Re: [Elecraft] KX3 lithium ion polymer internal battery
This question relates to the wiring inside the KX3 and not about battery technology… I did not write the question well. I have received back a lot of good advice on batteries, all correct and thanks, yet I do want to know about the KX3 wiring if you can help me please. For interest only, the battery I have made is not a LiPo (never used even in my RC gliders, as they do catch fire) it is a lithium Ion. The polymer part refers to it not being an 18650 cell (as used in laptops, power tools and automobiles) but instead the flat 3.7v cells as found in tablets and phones. I may well have used the wrong terminology. Anyway, can anyone help me with the wiring. Can I attach the battery to pins number 1 and 3 of the 10pin P3 connector ? I have asked Elecraft direct and while waiting on their reply thought I would post here. Hope you can help Thanks to all who have responded and 73 Kind Regards, Rob Walker M5REW On 4 Oct 2021, at 18:09, Rob Walker wrote: I have made myself a 14.8v lithium ion polymer battery, with battery management system and audible alarm, that fits inside the KX3. [Elecraft] KX3 APRS and AX.25
Howdy! I'm quite intrigued by what the KX3 can potentially do as an SDR, and am considering trying to get one. There are some downsides to the KX3 I've noted (price and lack of 70cm being two big ones), but the possibilities it opens up are pretty awesome to imagine. I've been playing around quite a bit with packet (AX.25 and APRS over 2m thus far) and am having a hard time figuring out if the KX3 offers advantages over a traditional transceiver's data port. They both /appear/ to require a TNC, although I'm not entirely sure if that's actually the case with the KX3. Is anybody doing 2m AX.25/APRS over their KX3 who could share some details about their setup? I'm really close to sticking with a simple VHF/UHF mobile instead of the KX3 as packet is a majority of what I'm interested in right now; then upgrade to a KX3 when I have the time to get into HF - but if the KX3 offers true advantages in this space, I may get my forever radio in a KX3 now... Re: [Elecraft] K3 Autotuner malfunction
After getting some data, and considering what others had to say, the answer seems to be that there is no malfunction. The behavior that I am seeing is likely because the mismatch with the antenna is marginal. At least my K3 is not very sensitive to VSWR less than 1.5:1, and it reports a VSWR of 1.0:1 when other devices are measuring something more. In general it reports a lower VSWR than any analyzer I have tried. Addressing my "problem" on 40 meters, there are good values in the tuner memories for the whole band, but if I change from the high end of the band to the low end, the VSWR sensed by the K3 is not so bad, and I suspect that the K3 doesn't bother to switch to the values in memory for the new frequency. I might like to see less than 1.5:1.0, but the K3 isn't bothering with it. On 80m, my antenna actually does need a bit of tuning. There has been some trouble auto-tuning to get a good match with the tuner around the part of the band where the tuner capacitor needs to switch from the antenna side to the transmitter side or vice versa. This is just a theory, but possibly the K3 sensing of the match is more sensitive depending on which side the capacitor is on. Maybe it makes a mistake sometimes when the SWR is relatively low, like less than 3.0:1. The capacitor seems to end up on the antenna side when there would be a better match if it switched to the transmitter side. I may mess around on 80 and see if I can learn anything else or confirm this. Regardless, my tuner works, and if you use it correctly, there is barely a hiccup. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Autotuner malfunction
Don, At first (months ago), I looked at the antenna impedance at the rig and thought that it was a problem. It was an 80m horizontal loop fed with 450 Ohm line. It would be problematic to change the feed line length, so I did some calculations and found that 300 Ohm line would provide a better match on most bands. The line was changed and the loop length trimmed a bit (not enough). The VSWR was measured across the HF spectrum with a good network analyzer. The result looked good. On 80m, SWR ranged between about 7:1 to 3.5:1. On forty, it was between about 4:1 and less than 2:1. After reading your message, I checked the impedance and SWR again a couple of ways, and although it isn't as good as from the network analyzer, the data agrees pretty well. If anything, the SWR looks better now. The bottom line is that the impedance isn't bad, and I barely need the tuner on 40m at all. In fact, the tuner might be confused by the low SWR, I suppose. Using a tuner with a good load breaks the rule, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" The antenna impedance magnitude is between 25 and 80 Ohms in both bands. I could email you the SWR plot I made when the new feed line was put up, if you are curious. Too bad I didn't measure S-parameters. 73, Rob -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Autotuner-malfunction-tp7604565p7604624.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3 Autotuner malfunction
I have been having problems with my K3 auto tuner using an antenna that has worked well and been tuning easily for nearly all bands. My first reaction was to assume the antenna, an 80m horizontal loop, was the problem, but I am now convinced otherwise. To prove that, I did the following: - took the antenna down, refurbished it, and replaced the feed line (not wasted energy); - tried other baluns; - confirmed that my LDG tuner has no problem tuning; and - tuned it manually with the K3 tuner. The problem behavior is this. On 40m and 80m, the K3 will not find a decent SWR (<1.7:1) when auto-tuning. On 80m it has done fine tuning one direction across the band and failed going the other direction over a significant portion of the band. This is repeatable. On 40m, the SWR for the antenna system at the rig end is only about 1.7:1 at the low end and 1.4 at the high end. At the low end, the K3 tuner will not find a match under when the ATU TUNE button is used, except in particular circumstances. Using the menu system to check tuner values, it ends up with the capacitor connected at the antenna side at a low value and with a low value of series inductance. Effectively this is near the bypass mode. Hitting the ATU TUNE button to cause a long tune cycle makes no difference. Manually, the capacitor can be switched to the transmitter side, and a match near 1:1 is easily set by adjusting L and C. Today I cleared the memory on 40m and manually tuned at a low frequency in the band. Then, moving up the band at 2KHz intervals, the auto tuner was able to quickly fine tune the match and a full set of memories was created. This means that I can work 40m without a problem without hitting the ATU TUNE button, but if the ATU TUNE button is hit after a significant frequency change, the match is lost. Therefore, the key problem with the auto-tuner behavior is that when ATU TUNE is used in a case where there is no nearby memory, or a large frequency change has been made since the last transmission, the tuning algorithm apparently does not try switching the capacitor from the antenna side to the transmitter side, and the tuner does not thoroughly look for a match. Is this abnormal behavior for my unit, or is this a quirk of the system? Re: [Elecraft] K2 / KPA ALC problem. Are power levels sensed at the same point?
Chris, I have been monitoring this thread, since I have had some similar problems with my K2. My recent experience may help you. In the K2, amplifier gain is in the ALC loop. When you switch from low power to high (go from less than 10W to greater than 10W), the KPA100 gain changes the ALC behavior and may be the source of many of the differences you see between low and high power operation. If the KPA100 needs some adjustment, that could also be a factor. In my case both calibration/alignment and gain were causing problems. I recalibrated the KPA100 first and noticed some improvements immediately in output power on the high bands and in the agreement between set power and output power. Note that I did this even though I believed that I had taken care in the original calibration. Maybe things change over time, or perhaps I did a better job this time, but the effort was rewarded. Once the recalibration was done, I followed Don's suggestion and adjusted R98 to reduce the ALC loop gain. Prior to adjusting R98, my K2 would hunt endlessly at some power levels, jumping up and down by significant amounts and never converging to the set power level. At other power levels, it might settle down at a value that wasn't as close to the set value as you might like. After adjusting R98, the K2 always converges to the set value with a relatively small error, because the ALC steps are smaller. You mentioned that you don't have a power meter to use for adjustments to the KPA100. I have two, but after a comparison, decided instead to use a voltage measurement across a good dummy load to calculate power. This method seemed to give me the most reliable result across the range of interest. If you have a good dummy load, you can use a scope to measure peak-to-peak voltage or use a diode detector to get a DC voltage off the dummy load. The Elecraft 20W load is very good and has a built in provision to take a DC voltage measurement for conversion to power. With that taken care of, you can adjust your amp with little trouble. Initial receiver testing on 40 Meters (pg 67) can barely hear XG2/XG3 @ 50uV. I've injected the 50uV from the XG2 directly to the input of the rcv. mixer Z6 @ R73, no change. VFO Input to the receive mixer looks good on a scope, no IF signal to be found at pin 1 of J12. Q22 voltages nominal. I've eyeballed all solder connections and Caps and Resistors and confirmed values. We have confirmed the injection and testing procedure on a known good K2, lots of IF signal at J12 pin 1. Re: [Elecraft] (KX3) Voltage display (solved)
Ok, I feel like an idiot. Operator error. Who knew there was a display for BAT and P/S? I just turned the knob to the left to read the P/S instead of the internal battery. [Elecraft] (KX3) Voltage display
I've been having a weird problem with my KX3. No matter what voltage I plug into the external power jack, the display will briefly show the correct voltage and then it will show 10.4V. I've measured the voltage at the barrel tip on the cord and it's either 12.9V (if on a gel cell) or 14.4V if I use the shack PS. In either case the KX3 internal display shows 10.4V after briefly showing 12.9V or 14.4V. FW 1.41, all options including internal battery charger. It didn't used to do this, any help would be greatly appreciated. 73, Rob NV5E __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Problem Firmware and K3
I've done dozens of beta firmware updates and never had a problem. My K3 is over 4 years old (s/n 1417). I've also never had a problem loading firmware onto the P3, KPA3 or KX3. I've used Windows XP Pro, Win 7 Pro, prolific chipsets, fltd chipsets and some unknown chipset in the Triplite/Keyspan USB/Serial adapter I have now. Firmware loading problems are the exception, not the rule. I buy lots of parts from Mouser, but at work and for myself. Many components have doubled in price in the last 3 or 4 years. The sooner you order it, the sooner you get it. They don't charge your credit card until they ship and you can cancel the order at anytime. In fact, they'll send you an email right before it's shipped to confirm everything. There is no downside to ordering now if you want one. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 LiNiCo 12v 3.6 Ah Battery Pack
Phil, Several of us on the list have bought these. John Harper, AE5X, loaned me his CBA II battery capacity tester and I've been running tests on the various batteries here. This battery provides about 5Ah of useful capacity, just about half it's rating. The up side is, it weighs 11.3 oz and will last a long time at the test current of 350mA. That's about what I figure average current will be on the KX3 with casual operating. Interestingly, my 7Ah SLA measured out at 7.2Ah, my 1900mAh Eneloops (cheap blue ones from Costco, $14 for 10!) measured out at 1.9Ah. I'll publish the discharge curves in a week or two and post a link here. I'm trying to get ahold of my friends LiFePO battery to test. 73, Rob NV5E > From: dpsa...@tx.rr.com > To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net > Date: Wed, 9 May 2012 10:52:06 -0500 > Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 LiNiCo 12v 3.6 Ah Battery Pack > > This looks like an interesting battery pack. > > www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170794794136&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNAFP:US:1123 > > Phil - AD5X > > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Kit Shipping Schedule Theory
As far as the spreadsheet goes, it's heavily biased towards those who ordered early. There is no way that they are 3/4 of the way through delivering factory built K3's. They are not even up to 45 minutes after ordering started. No units were shipped this past week as far as I can tell. No one has updated the spreadsheet to show that they've received shipping notice from Elecraft in over a week. I don't think Elecraft is shipping factory kits first because they make $100 more dollars, that's a nominal amount for the amount of tech time to assemble them. I think they just need to get the kinks out of the kitting process and make sure they have a clear manual that the average ham can follow. I don't know what the most recent delay is, but I hope it's resolved soon because I'm the next one on the factory built list! :) Meanwhile, having fun playing with the batteries, case, antennas I've ordered to go with the KX3. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Right Side Panel Scratched
I think an auto body shop would have a hard time matching the texture and I doubt they could paint it for less than the cost of the panel from Elecraft. That being said, the front panels of my K3, P3 and KPA500 all had flaws in the finish from the factory. The K3 front panel had a paint drip, the P3 front panel silkscreening was messed up on the "MKR A" label and the KPA500 front panel had a tiny grain of something under the paint. Elecraft replaced the front panel on the K3, but I didn't bother with the other two, I just live with because in use it's fairly minor. Re: [Elecraft] Power Supply?
The KPA500 has plug in power supply. Is there a different standard for a power supply that's integrated vs. a stand alone unit? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Kits
Jim, I agree with you, I'd rather have it right than right now. But it's easy to put an update on the shipping status page saying that delivery is delayed. It could be a supplier issue or correcting the manual or just being overwhelmed with orders. No problem at all, like I said, I waited 5 months for the K3. It's not the delay, it's not the not knowing that I mind. I don't think anyone has received a kit or even shipping confirmation. I really wish Elecraft would give a realistic ship date instead of stringing us along. I don't mind waiting, I waited 5 months for my K3, just tell me a realistic date. I ordered my kit early the first day that they were offered and no word yet. Re: [Elecraft] Shipping Rates
Chuck, there is a limit, but it's 70 lbs which is the limit for anything shipped by the USPS. Like you, I'm a big fan. I use the Priority Mail flat rate boxes all the time. If you pay for the postage online you can print the label, get signature confirmation, save a few cents and you can just hand it to your postman, no trip to the Post Office necessary. The package is there in just 2 or 3 days. The one time that it took longer than that, about a week, they refunded the postage to the credit card that I used to pay online. I wish more people would use them. Re: [Elecraft] Buddipole and K3
Henry, I have a Buddipole that I've used with both the K2 and K3. What I like about it is its compactness. You can pack it up and stick it in a suitcase - no problem. I take the Buddipole, tripod, and switching power supply in my suitcase; and pack the K3, paddle, and some cables in the "Rose" carrying case. I've used it a couple of times on trips to New York. The Buddipole has these coil-tap-clips that are (quite frankly) a pain in the butt. Supposedly, you're going to take the time to set it up, change the taps, for every band you use. Nope. I don't work that way. So, I have a small MJF mobile antenna tuner/SWR meter that I bring with me. I found that there are two tap positions on the coils where using the tuner I can get good results on 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12 and 10 meters. The first position is for 10, 12, 15, 20; the second position is for 30 and 40. Since I always end up using the Buddipole on the ground, I never set it up for horizontal (e.g dipole) configuration. At that height, it's an NVIS antenna. Instead, I put the center-conductor-connected element vertical, and the braid-connected-end horizontal. In other words, it's a compromise ground plane. It works about a good as mobile antenna. The main benefit is its portability. Don't expect it to work better than any other shortened, end-fed-coil-loaded antenna. It won't. But, it will work just as well. 73, Rob K6RB - Original Message - From: "Henry Carr" To: Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2011 10:35 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Buddipole and K3 > Does anyone have experience operating with the Buddipole and the K3? [Elecraft] problem addendum
When I pull the stereo phones plug on either radio and plug a headphone into that jack, everything sounds clean. So, whatever is going on is apparently happening inside the DXD. Very strange. [Elecraft] K3 SO2R audio problem
I have two K3s set up for SO2R using a DX Doubler. Each radio has the Top Ten cable for a K3 with a PTT, key, mic and phones plug on one end. When everything is set up and I plug my headphones into the DX Doubler's phones jack, I hear a bit of hum on the audio regardless of whether the audio switch is in Radio 1, Both, or Radio 2 position. When I send with the right radio or left radio, I hear a hummy audio. However, if I plug the headphones into either radio's phones jack, everything sounds perfect. No hum. No hummy sidetone audio. If I plug it back into the DX Doubler, and key radio 1 while the audio switch is in radio 1, and I pull the interface cable from radio 2 out of the DX Doubler socket, it all sounds fine. Same with the opposite situation, key and monitor radio 2, pull the interface for radio 1, and have headphones plugged into DX Doubler phone socket. Looking at the DXD schematic, the audio from each radio is fed to the DXD phone socket with no active devices in the audio chain. It is strictly a switch and relay. So, physically, the two radio's audio outputs (audio 1, audio 2 and ground) are fed into the Radio 1 and Radio 2 interface sockets. The grounds on both radios are joined and the DXD's audio switch controls two DPDT relays that either serve just radio 1, both, or just radio 2 audio to the phone socket. Clearly what I am hearing on the DXD is coming from stereo phones jack back into the DXD, or somehow getting created in the DXD. Monitoring the phones jack on the front panel I hear only clean stuff. Does anyone have any clues as to why the audio coming out of the stereo phones rear jacks should be interacting this way when being routed through the DXD? Re: [Elecraft] Trans World Antenna
This is a knock-off of an antenna offered by Force 12 a few years ago. I had one. It worked okay. It is basically a vertical dipole with feed-point lumped inductance that is tapped by switching a relay box. It is shortened, so the t-bars provide added end capacitance. Unlike the BuddiPole, you don't have to mess with the coil taps, manually. You can sit at the radio and turn the rotary switch. But, it is not as portable as the BuddiPole, either. So, I currently have a BuddiPole which I sometimes take with me and the K3/100 when I travel. I use the BuddiPole in conjunction with a small MFJ transmatch. So, I use maybe two different tap postions on the coils for 10 through 40. Any losses due to high SWR at the feedpoint are more than compensated for by the convenience of not having to play with those flimsy tap gizmos. Re: [Elecraft] SSB transmit audio - Where's the punch?
The K3 has sufficient equalization to tailor the sound of any microphone, the external equalizer is completely unneeded in my opinion. My cheap-o computer gaming headset sounds really good (through the monitor) and gets great reports on the air. When chasing DX or during a contest I'll turn the compression up to 25. I've heard my signal through a couple of different radios that have their output online. The audio is surprisingly good. Setting the compression that high really makes a huge difference in average output and it makes a big difference on the other end. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - SPE Expert 1K-FA and ALC
I agree with Guy and Vic. It is not good to load up an amp and use AGC to tamp it down. Lord knows there are enough bad sounding stations already on the air, especially on sideband. Rob K6RB - Original Message - From: "Vic K2VCO" To: Sent: Saturday, May 15, 2010 11:03 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - SPE Expert 1K-FA and ALC Sorry, with all due respect this is HORRIBLE advice. I won't argue with those that say that the ALC should be connected for its protective value. But it should not be depended on to control output level -- the exciter should be adjusted to produce approximately the drive required for full output. The SPE Expert may have an exclusive design, but it is not exclusive enough to include a time machine so that it can know how loud the operator is planning to talk, and it doesn't control the delay inherent in the exciter's ALC circuitry. The result is guaranteed to be increased distortion. [Elecraft] K3/DVD hum problem solved
I've been battling what appeared to be a ground loop problem when I joined the two K3s using a DX Doubler. I would hear low-level hum on both audio outputs, and it got louder when either was keyed. Tonight, I hooked up the radios to separate dummy loads and removed all I/O except RS-232, ACC, key in. No change. Put both radios in "test" mode and still heard low level hum but the higher level hum upon keying was not so noticeable. In TX Normal mode, again, I noticed an interesting thing - at 10 watts out into the dummy load, the hum on keying was lower but would jump to louder as soon as I started raising the power output passed the LPA to HPA threshold (around 15 watts). But, it did not get louder when I continued to raise the power to 100 watts. So RF feedback was ruled out. It appeared to be DC current related, since that will jump as the threshold is crossed. Both radios had been DC sourced from a common 30 amp power supply figuring that only one would be transmitting at a time so it should handle it. My next step was to separate the two radios from a common DC power source. I used two 30 amp supplies, one to each. Bingo! No more hum, no more hearing radio one in radio two when one was keyed and vice-versa. What threw me at first was I had a similar problem with the DX Doubler using two FT-1000s, and they didn't share a common DC source. That time, the problem was a ground loop in the audio chain. So, isolation transformers worked. This time, with isolation transformers, there was no change other than loss of frequency range and volume. Re: [Elecraft] Any Consideration of a Receive Only K3?
Maybe just a software change to disable transmit for areas where unlicensed persons can't have one. I agree, the cost savings of leaving out the transmit circuitry is not worth the redesign effort. The K3/10 is not outrageously priced compared to other high end SW receivers. [Elecraft] K2/100 for sale
As I wrote, yesterday, I have to sell the K2/100 to raise the funds I need for another K3/100. I posted an FT-1000 on eBay, yesterday, and it sold in less than 10 hours! I have gotten just one response on this reflector. I am anxious to get the second K3 for my station, so I don't want to wait. I can post photos of the radio (as I did with the one who responded), but if it's not spoken for by tonight when I get home from work (around 6:30 PM), I'm going to list it on eBay, too. I'm having way too much fun with the first K3 to wait patiently for the K2/100 to sell (hi). The price is $950 for the K2/100 with NB and SSB modules. The NB is still in kit form - uninstalled. I have all the original manuals and a report from Elecraft from when the original owner sent it in for a repair. If you're interested in buying it, please email me directly. Thanks. [Elecraft] K2/100 for sale
I have a K2/100 with SSB option and an (unbuilt/uninstalled) noise blanker option. It was sent to Elecraft by the original owner just before I bought it, and fully checked out. I bought it about 3 years ago and have used it only for a few trips (Hawaii and twice to New York) with a Buddipole antenna. It works just great. I'm selling it in order to raise the cash to buy a second K3/100 for my SO2R contest station. A new K2 comparably equipped would cost about $1,250. I'm asking $950. I have the original manuals and the unopened NB kit. It has only been used a few times, by me, and only on CW. I have listened to phone with it, and it appears to work just fine. I don't have a microphone for it, and those who know me know that I'm not a big "phone" fan. If you're interested, contact me at k...@baymoon.com . Re: [Elecraft] philosophical discussion
Hello Don, Thank you for the reply. Thank you to the others who also replied to me with info and links. Have a lot of things to think over :) Could the gentleman in VK3 or VK4 (RFenabled)who emailed me please resend your email address so i can respond to you please... i seem to have lost your email from the system here whilst i was formulating a reply... oops ! Don, thanks for the construction comments. The roads in NZ are a little rough on vehicles and equipment :) We tend to look after the motorhome so hopefully all will be well with the electronics inside. >From some of the comments made to me it seems i should at least consider expanding my horizons to the K3. Great to share in the passion people have for the Elecraft products :) Thanks again to all for the very useful comments, pictures and links. [Elecraft] philosophical discussion
Hi, Have been following some of the discussions here with interest. Thanks for the friendly and positive way you deal with topics of all sorts. First of all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the team at Elecraft and any every one else in the group. My interest in Ham Radio is varied. I like the K2 for it's frugal use of DC power. I use radios in a portable realm sometimes, in the motorhome, at ILLW and Field Days.. . of course they sometimes get plugged in at home as well lol. Mainly SSB, but my CW is improving. So like all i seek the ideal radio... a go anywhere, yet still sophisticated enough to work as a base radio. A good Rx is important to me. It needs to sound smooth to the ear for extended use. The radio also needs to be stable enough for data use Currently running a FT897 as a utility radio and an old IC 740 as a field day or ILLW radio. The cool features and portability of the 897 are great and the Rx performance of the old Icom seem to be great for ILLW and Field Days, well here in New Zealand anyway, lol. Have thought to upgrade to a more highly spec portable QRP radio that can be used with an amplifier on base or in the motorhome and of course stand alone in the field. So my question is... i guess... does anyone use a K2 or K3 in a Motorhome (is that an RV in your language)? Is it tough enough for the mobile environment? Do people use the K2 or K3 as a Field Day station or Dxpedition radio? Is a K2 suitable for use on a base station with usual long wire or yagi antennae? I know some of this topic has already appeared in various magazines etc, but would value your insights. Your time is valuable, but if you could spare me a couple of lines re your experiences with using the radios that would be great. Don, Thank you very much, that was it! [Elecraft] Front Pannel Hand Mic (HM2)
I have a brand new K3 that I just completed this past week (with a little help from the reflector, thank you!). Now I am having a problem with the 8 pin mic connector on the front, neither the Hand Mic nor the pro-set work with it (using the Elecraft supplied adaptor). I was able to connect the mic from the headset to the rear of the K3 and confirm that I can in fact transmit voice. I have MIC SEL set to FP.H (I've also tried FP.L) and MIC+LIN ON. Is there another setting that I am missing to enable the Hand Mic on the front of the unit? The PTT does work on the FP Mic input as I was able to use the Hand Mic to key and transmit CW and SSB with the headset connected to the back.
