[Elecraft] Power Knob Disintegrated K3
HI. I have not been at my K3 for a couple of years and today I sat down to update everything. Hopefully, I can work the 3Y. Slight problem. The power knob disintegrated in my fingers when I went to turn it. Is this normal for a K3 Ser# 5934. Re: [Elecraft] DXCC Rules
This has come up before the DXAC several years ago and they suggested to the ARRL board a mileage restriction for remote operation for DXCC acceptance and the ARRL Board totally ignored their recommendation. Two of my craziest were: Going to 80 one evening 2 hours before sunset and working VQ9QM. He even made a note on the card to express his surprise to work the US at that time. And the funny thing is no one else called him from the US. He went back to running EU which I could not hear. Sitting on 10 meters with the idea that the expedition to KH1 (SM0AGD/KH1) would be on at a certain time and they would transmit on 28595. Right about the time I figured they would be there so I called them a couple times and he came back then went split. Strangest QSL I ever received was a coconut. Yes an actual coconut that was sent via USPS and NOT packaged. Everything was pasted right to the coconut. This is more a reply to everyone and not just one specific person. I received many great responses with fantastic ideas. Some I have tried in the past some I have not. I would like to thank all of you for your ideas and well wishes. This gives me hope for mankind. On the question of RF and pacemakers/ICD's I agree there is a greater chance of getting hit by lightning than RF affecting the device BUT people do get hit by lightning so their chances are one. I have had 4 previous ICD's implanted and have done the research on all and have never had a problem so I doubt I will with this but right now, after being in the hospital since Nov 20th, I need to remote control the station for if and when it happens again. The radio simulator is not appealing to me nor will I pay someone else to use their station. I'll reply here for anyone else that may be curious. I have all of the individual components that go into making a PigRemote except for a pretty important one, the audio codec board. When I first designed PR I decided to not put the audio codec, and it's related circuitry, directly on the PR motherboard for certain reasons I'll spare you the details of. The price for manufacturing that board has gone up drastically since I last ordered, probably because I always deal in relatively small quantities and board fab shops like to address something called a burden rate when accepting jobs. I'm not sure when I'll have that critical component so I can't make any guarantees on when I might be able to get one to you. It'd probably be faster to ask this group if anyone has one for sale. The PR was primarily designed to interface with the K3 and KX3 so there should be more than a handful out there. Whether or the owners want to part with them, not sure. :) On a side note, I do have a prototype PR that works with the K3 USB connection and it's the size of a deck of cards. I should revisit that to see about making it a product offering. 73, Nick N3WG On Thu, Jan 4, 2018 at 8:51 AM, Walter Underwood <wun...@wunderwood.org> wrote: > It might be worth asking for an RF exposure limit, then doing the > station evaluation worksheet from the FCC. > > Links to worksheet here: > > http://www.arrl.org/rf-exposure > > From the Medtronic patient letter (I’d get an official, current one > for your model of pacemaker, of course): > > Maintain a distance of at least 6 inches between your heart device and: > > ♦ Antennas of cellular phones, amateur radios, ham radios, walkie > talkies of 3 watts or less. Charles, I have one problem with a statement here. QRZ.com is NOT an official callbook. Only those that sign up or others who have signed up for someone else are listed. Well, unfortunately here in the east, the solar flares have really made it difficult to hear them. I do not believe it is operator fault. Just unlucky that the sun decide to burp at the beginning and keep the A and K indexes up high. Now this may be a problem. I worked them on 12 CW and the QSO never showed. I did not work them on 10 SSB yet it shows a QSO there. So I have worked them finally both bands and now 12 CW shows but not 10 CW although they were worked 40 minutes apart. I doubt seriously the K3 keying program in the K3 Utility was designed, not only to be used on the air, but certainly not for QRQ operating. I have been a QRQ operator for about 40 years, running speeds from about 60 wpm up to around 125 wpm. I can tell you from experience that NOW the K3 will key and maintain full QSK up about 95 wpm with both weight and spacing held constant. But, in my opinion, you MUST have an external PC program capable of sending at speeds in excess of 50 wpm while maintaining weight and character spacing. That I am aware, everyone who operates QRQ has a PC on their desk, but there are very few programs available that will do it correctly. N1MM Logger Plus is a contest program, but it's keying program will run my K3 at 95 wpm and do it well. The only other program that I have used is named YPlog, written by VE6YP but unfortunately not supported for over 15 years. YPlog generates CW using Windows internal audio generation, primarily to eliminate the normal 'stutter' by PC I/O ports. High speed CW requires correctly spaced and correctly weighted generation of CW and there is no one, that I know of, who can do that by hand, so a PC is imperative. I, also, have spent the past 40 years working with computers and just consider them as another tool to be used as I see fit. Not wanting to use a PC anymore, in my opinion, basically eliminates you from getting into one of the most fun parts of our hobby, QRQ! Your choice BUT putting the blame on the K3 and the K3 Utility shows you really mistook the purpose of the K3 Utility. If you are interested I can send you the YPlog program, but you will have to build an audio full wave bridge plus a keying transistor to key your K3 at speeds. 73, Tom - W4BQF -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Marc Veeneman Sent: Monday, August 3, 2015 5:23 PM To: David F. But I will not be selling it. That was the summary. Here, at great length, is the detail: I had a KX3 with KXPA100 and liked it very much. I'm a CW operator and hope to join the QRQ gang some day soon. But I spent the past 40 years working with computers and I don't want one in my shack. I prefer to have minimal equipment at the operating desk. With that in mind, I saw the pictures of the PX3 with the word Keyboard stenciled over a USB socket. I ordered the PX3 and separately order a folding wireless keyboard to match. The PX3 arrived and it changed my operating for the better. Seeing the entire band instead of slowly tuning for CW signals adds a whole new dimension to my hobby. But the Keyboard USB socket was useless and the sort-of-promise that the keyboard option would be ready by Christmas went sort-of-unfulfilled. Meanwhile, the K3/P3/SVGA combo has a keyboard option and my CW speed is increasing so I ordered the K3 combo. It cost a lot more than the KX3 had. As soon as the gear arrived I set it up with my yet-unused wireless keyboard and commenced to play with it. Trouble. Letters, and sometimes whole words went missing. CTRL-S has to be hit every so often to force a buffer dump. And sporadically there are pauses of several seconds when sending just stops and CTRL-S fails. However, the buffer dump might resume on its own. My phone call to Elecraft gave me bad news. My wireless keyboard was not approved by Elecraft so there would be no support for it. I ordered a USB keyboard, waited for its arrival, and discovered no difference. I still had all the same problems with the wired, approved keyboard. Then more bad news from Elecraft: operating the keyboard without a VGA monitor is not approved. If you recall, I wanted minimal equipment in the shack; in fact that's why I wanted the keyboard option instead of the KX3 (now K3) Utility program for sending CW. Now I learned that I have to have a screen on the desk as well. I purchased a VGA monitor and tried again. Still all the same issues. So Elecraft asked that I send the P3 with keyboard to them to find out what might be wrong. I did so. After the normal UPS transit time, 5 days each way, and a sufficient time

Re: [Elecraft] RM-11708 proposal to FCC threatens CW and digital modes
The worst part of the quote from the yachtsman that really ticks me off is where he says: Its a great service because all of the other available Internet services cost money. Really? We end up with this QRM so boaters don't have to pay for internet services? In my comments to the FCC I stated that if there is an emergency and the faster communications is needed then the FCC has the ability to declare an emergency and allow otherwise unauthorized modes. Just like they do when they set aside a certain frequency. This is not an emergency nor is the guy checking his email a reason to change rules to suite them! The proponents say this will not cause problems. What I see is the interference this will cause to these stations amongst themselves in there narrow bandspace, they will then start moving out from each other taking up more and more bandspace! Moving other modes out as they do so. This is a disaster waiting to happen. BTW, this affects ALL amateurs so this crosses in to the on topic line. If this comes to fruition there will be a mass exodus of regular hams and this will affect not only Elecraft but all ham radio manufacturers! 73, Tim Herrick, KQ8M k...@kq8m.com AR-Cluster V6 kq8m.no-ip.org User Ports: 23, 7373 with local skimmer, 7374 without local skimmer Server Ports: V6 3607, V4 Active 3605, V4 Passive 3606 -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Sandy Blaize Sent: Monday, June 23, 2014 10:59 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] RM-11708 proposal to FCC threatens CW and digital modes think my comments on RM-11708 went thru. This is very serious to ANYONE who wants to retain narrow band digital communications like JT9 and PSK31 and RTTY!! Also to CW Dxers and contesters! If this passes, it will change amateur radio as we have known it forever. There will be no weak signal operation possible with the onset of digital noise in the analog receiver. IF THIS IS REALLY A NECESSARY DIGITAL MODE, it belongs somewhere in a segment of the phone band sub-band and NOT THE narrow band digital and CW band. I think this is REALLY a back door attempt to silence Continuous wave telegraphy..really! I hope the old timers and the newbies who are still hanging on to CW will write comments against this sneaky move ARRL is backing to satisfy mostly the Yacht crowd who want to access the internet via HF radio! It will violate the 300 baud or less rule of keeping wideband digital OUT of the narrow band digital space! Don't rely on the FCC to nix this RM as there isn't any real engineers at the FCC anymore, just lawyers, bean counters and political hacks running things there now. Proof of this is higher authorities bypassing FCC and making rules that stand now in the new 60 meter band. There is evidently a short window of opportunity to submit comments to the FCC about this, and there are instructions on the noted websites for how to do this online within just a few minutes. If you google for RM-11708 you can read some well-reasoned comments submitted by other hams to the FCC electronic docket. I can't evaluate the claims being made about ARRL's motivation but it seems important not to allow such bad interference, so I submitted a comment. I use Win4K3. It works extremely well in rig control for the K3 and you don't pay for all the fluff nor have to pay a yearly fee for ongoing updates. I am always amazed at those that point to a chart and say there are contests every weekend. I only operate the big contests of which there are 5 a year that affect each mode that I can think of. I'm sorry but just because a band is not full of signals does not make it right to have a poor signal. In fact, I don't see anywhere in the FCC regulations that states you can do whatever you want as long as you don't bother someone else. To the other gentleman, I would like to ask for a link to the study that shows 98% of contesters have poor audio. CQ magazines contests are now disqualifying stations with poor audio or signals on CW. That has been a bug in the bonnet of most contesters for some time. They're not bothering anyone except the bandwidth police who complain about a 6 or 8 kHz wide AM signal, too, as being horrible on 75 meters when the band is otherwise DEAD. (ESSB sounds darn good on a receiver with wide bandwidth and good audio response, and the AM community in general are good neighbors on the bands). We have enough trouble with HOA's beating us up - why do we insist on beating up on our fellow hams who might enjoy some aspect of ham radio that we don't? I don't understand it, other than reflecting some drive to be IN CONTROL of what others are allowed to do, not because it affects us personally, or is even good for the hobby, but just . because . control. I rarely bother to even turn on the radio when the ever increasing number of contests ruins the bands for me - but I also don't spend all of my time trying to outlaw contests . We each have points of view. But there's a tendency to treat this whole bandwidth nonsense as a religious war (I know, I'm guilty, too) - which isn't a good thing. I think Gary's intent is don't be dependent on a CW decoder to copy for you. If you don't get that L the first time listen for the next time. Being our hobby, you all know there are many aspects of it that, not all, but some of us enjoy and there has been a small percentage of us, Toby, myself, and others that have enjoyed running CW speeds in excess of 50 wpm. It should be quite obvious that as you get higher in CW speed the need for accuracy in sending code becomes more important. And obviously very few hams can use a hand key and send correctly formed and correctly spaced Morse letters at speeds exceeding about 40 wpm. Thus the vast majority of us use PC programs and keyboards for talking with each other using CW. When operating at higher speeds in the non-QRQ mode, the K3 starts sending choppy characters above about 35 wpm. In the QRQ mode, as Toby stated, the K3 loses some useful functions such as RIT, XIT, split, etc., however it will produce (on my K3) correctly formed CW characters up to about 94 wpm. This subject has been discussed on this reflector for the past 3 years and the Elecraft response has been 'we are working on it'. However those of us who would love to have the QRQ capability without the loss of any useful functions, now pretty much understand that it is not going to happen, thus Toby's and my conclusion that it is not a worthwhile subject for discussion any longer. 73, Tom - W4BQF -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Phil Hystad Sent: Sunday, April 13, 2014 11:35 AM To: Stephen Prior Cc: Elecraft Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Side Effects of QRQ On The K3 Hopefully I will find some time to do more experiments this afternoon (maybe not, it will be a sunny day) but sending at 30 wpm is always error prone for me and it takes more effort that is not that comfortable. A lot on their bug list has been there for some time and they seem in no hurry to fix anything. 73, Tim Herrick, KQ8M Charter Member North Coast Contesters k...@kq8m.com AR-Cluster V6 kq8m.no-ip.org User Ports: 23, 7373 with local skimmer, 7374 without local skimmer Server Ports: V6 3607, V4 Active 3605, V4 Passive 3606 -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Joe Subich, W4TV Sent: Sunday, March 02, 2014 9:42 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - new release of HRD It appears that a public beta has been released for paid users. Fairly cool! Doesn't work in contests when N1MM owns the CAT, but all the other times, it just does work. I'm pretty much CW, I pretty much run the CWT, so I see nothing on the S-meter above S9. Now, I've been in this hobby for 60 years, I know none of this really matters, but seeing an S-Meter that looks vaguely like the one on my SX-28 as a teenager is sort of cool. Still trying to figure out what the dB/uv scale under the S-scale means. I calibrated my K3 S-meter to S9 = -73dBm using my service monitor which hasn't been calibrated in at least 2 decades. Hey, this is amateur radio, just having fun here. P3 tracks with the K3 S-meter which is reassuring. If W4SMT is listening, would be great to be able to fool with the averaging, like the P3. On the other hand, I couldn't do that on my SX-28, so nothing lost there. Google W4SMT S-meter, you'll get a lot of posts [probably including this one], but the app is in there somewhere. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2014 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 2014 - www.cqp.org __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] RepetitiveK on 7.039.3 question
I found this on wiki: Cluster beacons A group of radio beacons with single-letter identifiers (C, D, M, S, P, A, M and K) have been regularly reported in small spectrum segments centered around 3594, 4558, 5154, 7039, 8495, 10872, 13528, 16332 and 20048 kHz. Re: [Elecraft] [OT] RBW of CW Skimmer?
To be of the engineering sense then everyone would have to have exactly the same gear and exact same noise level. Only the location could be different for signal comparisons. These are unobtainable. What the RBN does give you is an idea on how you sound in whatever part of the world is hearing and with what equipment they use. K1TTT is going to hear much better than KQ8M because of his antenna advantage BUT KQ8M does occasionally hear stations better that K1TTT due to propagation. If you're a strict number cruncher then stay away but if you want to know if you are being heard elsewhere and an idea of how well then use the RBN. 73, Tim Herrick, KQ8M Charter Member North Coast Contesters k...@kq8m.com AR-Cluster V6 kq8m.no-ip.org User Ports: 23, 7373 with local skimmer, 7374 without local skimmer Server Ports: V6 3607, V4 Active 3605, V4 Passive 3606 -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Al Lorona Sent: Monday, January 14, 2013 1:54 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [OT] RBW of CW Skimmer? I will give your instructions a try and connect one up to my Win 7 machine again. I have never used the 0204 to listen from. It has only been used for the input from the SDR/LPan. I will give it another shot nevertheless. The best thing about Win 7 is having the ability to set the cards parameters from within the sound applet through the Control Panel. One happy discovery that might help eliminate some E-MU 0204 USB soundcard driver angst for Win 7 64 bit users: Windows 7 64 bit has an E-MU driver resident in the operating system. This driver will *not* automatically install when the 0204 card is first plugged in, but is easily installed from Device Manager via the Update Driver utility. Win 7 will find the driver and install the 0204 card in about 5 seconds. The driver does not seem to have a graphical user interface, but works fine on my system with NaP3 for sampling rates up to 192K. This driver is dated 11-12-2010 and is version 6.6.1.1 by Creative Labs. Follow Larry's instructions for defaulting the sample rate to 192 K in Windows mixer setup and set the output to something other than the EMU 0204 in NaP3 setup and it should work well. Bill, WA4KBD -- FYI to all reading this thread: The 4GB RAM issue only appears to affect playback. The problem is that the audio will break up/lose sync after a period of time. This only applies, of course, if you actually listen to the output of the SDR. If you select another sound card in the Output selection in NaP3, it will be fine. You really don't need 192kHz for playback, since the widest filter is 10kHz. So any sound card will do just fine, including a built in one. You can still select the E-MU for Input and use 192kHz sampling for input. Therefore, you don't need to give up your extra RAM. Re: [Elecraft] SDR_Sound_Cards
I'm sorry, Larry, but I have to totally disagree with you about the 0204. Yes, it works well on an XP machine but why have they only released beta drivers for it when it was first manufactured but have failed to build any newer drivers? Why is it you cannot download ANY drivers for this from their own website? I will search tomorrow but I will find the posts in Creative's own forums from people that used it in real hard core audio apps. The box snaps, crackles and pops and drops out. I could not even get it to work for longer than an hour on 96kHz. Yes, that is a HUGE complaint among the audiophiles. I do agree on the 2496. It is a very good stable card. I have found the ASUS cards to work pretty well also. The Xonar Essence and the Xonar DG have been running here very well for 6 months. I still have not been about to get the 1212m PCIe to work but have not spent a lot of time on it. It seems to me none of the creative cards work very well. They always have some sort of mirror image. I am judging these cards using CWSkimmer. With that application you cannot have any mirror image or it spots those mirror images erroneously. Most people can get away with mirror images that are down from the main signal as they would never know they are there. 73, Tim Herrick, KQ8M Charter Member North Coast Contesters k...@kq8m.com AR-Cluster V6 kq8m.no-ip.org User Ports: 23, 7373 with local skimmer, 7374 without local skimmer Server Ports: V6 3607, V4 Active 3605, V4 Passive 3606 -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of N8LP Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2012 8:52 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] SDR_Sound_Cards I'm not sure what problems you're having, but the 0202 and 0204 in my tests perform better than any of adozen cards I have tested except the E-MU 1212m. Unfortunately the 0204 does not work very well with Win 7. The only drivers they have come out with are beta and they have never finished them. It cuts out and has to be restarted. Also the audio is very poor for the 96/192 modes in W7. Mine works fine with XP though but wouldn't work very well on my W7 box. Yet still no Comm with K3Util for some reason. On to the questions. The computer is plugged in. I have tried two FTDI adapters and one Prolific. All seem to work with the logger but not the utility. There is no P3 or LPbridge involved. It does NOT pass the K3 utility test (with exception below). It keeps trying to connect at all speeds without luck. The K3 is at 4800 for what it is worth. Without passing the port test I am not surprised to see all question marks listed when I look at the Firmware tab. Uninstalling and reinstalling the Utility did not help. Dick's other suggestion gave me a confusing result. Even though I know (based on the working logger program, perhaps a faulty assumption) the K3 is on Com10 at 4800 bit/s the Util can't find it there. At his suggestion I tested all the other ports that show up in the drop down window. They were Com 3, 10, 11, 17 and 18. K3Util thinks it is connecting to the K3 on Com 3 at 38400 bit/s as indicated in the Port tab. When I then click on the Firmware tab it still has ??.?? listed for all firmware versions in my K3. I also noticed that the terminal tab is greyed out and not working so I suspect the Util is not really communicating with the K3. Another suggestion that just came in is to Uninstall all the port drivers in Win7 device manager and reinstall them. Not something I am looking forward to but can try. I feel I will fix it or break it real good trying that. I am still confused why the logger works and Util doesn't. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - panadapter or subreceiver
I do not have a P3 but I do have the subreceiver in my K3. I have found it totally indispensible. How many times have you hit the wrong VFO when going back and forth in a split pileup only to draw the ire of half of the world and being called many descriptive adjectives? Being able to have the second receiver in my right ear and the main one in my left is extremely nice. Listening to the DX station and having the ability to immediately tune the second VFO to where the DX is listening is priceless. 73, Tim Herrick, KQ8M Charter Member North Coast Contesters k...@kq8m.com K3 Serial #5934 AR-Cluster V6 kq8m.no-ip.org User Ports: 23, 7373 with local skimmer, 7374 without local skimmer Server Ports: V6 3607, V4 Active 3605, V4 Passive 3606 -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Bruce McLaughlin Sent: Tuesday, July 03, 2012 10:24 AM To: Keith Heimbold Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net; eric manning Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - panadapter or subreceiver I tend to 2nd that recommendation. I have both the P3 and a 2nd receiver in my K-3. I have the same filters for the sub receiver as the main receiver, although, I have never used diversity receive. I think the P3 is particularly helpful to check on band activity before you decide whether or not to switch to that band. For that, the 2nd receiver can obviously be useful. However, as far as actual operating is concerned. If I encounter a DX station using split I find that using RIT is sometimes quicker and faster than setting up a 2nd receiver and using split. Of course, if the split being used is wider than what is available with RIT then, of course you have no choice. All of this depends upon your operating habits. But I think it is a good idea to consider a P3 1st and then the 2nd receiver if you find that could be useful. By the way, I find the P3 much more useful than LP pan. It does not tie up the computer which I can then use for other things such as logging or station co ntrol. Part of that preference was caused by the fact that I did not make the If gain modification to my K-3 and so the LP display showed very low amplitude signals which were often not very useful. That of course was my fault. I find the P3 has enough gain that the if was not required. That is not an issue with newer K-3s which already have the higher gain Incorporated on the board. I use the second receiver on 6m with my new SteppIR 6m passive and my 6m stack because I can have the antennas pointed in different directions which is super cool. If I had to choose between one or the other I would go with the Panadapter or P3. Re: [Elecraft] PACTOR iii
Please tell me, what constitutes a clear frequency? No activity for a preselected time period? What if a DX operator goes to the John and takes 5 minutes? There are others on the frequency to say the frequency is in use until one of the digital boxes says, wait it's been 5 seconds, the frequency must be clear so I can start transmitting and ignore all those telling me it is in use! Lord knows how many times I have seen that happen and you are hoping this pacwhatever will shut up long enough that you can hear the DX. Also, just because the Pacbox doesn't hear a signal does not mean the frequency is not in use. The station on the frequency can be weak but some with antennas can hear them and BAM BRAP...BRRR. WTF. I believe the Kenwood adapter has a blocking capacitor that will prevent the bias voltage from reaching the mic element. Re: [Elecraft] Annoying contests
In answer to your suggestion, there already are areas. 3.600-3.650, 7.100-7.125, 14.100-14.150, 21.100-21.150, 28.100-28.150. During even the biggest contests those areas are usually free of contesters. There are maybe 10 weekends out of 52 that major contests take place. And they always take place the same weekend of the year, year after year. That leaves 42 weekends for non contest activities. Sure there are other smaller non major contests but they do not take up the whole band but just a small portion of it. Also there are no contests during the week. I am at a loss at those that hate contests as to why their will has to be imposed upon all. Your sched on 14.050 does not have to be etched in stone. Unless you are using a really antique radio, there are things on the radio called knobs and dials. Usually the biggest one will tune your radio to other frequencies. Plan ahead. Oh Jack, I see there is a major contest next weekend. How about we meet on 30/17/12 meters? Or another day. Or, heaven forbid, we miss one. In the case of the ECN net, it is just a check in, my temp is and we got 20 inches of snow. That can also be done on a WARC band. Emergency communications in the case of major storm or earthquake or whatever is always taken into account by the contest community. If a set area in the band is set aside for the big one when it hits California, if it is a contest weekend, it WILL be avoided by the contest community. It has happened in the past and will happen again in the future. Out of all of the possible things to do in amateur radio my likes are DXing and Contesting. That doesn't mean I am going to knock SSTV guys or Satellite guys or moon bounce guys. That is what they enjoy and more power to them. However, if I want a regular qso, I usually find even the high end of the cw bands to be too crowded in the case of major contests. I have to argue against letting contests take over the entire non-WARC bands, for one reason only: Emergency communications. Although 30m is often good for low power operation, that is not always the case, and not every portable rig covers it. Quite often in portable operation only a single band works well enough that you can make a contact with low power and a mediocre antenna; that band is very often not a WARC band. Here is an idea: Carve out a section of each non-WARC band, for a given contest, where contest operation is not allowed. It would have to be a section where most licensees are allowed to operate, in most countries. If the contest organizer receives multiple reports saying that a contest participant operated in the non-contest window, that participant would be penalized. There could be multiple windows carved out in a given contest, to satisfy different license classes and countries. The contests would be more crowded? Yes, but the non-contest windows could be small, and crowding in contests seems to drive great improvements in equipment to compensate. WARC bands deserve more use, and it would truly make sense to conduct some nets there. Flame away! 73, Erik K7TV snip The high end of the CW portion of the bands aren't that crowded. Re: [Elecraft] RST Reports
Actually I believe that has been under discussion in the contest community for quite a long time. Just like the DX pileup where you are supposed to copy your signal report for a good contact, the same is supposed to be used in contests. Since it is always 599, I agree, it should be removed as part of the exchange in both contests and DXing but I do believe the powers that be that run the various contests and DX awards are stuck in the past and think it should always be a requirement. Re: [Elecraft] K3 spurious radiation?
Just an FYI, the W3LPL spots are not his skimmer. He has special code that re-spots skimmers that are sent to the Reverse Beacon Network. He has a skimmer system but the ones you see on the clusters is not that network. The skimmer operators only dump their decodes to the RBN. Well the ones that know what is going on do. During contests, the big gun stations have a local network of skimmers that they connect to to help with locating DX. These are also not seen by the general public. Some of us cluster operators also have a local skimmer or are connected to a skimmer but these spots are only seen on our nodes. Mine only has my local skimmers. These can also be filtered out. I am running the beta code of V6 ARCluster which allows connecting to a skimmer and only allowing the spots locally. I just mentioned that on the reflector a week or so ago and a large number of people said the same thing; contact Elecraft and let them know and you will get new knobs in a few days. I had the same problem as you with the K3 I built a few months ago and just kind of lived with it till I was told to get new ones. Problem solved. 73's Tim Herrick, KQ8M North Coast Contesters k...@kq8m.com K3 Serial #5934 -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of NZ8J Sent: Sunday, January 08, 2012 1:04 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 #6150 K3/100 kit sn 6150 arrived yesterday just in time for the weekend. Took my time today and it went together in about 8 hours, with no significant issues. Everything worked according to the manual as I expected. There is one issue that is somewhat irritating though. The AF and RF knobs cannot be nested as they should be to fit properly. In order to be able to turn the AF gain or RF gain without having them catch on the larger respective SUB knobs they have to be pulled out so they won't catch. They are visibly out of alignment. A quick search of the archives revealed a rather long 2 /1/2 year old thread about some defective knobs. The gist of the thread was not so much about them cracking or breaking as some had experienced, it was because they were off center and would not allow for a proper installation. Apparently whatever the issue was, it is still there 2 1/2 years later as the one I received yesterday has the same problem. It's hard to understand how a product can be so well designed and the manufacturing tolerances so close (take the cabinet parts and pieces as one example) but yet something as seemingly simple as a plastic knob some 2 1/2 years after an in-depth discussion that Elecraft was part of are still being manufactured and delivered out of tolerance. I don't have a problem with the intended look or feel of the knobs, I think they are fine, just the fact they turn out so badly in many cases and detract from the end product. I was having a lot of fun putting this together today until I got to the part where I installed the knobs, big disappointment! I have a set of the Mouser machined aluminum knobs and although they are smooth and have a nice feel they just don't match the rest of the knobs to my liking, I wonder if anyone has come up with an alternative to the Mouser knobs? Re: [Elecraft] Amazing!
Can someone direct me to construction guides besides the Ant Handbook. That thing drives me nuts. hi hi I would like to build one for 40/80 mtr receiving. Possibly others for 30 on up. I have had some surprising results with a 40M mag loop I built from hardline (real cheap) as well as an *all out* (that means big bucks blown) 20 meter mag loop that I built from 1.5 copper pipe, a Jennings vacuum variable, and a 1 rpm motor from Edmunds Scientific. My best DX so far (confirmed) is UA1CE on 900 mw on 20M with my KX1 for about 6500 miles. The darn thing was sitting on my driveway about 3 off the ground. My personal findings: Superb receive antenna; lousy transmitting antenna; highly directional; Incredibly quiet compared to my doublet; extremely narrow bandwidth. It's presently sitting in the garage. I haven't given up on it but I much prefer my doublet and end fed half wave toys at this time. But frankly, for someone - anyone - who has *severe* antenna restrictions to contend with, the mag loop is most certainly worth reading up on. It's not a toy! 73, Stan WB2LQF On Wed, Jan 4, 2012 at 5:52 PM, Gary D Krause wrote: Ignacy, I agree. That's why I like mag loops. I've built three of them and I'm getting ready to build a forth. They are quieter than my home brewed 30' multi-band vertical and I can pick out signals a little better when band conditions aren't so great. Add the quiet K2 and signals pop out of nowhere.
