[Elecraft] KAT500

2012-07-21 Thread KM4VX
Although the latest information on the Elecraft Web Site remains a KAT500
shipping date of August 15 (2012?) there is yet no photo of the KAT500 on
the site- similar to the way other products are advertised by Elecraft- and
no KAT500 manual for us to preview--their usual pre-production practice.
Elecraft has had nothing to say about the KAT500 since March, except to
repeat in April their plans to launch the KAT500 this summer. I look forward
to an update in the near future. Many thanks. KM4VX

2012-10-12 Thread David Poplewski
I am really excited. I received a call late this afternoon from Elecraft
that my long awaited KAT500 antenna tuner is shipping today from
California. I checked my email tonight and I also see a shipping
confirmation from UPS that a package was indeed logged from Elecraft. It
will be exciting next week when the big brown truck rolls in the driveway.
I'm actually looking forward to re-wiring the ham shack and getting the
tuner in service. I'm sure I'm not the only one notified today, but I'm
really excited they called me. Hat's off to you Elecraft for your fine
customer service. You do yourselves proud. Congratulations to the team

[Elecraft] KAT500

2012-11-01 Thread KD8NNU
After reading the manual that was scanned in I noticed that when the unit is
turned off that the antenna ports are not shorted together.

For my qth I like to shut down my station with my antenna switch the off
position shorting my antennas to ground. This in my mind is a good thing as it
helps drain static from the system. So I am thinking that if I get a KAT500
then I would have to add more switches one for each antenna.

Am I correct in my thinking or are there better ideas how to get this
accomplished. Extra switches need extra coax which is more cost and a wee bit
more loss.

Any thoughts, comments.

Thanks
Don

2012-11-16 Thread Barry Simpson
Further to my earlier posting, I have now got the new KAT500 connected to
the K3 and KPA500 as per the instructions.

Of course it did not work at all at first. However, I just got back from
dinner out with the XYL, checked again and found that I had reversed the
antenna/transceiver cables !!

Now corrected and seems to be working perfectly.

It also does not seem to introduce any loss whatsoever, just like the K3
built in ATU. I don't know how Elecraft do that as both my Kenwood rigs
have significant losses in their ATU's as did my previous Yaesu.

The mojo is still working.

2012-11-25 Thread Fred Jensen

I guess the list is back.

KAT500 question: Mine needs one dit to get to the new band. I have the
15-conductor cables between the K3, KAT500, and KPA500. I thought
everybody knew what band I was on automagically. FWIW: I almost always
change bands on the KPA500 ... I thought all the rest followed.

This is not a "problem," I always send more than one dit answering a
station, just curious.

2015-05-26 Thread Larry Snyder
Good Morning

I have a KAT500 with a vertical on ANT 1 and a Hex on ANT 3.

I go to 20 meters with Auto flashing an put the radio in AM and the KAT500
tunes and finds a good SWR - all is fine. Then I play around with other
frequencies and then come back and for some reason the KAT500 appears to not
remember the tuning parameters and then retunes again for the same frequency
on the same antenna. Why is this?? This happens frequently (i.e.: not
remembering the settings and going into retune).

Also, the SWR meter on the K3 is always blank (i.e.: no bars) while on the
K3 and KPA500 I see the SWR at 1.5??

[Elecraft] KAT500

2011-11-15 Thread Roy Morris
I believe the K3/KAT500 will be similar to the K2/KAT100-1. Surely the
KAT500 will have a retractable bale similar to the KAT100-1. This will mean
the K Line components will not line up at the same height. I believe Wayne
means for the tuner to be placed UNDER the K3 or KPA500. I would not place
the KAT500 on top of the KPA500 restricting air flow to the amp, nor would I
place it on top of the K3 restricting the sound from the K3 speaker (if the
internal speaker is used). Does the KAT500 have a bale? Roy Morris W4WFB

The KAT500 matches the K3/KPA500 footprint, but it's very thin (1.5"
-- same height as the W2 wattmeter). You'll be able to place the
KAT500 on top of either the K3 or KPA500.

If so, I'll abandon my plan to build a band-switching interface using the Top

Eric,

I have some questions:

1. What is the total shipping weight for a KPA500 kit? (for shipping cost
estimation.)
The transformer is probably the main contributor.

2. Do you have any plans to ship a kit that can be sourced by a customer
power supply or is the built PS
tightly integrated regarding supervision, regulation etc.

[Elecraft] KAT500

2011-04-08 Thread Mike Fatchett
There has been much speculation and suggestions for this new product. I
am sure the Elecraft team will produce another fine product. I doubt
they would be working on this product unless they felt that they could
improve upon what is already available on the market. I have a couple
of LDG tuners and they work very well. The issue I have with their
tuners is that the power handling capabilities are halved on 6m.

One of the design requirements for the new KAT500 is that it will handle
the full output of the KPA500 on all bands.

I would like to see multiple antenna inputs for the tuner and a way to
specify which one is used on which band.

A number of people have suggested a weatherproof unit for placement
directly at the antenna feed. In this setup extra inputs might be
wasted unless you ran your other feeds over to the tuner. Talking to
the remote tuner without extra control lines might be a challenge.

A wattmeter and SWR meter should probably be part of the unit.

I will be curious to see what the enclosure will be as I hope to take
one to J6 in November. I am not sure that the tuner could be made much
smaller than the K3 enclosure. Using the same enclosure is cheaper in
the long run and matches the the K-line ascetically.

It is refreshing to be able to exchange ideas so freely with the
manufacturer and actually receive prompt feedback!

Thanks Elecraft! It is a pleasure doing business with you and it is a
pleasure using your products!

2021-02-06 Thread ws6x.ars
Hello Again,

Sorry for being so “mysterious” yesterday. Several of you have written, some
with helpful suggestions, but many being curious about what I thought was
“suspicious” about the KAT500 transaction.

Briefly, I have learned when you place a “WTB:” ad on QTH.com, you often
encounter one of the lurking scammers, who will offer to sell you the item you
are wanting. They will spoof an unsuspecting, legitimate ham, who does not
include an email address in their QRZ listing. There are several tell-tale
signs of such an operation, and such was the case yesterday with the offer to
sell me KAT500, SN 0296.

I wrote this group yesterday, hoping that perhaps the rightful owner would step
forward. Sure enough, last evening the real owner of the equipment contacted
me. Interestingly, asking for a close-up photo clearly showing the Serial
Number will usually stop these guys in their tracks, but yesterday the scammer
provided me with that photo. These guys are becoming very sophisticated.

Anyway, thanks for bearing with me while I outed this scammer.

73 es Stay Safe,

Jim – WS6X

P.S. I’m still looking for a KAT500. Any offers? 😊

[Elecraft] KAT500?

2023-11-19 Thread W2HX
Hello there. I am not currently an owner of any elecraft product, but I am
seriously considering a KAT500 for use with older analog radios. I hope this is
the right place to ask because the elecraft website page for subscribing to
this list (https://elecraft.com/pages/community) only mentions
"KX1/K1/K2/K3/KX3/P3/KPA500" but here goes.

I am interested in the native capabilities of the remote control software I
looked on the elecraft website and only found this manual which only covers
installation of the software:
https://ftp.elecraft.com/KAT500/Remote%20Software/KAT500-Remote.pdf

But I am interested in what screens are behind the buttons such as Power, Tune,
Antenna, Mode, et. Al. But I cannot find any documentation beyond this
installation manual. Does it exist? Or does someone know of a youtube video I
can watch that goes through this program? I understand that many folks are
using node-red for control of the KAT, but right now I'm looking to see the
functions of basic application.

Generally, I am wondering if the software supports:

  1. Setting the SWR threshold -- below which, the tuner will consider a
tuning solution to be "done"
  2. Once the tuning solution is found, the manual changing the L's and C's to
fine tune the match as much as possible and then store to memory
  3. Settings for which antenna should be used for which bands
  4. Can an antenna be set for use with multiple bands (like OCF dipole)? Or
only one band per antenna?

Thanks very much!

See http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf (K9YC's paper) which includes
excellent recipes for baluns. A balun of proper design, dimensions and
impedance on the output of a tuner will allow for balanced antenna
operation.

Sorry Joe,
Eric is on vacation this week, and things in Watsonville will go on as
previously intended, but webpage updates will have to wait for Eric's
return. Yes, it is Summer vacation time - these kind of gaps can be
expected. We all need our R&R - whatever that may be for us. I suspect
Eric will be bringing back some great underwater photos! I have seen
some of his work and it id phenomenal.

[Elecraft] KAT500 remote?

2012-07-19 Thread Sean Logghe
I suspect this falls in Eric's court and won't get a response until he digs
out from under the "post-vacation blues" but add my voice to the requests
for any update information about a remote version of the KAT500 antenna
tuner.

Any availability/delivery information would be great. Even negative info,
like "definitely not before 1/1/13" for example.

Of course, potential functional descriptions would be exciting, as well.

I know, I must have a masochistic streak as I wait patiently in the queue
for my ordered KX3 (March 2nd), and ordered KAT500 (Dayton). (That's still
on track for 15 AUG, right?) And now I want to tee up another product to
wait for? :-) Oy vey! But, contest season approaches and decisions beg to
be made.

They say patience is a virtue so I must be very virtuous, or maybe I am the
exception that proves the rule? ;) (Take that however you wish!)

So here is a plea for any information that your business plan allows you to
share.

Thanks and best regards,

Sean Logghe

Sad you feel this way. I have been enjoying my KX3 for about a month now.
Yes, I waited almost 6 months from the date of my pre-order. I did the same
for my K3. Neither was "vintage" when received. Hardly. In fact even with
the early-adopter pre-order wait, there was still nothing on the market that
compared with either product. I also pre-ordered a KAT500 when Elecraft
announced they were comfortable enough with the design to accept orders.
When it arrives, I will enjoy that also.

I like the Elecraft products and also have several of their radios/meters/amp

products unjustified; the reflector serves to keep the prices inflated and
promotes the products using the customers as unpaid salesmen.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-07-21 Thread Gary Gregory
*Bruce,

I think we all should remember that in order to release a new product,
Elecraft will first ship out the Field Test Units where they use these to
thoroughly test out the design and functionality ok the equipment unlike
shall we say 'other' manufacturers and reduce the risk of shipping
equipment that falls short of customer expectations.

the second advantage of doing this is to refine the manual and reduce as
many of the errata changes as possible. Remember too that the manual writer
only wants to do the job of writing once and needs feedback from users to
allow the author to write the manual in such a way as to help users
understand the equipment and when it comes to assembly it helps with the
wording of that manual also.

Elecraft can only give you information that is accurate and we should not
expect them to release a daily sheet on where they are at with a particular
product.

The FT units will ship out 'soon' and testing will not be a long period
with something like a KAT500 when compared with say the K3 as there are
obviously less features/functions to deal with for a KAT500 vs a K3/KPA500.

The fact they have not 'moved' the hopeful release date is encouraging for
those of us that are waiting.

Kenwood have shown of there latest 'future' release and still no exact
release date and this also is to be expected as they await FCC approval etc
as well as final FW release.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-07-21 Thread Gary Gregory
*Ron,

The advertising by Elecraft is refreshing for most. Inclusion of customers
in the discussion of interoperability of their products allows the customer
views to be talked about at Elecraft.

Your view expressed here may indeed result in further discussion at
management level. You may not be privy to those discussions of course, but
may result in some refinement of the way they do business. How can this NOT
be a positive?

You seem to think the products are overpriced, but consider this, if cost
of production over set period of time for XXX amount of units VS say XX
number of units will effect the cost of components and overhead with
engineering etc...all these variables play a part in accurate costing of
production. Smaller manufacturers such as Elecraft strive to be competitive
but need to return a profit to stay viable and the current financial
situation around the globe does not help I imagine.

If Elecraft produce a quality product and needs to sell them at a 'premium'
some 10-20 percent higher than we as customers expect to pay then it is the
customer who must decide if it is value for money or not. This also applies
to any manufacturer and in in the world of amateur radio products I am
happy to buy those Elecraft products that suit my requirements. I don't
need the 'bling', I only need equipment that DOES meet the operational
requirements for me, NOT what a manufacturer states I need and believe me
there IS a difference. I was once a Dealer (NEW not Pick-Up reseller) and
this was for several manufacturers and I choose Elecraft products based on
equipment performance rather than price.

The above opinions are mine and not those of elecraft as I am just a
customer, nothing more.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-07-21 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
That is certainly a goal, Gary, but Wayne and Eric are adamant about my
incorporating any customer feedback that makes sense no matter how many
changes it requires. Little of that feed back is direct about the manual
although I appreciate hearing about any overlooked typos, etc. Most often
the changes are clarifications and additions in response to questions
directed to Customer Support because a step wasn't clear.

The hard and fast goal for the first revision of any manual is for the very
first customer who gets the product to be able to easily and correctly build
it (if a kit) and operate it. After that the changes are all refinements,
but there are often many.

On the kit assembly manuals (Wayne handles the KX3, K3 and several other
Owner's manuals and looks 'over my shoulder' on the rest), I sit down with
only the tools listed in the manual and approach the kit as a first-time
builder while writing the first draft. Then I tear the rig apart and do it
again to validate the steps. And often a third and fourth time to try
alternate assembly techniques or to confirm that the corrections I made to
the first draft are correct. The KX3 on my desk has been apart at least a
dozen times so far. The K3 well over 30 times, and the KPA500 about as many.

And that's why I monitor the reflector and Yahoo group. Comments there alert
me to things still overlooked about any of the current products.

I did not expect my additional comments on My KAT500 posting to appear on the
Reflector; thought they would be private responses to private e-mails. Live
and learn. I do disagree with marketing that raises demands without an
ability to meet the demand for months or years. I think instant
gratification is what drives Hamfests and much of hobby-buying; new "toys"
are constantly coming on the market, and I think many of us expect to buy
now what is advertised now. I understand others are willing to wait and
track and graph KX3 shipments etc. This also raises expectations and
increases demand; nothing to do with quality or technology. It drives sales.
Owning and enjoying K/1, K2, K3, P/3, W2, and the KPA500 I admit to being an
Elecraft fan and await the KAT500. Nevertheless, I do object to marketing
what is not readily available and not providing regular updates on the
status of those products delayed for whatever reason. I know the folks at
Elecraft are busy; no one is THAT busy. 73 Ron KM4VX

Elecraft has a long standing practice of announcing products well in
advance of production, and making it clear that they are doing so.
Elecraft is a small company, with limited resources, and they operate in
the same real economy as the rest of us. In that real world, parts
often take a lot longer to obtain than when projected, parts vendors
don't always ship what they promise, things don't fit on the circuit
board, so it has to be re-designed, a new operational capability is
requested which requires re-design, design engineers may have personal
issues, or may get diverted to solving a problem with an existing
product, and so on.

I greatly appreciate Elecraft's product announcements, and I accept them
for what the are. They allow me to plan for building out my station --
in my case, I've been improving my antenna farm, working out switching
for it, and working on replacing the manual Ten Tec antenna tuners for
my wire antennas. The KAT500s will do that, and help with the
switching. While I'm waiting for the tuners (I ordered at Dayton) I'm
continuing to work on the rest of it, and when they arrive I'll be ready
for them.

Not long after I finished college I was working in an engineering lab
and needed repairs on my VW beetle. I had been introduced to a great
mechanic who had his own small shop, and took it in for repair. There
was a lot of work, and it wasn't going to be cheap. Later that day I
called him to tell him to stop working on it because I'd lost my job.
I'll never forget his response -- "Don't worry about it, when you have
the money, I'll still need it." He did the work, and I picked up the
car a few days later.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-07-22 Thread N5GE

This thread reminds me of a very annoying advertisement by the Mitsubishi motor
company in the mid 80's.

It started with a very loud male voice, saying, "GET WHAT YOU WANT AND GET IT
NOW!"...

I'm very happy with the way Elecraft handles their business and I like their
products very much, even when I have to wait for them.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-07-23 Thread Phil Hystad
The Elecraft web site has a shipping status page that contains all kinds of
useful information about the shipping status of each product and even
components of products.

But, it is missing information about the new items like KX3 and KAT500. Maybe
Eric can get the time to add these to that shipping status table. Useful
information would be like for the KAT500, planned shipping date of August 15,
2012. For the KX3 it might be useful to know the estimated backlog. Backlog
can be reported in days or weeks to erase the backlog given current estimated
new orders versus the time to process each order. Indeed, maybe some queueing
theory work can be done.

I think such information regularly updated (I see the current shipping status
page was updated July 19th) would be very good at informing people about the
status of these newer products.

Yes, I know that. But, ease of use comes from association. Where do you find
the "status"? Answer: on the "status" page. Sure, also having it on the
order page is good too.

I guess they figure that there is no "Shipping Status" if the item hasn't

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

The fact that the item has not started shipping is indeed good "shipping
status" information. You must include all the possible transition states for
the status otherwise the information is incomplete.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-08-17 Thread Jon K Hellan
I've got a K3, a hand me down Ameritron AL-811 amp, an LDG AT-600 Pro
tuner, and often use somewhat strange antennas. (See picture at
www.ha19.no/la4rt/ ).

I'm considering replacing the LDG tuner with a KAT500. The LDG unit
isn't bad, but it's got a confusing user interface, and it's so noisy
that I can't let it run a full tuning cycle while people are sleeping
next door. It also doesn't match quite as well as the built in tuner in
the K3.

Can the field testers comment on what the KAT500 sounds like. Has
anybody had the opportunity to compare both tuners?

The el cheapo amp will stay for the foreseeable future, so I'm
interested in if and how the combination will work. I found an old
thread with a lot of info:

Will the cable from the K3 be useful even with a "dumb" amp?

I guess this means that the PTT line goes
[ K3 ]---[ KAT500 ]---[ AL-811 ]
And that the K3 tune button will tune the KAT500 when it's inline, and
the KAT500 won't let the amp key up unless the tuner is ready. Correct?

Umm...
I want one of these but I have an MFJ998 which works well. One thing I like
is seeing the values that it selects for the L network. It seems to have an
almost reliable memory and tunes in a few seconds without a lot of clatter.
Probably the best MFJ item I have ever bought. OT, don't ask me about the 75
amp "clean" switching power supply that put birdies all up and down 75
meters. I enacted the no-questions-asked return policy on that.
I'll get the KAT500...any chance that it's possible to observe the tuner
values on VFO B on the K3...or the VGA display etc? That would be so nice.
I'm not asking if it's in the works, just if it can be done in future
programming by Elecraft. Any ideas?

usually a matter of several seconds when returning it remembers and it's

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-10-05 Thread Bob
I have the K3 and KPA500 tied together with the Elecraft 15-pin cable.
Will a second cable ship with the kPA500, or is this a separate item?
(Since two 15 pin cables are now required). Is this just a duplicate of
the first?

Since shipping is about to start, I suspect I'm not the only person who
will have that issue -- better to add a cable now to the existing order
than getting it in and discovering I don't have all that is needed to get
it hooked up.

And that said, I'm going to start installing coax and baluns this long
weekend (Columbus Day), so this is perfect timing.

No, you want to daisy-chain the KPA500 after the KAT500, so that the
KAT500 can interrupt amp-keying during tuning. The KAT500 has AUX
guzinta and guzoutta for this purpose. You just need one additional
cable.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-10-05 Thread Dick Dievendorff
For a K-line, you'll want a 15-pin cable from K3 (after the Y) to the KAT500
and another from the KAT500 to the KPA500. The KAT500 interrupts the KPA500
key line in that cable during tune, and both the KAT500 and KPA500 observe
the K3's BAND0 thru BAND3 lines.

If you aren't using a K3, then the KAT500, like the KPA500, can sense band
changes by counting the Tx frequency.

But it's very convenient to band switch the K3 and have the ATU and amp
follow without requiring a transmission. The ATU switches to the last-used
antenna on band switch (or to a fixed antenna you configure). It's nice not
to have to send a "dit" to make that antenna switch happen.

The manual is in progress.

I guess the question now becomes - Is that cable going to be supplied with the
KAT500 or do I have to contact Elecraft and have an additional cable placed on
the order I put in back in May, during the Dayton Hamvention? Been waiting
patiently for that order to be filled so it would be nice to know if I have to
order another cable before the KAT500 finally gets here.

Is BAND0-BAND3 and active "repeat" function or a passive "Y"? It
makes a difference in cable to support a remote KAT500.

Any other functions required in the KAT500 (Aux bus?)?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500

2012-10-05 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
I'm fairly sure that the AUX cable will NOT be supplied (it wouldn't
be useful for non-K3 users) but it's probably best to just call
the sales dept and ask.

I elected to make my own short (~1ft) AUX cable, which works well when
the KAT500 is placed directly underneath the KPA500. It requires 7
wires (4xBand Data, AUXBUS, PTT and Ground).

Rather than yelling here, why don't you call the Sales dept and ask?
If they tell you "no" (which I strongly suspect they will), they
should be able to add one to your order.
