RE: Move Server questions
In fact, the server name is NOT changed. The SITE name is changed though as the databases are modified to reflect the new SITE location. I have done a couple of these moves using the Move Server Wizard (same domain in one case and different domains in the other). If you've read the Move Server Wizard documentation and follow it's instructions you should have no problem. The key point, as I see it, is to disconnect the site/server (Site/X.400 and DR Connectors)you are moving from the rest of the ORG. As long as the two sites could communicate before the move you should be good to go. You are correct about the Outlook/Exchange client side. Each client has a profile pointing to the original Site/Server address. The only thing I had to do here was make sure the users knew to do the Check Name routine after the move and replication had occurred. I did encounter one other problem where users had added Public Folder shortcuts to their Outlook Bar and after the move they had to have their permissions re-established, but that was relatively easy to fix. I was reading some TechNet docs and one of them specifically talks about moving from site to site. The author says that the client won't have to recreate their profile because the server name isn't changing. But in my lab tests this was not the case; Outlook was unable to connect and gave some warning about the mailbox being unavailable. I redid the Check Name in the profile and then it was fine, but it still required manual intervention. I read in another doc somewhere that you WOULD have to recreate the profile. Does anyone know for sure? Also, the same TechNet article recommends removing the Site and DR connectors. I don't want to do that because then I would lose all of my inter-site members in each DL, not to mention lots of NDRs, etc. But I read another article that said to leave the connectors intact (but obviously not hosted on the server being moved). My lab tests worked fine with the connectors left in place. Why would he be recommending to do that in the first place? Comments, complaints, suggestions? Don't know if this would work, but instead of checking on the TO field, have them check on Message Header field instead. Ok, this is a problem we've run into here after moving from our Old NT 4.0/Exchange 5.5 Domain to our new Windows 2000 ADS and Exchange 2000 domains. A user has multiple inbound SMTP address, I've setup the SMTP Address in the recipient policies for all the inbound SMTP address we are using. I've defined the address under the user account, i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Now the problem, the user has rules setup to sort his mail based on the smtp TO address. IE mail sent to the hostmaster address is sorted to a folder and so on. This is so his normal mail does not become cluttered with the traffic mail. This worked fine under NT 4.0 and Exchange 5.5. But since the move to Exchange 2000 and Windows 2000 ADS the rules only see the address as the username. If you look at the headers for the mail you can see the smtp address it was sent to listed, but the rules do not affect the mail. And this problem is not only with Outlook, we use Kana for our support center and when kana opens the mail box to pull down the mail it to only sees mail as addressed to the default address for the box, not any of the support address we provide. I've got a call into MS right now, and we've tried some basic stuff and it's not worked, but while I wait to hear back from them, I thought I would try this list. I've searched the archives and all the on-line resources until I'm blue in the face. But I've had no luck in finding anything else like this. Thanks for any replies or pointers you could provide. RE: Exchange-aware restores not writing 'restore in progress' reg key
Gotcha, Brent. Sounds like an offline backup or 'Ghosting' would have solved my problem. The issue with the restore is that it does NOT create the key, not that it leaves the key there. With Arcserve my problem was usually to manually remove the Restore in progress key. In the lab, and for real, I've had the best luck with offline backup, restore just the 3 edbs, and ISInteg -patch . We're moving to Veritas 8.6 this week... thanks for the heads up. Brent -Original Message- From: LSeltzer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2001 1:58 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Exchange-aware restores not writing 'restore in progress' reg key Richard, We replaced the drives and restored from a backup. Old HP LCII machines would require external cages/etc. and all we had was hot-swap disks, RAID5, and 3 slots in a cage. IDR is a function of completely backing up the NT Server and restoring it to identical hardware, even though the disks are larger. It's supposed to be faster - hah! right! Yup. Tried quite a few TechNet articles regarding log files. What happened is that the database restored and was inconsistent. We don't know why and neither does PSS. We tried one restore using Backup Exec and had a 2nd backup using NT Backup for which we did a restore. It ALSO did not write the 'restore in progress' key. It's very odd. So, it's not a backup software issue. The database seemed mildly corrupted, but it's the inconsistent database vs. log files from the backup that bother me. Since the server is a duplicate of the original (same SIDs, security, name, etc.), it should work fine. We had no authentication issues when logging in and nothing was in the logs. I still have log files if you want me to post any of them. Nope. We did not revert to a previous backup. We needed the data as/is. We spent a total of 21 hours (9:30AM Sunday morning to 6:00AM Monday morning) performing both Veritas IDR and full restores as well as regular old NT Backup restores. We then did what I mentioned in the first post which is run ESEUTIL followed by ISINTEG -fix, then -patch. The IS came up, then we had to fix the MTA by recreating it from scratch. All is fine now, but I don't want this to happen again. By the looks of things this is Exchange 5.5 but how did you implement the disk upgrade? Was this just the database disks and did you have old and new alongside so you could move stores using the performance monitor or did you replace the drives and simply restore from a backup? Was the OS on the same disks and is this where Intelligent Disaster Recovery comes in? Anyway, I'm sure your aware of the two hits in TechNet relating to 4294966768. These imply the problem is with missing log files and you have the suggestion of getting rid of them. I'm wondering if you've got a permissions issue, or perhaps the server (having been rebuilt) isn't authenticating to the domain properly. As this is a BE backup you could always try a restore with NTbackup. Would it be safe to assume you've reverted to the pre upgrade configuration? If so, then on the next attempt it might be better to shut down Exchange prior to backup giving you a clean offline backup. regards, Richard Dann -Original Message- From: LSeltzer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 14 August 2001 16:53 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange-aware restores not writing 'restore in progress' reg key Hi all! All worked well. We used Veritas Backup Exec version 8.5 with the Exchange agent and Intelligent Disaster Recovery option. This seemed to backup and restore just fine. However, the IS did NOT come up. Had service specific error 4294966768 when it tried to start. Tried running ESEUTIL /r, but that did nothing. We tried on our own to do ESEUTIL /P which did work, but then the MTA did not start - inconsistent and a Windows NT internal error 2140 occurred. We restored all over again with PSS helping us. That's why you're not having a problem. This is only an issue on E2K boxes. I never had an issue on 5.5 either. The problem is the default global setting in E2K is to send all traffic as both HTML and plaintext. How does synchronization work?
Can somebody explain to me what steps Outlook and Exchange take when performing a synchronization? Here's the scenario, Outlook 2000 SP1 client, Exchange 5.5 SP4 server... User has an Inbox with 4400+ items, about 6 megs worth of mail... Inbox synchronizes for offline use in about 30 seconds Same user has a Sent Items folder with 2100+ items, but about 200 megs worth of stuff (being polite, he's got big attachments)... Takes about half an hour to synchronize, every time.. Does Outlook have to compare each item in the folder every time it synchronizes? I'm assuming that it does and that's why it takes half an hour to synchronize (over a 384K WAN connection) every time the user needs to synch Outlook? If that's the case, wouldn't it be smarter for Outlook to keep some kind of change log while offline to assist in synchronizing only those items that have changed, and leaving other items alone? I'm not really looking for help here because I know the answer is (most likely) to have the user delete his larger sent items, but I'd like to provide a good explanation of if / why it takes so long every single time... Thanks in advance. You need the reg hack on any workstation you want to use. That is to say, if YOU want to recover the deleted items for your users, you only need the hack on YOUR machine. If you want to give your users this ability, you need to push the hack to all workstations. ADC Question
Once you've upgraded from Exchange 5.5 to 2000, do you leave the ADC in place? Or, once the upgrade is complete, has it outlived its usefulness? Public folder was housed on server A Server A was joined to existing site server B Server A crashed Server A rebuilt and got info from Server B Public Folder shows up in the Public Folder list, but gives the below message when we try to access it: Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Outlook could not access the specified folder location. The contents of this public folder are currently unavailable. Either the Microsoft Exchange Server computer servicing this public folder is down or the public folder has not been replicated to this site. See your administrator. I'm not sure how to get rid of this. Delete wont work, and I ran the consistency checker on it hoping it would clear up but its still there. Any tips, links, guidance? Thanks! RE: ASCII messages
And they don't even return the subject of the message so I can figure out which one to resend. This very message happens to be one I created from scratch because it was bounced by internet.com for having an attachment. The message I previously sent was a plain text message. The next message you get from me in this thread will also be one I'm recreating from scratch for the exact same reason. I do have a problem with them not supplying a bit more useful error message for debugging. It took me the better part of a week to figure out what the cause was because the error message was useless (your message was rejected because it contained an attachment and I know there was no attachment), and getting any response at all from the listadmin was impossible. A useful error message or a response from the listadmin would easily solve most people's gripes. My $.02.
