(see below)

 Did this aspell package get
 installed with rpm -Uvh --nodeps?

No.

The solution may be to remove aspell*
and reinstall the aspell packages built for Red Hat 7.1.

Thanks for replying. I did all the installs and upgrades with redcarpet.
I did try to uninstall and reinstall with RC all the *spell* packages. I
got an off list reply from someone with the same setup who said they
also got the same aspell/library error but spell checking was working
for them. I did try a fresh test account and spell checking was also
broken. I copied libltdl.so.3 from a RH8.0 machine to my RH7.1 and that
fixed the aspell error, but still no spell checking in Evolution. It
seems my problem was unique in some way. All upgrades and installs since
the RH7.1 to Ximian desktop install have been with RC.

At this point, my problem is resolved in the sense that I've upgraded
(actually a fresh install) to RH8.0. I was waiting for something to give
me that last little push to upgrade. RH7.1 was getting a little close to
the edge of obsolescence (I needed the spell check for that!). I plan to
run the stock RH version until I get a feel for the system and then I'll
probably Ximianize again once RH8.0 desktop is supported or I miss RC or
the latest Evolution too much. So I'm back to Evolution 1.0.8, spell
checking is working, but I already miss the improvements in Evolution
1.2.

Thanks,

John

Re: [Evolution] Evo 1.2 - spell checker missing English

2002-11-14 Thread John Weber
Hi,

Since my spell problem with evo 1.2, I've upgraded my system to RH8.0,
but I went through my system backup from my RH7.1 and I did have a
~/.gconfd/lock/ior but no ~/.gconf/%gconf-xml-backend.lock/ior. I don't
know how to tell if they were stale or not, but maybe this was the cause
of my no languages available problem. I did have the menu entry in the
composer window edit-spell check document available (not grayed out),
but it never found any mispellings.

I simply removed them then re-logged and the languages are now available.

This gconf bug has to do with NFS and/or system crashes. If you ever get weird

 all your applications, then re-login.

[Evolution] Spell checking broke after evolution 1.2 upgrade

2002-11-11 Thread John Weber
Hi,

I just did all the upgrades in the Ximian desktop channel for my RH7.1
system. Spell checking no longer works in evolution. If I go to
tools-settings-composer preferences, there are no languages listed in
the spell checer tab. I have

[jweber@ceora jweber]$ rpm -qa | grep spell
aspell-en-gb-0.33.7.1-ximian.2
aspell-0.33.7.1-ximian.2
aspell-devel-0.33.7.1-ximian.2
pspell-0.12.2-ximian.7
applix-bin-spell-base-5.00-1315
aspell-en-ca-0.33.7.1-ximian.2
gnome-spell-0.5-1.ximian.3

From the knowlege base, it says I should have aspell-en, but I don't see
it in the Ximian desktop channel. I just want american english, but I
tried adding the aspell-en-gb and aspell-en-ca to see if anything would
work.

I also get a mail component crash frequently when I try to change fonts
in evolution tools-settings-font preferences. The place where I used
to change fonts in gnomecc seems to have disappeared. After a number of
crashes, I did get the fonts changed OK.

Soory if anything is mispelled in this message

Thanks,
John

2002-10-23 Thread John Weber
Hi,

I've always liked top posting for summary replies. It's like
geology...if you want to know the past, then you dig down. Also, the
mail headers themselves are a series of top posts by the mail software.
Makes it all kind of harmonious. :) This is only my preference. I've
seen too many flame wars about this on newsgroups that don't end up
serving any purpose.

Signatures, I trim if I remember, but it seems less an issue if one top
posts because then you won't need to scroll through them unless you
forget the thread and need to reference down. If I point-by-point reply,
then I'm more likely to remember to trim unnecessary material from the
message body. I'd prefer the software to not strip the signatures.

As for removing the signature from the QRT, I have sent a couple emails

[Evolution] Evolution mail component keeps dying - but fixed

2002-05-02 Thread John Weber

Hi,

evolution 1.0.3. Mail component dies every time it tries to
send/receive. Uses all CPU for about 5 seconds and then notifies that
mail component has died. Is this the thing I saw earlier today on the
list about someone posting an attachment that crashes the mail
component? If so, someone don't do that!

I think I fixed it now after rebuilding my evolution directory bit by
bit and narrowed it down to one of the meta folders in the
~/evolution/local/Inbox directory. I deleted everything in there except
mbox and the problem seems fixed.

Hmmm. And you still have an Inbox in your folder tree? That shouldn't
 happen. :-)

I guess what you did was just removing the .ibex and .ev-summary files
and keeping the mbox and {folder,local}-metadata.xml files?

No, I removed everything except mbox. On the next evo start up it popped

Re: [Evolution] poll: patch to optionally disable HTML mail?

2002-04-29 Thread John Weber

Hi,

I like this. I get HTML mail that has attached GIFs that obscure the
text I need to see (HTML rendering problem?). If I open these mails in
pine, I can see the text (which has the real information in the first
place) fine. I would like the option of seeing the text version (if it
exits) of an email as the default with the HTML version as an attachment
to be opened as I choose.

It's still a matter of dealing with people who want to make a simple 3
line message pretty. In the worst case they'll make it a 1MB powerpoint
slide to express less than 1 KB of info. I get HTML mail that is not
spam, but in most cases there's a text equivalent with the email, but
evolution won't let me choose which I want to see by default.

If the HTML part was an attachment, I could open it if I wanted, but the
message body would show the plain text part.

Re: [Evolution] Some attachments don't show up in evolution.

2002-04-26 Thread John Weber

My original post to this thread referenced the example on the Ximian
users list. I didn't want to forward a virus to this list.

I think the answer I'm getting is that there are changes being made to
evolution that may fix this in a future version (?)

Thanks,
John

That multipart/related fix didn't make it into stable afaik either.

Several of the recent Outlook viruses have mangled MIME syntax to
trigger various Outlook bugs. Evolution is doing its best to display the
message according to the inconsistent description it's given.

There was a problem that messages composed in rich text mode in
Outlook and then auto-converted to HTML by Exchange would show up
without the attachments in Evolution (because Evolution was displaying
what the message *said* to display instead of what it *meant* to be
displayed). That's definitely fixed in Evolution 1.2 (and hacked around
in Connector 1.0), but I don't remember if the fix made it into
Evolution 1.0. But this is probably not what you're seeing if you're
  talking about virus mails.

Re: [Evolution] Some attachments don't show up in evolution.

2002-04-26 Thread John Weber

Well, I guess 0x0 IS hard to see :) I'm trying to understand why pine
can see these attachments OK. Not that it matters much, but I get
curious. FYI pine list these attachments as (possibly from a different
virus email than the one I mentioned)...

   1 ~4 lines Text/HTML
   2 98 KB Audio/X-WAV
   3 0 lines Text/PLAIN
   48.8 KB Application/OCTET-STREAM (Name: WATERMRK.JPG)

While evolution tells me nothing (unless I read the source).

Thanks for the info and I'm not too worried about it.

Is there a stand alone utility to decode/save these if I were to save
the attachment segments from the message source?

John

evolution doesn't show a save widget for that part, this is same way it
treats inline images. This is a very reasonable way to interpret this
 intentionally broken message.

One way I can think of that might improve the situation is to check the
mime type of the part and compare it to the mime type that gtkhtml
requests on that stream, see the difference and add the the save part
widget since it doesn't match. On the other hand I'm not sure if it is
 really worth the effort.

[Evolution] Some attachments don't show up in evolution.

2002-04-25 Thread John Weber

Hi,

I curious as to why some attachments (seems to be the virus ones on the
Ximian users list) don't show up in evolution (1.0.3). e.g., on the
Ximian users list dated Yesterday 10:15 PM from
[EMAIL PROTECTED], subject Re:eager to see you.

The message list shows a paper clip indicating an attachment, but the
message view shows nothing in the message body (normal display). In view
source mode there's clearly at least one encoded attachment. Also, pine
and kmail show these attachments and allow me to save them to disk.
Mozilla mail (Mozilla 0.9.9 Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US;
rv:0.9.9) Gecko/20020326) also seems to have problems showing these
attachments.

It makes me wonder what other attachments may fail to show up, maybe
important ones I need to see or save.

Thanks,
John

[Evolution] spell check broken

2002-03-27 Thread John Weber

Hi,

I've done all the upgrades on RH7.1 using red-carpet on the RH7.1 and
Ximian desktop channels and I noticed that spell check isn't working in
evolution anymore. It seems to work OK in abiword. Do evo and abiword
both use the same spell check back end? Anybody else notice this? I no
longer get the instant spell check and the Edit-Spell Check Document is
grayed out.

Thanks,

OK. I fixed it. I went into GCC (1.5.9) and went to Advanced-File Types
and Programs. I found the image/jpeg entry and changed the default
action from Use Viewer to Open With Application. I restarted
evolution and it works. I tried to break it again by setting it back to
Use Viewer, but it won't break. (?)

These long lists of mime types could really use a search engine!
Something like the search in redcarpet.

What I've noticed is that mail which has an applicable filter to put it

mail that is destined for inbox (no filter applies) takes roughly 30
seconds. Anybody know why or how to fix this?

Thanks

From an earlier posting that worked for me...
create a script e.g. evomail

#! /bin/bsh
/usr/bin/evolution --no-splash mailto:$1;

Call this script from File - Preferences - Applications - E-mail
client.

Re: [Evolution] steaming hot software, fresh from the Ximian(tm)Software Bakery

2001-12-07 Thread John Weber

Hi,

I filed a bug a while back regarding non-alphabetic characters in a
search string. This got marked as a repeat of

16227 Body contains seems to want a regexp

It still seems broken. I did a Body or subject contains search for
16627 in the folder containing this message and got no matches. Also
e.g. a dash or underscore in a string will return no matches. I'm
running 1.0.0.99 on RH7.1.

Re: [Evolution] command line or mailto: support

2001-11-03 Thread John Weber

Hi,

Either I've never gotten this to work or I don't understand how it's
supposed to work. My understanding is that if this is working and I
click on a link of the form Mailto:somebody@somwhere; in mozilla, I
should get an evolution compose window with the To: already filled out
with somebody@somewhere and not get the mozilla mail compose window,
correct?

I always get the mozilla window and I've tried the suggestions from this
thread and a previous one on this list. I'm using RH7.1 with the latest
ximian gnome, gnomecc 1.5.9, almost the latest evo snaps.

Thanks, John

[Evolution] search for numeric string in message body

2001-11-02 Thread John Weber

This may be related to bug 11647.

If I search for a numeric string in either Body or subject contains or
Body contains for a string that is or contains numeric characters, the
search fails. It will return matches for the subject in the Body or
subject contains case.

I noticed this in my redhat folder where I keep all the RHBAs and RHSAs
and did a search for 7.2. I went to a message that had 7.2 in it and
entered (cut and paste) the 7.2 from the body into the search and did
searches on both subject and body and then body only. The first case
returned 1 message with 7.2 in the subject. The message that I did the
cut and paste from briefly showed the 7.2 string highlighted as a seach
match does, but then the message disappeared. Similarly, a search for
i386 returns no matched.

I have RH7.1. I noticed this also in 200110291518 and I'm now seeing
this also on 200111021518.

[Evolution] Saving a message to finish later (Draft?)

2001-10-26 Thread John Weber

Hi,

When I'm composing a message and need to stash it away to finish later,
what's the way to do this? I tried file-Save draft and it put the
message into the draft folder, but I can't figure out how to reopen it
for editing. I can move it to the sent folder and then I can edit-Edit
as New message..., but this seems the long way around. It gives me an
error if I try the edit-Edit as New message... directly from the
draft folder. You may only resend messages in the Sent folder

Also the message gets HTMLized when I put it in the draft folder. I have
all my settings set for plain text and that's the way it's been sending
my mail.

 - Standard Unix mbox spools will create a a subtree of folder(s) in the
folder-tree view and leave messages there. This is for people who want
to share mbox folders between mail clients. So for example you could
tell evolution to read an mbox spool such as /home/user/Mail/inbox
that might actually be part of Balsa, KMail, mutt, pine, etc

 - Local Delivery is if you want Evolution to download mail from say
/var/spool/mail/user and filter it into your various other folders
(assuming you have filters setup, otherwise it delivers them to Inbox).

  2. What is Mail-dir format mail directories ?

If you don't know, you probably don't have it :-)

Maildir is the mail format that QMail uses, I think mutt also has
 support for it.

I'm seeing some things when printing (and previewing) calendar views.

1. Text overflows boundaries in any view. I suspect this may be related
to some of the gtkHTML bugs already reported. Those have been for
printing mail, but I see essentially the same thing in calendar
printing.

2. When printing (or preview) Selected Week, it mangles what I see on
screen for Week View (not work week). The week View shows 2 columns
of days and I have it set so Sat Sun share the upper left box split
horizontally. Then Mon Tues are the 2nd and 3rd boxes down in the 1st
column and Wed-Fri are the second column.

In print (and preview), the upper left half box formerly Sat, is blank,
Sun Mon are the 2nd 3rd boxes down. Fri has come up from the bottom
box 2nd col and Tues from bottom box 1st col to overwrite each other in
top box 2nd col. Wed Thur are now the 2nd and 3rd boxes, 2nd col.

RH7.1, evolution snap 200110251553.

Re: [Evolution] Lost Contacts

2001-10-25 Thread John Weber

Rh7.1 I had similar experience. Went back to the evolution on the gnome
desktop channel (seems like a lot of broken stuff in the last few snaps)
and contacts was blank. A sub-folder of contacts did show OK but the
main contacts folder was blank. I went back to snap 200110181519 ( a
version I particularly enjoyed) and contacts is OK. John

well.. except my contacts is blank. The db _is_ in
evolution/local/Contacts and it has the content in there, it just wont
show. If _did_ previously show under B6 before I got the snapshot that
segfaults. Ideas on how to get it back

[Evolution] button bar goes blank and no menus in folder bar

2001-10-24 Thread John Weber

snap 200110240757 RH7.1

The horizontal button bar goes blank after changing mail folders. It
shows up at first, but blanks and stays blank after the first folder
change.

I also get no menus when right clicking on a folder in the folder bar.

I downgraded to 200110231929 and these problems went away.

Re: [Evolution] Per-folder feature idea (that would just happen tofit me perfectly :-)

2001-10-23 Thread John Weber

Yeah. This would take care of the ambiguities I was mentioning in the
thread From field with replies from last Friday. John
(I almost sent this one with the wrong From:)

 Hi all,

The need is easy to explain: My mailing lists email address is different
from my personal email address. Whenever I am posting/replying to a
mailing list I have to remember to select the right From address. If I
forget the mail can bounce (or I've just increased the spam that goes to
 my personal email address).

The solution is elegant: PER-FOLDER DEFAULT EMAIL ADDRESSES. For example
if I am in the folder evolution and either post or reply to a new
message my [EMAIL PROTECTED] email address could be set as the
default. A good place for the selection item could be a right mouse
click on a particular folder called Default Account...

For those of us that sort their mail using folders and use more than one
email address I think this could be a killer feature. What do you all
 think?

Re: [Evolution] From field with replies

2001-10-19 Thread John Weber

OK. This info helps me narrow down the behavior I think is strange. If I
reply to a message where the To: field is one of my identities in the
mail settings, then the From: will match that. What I notice is that if
I'm replying and the To: is not one of my identities (e.g. the To: field
is this mailing list), then it's not using my default ID but a different
one that happens to be first in the list of 4 accounts, default is last.
This account is also disabled. So it seems to me to make more sense to
use the default ID in this case instead of another one on the list. If
it does use the first on the list, there should be an easy way of
reordering them. Does this mean that default account only applies to new
messages? What other attributes (if any) does the 'default' account have
except for the From: on new messages?

Next question. Does the status 'enabled' or 'disabled' just turn on or
off receiving mail or does it affect other things?

Thanks, John

What I have noticed is that is appears based on the address the message
  was sent to.

Yes, this is correct. If someone sends mail to your [EMAIL PROTECTED]
address, your reply will have that in the From:, even if your default
 account is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

New messages always use your default identity, unless otherwise
 specified.

[Evolution] mail recipients in compose suggestion

2001-09-19 Thread John Weber

Hi,
When composing a new email, I have the recipient fields To:, Cc:, and
Bcc:. Each of these buttons brings up the same addressbook menu which
lets me choose any of these fields again. Instead have a separate
addressbook button and use these buttons to change the category (To:,
Cc, Bcc:) with a drop down menu. Like Mozilla.
Thanks, John

Re: [Evolution] libgtkhtml

I had this error in red carpet when trying to do all the upgrades today.
I had apparent success by installing the evolution snaps and then
individually selecting all the desktop upgrades. Red carpet didn't
complain about that. John

[Evolution] Slow and where's documentation

2001-09-17 Thread John Weber

Hi,
I recently started using the evolution daily snapshots and now I can't
find a user manual. It seems it was accessible in the help menu on the
main release. Is there a user manual available somewhere? I looked
around on Ximian web site but found none.

I'm also curious as to why evolution takes a long time to start up.
About 10 secs for each component to highlight in the startup window, and
after that the different components take a similar amount of time to
open on first use. The New Messages window always takes a long time to
open. I never see any disk or CPU usage during the wait, so what is it
doing?

[Evolution] themes

2001-09-17 Thread John Weber

Will evolution support themes? I've been using mozilla mail and I like the
skypilot theme because it has darker shades, especially the backgrounds. Is
there a way to set the background color in evolution? White backgrounds are so
bright.

ORBIT problems, probably. I notice that, when Evolution gets that slow, if I
 do (as root):

 (close Evo)
 killev
 oaf-slay
 rm -rf /tmp/orbit-(my-user-name)

Then Evo speeds up TREMENDOUSLY. Both start up, and widow openings - new
 message, reply, etc.
I know that if I *don't* periodically do this, Evo gets very slow.
Especially if I leave X, and then come back into X.

Thanks,
This worked to speed things up again. I've crashed evolution several times
since, but no slow down yet.
