[Elecraft] Comparing radios
I have a KX1 and the K1 and they are Keepers for me. I favor the K1 at times because it has more output. I keep the Elecraft rigs in the Living room by my Lazy boy chair and the are hooked up to my Gap Challenger Vertical. Now I favor the KX1 because of listening to SSB and Short Wave when there are not CW contacts available. Usually I take the KX! with my young wife and me to Fort McHenry National Park and clamp a MP1 vert. to a picnic table. I have a couple of 30 year old TenTec rigs in the radio room. But if I had to settle with only KX1 and K1 I could do it. When you talk about the K2 you are comparing apples with peaches! And I can understand you liking the K2 for one rig station. I would like to have a K2 but I would have to sell the K1 and KX1 and I do not intend to do that. The only antennas I have are the G5RV and the Gap and so the tuners in the Elecraft radios work fine. However, I do have the Elecraft T1 outboard tuner if I ever need it. Have not needed it even with the MP1 vertical at the park. Paul Gates, KD3JF Glen Burnie, MD Be a better sports nut! Re: [Elecraft] Just ordered a KX1, and have a question
Man, Oh, Man Don you said it right. I was so ignorant when I got back into soldering, that i was not aware of the different sizes of solder. I had and still have it... the .031 solder. The last kit I had built was a Heath Kit HW12 in the 60s. So to practice some soldering I ordered one of the in-expensive receiver kits from Ramsey. Using the .031 solder I totally destroyed the Pc board! g Now, I have all kinds of rolls of .015 solder and use it for practically everything. Also have some what I think is .022. I have a soldering station and use it at 700 F.degrees. Paul Gates, KD3JF Having 2 cataracts one on each eye I was smart enough to have Jerry McCarthy build my KX1 and later he added the 30/80 module for me. Today I passed the eye test for renewing my drivers license by the skin of my teeth so to speak. The License is good for 5 years so I am sure during that time the cataracts will be big enough so I can have them removed. I have no problem seeing in the daylight and do not drive at night. Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Marty, First of all, I believe .031 solder is too large a diameter for use on Elecraft products, especially the KX1. I use .015 with great success, and I do not recommend a larger solder than .020 for the KX1. The reason is that with the large diameter solder, there is not great control over the amount of solder applied - by the time the solder is molten, there is already too much on the connection. Just enough solder to fill the plated thru hole is adequate, although I like to see a very small fillet of solder with the edges of the solder tapering down to zero thickness on both the solder pad and the component lead to be certain everything has received adequate heat during the soldering process. See the soldering tutorial on the Elecraft website if you have any questions about what I am describing. Also, the 44 flux is a highly activated flux, there also seems to be a lot of flux residue when using it for soldering. The Kester 285 mildly activated flux is much better on untarnished components because it leaves the board cleaner - save the highly activated solder for working with components that have acquired a bit of corrosion and need the higher activity. OK, so you have some Kester 44 .031 solder that you would like to use on your KX1 - fine, use it, but be aware of the cautions about the amount of solder. If you find too much is applied, use solder wick to remove some of it. OTOH, If you are buying solder for the KX1, I recommend the Kester 285 in a .015 diameter (Multi-core is a great solder, but may be difficult to obtain). Many areas of the KX1 are quite dense with components and more care with soldering is required than for most of the other Elecraft kits. That does not answer the question of why Elecraft does not include solder with the kits like Heathkit used to do - I can't answer that, but I can offer some cautions based on my experiences repairing the KX1 - some builders have trouble because of inadequate heat when soldering (700 to 750 deg F is the best) and the application of too much solder are often encountered problems here. I have 'fixed' several KX1s by simply removing the excess solder and reheating the connections - that process takes about 2 hours to complete, so you figure the cost of a 'repair' caused by sloppy soldering - good solder is cheap by comparison. 73, Don W3FPR Marty Young wrote: Hello All: I ordered a KX1 and it was shipped Priority Mail on 7/23 and have not received it yet. Re: [Elecraft] 135 ft flat top antennas, again, ad infinitum
Hey George you said it right!! I have been reading all the email about what will work and won't. The best antenna I ever haad was the 130 ft Vee feeding it with 450 ohm ladder line. Now don't laugh, the length of the feedline was whatever it took from the center of the VEE to my shack! Then I hooked up the ladder line to tuner and 4to1 balun. It worked on every band fine! I would have that kind of antenna here but would have to move a couple of buildings. I live in an apt above the church and I just cannot swing it. I have thought about it a lot. I have the G5RV up at present. I do have made up a 40 meter Delta loop I would like to get up off of the deck but that will have to come after surgery. Next Tuesday I go in for a full replacement on my right knee. I had the left leg done a year ago and it is fine. Paul, KD3JF --- George [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My 2 cents worth is: Theory is one thing and actuality is another thing. I use a 130 ft inverted vee, fed with about 55 ft of 450 ohm ladder line. The apex of the vee is about 65 ft up. The ladder line stops at the eave of my house, just outside the shack, where I use a 4:1 balun. From the balun to the homebrew tuner, I use a 7 or 8 ft piece of RG 213. It works FB on all bands from 80-10 m, including 30 m, and is absolutely the best all band wire antenna I have used in my 51 yrs of hamming. It works especially well on 75 and 80 m. It would possibly work even better if I broke up (with insulators) the guy wire which is almost parallel to one leg of the vee. Also, the antenna is surrounded by several trees which are 15-25 ft higher than the antenna. I guess the moral to this is, don't let theory stop you from trying stuff. 73, N4ym ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Took the KX1 for a ride
My YL and I spent today Sat. at Ft McHenry National Park in Baltimore today. Took the KX1 with me and clamped the MP1 vertical to a picnic table bench. The folding chair that I have is very comfortable and heavy duty with a tray on the right side. So I put the kX1 on the tray and away I went. Switched the the KX1 to B mode for the keying and liked it very much. There is a closer park here in town and still have been thinking of trying the 44ft inverted vee on a pole for getting out better with the KX1 Gotta decide on the pole though first! Been thinking of strapping the pole with a couple of bungee straps. On the MP1 antenna the 16ft counterpoise works good for 20 and it is terrible on 40 so I need to remedy that. Glad to know Ron that you have a good soldering station I have the same one and use the 700o setting for my soldering. Paul, KD3JF EX: WA4JGI, WA8TER Central Maryland FM19qd (Map Grid Square) - Original Message From: Ron D'Eau Claire [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, March 10, 2006 3:02:51 PM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K2 Arrives - WTCPT question, DMM Question. DMM's I've got few DMM's from expensive Flukes to a cheap-o that arrived free with a parts order one time. Comparing them, electrically there are only two differences: speed and number of digits. Cheap meters typically have 3-1/2 digit displays. That's okay for some things, but I find myself wanting the resolution provided by a full four digit display. Cheaper meters take longer to display the value - up to 2 or 3 seconds compared to almost instantaneous display for the more expensive units. That's a function of the chip used in the meter. Accuracy of all of the meters is identical, within the resolution of their displays. It's amazing how cheap and accurate the voltage divider networks used for the range selectors are these days. Also, unlike the 'days of yore' all modern DMMs have a rather high input impedance, 10 Megohms. That's essential to avoid false readings because the meter loaded the circuit too much. We used to spend a relative fortune on a Vacuum Tube Volt Meters to get the sort of high impedance one expects from a DMM today. I mention it because there are some well-loved old relics from the past sill around that use real wiggly-needle d'Arsonval movements, such as the famous Simpson 260 Multimeters. Modern builders sometimes pick up. They do not have the low input resistance of modern DMM's. They are okay in circuits carrying significant current, but useless in high-impedance circuits. Unless you know something about the impedance of the circuit you're probing, they will lead you astray. Mechanical ruggedness is another consideration. I've got a Radio Shack meter that has taken a bit of a beating and still keeps on working just fine. But, undeniably, the Flukes and other high end meters are more rugged mechanically, especially when equipped with the various rubber boots and other protective accessories one can buy for them. I do enjoy the various ancillary functions modern DMM's provide, and I'd probably not consider a replacement that didn't include, as a minimum, capacitance and transistor testing. One meter I have will identify the transistor pinout and give me the hFe (gain) measurement automatically, so I can grab any strange unit from 'ye olde junque box' and stick it in the meter to find out how to wire it and what it will do in most circuits. SOLDERING 700F (375C) is a good temperature for soldering to Elecraft pcbs most of the time. I'd not go lower. If you are using desoldering braid or soldering to a large pad or one connected to the ground plane, you may want more. When hitting large pads or stuff on the ground plane, I jump the temperature to 800F (425C) or so. That's one of the great features of my Hakko 936 that I like: change the temperature with a twist of the knob. The tip follows the knob setting in just a couple of seconds. I real good clue to the proper soldering temperature is the dwell time. You debond pads and traces and damage components as much by excessive dwell time as by temperature, so a cool tip may be more dangerous than a hotter one. About 2 seconds is the longest I'd ever stay on any normal pcb solder pad: perhaps 3 or 4 seconds maximum on one attached to a large ground plane or other large metal. Re: [Elecraft] Coax Switch between two rigs
What you say is interesting! I have a new coax switch that I just purchased simply for being able to switch between my Icom 706 and K1. I only have one radio on at a time. I use my tuner to switch between the 2 antennas which is the Gap Challenger or W5GI G5RV. On the G5RV I can disconnect the coax outside the window I can ground both antennas from the tuner or simply disconnect the coax from both antennas from the tuner and in 10 years we have had one lightening strike and it did not harm the radio equipment. Now what you say is, that having a switch to switch between 2 radios with one antenna is asking for trouble. How so? I think what you are saying is the fear of keying a rig without an antenna hooked to it. If I do a rig receive comparison, I remove all mikes paddles, footswitches etc so I do not accidentally key up. As another fellow said there can still be a lot of signal on the shield/ground. Just not worth the risk. Re: [Elecraft] One more on the stupid thread
I will just chime in and give 2 experiences. We had moved to a farm house and I was trying to get a rope over a certain branch. I used a small hammer tied to the end of the rope and was throwing it up in the air to get over the branch. The hammer was coming towards me as I tried to move on icy ground, and I put my hands over my head. They protected my head but hit hard one of my finger nails. I got a needle and sterilized it and worked in around to get a hole in my nail to relieve the pressure. I was not 9 years old but 33 years old! I had a homebrew amp with 2-813 tubes. The cabinet was perforated aluminum. It looked like one of the 813s was glowing red so I had taken the top off and was talking on 20 meters I discovered the tube that was glowing red and decided just to set the top back on the amp. Instead one corner of the aluminum top dipped into the amp and touched the cap on one of the 813s. That was an exilerating experience. The perforated top went flying off to the left and my 104D mike went flying off to the right. I was thankful to be alive. I did not have a good feeling for about an hour. 2200volts at 500millamps! Incidently I still have the D104 mike and the last time I used it on a Ten Tec 544 Triton IV it worked very good. 36 years old. Well, here is one more. I was in northern Mich. in the winter and need to get on the roof of the house to make some adjustments on a antenna. The roof was full of snow and ice underneath so I climbed up a ladder and threw some salt on the pathway to the peak of the roof. I then got off the ladder and put my golf shoes on and climed up the roof. Very crazy thing to do. Of course i could cut one connector off and just solder the coax to the antenna but before i do that thought I would check. What I am trying to do is make up a 44' Dipole and feed it with coax for portable work when I go to a park, etc. Paul Gates, KD3JF K1 #0231 KX1 #1186 XG1 __ Yahoo! for Good Donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. http://store.yahoo.com/redcross-donate3/ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I have used the .032 but the .015 is a lot easier to work with for me. Pastor Paul, KD3JF --- Roy Morris [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Does the recommended list of solders to use mean that 60/40 .032 dia. Re: [Elecraft] K1 internal battery mods
FB on your mod for the speaker There are a lot of options a person can think of for a battery back outside of the K1. I got hooked on lithium batteries! g I have the latest set installed for a long, long time! For me I dislike re-chargable batteries for the K1. Could you not just take an outboard battery pack and plug it into the regular DC input of the K1? The L. batteries are not all that expensive because my wife can order them overnight from Office Depot at her office for a big discount for me. Pastor Paul, KD3JF --- Ron Pfeiffer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well I liked the idea of the internal battery for field use but I did not like the sound coming out of the little replacement speaker. So I got out my round file and I enlarged the original speaker hole in the battery bracket. I enlarged it more towards the center of the radio and towards the back of the radio. I then cut a notch in the corner of the original speaker so it would clear the post near the front-right. Placed the original speaker grill over the speaker to minimize vibration and placed the new battery cover on. Turned K1 on and once again that sweet K1 sound came forth from the radio. Next mod I want to do is add the same jack to the battery bracket as the K1 12V on the back panel. I will then terminate battery packs with matching plug. Then I can keep the packs external and charged. Use them at home by plugging directly into the back power connector and when I want to go to the field just put a charged battery inside the K1. I know there is an extra voltage drop by plugging into the back connector but I feel the convenience overrides the loss of voltage. Any helpful info or suggestions to what I have done would be greatly appreciated. Ron _ On the road to retirement? Re: [Elecraft] K1 internal battery mods
Ron, let me re-phrase what I said... It is a matter of preference for sure. But, I just do not like re-chargable batteries and that is just me personally. 9V against 12 volts and the regular rechargables do not last that long so you are constantly opening up the K1 and taking the batteries out to recharge them. Now having that said the newer rechargables like you indicated ... 2000-2300 mah will last longer on a charge. If I was going on vacation I probably would take a 7AMPHR sealed battery although I have 4 3.5X5 battery packs that are 12 volts at 2 AMPHR. Also have a battery pack for the laptop that plugs into the cig. lighter in car and I can charge that up to 13v. Then there is the battery pack for the toy race cars!! So thee are a lot of options. I do not go backpacking any more for I am 75 years old and am still recovering from a full knee replacement but I do spend a day at the Parks around here... My wife and I enjoy going to Ft McHenry National Park in Baltimore we go early and get a picnic table and then we have 2 folding chairs with a tray on the right side of each. I throw my 26ft antenna in a tree and lay the 33ft. counterpoise on the ground. Or I clamp the MP1 Vert. ant. on the picnic table, also have a small tripod that sits nicely on the picnic table for the MP1. I put my KX1 or K1 on the tray of my chair and ham in style! I like you, have never taken a outboard power with me to the park yet,, I say yet! You ought to try the Lithium batteries sometime for they really last a long time. While I am hamming My YL is getting caught up on her reading and we both enjoy ourselves. Of course we have a picnic lunch with us! We enjoy this as an activity on Saturdays when we are free from appts, etc. Pastor Paul, KD3JF --- Ron Pfeiffer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have never had problems with rechargeable batteries. I really like that the K1 is self-contained for going into the field. Just add key and wire and your on the air. I am not fond of carrying batterypacks around. I lose them or break off the leads, etc. Of course the Lithiums sound great and would last longer than the Nimh. The packs I just ordered from BatterySpace are 9.6V 2000mah at $12.95 each.
