Re: [Elecraft] W2 control wire length?

2023-03-20 Thread Victor Rosenthal 4X6GP
I don't know, but it would be easy to try with a coil of Ethernet cable
and some resistors.
The question is, why do you want to do this? You can easily compute the
real SWR and power at the feedpoint based on the reading in the station
and the transmission line loss from the cable specs.

2021-06-08 Thread David Herring
Just to wrap up this question for the benefit of anyone else who is interested
or may search for this later…

Jack’s response prompted me to go back and take a second look at the schematics
for the couplers. Somehow I missed this the first time through, but it would
appear that the coupler will provide a short to ground for a DC bias voltage by
way of the secondary winding in T1.

So I’m going to take “no” for an answer here. ;-) I don’t think the HF
couplers will pass a DC bias voltage on through like I had hoped.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Issue

2021-05-20 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Bill;

R22 in the sensors is a sense resistor that tells the controller which sensor
is attached. It is a very low stress part that sees at most 5 volts at very low
current. R22 is different for each sensor - the values shown in the schematic
are not necessarily correct. Also, these are precision 1% resistors. With that
in mind, the values are:
2KW HF Sensor, R22 is a 2K ohm 1% SMT resistor.
200W HF Sensor, R22 is a 1KW 1% SMT resistor.
200W VHF Sensor, R22 is a 4.7K 1% SMT resistor.

We need to be careful what we might plug the sensor cable into. The standard
box would not stress the resistor to the degree that the resistor blew,
especially since that connector also has a ground attached as well. If it were
to be plugged into something like an ethernet adapter, I would expect the
sensor not to survive since those pins connect to entirely different signals
with different characteristics.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter

2020-08-29 Thread Don Wilhelm

Joe,

The telling answer is in your statement "the radio has an internal ATU".
The radio is showing the SWR between the radio and the ATU.
The wattmeter is showing you the SWR after the ATU - in other words, the
SWR of the untuned antenna. So there may be nothing wrong.

Connect a dummy load to the wattmeter output and see what that reads -
should be 1.0.

the LEDs show 1.5 - 1. So if I hit 1.2 - 1 the LEDs all flash so I can not tell
at a glance if the SWR is good. So I was wondering if any one had seen this or
know if it can be fixed without sending it in. I already replaced the

I have two W2 units that I use with different K3's and different W10
computers. One of them is reluctant to connect when I start up the W2
utility program. So I power the W2 off and back on with the utility program
active and it connects just fine. This is consistent behavior.

The other seems to be able to connect just fine. I have not spent any time
trying to figure out why one requires the off/on sequence but just live with
it.

There may something in the physical connection to the computer. i.e.
through a USB port, through a COM port, etc.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Sensor issue

2018-07-15 Thread Bill Johnson
I would suggest you may have a cable issue to test first. Try reconnecting the
connectors. And if you test at the site. There are so many variables, we
humans cannot help with being on site. Take a few cell photos and then post to
get help.

Subject: [Elecraft] W2 Sensor issue

I wonder if anyone has seen this before.

I was chasing a problem with high SWR on my 2K HF probe where on the radio, the
antenna SWR reads 1.3:1 without the SWR probe installed and 2.9:1 with it
installed.

Yes, I have changed my RG214 jumper cables to a few others. I even replace the
probe with a double female couple and the SWR dropped down to what I expected
(about 1.3:1).

It is only on 6M that it has bad readings. This is at my remote base, and
as I right this, I should have tested on a dummy load, but that will have to
happen on my next trip.

So, as I asked before, anyone else see it fail only on 6m?

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter maximum Cat5 cable length

2018-07-10 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
The cable is indeed not cat-5, but rather 8 individual wires that carry power
and ground one way (to the box) and analog sensor signals back. The twist
action in CAT-5 does not help here at all.
The things to watch for are signal loss due to resistance (shouldn’t be too
bad, depending on the wire and length), and RF pickup. The latter can lead to
bad and erratic readings.
The best advice is to keep the cable as short as possible.

2018-07-10 Thread Dick Green WC1M
Thanks. First real info I've gotten. I said Cat5 because the documentation
mentions it and I believe it says you can use a standard Ethernet cable.

I haven't taken a close look at the coupler circuitry. If it's like most remote
couplers I've seen, a too-long cable can cause a drop in the DC voltages that
carry the forward and reflected power signals. If the coupler does a conversion
to digital, then the cable length wouldn't be an issue. But that sounds pretty
fancy!

the standard cable is not Cat5, it's just a ribbon cable with RJ45's (I

Cat5 should work, though, and I'd be surprised if anything less than ~50ft+

Seems like I had a power connector issue with mine once. Using a
different power cable took care of it.
One of the sensor lights should be lit.  If no sensors are connected the

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter 440 band accuracy?

2017-07-30 Thread Don Wilhelm

Michael,

In general, digital wattmeters have the same accuracy at any point on
the scale - unlike analog wattmeters for which the accuracy is stated as
a percentage of the full scale reading. On a 20 watt scale, a 25% error
would be up to 4 watts!

You might want to look at the specs for that 440 MHz transmitter as
well. If it 2.6 dB or so, getting 2.8 watts out for a 5 watt setting
may be what you can expect.

2017-07-30 Thread Philip
That would depend on what kind of digital you are talking about. I don't
think the W2 reads instantaneous peak power. That usually takes special
circuitry to do . Hint: a digital slug for a bird 43 wattmeter costs way
more than the meter does. Analog meters will not read properly in a
digital environment. Try the radio in analog mode.

I see that the W2 can support up to 2 remote sensors, selectable from the
front panel.
Is it possible to support more (say 4 total) with some kind of external
switching arrangement?
I have a K3 with three XV series transverters (144, 222, 432). Each
transverter feeds a power amp and connects to an antenna for that band. I
currently use separate external meters at the output of each amplifier. I'd
like to replace those with a single meter that can monitor whichever band
I'm transmitting on.

Dave,

Certainly, just find a switch that can switch all the wires of an
Ethernet cable and you will be in business.
Of course, you would have to operate the switch manually unless you can
come up with some scheme to operate the switch when each transverter is
powered on.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 setting SWR alarm trip points

2017-01-05 Thread Chuck Guenther

Hi Mike,

Thanks for pointing this out. I did try both bracket characters anyway,
though. I did solve my problem, though. After searching the archives, I
found that one may need to send repeated bracket commands to the W2. I
tried this and it worked! I was able to set my SWR trip point where I
wanted it, at 3.5:1.

I'm using the W2 utility version 1.3.2.27 and my W2 firmware is version 1.00. I have the PTT keying cables
connected to the W2, and am trying to set the SWR trip point that will open the amplifier keying connection.
On p. 8 of the version D2 manual it says I can toggle the alarm on / off by sending the character
"a" to the W2. This seems to be working okay in that I get the expected responses "a1,"
and "a0."

The manual does not specify what the factory default trip point is. It does indicate that I can
move the trip point up or down by send the bracket characters "}" and "[" to
the W2, and that the response will be a number with an implied decimal point. But all I get is 00
in response.

What am I doing wrong? This is very confusing.

Subject: [Elecraft] W2 problem

Hi everyone,

I have a little used W2 wattmeter that has stopped working, but I have
recently had access to a working unit so I could test the display and sensor
unit independently. Both of mine have faults -

The display has lost port nr 1 and it looks like R10 has been damaged on the
PCB. What physical size is this resistor? I can see from the cct diagram
that it is 330R. I don't do much SMD work so don't recognise the physical
sizes.

My 2KW HF sensor displays high SWR and low power into a known good load when
used with my friends "good" W2. I cant see any physical problems, so how do
I go about fault finding this or getting it fixed?

Can I use a regular Ethernet cable to connect display and sensor? I used one
to test my display with a known good sensor on port 2, but sometimes the
display went haywire whilst on the air. I see elecraft supply a flat 8P8C
RJ45 cable, so I guess there is an engineering reason for that?

Thanks for your advice!

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter Failure

2015-05-13 Thread Alan

Hi Roger,

I'm looking at the W2 kilowatt sensor schematic and scratching my head
trying to figure out how that could have happened. There are 49.9k
resistors in series with all the op amp inputs, so there would have to
be hundreds of volts coming out of the detectors to damage the devices.
Plus the fact that all 4 op amps (actually two dual op amps) were
destroyed argues against that as well.

I would suspect the 5V op-amp power supply. Perhaps there was a failure
in the W2 power supply or maybe a spike on the supply. A large voltage
transient causing a current spike in the sensor cable might do it,
although it is hard to imagine 50W at 475 kHz doing that.

using the W2, because my 630m transmitter has its own internal SWR
meter. When I returned to normal HF operation, I noticed the W2 was
not working. I discovered all four unity gain op-amps in the W2
directional coupler were destroyed. I replaced the op-amps and the W2
operated normally again. The W2 wattmeter is not intended to operate
below 1.8 MHz, but it does have a 2KW rating, so one could be
forgiven for assuming it could handle 50 watts at 475 KHz. Next time
I operate on 630 metres, I will by-pass the W2. Roger, VK4YB

The FCC's standard for transmitter metering is the minimum normal
reading cannot be less than 20% of the full scale reading for a
linear-scale instrument or 33% for a logarithmic-scale instrument. For
a digital readout, the readout of the device must include at least three
digits and must indicate the value of the parameter being read to an
accuracy of 2%.

See FCC Rules Section 73.1215 for other details.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Meter Question

2014-06-04 Thread Vic Rosenthal
I understand that you have the sensor connected to the vertical
permanently. But when you transmit on one of the other antennas, it
reads a very high SWR, even though out of the circuit.

What it sounds like is that the vertical is picking up RF from the
dipoles. When they are selected, the coax to the vertical is either
shorted or open, depending on the switch. The coax to the vertical is
operating at a high SWR -- it is just being excited by the RF pickup,
not the transmitter.

One solution would be to put the sensor in the line from the transmitter
to the switch rather than from the switch to the vertical.

Question/Problem:

When using the vertical, the meter works on the A side of the switch
works properly. But, using any of dipoles, on the B side of the switch,
it goes crazy and all the diodes light up. It only does this when the

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Meter Question

2014-06-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
The wattmeter should be connected between the KPA500 and the KAT500 if
you want to read a low SWR. The SWR that is seen by the KPA500 is the
only thing that matters, and that would normally be 1.5 or less.

Your connection (between the tuner and the antenna) will not change the
SWR reading because you are reading the SWR into the antenna, and the
tuner will not alter that.

The tuner will not change the SWR on the antenna, but it's function is
to transform the antenna feedpoint impedance into something that will be
seen as a low SWR by the transmitter PA stages - it does not change the
SWR of the antenna/feedline itself.

If the SWR varies with the power level, that is usually a result of RF
on the outside of the coax that can only be properly cured by common
mode chokes placed in the antenna system.
See the RFI information presented by Jim Brown K9YC at
http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf for ways to eliminate common
mode current on the feedline as well as other problems with RFI
suppression in the hamshack.

I actually want a smaller version of the W2 so that it just shows 2 bars.
Call it a 'compact' mode view.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter not reading xv50 output

2014-01-23 Thread John Marvin
I'm not sure I can explain this. But it's possible the problem is a
combination of two possible error sources:

1) I believe the XV50 leds are displaying power based on the voltage at
the final stage, and is not using a SWR bridge to measure forward power.
The W2 is measuring forward power, so if the SWR is greater not 1:1 then
it will measure a lower value than what the XV50 is displaying. Did you
take note of SWR and reverse power using the W2 utility? Since you are
driving another amp I wouldn't expect a really high SWR though.

2) Did you build your XV50 or did you get a factory built version? If
factory built then Elecraft would have properly calibrated it. If you
built it, did you perform all the calibration steps? Since you already
mentioned you don't have a lot of test equipment, you may not have been
able to calibrate the XV50 properly. In particular, if calibrated
properly, 1mW drive should produce 20 watts output, not 30. Also, you
should try to avoid sending more than 1mW to the XV50.

Final question. How were you generating the test signal and what mode
were you using?

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter not reading xv50 output

2014-01-21 Thread John Marvin

Bob,

You should try installing the W2 utility (obviously you need to connect
your W2 to a computer via the USB/serial cable that came with the W2 in
order to do this). It shows the SWR and forward power with more
precision than you get with the led front panel display. It would be
interesting to see if you see a different reading when transmitting with
the XV50 vs. when you are not transmitting, even if the value is very
low (i.e. low enough not to light a single led).

Which range led is lit on the front panel?

I spoke to an Elecraft employee about bugs in the W2, and he confirmed
that there are a number of them and that they are planning to come out
with a new version of the firmware at some point (I don't want to say
'real soon now').

The manual IS incorrect about the alarm needing to be turned on each
time you power on. In a previous firmware update they made it 'sticky'
so that once you enable it, it stays enabled until you turn it off.

First question, how often can I poll it? My main loop polls for status,

Is it safe to reduce to 0.1 s?
Then, in the output of the 'i' command, bytes 2 and 8 seem to have the
same info, except that 8 also tells me if there's no sensor connected at
all. So, what's the purpose of byte 2?
The manual says that command 'c' would respond with 'c;' if alarm was
not active. Instead, I only get ';'. Looks like a bug in the manual?
Sometimes, one single 'c' is not enough to clear the alarm, I have to
repeat the command.
And about the alarm, the owner's manual says:
The SWR Alarm function must be enabled each time the W2 power is turned
on.
Instead, I see that it starts in Alarm ON mode. I can see this by
tripping it, and also the first 'a' command will report 'a0', which
means the alarm has been deactivated. Am I misunderstanding the manual?

Thanks

I can't speak for Elecraft, but the conversation took place in the last
couple of weeks. I also suggested that they add a net power display
mode (forward - reflected) like the Alpha 4510 and Telepost LP-100A
wattmeters have, since this more closely approximates what we understand
as power output than forward power whenever the SWR is greater than unity.

1. When I turn the W2 on, I hear the relay click, and it does interrupt

2. The W2 utility program (USB, running on XP) finds and communicates
with the W2. When I click on the ALARM button, the label changes from
OFF to ON.

3. But when I test it by transmitting into a 'wrong' antenna (SWR=13:1)
it does not flash LEDs or activate the relay.

4. Firmware is 1.00 and utility program is also 1.00.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter alarm function doesn't activate on hogh SWR

2013-12-29 Thread Vic Rosenthal K2VCO
Here is a reply that I received from another fellow on the reflector. I
followed his advice and it solved the problem (it was a direct reply so
I won't give his name or call, but I was very grateful for his help)!

-
You have to set the alarm SWR level by using the “[“ and “]” commands
(no quotes) in the W2 Utility program. [ lowers the SWR, ] raises it.
The initial value in the firmware is undefined, so you have to set it
yourself. You may have to issue multiple [ or ] commands to get a valid
response from the W2. This is a known firmware bug which is being worked
on, as is a few others. Another bug is that after the SWR alarm trips,
you have to push the “sensor” button multiple times to get the W2 to
reset, but if you have set PWR (serial) to PEP in the W2 GUI application
(not utility program), it will reset after one attempt.

Note that this is done using the W2 Utility program, which is not the
same as the W2 interface program. They are both downloadable from th
Elecraft site.

wattmeter?

I just assembled my unit. It seems to work correctly except that I can't
enable the alarm function.

1. When I turn the W2 on, I hear the relay click, and it does interrupt
the ptt at this point.

I use an Alpha 4510 Power/SWR Meter and it does have a power
delivered/forward setting just for that. That setting takes all of these
factors into consideration for the final product it reads from .03-3000w.
That is the reason for my trusted Oak Hills Research WM-2 QRP wattmeter
still in line for my KX3.

I just ordered a W2 wattmeter, haven't received it yet, and I already want
to change something!

It displays forward power and SWR. When the SWR is 1:1, then the power
output of the transmitter is equal to the forward power. But when it is
greater than 1:1, then the actual power output is the forward power LESS the
reflected power.

I would like an option to display this output power, forward less reflected.
This could probably be done in the firmware, a SMOP as Wayne likes to say.

I realize that this does not tell you the power delivered to the antenna,
for which you would need to know the line loss. But it is still a more
useful indication than just the forward power.

Dr Vic,

Iam using K2 and LP-100A Wattmeter for my remotely controlled station,
both works fine.

The K2 accuracy for SWR upto 2 is enough good (10%).

If you need more sophisticated Wattmeter, use the LP-100A.

LP-100A can indicate the pure FWD power. And many other parameters.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Question

2013-10-25 Thread Don Wilhelm
The internal tuner does not change the SWR on the feedline (at the
output of the tuner). It will change the SWR that is at the input of
the tuner, and that is the SWR indicated by the K3. The W2 is
indicating the SWR at the tuner output (and that will not change with
tuning).

For those who want to have the feedline SWR and the power output
displayed, the W2 is the way to go, if that does not interest you,
then it may not be of value to you.

They're both correct. The K3's internal tuner matches whatever
impedance it actually sees at the antenna connector to the K3's output
impedance [50 ohms] and thus the K3 sees 1.0:1 SWR. Neither it, nor
any other such tuner at the rig does anything to the SWR on the coax,
and the W2 is measuring the SWR on the coax.

Hi,
after carrying out on air tests with several K3-100s  I found that a PSK signal
becomes unacceptably wide over about 48 Watts out (indicated on the K3 meter
and/or a power meter).

80 Watts out would not get you any friends on a crowded band.

Similarly, the internal 10 Watt amp starts to spread with PSK at around 5watts,
so with the K3 for PSK best to avoid power over about 50 watts and between 5
and 12 watts (when the 100W PA kicks in).

Have you checked the ALC setting? You should have 4 bars of ALC
showing when you transmit with the 5th bar flashing. You can use
TX test mode to set the ALC without going out on the air.

If you don't have the ALC set correctly, the K3 will start
transmitting at less than the power it is set at and slowly
increase power as the power measurement feedback corrects the
output power.

It's also quite possible that your wattmeter is trying to display average
power output, in which case it takes a while to display the correct output.

Check the manual for that wattmeter and see what it says. Usually you have

Holding the SENSOR and RANGE buttons simultaneously changes between
peak-hold and average. You might also want to set the range to 200

Subject: [Elecraft] W2 - Possible Addition to Station

Currently my station includes a K3/100, P3, Ameritron AL-811 amplifier, and
the LDG AT-600 ProII auto tuner with the M-600 analog display. I have the
10-watt 2 meter module installed in the K3. Further, I am in the process of
building the 80-watt linear amplifier for 2 meters that was presented by
W6PQL in the May 2013 issue of QST.

The above equipment does not have the ability to display SWR or power output
on 2 meters with the amplifier online. So, I've been looking at something to
fill this gap. One option was the $80 MFJ-873 V/U meter. A second, much more
expensive option is the Elecraft W2.

I'm not a big fan of a string of LED's for measurement of anything, as it
simply does not give the resolution one would like to have. I dealt with
that when I had the Elecraft KPA500 last year. Nice to look at, but not
overly big on resolution. What I DO like about the W2 is the software that
is available from the web site - the W2 Interface Program. In addition to
bar graphs for SWR and Power Fwd/Ref, there is a numeric display with a LOT
more resolution than one normally would see with any analog meter. Since I
nearly always have my MacBook Air turned on when I operate, needing to have
a computer for higher resolution than LED's isn't an issue for me.

Out of 15 reviews on eHam.net, only two folks were displeased with the W2 -
one got a factory-assembled unit that was DOA and another fellow didn't care
for the LED operation. Discounting those two, the reviews were very
positive. HOWEVER, I've seen several W2 units up for sale here on the
reflector, and am wondering what's up with this product? Are there problems
that haven't been noted on eHam.net, or are folks simply unloading unneeded
equipment?

I had thought that if I went for a W2, I'd initially get it with the VHF/UHF
coupler, connecting it between my K3's 2M module and the 80-watt amp. If I
liked the way it worked, I could opt for the second coupler (QRO 1.8-54MHz),
sell the LDG M-600 meter, and put that coupler between the K3 and the LDG
auto tuner. The few pennies I'd get for the M-600 would help offset the
price of the W2. Kinda :-)

Thoughts on the W2, folks?

2013-09-02 Thread Jim Bennett
OK - looks like maybe I jumped the gun, so to speak. I just went back into the
archives and found several discussions on the W2; it appears that no one is
ready to head off to the Elecraft HQ with pitchforks and burning torches. In
fact, I didn't see any negative comments at all - only good stuff, so if I can
talk the XYL into my dropping some moola on yet more radio equipment, I'll
probably be ordering a W2 in a few days.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 - Possible Addition to Station

2013-09-02 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jim,

Under normal operation, the resolution between an SWR of 1.3 and 1.5 is
not of impo0rtance (pardon those who always strive for an SWR of 1.0).
At HF that amount of resolution is unimportant unless you are doing
measurements on your antenna system (that is different from normal
operating) - and in that case, you would likely be using the computer
connection to provide you with the greater resolution values.

I sense that several hams are offering their W2 wattmeters for sale
because they have purchased the KPA500 and/or the KAT500 and find that
the SWR display on those devices renders the use of the W2 redundant.

The W2 *is* an accurate wattmeter. I cannot comment on the accuracy of
the MFJ unit. In general, wattmeters are getting more accurate, but
some are still rated at 20% of the full scale readings - that is typical
for analog meter readouts.

So bottom line, do you want accuracy or do you want precision indication
of power and SWR. If your concern is for SWR only, keep in mind that
almost all wattmeters are accurate when they read an SWR of 1.0.

The above equipment does not have the ability to display SWR or power output on

this gap. One option was the $80 MFJ-873 V/U meter. A second, much more
expensive option is the Elecraft W2.

I'm not a big fan of a string of LED's for measurement of anything, as it simply does not
give the resolution one would like to have. I dealt with that when I had the Elecraft
KPA500 last year. Nice to look at, but not overly big on resolution. What I DO like about
the W2 is the software that is available from the web site - the W2 Interface Program. In
addition to bar graphs for SWR and Power Fwd/Ref, there is a numeric display with a LOT
more resolution than one normally would see with any analog meter. Since I
nearly always have my MacBook Air turned on when I operate, needing to have a computer
for higher resolution than LED's isn't an issue for me.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 - Possible Addition to Station

2013-09-02 Thread Don Wilhelm

Buck,

I agree *if* one is interested in the SWR at the antenna side, but most
are only concerned about the SWR that the transceiver or amplifier sees,
and that is at the input to the tuner. Both the KPA500 and the KAT500
indicate the SWR between the PA and the tuner.

Without the KPA500 and the KAT500, the K3/100 also indicates the SWR
between the PA and the tuner (unless the tuner is in Bypass)/

A low SWR indication at those points indicate that the tuner has done
its job, and the PA transistors are happy with a load that is within
their design parameters.

So the answer is that it all depends on what the operator wants to see.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 - Possible Addition to Station

2013-09-02 Thread Jim Bennett
Well, as I mentioned, I'm building the 80 watt amp from that QST article, and
need a way to do the initial tuning procedure. Got to have some sort of watt
meter, and the combination of SWR and Power (as most units provide) is
desirable. I agree that the difference between a 1.2:1 and 1.4:1 SWR is pretty
much irrelevant, but seeing an accurate change in output power can make a
difference in how the amplifier has been adjusted for peak output power. The
LED bars, with the VHF sensor, are only going to show me a change of 10 watts
per segment, while the computer display has a tad more resolution. The W2
appears to be a very nice piece of equipment, although it does hurt the
pocketbook. :-)

My W2 seems to read about as well as my Bird wattmeter from QRP to QRO is it
as good as a Oak Hills Research's QRP WM-2 no but few are. Is it an Alpha

I have mine from 1/2w -1500w without a problem for the money IMHO hard to
beat and I have 7-8 around here. It's a keeper for sure right now it's
monitoring my K2 and KX3 I have 2 sensors.

I wonder if W2 users keep the utility up on your PC screen during normal

2013-06-15 Thread Goldtr8 (KD8NNU)
Mine works great and comparing readings to my other equipment it appears
spot on. From barefoot low power on the k3 to my amp on. I use the peak
function all the time as I do a lot of SSB and it just makes me feel good.

I have the 2kw sensor.

It also helped me on 6m as I was running the k3 at 80 watts and only reading
50w peak on the w2. After removing all the stuff between the k3 and the w2
(amp anc) I got my whole 80w at the w2 sensor. So it showed me a 30w
loss in the system on 6m so that to me is pretty accurate.

I have two W2 meters and I like them .. But I do not rely upon them for
accurate power readings.. My more practical use is to use my peripheral
vision to keep tabs on what's going on while I'm on the air and be alert for
unexpected changes.

I think the Bird 43, when fully calibrated, claims plus or minus 5% accuracy
at full scale on their analog dial.

The W2 is probably close to that, but not quite (maybe 6% at best) ... there
are 17 leds on the 0-20 watt meter scale .. Doing the math, on the 2KW
scale, that's about 118 watts per LED ... so the power has to increase about
118 watts before the next LED will light up, etc., etc.Yes, you can get
a reading of presumed accuracy to the nearest watt if you us the W2 software
and keep a window running on your computer . but the LED display itself is
only capable of reading plus or minus 118 of actual wattage on the 2 KW
scale.. And I've never bothered to calibrate to see what it takes for the
next LED to light up .. Does it change when you (1) just cross the new
threshold, (2) hit the midrange area of the next step, or (3) go the full
distance.Bottom line, it really doesn't matter, but I do not use a W2 to
obtain accurate power readings just from the LED display.

close for all ranges both of my couplers are 2k's but still not bad for
 QRP.

Very happy with my W2. I have the 2KW coupler. Seems pretty accurate and
the LED display is great for casual use. I don't always keep the display
 up
on the computer but it's very useful when greater resolution than the LED
 display is desired.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter

2013-06-15 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
The W2 is great, but of marginal use for someone who has a rig with an ATU
built in.

Indeed, one of the reoccurring mistakes Hams make is to put the external W2
between the rig and the antenna and then wonder why it shows a high SWR when
the internal ATU reports 1:1.

The W2 or any watt/SWR meter must go between the transmitter and the antenna
matching network (ATU, etc.). Rigs like the K1, K2, KX1 and KX3 with built
in tuners do not offer a way to do that.

The W2 and W1 are handy for checking the SWR on a 50-ohm coaxial antenna
feed line. That's best done with the meter at the antenna end of the feed
line, but a general idea of how well matched the antenna is to the feed line
can be had by monitoring the SWR at the rig end.

It can also alert you to any unexpected changes in the antenna if you make a
note of the indicated SWR on each band. Any significant change in that SWR
indicates a significant change in the antenna, usually not for the best, Hi!

Re: [Elecraft] W2 wattmeter

2013-06-15 Thread John Marvin
As you mentioned, the W2 utility shows greater accuracy, although just
because it shows values in fractions of a watt, it doesn't mean that it
is that accurate. However, the nice thing about the W2 is that it has a
fairly nice calibration facility. So if you have or can borrow a higher
accuracy meter then you can use that to improve the accuracy of the W2.

Also, I really like the fact that the SWR bridge sensor is remote from
the unit. This allows a lot more flexibility for setup. In my case the
cable was just a little too short, but I wondered if a CAT 5e patch
cable would work. I did a little googling and saw an Elecraft employee
recommending that option. I don't know how long you can go before it
doesn't work or gives bad readings, but the patch cable I used was only
2-3 feet longer than the cable supplied by Elecraft, and it didn't
appear to affect the readings based on a simple before/after test.

Anyway, I think the W2 is a great product. However, Elecraft recommends
that it go between the amp and the ATU (Elecraft says that the accuracy
really starts to suffer with high SWR). That means that it might not be
very useful if I purchase a KXPA100 with the built in ATU.

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Interface Question

2012-12-30 Thread NZ0T
Well, dammit, the W2 window has reverted to being stuck in the upper left
hand corner of my Acer Aspire One again! I have tried everything I can
think of in the display portion of control panel even going to no desktop
(solid blue) and also trying the Windows XP theme which worked yesterday.
Obviously this is an issue with XP and or the small Acer (10.1) netbook
screen and not the W2 problem. Whatever I did yesterday worked for a time
but trying that again today is not working. So any help from someone who
understands XP and the Acer better than me is greatly appreciated!

I doubt very much that is a problem with the W2 software, more likely the
window display software?

using Firefox if that makes any difference.

 Any ideas?
