Tune
Hi, Something curious has happened to my K3 SN 3975 - when I tap the ATU Tune button the power out shown on an external power meter is full power, a little over 100W. The K3 power out indicator also kicks up to full power. I have the unit set to 50W and when I key it normally (CW) it shows 50W on both the external and internal meters. The SWR is fine. Any thoughts on anything I might have done to cause this? Well my indulgence at the Orlando hamfest arrived yesterday - a new K3. This means I need to find a new home for one of my K2s - or my wife may decide to find a new home for me. I have a K2/100 plus the external KAT100 for sale. The K2 serial number is 6405. The KPA100 is older but all the upgrades have been installed. The KSB2, KNB2 and K60XV are all installed in the K2. The other places for accessories have the Rework eliminators installed for easy upgrading. Total cost for all this, including shipping was around $1,600.00. I am asking $1,100 for the complete set and will pay the shipping in the continental US. [Elecraft] K2
Hi, I received a note from Don W3FPR and Hank K8DD about the problem I posted the other day where even when I just tapped the band up button on my recently built K2 it would sometimes go into the RCL mode. First I want to say thanks for the suggestions and then tell you what I found in case someone else has this trouble. It was the usual, a bad solder joint, but not where you would expect it. What happened is U2 pin13 was left floating because the trace from RP1 went through the common terminals on the AGC switch and one of those was not making a good connection. Once I got voltage back on pin 13 of U2 everything worked. The puzzling thing is why it worked most of the time with that pin floating. Thanks again. [Elecraft] K2
Hi, I recently build my second K2 sn 06405. Receiver and transmitter are working fine and I have enjoyed a number of QSOs on 40, 30 and 20 meters and the rest of the bands have been checked out with a signal generator and transmitting into a dummy load. However, occasionally when I go to switch bands with the up (+) key it will go into the RCL mode instead. After the first time I was very careful to just tap the button and not hold it - but it still happens. Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but even more occasionally, when I hit the down (-) button the band goes to the next higher band rather than the lower one. When that happens, the band will continue to go higher with each tap of the down button until I tap the up button. I have resoldered the switch pins and checked that the IC's are properly seated. Has anyone else run across this problem - and if so, what was the solution? Re: [Elecraft] K2: Various Receive Problems
Jon, I wonder if you are tuning at the fastest rate - at that rate the signals would seem to jump in and out as you are describing and since they would not be in the center of the filter passband most of the time it might explaing the seeming lack of sensitivity. [Elecraft] K2/K60XV problem
Hi, I installed the K60XV in my K2 and while checking the output I discovered that when I increase the power control the output follows the control until I reach about .85 mW out then the output jumps to 2.7mW and stays there. When I bring the control back down, the output remains at 2.7mW until I reach about .65mW on the LCD screen. I have checked that all components are in the correct places and that the diodes are properly oriented and all solder joints are good. I did a quick in-circuit check in the diodes and an out of circuit check on Q2 - all check OK. I checked the voltage change on the VRFDET line and it does the same thing as the power output - it increases smoothly until the output jumps to m2.7mW and then remains constant at a little over 3V. Before I go any further or bother the very busy folks at Elecraft I thought I would see if anyone on the reflector has run into the problem. All suggestions gratefully accepted. [Elecraft] K2/K60XV problem
Phillip and Don, Thanks for the quick replies - yes I do have the KAT2 installed. I originally built the K60XV some months ago and seem to remember something about changing a resistor in the ATU but I am not sure. I will look at it in the morning. Don, this is on the low power and the transverter parameters are properly set. In fact I have been successfully using it with the 2 meter transverter but I did have to turn the power control back from the 1mV setting to keep the power level on the transverter at 20W. I am finishing up a 6 meter transverter and put the K2 back on the bench to set it up when I rechecked the power adjustment and discovered why I had to back down on the power control for the 2 meter unit. Thanks again and I will check on the resistor tomorrow and let you know what I find out. Would the K2 with an internal ATU be able to work with this antenna/feed line combination? Thank you, Jim KD5VXH JIm, I have had very good performance from an inverted V hanging from an oak tree at 30 feet to the center with my K2. My inverted V is actually a three band unit with wires cut for 40, 30 and 20 meters all fed at the center with 50 ohm coax. I used an antenna analyzer to trim the wires, starting with the 40 meter section first, for minimum SWR at my operating frequencies. I had very little problem getting a match for each band and I did not need an antenna tuner. The 40 meter section can also be used for 15 meters but I found that the match was up near the top of the band and an antenna tuner (I use the KAT2) is needed to prevent the K2 from cutting back on the power due to the higher SWR at the lower end of the band. [Elecraft] W1 Power Meter
Recently there was some discussion about wanting to mount the W! power meter in a case and several suggestions were offered. I have just finished mounting mine in a 4 X 2 X 5 1/5 utility box by making a small pc board to mount the LEDs separately. It turns out that there is no need to run a wire from each LED leg to the main board; the way the LED's are matrixed you only need 12 wires. The 4 X 2 front panel has the LED indicators for forward power and SWR mounted horizontally with the 3 LED range selection LEDs mounted underneath and the on/off switch in the lower right corner. The coax connectors, DC power in, and the digital socket are mounted on the back panel. The main board is mounted on several spacers in the bottom of the box. It makes a nice addition to my small station if I do say so my self. Hi. If anyone is interested I can send you a .pdf file with some pictures. Just contact me off the reflector. Re: [Elecraft] CW-Pitch 600 Hz or 700 Hz or what?
Perhaps the enhancement could be a BFO that is adjusted by a front panel control? This would be nice, and I presume that you mean that the knob would maintain the location of the BFO in relation to the passband along with the sidetone pitch. Currently it's possible to adjust the pitch from the menu (although this is not a one-knob operation!), but in order to keep the selected pitch inside a narrow passband, you need to do the CAL FIL procedure. So the knob that you refer to would have to cause the microprocessor to recalculate the VCO offset that is used to place the selected pitch at a given location in the filter passband. This is what happens when you run CAL FIL. This is the one feature that I really wish the K2 had. My TS-940 and 756-ProIII both have this, and I find it very helpful. It's not only nice to be able to customize the sidetone pitch, but I like to tweak it easily via a front-panel knob every so often during long operating periods, like contests - adjusting the sidetone (and zero-beat point) up or down a little from time to time seems to help minimize ear (or is it brain?) fatigue. If the filters are not set too narrow I find that the RIT does this for me. Re: [Elecraft] DMM Minimum Capacitance Measurements ?
Jim, I imagine different DMMs have different lower ranges, but what ever the lower range is, you can measure even smaller capacitors by paralleling them with one that does fall into the lower range of your particular DMM. First measure the value of the capacitor that falls within your DMM's range then connect the smaller one in parallel - the difference in the new value measured is the capacitance of the smaller one. Of course with small values you have to use the shortest possible test leads and make sure they stay about the same distance apart for both measurements. Larry Ingram AG4NN K2 sn 2529 snip. What is the lowest capacitance value you can measure with the popular DMMs ? (in picoFarads ?) DMM specs do not spell out what the minimum capacitance is..
