Currently +/- 100 kHz (200 kHz total Span width.) 2 kHz minimum span. We plan to also add even wider spans by concatenating multiple 200 kHz scans onto 1 screen. Mostly useful for watching wider bands like 10M for activity. I find I personally use +/- 25 kHz or less on CW and +/- 50 to 75 kHz on SSB. 73, Eric WA6HHQ On 2/15/2010 4:11 AM, juergen wrote: Is the maximum displayed bandwidth on the P3 100khz as discussed in the video? Using I/Q feeds is just a way of running the A/D convertors at half the speed for the same overall bandwidth (although at the cost of having two A/D convertors, two mixers and more complex local oscillator circuitry). I think it also reduces the DSP power required by about a factor of two, as one solves for both positive and negative frequencies, whereas the negative frequencies from a single mixer are the same as the positive ones and are just thrown away at the end of the processing. -- David Woolley we do not overly restrict the subject matter on the list, and we encourage postings on a wide range of amateur radio related topics List Guidelines http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_list_guidelines.htm __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Photo
Although the P3 product is still in development, it looks like a very attractive and functional matching accessory for the K3. A few questions: - What is the typical MDS seen on the display? - Is a low-noise, unity-gain buffer w/ BPF utilized at the I.F. input? - Assuming it's powered from the K3 or alternate +12VDC source, what is the measured amount of current (thinking ahead for portable operation)? - Any photos of the tentative back panel available? Although I probably would have opted for a stand-alone black box device (and hoping that may be an alternate version one day), I can see the marketing logic where a large number of potential purchasers are looking for a transceiver with a built-in panadapter. Even though the P3 is a stand-alone unit, it appears to be well-integrated with the K3 to give it a built-in look and feel. This should put the K3 in the running for buyers who would otherwise purchase the K3 but for the fact that it lacks a built-in panadapter. Absolutely correct Guy, I followed the long thread a while back about power supplies to try and learn what others had done to help with switchers. I find it true as you say its impossible, one can only bring the switcher noise down to some acceptable level, with many beads and by pass caps etc I finally have the noise down almost to the point it is covered by antenna noise on each band. Some supplies it was not possible to do that even. The P3 will open a lot of eyes as to what is really power supply broad band noise and what is real atmospheric noise. It will show that up quite well. Maybe some hams will find their s5 and higher noise levels are self generated and be able to lower that by several DB. A whole new world of DX will await. Or just go back to a old heavy transformer type supply and be almost noise free. 73 Merv KH7C __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] P3 Photo
That's what I've been lobbying for. The P3 with I/Q outputs, 400 KHz bandwidth, and computer control (via the K3 or direct) would have powerful SDR capabilities with all kinds of potential third party applications. Without the I/Q outputs, it's a very expensive dedicated display. Possibly Elecraft yet has some version of that in mind, but with all the fuss I've raised on the topic I would have expected some indication if they did. Oh well ... 73, Dave AB7E Paul Christensen wrote: Here's what's interesting: If the P3 does in fact use a quadrature mixer post I.F. buffer amp (and not directly digital-sampled like the SDR-IQ), that means all the hooks are in place to feed its I/Q outputs to a premium sound card and of course...PowerSDR as an alternate display and decoder. Wayne said that it began working last Wednesday night. It is presently set at a refresh rate of ~6/sec and he said it could easily go to 20. Current draw is presently about 250ma but with a few more accessories he has planned could go to 300ma. He also said that the font presently in there is quite small and that a larger one is planned. They roughed it together for the show. (Nice roughing!) Geoff, K6TFZ Anyone have a phone that can take video? Re: [Elecraft] P3 Photo
My first reaction to seeing the P3 was that its front panel layout is presently designed for it to be located on the LEFT side of the K3. I know all the left handed people out there will say that's fine but as a rightie I disagree. Placing it on the left of the K3 it sits next to the front panel Mic and Phone connectors (with associated cables). It also sits next to the left mounted carrying handle (scratches from existing handle mounting screws). For me, this left side location forces me to shift the radio 7 inches to the right of my seating position. Guess I'm an old fart who expects various rig accessories (speakers, DMU's, scopes, etc) to be located on the right. I'm sure someone will say that all I would have to do is move the unit to the right side. However, the existing proto-type layout is not optimized for that location. Perhaps Elecraft will entertain reversing (flip) the existing front panel layout to allow optimized right side location. The only reason I can think of that may have prompted the P3's present location is the closer proximity to the IF Out/Accessory connectors, or all the designers at Elecraft are left handed ;-) Nice hi-res display, 400 KHz max display span, matching K3 esthetics. Going to be a very popular accessory for the K3. 73, Frank - W6NEK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Photo
I don't see what you're talking about here at all.. Honestly looking at that picture I see this thing as optimized for placement on the right side of the K3. That gives you easier access to the select knob and the buttons along the right side. Hell if all else fails you can set the thing on top of the K3. Just because something is set on the left side doesn't mean its ergonomically designed to set there. It would do equally well on top of and to the right of the K3. Bout the only thing its not designed for is to sit below the K3. ~Brett (KC7OTG) On Sat, 2009-08-15 at 15:21 -0700, W6NEK wrote: My first reaction to seeing the P3 was that its front panel layout is presently designed for it to be located on the LEFT side of the K3. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Photo
My only advice before it goes to production: Make the cabinet 1 wider, and stack some band buttons there. Maybe 2 wider with a bunch of programmable buttons that we can forget what they are programmed for. Loop the rs-232 signal through this box to send the band change commands. And then it will be the P3AAA ! tom bosscher K8TB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] P3 Photo
I'm a leftie and I had thought it would be on the right - from the photo, I can't see what would prevent that? 73 de M0XDF, K3 #174 -- Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for powers equal to your tasks. -Phillips Brooks, bishop and orator (1835-1893) On 15 Aug 2009, at 23:21, W6NEK wrote: left handed people out there will say that's fine but as a rightie I disagree. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] P3 Photo
Hmm. We may have a religious issue here. I was delighted to see the P3 positioned on the left BECAUSE I am right-handed. I send CW with my right hand and adjust the primary radio with my left hand. Stuff located on the right side of the panel (or to the right of the panel) must be adjusted while obscuring most of the panel. I suspect, however, that the P3 will come with sufficiently long cables to be placed on either side. /Rick N6XI On 8/15/09, W6NEK w6...@socal.rr.com wrote: My first reaction to seeing the P3 was that its front panel layout is presently designed for it to be located on the LEFT side of the K3. I know all the left handed people out there will say that's fine but as a rightie I disagree. Placing it on the left of the K3 it sits next to the front panel Mic and Phone connectors (with associated cables). __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
