I paid around $2000 for my Shizouka, in good shape, with Bandit, tool
changer and some tooling. Hopefully, at this price, the buyer is serious
about restoring it.

That is extremely convenient. :-)

The last two base visits I had the GL guy met me at the gate and I
followed his car back to the pickup location.

No problem.

Buying from gov auctions is no big deal, just make sure you print out
all of the paperwork, and take it with you. The paperwork will have a
address, phone numbers, and date and time of pickup on it. It's been a
while, but I believe that I had to call, and confirm that I would be
there. Before I went, however, I was warned to follow all direction

I bought 2 Cummins 4B engines out of Ohio, I took everything I
thought I would need to load them, and it turned out that they were in a
warehouse that I wasn't allowed to enter. They took a fork lift and
loaded them onto my trailer, and even helped me center them over the
axles. All I had to do was strap them so they wouldn't move, and drive
several hundred miles back home. Those engines were listed as used, but
when I got them, they were fresh factory rebuilds, with 0 hours on them.

I've also bought some tents from Georgia, that came in 2 large wooden
crates 4'x4'x8'. They brought them out to me on a fork lift, and the
driver picked them up level with my truck, and helped me slide each one
into the back A day later, and I was at home trying to figure out how
to get them OUT of the truck. Turns out that the limb of the old oak
tree outside was enough to lift each one, and let me drive out from
under them. Moving them into the shop, was considerably harder.

Rusting outside...

That is pretty common. The vehicles I have bought from GL have usually
been sitting outside for at least a year before I pick them up.

I bought an F150 Ford Pickup truck and it had a big mouse nest on top of
the engine - seriously I took about a half a bushel of grass and other
nesting material out of the engine compartment.

The condition code of the truck was HX - and I should have taken heed as
the engine needs a rebuild.

That mill might be salvageable - I am sure that someone will take a
chance on it. If the control boxes cushioned the fall perhaps nothing
is seriously out of wack.

I'd be concerned about the user load stipulation on that one. If that
mill is on the 5th floor.. in the corner.. removing it might take some
good skates, johnson bars, a few strong bodies, and some patience..

Usually on stuff like that they will load onto a flatbed.

That machine cost $85k new, so the standard of bearings, castings,
screws etc is likely to be a lot better than a built-down-to-a-price
$6.5k machine. Given that we (collectively) know how to build CNC
controls very cheaply the damage to the contoller is largely
irrelevant.

That's pretty sad to see. It really looks like the whole thing has been on
its side, and it's hard to believe there isn't significant damage to the
important stuff as a result. The lathes they sell at Penn State surplus
usually have been on their top, but they usually manage to keep the mills
upright.

When I was in the Air Force, they used to keep the surplus machine tools
outside, uncovered and rusting. That used to drive me nuts even though I
had no place to put one at the time.

Re: [Emc-users] OT: Possible Retrofit candidate for someone in the heartland

2012-01-23 Thread Dave
I've bought from Government Liquidation before.

They usually do exactly what they specify. If they says users loads
.. it is your job to get the machine moved from where it is to your
trailer etc. Don't expect any help at all.

(You might want to ask how close you can get your truck/trailer to the
machine.)

The Goverment Liquidation people who are there when you load are not
Government employees so they have no control over the base equipment -
like forklifts etc.

But you can ask them questions also via the website add for
clarification. Try and get there when you say you will as the Goverment
Liquidation people often drive long distances to get to the base and if
you tick them off.. it could be a bad
situation.

Make sure your vehicle and trailer paperwork is in order when you go to
the base; insurance, registrations, drivers license etc and auction
paperwork that says "Paid" on it..
If you don't have it the base security guys can turn you away - no
matter how far you drove.

The last Air Force base I went to shuttled my truck and trailer into a
heated building specifically made for inspections. They have some
sensors in the floor etc and mirrors underneath also.
I had to pop the hood, open all of the doors etc so they could look
inside. The building was *really* nice.It was big enough to
accommodate a full size semi.

Government Liquidation also tacks on 10% for a sellers premium on top of
the auction price. If no EUC is required ( like this mill ) then you
usually need to pick it up within 10 days of payment and they are pretty
rigid about that.

If an EUC is required (for instance you are buying a military truck)
then you can wait for months after you pay to get clearance to receive
the item. Then you have 10 days unless you make special arrangements.

Most of the people seem to be pretty easy to deal with, but the system
is rigid.

2012-01-22 Thread a
Hi
why retrofit bridgeport machine when one can buy cnc machine X 50" Y 26"
travel CNC mill for $6.5 k
those bridgeport will have similar price anyway.
After one will buy used machine, beside retrofit controller with EMC2 need
to learn about how to rebuild axis -learn about TURCITE and Way Lock etc,
without which good controller will be just useless.

thanks

Interesting - I have a similar Wells Index waiting for some free time to
retrofit LinuxCNC on.

These were good machines, a lot used by the navy. Good manufacture support -
they have records based
on serial number - you can ask them about it before you buy.

In the only cases in which the masses have escaped from the
kind of grinding poverty you’re talking about, the only cases
in recorded history are where they have had capitalism and
largely free trade. If you want to know where the masses are
worst off, it’s exactly in the kinds of societies that
depart from that.

2012-01-21 Thread Dave
That machine was likely dropped on the bottom corner of the control
panel and then it roller over and hit the operator panel.

That machine could have a lot of problem besides the controls depending
on how far it fell.

Notice that "no loading assistance will be provided", perhaps the moron
who dropped it is dropping machines at another location now. ;-)

Look again. They obviously intended that machine to never be anything but
weighed for scrap. Whoever did that should be charged. Or at the very
least a whole case of whupass opened and used.

Ahh, they just tenderized it a little...

There's also an enormous 5 axis waterjet:

appropriately rusty of course.
