RE: Move Server questions

2001-08-16 Thread Couch, Nate

In fact, the server name is NOT changed. The SITE name is changed though as
the databases are modified to reflect the new SITE location. I have done a
couple of these moves using the Move Server Wizard (same domain in one case
and different domains in the other). If you've read the Move Server Wizard
documentation and follow it's instructions you should have no problem. The
key point, as I see it, is to disconnect the site/server (Site/X.400 and DR
Connectors)you are moving from the rest of the ORG. As long as the two
sites could communicate before the move you should be good to go.

You are correct about the Outlook/Exchange client side. Each client has a
profile pointing to the original Site/Server address. The only thing I had
to do here was make sure the users knew to do the Check Name routine after
the move and replication had occurred. I did encounter one other problem
where users had added Public Folder shortcuts to their Outlook Bar and after
the move they had to have their permissions re-established, but that was
relatively easy to fix.

I thought Ed already replied? I've been on the desktop side of the house
for one server move, 5 years ago, and we are still on the same (annoying)
cluster so I haven't done this on the LAN side at all. We did NOT have to
recreate any profiles except for one bozo who tried to dial up 2 years later
and lo and behold the server was gone by then.

Are you following Ed's Method?

Subject: Move Server questions

I will performing my first Move Server Wizard (multi-server site to
multi-server site)in the next month or so and I have a couple questions. I
was reading some TechNet docs and one of them specifically talks about
moving from site to site. The author says that the client won't have to
recreate their profile because the server name isn't changing. But in my
lab tests this was not the case; Outlook was unable to connect and gave some
warning about the mailbox being unavailable. I redid the Check Name in the
profile and then it was fine, but it still required manual intervention. I
read in another doc somewhere that you WOULD have to recreate the profile.
Does anyone know for sure?

Also, the same TechNet article recommends removing the Site and DR
connectors. I don't want to do that because then I would lose all of my
inter-site members in each DL, not to mention lots of NDRs, etc. But I read
another article that said to leave the connectors intact (but obviously not
hosted on the server being moved). My lab tests worked fine with the
connectors left in place. Why would he be recommending to do that in the
first place?

Comments, complaints, suggestions?

Scott.

 Hi All

 Exchange 5.5 sp4, Mimesweeper4.1

When I send an email to a particular address, it bounces with:

Unable to deliver to destination domain Can't interpret host name, or
 non-existent host

If I send to the same address from another company I do not have a
problem. I have checked DNS and can resolve the domain air-rite.com.au
as well telnet port 25 to the ip address

This is the error I receive on the NDR:

I have tried to send to another recipient and have the same problem.
Technet did not produce any information on the above errors

 Any pointers would be appreciated

You need to configure your server to send only plain text to

RE: ASCII messages

2001-08-16 Thread Thomas Di Nardo

Global Settings\Internet Message Formats\Right click\New-Domain, or
create a custom contact and set the advanced email properties to plain
text only. The first method may be better. If you do the second method,
you might want to create a separate OU; I find it easier to remember
where the oddball domains are kept when their in a separate OU.

You can configure the mailbox settings for IMAP4 and POP3 for a
plaintext default (exchange advanced\protocol settings), but I don't
believe you can do it as a default for the entire mailbox (though I
could be wrong).

Don't know if this would work, but instead of checking on the TO field,
have them check on Message Header field instead. I've had to switch

Ok, this is a problem we've run into here after moving from our Old NT
4.0/Exchange 5.5 Domain to our new Windows 2000 ADS and Exchange 2000
domains.

A user has multiple inbound SMTP address, I've setup the SMTP Address in
the recipient policies for all the inbound SMTP address we are using.
I've defined the address under the user account, i.e.
[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED],
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Now the problem, the user has rules setup to sort his mail based on the
smtp TO address. IE mail sent to the hostmaster address is sorted to a
folder and so on. This is so his normal mail does not become cluttered
with the traffic mail. This worked fine under NT 4.0 and Exchange 5.5.
But since the move to Exchange 2000 and Windows 2000 ADS the rules only
see the address as the username. If you look at the headers for the
mail you can see the smtp address it was sent to listed, but the rules
do not affect the mail. And this problem is not only with Outlook, we
use Kana for our support center and when kana opens the mail box to pull
down the mail it to only sees mail as addressed to the default address
for the box, not any of the support address we provide.

I've got a call into MS right now, and we've tried some basic stuff and
it's not worked, but while I wait to hear back from them, I thought I
would try this list. I've searched the archives and all the on-line
resources until I'm blue in the face. But I've had no luck in finding
anything else like this.

Thanks for any replies or pointers you could provide.

But he also mentioned users and client. There is no way a user could
delete their entire mailbox, right? All the messages in it, yes, but not the

You cannot recover an entire mailbox. That's what you asked, though I don't
think it's what you mean. Search TechNet for DumpsterAlwaysOn. This is

It's not server-side. There is a hidden folder in the client that, by
default, is enabled and is accessed by highlighting the Deleted Items folder
and selecting Tools:Recover Items. There is an optional reg key for it as
well.

The other alternative is to do a restore of the last backup to a spare
server and copy the mailbox to a PST.

Folks,

I can't get E2K SP1 to run in the following configuration:

Windows 2000 Advanced Server with SP2 with clustering in a child domain.
Route domain exists on a different subnet with a root GC server on thee
local subnet. Only domain controllers on the local subnet have full
access
to the DCs on the remote subnet. The Schema master function has been
transferred to the local route GC server. There are three full exchange
administrators - the root administrator, the child administrator and the
cluster admin. Whichever account is used the update will not run
claiming
insufficient permissions or lack of access to AD.

Do I need direct access to any Operation Master functions (other than
Schema
Master which is already assigned to a local server)?

Is there anything else I might have overlooked?

The issue with the restore is that it does NOT create the key, not that it
leaves the key there.

Hello,

I've seen this happen in the lab (corrupt DB after restore) when Virus
Protection was running, or Circular logging was enabled. With Arcserve my
problem was usually to manually remove the Restore in progress key.

In the lab, and for real, I've had the best luck with offline backup,
restore just the 3 edbs, and ISInteg -patch .

We're moving to Veritas 8.6 this week... thanks for the heads up.

Richard,

We replaced the drives and restored from a backup. Old HP LCII machines
would require external cages/etc. and all we had was hot-swap disks, RAID5,
and 3 slots in a cage. IDR is a function of completely backing up the NT
Server and restoring it to identical hardware, even though the disks are
larger. It's supposed to be faster - hah! right!

Yup. Tried quite a few TechNet articles regarding log files. What happened
is that the database restored and was inconsistent. We don't know why and
neither does PSS. We tried one restore using Backup Exec and had a 2nd
backup using NT Backup for which we did a restore. It ALSO did not write the
'restore in progress' key. It's very odd. So, it's not a backup software
issue. The database seemed mildly corrupted, but it's the inconsistent
database vs. log files from the backup that bother me.

Since the server is a duplicate of the original (same SIDs, security, name,
etc.), it should work fine. We had no authentication issues when logging in
and nothing was in the logs. I still have log files if you want me to post
any of them.

Nope. We did not revert to a previous backup. We needed the data as/is. We
spent a total of 21 hours (9:30AM Sunday morning to 6:00AM Monday morning)
performing both Veritas IDR and full restores as well as regular old NT
Backup restores. We then did what I mentioned in the first post which is run
ESEUTIL followed by ISINTEG -fix, then -patch. The IS came up, then we had
to fix the MTA by recreating it from scratch. All is fine now, but I don't
want this to happen again.

Larry,

Could you clarify the configuration. By the looks of things this is Exchange
5.5 but how did you implement the disk upgrade? Was this just the database
disks and did you have old and new alongside so you could move stores using
the performance monitor or did you replace the drives and simply restore
from a backup? Was the OS on the same disks and is this where Intelligent
Disaster Recovery comes in?

Anyway, I'm sure your aware of the two hits in TechNet relating to
4294966768. These imply the problem is with missing log files and you have
the suggestion of getting rid of them. I'm wondering if you've got a
permissions issue, or perhaps the server (having been rebuilt) isn't
authenticating to the domain properly.

As this is a BE backup you could always try a restore with NTbackup.

Would it be safe to assume you've reverted to the pre upgrade configuration?
If so, then on the next attempt it might be better to shut down Exchange
prior to backup giving you a clean offline backup.

regards,
Richard Dann

Hi all! It's been a while since I've asked for assistance, but this one's
got us AND PSS stumped.

This past Sunday, we decided to increase disk space on our Exchange server
by swapping disk drives out with larger ones. We went from an 8 gig volume
to an 18 gig (3 9-gig drives/RAID5). All worked well. We used Veritas Backup
Exec version 8.5 with the Exchange agent and Intelligent Disaster Recovery
option. This seemed to backup and restore just fine. However, the IS did NOT
come up. Had service specific error 4294966768 when it tried to start. Tried
running ESEUTIL /r, but that did nothing. We tried on our own to do ESEUTIL
/P which did work, but then the MTA did not start - inconsistent and a
Windows NT internal error 2140 occurred. We restored all over again with PSS
helping us. They had us do exactly what we did prior, but we added ISINTEG
-fix to both the priv and

I used to have a mailbox on 5.5, then I moved the box to an ex2000 box in

Should there be a replica of it on the 2000 box, or is that not necessary?

Global Settings\Internet Message Formats\Right click\New-Domain, or
create a custom contact and set the advanced email properties to plain
text only. The first method may be better. If you do the second method,
you might want to create a separate OU; I find it easier to remember
where the oddball domains are kept when their in a separate OU.

You can configure the mailbox settings for IMAP4 and POP3 for a
plaintext default (exchange advanced\protocol settings), but I don't
believe you can do it as a default for the entire mailbox (though I
could be wrong).

You need to configure your server to send only plain text to
internet.com. If your default global setting is set to send both HTML

for internet.com, or create a custom contact and configure it for plain

Because there is something wrong with the setup of the internet.com

It is a royal pain in the a$$. I have the same problem as you. I do not
have the problem on other mailing lists running the same list software.

RE: ASCII messages

2001-08-16 Thread Thomas Di Nardo

That's why you're not having a problem.

This is only an issue on E2K boxes. I never had an issue on 5.5 either.
The problem is the default global setting in E2K is to send all traffic
as both HTML and plaintext. For whatever reason, the listserve
interprets that type of message as containing an attachment, and kicks
it back.

Tom.

RE: Is their away to recover a users exchange folders after theydeletethem?

2001-08-16 Thread butyoda

Ed is correct, I am just looking for a way to be able to recover any folders
contents in case a users totally deletes them from their outlook client,
meaning emptying the deleted items folder, so if I got this right then, as
long as I have a nice long time set on the server for retention period,
period I can recover items for a user who has emptied their deleted items
folder?? But if I want to recover other folders I have to go to each clients
workstation and do the Dumpsteralways on reg config ?? But I thought anytime
you delete an item it goes to the deleted item folder anyhow?? So in which
scenario would it be useful to edit this registry setting??? Thanks

But he also mentioned users and client. There is no way a user could
delete their entire mailbox, right? All the messages in it, yes, but not the
mailbox itself, right? So long as the mail box still exists he should be
able to recover all the messages (assuming he hasn't passed the retention
time)

It's not server-side. There is a hidden folder in the client that, by
default, is enabled and is accessed by highlighting the Deleted Items folder
and selecting Tools:Recover Items. There is an optional reg key for it as
well.

The other alternative is to do a restore of the last backup to a spare
server and copy the mailbox to a PST.

Users who have a full mapi client, such as outlook 2000, using corp
workgroup setup with exchange folders only, not using pst files, if they
delete their mail, then empty their deleted folders, is their away to
set up exchange to catch this mail and hold it in a deleted folder
temporarily in case they need it, I thought I saw this settting
 somewhere.. Thanks

How does synchronization work?

2001-08-16 Thread Joe Pochedley

Can somebody explain to me what steps Outlook and Exchange take when
performing a synchronization?

Here's the scenario, Outlook 2000 SP1 client, Exchange 5.5 SP4 server...
User has an Inbox with 4400+ items, about 6 megs worth of mail... Inbox
synchronizes for offline use in about 30 seconds
Same user has a Sent Items folder with 2100+ items, but about 200 megs worth
of stuff (being polite, he's got big attachments)... Takes about half an
hour to synchronize, every time..

Does Outlook have to compare each item in the folder every time it
synchronizes? I'm assuming that it does and that's why it takes half an
hour to synchronize (over a 384K WAN connection) every time the user needs
to synch Outlook? If that's the case, wouldn't it be smarter for Outlook to
keep some kind of change log while offline to assist in synchronizing only
those items that have changed, and leaving other items alone?

I'm not really looking for help here because I know the answer is (most
likely) to have the user delete his larger sent items, but I'd like to
provide a good explanation of if / why it takes so long every single time...

Thanks in advance.

Joe Pochedley

RE: Is their away to recover a users exchange folders after theydeletethem?

2001-08-16 Thread Thomas Di Nardo

You need the reg hack on any workstation you want to use. That is to
say, if YOU want to recover the deleted items for your users, you only
need the hack on YOUR machine. If you want to give your users this
ability, you need to push the hack to all workstations.

Ed is correct, I am just looking for a way to be able to recover any
folders
contents in case a users totally deletes them from their outlook client,
meaning emptying the deleted items folder, so if I got this right then,
as
long as I have a nice long time set on the server for retention period,
period I can recover items for a user who has emptied their deleted
items
folder?? But if I want to recover other folders I have to go to each
clients
workstation and do the Dumpsteralways on reg config ?? But I thought
anytime
you delete an item it goes to the deleted item folder anyhow?? So in
which
scenario would it be useful to edit this registry setting??? Thanks

But he also mentioned users and client. There is no way a user could
delete their entire mailbox, right? All the messages in it, yes, but not
the
mailbox itself, right? So long as the mail box still exists he should be
able to recover all the messages (assuming he hasn't passed the
retention
time)

Use the option on the Rules Wizard to export the rules to an .rwz file.
You can later import it.

If you're using POP or IMAP, then they certainly are, but if
you're using
MAPI, they may well be server-side.

Now why do you force all your users to keep their mail on their

you get a box popping up when opening Rules Wizard, select
Server. When
they get a new box, set up the mail profile again and Rules

Moving a user to a different server using Move Mailbox keeps

I'm not sure if this would be the same as the Cant delete a public folder
thread, but I would think it would be along the same lines...
Public folder was housed on server A
Server A was joined to existing site server B
Server A crashed
Server A rebuilt and got info from Server B
Public Folder shows up in the Public Folder list, but gives the below
message when we try to access it:

Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Outlook could not access the
specified folder location. The contents of this public folder are currently
unavailable. Either the Microsoft Exchange Server computer servicing this
public folder is down or the public folder has not been replicated to this
site. See your administrator.

I'm not sure how to get rid of this. Delete wont work, and I ran the
consistency checker on it hoping it would clear up but its still there.

Any tips, links, guidance?
Thanks!

RE: Outlook Profile Generator

2001-08-16 Thread Ed Crowley

That's really a semantic argument at best. But it's definitely a fact that
Outlook isn't the thing that's doing the mailbox creating.

Mail delivery to that mailbox activates the mailbox as well and makes it
visible in the ESM :)

Well, to be fair, mailboxes aren't *activated* in E2K until the user logs
onto them the first time. But they're definitely already created.

Rant on, brother.

Excuse me??? A mailbox is created in Xadmin. A profile for the mailbox
is created through Outlook or any other mail client.

In other words, YOU would be WRONG!

Think before you leap!

Actually, it does. Mailbox are not really created until you log into
them using Outlook for the first time.

Hi,

Is there a way to have Outlook load balance out the mailboxes between
the two new servers? Meaning that when Outlook rehoming the profiles..

We currently have profile generator and one server in our site. What we
are going to is two new servers in our site...

Thanks for all the help.

Subject: Opening Outlook with only one PST Files

I have a client with Exchange server 5.5 with sp 4.0 on a NT server.
Every time this client opens her Outlook she two outlook files appear.
She was only configured to run exchange client and not internet mail. I
tried to close one of the PST files (off line one!!!), but I can not??
I just want to open one PST file from the exchange server, when she
opens Outlook 2000. Also her inbox (on her off line PST file) is
receiving her mail from the exchange server. The Inbox on the exchange
PST is not receiving any mail. I want her exchange mail box (exchange
PST file) to receive all the mail.

Thank You
