Re: [Elecraft] The List (amsct...@comcast.net)

2012-02-20 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU
If you use a mail-reader that supports threading, you will be able to sort
your messages automatically by who replied to whom.

If your mail reader doesn't support threading (and most do) you can still
see the conversation threads by reading your list at the on-line Nabble
site. You can reply there too, and as a bonus, the topics are sorted by
major field of interest (K3, KX3, QRO, HAM, Off-Topic, etc).

Please do check it out if you're not finding reading the mail in your mail
program to be a pleasant experience.

If you're currently on the digest, you'll probably find the web-based
interface much more useful.

[Elecraft] [K3] MCU 4.47 serial recovery

2012-01-29 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU
I've noticed that the ability of the K3 to recover from disturbances in
RS232 isn't what my memory of it used to be.

For example, if I start a second program sending query commands the the K3,
I can never get it to answer any more serial commands. My belief is that it
used to eventually get back in sync. I've verified this with my own serial
programs and also with k3util. For example, when it's stuck, it won't reply
to FA; at all until power cycle. (Other rig operation other than RS232 is
unaffected.)

I don't know if it's related to the input parsing code in the K3 or if it's
related to some DTR state that gets asserted briefly during the serial port
open. But I can't find any reliable way to clear this other than rig power
cycle. Resetting the K3 baud rate from the front panel, for example,
doesn't cause it to come back.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] MCU 4.47 serial recovery

2012-01-29 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU
Thank you, Wayne.

Changing the retry interval from 50ms to 250ms seems to fix the problem I
encountered, which in more detail was this: When an unrelated program
strobes the RS232 ports (looking for compatible devices) it gets the K3 out
of sync. With the longer retry delay it gets back in sync with the rig
control command stream.

Should I default the update the fldigi rigcat defaults for the K3 to 250ms
retry, 10 retries, 100ms write delay? We're presently shipping 50ms
timeout, 5ms write delay, 2 retries with fldigi rigcat control.

You can build it yourself for about $80, or make a smaller version using
smaller parts and put it in a box for use with your KX1, K2, or KX3.

There's plenty of things you can do with the K3 that are out of the
ordinary, and you can stumble into them by accident.

I think a validator addition to the K3 Utility would be nice.

It could spot potential misconfigurations and provide a narrative-like
description.

The K3 Utility already has a configuration save/restore utility. A new
Validator tab could read the same states using the CAT commands, and
display something like this:

* You cannot transmit because TEST mode is enabled.
To disable TEST mode, press and hold TEST.

* You have selected the separate RX ANT jack on bands 160 and 20m.
While it is common to use a separate RX antenna on low bands, it
is likely you have selected it by accident on 20m, which is the
current band your K3 is set to. To disable the RX antenna on a
band and antenna selection, select the band and ANT1 or
ANT2 (with ANT) and press RX ANT.

* DIGOUT1 is enabled on 40m ANT2 and you have a KPA500 connected
  via the ACC able.
DIGOUT1 is a pin on the 15-pin ACC cable. This will disable the
KPA500 on 40m/ANT2. To change this setting, select 40M and ANT2
and hold CONFIG and change the DIGOUT 1 setting.

* Filter 5 Center Frequency Offset is Zero
Filter is is an Elecraft 200Hz filter and it has a non-zero
Frequency offset. While this is possible, it is more likely that
you have not yet set the frequency offset. Consult the package
that your filter came in and look for the offset frequency.
Select Filter 5 with XFIL and then hold CONFIG and select FL5
FREQ and set it to the value specified.

* XIT is enabled and non-zero
XIT will cause your transmit frequency to differe from the VFO
dial frequency by the amount shown in the VFO B display when you
rotate the RIT/XIT knob. You will see the green RIG/XIT led is
lit, as well as the yellow + or - LED. To disable XIT, tap the
XIT button.

* SPKR+PH is NO
SPKR+PH is set to NO, which disables the K3 speaker. If you have
no audio, but your headphones work, hold CONFIG and navigate to
SPKR+PH and use the VFO knob to set the value to YES.

Re: [Elecraft] KpA500 to K3 band change,fault/status

2011-06-16 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU
The K3 has a per-band/per-antenna DIGOUT1 line on the 15pin AUX connector.
If you use the Elecraft 15-pin AUX cable, DIGOUT1 is tied to the KPA500
inhibit line. So, DIGOUT1=ON means AMP INHIBIT=ON.

For example, if you have a SteppIR (which can be resonant at 40m and up) on
ANT1, you can set DIGOUT1=ON on ANT1 for all bands 30M and below, and it
will never key the amp on the low bands for that antenna. If your have ANT2
connected to a 40M dipole, for example, you could set DIGOUT1=ON for ANT2 on
all bands except for 40M.

Even if you have a high-power external ATU, you might still want to set
DIGOUT1=ON for 60m and 30m, (though the US does allow up to 200W on 30m).

So a box with the amp, the filters, and the battery starts to get a little
bulky, not to mention an ATU.

You can avoid the ATU if you can figure out how to tap into the KX3 ATU

more input than it's used to.

Re: [Elecraft] Still lacking

2011-06-01 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU
I'd suggest LiFePO4 batteries, as they can source the current necessary for
the transmitter easily, and are safer in operation than Lithium Polymer.
They can be safely charged on a portable solar panel if you disconnect once
the voltage reaches 14.4v, and that's pretty much what the SLA charge
controllers do as well. The 2.4 AH packs charge at about 1.5 Amps, so it's
hard to bring too big a panel!

Yes, LiFePO4 has a high power density but not as high energy density as
LiPoly or the typical Li-Ion (laptop) batteries. It was chosen for the One
Laptop per Child project, for example.

The chemistry has a very flat discharge curve, and sources high current or
low current, and retains its efficiency. For SLA, the capacity is rated at
a discharge rate of 1/20 C, so a 7AH SLA battery will give you 1A for 7
hours, but any transmit at 20A would be well beyond its capacity. A 20AH
SLA would give you 1A for 20 hours, and could give you 20A briefly, but not
for 1 hour.

But an 8AH LiFePO4 will have no trouble giving you 20A for 20-25 minutes
solid key down. With SSB 40% modulation at 100W and transmitting 1 minute
out of 4, that gives you 10% duty cycle, and because of the excellent
properties of LiFePO4 you'd get a a couple of hours of operating time
easily, especially with the low RX current draw of the KX3.

Couple the LiFePO4 with a solar panel that can cover the receive current
(about $50) and you extend your QRV to pretty much all day with an 8AH pack
or a couple of 4AH packs.

Re: [Elecraft] OT - Why so much Off topic??

2011-05-26 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU
I created the various web archives for the Elecraft list (except for the
qth.net/qsl.net ones).

In my opinion, the Nabble site is the best one for for reading, for
searching, and for writing as well.
All traffic is synchronized with the mailing list, so you get the best of
both worlds.
It's here: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/

On Nabble, the messages are already filtered and sorted so you can read just
KX3 or just QRO posts.

I created the following categories, and anyone who puts one of these at the
start of the subject gets their messages put into the correct category
directly:

  [K3] [K2] [K1] [KX3] [KX1] [MM] [XV] [HAM] [QRO] [OT]

If a message is marked OT (or even if it's not) and it's ham related, it
goes into [HAM].
Only truly off-topic stuff goes into [OT].

If you need help getting started, send me email and I'll help.

necessary to use it with the LP-PAN output, just for the click-to-qsy and

Julian, G4ILO wrote:

 Julian, G4ILO

I'm a duffer at this time/frequency stuff, but I've scored well enough at
the ARRL FMT to get my call in QST, and I gave a presentation on it at the
Bay Area Maker Faire last year, and a NIST scientist told me I didn't say
anything egregiously wrong, so I'll try to stick to what I understand here.
If you want to know more, go to Febo.com or time-nuts and read a bit (before
you ask questions) and you'll find people with literally orders of magnitude
more experience (and interest) than you ever thought possible.

Both an Rb oscillator and a GPS-DO (and for that matter, your own Cesium
standard) can provide you with a frequency output, but they're different
types of things. A GPS-DO is a managed device with an output, like WWV or
the grid 60 Hz (mains 50Hz) frequency. A Rubidium oscillator is like a
quartz crystal, but more stable over the long term (modulo a well-defined
linear drift), so once it's set, it stays set exceptionally well, though
usually the phase noise isn't as good as a temperature-controlled quartz
crystal. A Cesium standard is called a standard because it's how we define
time; when properly adjusted, it will remain in calibration quite well.

A GPS-DO usually contains a crystal oscillator which is controlled
(disciplined) to match the data coming in from GSP satellites, which
themselves contains Cesium standards which themselves are actively managed
by the US government. So it's like listening to WWV or one of the other
time signals on HF, but it uses the 1.4 GHz range and averages multiple
signals, so you get better results with smaller propagation-induced errors.
There are some Rubidium GPS-DO devices as well, some commercial and some
done by smart hams, but even those, as far as I know, contain a quartz
crystal oscillator which itself is disciplined by the Rubidium bulb
microwave resonance.

There's arguments about different ways of disciplining all of these
oscillators and if you're interested, look for the time-nuts mailing list or
read on febo.com, or read about Allan Deviation. But briefly: there are
multiple sources of noise, and if you measure the noise on different time
scales, you get different answers about how much noise there is. So,
roughly, phase noise is at one end of the chart and how far your wristwatch
is off at the end of the month is at the other end. What time scale you
care about determines what type of oscillator you use and how you measure
and take care of it.

A Rubidium oscillator does quite well on many of these time scales, better
than Cesium in some of them, but worse than a plain quartz crystal in
others.

Unfortunately, my guess is that buying an Rb standard and using it instead
of the quartz TCXO in the K3 would result in worse phase noise which
translates into a noisier band RX and noisier TX. Quartz is pretty much the
way to go for transceivers given the areas of concern that hams have.
(I.e., would you rather have 20dB less band noise or be able to get within
0.1 millihertz of the band edge instead of just 1 millihertz of the band
edge?)

More philosophically, we define time in terms of what Cesium does. Both Cs
and Rb physics packages have knobs to adjust for external magnetic field
(C Field), so both can be set wrong, but Rubidium bulbs age and change
frequency (though at an fairly well characterized rate), so you can't
substitute a Rubidium oscillator for a Cesium one. According to NIST,
gravity is a big effect as well, so if you ever move one of your
oscillators, its calibration field is toast. And finally, temperature
control is of the utmost importance, and those who are serious use multiple
nested containers for temperature isolation.

For ham use as a frequency standard, in terms of phase noise performance,
the algorithm used and the oscillator that's being disciplined (and how
often, as part of the algorithm) has the strongest influence.

For example, a GPS-DO is additionally affected by what satellites are in
view (the constellation), and the Trimble units are affected by the
changes more so than more expensive units which are designed as frequency
references, because they make abrupt changes when the constellation changes,
which is pretty much every few minutes as sats pass over.

The eBay Trimble units in particular have trouble with this. They were
designed for E-911 installations in cell sites, where they were used to
calculate distance via speed of light to a mobile unit. My (unfounded,
personal) belief is that it was more important that nearby units all had the
same idea of the time than that they have reduced noise on the shorter-term.
So they make more frequent adjustments to their internal quartz oscillators
that are comfortable for a frequency standard, though a number of smart
folks have figured out algorithm tweaks to mitigate this

Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] A LiFePO4 internal battery option

2011-03-27 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU
Those are 6.6v, so I guess you use a pair?

I've been using LiFePO4 in a lot of things, but haven't seen these that fit
in the KX1. At 700mAH they're a bit small, but the constant operating
voltage is nice.

You might take a look at these, which are available at Fry's and Amazon:
http://www.powergenix.com/?q=products/nizn-quick-charger

At 1.8v charged you get almost 11v out of 6 of them in the existing AA
slots. Of course, you have to remove them to charge. The self discharge
isn't as good as LiFePO4 but it's not bad either.

Also, with the noisy one (when I used it) I found that paying attention to

You can adjust the fldigi waterfall height with a menu.

Configure / Waterfall / FFT Processing, then there is a slider.
The max is 160 pixels. Would you like it bigger?

Also, you can do this:

Configure / Waterfall / Mouse, then check the box Left click replays
history

Then when you click on a signal that's been transmitting a while, it will
decode the last few seconds on the screen.

You might also like (on the same dialog) INsert text on single left click
and put in the string

Then it will put in a blue line with the frequency and mode every time you
click to another signal, so if you want to go back you can just click on

Here's some info to read:
  http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX1-Q6-question-td662532.html
and here, in this erratum superseded by the revision E manual which shows
the changeover:
  http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KX1_Owners_Manual_Errata_Rev_D-1.pdf

It seems that Elecraft went from a 2SC2166 to a 2SC5739 for RoHS compliance.

A side benefit is that the new part eliminates a thermal pad, shoulder
washer, and thus a potential for a short from the KX1 build.

Some have reported improved output on 20M with this part, albeit with the
usual warnings about too much power causing you trouble later if you don't
have a great match to your antenna, a strong possibility under the KX1
normal operating conditions.

2011-01-03 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

Julian,

Thanks for reporting this. I was on vacation and didn't notice. Elecraft
doesn't manage or run the Nabble archive.

If anybody has more questions, please contact me off-list; le...@wa5znu.org
or my callsign WA5ZNU at the usual arrl.net address will work.

I contacted Nabble and they restarted a server process which had somehow
failed. Mail from the past couple of days is now flowing back and forth FB.

As far as I can tell, all messages which originated from people posting via
the Nabble web pages were sent to all Elecraft subscribers; the Pending
notice was erroneous. However, messages coming in from the mailing list
were delayed in Nabble and are trickling in now.

(If you think about it, you can see these are related; if Nabble never
received the message you posted, it didn't know the post was a success.)

If anybody has questions, please contact me off-list; le...@wa5znu.org or my
callsign WA5ZNU at the usual arrl.net address will work.

Does it happen with all filters, if you have more than one quartz crystal

What are your filter center and bandwidth settings for the filters it

Have you performed the filter offset calibration from Appendix A?

Johnny,

It would be great if you could take a look at this:

http://www.500kc.com/

The FCC gave some hams and the ARRL an experimental license for the 500 KHz
band a couple of years ago.

There's a tremendous amount of info on antennas, propagation, equipment,
modulation, ERP, etc. from the knowledge this group gained. I'm sure any of
them would be happy to coordinate with you, as getting a ham allocation
there is their goal as well.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 Output Power

2010-12-05 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

For an easy way to get more power with internal batteries, you might look
into using PowerGenix NiZn rechargeables. They give have over 1.7v/cell and
are rechargeable. They're not as cheap as some of the NiMH rechargeables,
but that chemistry at 1.2v/cell is a poor match for the voltages needs of
the KX1; and they're cheaper than two sets of the 1.5V Energizer Lithium
primary (non-rechargeable) cells.

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: New Sherwood report

2010-12-01 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

Kok Chen provides some good references for CW transmit shaping, but
cocoaModem source isn't available for hams to look at.

fldigi also offers a choice between raised cosine and Blackman window for CW
TX, and the source is in the fldigi distribution at src/cw_rtty/cw.cxx
available from http://w1hkj.com/Fldigi.html

If you want to experiment with your own shaping code, you can compile fldigi
for Windows, Mac, or Linux.

I believe the shaping code is by Dave W1HKJ as it wasn't present in earlier
programs.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 and K1 Battery Notes

2010-11-02 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr WA5ZNU
I have had good luck lately with AA cells from PowerGenix.
They are Nickel-Zinc, and start at 1.83 volts fully charged and are
discharged at 1.8v.

With 6 of them in my KX1, the internal voltage was about 10.8 volts.

They don't have as good self discharge (about 10%/month) as the Lithium
primary cells, Eneloop or LiFePO4/Nano-phosphate, nor as good energy
density (about half at 1200mAH), but they can't be beat for internal
batteries and voltage.

They are available through Amazon, Fry's, and other such stores and
sites. I bought two packs of 4, each of which came with a wall charger.

 KX1:

I tested my KX1 key down with various battery packs and noted the output.
 This
was into an OHR QRP wattmeter and a dummy load. Here are the results, in
 descending order of output:

 Lithium-Ion Nanophosphate pack (4.6 AH) from Buddipole4.3W

 12v Pb Gel Cell
 5AH 4.0W

 Fresh Alkaline 8-cell AA
 pack 3.3W

 8 C Cell NiMH in spring-clip holder 5000mAH 2.8W

 spring 2.7W

8 cell AA NiMH spring Eneloop 2000mAH2.7W

8 cell AA NiMH 2650 mAH in spring loaded pack2.6W

Internal 6-cell pack with Lithium AA

 1.5 W

 K1:

I originally squeezed the 2650 mAH NiMH batteries into my K1's internal
 holder.
But they were always dead when I got a sudden schedule opening and good
 weather
for a little QRP portable. I replaced these with the lower-capacity 2000 mAH
Eneloop batteries that are supposed to retain 80% of their charge for an
 entire
year. Then I attached a wattmeter and dummyload to the K1, and let it call CQ
for two hours. At then end of this it was still putting out 5 watts and I
stopped the test--a couple hours of QRP portable is usually all I do.

Your mileage may vary, of course. While looking for battery articles online I
ran across one by a regular contributor to this list, who warned of the rather
substantial I**2R losses from spring-loaded battery holders. Also, I just
received the nanphosphate pack so I haven't used it in the field. I will
 report
back later after I have some experience with it.

[Elecraft] K3 init macro feature request

2010-09-20 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr WA5ZNU
I'd like to see a way to designate an init macro, like the callsign set.

For example, I like the rig to remember the TX TEST state and always
start up in TX TEST, but I recognize that such a feature might not be
popular enough to
warrant the development and codespace.

However, it's easy to express this in the K3 command set and if I could
specify a macro to run when the rig turns on, it'd be easy.
I suspect there may be other settings that could be customized in this way.

Re: [Elecraft] Some thoughts on the K3 as an emergency communications station

2010-08-29 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

I'd really like to see some LiFePO4 packs (or at least sheet-metal support
for them) for the Elecraft rigs. The K2 would be fairly easy, and the KX1
as well and probably the K1.

The K3 has room if there's no amplifier, but LiFePO4 shines in power
density, which is just want you need for the current peaks of a KPA3, so
some sort of rear bolt-on would be needed.

I use a 1200 mAH pack on my KX1, but that's too big to fit internally.

One good connection that I have come across is S/PDIF that is
available on the Icom IC-7800. It allows a connection between the

loops, no RFI, down to -144 dB.

S/PDIF provides an audio path with up to 20 bits of resolution (about
120 dB, with 1 bit being 6.02 dB), with 24 bits being an option by
using the extra 4 steering bits as data.

The standard sampling rate for S/PDIF is 48,000 samples per second
stereo, which would support almost 50 kHz of bandwidth on an baseband
I/Q channel. S/PDIF provides up to about 30 feet separation between
 equipment.

I built an amplitude-modulated IR fiber link using cheap parts and got poor
results due to fluorescent light leakage into the jacketed cables.

I've tried hard to find available chipsets for S/P DIF but come up short. A
well-shielded box or internal optical connection for radio would be a nice
thing to have for ham equipment.

Re: [Elecraft] Updated to 3.97, where did the auto notch go?

2010-06-20 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

No autonotch in data mode either, which makes sense.

Re: [Elecraft] KTCXO3-1

2010-06-16 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

I'm not a guru, but the TCXO is already implemented. The fraction-ppm
performance that might be gained by using some software isn't there, but the
TCXO itself is already more stable than the basic option.

Re: [Elecraft] Subject: Re: Calling CQ on PSK-31

2010-05-11 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

In addition to having fldigi decode the last few seconds of a qso you left
click and move you, you can also right click on another QSO in fldigi and it
will display the last few seconds in purple. Finally, you can set up fldigi
so that it puts clickable frequency markers in the receive buffer so you can
go back to a previous frequency you've left clicked on. (I had a hand in
designing these features and in some of the implementation.)

[Elecraft] 30m DX report with KX1 and K3

2010-04-09 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr WA5ZNU
I took my KX1 outside to see if I could track down a router-ish noise on
20m, and when I couldn't I switched to 30M as I was using a 30M MFJ
short loaded whip. I heard SM4OTI booming in. I put the KX1 on top of
the car for ground and gave Steve a call, but no joy. I came inside and
got an QRZ 5N answer with 5W from my K3 and SteppIR short dipole, and
completed the QSO with 25W.

So maybe the solar flare is clearing!

Re: [Elecraft] Using Buddi Pole Deluxe Antenna with K3

2010-04-07 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

You might try the Buddipole users list, which you'll find at
http://buddipole.com/documentation.html

The Buddipole is (usually) a shortened, high-efficiency antenna, which means
that it is relatively narrow-banded. It's fed off-center to bring the real
component of the impedance up, but on the lower bands it has a real
impedance of less than 50 ohms. So, it's best to use the coils to tune for
resonance (X or reactance = 0) and then use the ATU at that point to match
the real portion of the impedance. They also sell a matching transformer
which does a better job, as it's at the antenna end, but it's an additional
purchase.

So, I'd recommend putting the K3 ATU in bypass, setting up the Buddipole as
the instruction card says, and try moving the tips in and out a few inches
to see what the SWR is. If you use the ATU to lower the SWR when it's way
too high, the Buddipole won't be doing its job.

For vertical or horizontal, you'll find mostly that vertical is best for the
high bands and horizontal is best for the low bands for DX (though you'll
want to use a wire instead of an arm for the ground side). Horizontal can
work for 40M NVIS local communications where you plan to aim the signal
straight up.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware Production Release MCU 3.79 / DSP 2.54

2010-03-18 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

Hmmm, it worked for me just to run the Elecraft Utility and tell it to check
for new firmware.
The link I posted is to the K3 software news page which has all the changes,
instructions, etc.
It's not a link to a zip file directly.

Usually Elecraft sends out a mail message about the production and beta
releases, but for some reason that mail message is not showing up for me, so
I posted this note.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 71, Issue 15

2010-03-12 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU

I have a number of different USB RS232 interfaces, plus a four-port PCI
serial card (of which only two ports work under Linux).

Recently I tracked down a broadband noise to one of the USB ones I'd been
using to control a rotor. It didn't make noise when the device was in use,
but if a program opened the serial port for the rotor and left it open, it
would make noise. So it was difficult for me to track down, because only
certain programs would open the rotor port and leave it open.

[Elecraft] Pressing Reply and changing the Subject may cause your message to get overlooked

2010-02-26 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr WA5ZNU
If you press Reply in your mail reader and then change the subject, for
example, from Great Propagation on 6 Meters to For Sale XV50, your
message still has a secret In-reply-to field in it referring to the
original message you replied to.

Some mail mail readers use this In-reply-to header to place your
message back in its place in the original topic list, as a reply, even
though you changed the subject. Readers who might otherwise be
interested in your new For Sale topic won't see it, because it will
show up in the middle of the list of Great Propagation messages, were
it is likely to get overlooked

This threaded display feature is present both in mail reading programs
such as GMail and Thunderbird, and in web site archives such as Nabble.

So, in order to maximize the number of people who will see your messages
on *new* subjects, please start out with Compose or New Message
instead of Reply.

This is a personal request from me, and isn't endorsed by Elecraft.

Thank you,
Leigh/WA5ZNU
