Re: [EVDL] Tesla question for Phil

If it's an "Energy Star" fridge then its not likely to be a simple timer. More
likely it is some kind of algorythm that makes calculations based on how often
and how long the door is open, possibly even taking into account humidity, etc.

Might also be some kind of frost sensor.

I know on my fridge, I will sometimes see it go into defrost twice in a week,
at other times maybe once a month, or less. Definitely not a timer.

let the defrost come on when power is restored, so you probably get another
LONG delay before it tries again. I have never understood the strip heater
timing whether it comes on once a day or 8 hours or a week. And/or what the
restart cycle is after a power outage.
Butr so far with our power outages lasting no more than a few minutes to maybe
an hour over the last ten years, I have not had the honor of watching the
defrost timing.

Musk has stated that the Cybertrucks will have onboard AC outlets, possibly

Not counting the oven, dryer, or EV charging, my house does not use more than
~3kw. If I actively manage my loads I can keep it down below 1.5kw. A large
part of the reason I'm making my house "smarter" is to allow the computer to
shift loads in order to keep draw below 1.5kw. I.E. don't allow the HP water

Actually, as long as it's not below freezing out, and the Fridge doesn't go
into defrost mode; I can run the Fridge, Freezer, HP Water Heater, Mini-Split
and my home network without going over 1.5 kw.

Here's what it looks like with all the plastic removed, including the frunk tub:

Upper right you can see the brake master cylinder (DOT4). Middle right, the
12v AGM battery, Middle left, is the "superbottle" that holds all the glycol
(G48 coolant ONLY). Lower left is the "super manifold" for the heat pump that
has the Liquid-cooled condenser, the receiver/dryer, the chiller, and all the
expansion valves and "octavalve" and pumps for the glycol. To the lower right
is the HVAC compressor. (newer ones like yours will have a black foam covering
for NVH. Far upper left you can see the 2 glycol lines for cooling the ICE
(Car/Autopilot computer) that's on the other side of the firewall, and upper
middle are the 5 R1234yf refrigerant lines that run into the cabin for HVAC.
In between this and the 2 glycol lines for the ICE is the air intake plenum.
Normally there is a big duct here that sucks air from the windshield base
plenum.

The only thing you should ever need to do under here is replace the 12v battery
or the DOT4 brake fluid. I recommend every 2 years in a humid/coastal climate,
or every 5 years otherwise. Brake fluid is highly hygroscopic. Expect 2-7
years for the 12v battery depending on climate and usage.

The G48 glycol coolant (blue stuff) never needs replacement.

I'd replace the drive unit lubricant every 5 years if I was planning on keeping
it forever. (You should probably let Tesla do this, mainly as it's unobtanium.)

Yes, I looked at that and really tried hard to see if it would work. But
it's just too big for me. It's too long for city parking and too high to
fit in parking garages. The turning radius is amazing, though. And the
range might be ok, but I would need to know what to expect at 70 mph
with heat and defrost (but since the other parameters don't work for me,
I don't need to know the range right now).

The technology certainly exists to do this. My 1992 Dodge minivan with
manual transmission easily got 30 mpg, so its basic efficiency was good.
It was rated to carry 1540 lbs, which is a lot of batteries. If
converted into an EV with a Tesla pack, it should have been able to
provide a 250-300 mile range.

But, no one wants to build such a thing. Today's "minivans" are a foot
wider, 2 feet longer, weigh half a ton more, and can carry less weight.
It seems that Americans can only get big expensive heavy vehicles.

Re: [EVDL] Tesla Y fluids etc access

2021-03-25 Thread (-Phil-) via EV
Open the frunk, you'll clearly see a big plastic panel between the
windshield and frunk "tub". This will just unsnap, so grab a side and yank
upwards.

Here's what it looks like with all the plastic removed, including the frunk
tub:

Upper right you can see the brake master cylinder (DOT4). Middle right,
the 12v AGM battery, Middle left, is the "superbottle" that holds all the
glycol (G48 coolant ONLY). Lower left is the "super manifold" for the heat
pump that has the Liquid-cooled condenser, the receiver/dryer, the chiller,
and all the expansion valves and "octavalve" and pumps for the glycol. To
the lower right is the HVAC compressor. (newer ones like yours will have a
black foam covering for NVH. Far upper left you can see the 2 glycol lines
for cooling the ICE (Car/Autopilot computer) that's on the other side of
the firewall, and upper middle are the 5 R1234yf refrigerant lines that run
into the cabin for HVAC. In between this and the 2 glycol lines for the
ICE is the air intake plenum. Normally there is a big duct here that sucks
air from the windshield base plenum.

The only thing you should ever need to do under here is replace the 12v
battery or the DOT4 brake fluid. I recommend every 2 years in a
humid/coastal climate, or every 5 years otherwise. Brake fluid is highly
hygroscopic. Expect 2-7 years for the 12v battery depending on climate
and usage.

The G48 glycol coolant (blue stuff) never needs replacement.

I'd replace the drive unit lubricant every 5 years if I was planning on
keeping it forever. (You should probably let Tesla do this, mainly as it's
unobtanium.)

Re: [EVDL] Leaf range (Tesla-Y constant humming)

2021-03-25 Thread Peri Hartman via EV
For me, replacing the Leaf battery isn't worth the cost. I'd rather put
that money into a new vehicle where I can get substantially longer
range. In other words, if I were to get 150 mile range with a new
battery (and I don't think that is possible for the 2011 Leaf), that is
still to short for out-of-town trips so would I gain little additional
value.

My best option, if my wife agrees, is to get a small van capable of at
least 250 miles with heat and defrost on. Then we could be a one car
household. A small NEV for local errands might be worthwhile, too. There
are no such vans available at the moment (or even large SUVs aside from
Tesla X, which is too expensive). The closest would be Phil's Promaster
conversions, but they are too large for my needs and (I think) not quite
enough range.

We have a 2013 Leaf with about 35K miles on it. So far, no noticeable

that option).

You are comparing maximum possible life to minimum possible life. Doesn't seem
very fair to the Leaf.

My Leaf has 6 years and 50k miles on it with 80% of the new range/capacity
remaining.

My 2011 Leaf became useless to me before 25k miles when it's range was reduced to
~60 miles. My 2013 Tesla, at ~150k miles, has about 225 miles left of it's
original 265. It is very near as useful as it was new. It can still go
essentially anywhere in the country following a chain of SuperChargers spaced at
<150 miles. I believe 3/Ys have longer lived batteries than early Ss. We
won't know for sure for a few years, but I think 200k miles is a very reasonable
expectation.

Congratulations on your very good Leaf battery luck! Though I'm not sure how
useful 80% of a small Leaf battery is.

The humming you are hearing is the glycol pumps. Anytime the contactors close,

Yeah the other EVs don't do this, but they also don't have packs that last as

The story is in error. Tesla didn't actually do that on purpose and
nearly immediately pulled the plug once green told everyone about it.

Re: [EVDL] Tesla-Y constant humming when parked in garage, wasting kwh

2021-03-25 Thread Peter Eckhoff via EV
Hello Mark,

My Model 3 does the same thing. I am told that it is being done to
condition the batteries. I notice on days when the temperature is
above 90 degrees and after a bit of time, the pump(s) will turn on to
cool the pack. The same thing happens when temps go below freezing(?)
as the batteries should be kept warmer. Also, when approaching a
Supercharger, the pack will go into a preconditioning mode so
recharging goes faster.

>From what I have read, it's all part of a positive battery management
program to prolong the life of the pack and to keep the pack healthy.
Is it wasteful? Yes/no, it depends.

Our 2011 Leaf has about 35-50 mile range, depending on weather. That's
pretty minimal, I know, but completely adequate for everything in the

My 2011 Leaf became useless to me before 25k miles when it's range was reduced to
~60 miles. My 2013 Tesla, at ~150k miles, has about 225 miles left of it's

essentially anywhere in the country following a chain of SuperChargers spaced at

won't know for sure for a few years, but I think 200k miles is a very reasonable
expectation.

Congratulations on your very good Leaf battery luck! Though I'm not sure how
useful 80% of a small Leaf battery is.

I imagine that the car is trying to take care of itself. I advise not
worrying about it. Your car has a battery that may last 200k miles.
Compare that to a Leaf with battery life as low as 20k miles.

You can monitor "vampire" range reduction which should be well under 10
miles/day.
