I like 1/4 inch plugs too, but most rigs nowadays have 3.5mm jacks!
You can use an adapter, but that forfeits the purpose.

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 headset on K3S and KX3?

2020-05-07 Thread Bill Frantz

I normally use a CM500.

OK, the RS60CF is a Radio Sport head set. :-)

I used one of their headsets during our club's CQP county
expedition. I liked the isolation from ambient room noise. Yes,
it squeezes your head, but I could wear it for several hours at
a time without feeling I was getting close to the end of my tolerence.

I didn't use VOX at home in CA because my radio was set up in
the family room with 20+ feet of space between the backs of the
equipment and the front door. (Nice for moving wires.) My wife
frequently would walk up to the radio and ask a question and I
didn't want the answer going out on the air. :-)

I did use VOX when I did a multi-op WPX contest at K9YC's QTH.
In that isolated environment it was more convenient than my
footswitch at home. Doing the contest was also a whole lot of
fun, and watching the other ops was a excellent learning experience.

What I'll end up doing here in NH is still up in the air.

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 headset on K3S and KX3?

2020-05-07 Thread Edward R Cole
A couple years ago I bought the CM500 based on al the nice comments
by others on this list. They failed me terribly; set up howling like
a banshee minute I put them on (over my hearing aids) and not even
connected to the radio. My hearing so poor that the amount of gain
in my hearing aids fed back inside the acoustics of the
ear-piece. No amount of fiddling with the headset stopped the
feedback, so went back to wearing my Sony MDR-V600 stereo headset
(which work well with my hearing aids). One if you bought the new
CM500 from me for a nice discount, so I didn't loose out completely.

I got a lot of advice back then which did not help/fix the problem
(not wearing the hearing aids and turning up radio volume was one).

In stead, I found a boom mic that attached to my Sony headset via an
earth magnet "thingy" and that got FB audio reports. The mic has a
foam wind-blast reducer and selectable omni or cardiod pattern pick
up. Haven't really used the combo as I normally use my Heil desk
mic in the shack. The boom mic was obtained for operating portable outdoors.

That's a characteristic of nearly all DIRECTIONAL mics -- those that On
provide a single rear opening the capsule to cancel sound from the rear.
Variable-D mics, virtually all of which today are made by Electro-Voice,
have multiple openings along the "handle" of the mic body to provide the
cancellation, and they have very little of that bass build-up. The
earliest made by EV was the model 666, called "the Buchanan Hammer"
because EV was in Buchanan, MI, and Lou Burroughs, who along with Al
Kahn founded EV in the '30s, demonstrated the ruggedness of the new 666
to broadcast conventions by driving nails with it.

When Lou wanted to retire, they sold the company to Gulton Industries.
Al took his share and started Ten Tec, across the street from their mic
and speaker factory in Sevierville, TN. Al was K4FW. I worked him once,
on CW, using one of his radios. I was mobile from a campground in AR.

Shure and AKG both made variable-D mics for several decades, but I don't
think they still do. Modern variable-D mics are the EV RE10, RE11, RE15,
RE16, RE18, and RE20. Last I looked, only the RE16 and RE20 were still
in production, but there may be new models since I was active in the
biz. The RE20 is quite popular as an announce mic.

I know of no variable-D electret mics.

Those headsets are EXPENSIVE, the mics are low impedance PRO mics, and
are designed to provide maximum noise rejection. IF they are electrets,
they won't work with ham gear without a preamp that provides Phantom
Power (NOT the same as bias).

I have used the CM500 for many years. I have replaced the ear muffs with
Koss's version. However, like Grant, I bought a RS60CF and have not looked
back. Unlike Joe, I find them very comfortable, even after many hours in a
contest. They cut out extraneous noise very well. The K3 TX equalizer
provides excellent audio response.

I use a pair of CM500's for portable work. So far, I've not had to use the
spare set in spite of a lot of use and abuse. When we do Field Day for real
again, I will likely use the RS60CF set to cut down on the inevitable
background chatter the CM500 doesn't.

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 headset on K3S and KX3?

2020-05-06 Thread Fred Jensen
History is more than a little ambiguous. Wikipedia ascribes the "first
high-powered" Talk Box to Bob Heil [K9EID] for Joe Walsh, [WB6ACU] which
was a 250 watt amp + hi-pass filter.  However, Walsh credits an EE and
steel guitarist [Bill West] with inventing it.

Peter Townshend claims to have invented a version of the Talk Box during
a Who tour in 1976.  However, Bob Heil sold the manufacturing rights to
Dunlop Mfr. building them to Heil's 1973 design standards.  Peter
Frampton says he first heard a Talk Box in 1970, and that Bob Heil gave
him a custom built one as a Christmas present in 1974.  He became
proficient at it and is now often associated with it.  It appears that
every musical performer since then has used a Talk Box and at least a
few assert invention.

I use a Heil ProSet IC however I'm rarely on SSB.  When I have been on,
I often get unsolicited "great audio" comments, no doubt because of my
sonorous broadcast voice as much as the proset. [:=)  I use a CM-500
when operating W7RN remotely but I've never done phone remote.  I find
the ProSet to be a little easier on the ears with prolonged use than the
CM-500, but both work well for me.  As has been mentioned, a lot depends
on how you place the mic and how you tailor the TX response and
compression.  I guess all microphones tend to accentuate the bass as you
get closer and closer, exactly the opposite of what you want for
communications. Electrets seem to be fairly immune to this, the old
classic RCA 44-BX was notorious for the effect.

Do not get the Koss SB40. That is the same headset as the Yamaha CM500, but

The mic connector on my Yamaha CM500 is labeled “KOSS”, for what that’s worth.
I noticed that when choosing photos for my blog post.

Over the years I have worn out 2 of the SB-40s and always had good audio
reports. You can sound terrible on any mike if they aren't used correctly.

2020-05-06 Thread Walter Underwood
$35 is too much for this mic adapter. It probably reflects the small lot
manufacturing cost, but you don’t need to pay that.

This adapter costs $5.45 and does the same thing.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B68O5H/

The KX3 mic connection is TRRS, but Ring 2 and Sleeve are both connected to
ground. They are labeled mic ground and logic ground, but they are tied
together inside the radio, so a TRS plug works just fine. The wiring detail is
from the Fred Cady book.

2020-05-06 Thread Jim Brown
Probably like Baufong radios, rip-offs of someone else's product. No,
I've never heard of it. A story.

A colleague in pro audio, excellent engineer, designer of sound systems
in the US Senate, House, and White House, wanted to do a good deed for
rock and roll churches who used a lot of mics. He imported mics from a
company in China. Samples were great, so he placed an order. Production
quality was VERY different. Like Baufong, we're talking $40-$60 for mics
competing with EU mics that sell for $1,000 - $1,500.

Quality companies like Shure and Switchcraft have long huge problems
with counterfeits of their products, and counterfeit mechanical and
structural parts have long been a problem for manufacturers. I remember
reading about that in the aircraft industry more than a decade ago.

Of course. This particular headset has an inferior dynamic mic, according to
reviews. At this price point, I’d expect electrets to be the best performers.

If I was going to upgrade my headset, I’d start with headsets used by sports
broadcasters and ENG teams. Is it still called “electronic news gathering”?

K6LL, a serious contester, likes this headset. I noted this in a piece I

There is nothing inherently inferior about dynamic mics, especially for
speech -- the vast majority of mics used in sound reinforcement and
broadcasting are dynamic mics. But like any technology, some products
are better than others.

It is normal for earpads to wear out. I replaced the pads on my Grado SR225e
phones after five years.

Yes. I replace earpads on my Sony MDR7506 periodically.

For many things we wear, comfort can be important, and, with headsets,
that depends on the size and shape of our heads and even our ears, as
well as the design and manufacturing quality of the headset. For many
years, I've slept wearing Sony MDR7506 phones listening to jazz, and I
also use them working CW-only contests. I find the CM500 equally
comfortable.

I bought a pair of CM500’s when they became all the rage a few years ago.
Never liked them. The mic sounds ok, but they’re just too loosely-goosey a fit
and I find them fiddly and not very stable on the head. I used them for a
while and tossed them into the pile of too much stuff I bought and don’t use.

Replaced them eventually with an RS60CF, and never looked back. Cable sets for
both the KX3 and K3(K4). And yes — I know there are a lot of people who don’t
like those, either. But I do. All a matter of personal choice, I guess :-)
David Clark makes a small and inexpensive soft-case that fits them perfectly,
too.

My CM500’s earpads are flaking pretty badly, leaving little back bits around
the home office/shack. They still work fine. I purchased them in December 2012.
I see that the same order has Eneloop XX batteries and a LowePro Edit 140 case,
so that was all ordered to go with my brand-new KX3.

Comments on my blog post suggested the Koss SB45 as another alternative. This
also has an electret mic, but somewhat different fit over the ears, and it is

The mic connector on my Yamaha CM500 is labeled “KOSS”, for what that’s worth.
I noticed that when choosing photos for my blog post.

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 headset on K3S and KX3?

2020-05-06 Thread Lyn Norstad
Jim -

There is a (presumably Chinese) mic known as the BM800 which is marketed
under several different names. I am currently using one on a boom with
shock mount, wind screen and foot switch just because I like hands-free
operation ... and am too frugal (i.e.: cheap) to spend the $$ for a Heil
equivalent.

Are you familiar with this mic, and what are your thoughts? I get excellent
reports with it on my (non-Elecraft) rig.

Heil products are an example of better sound through marketing. They're
more expensive because they spend a lot of money on advertising to
convince hams they're worth it. They also claim to make pro mics. I've
been a member of the AES Standards Committee WG on microphones for more
than 25 years, in which virtually all major microphone companies are
represented. No one from the company is listed as a member, and I've
never met Bob Heil or anyone from his company. Hams seem to think that
because he did sound for a major rock band that his mics were good.

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 headset on K3S and KX3?

2020-05-05 Thread Don Wilhelm

Frank,

Although the K3S rear jack is marked mono, it is actually a stereo jack,
but the ring connects to nothing - so no harm.

On the KX3, look in the manual for the MIC jack connections. It should
tell you why you need to be aware of the situation that the CM500 plug
can present.

Walt Underwood K6WRU has presented a link to an adapter that will allow
you to plug the CM500 mic plug into a jack leaving the other jack
available for us as PTT. Use of that adapter does not require you to set
MIC BTN to off.

Be careful, not just any adapter will do - some are simple splitters
that put both the tip and ring on both jacks.

The only thing I'm concerned about is the issue of mono vs stereo
plugs. For example, the CM500's mike plug has stereo-style contacts,
whereas the mic in jack on the K3S is marked "mono." There aren't any
issues there?

I'm looking at is being a bit player on a couple of nets very

Frank;

The rear-panel mic input on the K3 and K3S is actually a stereo jack. The ring
connector is not connected. Plug the CM-500’s mic plug in (as I do), and it
will work just fine!
Remember to enable bias on the rear panel Mic as W3FPR noted.

The CM-500 is an excellent headset for use with the K3. You should get many
years of excellent service form it.

 I adapters needed.

CM500 plugs right into the rear Mic and Phone jack on K3(s).

Also the KX3, just turn OFF Bias and Buttons.

PTT is available on rear PTT RCA jack on K3(s) and Tip and Shield on KX3
Accessary jack ( a 3/32 TRS Jack next to the I/Q Jack). Use switch of your
choice; an old J38 works real well here. Use the “shoring bar” for long
conversations.

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 headset on K3S and KX3?

2020-05-05 Thread Paul Gacek via Elecraft
Frank

For what its worth and everyones milage will vary, I had a brand new CM500 that
I used for a week of hard operating while on a pretty island and the boom came
loose after a couple of days. Since then I have reliably used the Elecraft sold
Heil Proset at home and other pretty islands. Ironically I bought the CM500 as
I didn't want my Heil abused in transit or when operating away from home.

From memory no additional adapters are needed for use with the KX3 and I find
it easier (but friends don’t) to use VOX.

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 headset on K3S and KX3?

2020-05-05 Thread Walter Underwood
For the KX3, an off-the-shelf stereo-to-mono splitter will separate the mic and
PTT lines. It also separates the mic bias (clean) from the logic signal (not so
clean). Details here:

https://observer.wunderwood.org/2015/08/16/yamaha-cm500-headset-with-ptt-on-elecraft-kx3/

For transmit audio setup, I collected various bits of knowledge from the manual
and this list into a single article.

Packaging still does say dynamic (as of a December 2018 purchase), but it IS
an electret for sure.

The packaging used to say “Dynamic” mic. But it’s not. It’s an electret.

And it comes with a small battery box to provide the bias when using with
radios that don’t provide bias on the audio jack.

Yes I always find it interesting they include a battery pak but say it's
dynamic. Most all of the descriptions I've seen indicate it is a dynamic

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 Mic ?

2019-01-28 Thread Walter Underwood
If you are using a KX2 or KX3, you’ll get logic bias as well as mic bias on the
CM500 mic. If you separate out the mic bias, you’ll get more and cleaner
output. A stereo to L/R splitter will do that job, plus it breaks out the PTT
line. I wrote that up on my blog.

2019-01-28 Thread Don Wilhelm

Paul,

While I have seen ads saying it has a dynamic element, that is not the
case - it is an electret type.

I believe it was designed to be a microphone you could plug into a
computer, and all of those are electret types.

[Elecraft] CM500 Mic

2011-11-10 Thread W0MU Mike Fatchett
I just got a pair of the CM500's and they work pretty good.

My mic setting is on 3 to keep from over driving the alc on the radio.
Is this normal for this mic. I have Low Z selected and Bias. My Heil
elements the mic gain is much higher.

Yes, it is pretty normal, because the mic in the CM500 is a pretty hot
mic (that is, high output). By all means, follow the standard setup
instructions in the manual. One thing you MIGHT want to change is TXEQ.
For virtually all voices, the two lowest bands should be down all the
way, and for most voices, the third band should be down between 6dB and
all the way. The rest of the bands should usually be set flat, except
that those with very muddy voices may want to boost the top band 3-6
dB. I usually run compression so that I consistently see about 10dB
compression on peaks (on the K3 display).

The best way to get a final setting on TXEQ, mic gain, and compression,
is to have someone listen to you on a K3 with their IF bandwidth set to
at least 2.7 kHz. What they should hear is good clean audio, but with
very little low end (bass).

There are USA eBay sellers who now sell the CM-500 international. Purchased
a 2nd set this way recently for a spare.
I tried the Turtlebeach Z1 without much luck due to overhead rf distortion
despite ferrites fitted. (There is no rf return on the feedline).
Gave it to the kids for their computers.
The CM-500 maintains it's No 1 position for me after trying 20 different mic

Audio appears between tip and shell. As nearly as I have been able to
determine, the ring contact is not used at all. Tip also needs a
resistor (about 5K ohms) to V+. Turning on bias in the K3 does this
internally, so no resistor is needed. I had to add the resistor in an
adapter that I built to use with an FT1000MP at PJ4. The bias resistor
is also built into the mic input of most modern computer sound cards.
The CM500 works just fine in my Thinkpads.

the ring contact, it makes no difference whether the tip and ring are
connected or not - the K3 ignores the ring contact.

I am not certain about your situation, but as I understand,in the case
of the CM500, the tip is the active AF signal, and the shell is the
return (ground). The mono input of the K3 rear panel mic jack will work
just fine as long as bias is turned on. If the front panel mic input is
the choice, an adapter to a Foster plug is required and bias will have
to be turned on.

I recently bought a CM500 new and it did not include any papers at all
however the headset's wiring reflects a standard used in computer sound

 tip- mic signal
 ring- bias voltage (optional)

 Hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Cm500 and TX EQ settings

2010-12-21 Thread Jeff Hall (W6UX)
Mike,

I messed around with the TX EQ for over an hour yesterday, I've settled on
these settings for now (this sounded less nasal and not too much like I
had a pillow over my face)

*50 Hz @ -16dB*
*100 Hz @ -16dB*
*200 Hz @ -6dB*
*400 Hz @ +8dB*
800 Hz @ +0dB
1600 Hz @ +0dB
2400 Hz @ +0dB
3200 Hz @ +0dB

*Mic: 30* (for 5-7 bars with a steady a)
*Cmp: 20* (10dB on the CMP meter)

It could be that my voice just wasn't meant for radio (good thing I didn't
try to break into broadcasting!).

I left the lows way down per recommendations from Jim Brown. I'm just
trying to find a comfortable setting for ragchews. For contesting I'll
probably drop the 3 lows to -16dB and leave the rest at +0dB.

My RX EQ is flat; so I'm probably not hearing my TX EQ settings the way
others do. Got a couple reports last night that the audio was nice and
clear. Not sure if that means comfy for extended listening though.

CCing the reflector for more opinions on my new settings

[Elecraft] CM500 mic keeps cutting out midsentence

2010-12-19 Thread Jeff Hall (W6UX)
I'm having problems preventing my Yamaha CM500 boom mic from cutting out
intermittently while talking. I have the following settings on my K3:

VOX Gain: 85
Anti-vox: 0
Mic delay: 0.90
Mic Gain: 30
Cmp: 25

The mic is routed to the K3 via a microHam MKII.

I have tried moving the mic to various positions but this doesn't help. TX
cuts out every few words and this is very annoying! I have to raise my voice
above normal conversation levels to get it to turn the transmitter on. I've
play around with various values, but I'm not finding a good combination. Is
there another setting I have forgot to address? Maybe I've got a loose
connection in the mic itself? Not sure how to take this apart for
inspection.

Thanks for any any and all suggestions!

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 mic keeps cutting out midsentence

2010-12-19 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Zero VOX Gain should mean that *any* sound picked up by the mic should
initiate transmit.

The Mic delay means that when VOX does drop out, there's a 0.9 second delay
before it reasserts after the mic picks up sounds. You might try reducing
that to see if there's any effect.

Presumably you are seeing 5 to 7 bars of ALC on the bargraph indicating
normal mic audio levels into the K3.

Try connecting the mic direct without the Microham to eliminate the Microham
interface.

Try transmitting PTT to determine whether it's the VOX setup or an
intermittent in the mic wiring.

The owner's manual says MAIN:VOX GN (VOX gain) should be set to trigger at
normal speech level, but not in response to incidental noise. Start with low
settings (5-10).

I didn't write that text. I assumed it was saying to start with low settings
to ensure the VOX would trigger reliably and raise it as needed to avoid
false triggering.

Maybe a bad assumption :-)

To all,

The CM500 headset has been sold to W6NIA the first responder. Thanks for
all of the interest.

BTW, several have asked why I was selling the headset. I bought it thinking
that it would replace my old Heil BM-10 headset. In comparing both with the
K3, I found that I still preferred the Heil with the HC5 element. The Heil
seems to respond better to my voice and was easier to configure for Vox
Gain, Anti-Vox. etc. Since there was no overwhelming improvement in the
Yamaha versus the Heil, I thought I would stick with the tried and true.
Plus the BM-10 is very comfortable to wear if you do not have to block out
outside noise--which I don't in my shack. I think the Yamaha is still a
very good value especially if you do not already have a headset.

This is a tentative enquiry, as there are a few

[Elecraft] CM500 Powering from K2

2010-01-20 Thread Jim Brown
A week or so ago, KS4L asked for info on powering the CM500 from
his K2. He tried the instructions I gave, but it didn't work. Bear
in mind here that several variations of output stages are used for
the FET impedance converter in electret mics, and not all mfrs wire
them the same way to their plugs. For this reason, a single
powering method doesn't work for all electret mics. We learned this
two decades ago in the pro audio world when we started using
lavalier (clip-on) mics with wireless mic transmitters, and every
mfr of both mics and wireless systems published lots of info about
how to hook their stuff up.

The CM500 works directly with the K3, so I looked at what the K3
does for power. It's 5.6K to the tip only. The K3 makes no
connection to the ring. Randy tried that and it works fine.

So -- revised advice. From the CM500 mic plug, wire the tip to the
mic input, add a 5.6K resistor between +DC on the K2 mic jack and
the mic input. The resistor value is not critical, 4.7K to 8.2K
should work fine. There is very little current, so very small
resistors are fine. The sleeve (common) of the plug goes to common
at the mic jack.

The same wiring should work with this mic for nearly all other ham
rigs.

I would expect the CM500 to work really well with the K2. One of
the few shortcomings of the K2 is that since it was originally
designed as a QRP CW rig, the support for SSB is not a strong
point. One way this shows up is in relatively low audio gain and
not enough LF rolloff. The CM500 helps this situation, first
because it's a pretty hot mic (that is, higher than average
output level) and because the low end is rolled off internally.

There are several published mods to improve the gain of the SSB
signal chain, some of which go all the way to the RF end of the
chain. I took the simpler approach, modifying my K2s by changing a
few resistors and capacitors in the mic stages to provide rolloff
around 500 Hz and increase the gain by about 7dB. This allows the
mic to hit the compressor harder (and the rolloff prevents low
frequency sounds from hitting the compressor), making the audio
more competitive. The CM500 should provide the same improvements
but without the mods.

Re: [Elecraft] CM500 Powering from K2

2010-01-20 Thread David Y.
Jim and All,

The K3 provides the necessary bias through a menu setting. The K2 requires
an internal adjustment for whatever type microphone you are using, and how
the 8 pin connector is wired. I think all this is covered in the manual,
but the bottom line is that for electrets, a resistor is added on the
internal microphone wiring terminal which goes from the bias voltage supply
connector to whatever pin the microphone uses for the microphone lead.
Kenwood and Elecraft use pin 1 for the microphone lead, but some other
microphones may have it on a different pin on the 8 pin connector. My guess
is that internally, KS4L didn't have his K2 wired to match whatever adapter
he is using. The K2 has only one input for the microphone, and that is the
8 pin connector on the front. So, the internal microphone terminal has to
be wired accordingly so that the microphone pin selected (and the PTT, GND,
etc.) will properly correlate to however the microphone connector (8 pin) he
is using is wired. Presumably he has some sort of pigtail wired up to
convert from the 3.5 mm plug on the CM500 to an 8 pin connector which goes
to the K2.

So, it's not necessarily your instructions that were wrong--it's just how
was he going from the CM500 to the K2's front panel connector, and further,
how is that wired internally--at least I think that must have been the
problem.

Subject: [Elecraft] CM500 Powering from K2
