[Elecraft] D13 voltage test high?

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 CAL acting up?
I see that the small aux board must be removed as there is a "null" pin in the plug and cable, so went ahead and did that and hooked up the KPA100 with its RF out to the meter to the dummy load. When I hold TUNE/DISPLAY, I get a display that looks like with values when power is turned all the way down: 0.1 1.2-1 and all the way up 4 2.1-1 Is that pwr and swr? If I key down the display reverts to frequency immediately, so seems I can't use TUNE/DISPLAY to monitor the power setting or key down output. As I turn the power up or down I get HiCur almost constantly until I let go of the power button. The behavior of the knob is not smooth, jumps a few to several watts sometimes. Not sure if that's a dirty pot or a control board problem. - Cloud Warmer Ham Radio Blog -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K2/100 CAL acting up?
My KAT2/100 seems to be acting up. Started noticing high SWR problems with a tuned antenna, so ran further tests with a dummy load. First thing is when I set Menu->AtU-CAL, I get high SWR readings. I thought this was supposed to zero out/bypass the tuner. Clicking of relays is heard but with a dummy load the SWR reading is 4:1 on the LED scale. It's also pulling down the voltage as I clearly hear my outboard fan reduce RPM. If I set it back to Auto, the high SWR remains until I hit TUNE, which quickly takes it down to 1:1 (or something reasonable when using an antenna) Sometimes, if the rig is in high power range I see a momentary HiCur flash at first key down. My current level is set to 3.5A. I have ample output power according to my wattmeter and have been making QSOs, as I can tune out the phantom SWR, but probably I am making the situation worse. Sometimes when I switch bands, the high SWR returns even though the ATU memory should remember the band. Can someone outline a diagnostic path to figure out where the problem may lie? Fortunately, the KAT2/100 is outboard, which makes it easier to access (K-Twins configuration). [Elecraft] Replacement of the K2 encoder with Honeywell part
Not too long ago I got a lot of help here diagnosing a stuck frequency display on one of my K2s. It was determined that both the encoder and U3 needed replacing. Being a thrifty ham and with some good advice from KA7OEI about using alternate encoder parts, I decided to try a different part that is about 1/3rd the cost of the original Elecraft part. Happily, it worked, though the mounting of the new encoder was a bit challenging. Re: [Elecraft] K2 VFO Freq Display Stuck (again)
Don, I wasn't able to reproduce the intermittent small voltage drop in encoder pins 3 and 4 today, when they are disconnected from the board. Not sure why. I reconnected them and they both show nearly identical resting voltages (4.4-4.6V) and both vary in unison by a very small voltage (~0.05V) as I turn the encoder. So, I guess the encoder is toast along with U3. Unfortunately, the encoder is about 92 bux! BTW, I'm in Costa Rica, not VK-Land, but the shipping is lengthy in either case. I have to have parts shipped via a 3rd party because Elecraft's label on the outside will get them caught in Customs, which for me is a 6 hour RT drive and 2 hours standing in line! I'd rather wait the extra month it takes to get them here to avoid that (I don't mind paying duty, but that trip is really beyond the pale). 73, Casey - Cloud Warmer Ham Radio Blog -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-VFO-Freq-Display-Stuck-again-tp7136782p7557794.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K2 VFO Freq Display Stuck (again)
Yes, I remember that Enc B was fine last time, also, but it's definitely not now. One correction to my previous post, when the encoder is connected the voltage on Enc B and Enc RD vary between .4-.46V, not from zero. With the encoder pins 3 and 4 disconnected and measuring directly at the encoder pins I see the voltage hold about 4.4V on both 3 and 4. As I turn the encoder the voltages on either pin drop to zero, but only intermittently. The voltage at U3 pin 14 is about .3V (even when the encoder pins are connected it measures about .1V, whereas the voltage chart says it should be 3.1V and varying). Hope I did the measurements correctly. 73, Casey - Cloud Warmer Ham Radio Blog -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-VFO-Freq-Display-Stuck-again-tp7136782p7557747.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

If anyone has used an ALS-600 with their K2 I'd like to hear any tips you may have. I have a K2 with the PA/ATU outboard in separate enclosure that I want to use to drive the amp. Is there nothing more to do than to install a cable from the K2/100 PA KEY OUT to the ALS-600's RELAY jack (and RF OUT to RF IN, of course)? I've read that at least with the K3 hooking up ALC is not needed (of course, I have to take care not to use too much drive from the K2). I have parts on order for the AD5X QSK mod, but they probably won't be here for quite a while. What would you recommend that I set the QSK delay to in the K2 to avoid switching while hot? [Elecraft] K2 VFO Freq Display Stuck (again)
Back in April I had a problem with the frequency not moving (just final digit flickering) and that turned out to be a broken wire to the encoder. Again the problem has cropped up with identical outward symptoms. I checked the encoder wires again, all are fine. Here are some measurements that were asked for last time. The voltage measurements shown are only ones that differ significantly from those listed on pg. 16 of the K2 manual, Appendix E. The manual reference voltage is in parentheses. U3: pin3 4.8 (0.8), pin 7 3.5 (2.0), pin 13 4.7 (0.2), pin 14 .1 (3.1), pin 15 4.1 (0.8), pin 18 .08 (3.6). The manual notes that all the voltages on these pins may vary. Resistance measured at each encoder pin with the FP board removed: Pin 1 24K, Pin 2 106K, Pin3 106K, Pin 4 29K Can someone help me troubleshoot this? Absolutely! I think Heathkit could find a nice niche above MFJ and beneath Elecraft, quality-wise. I never really thought of Heathkit, in their previous ham era, as a top-notch contestor-grade manufacturer, but rather a company that supplied decent quality but affordable equipment, and a wide variety of it, too! Hell, they could probably make a good business just recreating (with modern components) look-alikes of their most popular kits. Re: [Elecraft] Lightning Strike - Metal Roof attracts?
Alan, Listen to Don Wilhem, he knows of what he speaks. Even if you can't get all that done, get a start on it. I live in Costa Rica and in the winter months (June-Nov) it would be /unusual/ if we didn't have a lightning storm nearly every day. If I were you I would at a minimum get that roof grounded at the corners with as big a gauge of bare copper wire that you can. If you get a hit on the roof it will want to travel to ground and you want to guide it there, not let it find its own path, which will likely leave a trail of destruction. Unplugging stuff is really not the answer. Should lightning travel down that unconnected cable you might get a nice plasma ball out the free end. Keep a fire extinguisher handy. The Sycom whole house surge suppressor is what we use here and it works great, especially for strikes on the power lines that may be miles away. It takes a surge to ground in 5 ns and connects directly and easily to the main panel. Cost, ... about 50 bux. Little surges like that can damage any equipment in your house right away or gradually over time. You won't even know they are happening until you put one of these suppressors in when you will sometimes notice the lights dim for a fraction of a second as it takes another one to ground. Good luck! [Elecraft] K2 serial interface debug
I have two K2s (one for casual, one for dress . Both have the serial I/O unit. One works fine the other not so much. The one with the problem is not working with Fldigi (using any of the CAT interfaces). No commands appear to be flowing in either direction. I actually don't know if the serial I/O ever worked on that K2 as this is the first time I've tried it. Can someone just give me a debug strategy and some tips to help diagnose it? Re: [Elecraft] VFO Encoder doesn't change frequency
Good suggestions John. I don't know how the board connections work in the K3, not having one. In the K2 there is only one board connection involved, the FP board to the CB and it uses long pin plug/jack to accomplish this. It would be very difficult to jostle it loose. Anyway, my take on it was that the MCU was the part not making a good connection as the VFO started working when I took it out and put it back in during the course of taking measurements. Up to the point where I had everything back together except the faceplate it was still working. As soon as I put the faceplate in place and only tightened the screw holding the encoder in place, back to square one. Extracting, cleaning the pins, replacing the MCU now has no effect. Could be some other component(s) has failed. 73, Casey, TI2/NA7U - Costa Rica Blog -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/VFO-Encoder-doesn-t-change-frequency-tp6237008p6238342.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] VFO Encoder doesn't change frequency
Bingo Don! Check the simplest explanation first. It actually wasn't a soldering problem, though solder was the solution. One of the encoder wires has a micro-crack in it that I'd overlooked before, or maybe it widened when I was moving things around, but it jumped right out at me when I took off the FP last time. All fixed!! [Elecraft] VFO Encoder doesn't change frequency
I have a very similar problem to what G0NIG posted about a year ago. Last digit of the frequency flickers but nothing else changes when spinning the dial. This applies also to the menu. I followed along with what Nidge had done with Don's help and found some similar measurements, others not quite. The final measurements were resistance measurement with and without the CB MCU installed. After re-installing the MCU the encoder again worked, perfectly! At each step of re-assembly I test the VFO again and it still worked, ... until I put in place the front panel and had only tightened the screw holding the encoder. Now it is stuck again. I figured that I'd re-seat the MCU again, and clean the contacts, but no joy. My measurements on U3 on the FP board are: Pin 14, .09v, Pin 15, 4.2V, Pin 7 3.4v. Note: when the encoder was again briefly working these voltages were the same! In Nidge's original thread Pin 14 was highly suspect because of the low voltage, but when the encoder was working in my K2 the voltage was still low. I've checked continuity of ENC A and ENC B all the way back to the MCU, it's good. Resistance from each of the 4 encoder pins to Gnd: With the CB not in place - Pin 1 - 24K, pin 2 - 618K, pin 3 - 617K, pin 4 - 538 K With CB in place, and with and without the MCU plugged in the measurements don't vary - Pin 1 - 3K, pin 2 - 581K, pin 3 - 579K, pin 4 - 507K Open to ideas. 73, Casye - Costa Rica Blog -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/VFO-Encoder-doesn-t-change-frequency-tp6237008p6237008.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Cooked K2/PA100 with PSK
D17 is about 1K ohms both directions, D18 about 2K ohms both directions. I can order these 1N5711s on eBay but it will take a couple weeks at least to receive them here in CR. Will have to re-assemble the radio to test CAL TPA settings, forgot to do it first. PAs don't show any physical signs of cooking. I'd set the radio for 40W max on SSB and backed off the audio level so that the wattmeter showed half that. The 100W on the wattmeter was only measured in CW mode. 73, Casey - http://adullroar.blogspot.com Costa Rica Blog -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Cooked-K2-PA100-with-PSK-tp5128043p5131289.html Sent from the [K2] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Cooked K2/PA100 with PSK
I was running my K2/100 at 40W during PSK and the heat sink was too hot to touch (ooops!). Now it has the following symptoms of sickness: - in CW mode key down it generates either 100W or 10W when in high or low power mode respectively. In other words, always outputs maximum power. - in SSB mode it won't put out more than 20W and only if I drive the audio pretty hard. I only do this for a second or two, not trying to make things worse =^) I need advice on how best to organize my triage of the problem, where to look first, second, etc. I'm handy with tools, DMM, and at following instructions. :) TIA, Casey -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Cooked-K2-PA100-with-PSK-tp5128043p5128043.html Sent from the [K2] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
