All well and good in an ideal situation, but knowing the area that Eric lives in (Silicon Valley) there are all sorts of "alternatives" that may be available but in reality are vendors based on getting service (as it is popularly called "bandwidth") from Comcast and/or Verizon "behind the curtain". Up here (suburban Portland) I did lots of research on features, service and reliability before settling on the Comcast bundle of internet, voice phone, and Xfinity cable. Living in an already-wired apartment I didn't have much of a choice. I was fortunate enough to talk the management into letting me put up my VHF/UHF j-poles - I didn't want to press my luck by having more wire/cable run in. I had (where did I put it?) the direct phone number of the regional service manager but fortunately never had to use it. My one and only problem was resolved locally to my satisfaction the first time without "sturm und drang". Is there any reason why I cannot place the coax and the #4 copper wire in the same trench? Electrical reasons? RF reasons? For safety reasons it is advisable to separate the perimeter ground wire from any "utility" cables, including antenna cables. I would dig the trench to 12" or more, bury the ground wire, fill the trench halfway, bury the antenna cable, put a layer of some bright-colored heavy plastic over the cable (to identify it if necessary to dig it up again) and fill the rest of the trench. Put marker stakes around the perimeter. If you don't want to dig it by hand, rent a Ditch Witch. Do not forget to call Locating Services (8-1-1) to mark buried utility pipes and lines on your property before you dig - they are funded by the utilities. I will start gathering info and the tower and the beam for submittal and get back to you. Thank you so much for offering to help. Further info - Utah does not have a "by right" statute such as other states have, specifying a height at or below which the jurisdiction cannot restrict height. It does have a PRB-1 type statute that requires local administrations to grant "reasonable accommodation" by "least restrictive means" - which are legal terms that can vary amongst jurisdictions. I am a great fan of getting those limits adopted, which involvs hard work with legislatures. I don't know what your local zoning codes specify, but in those cases where I have written or reviewed local zoning codes, I have tried to get ham radio antennas exempted from Conditional Use Permits or Special Variances by a process called Administrative Permits that don't involve neighborhood hearings, notifications and fees, especially if there's a "by right" statute. Something that you need to check into. If you are required to get a Conditional Use Permit or to apply for a Variance and you need legal assistance - check out Kenneth D. The Comm Pilot is Bluetooth paired with my mobile phone for hands-free operation and has a 3.5 mm "Audio Jack" that permits me to feed audio from external devices with a suitable cable. The audio feels like it's inside my head, and the aids' primary function of boosting external sounds is reduced slightly but not eliminated. Batteries in the aids last about a week if disconnected while I sleep, and the CommPilot is put on charge at that time as well. Not much of a learning curve. I don't remember the actual case that Doug mentioned other than it wasn't one of mine :) but I do remember that there have been several. For other violators, there is a provision in the Communications Act that requires the FCC to determine if the conviction bears on the moral qualifications to become or remain an FCC license holder, and there are provisions in other statutes that bar someone from holding or receiving a license if in arrears to court-mandated payments.. As far as the present situation, what the notice said (in plain language) is using a radio while planning or committing a crime is a crime itself. Has nothing to do with the content as long as it does not involve planning or committing that criminal act. Yes, there are limits to First-Amendment-protected speech. The main reason that we see it at all in the US is than manufacturers dealing in world-wide markets do not want to have two different production lines, * My Ford sedan is built to metric standards... :) During my tenure, FCC rules and standards were rewritten to express dimensions in metric, but the conversion from USCU wasn't smooth. For instance, one specification for certain antenna heights was "20 feet above ground". So what did the FCC do? Changed it to "6.1 meters (20 feet) above ground". Why not an even 6 meters?? Everyone still refers to it as the "20 foot rule". The neglected metric unit, although not past of the SI, is the gradian (grad). 100 grads to a quadrant. 400 grads to a full circle. 1 grad = 0.9 degree. [Elecraft] [K2] Alinco EMS-14 mic with K2?
For the 15 or so years that I have used my K2 the mic I used was an Adonis AM-308, a Kenwood-compatible desk mic. It gave me good service but failed recently, and is no longer available. It was replaced with the Alinco EMS-14 desk mic which appears to be a re-branded AM-308 (to the point where the pc board in the mic base carries the "AM-308" label). The cable pin-out on the 8-pin "Foster" connector is identical. The only difference appears to be that the Adonis mic used two AA batteries while the Alinco mic draws its power from the rig's +V on the mic connector. It should be plug-and-play compatible using the cables that worked with the Adonis mic but unfortunately the mic does not activate the K2. Does anyone have any experience using the Alinco EMS-14 mic? 73 de K2ASP - Phil Kane Elecraft K2/100 s/n 5402 >From a Clearing in the Silicon Forest Beaverton (Washington County) Oregon __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Part 15 sets the minimum standard for RF emissions from devices that do not require individual or blanket station licenses. If they don't comply, they can't be used legally or be marketed (a "term of art" that covers manufacture, sell, offer for sale, ship, modify, and in some cases, use). Compliant devices must be certified by the manufacturer and labeled as meeting those standards. There are certain exemptions for home-brew ham equipment and school projects. Regulatory law is clear - even if the emissions from a device comply with the levels mandated in Part 15, if they cause harmful interference (another "term of art") to licensed/authorized communications, the operator of the Part 15 device is required to cease such operation until the interference is abated. Conversely, as many have noted, if the Part 15 device gets interfered with by signals from a licenses/authorized station or device, it's "tough". What part of "must accept" is not clear? A good part of my early legal career was devoted to assisting and defending hams against claims of interference to consumer-level entertainment equipment. Much of that has gone away, because the European Union has regulations about how such equipment must reject outside signals and reputable manufacturers are adhering to those standards if they want to sell in the worldwide market. The FCC has kicked around establishing similar standards for decades with no action, relying on the broad "must accept" to protect the public. When is the last time that we here have had to deal with a substantial claim of causing TVI ("Tennessee Valley Indians)?
