Exchange 2003 design?

2003-02-12 Thread Ryan Finnesey
I am in the very early stages of doing a new Active Directory and
Exchange deployment. I am sorry to say that I missed MEC this year and
I do not have a not of information on Windows.net or Exchange 2003. I
would like to design the deployment so it is a very easy upgrade to
Windows.net and Exchange 2003. I know that the code is not final yet
but I would like to look to the future where is a good place for me to
look for design help? Did anyone post the slides from MEC?

those gateways are not use at the same time, only one gateway at a time, the problem
is in the TCPIP the gateways is set to G1 but if i look it using the IPCONFIG command
it says the gateways is set on G2.

Having multiple gateways always causes problems in my experience. What
is the reason for having the multiple gateways? Are they both in the
same subnet?

You are much better off avoiding a multiple gateway configuration if you
can.

RE: OWA HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error

2003-02-12 Thread Andrey Fyodorov
Was SA still running or had it quit?

I have seen some weird situation when SA has quit and Outlook clients can't log in but
OWA is still working.
Or another time SA and all other services were running but no one could log in,
restarting SA and dependent services fixed it.

RE: Offline backup of Exch2k - options

2003-02-12 Thread Andrey Fyodorov
I like this idea the best. You could have an additional drive in the Exchange server
that would hold the backup file, or you could have a little helper server that would
hold the backup(s)

I (because I don't trust Legato alone) have a helper server with 3 drives. Drive 1 is
for Mondays and Thursdays, Drive 2 is for Tuesdays and Fridays, Drive 3 is for
Wednesdays and Saturdays. This way I have the last three days backed up with NTBACKUP.

P.S. Since Legato also runs at different times (and eats transaction logs) I always
have to be aware which backup (Legato or NTBACKUP) was the most recent one and whether
it completed successfully in case if I need to make a restore to the point of failure.

Why not run an online backup on the local server, using Win2K Backup to
back up to disk, and then copy the online backup over the T?

Andrey,

That's true. But you know, upon reading the archives (shoulda done that
_before_ I posted the question!!), I don't think I want to use eseutil
on a regular basis, unless it's necessary. Do you know of any other
(3rd-party) app that would do this, or am I just barking up the wrong
tree?

We have a remote office connected via T1. They have their own server
(Exch2k Enterprise SP3 , Win2k Server SP3), and the database is close to
10Gb. Running an online backup (nightly) over the T1 is taking waaay
too long. It's been suggested that we perform an offline backup, bring
the stores back online, & shoot the backed up files down the T1 later. I
have the procedure to this using eseutil (Q296788), but I would like to
know if anyone else has any other options.

Subject: Outlook 2k unable to open you default folders

This PC had a problem after a power outage. I have gotten it running fine
except for one problem. I get that error when trying to open a mailbox.
Now, I can goto another PC and open this users mailbox no problem so it is
not a problem with the info store. On this PC you can pingthe mail server,
DNS is working correctly and anything else network related is working
fine.
Now, when I go into exchange properties and reenter the users name and
tell it to check name, I get this: THe name could not be resolved. The
microsoft Exchange Address Boook was unable to log on to the Microsoft
Exchange Server computer...
AGain, the server is fine as all other users are working fine and this
user can goto another system and check mail. There is something still
wrong with this system. ITs running 2k pro and I have reinstalled outlook
2k and SP3. Nothing has changed. I have also set the logon network
security to None in hopes that I could force logon credentials to the
server but when I try to open outlook it just goes straight to the above
error again, ignoring the need for authentication.
Anyone have any ideas? This is my VP;s system and reinstall is not really
an option.

I have the procedure to this using eseutil (Q296788), but I would like
to know if anyone else has any other options.

RE: Outlook over VPN - MTU issue? - problems with Q301337 fix?

2003-02-12 Thread Smith, Ronni
Well, that is just the thing. It is not just that one client. He is always
the pain-in-the-patootie guy so I assumed it was just his karma when I
couldn't find anything different between our machines other than I use DSL
and he uses dial-up. At that time that Q article told you to call PSS and I
wasn't willing to do that for the one guy until I knew more about what the
fix was.

But now they have released that fix and I also have another user (a much
more capable one) who is experiencing the same thing. He too is on dialup.
In both cases, they can ping by name, they can explore the domain, their
home drives get properly mapped to the server here in the office. In fact,
they can do everything except connect to the Exchange server and get data
from it. Connections do show up under netstat -a on the Exchange server if
they try but it never manages to load the data. The connections say
"waiting" and are on a couple of highish ports iirc. At least on the
Exchange server end.

All of the client machines involved are Windows 2000 Pro machines that were
joined to the domain here in the office before being taken home. The only
users successfully using the MUVPN client (software vpn) and running Outlook
to connect back to the Exchange server are those who have DSL not dial-up
connections. I know the pitp guy's virtual adapter was set up exactly
correctly because I did it myself and compared step by step with my own
machine which worked fine over my dsl line. I will check the other user's
machine when he brings it back in (it's his laptop). And I guess I will add
a modem to my machine, make sure it still works over dsl and then see if it
works over dialup. This may be instructive enough to be worth the effort and
expense.

Thanks to all who have passed on ideas. I will try adding a modem to my
machine next. Unless I can get the guy with the laptop to loan it to me.

Ronni

I would agree with Mike that it is probably and issue with that one client.
I would look carefully at the name resolution.

Can the user ping the exchange server via name resolution across the tunnel?

We ran into some recent problems when using the MUVPN from Watchguard,
especially on XP machines. Occasionally some of the MUVPN's do not setup the
Virtual Adapter and it connects using SafeNet's default mode which uses the
"Shim" (there are 3 options for this disabled, preferred, and required)
which leaves you without any name resolution that may have been supplied via
the virtual adapter. The only way around the problem with those that will
only connect with the Shim was to use an ALMOST file on there machine.
Watchguard is aware of this issue and is working with SafeNet

Ronni,

Given that your other VPN clients work OK except this one I think I'd be
looking at the specifics of this guys VPN and network setup and start with
the simple stuff like the Watchguard traffic monitor and logs to see if
anything's getting blocked and with the name resolution and dialup
performance at the client end, rather than diving in with a bunch of
hotfixes.

We have a very similar setup here, and these tools fix pretty much all these
issues here.

Just my approach,
Mike

We are a one Exchange 5.5 server shop. A few months ago I began the process
of moving us to a new server. New hardware, new name, following Ed's Move
Server Method which I have already done once without issue on NT4 to NT4.
This time we moved to Windows 2000 for the new server's OS. New server is
therefore Exch 5.5 SP4 on Win2k SP2 + security fixes and old server was/is

except for one guy (the "n-sigma where n is a big number" guy of course)
whose home machine couldn't connect fully to the new mail server over VPN as
it had when it was on the NT4 box. It does make connections to the Exchange
Server. I can see that with netstat -a on either side but it does not appear
to transfer data. He uses a software vpn client to connect to our network.
So at first I was ready to blame the MTU issue and make the modifications
necessary to correct that. However, when I researched it, it seemed as
though I should be having the same problem with all the clients that use
vpn. Now some of my vpn clients have an appliance (Watchguard SOH

RE: Strange 550 error

2003-02-12 Thread East, Bill
Actually the name "optonline.net" is misleading, the company I believe is
"Optimum Online" or some such, n'est ce pas? But the name was a point of
discussion, Jeffrey; it appears that the first thing that a spammer does
after bringing the KFC and Schlitz into his trailer is to pick a domain name
with the phrase "opt-in" in it. At the moment I am turfing email from
optinforyou, optindeals, opt-inemail, optinllc, and about 30 other domains
with the word "opt" in them.

It means exactly what it says (and 550 isn't terribly generic).

Domain.com is not a local host on the server you connected to and that
server is also not a gateway for it. Either your DNS is fscked or one or
more of their Mx records is improperly configured. Using telnet and the
basic SMTP commands in RFC821 will allow you to confirm this for yourself if

you'd like.[1]

Charles -

I fully agree and have successfully sent email through by telnetting from

ensure this doesn't happen in the future as the issue is sporadic, but is
quite perturbing to the customer.

Chris - Thanks for the info - looks like it could be an MX issue as the MX
record for the customer points to oldcustomername.com not
newcustomername.com (although both names are still valid). FYI - If you
check out MSKB 284204, it does say that 550 maps to a "Generic protocol
error (SMTP error)". Any suggestions on how to use the info in rfc821 to
determine what the issue is and why it is sporadic? Thanks!

RE: Strange 550 error

2003-02-12 Thread Jeffrey Dubyn
Charles -

I fully agree and have successfully sent email through by telnetting from
the Exchange server to that domain. What I'm trying to figure out is how to
ensure this doesn't happen in the future as the issue is sporadic, but is
quite perturbing to the customer.

Jeff

Jim -

The customer is not on optonline.net, is not listed at ordb.org, there has
not been any spamming coming from this domain from this server, and the
problem is sporadic - so I don't think that's the issue.

And what's you got against Optonline.net :) Although the owners won't let
us watch the Yankees (can't get it on cable here on Long Island!), they give
kick as* Internet speeds.

Maybe you just answered your own question.

Have you checked the RBL's to see if your listed? Have you been spamming
this domain to death? With a domain name like optonline.net, I'd be tempted
to drop you in a Blackhole list, just on general principles.

recurring scheduling problems

2003-02-12 Thread Mitchell Mike
Good afternoon,

Outlook 98 NT 4.0 SP4

I was working with a user on an Outlook scheduling problem and after we had
completed the rescheduling process
I was curious of how other people were handling reschedules.

Here is the scenario: User needed to reschedule a recurring meeting and the
resource that the meeting was to be held
was already occupied. The user removed the resource that was in use, and
found another resource.

Meeting was scheduled and the new resource accepted. The only problem that
remains is that the original resource
was left with a meeting but no one will be there.

How do you handle this rescheduling issue?

Thanks for your input.

I sent myself an email with about 41 attachments (all Excel files) and when
I received the email and first double clicked on it to open it, Id' get an
error message saying "Unable to open one or more attachments" and would
display a blank email without the attachments. Then after a couple of
minutes when I'd try to open the same email again, it was able to open and
display the attachments. I'm running Outlook 2000 on a Win2K Professional
machine. I do have NAV running with File System Protection enabled. I even
tried disabling Real Time protection before opening the email but got the
same message. This is not system specific as I tested it on multiple
machines. Any ideas ?

I have seen this behavior with several AV software packages (Groupshield,
Grousphield 2000, NAV, and Trend. What I have seen happen is that the AV
software takes more time depending on the size of the message. At times I
have had to double click on an attachment multiple times before it will
open. A lack of patience on my part is likely here.

Anyway, I don't think you are encountering anything out of the ordinary

Subject: Strange behaviour with multiple attachments

I encountered a strange behaviour with Outlook 2000.
I'm running Outlook 2000 on a Win2K Professional machine. I do have NAV
running with File System Protection enabled. I even tried disabling Real
Time protection before opening the email but got the same message.
This is not system specific as I tested it on multiple machines.
Any ideas ?

I have seen misleading 550 errors if Reverse DNS to your domain is not
correct. If the IP address of your SMTP relay/server resolves to
mail.domain.com, but the SMTP server/relay actually claims to be a different
host name, then you can get a 550 error.

RE: Strange 550 error

2003-02-12 Thread Jeffrey Dubyn
Bill -

The mail was not coming from optonline.net, but from a customer site using a
different ISP to another domain. I didn't change the error at all - it's a
copy and paste from the log. I didn't post the domains as I'm not sure if
the customer would appreciate it in a public forum.

As for Optonline, it is a cable modem provider (excellent speeds!), but it
does allow people inside the network to relay - send out messages with no
regard for where it is coming from or where it is going to. If I'm NOT
inside this network though, it does not allow relaying.

As best as I can guess, the remote server is complaining that the format of
your message does not conform to the format it expects, which would be a
user at a local host in the recipient's domain. The other half of the
message is that it's not a gateway, so it will not pass on what appears to
be a non-local address. If you could give us the address to which you are
sending, even in the format @theaddress.tld, we might be able to
guess a little better. Oh, and did you munge the 550 message at all, or is
that how it appeared verbatim?

FWIW, there has been some discussion of your provider, optonline.com, on
news.admin.net-abuse.email in recent days, with the general concensus (hah!)
being that optonline is not a spammer, just a cable modem provider with a
lot of potentially abusable clients. So there is a small but existing
possiblity that you are being blocked due to your address.

"...no nothin' - just seems like the email went into a black hole."

Maybe you just answered your own question.

Have you checked the RBL's to see if your listed? Have you been spamming
this domain to death? With a domain name like optonline.net, I'd be tempted
to drop you in a Blackhole list, just on general principles.

[1] Essential skills to pick up, now is as good a time as any.

The 550 error maps to a generic protocol error (SMTP error), but I can't
make heads or tails out of the rest of the message.

What is strange is that the domain comes up successfully in nslookup and
from the Exchange server, I can connect via telnet to port 25. The users
have had no trouble sending email to this recipient at this domain before or

since, except for this most important email (or course). There was no NDR,

no nothin' - just seems like the email went into a black hole.

EMC's business continuance volume can stop the Exchange services for a short time and
mirror the files, then split the mirror, then start the Exchange services again. You

We have a remote office connected via T1. They have their own server
(Exch2k Enterprise SP3 , Win2k Server SP3), and the database is close to

the stores back online, & shoot the backed up files down the T1 later.
I have the procedure to this using eseutil (Q296788), but I would like

Hmm. I'm getting this error: HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error, when

fine, but that error appears in what would be the (bigger pane) item

Interestingly enough, if the user clicks "Calendar", their calendar will

A google and MSKB search only mentions old browsers and free-busy

Anyone seen this before?

RE: Strange behaviour with multiple attachments

2003-02-12 Thread Couch, Nate
I have seen this behavior with several AV software packages (Groupshield,
Grousphield 2000, NAV, and Trend. What I have seen happen is that the AV
software takes more time depending on the size of the message. At times I
have had to double click on an attachment multiple times before it will
open. A lack of patience on my part is likely here.

Anyway, I don't think you are encountering anything out of the ordinary
here.

Subject: Outlook over VPN - MTU issue? - problems with Q301337 fix?

We are a one Exchange 5.5 server shop. A few months ago I began the process
of moving us to a new server. New hardware, new name, following Ed's Move
Server Method which I have already done once without issue on NT4 to NT4.
This time we moved to Windows 2000 for the new server's OS. New server is
therefore Exch 5.5 SP4 on Win2k SP2 + security fixes and old server was/is
Exch 5.5 SP4 on NT4 SP 6a + security fixes. I moved mailboxes over the
course of a few days and everyone was fine, running happily without issues,
except for one guy (the "n-sigma where n is a big number" guy of course)
whose home machine couldn't connect fully to the new mail server over VPN as
it had when it was on the NT4 box. It does make connections to the Exchange
Server. I can see that with netstat -a on either side but it does not appear
to transfer data. He uses a software vpn client to connect to our network.
So at first I was ready to blame the MTU issue and make the modifications
necessary to correct that. However, when I researched it, it seemed as
though I should be having the same problem with all the clients that use
vpn. Now some of my vpn clients have an appliance (Watchguard SOHO at user's
home connects to our Watchguard Firebox) and some have the software client.
Those with the appliance might not see the issue but my box at home uses the
software client (SafeNet created for Watchguard) and it works fine as do all
the SOHOs. The only pertinent difference I can see between my n-sigma user's
connection and mine is that he uses dial-up and I use a dsl line. I have
also verified that this is dial-up related in that a second user also has
the issue with dial-up access.

I have googled. I have technetted. I have searched archives. I have
found/done the following:

I have read Q301337 "PMTU Detection May Not Work After You Install Windows
2000 SP2" and while it appears to be the most pertinent, I am leery of
adding a fix that until recently was not available except through PSS just
to fix 2 people's e-mail access from home. Certainly it is true that our
software vpn assigns an address on the same subnet to the client pc. But
that is true for my machine as well, so I am also not 100% convinced that
this will solve my issue. Has anyone here installed the Q301337 hotfix
Q301337_W2k_SP3_x86_en.exe on a Windows 2000 SP2 Exchange Server and found
that it caused problems? If not I am willing to try it. But I find myself a
bit nervous about that "Uninstall is not available" note at the bottom of
the download page. I do not have a server I can test with at the moment. If
I get no positive feedback on this fix I may decide to build one first.
Positive feedback about this fix would be appreciated as I am not sure where
I can find a box to build a temporary test Exchange Server out of.

Following Q159211 "Diagnoses and Treatment of Black Hole Routers" I did find
a breakdown at an MTU of about 1200 for the n-sigma user's machine over
dial-up and at 1450 for the other user's machine so I am reasonably certain
MTU is a factor.

I reviewed Q259783 "PPPoE with ICS Requires MTU Setting Below 1492 on the
ICS Client" however, neither user is running ICS, nor is either one running
PPPoE.

Q120642 "TCP/IP & NBT Configuration Parameters for Windows" seems to
indicate that I could add the MTU value for the dialup adapter to solve this
problem but that has not worked for the second user and Q3031337 seems to
indicate it might be ignored anyway due to the way the software VPN client
behaves.

Any other suggestions/pointers will be gratefully received.

Ronni

What is the point of having a tape from a remote server? You gonna restore

Offline backup of Exch2k - options

2003-02-12 Thread HOLLIDAY, Eric

We have a remote office connected via T1. They have their own server
(Exch2k Enterprise SP3 , Win2k Server SP3), and the database is close to
10Gb. Running an online backup (nightly) over the T1 is taking waaay
too long. It's been suggested that we perform an offline backup, bring
the stores back online, & shoot the backed up files down the T1 later.
I have the procedure to this using eseutil (Q296788), but I would like
to know if anyone else has any other options.

TIA,

Strange Problem with Word 2000

2003-02-12 Thread SAP
Hi All,
We have a very strange issue here, windows 2000 file and print server and 2000 Prof
clients runnig office 2000.
when users access word docs on the local machines, everything is perfectly fine, but
when they access the word docs on the server, it works fine to open the docs but
to save or close it takes ages... and happens only with word docs... no other file or
program.. excel works fine, everything works fine... no event logs on either the
server or the client workstationsnothing at all.. I searched the support sites and
came across suggestions of outlook 2000 and turning off the journalling option... this
does not apply to our case.. since the outlook journal option mentioned is already
disabled
Can some one throw some more light on this strnage error???

RE: Outlook over VPN - MTU issue? - problems with Q301337 fix?

2003-02-12 Thread Dave Vantine

New server is
therefore Exch 5.5 SP4 on Win2k SP2 + security fixes and old server was/is
Exch 5.5 SP4 on NT4 SP 6a + security fixes.

PPPoE.

Q120642 "TCP/IP & NBT Configuration Parameters for Windows" seems to
indicate that I co

OWA 5.5 isn't exchange, it's just a big vbscript asp program that uses
some COM objects and MAPI to access mail. It worked just fine in our
test lab. Unfortunately, our testing didn't include creating new users
after the switch to native mode, since switching to native mode was the
last thing on the test plan.

A word of warning! If you plan on using Exchange 5.5 OWA to access E2K
mailboxes, DO NOT GO NATIVE E2K! Any new users created after going
native will not be able to access their mailbox via OWA 5.5.

We opened a PSS call on this and Microsoft confirmed that this will not
work because "legacy" attributes are not created after switching to
native mode. They could not tell us what these "legacy" attributes are
(a quick perusal with LDP seems to indicate there is no obvious
differences in AD attributes).

connection?
It's using TCP.

Subject: OWA "Page cannot be displayed"

Okay, I have an issue with OWA that has just started to happen recently.
I'm running Windows 2000 SP3 / Exchange 2000 SP3. I have users that
once in a while they lose connection to their OWA. When they try to
reconnect they get a page cannot be displayed. They are accessing the
OWA through https and when they get that message if they change the web
address to http they can get back in without any problems. It seems to
me like the first connection gets froze up so by going the non-secure
way they are going through a new connection. I have 24 restaurants
accessing OWA and they all have had problems at one time or another and
I have even experienced it at home a couple of times. IE is completed
updated as well as everything on the server side. Our internet
connection is always solid and doesn't go down. Has anyone seen this or
have any suggestions I could try to keep this from happening?

Thanks,

Greg Householder

OT: eManager Rule Management

I figure a few folks here might use the Trend Micro ScanMail with the
eManager. I have version 5.11. I already made a feature request to Trend
but I thought maybe someone has come up with a work around. As one develops
content filters there is no way to sort them nor is there a way to look for
duplicate entries. Any solutions, besides buy a different product? :-)

Re: Strange 550 error

2003-02-12 Thread Chris Scharff
It means exactly what it says (and 550 isn't terribly generic).

Domain.com is not a local host on the server you connected to and that
server is also not a gateway for it. Either your DNS is fscked or one or
more of their Mx records is improperly configured. Using telnet and the
basic SMTP commands in RFC821 will allow you to confirm this for yourself if
you'd like.[1]

[1] Essential skills to pick up, now is as good a time as any.

The 550 error maps to a generic protocol error (SMTP error), but I can't
make heads or tails out of the rest of the message.

What is strange is that the domain comes up successfully in nslookup and
from the Exchange server, I can connect via telnet to port 25. The users
have had no trouble sending email to this recipient at this domain before or

since, except for this most important email (or course). There was no NDR,

no nothin' - just seems like the email went into a black hole.

RE: Strange 550 error

2003-02-12 Thread Public Folder: Exchange

I have seen misleading 550 errors if Reverse DNS to your domain is not
correct. If the IP address of your SMTP relay/server resolves to
mail.domain.com, but the SMTP server/relay actually claims to be a
different host name, then you can get a 550 error.

It's still somewhat manual but would not require the massaging that a CSV

OWA 5.5 isn't exchange, it's just a big vbscript asp program that uses
some COM objects and MAPI to access mail. It worked just fine in our
test lab. Unfortunately, our testing didn't include creating new users
after the switch to native mode, since switching to native mode was the

A word of warning! If you plan on using Exchange 5.5 OWA to access E2K
mailboxes, DO NOT GO NATIVE E2K! Any new users created after going
native will not be able to access their mailbox via OWA 5.5.

We opened a PSS call on this and Microsoft confirmed that this will not
work because "legacy" attributes are not created after switching to
native mode. They could not tell us what these "legacy" attributes are
(a quick perusal with LDP seems to indicate there is no obvious
differences in AD attributes).

If you aren't afraid to write a wee bit of code, Perl and Net::LDAP can
easily do this assuming you want their mailboxes as contacts in AD.

If you want them as contacts in a public folder, you'll have to use MAPI

How is she connecting to the Exchange server? Code such as:

' Create Session And Logon
Set oSession = New MAPI.Session
oSession.Logon ShowDialog:=True

will cause MAPI logon dialog to appear, displaying the default Outlook

the user's mailbox (assuming that user has permission to access the

One can get the name of the default profile from the registry, but I
haven't completely worked this out yet.

RE: WARNING! OWA 5.5 & E2K

2003-02-12 Thread Ken Cornetet
Nope, LegacyDN was the first thing I thought of. I perused the AD
attributes and I didn't see anything that jumped out at me. I assume the
attributes in question must be mailbox attributes in the store, not user
attributes in AD.

They didn't seem interested in going further since using 5.5 OWA with
E2K mailboxes isn't supported. We did not push the matter, though.

We'll probably just escalate getting rid of the reasons to keep 5.5 OWA
so that we can switch to OWA 2000, which, IMHO, is one of the best parts
of E2K anyway.

It's not the MS Exchange legacy DN? Call PSS back and tell them to find
the
attribute(s) in question, they can and if they won't ask them who they'd
like to escalate the call to. You'll likely be able to set those
attributes programmatically.
