Re: [Elecraft] K3 is an SDR?
Perhaps a bit more explanatory The K2 is definitely not an SDR. The K2 uses traditional rf amps, mixers, if amplifier, crystal filters in the if and a product detector, followed by an audio amp, none of which are defined in software. Elecraft does offer an add on audio DSP option which works quite well. Re: [Elecraft] K2 For Sale
David, You are so right!! The problem is I have a K3/100 with a P3 and am now pursuing satellite. The K2 is my standby rig and I really love it. It is a great radio, even at 10W I have worked some good DX, and it is a beyond par CW radio, actually I think a bit more sensitive than my K3. I have been working on a project using the Arduino UNO for satellite and for that I need a couple of VHF/UHF radios. So, I decided I would make the sacrifice. 73s Jim On Dec 14, 2012, at 5:07 AM, David G4DMP wrote: > In a recent message, W4ATK writes >> Go to QTH.com listing number 1034106 for photo and details. >> >> Jim, W4ATK > > I wouldn't replace your K2 with an FT-817ND or an FT-897 Jim. [Elecraft] K3: Noise Reduction - FWIW
I have read with interest the e-mails regarding the K3 noise reduction feature. I will post my observations herewith. It took a bit of work to find the "sweet spot" setting for my noise environment. Once found, it has proven to be quite satisfactory. Having worked with a number of SDR type of radios (Flex, Yaesu, and now K3 and for that matter K2) I can say that, in my opinion, the K3 is as good as it gets. I sense a number of users may not be entirely familiar with noise reduction as it pertains to a software defined radio. In some cases, it seems one is trying to use noise reduction where one should be using noise blanking, a common mistake in attempting to reduce impulse noise from power lines. Another common mistake would be to solicit the settings from another user in a different noise environment. One resource I found to be of benefit to me in helping me to understand the "processes" of DSP is "The Engineer's Guide to Digital Signal Processing" by Steven W. Smith. It is a free download from http://www.dspguide.com. 73s, Jim, W4ATK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Utility and Mountain Lion problem
A lot of people will not know how to access the preferences file. Click on the McIntosh HD icon on your desktop In the Finder window command line click on GO, this will bring up a drop down box. Near the bottom of the box you will find "Go To Folder" The folder you want to got to is "/Users//Library Preferences" Use caution at this point as there are a number of Elecraft files out there. Look for "K3UtilPrefs" and P3UtilPrefs" These are the files to delete based on whether you are having trouble with the K3Utility or P3Utility. These files and folders are normally hidden from view. If you wish to just navigate to the files using the finder, you can un-hide the files by doing the following. CAUTION: THESE FILES ARE HIDDEN FOR A PURPOSE. Re: [Elecraft] Mac K3 and P3 Utilities
David, No problem. I was attempting a bit of humor. I kept looking for the preferences after your posts the other day, but just today found your reply on another Q&A forum. Deleted the preferences files and everything came alive. It is strange that it occurs as often as it does. I have had the utility run for days and then unexpectedly up jumps the devil. I remember an app I wrote for a Forestry group a few years ago. Worked great and all of the sudden one day, it just started having trouble. That turned out to be a memory leak, from an object I did not release. The usage had gone up and crossed a threshold. Embarrassing but true. Actually I was discussing the repair permissions with Apple Care today and it is supposedly on effective on the OS and apps from Apple. So now I wonder how it worked for me. Must have done something. Who knows? As far as folder name changes, none here. and as far as I know the "help" is always in its default location. I am running the Beta release but I have a folder where I put that stuff and it is there all the time. I have always said, there comes a time in software development when we programmers can "hear" a click. Everything falls into place. It may take a while sometimes but it will come. Programming is a science , Yes, but it is also an art form. Believe me you have not stepped on any toes where I am concerned. I found your responses to be quite friendly and certainly without any attempt to put one in his place. And if you still want the files, I will send the next one to you, unfortunately I did not keep the ones from today. 73s and I hope to see you on the air sometimes and we can swap war stories. Re: [Elecraft] Mac K3 and P3 Utilities
Found on the internet. it is possible that the preferences file or the directory structure used to store the firmware files may have, somehow, become corrupt. Let's first try deleting the preferences file and see if that solves the problem. Use Finder to navigate to the /User/your_user_name/Library/Preferences folder. A quick way to get there is to click the "Go to folder" menu option under the "Go" menu in Finder. Then type in "/Users/your_user_name/Library/Preferences". Once you get there, locate the file named "KX3UtilPrefs" and rename it to something like "KX3UtilPrefs_BAK". Or you can delete it. Then try running the KX3 Utility again. Renaming the preferences file would be better because I would like for you to email it to me if this fixes the problem. 73s Jim, W4ATK On Aug 27, 2012, at 4:25 PM, W4ATK wrote: > I often get the following error message which is fatal. Re: [Elecraft] Windows vs Mac
I have found the Mac to be an excellent choice. For those programs that I really need from my old PC, I run under CrossOvere ($59.95) where ther run as Mac apps with no switching back and forth. I have found the Navigator to be an excellent interface satisfying every need for serial port, cw keyer etc. Personally, I would not even consider going back to a PC. Re: [Elecraft] FW: TEN-TEC announces new amplifier
Aha! Now we have the motive behind the postings on this subject. So if I understand this, we are to be comfortable when one uses a reflector provided by a manufacturer in an attempt to influence that manufacturer's pricing of their product. Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA data RTTY FSK D
I had the opportunity to spend a couple of hours on the TARA Grid Dip contest Saturday. I choose to work RTTY with the P3SVGA and FSK D. What a hoot! Everything worked as it should. Each new contact went better than the previous one. I had quickly put in a couple of text messages for the contest and they proved to be adequate. I have divided the 50 Text message capability into 4 groups CW (12) PSK31(12) RTTY (12) and an auxillary group of 12. They are accessed as F1 thru F12 (CW), F1 thru F12 (PSK31), F1 thru F12 (RTTY), and the aux group, F1 thru F12. Each function key carries basically the same message, just "personalized" for the particular mode, so other than remembering the correct pre-key, F! is always "CQ". etc. For the contest I used the aux group, Function Keyes personalized for the Grid Dip. To make a long story short, this scheme has worked well for me on CW and RTTY. I must admit tuning PSK31 has been a bit more of a trial but I have made a few contacts. Clicking on the browser is a lot easier. :-)) Jim, W4ATK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA Keyboard
Yep, already done that. All but the full wave 40M loop are fairly isolated, out over the garage area. The 40M loop is about 9' over my head when at the operating position and that was a bit of a concern. Duty cycle of course enters into the equation and that sorta brought things down well into the safe level for even 500w, so I added the safety factor of driving the KPA500 at 10W yielding approximately 300 W at the antenna. That accomplishes a couple of things, one being not have to re-purchase antenna tuners :-)) (I have tuners at the feed points of the various antennas, more efficient that way.) [Elecraft] P3 SVGA Anomalies
An observation while copying W1AW CW broadcast which has an excellent S/N ratio here, I have noticed characters being dropped on the SVGA monitor screen. "NOT" displayed on the K3 appeared as "NT" on the monitor. "REDUCE" on the K3 display is shown as "REDCE" on the SVGA monitor for a couple of examples. This is a frequent occurrence and is not related to a particular character. If the K3 has it, why is it being dropped by the SVGA/FFT board? Also wordspaces are not being handled properly at elevated speeds. I assume the decoded characters are being passed to the P3 via the CAT connection as MacLogger DX's keyer function also displays the decoded CW from the K3 and in past observations does so quite faithfully.. I look forward to the promised upgrades of the decoder software. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV Utility for Mac (Repost)
Bill, Check out CrossOver. It is a $59.95 app from CodeWeavers that sets up a PC based program to run on a Mac. There is no requirement for Windows. I have used it for the following things so far, JT65-HF, EZNEC2 antenna design software, RS91 Icom Programming software, and lastly CWGet Morse decoder. If you are using a com port, as you would be, you will need to create a Unix type link to associate the COMx number to a USB/serial driver, very easy. Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW text decoder
Bad habit??? Actually, I have found it to be a great device for helping me in increasing my code speed. It allows me to enter into QSOs where the speed would be a problem and as a result as I copy along with the decoder and am beginning to copy words not characters in my head. I use a keyboard for sending quite a bit. As one of advanced age with the accompanying joint problems as well as coordination issues, after a short interval on the paddles I am afraid my code becomes erratic. With the keyboard, I am good to go. I had to copy 20WPM to graduate from Radioman School (USN) and go on to CT School for my secondary training. Fortunately the Navy recognized I would never be a great CW operator and I was placed in the non-morse "O Branch". Since O Branch guys had to pass the 20WPM code test to advance in grade, I had to wait quite a while until the forces that be decided that was bit of a stretch for us, and dropped that requirement. So instead of banging on a typewriter, I finished out my tour in a R&D position at Cheltenham, MD. Great fun, new toys, and learned a lot that has stuck with me throughout the years. The desire to be proficient in code has never left me and at 79 (almost) and 58 (almost) years as an amateur operator I am still looking for improvement. :-)) The decoder is helping me achieve those goals. 73s Jim, W4ATK On Jul 23, 2012, at 3:15 PM, dm...@nexicom.net wrote: > Coming from a guy that is trying very hard to learn code, Its hard to > resist the text decoder but have only used it as a crutch in contests. > When I am just having day to day QSOs I plod along without the > decoder helping me. [Elecraft] 4.48 vs 4.51 CW Decode
I am saving a copy of 4.48 so I can go back to it. IMHO 4.51 is: 1) More difficult to use 2) Does not perform as well as 4.48 3) Lacks the weak signal performance of 4.48 4) Requires constant adjustment of the RF Gain control This was the absolute best CW decoder I had ever used. I am still using 4.51 but have not yet hit the sweet spot with it. Perhaps others are having better results and will share AGC settings, threshold setting etc. I am can copy call signs, signal reports at elevated speeds, but alas I am CW challenged and am using CW decode to help me get over the 18 to 20 wpm block. Re: [Elecraft] "random wire" and the KX3 ATU
I would be in real trouble if I could not use wire antennas. All of my antennas are in my attic. They consist of a full wave 40M loop fed thru the little Elecraft balun via a short run of 450 ohm ladder line, a 65' marconi (end fed "random" wire) in an "inverted U" configuration fed thru a Balun Designs UNUN , and a 5 band vertical dipole that is center loaded. The ATU in my K3 does an excellent job of matching this variety of antennas. I get great signal reports, particularly off of the "inverted U" on 40,75, and 80 meters and find myself busting DX pileups with a barefoot K3/100. It is quite interesting to switch between the antennas and note the performance under varying band conditions. 73s Jim, W4ATK On Jun 26, 2012, at 9:55 PM, Jeff Herr wrote: > I know folks who have had bad experiences using a "random" wire with an ATU. > > Although I ordered a buddipole with the kx3 I still am interested in getting > A 74 foot length of wire up in the pine trees (I will have a counterpoise) > while up in the > Lassen national forest.we go there a lot. > > When I mention this I am met with much skepticism. > > Am I way off base? [Elecraft] K3: Elecraft Support
I recently had the opportunity to call upon supp...@elecraft.com. I was assisted by Dale and the problem was very quickly resolved. In very short order, the replacement module was received by USPS Priority Mail and my beloved K3 was back on the air. I have over the years owned 3 elecraft radios, a couple of K2s (one in the shack now) and of course the K3. In the early years Gary Surrency was always the contact and a real pleasure to work with. And now I have had the pleasure of working with Dale. Typical of Elecraft, the office crew, and support crew, always have the customer first and I for one appreciate it. Thanks guys. Re: [Elecraft] K3 mac software and digital interfaces
I would not overlook the Navigator interface for use with the K3. In my opinion it is a bit more user friendly than some of the other interfaces and with six USB/Serial ports you will be done with that problem (CAT, PTT, WKey, FSK, An auxiliary RS232 port) and one of the quietest USB Codecs for those sound card apps I have ever seen. That being said i run MacLogger DX as a logger program, Fldigi for my PSK31, RTTY etc, Flwkey for CW, Flrig for station control. I use CrossOver and run JT65-HF and other ".exe"s I cannot do without. You will love coin' it with a Mac. Re: [Elecraft] AGC and…CW Decode
I admit it. I love my CW but am "CW Challenged". I was taught Morse code by the U.S.Navy in Radioman School and had to master 20 WPM to graduate. How I struggled. Finally after being set back two weeks I finally got 20 WPM and was able to go on to CT school for the balance of my training. I went straight down to the FCC office and got my general class ticket. Thankfully, the Navy decided to make me a non-morse operator in CT school and I spent the balance of my naval career as a CT "O branch" operator. I have been operating mostly CW since getting back on the air in 2004. I can copy call signs well at much higher speeds, but am most comfortable around 18 WPM for rag chews. I find that the CW Decode feature of the K3 to be a great assist to someone of my questionable talents. Most decoders suffer from an susceptibility to noise, so anything you can do to improve the signal to noise ratio is beneficial. The decoder in the K3 is one of the best I have ever used. When a "K3 rookie" friend asked for help in using CW Decode, I came up with a procedure I use for copy those weak DX signals. One note of caution, turning off the AGC without decreasing the RF gain before doing so, can result in a loud CRASH from your headphones or speakers. I also have the AF LIM set to protect my K3 AF amp. CW Text Decode on the K3 W4ATK style. 1) Set MODE to CW.- makes sense. 2) Set AF Gain and RF Gain fully CCW (counter clockwise, all the way to zero). 3) HOLD AGC (turns the AGC off) 4) If a special VFO B display mode is in effect CANCEL it. 5) HOLD TEXT DEC, the select CW 5-40(or 30 - 90) using VFO B. (You will see a small "T" below the CW icon on the display). 6) Adjust the threshold (THR) using VFO A, AUTO or 1 to 6. ( Around 3 to 4 works for me most of the time) 7) Tap CWT to exit. 8) Advance the RF GAIN to 50% or so. Advance the AF GAIN to a comfortable listening level 9) TUNE in a CW signal and adjust the RF GAIN for best copy. 10) After the signal is tuned in and copying, try reducing the WIDTH to 100Hz (0.1). Using this procedure I can copy some very weak CW signals, weak enough to not be easily discerned on the P3. As I move about the band looking for contact I widen the selectivity as needed and ride the RF gain. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Text Decoder
I concur with Mike's evaluation. 4.48 is much more robust than 4.51 as far as CW Decode is concerned. Some things you may want to try to improve the S/N ratio and thus make the decoder more effective. 1)Turn the AGC off and reduce the RF Gain (Be careful here and drop the AF Gain or you might get a "crash" in the audio. I have AF LIM set to 26 to protect my audio amp.) 2)Narrow the bandwidth. I often use my 400Hz roofing filter and then use the width control all the way down to 100Hz. Using these methods I was able to copy stations that were not discernible on the P3. It is a trick from the old days before product detectors etc. but I find it still works. 73s Jim, W4ATK On May 26, 2012, at 7:07 AM, Mike Harris wrote: > This could be related to the reported problem with the CWT function > previously reported and under investigation. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - RX audio degradation with ANF
I think we may be comparing apples to oranges here. In the K3 digital ANF, the notch filter is looking for coherent signals. The premise is that audio is less coherent than a CW carrier. Thus the ANF "finds" the coherent CW carrier and notches it out, leaving the remaining audio. [Elecraft] RE: K2/100 And Accessories - New ballgame per your requests.
I have recieved suggestions that I break the list up into components. I don't mind doing that so long as I do not get stuck with something I cannot sell. Example: The KPA-100 and the K2 top cover. If I sold the KPA-100 then the K2 top cover would have to go with the K2. So how to do this in a fair and equitable manner? If there is a module or configuration you want, send me an e-mail off the list, PLEASE. I will attempt to sort it all out on a first come first served basis starting with this post. Gotta make this fair for you and for me. Here is the list. [Elecraft] K2/100 no DSP Menu
When I fired up the K2 today, it was all confused and I had to do a 4-5-6 reset. After the reset I could get no DSP menu so I removed the KDSP and jumpered the audio lines in order to do the CAL FIL. At that time when I pressed the AFIL switch I got a "not installed" message as I should. After the CAL PLL, and CAL FIL operations, and putting everything back together I tapped DISPLAY to get the KDSP menu and no luck. Just Frequency and Voltage and Current. The "twins" are no longer for sale. (For the un-initiated and ill-informed the KPD factor is calculated as absPrice/knobcount, sometimes referred to as knobs per dollar). Paul, I have had both the LDG and the Elecraft ATUs. For my money I would chose the Elecraft KAT100. The KAT100 in the standard casing is low profile and is a great unit. RE: [Elecraft] What antenna should I build?
Gee, I live in a restricted neighborhood and I could not be happier with my 40M off center fed dipole I have stapled to the "ridgepole" in my garden home. I mounted a 4:1 balun at the feed point and fed it with 1/2 wavelength of coax. It works 80 thru 10 meters and is easily tuned with my KAT100 to 1:1 on 40 thru 10 and 1.2:1 on 80M. Moving from band to band changes the radiation pattern and on 20M, it has a pipeline into Europe and the Middle East. Made some nice contacts on the K2 alone, I very seldom QRO up to the big gun, the KPA100. 73s Jim, W4ATK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Low power out on 10M
Yeah, I know this subject has been kicked around for a while, but none the less. When I built the K2, I had no trouble getting the 10W out on 10M. 1) I have rewound T2 and elevated it above the board 1/16 inch. 2) Band Power at W6 Measured output. 20 -33 DBM 2.0 WATTS 10 -29.3 DBM 2.0 WATTS From the above measurements it seems that at this level the drive at W6 and the power out of the Low Pass filter at the antenna connection are tracking fairly well. 3) Band Power at W6 Measured output. 20 -26.3 DBM 10W 10 -26.7 DBM 5W The drive is still up there, but whoa nellie! What happened to the output? This is where 10M flattens out. You can ask for more power, but it just isn't there. Back in the old days, I would start replacing empty state devices. The Alabama QSO part is this weekend and I will be on, along with several of my fellow ops from the Birmingham Amateur Radio Club. Most of us will be running QRP. We will be lurking about the lower 40Khz of each band 160 thru 10M. If you are interested google "Alabama QSO Party" for the rules and schedule. I hope to see you there. RE:[Elecraft] KDSP2-settings for CW use
Karsten, I am no expert, but yes I have played with it a bit. I found everything greatly improved when I carefully aligned my filters (always with the KDSP2 in bypass) after getting tired of a 650hz sidetone( I moved it down to 500hz). Afterwards, I tweaked the KDSP2 to the filter alignment. I added quite a bit of gain (10db) and now the de-noiser is amazing. Before, when I would use the de-noiser, the signal would be degraded, but now it all seemed to come together. I now use the de-noiser quite often on weak signals. 73s Jim, W4ATK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Got a package from Lisa yesterday, assembled the KIO2 and then moved the KAT100 and the KPA100 to the EC2 enclosure. All the parts were there except the higher current choke recommended. Wound that one on a spare toroid I had and the "Twins" are on the air. I have a few extra panels, but who knows what the future holds. Now on to the new M-Cubed power meter/frequency counter. [Elecraft] CW Keyboard Program - Freeware
I have just posted to my webpage a new program, "K2Keyboard" written by yours truly. This program was developed as an add-in for K2Comm, also by yours truly(also freeware), and will be included in the next release of K2Comm. Being only 7 days younger than dirt, I have some coordination problems with aged fingers and sometimes the paddles just get away from me. I am, by nature, a bit CW challenged anyway. I was using one of the more popular keyboard programs and discovered that when running on my machine, the noise level on 30M went up about 2 - 3 s-units. Ferrite chokes et al to no avail. This program uses no timing loops and runs much, much quieter in my shack. (This will tell your age: How many of you can recall loading a card deck into a computer, placing a portable radio on the cabinet, and listening to a tune emanating from the computer? I can hear it now, "What is a card deck?" ). Of course, BandScope, K2Comm, and the BasicStamp DDS controller are still out there for the pickin' http://webpages.charter.net/w4atkontheweb 73's Jim W4ATK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Stewart wrote: "Anyone using a MicroHam microkeyer with a K2 with an outboard KPA100 ?" Stewart, As near as I can tell from the MicroHam MicroKeyer documentation, the device makes no connection to the K2 thru the K2's serial port, whether KPA100 or KI02. So I would suggest that answers your question. Your second statement does puzzle me a bit. You said, "I'm interested in how the microkeyer copes with the non standard Elecraft RS232 implementation?." As a long time and very experienced datacomm engineer, I have to ask, what is non-standard about the K2 RS-232 implementation. I find it very straight forward, requiring no handshaking, simple and up to the task. Far simpler that some of the "stuff" (cleaned that up) that I have run into in my long and now retired career. Bandscope is an application in Microsoft Visual Basic that gives a graphic representation of activity surrounding your operating frequency using the K2's serial interface. A KI02 or KPA100 is required. I think just about everyone has their copy by now so this will be the last time it will be offered on the reflector. It is offered completely free and without charge. No warranty given or implied. Use at your own risk. The zip file contains appropriate instructions. Again you may pass it to your friends, but please no download sites without the permission of the author, namely me. Again, please forward your requests off the reflector, direct to me, [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I will email you the zip file. [Elecraft] RE: Bandscope for the K2 Update
Wow! I just sent all the current users an update that includes more features. I really appreciate all the interest in this little freebie for my K2 friends. For the moment, I will suspend sending out more "packages" until I give my "beta testers", all thirty of them, time to report back any issues or suggestions they might have. The first items I sent out were a really quick and dirty, see if that is of interest and I was not prepared for the response. Not having a website means I have to create all those emails. What a lot of fun! Again, this is a freebie, no commercial interest (reserved for later. :-) :-)) Just a fun response to a post on the reflector a few weeks ago. If you want a copy, e-mail me off the reflector and I will make note of your request and once the "testers" have had the opportunity to check in, I will fill your request. For the record, I was using the program yesterday, saw a hole in the pileup for K7C on 15M. Jumped into the hole and called him three times and made the log and the map! I wish it was QRP but I had the KPA100 on line for that one. 73s Jim, W4ATK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I have found the sw38 thru sw69 commands are presetting the menu position, but to see the menu information on the LCD display, I must follow those with a sw05, "MENU", command. I am puzzled. Some time back I started a K2 control project customized just for my way of operation. I included a quick menu control utilizing the "SW38;" through "SW69;" single switch menu commands. Recently going back to the project to include some new functions, those commands no longer seem to function. I fired up hyperterminal and sure enough, everything works as expected except those commands. Have I missed something here? They are/were a really nice feature.
