Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Support

2020-06-17 Thread Bill Frantz
I got good support when I had problems with my KX3. It was
slower than BC, but just as good.

BTW, my problems turned out to be: (1) Bad BNC connector on
antenna lead. (2) Messed up firmware. The KX3 utility couldn't
identify the firmware version. Reload fixed it.

Regarding the timeset function on the KX3 utility program (Windows). It
does have that. It was my oversight - I just didn't see it. Regarding the
RTC calibration function - it sounds like that may not be feasible due to
the design of the radio. Thank you all for pointing out the location of the
timeset function

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Utility error on Mac OS X High Sierra

2018-09-14 Thread David Fleming via Elecraft
Hi Christer,

You want the FTDI VCP Drivers, not the D2XX. As Jack mentioned, the FTDI
drivers are now provided by Apple and are included in all versions since OS X
10.9. You should uninstall the D2XX drivers.

Also try deleting the KX3 Utility app, and it's preferences file, and download
again from the Elecraft web site and reinstall. The preferences file is located
in the /Users/your_user_name/Library/Preferences folder on the Mac. The Library
folder is usually hidden. A quick way to get there is to click the "Go" menu in
Finder and press the "option" key. The Library folder will then appear in the
Go menu. The KX3 Utility preferences file is named "KX3UtilPrefs".

Regards,

David, W4SMT

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Utility error on Mac OS X High Sierra

2018-09-14 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Chris;

The FTDI drivers are now maintained by Apple (since Mac OS X 10.9), so there is
no need for installing the ones from FTDI. In fact you probably should
uninstall them to allow the Apple drivers to do their job.

But this isn’t an I/O issue. This looks like there is a corrupt file the
application is trying, but failing to read. There should be a crash dump that
was created when the program crashed. Open the Console app (in
/Applications/Utilities) and look in the various directories it shows for an
appropriately named crash log. That should tell us a lot more.

One question - did you try to copy a file from a Windows machine into the Mac
for this application?

Perhaps David (the app author) might want to jump in here as well. He might
have a much better feel for why we are seeing these errors.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Utility error on Mac OS X High Sierra

2018-09-14 Thread Don Wilhelm

Christer,

I don't know about the D2XX drivers. You need to have the FTDI drivers.
You can download them from https://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm.

The first step is to get your computer to enumerate the COM port
associated with the USB to serial adapter. Having that number, put it
into the KX3 Utility PORT tab and Test Communications.

Once the utility connects, everything else should go smoothly.

A rhetorical question - Why have I seen this problem recently from Mac
users? Perhaps the Mac software is no longer using the proper drivers
for the FTDI adapter.

several times, as well as numerous restarts in between.

That in advance for usable advice

Did you pull the rubber cover off the knob? There’s a hex screw under there.
It may have loosened enough for the knob to slip up on the shaft far enough to
be free wheeling. You can adjust the tension by pressing the knob closer to
the case..

Love my KX3! The ONLY thing I wish were available was a USB CAT/Audio module.
Maybe it could fit in the vhf transverter space? Or at the very least a data
port option. I've been doing QRP digital modes on trips and outings with a

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] KX3; Procedure for Setting TX CMP & TX EQ + DVR

That's exactly right. Most mics should have TXEQ set for maximum cut of
the three lower bands, with 6 dB cut of the fourth band, everything else
set "flat" -- that is, no boost or cut. A few mics benefit from a few dB
of boost in the higher two bands.

Once TXEQ is set, then set MicGain per the manual, then adjust CMP so
that you see no more than 10 dB of compression on peaks of TX audio.

This will optimize audio for best communications quality, and for
performance under weak signal conditions, boosting your "talk power" by
nearly 13 dB. The recommended low-cut is typically good for 2-3 dB --
that's how much power is wasted by low frequency components of voice,
which make no contribution to intelligibility.

[Elecraft] Elecraft] KX3; Procedure for Setting TX CMP & TX EQ + DVR

2016-01-24 Thread jkiracofe51

I desire to utilize both CMP and TX EQ in SSB transmissions on a KX3.

In the KX3 Owners Manual, there are well defined procedures for
setting Mic Gain, CMP and TX EQ, but it leaves doubt as to which to
set first as Mic Gain and CMP are grouped together with TX EQ
described several pages later. This would imply TX EQ would be set
last.

As TX EQ could effect overall audio amplitude peaks, it would seem
that TX EQ should be set first then adjust Mic Gain for proper levels,
then set CMP.

What is the Elecraft recommended procedure / order for setting these
three adjustments ?

My next questions involves storing and playing messages on the DVR
where CMP and TX EQ are desired.

With Mic Gain, CMP and TX EQ set as desired for a CQ message for
example, would the DVR store the message as processed with CMP and TX
EQ active ?

Assume I leave the Mic Gain, CMP and TX EQ at the same setting when
the DVR CQ message was stored … When playing the message back on
the air, would the message be processed twice (CMP & TX EQ), once
during recording and once during playback or just once ?

Feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] KX3 - easiest way to panadapt?

2015-10-19 Thread Chris Rutkowski
It is an alternative to lp-bridge.

And you're right: Such programs are not "needed" for the panadapter per se.
Rather, they are needed to integrate multiple pieces of software sharing a
single serial port on your computer, which is hooked to the KX3 (or other rig).
And that is a very common requirement.

for example, I almost always open my Amateur Contact Log and NaP3 for every-day
operating.

For another example, during a recent contest I had NaP3, cw-skimmer, and N1MM+
open at once.

All use the same serial port to control the rig.

Hi Ed.

When the other fellow (sorry, just went blank on his name) said u need a good
sound card, he was right, mostly. The better the soundcard the better nap3 will
work. However, when I first started - say, the first 3 months or so, I used the
soundcard built into my Old Dell D620 laptop (W7), and it worked plenty well
enough to get me hooked on panadapters. Biggest limitation is that the maximum
bandwidth with the old dell (based on the bandwidth of the soundcard) was 48khz
- where's my pricy external soundcard allows 192Khz. . That may sound like a
big deal, but truth be known since im a cw and rtty guy, I don't find much more
than 50khz to be all that useful. Point is, as long as whatever MIC input u use
is STEREO, you can use it and gain experience with it.

Should mention that according to the author of NaP3, comocon works with NaP3.
In fact he stated he prefers it because it loads faster.

Detail: if u use lp-bridge, be sure to put NaP3 on the "set port."

As for what's easiest and best... It depends on you. I own Win4k3. It is an
interesting program, that brings lots to the table. However, for me, the only
piece that was (is) of real interest is the panadaptor. You can download a
trial and test for yourself. Personally, so far, I strongly prefer NaP3 as a
panadapter.. But of course, there is no right or wrong regarding taste.

what do I like? I LOVE that NaP3 can put spots right on the spectrum. Worth its
weight in gold. I also love working Rtty and CW: positioning yourself in a
pileup is incredibly easy. I just got a feature working called the data/text
window, which displays decoded data or CW in one window and allows u to type in
the other.

For now, I count nap3 as second to my rig and antenna in importance to my
enjoyment of the hobby.

After all, I can still use a paper log if I have to...

Hi Ed,
Com0com provides a virtual comport pair that acts like a null modem cable.
It can be used to connect two software packages together as long as one has
the necessary logic such as Win4k3Suite.
Win4k3 has a built in router that listens on special ports for commands from
other software and then sends them to the radio or returns data. It connect
to the other software through com0com. It effectively provides lpbridge
functionality. Thus in Win4k3, you can hook up nap3 to work through win4k3
and it thinks its connected to a k3.
Hope this explains it. You can find a full explanation in the win4k3 manual.

Hi Ed.

When the other fellow (sorry, just went blank on his name) said u need a
good sound card, he was right, mostly. The better the soundcard the better
nap3 will work. However, when I first started - say, the first 3 months or
so, I used the soundcard built into my Old Dell D620 laptop (W7), and it
worked plenty well enough to get me hooked on panadapters. Biggest
limitation is that the maximum bandwidth with the old dell (based on the
bandwidth of the soundcard) was 48khz - where's my pricy external soundcard
allows 192Khz. . That may sound like a big deal, but truth be known since
im a cw and rtty guy, I don't find much more than 50khz to be all that
useful. Point is, as long as whatever MIC input u use is STEREO, you can
use it and gain experience with it.

Should mention that according to the author of NaP3, comocon works with
NaP3. In fact he stated he prefers it because it loads faster.

Detail: if u use lp-bridge, be sure to put NaP3 on the "set port."

As for what's easiest and best... It depends on you. I own Win4k3. It is an
interesting program, that brings lots to the table. However, for me, the
only piece that was (is) of real interest is the panadaptor. You can
download a trial and test for yourself. Personally, so far, I strongly
prefer NaP3 as a panadapter.. But of course, there is no right or wrong
regarding taste.

what do I like? I LOVE that NaP3 can put spots right on the spectrum. Worth
its weight in gold. I also love working Rtty and CW: positioning yourself in
a pileup is incredibly easy. I just got a feature working called the
data/text window, which displays decoded data or CW in one window and allows
u to type in the other.

For now, I count nap3 as second to my rig and antenna in importance to my
enjoyment of the hobby.

After all, I can still use a paper log if I have to...

I have a KX3. I would like to use my computer and laptop ( Windows 7 and
Windows 8 ) to display a spectrum from my KX3, using the RX I/Q output.
What is the simplest and recommended easiest way to do this? NaP3 ?

I use my KX3 mostly on digital modes with SignaLink USB interface and
sometimes with just the laptop soundcard interface.

There's probably not an easy way to fix it -- it's established by how
the radio is built, and changing would be major surgery. These are
things that Elecraft has to fix.

What we CAN do is "put band-aids" on the problem. Several basic measures.

1) Bond chassis-to-chassis of all interconnected equipment, bond from
that equipment to all grounds, and carefully bond all grounds together.

2) Place ferrite common mode chokes on cables plugged into connectors
with Pin One Problems, tuning the chokes to the frequencies where
interference is a concern. Follow guidelines in k9yc.com/RFI-Ham.pdf

3) Keep cables plugged into connectors with Pin One Problems as short as
practical.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 IQ out and spectral display pograms

2014-12-22 Thread Chris Tate - N6WM
Ok. This issue has been resolved.

First I want to send a huge Thanks to K9YC for his body of work on RFI, and
bonding , as well as W3FPR for setting me straight where I should be reading on
the pan adapter and soundcard isses. I spent some quality time, along with an
offline email (thanks Jim) and ended up bonding all equipment, laptop, KX3,
basically any chassis. Since this is an expedition kit, I took his advice and
built pigtails with power pole connectors connected to each chassis in the
setup. This allows quick assembly and breakdown of the bonding system. After
doing this First result.. all audible rfi noise in headphones.. gone. Voltage
between devices seems to have been balanced. Spot on Jim. This was great, and
it gets better.

The noise I was seeing on waterfalls seems to be nastiness coming from the USB
system on the laptop. I did some snooping with an HT to narrow this down. I
applied a ferrite choke onto the USB cable along with ensuring a very secure
connection to the USB port.. fired up the system and bingo.. 98% of the
displayed noise on the waterfall is gone. (I am not sure if the Choke worked or
if it was a loose connection, or both).

Lessons learned..
1. Read the Elecraft Manual. Carefully.
2. Read K9YC presentation and data Carefully. Raise your hands and say..
"You are the go to man for this Reverend Jim!"
3. Read telepost soundcard page. Read it again. Thanks again Don.. They have
really added a lot of info since the last time I looked there.
4. Reach out to the authors as needed to reassure yourself what you read is
true :-). (I guess it's a ham thing.. or maybe an N6WM thing hi hi)

Net result (with all these little challenges solved) is I have the best
sounding fully functional compact expedition/portable contestpedition setup
that can fit in a pelican case(in my opinion.)

Consists of KX3/KXPA100 Thinkpad notebook, mini speakers, small power supply,
Xonar sound card, footswitch(tested and working) , headphones(CM500 tx audio
dialed in), budipole and battery for the really remote stuff. With the IQ out
into the Xonar , I have skimmer, N1MM Plus, and even power SDR running in a
stable state giving a full waterfall display of my choosing. In fact I have
them running all simultaneously. The entire setup works, and works well.

Now I can pack all this stuff up and get back to planning its first travel
date, and using my K3/0 connected to my "not on expedition" K-line at the
hilltop station.

Thanks K9YC and everyone else who responded.. this was a fun project... and of
course keep cranking out these super cool products Eric and Wayne!

~Chris

Yes, that's the problem. The power supply in the computer probably has
bypass/filter capacitors between the line and the chassis. So with an
unbalanced connection to the KX3, there will be 60 Hz (and harmonics) AC
current flowing in the cable shields. Even a fraction of a millivolt
voltage drop in the shield is enough to cause a visible 60 Hz spur on
the panadapter display.

The voltage drop can be reduced by connecting a short, low-resistance
wire between the two chassis. I suggested making the connection on the
computer end to the audio connector shells to make sure you're
connecting to the ground reference of the sound card, which might be
different from other points on the chassis. That may have been bad
advice - I'm not an expert on the construction of a typical PC chassis.

But I think isolation transformers would be an even better solution.
That should completely eliminate hum caused by different voltages on the
two chassis.

The PX3 uses differential sensing on the I/Q inputs instead of isolation
transformers. In effect, the PX3 ground reference is the KX3 chassis,
rather than the PX3 chassis. That way, even if there is a 60 Hz voltage
difference between the two chassis, it won't cause interference.

> This is smelling VERY much like Pin One Problems.

For those who aren't familiar with the term, the so-called "pin one"
problem is when the ground pin on a connector is not connected directly
to the chassis but rather via a wire, PC board, etc. I believe the name
comes from audio XLR connectors, which use pin 1 as the ground.

The pin one problem normally shows up at RF frequencies because of the
inductance of the internal ground connection. But the issue under
discussion is 60 Hz interference, so I doubt that that's the problem.

2014-12-20 Thread Tom Blahovici
Hi
I have worked with someone who had a similar issue. In his case the iq signals
were randomly swapping and that of course can ruin any balance that has been
set. I have read recently of others on the kx3 yahoo group which report the
same thing.
Extensive troubleshooting was done. It was not the software package in use. It
did this with all.
In the case where I helped out the only thing that solved it was using a
different computer. The problem never returned. We did determine though that
high processor usage eliminated the problem. That's right,  go figure.
It's a mystery.

I would check the splitter cable, or use another one. I have had numerous
times when the audio cable was not up to snuff (in different ways), and the
results are I/Q imbalance issues. I've even had Y adaptors from Radio Shack
that were completely miswired. You would think that simple cables could be
relied upon, but I've seen otherwise.

Good luck.

2014-12-20 Thread Chris Tate - N6WM
Thanks Barry.. I am not having rig control issues and thus dont need to use
LP-bridge at this time.

This seems specific to the IQ audio coming out of the IQ out of the KX3. I
have experienced this on 2 KX3's and multiple sound card/computer combinations
so I suspect an internal setting or something I have not found documented or
missed. Since the PX3 is in existence.. there must be some setting/combo that
fixes the spectral display as it is fed to a high end sound card.

and again I did not have this issue with the N8LP pan or the IF out of my K3's.
This is specific to the IQ out feature of the K X 3.

If you read further you will find I did solve some of the computer RFI with a
GLI.. in particular from radio shack. This seems to be required hardware at
this point and needs to be put in line with the IQ out cable provided by
elecraft. With it in line it is no longer a problem.

Thanks for the tip on Win4k3 Ill give that one a shot.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 IQ out and spectral display pograms

2014-12-20 Thread Barry LaZar

Chris.
I have switched over to Win4K3. It's a total package with spectrum
display, IP connection to HRD, works well with CWskimmer, and now there
is spotting and a log program, albeit the logging function is still
being worked on. It seems to run much more smoothly than NaP3 with LP
Bridge.

From reading your post I suggest that you get a Radio Shack ground
loop isolator. It seemed to fix a number of things in my set up and they
are inexpensive. One my overcome some, if not all, your issues.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3: Dual Watch or Split - newbie Dave needs help!

2014-03-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dave,

I don't know how you are hearing both VFO frequencies at the same time
with only SPLIT engaged (unless you have Dual Watch turned on at the
same time).

With split (and not Dual Watch), you have VFO A in both ears. If you
use the REV button, you can hear on the VFO B frequency (again in both
ears). You do not hear both at once. You can swap the VFOs with the
A/B button.
Without SPLIT, transmit will be on VFO A, but with SPLIT turned on,
transmit will be on VFO B - observe the direction the arrow is pointing
on the display to see which VFO will be used for transmit.

If you turn on Dual Watch, you will hear both VFOs as long as they are
not separated by more than +/- 15 kHz. You may or may not want to use
SPLIT in conjunction with Dual Watch - usually you would want to use
SPLIT, but not necessarily - say you want to use VFO B to scour around
the band area while carrying on a non-split QSO on the VFO A frequency.

As I understand it, for:
SPLIT
Split has a wider range of frequencies to utilize beyond the +/- 15kHz

VFO A (DX station) on the left and VFO B (calling station, me) on the right

DUAL WATCH
VFO A (DX station) on the right and VFO B (me) on the left headphone.
Easier to tune up and down with the big tuning knob as I try to catch the DX
station (instead of the little tuning knob).

I must be missing something. I’ve used Split quite successfully and tried Dual
Watch but they just seem to be the reverse of each other. When running a KX3, I
need all the help when attempting to break through the pileups (especially here

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3: Dual Watch or Split - newbie Dave needs help!

2014-03-22 Thread Jim Bennett
Hi Dave -

When I'm trying to get a DX station that is working split or during the QRP Fox
hunts, I use Dual Watch and Split together. Before engaging, I tune in the
"target" station to suit my hearing pitch preference, then I press A-->B twice
to get both VFO's equal. Next I hit Split and then Dual Watch. Using the small
tuning knob, I tune VFO-B up to a point where I want to transmit - either on
the frequency of the guy currently being worked, or into a "hole" where there
are few strong signals present. I can hear the DX / Fox station in my left
headphone and the "pack" in the right ear. I also use NaP3 as a visual display
to actually "see" where the pack is operating - helps a lot!

Re: [Elecraft] [ELECRAFT] KX3 Accuracy of Clock

2013-12-04 Thread robertsm...@vom.com

Doing a little research I found a 32.768KHz surface mount crystal in the Newark
Catalog that might be used to replace the crystal in the Battery/Clock module.
It
is an Epson MC306 and sells for $1.12 in the Newark catalog.

The accuracy is 20PPM, which equates to about 10 minutes/year. Since the cost
is
so low, you could buy 20 or so of them, build up a gate oscillator with the
same
30pf capacitors as are used in the module and use a frequency counter to pick
one
with the best initial accuracy. The drift of the devices is only 3ppm which
equates to 3.5 minutes/year.

Not sure if this one fits on the module, but I'm sure there are equivalent
parts
that would.

[Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Clock Accuracy

2013-12-03 Thread Jerry
GM All,

The link provided by Don W4FPR is a very good link. It does have some
cautions that should be observed. Main one is that if you do not select the
"Decline" button (which appears to be to the eye as 'not enabled", but
really is enabled), you could very well download (with your implicit
permission) some applications that might be troublesome for you. Nothing
bad, but possibly troublesome.

May I suggest going directly to the source of the Atomic Clock Sync program
at http://www.worldtimeserver.com/ and download the program. I have used
this program for many, many years with good results. In the past, I have
found that sometimes the Atomic Clock Sync would sometimes stop working (XP
days) and would have to be restarted. Today, the program has provisions to
repair "problems" that it encounters. I haven't had to use it since I have
downloaded the current program.

Best regards,

Jerry, W1IE

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Internal NiMH Power Supply Voltage after Charge

2013-04-14 Thread Bob
Acutally NiMH cells have a Coulometric Efficiency of 66%, which means you
need put 1/0.66 = 1.51 (or 151%) of the charge back into the
battery.(assuming it is fully discharged).

If your target cell were 2700 mAH, and it was dead, then you need to put
2700/0.66 = 4090 mAH. At 200 mA per hour, that would take about 21 hours.

I have always heard that the rule of thumb for charging a
depleted NiCd of NiMh battery is to charge it to 140% of its
rated capacity. If you are charging 2700 mAHr cells at 200 mA,
then you will need to charge them for 18.9 hours.

Subject: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Internal NiMH Power Supply Voltage after
Charge

Hello group:

Last night I installed new NiMH batteries (the Powerex 2700 MaH variety)
into my week old KX3 for the first time and set them for a 12 hour charge.
After the charge was complete, the KX3 PS display indicates a power supply
voltage of only 10.8 volts, which drops to well below 10.0 volts on
transmit.

I'm sure that this is lower than it should be. I haven't re-opened the case
to check for bad or ill-fitting cells yet as it is a little bit of a tricky
open.

So I guess the questions are these.
1) What voltage have other group members experienced with the internal NiMH
PS after charge?
2) What charge duration are other folks using?

Thanks in advance for your responses!
Steve, N5SKH

P.S. What a great radio...

Steve

I have several sets of batteries for my KX3 and I have 2 sets like yours. I
have found from experience the first time they (or any) need to be
conditioned in an outboard charger/conditioner it takes a full 14 hrs. to
cycle the charge discharge.

Then they go into my KX3 full power and the charger takes care of them just
fine on a 12 hr. charge most of the time. After 10 charge/discharge cycles I
remove them from the radio and recondition them again so they can be brought
back up to where they can hold a full charge.

Those are not the low-discharge variety, so are likely totally
discharged on arrival. 2700/200 is 13.5h, and you need to charge more
than rated capacity because charging is not 100% efficient. So for
2700, 16h is definitely warranted, and I might recommend 18h on first
charge, but you can't set that. I'd give it another 4h, maybe 6h
(humuan in the loop timing control from 8h :-). Undercharging is scary
because it can lead to cell imbalance and you really don't want to
reverse bias NiMH batteries.

10.8V/8cells is 1.35 V/cell. For a NiMH under any load, that's very
much charged.

10.0V is 1.25 V/cell. At rest, that indicates a discharged cell, but
under any significant load there is no problem.

Set your BAT MIN to lower; probably 8.4V makes sense (1.05 V/cell, which
you may well see under transmit loads), or even 8.2V.

When doing test discharges on NiMH cells, I use 200 mA and discharge to
0.9V, using a MAHA C9000. That corresponds to 7.2V for 8 cells. I
recommend getting one of those chargers and measuring your cell's
capacities before putting them into service and then yearly or if they
seem to be acting up.

I have been happy with the powerex/maha batteries, but have found that
the regular (non-Imedion) ones self discharge quite rapidly.

Yes, I love Rumlog and Rumped on the Mac. I once had MLDX but wasn't my cup
of tea. Rumlog works very well with a KX3. Use K2/K3 as the TRX. If you use
the tranceiver control panel some of the commands such as A/B, A=B do not
work on the KX3

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 and Mac

2012-08-13 Thread Bill Frantz
I belong in the itinerant casual operating category. I operate
from two main QTHs, in California and in New Hampshire. In
addition, I also operate mobile HF and backpack portable HF. I
am quite well served by RUMlog for these operations except for
location support. I used RUMped for field day and was quite
satisfied. I could easily transfer the QSOs to a new RUMlog log
for LotW upload. However RUMped also dosen't have any kind of
location support, and I was operating mobil (with my wife,
KI6DSLX driving). So I lied and said all the QSOs were from
Lewisburg WV when some of them were from a few miles away.

I am a big fan of paper QSLs, considering them an art form.
RUMlog's paper QSL support is minimal but useful, and being able
to log the ones received can be quite useful.

I have not heard of any logging program, Mac, Linux, or Windows,
which has decent location support. I think, but am not sure,
that with a GPS location, it is straight forward to look up all
the other information that hams seem to want, including: State,
IOTW, CQ zone (whatever that is used for), county, city, etc. So
it would be nice to get them all automatically with a connected
GPS, and automatically add it to LotW and eQSL (when they can
support it) uploads. Having them available to automatically
print for paper QSLs would be nice too. Note that the internet
may not be available during the QSO, but it is reasonable to
assume it is available during uploads.

Cheers - Bill, AE6JV

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 and Mac

2012-08-13 Thread Rick Prather
The "best" choice for logging programs is very much dependent on your operating
style.

For the casual Op MLDX is slick, pretty and well done, it's also expensive.

For the DX'er I find that RUMlog is the clear choice. I think it does a great
job of filtering packet posts from multiple telnet sources and color coding
Country/Band/Mode info to quickly assess if a spot needs to be worked or
confirmed. The matrix display for each DXCC is exceptional and quickly lets
you know what you need to know.

RL's integration with LoTW is a one click upload and it is downloaded
automatically every time you open the program if you chose.

RL also does a great job of keeping track of QSL's by paper, LoTw and even eQSL
separately. The summary reports for each type of QSL are great too.

I wind up running RL as my primary day to day logger and control program (it
also has a great control panel for the K3 and presumably the KX3.)

Sometimes I'll also rum MLDX along side it since I have already invested about
$130 over the years in it. I use it mainly to do quick lookups on a call.

BTW, I also still run DXKeeper under XP in Parallels about once a week or so to
crunch log results but it's sure nice to shut it down and go back to OSX only.

Since you mention RUMped, I also use it mostly for RTTY contests.

Enjoy you iMac. I think I'll be replacing my 24" with the 27" soon.

Mike -

I use RUMLog on my K3 and like it /*much*/ better than MacLoggerDX, and
in my opinion support is better. The only thing I'd like to see in
RUMLog is rotor control. It's rumored Tom is working on it.

The KX3 is not in RUMLog's transceiver list. I believe the KX3 shares a
lot of the control set with the K3 (Wayne. Dick?). At the price of
RUMLog, it would be worth a try.

I tried Rumlog/Rumped and wasn't overly thrilled. I use MacLoggerDX for my
regular daily logging; I use the N1MM logger with Parallels in a Windows7 VM
for contest logging if I am playing a contest MLDX doesn't support since it
directly supports a lot more contests. MLDX makes a good "light" contest logger
and will work with most contests if you aren't interested in a running score or
some of the other "neat" features of the dedicated contest loggers. Don Agro
(MLDX's author) provides wonderful support and there is a very active Yahoo
group dedicated to it.

Hi,

Forgot to also mention that the KX3 preliminary manual only refers to a
windows program (http://www.hdsdr.de) for SDR (which pretty much leaves
mac and linux users in the dark; it might work under the wine
emulator?). There are multiplatform applications, such as python based
quisk, that will do the very basic stuff. Perhaps it would be a good
idea to try to promote multiplatform solutions (or at least mention
about their existence)?

Jussi Eloranta

ps. Is there another way to provide feedback on the KX3 manual rather
than posting everything on the mailing list?
I am pretty sure that most people don't want to see these posts...

2012-03-17 Thread Jussi Eloranta
Hi,

I think the manual should list the exact pin outs for each connector in KX3
- just like given for the microphone input in the current version of the
manual. Many of these might be obvious to experienced hams (like the CW key
input) but may not be so to new comers. Anyway, I have question related to
the I/Q output - should I use a straight stereo cable (gnd to gnd, left to
left, right to right) for going from I/Q to the line in in my PC sound card?
(the exact pin outs for all the connectors should be preferably listed in an
appendix as a table for fast access).

Thanks,

Jussi Eloranta

I apologize, but that information is incorrect. The KXSER uses a sealed

There are a number of simple RS-232 male-female break our boards onthe
net. You might want to try one of those. Or just make a simple short
RS-232 cable that breaks out the desired lines.

Hi Jim,

you are correct about lower voltages on "modern" computers. Nevertheless the
specs are higher and even 10-12 V is too much for most microprocessor pins.
And I've seen a lot of ham shacks where *old* computers are still in use
that have real serial ports with correct levels (as per sprecs). So to be on
the save side we should not suggest people to apply RS-232 line levels
directly even though it *might* work with some computers. ;-))

Not in recent recorded history! So-called RS-232 interfaces started
getting cheapened many years ago (before they went away and were
replaced by USB), and one of the first things to go was output voltage
swing. Think about the voltages available in a laptop, for example. I'd
be very surprised to see more than 10-12V on anything other than an
industrial RS232 interface, and less on most laptops.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Owner's Manual now available

2012-03-06 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ed,

For digital modes, you must provide audio input to the microphone
connector - just use a stereo plug and connect the audio to the tip -
the PTT is on the ring, so you only need 3 plugs, one for the headphone
jack and one for the microphone jack, and the other for the ACC1 (data)
jack.

It might prove useful to construct a variation the interface Skip Teller
KH6TY published in QST for July 2010. The "variation" is to add wires
from RXD and TXD (plus Signal Ground) to a 3.5mm stereo plug
(effectively adding your own version of the KX3SER cable) I believe it
provides exactly what is needed for the PTT Data mode operation - plug
it into a real serial port or the K3USB cable (or similar USB to serial
cable).

At least, that is how I would do it if I wanted everything to be in one
package.

Not just RS-232 either. A few years ago I had two band decoders, and
they would work fine on one LPT port but not on the other. Turned out
the questionable port was only delivering 3.3 volts as logic 1, not
quite enough for the band decoder.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Owner's Manual now available

2012-03-06 Thread W7GJ, Lance
Hi Ed,

Yes, you can use your K3USB cable to gain access to the RTS line, but you would
have
to select the optional KXSER cable (no charge exchange) to mate it to your KX3.

Apparently there is space inside that DB9 connector to mount a small resistor
and
2N to change the HIGH RTS line to a short that can be applied to the PTT
ring in
the mic connector.

The GPIO approach will require a firmware change, and would require you to
break out
the RTS line anyway, and then splice into another connector tooI am sure
there
are others interested in doing this. I THINK this might be the easiest way,
although
perhaps it would be possible to add another stereo jack next to the mic
connector to
short for PTTwill have to see what the space issues look like inside the
unit.

2012-03-06 Thread Edward R. Cole
Following this thread with Lance, carefully. I'm not sure I will run
eme with my KX3 but will probably run WSJT on the 600m band. My 600m
transmitter uses a P&B dc relay for TR so need more delay. Can I not
use my K3USB cable and tap out the RTS line (DB9 pin7) to control the
GPIO line to accomplish PTT with sw control? Will use of the GPIO
line require special changes to the firmware to accomplish PTT?

Most soundcard sw utilize RTS for PTT, so this issue is not limited
to just WSJT.

Lance,

You should not need another USB cable, but use the KXSER cable (and a
USB to serial adapter if needed) which will give you access to the RTS
and DTR pins of the serial port.
Yes, you will have to add the wires to the existing KXSER cable.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I called Elecraft Tech Support and they
confirmed
that the optional "KXSER" cable had a DB9 back that could be opened, providing
access
to all the serial lines that came in on my USB to serial converter cable (I
will just
use the one that I have been using on K3 when operating portable). I will then
install a transistor switch in that connector and add a line out of that DB9
connector to the mic jack to key the rig ;-)

So, I added that change to my KX3 order and I THINK the problem is solved! I
just
need to order one of those special mic plugs and wire it with jacks for the mic
and
PTT and I am in business! TNX for all the help! VY

We will have voltage/current limiting on this pin, but I was thinking
TTL level RTS. We'll be putting a spec on the port pins.

Since your concern is really for switching the amplifier and possibly
an LNA, you may be able to "split the baby". Consider using the KX3
serial cable and a USB to serial converter. That way you can use RTS
to switch the amplifier (split out a simple single transistor driver
for the amplifier) and allow the WSJT software to delay audio by +/-
200 ms with the KX3 in VOX.

You could even build the transistor driver into the EME amp (PTT on
 > +3V) so the only "extra" item needed would be a simple splitter cable
to connect between the USB converter and KX3SER cable.

The same solution would be applicable to *any* transceiver with a TTL
or RS-232 control interface and old laptops with a traditional serial
port. Allow the transceiver to switch based on "data VOX" and have
the software provide "advance PTT". If memory serves, the specs call
for JT-65 to assert PTT on the minute with tones starting one second
past the minute which by its very nature provides a 1 second "advance
PTT".

2012-03-05 Thread W7GJ, Lance
Hi Jim,

TNX for your suggestions on the Harris amps on my website. I agree that they
should
have some good switching on them, and have been suggesting that people use good
coaxial relays, preferably those with an extra set of protection contats, so
the amp
is not turned on until the coax relays has switched. They are great amps,
though,
and have fantastic protection circuitry built into them, so they are really
hard to
damage ;-) And it is nice to be able to get around a kw on 6m with only 10w of
drive!

However, my discussions recently have not been involving those big amps at
all...rather my current application is to use the KX3 on overseas 6m EME
Dxpeditions
in conjunction with the M2 6M-1000 12 pound 6m amplifier. I greatly appreciate
all
the guidance, and I will plan to build up some sort of arrangement to key the
KX3 via
the PTT line out of the MIC connector.

Hi Lance,

you should *NOT* apply RTS directly to the GPIO pin! RS-232 levels go up
into the +/-20 volts region per specs and that would probably damage the
microcontroller in the KX3 (at least this pin). Maybe Wayne can shine some
light onto if GPIO is directly connected to the MC and thus can only accept
5 V or if there is something else in-between.

Please don't be mistaken by that you can apply RTS directly at the K3
because that has a level converter built in active also for RTS/DTR pins
while the KX3 probably won't (see above).

So an "interface" is needed anyway (1-transistor-interface), that's why I
originally asked what the advantage of using GPIO for PTT would be (besides
maybe easier cabling).

A better solution might be to simply use VOX on DATA A then also for WSJT
(just for easier cabling, I would still prefer "real" PTT on the mic
connector) and use GPIO's TX-INHIBIT functionality together with a smallish
sequencer (could be built into the amp, too). Then you could be sure that
the radio is not putting out any HF before all other equipment (PA, pre-amp,
etc.) has switched and the TX-INH is unlocked. I am doing exactly that on my
K3 ... and others, too. ;-))

Lance,

I would not think you could apply raw RS-232 levels (up to +/- 25 volts)
to any input of the KX3 other than those designed to accept those levels
- and that certainly would apply to the GPIO. I would expect it to
accept a maximum of 5 volts and a low level of zero volts - so you need
the one-transistor circuit no matter which way you plug it.

I understand, and like many others, greatly appreciate your initiative
to recycle those high quality ch 2 power amps for 6M. BUT -- designing
and building some sort of bulletproof T/R antenna switching ought to be
part of that conversion. It doesn't take much to rig a suitable vacuum

While it's great to see more features built into Elecraft rigs, we must
realize that they are not free (at a minimum there is engineering time
to do the programming and document it), some can be costly or
impractical, depending on the hardware, and when they are costly, it is
not reasonable to burden all KX3 owners with things that can (and

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 Owner's Manual now available(*preliminary*)

2012-03-05 Thread W7GJ, Lance
Hello Olli,

The advantage is that I could possibly pull out the RTS line from my one RS232
cable
to the computer, and simply add it to the amplifier PTT plug in ACC2. I would
not
have to build a transistor switch to directly trigger the PTT line, which would
have
to be broken out from the custom MIC plug.

There appear to be several different ways that I could force the KX3 into XMIT
from
the computer's RTS serial port line, and I will have to try to figure out the
simplest way, with the KX3-compatible plugs that I can find. I THINK I could
plug a
standard right/left audio splitter into the MIC jack, and plug a mono mic plug
from
my headset or the computer LINE OUT into one side and a PTT signal (from a
switching
transistor activated by the RTS line, or from a footswitch) into the other side.

I think I may have to wait until the KX3 arrives, and I can actually see how
the
connectors (and computer cables) work with it, before I can make a final
decision on
what course to take. Like the K3, one of the big advantages seems to be that
it is
very flexible radio, and there is probably some way to make it do just about
everything you need ;-)

Lance, what's the advantage of using the KX3's GPIO pin for PTT over the PTT
