Re: [Elecraft] WWV Clocks -- It's really WWVB

2006-04-04 Thread Robert McGwier
Twice a year, I take my clocks out to the back porch and out of my
shack/office. That is around the time of DST/ST switches. The rest of
the year, my "Atomic Clock" from LaCrosse is always in perfect sync to
the ability of my eye to detect. I always do it after the switch
because I never remember to do it before the switch!. In central NJ,
FN20rg, in eight years of owning this clock, I have never once had
this procedure fail: back porch with full western exposure, one night,
the clock resets and from then until the next change over, it keeps
great time.

After acquisition, it seems to do some kind of matched filtering for
"what it expects" to stay synchronized and gets better Eb/N0 performance
as a result. I have repeated this every time I need to replace a
battery or change ST/DST.

Incidentially, it is _WWVB_ on 60 kHz, not WWV or WWVH on HF that is used by
these "radio controlled clocks" for periodic time checks, usually once a day
during the early morning hours (local time).

Despite your short distance to WWVB, you still might be experiencing poor
reception due to local interference sources. Computer monitors, switching
power supplies, AC operated motors, and thunderstorms tend to generate a
lot of 60 kHz noise.

I'm 1622 miles east of WWVB and own a WWVB-based frequency standard / UTC clock
of my own design. Even at this distance, when proper receiving techniques are
used, reception of WWVB is generally excellent, day or night.

Hi guys,

Been a while since I last kept up with the list. You were a great
source of help back when I built K2 #1133. Now I have #5226 and have
completed the second section of construction. The receiver works, I can
hear stations on 40. Yesterday I listed to Mid-Cars, Southcars, and
Eastcars. But they were only moderatly loud and I had AF gain full out.
On the IC-756 Pro they were booming.

On the radio I thought the AGC voltage might have been too high. 3.80
volts on the nose. T-34 tunes very well, as do L-1 and L-2. Every other
test and alignment to this point was well within specs. Any ideas as to
why it is not hearing well? Or should I not be concerned at this stage of
construction and press on to stage 3.

[Elecraft] Off topic

2005-11-05 Thread Robert McGwier
This is off topic but Frank and Wayne and Eric know each other and
Frank is an Elecraft owner and enthusiast:

On December 22 at Carnegie Hall, the New Jersey Composer's Guild will
present "Answer to Job, An Alternative Holiday Concert".Frank
Brickle (AB2KT) is the secretary of the Composer's Guild of New Jersey.

He has composed an opera which will be performed during this concert:

http://www.williamanderson.us/index_body.html

Frank's opera is a Townley Mystery Play. Mystery plays or miracle plays
are medieval religious dramas based on stories from the Bible. Mystery
plays were performed around the time of church festivals, reaching their
height in Europe during the 15th and 16th Centuries. A whole cycle
running from the Creation to the Last Judgment was performed in separate
scenes on mobile wagons by various town guilds. Four English cycles
survive: Coventry, Wakefield (or Townley), Chester and York. They
were intended for the common person. In many cases, it was the only
way people could hear the stories of the Bible in their common tongue,
rather than in Latin. Frank's composition, "The Creation of the World"
will be performed during this concert.

The tickets are not yet on sale, but you may visit the Carnegie site and
soon enough the "Buy Tickets" button will open.

http://www.carnegiehall.org/article/box_office/events/evt_7356.html?selecteddate=1005

Frank is a member of the American Radio Relay League SDR Working Group,
a GnuRadio enthusiast, contributor to the ARRL/HSMM/SDRWG OFDM modem
project, AMSAT member and a member of the Eagle/Phase 3 Express
Software Defined Transponder and CC Rider Team for Eagle, coauthor of
the DttSP Software Defined Radio package (the SDR core for the Flex
Radio SDR-1000), and recently retired from IDA's Center for
Communications Research in Princeton, NJ. He did not stop working on
technical problems to return exclusively to music as he is a regular
consultant to Isigtech, Inc., has recently consulted for CNS Systems,
Inc., and has consulted for many large firms including Agilent. The
work he did for IDA CCR earned him a very prestigious award from the
U.S. government (the Anne Z. Caracristi award) in 2000. He has
consulted with many other firms in matters related to signal processing
problems which need statistical detection or classification algorithms.
Frank has demonstrated a flair and genius for this type of signal
processing problem.Frank is the author of an interesting article in
QEX Nov/Dec. 2003, "Automatic Signal Classification for Software Defined
Radios". This was the first article published in the growing area of
cognitively defined radio with a view to amateur radio applications but
not limited to amateur radio. A Princeton University alumnus, he
studied under one of the most influential American composer's: Milton
Babbitt. Under Babbitt's tutelage, he earned his Ph. D in musical
composition.Frank was recently an organizer of a festival of music
celebrating the life and work of the composer George Antheil:

http://www.paristransatlantic.com/festival/index.html

As an interesting aside, Antheil and actress Hedy Lamarr are credited
with creating frequency hopping spread spectrum for use in torpedo
guidance systems during world war II and were granted a patent. One
could easily understand why Frank would find a kindred spirit in Antheil.

To listen to some of Frank's compositions, one need only use Google. I
suggest you search for "Brickle Merlin". You will find an mp3 of one of
his compositions that will stream.

The best word I can think of to describe Frank without listing more
achievements or writing an unauthorized biography is polymath.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymath

It seems appropriate as you can see from this list of recent
achievements, interests, and his educational achievements. The word is
inadequate, but is a useful beginning place to explore this talented and
complex man. It is the best my limited command of language will allow me
here.

Please join me in celebrating my best friend's achievement and I hope
you will enjoy the NJ Composer's Guild offering in Carnegie Hall in
December. Bravo Frank!

Cheers!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 has ONLY 80dB of third order dynamic range vs SDR-1000 98dB

2005-09-10 Thread Robert McGwier

Mark:

As you know I am a big supporter of the SDR-1000, having written much of
the code that makes it run. I also own K2 serial number 4201 which I
built and proudly operate all the time. For years, there was not a
receiver that could compare to the Elecraft K2. It was and in many ways
still is the "standard to beat". The debt of gratitude we owe Wayne and
Eric for doing this project and the many others they have done and are
doing, is beyond compare. Elecraft is DIRECTLY responsible in my
opinion for the levels to which receivers have risen. Until the
SDR-1000 with its new front end, you had to pay thousands to get a
comparable receiver. Every single day that I worked on the SDR-1000
front end refinements, cajoling, begging, and FINALLY doing it
myself, was directly attributable to the fact that I could not stand
the front end overload on the SDR-1000 and saw what Elecraft had achieved.

Time and technology marches on. The Sirenza parts we now use in the
SDR-1000 did not exist when Eric and Wayne did the engineering. That
said, the Elecraft K2 still kicks EVERYONE's behind in the total
composite noise department because of their foresight in making this
both a DDS based VFO AND following that DDS based VFO with a PLL to
clean up the spurs. In the article you point to, which will be in the
upcoming QST,
http://www.flex-radio.com/articles_files/2005-10_QST_Review.pdf, you
can the DDS spurs in the "worst case" composite noise picture. You can
see that at 60 wpm, the dits are two entire elements behind the key
closure. I could go on, but the facts are, there is much more to
comparing transceivers and receivers, than just the receiver dynamics
numbers. Yes the SDR-1000 has the best close in dynamic range right
now. That will fall soon. The need to pack more transmitters into more
and more crowded spectrum is driving the manufacturer of higher dynamic
range and higher "IP2,IP3" and BDR receivers.

I am EXTREMELY proud of the work I have done on the SDR-1000 with AB2KT
and the folks at Flex. Frank and I are proud owners and regular users
of our Elecraft equipment, and we will continue to be.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Internal Speaker Now Alive and Well

2005-04-17 Thread Robert McGwier
I looked for a while for a wiring error in 4201 before I found I did
exactly the same thing. I
also looked for low power for days and then Gary pointed out that the
bias resistor on the
bottom of the board (the one I marked as having been installed) was not
installed. This is a
complex kit with many parts and "stuff happens". Elecraft's secret
weapons are their novel
use of this exploder, having Scott and Gary fix us up with lost parts
or building difficulties,
and the fantastic repeatability of the design.

I agree with the tunnel vision part. I definitely developed it on the
bias resistor probably
because it is somewhat painful to remove the bottom and look, (hindsight
being 20-20 and
all). I did this several times during the course of events. I found
building this to be a
good learning experience and while more difficult than my SB-110, DX40,
and DX60,

it was also more rewarding.

RE: [Elecraft] RF Noise canceller ?

2005-04-03 Thread Robert McGwier

-Original Message-

Would this type of noise canceler not work on "white" noise also ?
___

The simplest answer is no. White noise typically arrives from random
directions, with random phases, random polarizations, etc. etc. etc. and
are usually from thermal and uncorrelated sources. The principle
of operation of these phasing units IS THAT THEY CAN BE PHASED to
eliminate unwanted signals since they are from a sufficiently point like
source that a null can be tuned on top of them. How is this done?

You can arrange to add an interfering signal 180 degrees out of phase
with one from the intended antenna while not killing the signal of
interest to the point it is not heard. In other words, you increase
the signal to (signal+interference) ratio. To the extent that this
is automated, it is a "smart antenna". The importance of them having
equal responses to the interferer so that simple phasing works is
a tricky business. If amplification is required to do this, then
you have the myriad problems (IP3, IMD, DR, MDS, etc) to deal with
in this new system. Since we are not asking for a perfect null,
but some serious suppression, these conditions can be relaxed.

If the noise source is localized or coming from a direction that is
not nearly collinear (within the 3dB beamwidth of say a directive
antenna) with the signal of interest, it can be nulled with these
phasing methods irrespective of its power spectral distribution,
white, poisson, tone, etc.

This is all reasonably complicated as you can see.

I just sent the following to Jim. For what it might be worth to anyone
else.

73,

Tom N0SS

For the Hakko 808 Desoldering gun, consider also ordering a couple
additional nozzles:

A1394 This is a long (0.434"), slender (0.090") nozzle which will
allow you to get into places the fatter tips won't. It is
particularly handy when you are working on PC boards which
are pretty tightly packed AND which have some of their
components mounted on the bottom of the PC board with the
soldered pads in and among the tightly packed components on
the top side. Because it is long and slender, this is a
'delicate' nozzle, and probably NOT one you would want to
leave on the desoldering tool when you do not need to use
   it.

A1396 This is a short/fat nozzle, similar to the nozzle provided
with the Hakko 808 when it is originally purchased.
However, this nozzle has a 0.091" inside diameter, so it
will suffice for removing most, if not all, of the
connectors used on most PC boards. Some of these connectors
use flat lug-type leads, instead of wire leads, which can
be particularly difficult to remove if you find you must
remove the connector itself. Of course, it also works well
on the larger diameter leads of big diodes, etc.

I use 0.015 and 0.020 for kit building. With 0.015 it is pretty hard

RE: [Elecraft] K-2 vs SDR-1000

2005-02-16 Thread Robert McGwier
In results obtained by me with Leif Asbrink on 14 Mhz,
the IP3 is over 10dBm you set the thing as it should be.
The Elecraft K2 is 20+ dBm with preamp off at 5 Khz.

SDR-1000 BDR is 105 dB, the Elecraft K2 is 135 dB
It IMDDR3 is 99 dB, the Elecraft K2 is better.

The DDS does produce spurs BUT the DDS is not directly driving
the mixer. This is often misunderstood. The DDS output
does not even touch the mixer. The DDS output is hard limited
and that hard limited signal is using to drive a switched
capacitor network. What spurs there are, are CONSIDERABLY
better than driving it directly. In this regard Eric is slightly off in
his implications in that if driven directly by the DDS, the
mixer would be a mess. The worst spurs are "buffered" away
from us.

On the other hand, some spurs get through as phase modulation
on the bus switches driving the switched capacitor front end.
I know this well. I spent months perfecting this ingenious
method for escaping the AM spurs and the PM SPURS are what is
getting through!!

These spurs are annoying and I hope that Gerald in his "next radio"
or next generation boards (whatever) finds a way to clean this
up. That said, what spurs there are, are way down and on
transmit, even with the 100w amplifier these transmit spurs
are so far below legal limit as to be not a thing to worry
about. On receive, they are annoying because Gerald has
built too much sensitivity into the receiver. With everything
flaming, he has < -140 dBm as the MDS. This is about 15 dB too
sensitive for HF work and of course you can raise the IP3 and BDR
WITH A GREAT SOUND CARD by attenuating the front end. With a
great sound card, I raised the BDR by 15 dB while keeping the
MDS the same even though I put another 6 dB of attenuation
inline! I was able to increase the IMDDR by changing the roofing
filter (switched capacitor filter values) and increased the
IP3 to TOP OF CLASS, BETTER THAN EVERYONE EXCEPT THE IC7800 with
a change of front end device! By the way, my sound card
cost $1000. SO, you can take your knife and soldering iron
and make it a great receiver. NOT FOR EVERYONE!

The League recently purchased one for review. Their results
will be interesting to see but the K2 will remain the king.

I would take away from this discussion that the Elecraft K2 is
and will be at the top of the heap in these raw numbers. The
SDR-1000 in my view is about 4-th or 5-th on the "Elecraft
receiver comparision chart" as it comes from the shop. I can
make it almost best on the chart with surgery. So the SDR-1000
is for those who do not mind a never ending beta project. It
really is interesting and I have spent hundreds of hours
programming the DSP for it along with AB2KT. It is in the spirit
of the tinkering amateur radio operator who doesn't mind
modifying their existing radio to make it better. SOUND FAMILIAR?

On Field Day, I supplied to W2GD, Elecraft K2's for our QRP
FD (2A Battery) and we came in sixth overall. I own three
transceivers. Elecraft K2, SDR-1000, and FT1000MP. The FT1000MP
has not been here for months because it is at my contest
multi-multi site (N3NGE's house) as the two meter radio (with
transverter). The K2 and the SDR-1000 are fantastic radios
but it pays to investigate what is right for you. If you are
interested in an open source project that is really interesting
and will continue to be interesting for a while, SDR-1000 is a
really good radio. It is NOT the "best radio" in what would
be most people's estimation. Gerald has been in business for
two years and has probably learned a lot from this experience.
He has sold over 500 of the radios and has had 5 returned.
Three of those folks didn't know they needed a computer! Two
of them could not download new software. I don't think he
has had a truly disatisfied customer. The SDR-1000 is a real
darling of many bleeding edge types in the EME community. It
does things others cannot do (some of these ideas stolen from
Linrad, etc.) That said, it is a radio in training and
Gerald's next offering whatever that is and whenever it will
be is likely to be a really nice one. In my mind, the Elecraft
K2 is at the top of the heap for best receiver. It never ceases
to amaze me that Wayne and Eric put together a kit that
continues to put the big boy's to shame.

My Elecraft K2 and SDR-1000 sit side by side and they fight daily
for my attention!

RE: [Elecraft] Automated BPL Interference Data Collection.

2005-02-13 Thread Robert McGwier

Rich:

Please read my earlier submission. You can indeed, with existing tools,
digitize the entire spectrum. You do not need to do this on a continuous
basis but on a sampling basis. You probably meant that you cannot
digitize, record, process, the entire spectrum on a continuous basis and
that I would not argue with, FOR NOW. However, I agree with you that we need
to concentrate on the ham bands. We can digitize and entire ham band
AND consume it and process it with an eye towards doing some fancy footwork
with the information.

I suggest you read the November/December 2003 QEX article by my best friend,
AB2KT on Automated Signal Classification for Software Defined Radio. Now
that we have these USRP and DCP-1 at our disposal, these kinds of fancy
processes should be coming into vogue. With these tools we can collect
really high quality data for your spread sheets, graphs, etc.

RE: [Elecraft] Automated BPL Interference Data Collection.

2005-02-12 Thread Robert McGwier
I have strong opinions about doing the job with the right tool.

A better approach is to do wideband surveillance using more appropriate
tools. One could use the GnuRadio/USRP widget or the DCP-1/KD6OZH widget
to begin this job quite nicely. Since you really want to demonstrate the
impact of the interference on regular operations, the goal would be to
have the wideband instruments quickly find likely candidate frequencies
for interference content and then, through computer control, tune the
narrow band resource do the actual evidence (sound file) capture.
Since you are not likely to get really accurate frequencies with the
wideband equipment, without needing a huge number of samples and very
large FFT's on what will probably not be that coherent anyway, I would
think a receiver capable of 40Khz to 80Khz bandwidth would be better.
While not inexpensive, the SDR-1000 can be used at that bandwidth. Since
we are not really after super performance here, I would think we could get
away with cheaper receivers but this would have to be thought out carefully
since this is the "evidence" gathering instrument.

I would suggest a search strategy doing ham band wide chunks (so you could
put some filtering in front of the FPGA based widgets) and have them
direct the narrow band resource when and where to record.

If we separated antennas sufficiently, and used (say) GPS tamed clocks
for the oscillators for the sampling, you could do time difference of
arrival geolocation of the emitter.

I need ten day weeks and 140 hour days and two more bodies. ;-)

I read recently that a BPL trial is starting in my state. The trial is not

get the documentation? I have a few ideas that require programming a
computer. I will present them hear in the hope that someone will develop the
software.

My first thought was to scan through all the HF bands with a camcorder set
to look at my transceiver. This way the audio and frequency would be
documented. By periodically tuning to WWV, the exact time and date would
also be documented. The biggest problem with this is the time required to
manually scan the radio. If the process could be automated, data could be
collected during all hours of the day, and my time at the radio can be spent
making QSO's.

I took the IC-703 back the day after FD. (Gag me with a spoon). It started
dropping power to zero after an hour of operation. Horrible image
rejection,
just a terrible receiver and very poor quality control.

Those 16000+ points prove that QRP is no serious impediment to a serious
score at FD. I can't even begin to tell you how many points we left on
the table from various screw ups.

The K2 is an awesome QRP FD radio.

BencherHexkey paddle

For some time we have been looking for a quality desktop CW paddle to
complement the K1, K2 and KX1. Bob Locher at Bencher has worked with us
to create a special edition of his new HexKey paddle for us with a
unique Elecraft serial sequence stamped into its base, starting with s/n
001. This paddle derives its mechanism from the famous mercury paddle
that Bencher also manufactures. It has a heavy hexagonal black base with
a chrome magnetically tensioned mechanism with gold contacts. From the
first time I tried it I was hooked :-)

See: http://www.elecraft.com/hexkey/Elecraft_hexkey1_sm.JPG

I've added it to our order form and we have them in stock. Bencher lists
the regular HexKey for $195. We are offering the Elecraft special
edition for $179.95.

We will also have them with us at Pacificon this weekend.

I'll upload a full web page describing it in more detail next week after
we return from Pacificon.

[Elecraft] VA3LK SK

2004-10-07 Thread Robert McGwier
My great friend Larry Kayser, VA3LK, of many years in AMSAT,
QRP, and a great lover of using low to the ground yagi's for
ground enhancement on EME has passed away suddenly with a
heart attack.

Larry loved his Elecraft K1, his Elecraft KX-1. He was the
first person to complete a two way transatlantic (full QSO)
on 137 Khz. He was a big time contributor technically to
AMSAT. He loved showing me his single M^2 yagi and his 200w
producing echo's that I thought were not possible on 2 meters
off the moon using "ground" enhancement on the lake where he lived.

Larry was an indomitable spirit and it can easily be said that
Larry never did anything half way. I am sure since he spent
almost all of his efforts on Christian broadcast networks
on satellite and Shortwave in the last few years that he
hit St. Peter pretty hard as he burst through the Pearly
gates on the way to his just reward.

He will be missed.

Never! Once you've used one, you'd never sell unless slipping into the
inability to use anymore. I now have both the desoldering gun and the

45 years of soldering, etc., and a lot of building, these are more important

I am building my second K2. I bought an XG1 after the first one was complete
so did not use it on the other build until after it was running.

I am to the point in the process where I just did my first alignment step.
Everything was perfect and S meter calibrated fine. There is a note that
says if you have the XG1, you can use it to get your 50mv S9 signal at this
point.

They do not give you much more detail than that. So I attached it to the BNC
at the back and nothing. Looking over the schematic It looke like W1 might
have to be installed. I did not spend much time looking but that seemed to
be the case.

So, should you be able to use the BNC and XG1 and get a signal? Seems like
the RF board is not far enough along to do that yet.

Consistent, yes. It is also ambiguous. It does not uniquely identify a
message as coming from the list. If someone does a private (off-list) reply
to one of your messages, a filter built on such a criteria will end up
sorting it in with list traffic. I've seen a few embarrassing messages
appear on lists as a result of this (responses to private messages ending up
on a list).

There is a unique header which is present on all messages coming from the
list server used by Elecraft, which has been available since at least 2001:

 "List-Id: Elecraft Discussion List "

Depending upon your MUA, "Elecraft" in header "List-Id: or "List-Id:
Elecraft" in headers should be sufficient to unambiguously identify a
message as coming from this discussion list. I don't know if Elecraft has
other lists (a beta tester one, perhaps), but if so, a longer string may be
needed to uniquely identify each for anyone on multiple lists.

For MS Lookout, a rule such as "Apply this rule after the message arrives
with List-ID: Elecraft in the message header" should work.

I'm afraid qsl.net has become a dead loss. I shall probably close my own
qsl.net site, as it's a waste of time at the moment. It's entirely the
fault of hams themselves, who will spend thousands of bucks on equipment
but expect everything on the internet to be free. I coughed up a donation
when asked to a couple of months back, but according to an email Al (the
owner of qsl.net) sent out, the vast majority didn't, despite the fact that
they could even win a transceiver. Decent servers and connectivity don't
grow on trees, they cost money. But nobody wants to pay for them, it seems.

Rant over.

[Elecraft] Hard Drive Failure, THANKS

2004-07-08 Thread Robert McGwier
I received many many replies from my off topic posting.
I love ham radio and the generosity of people to others
in need. THANK YOU. My investigations reveal that this would
be the single largest expenditure on equipment I have made in
two years. Many of you know me, and so you understand
what that means: this is extremely expensive. It is that
way because companies, having as poor a back up situation
as I did, have lost vital data and will pay whatever it takes
to get the problem fixed. The market will bear the price,
and it is high.

My failure is in the spindle and POSSIBLY a disk head.
The disk had droppings put on it for ten minutes before I
figured out what was happening. I had important family
financial, tax, etc. backed up as well as most important
code work I am doing now. But I lost a book I was working
on, a large article and all research that went into it
for QST, a large article and all research that went into
it for an article for QEX, a large article and all research
that went into it for an article for CQ VHF, and all design
work on several antennas including a small vertical array
for 160 meters for N2NT and W2GD. It has mostly stopped
my work on the SDR-1000 for a month while I attempt to
recover.

Life is too short and I can afford a full raid disk, and excellent
back up, and a high quality UPS much more readily than I can afford
to lose exactly 1/10 of my life's work.

Thanks again to all who wrote.

Hi

It really does not matter with one exception The KPA100 and 60M option
require removal of the heat sink on the K2. This is not something you want
to do many times because of the possibility of damage to the thermal pads or
loss of the hardware stack on the output transistors. I would suggest
removing the bottom cover and heat sink once and installing all of the
connectors for the KPA100, SSB and the 60M at the same time then you can
install the modules when ever you want without requiring the removal of the
heat sink. I always install all of the connectors for the KPA100 60M SSB and
noise blanker when building a K2 so it is ready for any option with a
minimum of disassembly. The connectors come in the option kits so you can
fish them out of the packages and install them at the same time you are
building the RF board if you already have the options. If you do not have
the options yet you can order the connector kit from Elecraft for a few
dollars and install them so you are ready for any of the options. If you are
going to order the connectors separately then don't forget to order the
standoffs and hardware also or you may need to disassemble the heat sink to
install the hardware.

reversed supply polarity, reversed internal battery, and shorts from
the 12 V line to ground. The K2 is really hard to damage. Only a truly
motivated and innovative tinkerer could find a way to fry the finals
;)

RE: [Elecraft] Re: FD W4ZV 1B QRP Single Op

2004-06-29 Thread Robert McGwier

I completely agree with Wayne. Having listened to our mostly CW
bands at our QRP FD and looking at the early scores on 3830, comparing them
to previous years, I notice almost no decline.

Last year, in one of the worst single propagation years I can remember
in 30 years of FD (43 for W2GD who agrees), we came within a few hundred
points of setting the 3A record. We were behind only the PVRC (23A) and
Rochester (17A) in total score. This year we were within 500 or so
points of setting the 2A battery QRP record. You cannot do this with
a seriously falling density of CW ops because they count 2 points per
Q (10 if you are QRP). Anecdotally and mathematically, I believe we
can argue that Bill's analysis of what he has heard is incorrect. I love
a good argument though, and will listen to any counter remarks with
interest.

Hi Bill,

Congratulations on your excellent showing on Field Day. With that many
QSOs, I'm sure you'll do very well in your division. Yes, FD is a bit
of work, but it's also a great chance to get outdoors and try your hand
at emergency communication setup. I think you'll be back next year ;)

> ...seemed to me that the CW bands were surprisingly empty. ...

Wow -- that wasn't my impression at all. I heard wall-to-wall CW
signals on 20 and 40 meters most of the time, and a good number on 15
and 80 meters. Having done FD for some 10 years in a row now, I'd say
that CW activity is about the same as ever.

When using QRP on Field Day, you need a lot of patience and the best
possible antenna. What I usually do is put up at least two antennas
(typically, orthogonal long wires that favor N-S and E-W). You can
connect both to the KAT2 or KAT100 at the same time, since both ATUs
have dual antenna jacks. You can then quickly test both antennas, even
on a per-signal basis, using the front panel ANT1/2 switch.

> QSK...

Where did you have T-R set in the menu? At T-R = 0.00, the receiver is
unmuted very fast, which can cause a small receive artifact with
certain narrow crystal filter and DSP settings. But we recommend using
T-R = 0.01 or higher anyway. For casual operation, use T-R = 0.02 to
0.05.

The time required to cleanly switch the VCO between RX and TX is around
10-15 ms. We put a high value on completely clickless and chirpless CW
keying, and adjusted firmware delays accordingly. Still, wiith TR =
0.01, you should be able to hear between characters (not words) even at
50 WPM. If not, you may have an assembly or component problem
somewhere.

It's likely that we could improve VCO lock time and obtain between-dits
receive at such speeds. This is one item on my list of possible future
mods for the K2.

> Power meter...

It's a good idea to adjust POWER when not keying. During transmit, a
small additional amount of hysteresis is added to the POWER control to
improve noise margin, and this can increase the power-control step
size.

You can also usually adjust one resistor value in the BFO attenuator to
improve power-setting accuracy. Some JFETs (Q24) have much higher
transconductance than average, leading to coarser steps from the 8-bit
DAC. To compensate, try increasing the value of R98 from 270 to as high
as 470-820 ohms. (This experiment is best done with a small trim pot
installed; replace the pot with a fixed resistor close to the final pot
value.) If you adjust R98's value, make sure that the rig can still
reach at least 10 watts on all bands with POWER set to 10.0.

> CW messages...

In order to store the maximum possible characters in the K2's CW
message memories, the firmware "quantizes" your sending into
standard-length dots, dashes, and spaces. This is not as forgiving as
using a "times-8 clock" for recording, which is characteristic of some
keyers. But such keyers have a much larger EEPROM than the K2 does, or
they don't provide as many characters of storage. It's conceivable that
we could go to a larger part in the future and use a times-8 or even
times-16 sample clock. (Another item on my future mods list)

RE: [Elecraft] Field Day report

2004-06-28 Thread Robert McGwier
Naaa, the thanks all go to you guys at Elecraft. This is one
great kit and radio. I love the size and plan on using two
of them at the 160 meter contest season during Winter at W2GD
(we won Multi-Multi CQ WW this past year). The way we use them,
the simplicity and lack of "extras" is a plus. I don't intend
to give away secrets here but these radios will be of great
benefit to the way we use them. The strong signal handling
along with the squeal proofing from being on the same frequency
(diodes off the toroidal transformer) as well as the high IP3,
etc. will make this radio one superior performer on 160.

I am also building the W0UN/W8JI small vertical array at that
site and we should be able to hear with the best of them
at the end of it. The site is on the Jersey coast in Tuckerton
and we are so close to the water that during a Nor'easter
last year the bottom of the tower used for the wire BEAMS
on 160 was under two feet of water!

Thanks for allowing us to have real pride on this side of the
Pacific again. The really truly great thing you have done is
to raise the bar and FORCED the other manufacturers to pay
attention to these "minor" details!! Your customer service and
the adminstration of this exploder are just tops. It is a pleasure doing
business with you, Eric, and the rest of the Elecraft company.

I hope many of you who did Field Day worked us at W2GD.
We had Elecraft K2's on the 2A and a IC-703 on the
GOTA station (N4HY). We had a Steppir Beam on 10-20
(15 meters surprised us with a nice opening and accounted
for 1/7 of our QSO's). We had a Steppir Vertical on
the GOTA station to aid in the isolation (vertical vs
horizontal) and it did help. Along with wire beams
on 80/75 and 40 meters, we did very well with
just under 15 QSO's and several hundred in bonus points. The
K2 was excellent. SSB stinks as a QRP mode on FD and we
had only 141 QSO's inclusive of the 100 we did on GOTA
(N4HY).

Wonder when the in-depth ARRL report on the 7800 will be available? Would
like to see what the 2KHZ spacing Dynamic Range numbers look like.

RE: [Elecraft] IC-7800 vs K2

2004-06-28 Thread Robert McGwier
Hear Hear. I just cannot understand what is going on in the ICOM
engineering labs. If you are an ARRL member, go the product review
pages. Look at the dynamics numbers for:

IC746
IC756
IC756Pro
IC746Pro
IC756ProII

The packaging and the features became richer but the receivers get
WORSE as you go down in that list. It is just inexcuseable engineering.
These tests should be the standard part of every engineering design
for an amateur transceiver at the factory and if you cannot improve
the numbers, the LEAST you should do is get them to equal the last
model.

ICOM has not improved AT ALL on the IC-781.

Looking at what I consider the three most important measurements of a

in ALL THREE areas.

Lastly, Gary at Elecraft is second as a major resource of
help behind the existence of the internet and this
exploder. I had a weak receiver problem (finishing the
radio at the last minute). It was working but deaf.
Gary said it is one of 3 things and the problem was 1st
in his list. I would hope that in the future, Elecraft
could STANDARDIZE on the transformers, Red wire was ALWAYS
holes 1 and 2, and green wire is ALWAYS 3 and 4. After
having several that way, the T7 comes along and is the
opposite. I was not careful and put it in backwards!

The other gotcha for me is reading what to do with the
4.7 pf on the back edge stuck in as a hole filler where
a three pin jumper goes. I would change the instruction
manual to read: If looking from at the RF board from
the front panel side, then left pin is 1 and right pin 3,
solder the capacitor into holes 1 and 3. I put it in the
pins near the OUTER EDGE, misinterpreting the instructions.

The story of discovering this is pretty funny. After Gary
helped me fix the T7 problem, it was clear that signal coming
through the mixer were much louder. The "birdie" at 7000 Hz
used in the initial alignment was much louder and easier
to do the alignment of the can. However, the radio was
still deaf at the antenna (signals heard but REALLY weak).
8640B set to -40 dBm to produce an S9 signal. I decided to
inspect the bottom side of the board again, grabbed the
radio on its back edge, and almost blasted my ears off as
the receiver came to life. I actually dropped it. I then
ran my finger along the back edge until the receiver came
to life and then discovered the 4.7 pf in the wrong pins!

Great transceiver and a fun kit. I look forward to putting
the 160, 60 meter, and DSP in to finish.

Hi Larry & group,

Don't waste your money. I bought the MFJ 461its very tricky to adjust it
to display anything but gibberish. It only works for strong signals of
nearly perfectly sent code on an otherwise quiet band. If you can hear
other signals near your listening frequency, so can the 461 and it will be
"confused", it can't discriminate different tones and lock onto one signal
so it won't work on crowded bands.

Having said all the above, if you are not put off from buying one.I
intend to sell mine on ebay soon.it will have a "buy it now" price of
$50.00. You can have it for that price. Its in good shape, little used and I
have the instructions that came with it.

Thanks Ron for your clear answer. I understand, I think this is will be fine
for me for now. You know higher they can take, higher will be the price
also. This scope is actually around 500$ CDN That the maximum I can
affort for a scope for now... But maybe in the futur, I could get a hand on
a better scope (maybe a used one) for a good price.

Anyway, for now, I think it will be very handy, at least for my
understanding of a scope and for basic readings I need.

Another good message I will keep in my files !!!
