Yes, I am running my G0704 with a Dell Dimension 745, off lease that is
stacking up on the dealer shelves, got it sans drive and winders license
for $140, expect cheaper still where the tradein shelves are over
flowing. 4Gb of dram, a dual core intel cpu running at about 3GHz,
excellent low profile machine. His keeping of the drive and the winderz
installed on it made a 60 dollar difference in the asking price.

Its far more machine, with a decent latency, than the D525MW machines I
have two of running the lathe and the original toy mill. The only
problem I have had so far is the probe output for G38.x useage can
disappear from the 5i25 output. I thought the first time I had blown the
card, so I changed it, then this past week it did it again, and the
machine frame is now well grounded to the electronics box.

And a forced power down reboot caused by a 6 hour power failure fixed it.
So its possible the 5i25 I pulled out is good yet. I've been intending
to put it in the toy mills machine which is doing software stepping,
along with a new motor psu to replace the 28 volter with a 42 volter,
which should about double that machines rapids. Its slow, 15 ipm rapids
xy at best, 30 on Z because its still the acme screws drive I built
early on and its head weight is counter sprung. With dual bronze nuts
for backlash adjustments, its as tight as the ball screws I put in the
xy table. Its also done a lot of work for me over the years.
Only so much productive time available a day at my years, and I have
plans for all three machines when I find the time.

Cheers, Gene Heskett

It's good that you are doing this.

It you want to improve the audio the #1 rule is to place the
microphone as close as possible. It sounds to me like it is far
enough away to pick up so room echo. I'd invest in a good cavalier
microphone.

Better method is to do the audio as a voice over after you have edited
the video. Then you can use a studio microphone in a quiet
environment. Doing the voice over later also allows you to edit out
mistakes and those little things you don't really mean to say like
"ah" "awe" and "you know" and so on. Studio microphones can be
really close up. I set it up about 6 to 8 inches and use a pop filter

My shop is covered in hard surfaces with not much to absorb echo so I
fear that echo may be present in my future recordings. I have some soft
surfaces in my garage where I did the probe videos so echo was not so

Raymond,

I plan on announcing new videos that I produce on the mailing list and
the forum. So as long as you reside on this mailing list you should get
notification.

I will not necessarily be announcing videos that I put in other
playlists from other YouTube accounts. I am not sure if this shows up
through the subscription notifications either. So it may still pay to
check back every now and again to see what other interesting LinuxCNC
videos are out there.

To anyone else. If you have a tutorial video on LinuxCNC let me know so
I can add it to a playlist. If you have a video on some features that
you are using that may be of interest to others also let me know. I
don't take credit for these videos I put them in specific playlists that
are for others videos and are categorized based on the content.

Thanks,

Indeed, you can add lines to a HAL file to pop-up a halmeter of a
specific signal. pin or parameter, or you can get a halmeter and a
selector box to choose the signal from the Menu in Axis.
(You can also start halmeter by typing "loadusr halmeter" in the "show
HAL configuration" display command line, or in a terminal window if
you connect to HAL with "halcmd -kf"

I have not heard any feedback about the logo so I assume that it is OK

I will be covering the HAL tools in some upcoming videos.

For now you can see the official man page for halmeter here:

http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/man/man1/halmeter.1.html

I believe that you can launch the halmeter boxes automatically by adding
the commands to the launcher for your config. Can't really say for
certain right now but I can try it when I get back to my machine. Maybe
one of the wizards can chime in here. I am just an apprentice and
haven't graduated to wizard yet and probably won't for many years.

You can also see how to use it in the HAL manual here

http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/html/hal/tutorial.html#_halmeter

You can access the halmeter from the GUI's also. I don't remember
exactly where it is in Axis as I don't use it very much, but it is
located on the bottom of the settings page in Gmoccapy.

Hope that helps.

[Emc-users] Learning LinuxCNC Youtube Channel

2015-09-18 Thread Jim Craig
I decided that I would start a Youtube channel that is all about
LinuxCNC. I will be posting video tutorials of some common tasks and
going over some of the larger and seemingly more confusing topics that
go along with LinuxCNC. I also plan on putting up some informative
reviews of different items that I am using with LinuxCNC so that others
can make more educated purchases.

I took some liberty and modified the LinuxCNC logo for my channel by
changing the text below Chip and putting a graduation cap on him
signifying that he is learning about the features of the software. If
this is not legit let me know and I will gladly change the logo to
something different. If I need to put a particular credit in the videos
and on the channel then I am happy to do that also.

I am also going to try and make my channel a go to for LinuxCNC videos.
Keep in mind I am not monetizing my channel in the spirit of LinuxCNC. I
will link to other videos on my channel so that we can try to keep all
of the good LinuxCNC videos in one place. So if you have a good video
out there let me know and I will link it to the Learning LinuxCNC channel.

So for the first videos. Drum roll please!

I have mentioned that I was going to publish a video review of the touch
probe that I am using. Well here are the first two installments of the
video series on the touch probe. I should have the third and final video
out by the end of the weekend.

The first video is an unboxing and dis-assembly video of the probe
showing how it arrives and the parts that comes with it. Also shows how
to properly dis-assemble the probe for repair.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcazGaRj9Xs

The second video is about setting the touch probe up so the tip runs
concentric in your spindle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na6PzAlWdIw

I know the videography is less than perfect but it is more about the
info. Videography to improve on subsequent attempts (Cant get much worse!)

I think it is worth it for the things I will be doing. I think it is
faster and more accurate than me using an edge finder and making 0.0001"
jog movements. Stick slip gets me in that scenario. If I use an edge
finder I just jog in 0.001" increments.

The other thing is that replacement parts are available also. Good thing
as I already needed some due to my impatient and faulty brain.

There, Now I ruined the next video!

You've already put my mind at ease about setting up a probe.

This will be increadably helpful as more a more vids come on line.

Thanks for the resource Jim.

So for the first videos. Drum roll please!

I know the videography is less than perfect but it is more about the
