Re: [EVDL] Heater solution for S-10 conversion, tips & tricks
I also left the original hot water heater core in the vehicle. Can use either the on board power or use a transfer switch to use commercial power to preheat the heater while it is park and plug in. This work great since I did this modification back in 1980. Purchase most of the equipment from a local plumping and heating supply house. 1. The Element: A standard 2500 watt / 250 volt hot water heater element that can work on any voltage from 120 to 250 volts. 2. The Tank: A 3-inch copper pipe about 30 inches long with a tee fitting at one end for a heater hose take off and threaded adapter to screw in the heater element. A reducer bell pipe cap to fit the 3/4 inch hose fittings. This tank and element was place on the same platform that the original engine radiator was on. 3. Fill Tank with pressure cap: Use another 3 inch copper pipe place at the same position that the original radiator tank was in. Had a radiator shop attach a fill neck that takes a standard 15 lb pressure cap with a relief vent that has a small hose to a overflow tank. 4. A small 2.5 inch diameter by 4 inch brass circulating pump, 120 VAC @ 0.5 amp power by a 100 watt inverter you can get at JC Whitney that will run off 12 vdc. The Fill tank, heater tank, and pump are all connected in series with the heater hoses that are connected to the heater core. Both tanks and heater hoses are insulated with A/C high dense black foam hose insulation you can get at Home Depot. Use a Honeywell immersing sensor that screws in a tee fitting of the hose fitting that is connected to a Honeywell high temperature cut off. I have my set for 180 degrees F cut off with a 20 degrees differential that turns on at 160 degrees. I use a 2 pole three position 30 amp 250 vac rated switch on the dash panel to either select the on board power to the heater or 120/240 vac commercial power while the main AC power plug is connected to the EV. The water heat takes longer than the two resistance cab heaters I am using. In this High County (Montana), My EV was park at work while the temperature was minus 35 below. I use all three heaters which I turn on about 15 minutes before I leave. The inside cab area will get up to 80 degrees F. For the last 15 years, I only needed one heater to preheat the temperature to 80 degrees in 15 minutes before I leave. [EVDL] Resistive heater core access for S-10 conversion (EVA kit?) tips / tricks?
I have an S-10 conversion with a resistive heater core (I assume from EVA, who supplied the rest of the kit). Unfortunately, I believe the heater core may be failing. It still draws 10+ amps when I first turn it on, but the draw rapidly drops to under an amp within 15 seconds, where it used to draw 10+ amps all day. It still has plenty of air flow from the fan, but the air does not heat up at all (it used to get lukewarm). I know that if you don't have air flow over the resistive heater element it will self regulate (resistance will go up), but the fan is blowing plenty of air. I figure either the element itself is compromised somehow, or perhaps it is no longer in the airflow path (I don't know why this would be, possibly it fell down or something...) Reading a standard S10 service manual (I have a 95 model) I will need to remove the entire dash to access the (original) heater core. I was wondering if anybody who had installed the EVA resistive heater kit could tell me anything about how the resistive core is mounted, and if perhaps it would be possible to access it by pulling the blower motor off the firewall instead of removing the dash? (I'm hoping here) Tips/trick for debugging the problem short of actually removing the entire dash would also be appreciated. I have an email out to EVA asking how much it would cost to buy a replacement part, as if I remove the dash I want to be ready to replace it right away (and I'd take the opportunity to install a new amp hour gauge at the same time...) [EVDL] EVLN: Love the groovy 1967 Westinghouse Markette Electric Car r:50mi
http://www.post-gazette.com/life/my-generation/2016/02/11/Let-s-learn-from-the-past-Westinghouse-electric-car/stories/201602110013 Let's learn from the past: Westinghouse electric car February 11, 2016 Brady Smith While hybrid and electric cars are the wave of the future, their roots go back more than 100 years. During the mid-1800s, inventors first built crude electric-powered carriages. By the early 1900s, electric cars outsold all other types of cars in the U.S. until Henry Ford introduced the mass-produced gasoline-powered Model T in 1908. Production of electric vehicles declined around 1920 due to the cars’ lack of horsepower and the ready availability of gasoline. In 1966, Congress introduced early bills recommending the use of electric vehicles as a means of reducing air pollution. One year later, the Westinghouse Electric Corp. manufactured a special electric vehicle intended to be used as a “city-friendly” vehicle with a compact size. The 1967 Westinghouse Markette electric car featured 12 conventional six-volt lead-acid batteries that allowed the car to drive for 50 miles. Using a built-in battery charger featuring a retractable 12-foot cord that plugged into a standard 110-volt AC outlet, it took about eight hours to fully recharge the batteries. The two-seater car had a 25 mph cruising speed. While the car was innovative, it never made it into production during the “bigger is better” car trend of the 1960s. Visitors to the Heinz History Center’s new Visible Storage Gallery can see an original 1967 Westinghouse Markette electric car, owned by former Westinghouse CEO Donald Burnham. The company is investing in a new fleet of Paxster electric delivery vehicles, which will replace bicycles for residential areas in the larger centres. It has set aside $15 million to purchase the vehicles over the next two years and the first shipment of 50 will arrive in the middle of this year. They will each be able to transport 200kg of mail. Posties will deliver parcels and regular mail, and pick up items from people's homes. The vehicles have a top speed of 45km per hour. "The vehicles will give us extra capacity to meet the growing demand created by online shopping and give us an edge in the competitive parcel delivery market," Ashley Smout, service delivery chief operating officer for New Zealand Post, said. "They'll allow us to be more efficient and, over time, enable new and convenient services to residential customers such as parcel pick-ups, returns and re-directions. Capacity will also be freed up in our vans so couriers can concentrate on business customers." Smout said it was one of the ways New Zealand Post was improving its parcel services. "We're working on a range of options that will give people more control over when and where they receive their parcels." Smout said trials had shown the eco-vehicles were safe to use on the footpath. The vehicles will be used in areas where the terrain is suitable and where permission has been granted by the local council. New Zealand Post is now working with staff and unions on detailed plans for the national rollout. It has been predicted that the move will result in the loss of 100 jobs. New Zealand Post expects up to 2000 jobs to have gone from its operations by 2028. [EVDL] EVLN: Jaguar Land Rover "I" Trademarks Hint At Electric Variants
http://www.carscoops.com/2016/02/jaguar-land-rover-i-trademarks-hint-at.html Jaguar Land Rover "I" Trademarks Hint At Electric Variants February 11, 2016 Brad Anderson Based on three new trademarks, it seems increasingly likely that Jaguar Land Rover are intending on launching a number of new electric vehicles. AutoGuide found out that the automotive group has filed trademarks for I-Pace, I-Type and Velar, two of which could be electric models. Starting with I-Pace, it is most likely a reference to the all-electric F-Pace crossover, which has already been confirmed by Jaguar. Previously rumored to be dubbed the E-Pace, it seems apparent the British marque has opted for a BMW-like moniker instead to denote its electric powertrain. As for the I-Type, it could relate to an electric variant of the F-Type sports car. While such a model seems unlikely to launch in the near future, JLR could have filed for the trademark early and to ensure no other automakers poach it. On the other hand, an all-electric XE is much more palpable, and we'd hedge our money on this one. Last, but not least, there's the Velar. Given its use on an original Range Rover prototype and the fact that it does not fit into Jag's naming strategy, one can assume it will be used by Land Rover and could refer to a new variant, a special edition model or an entirely new vehicle. [EVDL] EVLN: Bentley to Use Porsche’s EV Sedan Platform on Its Own
http://blog.caranddriver.com/bentley-to-use-porsches-ev-sedan-platform-for-its-own-electric-vehicle/ Bentley to Use Porsche’s EV Sedan Platform for Its Own Electric Vehicle February 11, 2016 Mike Duff [image / Manufacturers http://blog.caranddriver.com/bentley-to-use-porsches-ev-sedan-platform-for-its-own-electric-vehicle/ Bentley-Porsche ] Bentley already has admitted that it will be producing plug-in hybrid versions of future models, starting with the Bentyaga. But now Crewe has apparently decided that it will be taking the next logical step and introducing fully electric models, with the first of these set to share its architecture with Porsche’s forthcoming EV sedan. Stuttgart’s uncharacteristic verbosity on the subject of its future model plans has already told us plenty about this project, including that creating the car will involve a $750-million investment, that it will be built in a new plant dubbed “factory 4.0” in Weissach, and that the company is taking on 1000 employees to make it. These are costs that, it seems likely, the company will be able to be split with Crewe, although we’re still a long way from learning where a pure electric Bentley actually will be assembled. Or even what form it will take, for that matter, although the production version of the gorgeous Bentley EXP10 Speed 6 concept is a likely candidate. (We blended Porsche’s Mission E concept with the Speed 6 concept for the image up top.) Australian website Drive seems to have gotten the scoop on this one—good on ya, cobbers—during an interview with Bentley engineering boss Rolf Frech at the launch of the Bentayga. Frech is quoted as saying, “We are currently in the stage where we are evaluating all the possibilities, but there are so many question marks behind this. I think there will be an answer within the next six months to a year to decide which direction we will go, but of course electric will be a future strategy direction for Bentley.” Much as we’re struggling with the idea of a Bentley without either an eight- or 12-cylinder sound track, we admit a pure-electric version will make sense in the not-too-distant future where internal-combustion engines are going to be banned from many major global city centers. In the same way that the Bentyaga is a bigger and more expensive sister to the Porsche Cayenne, Bentley’s first EV should be a similarly easy win in engineering terms. Back in 1881, a pair of Cincinnati brothers decided to get into the fresh produce racket. Along the way to becoming an iconic presence in the area, they invested in a 1928 Model 10 Walker Electric Truck. Sadly, and to the surprise of many, Gentile Bros. Co. folded in 2013, but that truck lives on. After a life of schlepping carrots and cabbage, it mysteriously made its way down to Palm Springs, California, where it's spent a quiet retirement working on a fine patina. Rescued from a five-year stint out in the weather by Greg Gunkel, the pickup amazingly, once again, came to life with the addition of a set of tires and a trio of 12-volt batteries. Quite possibly the last of its kind – we've searched high and low for other examples of Walker [Electric] Trucks and have found only a handful, and none like this configuration – Gunkel has offered it up on Craigslist in hopes it can find a good home in the hands of a museum or collector. It comes with a set of California "historical vehicle" license plates and a reprint of a booklet entitled "Instructions for the care and use of Model 10 light delivery Walker Electric Trucks." Asking price is a soft $40,000. Cities Share £40 Million Grant To Increase Use Of Electric Cars The UK Government has confirmed which cities/towns share its £40 million grant to implement plans that encourage the use of electric cars. London receives £13 million, Nottingham £6 million, Bristol £7 million, and Milton Keynes £9 million via the Go Ultra-Low City Scheme. The winners were chosen based on their suggested initiatives. In London, for example, street lamps in more than a dozen roads in Hackney will soon incorporate charge points. In Milton Keynes, the Electric Vehicle Enterprise Centre will provide advice and short term vehicle loans. Furthermore, 20,000 of the town's parking spaces will become free for electric vehicle owners. Free Residential Parking In Bristol For Electric Cars Drivers in Bristol will receive free residential parking for ultra-low emission vehicles, access to carpool lanes and more infrastructure to facilitate charging. A scheme to encourage the short term lease of electric cars – so that motorists understand their capabilities prior to purchase – also looks set to come to fruition. In Nottingham, electric car drivers will get charging points, discounted parking and access to bus lanes on key routes. Such initiatives could further increase ultra low emission car sales that – in 2015 - eclipsed the total of 2010 - 2014. 2015 best sellers were the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Nissan LEAF and BMW i3. “Exciting” Ideas To Increase Use Of Electric Vehicles British Government Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “These Go Ultra Low Cities have proposed exciting, innovative, ideas that will encourage drivers to choose an electric car. I want to see thousands more greener vehicles on our roads and I am proud to back this ambition with £40 million to help the UK become international pioneers of emission cutting technology”. McLoughlin added: “The UK is a world leader in the uptake of low emission vehicles, and our long-term economic plan is investing £600 million by 2020 to improve air quality, create jobs and achieve our goal of every new car and van in the UK being ultra low emission (by 2040). Go Ultra Low is a “1-stop hub for everything you need to know about ultra low emission vehicles”, its website says. Its Head, Poppy Welch, added: “We’re excited to see the innovative ideas put forward by each of the winning Go Ultra Low Cities become reality over the coming months. The £40 million investment by government - combined with funds from each winning area - will transform the roads for residents in and around the 4 Go Ultra Low Cities. With thousands more plug-in cars set to be sold, cutting running costs for motorists and helping the environment, this investment will help to put the UK at the forefront of the global ultra low emissions race.” [© motoring.co.uk] http://www.profi-forex.us/news/entry407460.html Electric Vehicles Threaten Oil Exporters Sat, 13 Feb 2016 Electric vehicles are getting more and more popular worldwide. Experts predict that electric vehicles may win up to 30% as a share in the global market of automobiles by 2030. With that being said, this is a real long-term threat to oil-exporting countries heavily dependent on their oil exports. Just a couple of years ago, electrocars used to be something exotic. Today, these electricity-driven vehicles are something common in the streets all around the globe.
