Multiple updaters for a DL

2002-09-12 Thread Murray Alexander

In the hope that I'm actually contributing something useful, because I
_still_ can't figure out how to get at the archives...

EX5.5 SP3, NT4 SP6a:
I've discovered how to give multiple people update privileges on a DL. We
have two domains, PEOPLE and EXCHANGE, where the latter trusts the former.
Each Exchange mailbox is associated with a PEOPLE domain account. I created
a NT Global Group (DLADMINS) that contains the NT accounts associated with
the mailboxes of those who need update privileges. Then, in Exchange
Administrator, I added that group, with "User" privileges, to the
"Permissions" page of DLs that needed attention from these people.

I know I've seen posts from others asking about this, but can't remember if
anyone had a solution.

If you did all this months ago and posted your findings, when did you do
that? I've been keeping my own archive for about a year, and couldn't find
it.

If you know how to get to the archives, please give me lots of details
off-line. Despite some foot-in-mouth postings earlier, I consider myself
reasonably intelligent. I really do want to understand this stuff.

Whan a user in Exchange Organization A send a meeting request to users
in her Exchange Organization and Exchange Organization B, the users in
her Exchange Organization receive the meeting request without any
problem, but the users in Exchange Organization B receive it as a
regular email message with "MIME garbage" contained in the message - see
a snip of it below. Not certain if this is true every time, but the
instances I've seen are when she sends on behalf of the Executuves she
supports.

Any ideas?

I have a customer using X2K, who wants to keep a copy of all sent
messages from each user. Is there a way to send ALL sent messages
automatically to a central mailbox? The idea is not to use a Client
side rule so the users have no way NOT to archive the email. Thanks!

Hello Everyone,

There are two domains with two different exchange orgs. One is exchange
2000 (xxx.com), one is 5.5 (yyy.com).

We are in the process of migrating users from the 5.5 domain/org to the
2000 domain/org. We have an SMTP connector setup currently to send all
emails to yyy.com from our org through a VPN connection.

We just migrated about 20 users from one remote office onto our exchange
server. (dumped their emails into a PST and imported them into a new
account at xxx.com)

We put [EMAIL PROTECTED] as their primary SMTP address, but added
[EMAIL PROTECTED] so they can still receive emails to the old address for
a while.

Well now people that send them emails are getting a bounce message with
the following.. X-Display-Name: lastname, firstname - MOVED.

I tried to create a new recipient policy but I don't know if I'm doing
it right. Anyone have a step by step on how to do this by chance? I'm
going through the help files now but thought I would ask the experts
here.

Thanks in advance.

Wilson

Is there is a way to install the Exchange aware version of ADUC, but not
the rest of the Win2k adminpak or Exchange System Manager?

We are going to install ADUC on our help desk staff's computers, but
we'd prefer not to "pollute" their PCs with stuff they don't need.

RE: Exchange 2000 HA

2002-09-12 Thread Ed Crowley

More importantly, it's very hard to determine if it does work. You have
to fail it over to tell, and do it enough times to be sure that it'll
really work when you do need it. That is, it might work five times you
test it, and then when the real event occurs, the database is corrupt.
In addition, it's hard to test because putting together a test
infrastructure is itself very costly.

I agree based on theory, but have not implemented it myself. The product
being considered is Mirror View to go with an EMC SAN/ Chris, the
reason DoubleTake is not an option is based on the understanding that
the replication is a "best effort" process and is not guaranteed.
According to EMC, Mirror View is confirmed replication between sites.

The bottom line, though, is that if this doesn't work, then it's not
worth the huge chunk of money they are asking for it.

Cheers,
Karen

RE: display names during conversion

2002-09-12 Thread Ed Crowley

No way. First, moving the mailbox doesn't affect the display name.
That would be established when you ran the connection agreement.
Second, ADC doesn't talk to the NT SAM. My guess is that the display
name got populated the way you see it from when you ran the ADMT, and
your connection agreement hasn't written over it. Are you sure your
recipient connection agreement is working properly?

So we've finally started our migration to 2000.
The environment:
w2k native mode - e2k mixed mode.
a 2 way ADC connecting 5.5 to e2k.
After I run the ADMT, perform the ADclean, and then move the mailbox
from 5.5 to 2000, the display name of the mailbox (AD user) changes.
Instead of taking the 5.5 display name, it is taking the NT4.0 User
Manager Full Name field and using that for the display name. I have
been referencing q269843 and using ADSI edit to try and solve the
problem. It tells you to modify the "selected CA", however, I'm not
sure if there are additional ones that I need to. There is the one that
I created, and modified, but there are also two others, namely the
CN=Default ADC Policy and the CN=Config CA_NYC_NYEXCH03 (the CA created
during install).

Does anyone know which CA or CA's I need to modify via ADSI Edit, or
does someone have another solution to this?

Thanks

I have a customer using X2K, who wants to keep a copy of all sent
messages from each user. Is there a way to send ALL sent messages
automatically to a central mailbox? The idea is not to use a Client
side rule so the users have no way NOT to archive the email. Thanks!

Tell him there won't be any redundency when he takes the HD. Before
fire/flood can happen, you'll probably lose your RAID 5.

My boss has a friend that has a company that backs up their servers by
taking a spare hard drive from a RAID 5 config home ever night.
Currently we are using a VAX tape drive to back up our systems. He seems
to think that the hard drive solution sounds like a great idea. I think
it's possibly the worst idea ever created. Besides the constant
vibrations, and temperature changes that the hard drives would have to
withstand could everyone give me some more reasons as to why this is a
bad idea. I think I just need a little ammo from other admins to help
convince him.

it would eat the majority of my budget

Certainly not the ideal scenario... that's for sure.

For starters, What if you lose the tape on your way home and someone
else picks it up?

For a couple of hundred dollars a year... get the company to pay for
proper offsite storage services. It's their data, so they should want to
be protecting it as best they can.

RE: Backup Hardware

2002-09-12 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

Now taking tapes home is normal. Depending on your backup schedule most
companies do this on a weekly bases. Bye the way taking one drive home does
no good at all. Think of it this way. Lets say the RAID box catches
fire/blows up. Do you really think one drive will allow a full rebuild. I
don't think so. Tell your Boss that his friend is an idiot.

Is there a way using Exchange 5.5 on a NT4 platform (current with all
service packs) to monitor the activity of a mailbox? If not, is there 3rd
party software available to do this? Management is looking for a count of
emails daily in and out of users mailboxes. I'm sure that more information
than simply a count would be a bonus to them.

Subject: need help with setting up a recipient policy

Hello Everyone,

There are two domains with two different exchange orgs. One is
exchange 2000 (xxx.com), one is 5.5 (yyy.com).

We are in the process of migrating users from the 5.5
domain/org to the 2000 domain/org. We have an SMTP connector
setup currently to send all emails to yyy.com from our org
through a VPN connection.

We just migrated about 20 users from one remote office onto our
exchange server. (dumped their emails into a PST and imported
them into a new account at xxx.com)

We put [EMAIL PROTECTED] as their primary SMTP address, but
added [EMAIL PROTECTED] so they can still receive emails to the
old address for a while.

Well now people that send them emails are getting a bounce
message with the following.. X-Display-Name: lastname,
firstname - MOVED.

I tried to create a new recipient policy but I don't know if
I'm doing it right. Anyone have a step by step on how to do
this by chance? I'm going through the help files now but
thought I would ask the experts here.

Thanks in advance.

Wilson

Subject: Mailbox monitoring

Is there a way using Exchange 5.5 on a NT4 platform (current with all
service packs) to monitor the activity of a mailbox? If not, is there 3rd
party software available to do this? Management is looking for a count of
emails daily in and out of users mailboxes. I'm sure that more information
than simply a count would be a bonus to them.

TIA.

Exchange aware ADUC without ESM?

2002-09-12 Thread Ken Cornetet

Is there is a way to install the Exchange aware version of ADUC, but not the
rest of the Win2k adminpak or Exchange System Manager?

We are going to install ADUC on our help desk staff's computers, but we'd
prefer not to "pollute" their PCs with stuff they don't need.

Re: Exchange 2000 HA

2002-09-12 Thread M2web

Actually Double Take works for replication, however it is not High
Availability Solution as the developer NSI or Sunbelt promote it on their
site. But if you just want the data replicated then if you tweek it (and not
according to their support way's soultion) , it does the job.
Their other solution Geo Cluster is so damn expensive that we decided it is
not worth it.

Well, obviously this is an area I've looked into quite a bit.

My major issue with replication is bandwidth, in a large distributed
Exchange organizations there are in some cases sites which don't have (and
can't obtain) sufficient bandwidth for complete replication. A solution
which used snapshot (Exchange aware) backups and replicated diffs, would
probably be ideal in terms of bandwidth optimization... Recovery from
failover would be my biggest concern. How do the changes get replicated back
quickly in order to bring the production server back online and how
automated will the process be. Another issue which weighs on my mind
somewhat is testing... How easy is it to test failover, and how much
expertise is required to make sure it goes smoothly when the %^&# hits the
fan. There are also some issues around message routing in the event of a
partial failover: updating of DNS and IP routing, client configuration and
the like.

Short answer: I don't think any full WAN replication solutions are as
straightforward or easy to implement as the vendors might like you to think.
Not that they aren't an appropriate solution for some companies, but
sunglasses are required during evaluation in order to not be blinded by the
sunshine and light the vendors espouse.

And like Missy, I like the Marathon Technologies solutions if for no reason
other than they've been at this game a lot longer than the other players and
have earned a good reputation during that time.

RE: From nirvana to hell in one upgrade - the tail of direct book ing in Outlook 2k+

2002-09-12 Thread Andrey Fyodorov

I did not have to do that. But as someone suggested on this list I made sure that
Exchange Event service would use a service account (which has Exchange full admin
rights) instead of System.

Had a lot of problems getting AutoAccept from ExchangeCode.com to work with
E2K and found the problem (with some help from this list) was with
permissions. Had to give the eventconfig send as and receive as permissions
on the resource mailboxes to make it work.

Subject: From nirvana to hell in one upgrade - the tail of direct
booking in Outlook 2k+
Importance: High

Here's the story -

Running Exchange 5.5 and users booking appointments using the AutoAccept
script from ExchangeCode.com - and my life is great (except for those
darn reoccurring meetings from time to time). Now we make the big move
to E2K and since the autoaccecpt script "doesn't" (some reports say it
does, some it doesn't - my testing says it doesn't) work on E2K... so I
need to come up with a new method. The two methods are using the really
old method of leaving an Outlook97 machine logged in with all the
resource accounts setup to delegate their appointments to the one
dedicated Outlook97 account -or- use the new fangled Outlook 2000/2002
direct booking feature (Direct Booking of Resource Without a Delegate
Acct. [Q196534]) where in the client directly books their own meetings
using Outlook.

Ok, I test it (the new direct book method) and all seems ok. But...
when I roll it out into production I have random users (dozens out of
4,000 users) that can not book onto a room because Outlook first
declines the meeting because it says it is "busy" and then follows that
up with an error of "Unable to save Free/Busy". So, in trouble shooting
I have narrowed it down to the client by:

* Happens even if the user logs into another machine with their account
(without roaming profiles)
* Deleting the free/busy file of the calendar (using the GW-Client) and
then re-setting it up fixes it from time to time
* Granting Owner rights also "sometimes" fixes the problem but not
always

Is there anyone out there that is using the new OL2000+ direct booking
method and has it working correctly? Is there some way to get the
exchangecode.com script working on E2K?

And like Missy, I like the Marathon Technologies solutions if for no reason

display names during conversion

2002-09-12 Thread Jonathan Beeler

So we've finally started our migration to 2000.
The environment:
w2k native mode - e2k mixed mode.
a 2 way ADC connecting 5.5 to e2k.
After I run the ADMT, perform the ADclean, and then move the mailbox from
5.5 to 2000, the display name of the mailbox (AD user) changes. Instead
of taking the 5.5 display name, it is taking the NT4.0 User Manager Full
Name field and using that for the display name. I have been referencing
q269843 and using ADSI edit to try and solve the problem. It tells you to
modify the "selected CA", however, I'm not sure if there are additional
ones that I need to. There is the one that I created, and modified, but
there are also two others, namely the CN=Default ADC Policy and the
CN=Config CA_NYC_NYEXCH03 (the CA created during install).

Does anyone know which CA or CA's I need to modify via ADSI Edit, or does
someone have another solution to this?

Thanks

Except in Microsoft's Office Suites. Don't know about the new ones, but the

IMAP Contacts

2002-09-12 Thread Mike Carlson

Is there any way to view the contacts on the exchange server for a user
through IMAP? I tried adding the contacts folder as a subscribed IMAP
folder but that just displayed it as an email folder.

Thanks,
Mike

David, there is a fine article at www.exchangeadmin.com by Joseph Neubauer
in this months issue (oct2002) entitled Using and Configuring Outlook Direct

Follow up answer to this problem:

It turns out to be a "bug" in the Outlook client. If you give additional
rights beyond "Editor" to any DL or Default then the Outlook client will
produce the below listed errors. So, you should only grant Editor and
Author rights when using the direct booking methods.

Are all the clients running the same version of Outlook? SP1a I think fixed
some Free/Busy issues. Try www.slipstick.com for more info.

Outlook 2k+

Acct. [Q196534]) where in the client directly books their own meetings
using Outlook.

Is there some way to get the
exchangecode.com script working on E2K?

have you upgraded your Promodag to the newest version, 5? It is much faster

Re: Exchange 2000 HA

2002-09-12 Thread Missy Koslosky

It's not worth the huge chunk of money they're asking, or tons of
organizations would be happy with the solution. I've tested most of these
solutions in the past, and the only one that made me even think about
deployment was the solution from Marathon Technologies.

I agree based on theory, but have not implemented it myself.
The product being considered is Mirror View to go with an EMC
SAN/ Chris, the reason DoubleTake is not an option is based on
the understanding that the replication is a "best effort" process
and is not guaranteed. According to EMC, Mirror View is confirmed
replication between sites.

The bottom line, though, is that if this doesn't work, then it's
not worth the huge chunk of money they are asking for it.

Re: Exchange 2000 HA

2002-09-12 Thread Missy Koslosky

I mean that you need to take into account the way Exchange works with its
transaction logs - how they're cached and then written. Doing this
simultaneously with geographically dispersed systems is unreliable and is
simply, IMO, asking for at trouble. There is no product out there today
that can make this work consistently - they may work for a while, but I
would not want to tell anyone that this type of solution (geo-clustering) is
a great way to go.

Make sense?

Missy, when you say "doesn't do it nicely," does that imply that
it does not work well/reliably as well as not being worth the cost?

Service packs are most always cumulative, most, if not all of the time.
That is except during leap years.

Subject: Mailbox monitoring

Is there a way using Exchange 5.5 on a NT4 platform (current with all
service packs) to monitor the activity of a mailbox? If not, is there 3rd
party software available to do this? Management is looking for a count of
emails daily in and out of users mailboxes. I'm sure that more information
than simply a count would be a bonus to them.

TIA.

Missy, when you say "doesn't do it nicely," does that imply that
it does not work well/reliably as well as not being worth the cost?

The SMTP service needs to be restarted. Does it work? Yes, to the extent
that the code is developed. It won't add disclaimers to MSTNEF messages
though unless the samples have been changed (haven't checked).

RE: need help with setting up a recipient policy

2002-09-12 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

When getting the bounce message which email address is the sender using?
yyy.com or xxx.com

Wilson

Mailbox monitoring

2002-09-12 Thread blambert

Is there a way using Exchange 5.5 on a NT4 platform (current with all
service packs) to monitor the activity of a mailbox? If not, is there 3rd
party software available to do this? Management is looking for a count of
emails daily in and out of users mailboxes. I'm sure that more information
than simply a count would be a bonus to them.

TIA.

There are a number of high availability solutions listed at
www.mail-resources.com in the weblinks section including EMS. What are the actual requirements and how does DoubleTake not meet
those?

RE: Email Disclaimer using SMTP event sink.

2002-09-12 Thread Chris Scharff

The SMTP service needs to be restarted. Does it work? Yes, to the extent
that the code is developed. It won't add disclaimers to MSTNEF messages
though unless the samples have been changed (haven't checked).

Exchange 2000 HA

2002-09-12 Thread Karen McLaughlin

I'm looking for best practices and white papers that discuss
replicating Exchange 2000 clusters to a remote site. Management
is concerned over how to do backups and what kind of software
is out there that can provide this functionality. DoubleTake is
not good enough, and that's the only product I am familiar with.

Any pointers appreciated.

need help with setting up a recipient policy

2002-09-12 Thread Varghese, Wilson

Hello Everyone,

There are two domains with two different exchange orgs. One is exchange 2000
(xxx.com), one is 5.5 (yyy.com).

We are in the process of migrating users from the 5.5 domain/org to the 2000
domain/org. We have an SMTP connector setup currently to send all emails to yyy.com
from our org through a VPN connection.

We just migrated about 20 users from one remote office onto our exchange server.
(dumped their emails into a PST and imported them into a new account at xxx.com)

We put [EMAIL PROTECTED] as their primary SMTP address, but added [EMAIL PROTECTED] so
they can still receive emails to the old address for a while.

Well now people that send them emails are getting a bounce message with the
following.. X-Display-Name: lastname, firstname - MOVED.

I tried to create a new recipient policy but I don't know if I'm doing it right.
Anyone have a step by step on how to do this by chance? I'm going through the help
files now but thought I would ask the experts here.

Thanks in advance.

Wilson
