Re: Spam Clogging the IMC Queue -- Feigning Open Relay

2003-11-03 Thread Jay Kulsh
Let me answer my own question. Those spammers were using authentication to
logon to SMTP server of our Exchange. Once we saw what user account was
being used and disabled it, problem went away. (Due to POP3 users, we have

Subject: Spam Clogging the IMC Queue -- Feigning Open Relay

Hi folks,

We do not have open relay on our two Exchange servers (5.5 SP4) as tested by
various tools. However in the queue of IMC, there are thousand of messages
that have outside domains in both source and destination addresses. The
addresses of originators are obviously computer generated with words like
[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] etc. We have no proof yet that any of these
messages are actually delivered -- as if we were open realy -- to the
destination domain but that is a possibility.

Symantec techsupport stated that they are not aware of any virus or worm
that can do this.

If we are not allowing open-relay what is causing these messages to get to
our IMC queue? Please help!

Re: Spam Clogging the IMC Queue -- Feigning Open Relay

2003-11-03 Thread AliAdmin
Hi

I had a similar problem as we have a lot of mobile users. Unfortunately the
authentication seemed temperamental depending on which ISP you were using,
so forced everybody to use the VPN and restricted routing to internal IP's
only.

I think that did the trick, but I wouldn't be surprised if the spammers find
a way around it.

Bye

Ali

OWA (E2k) issue with messages appearing to some systems as having attachments.

2003-11-03 Thread Fred Skrotzki
Ok it seems that when I reply to many messages from mailing lists via OWA the replied
message seems to have an attachment (and some new postings also) . At first we
noticed that all messages were using UTF-8 so found the setting to change it from that
to our regional setting.

That didn't solve the problem.

I've tried to search the archive to no luck also searched the support.microsoft.com
site.

Config is W2k server with latest sp(4) and hotfixes, E2k with sp3, with post sp3
rollup and latest security patches applied.

Anybody have any ideas? I have my profile set to send all my e-mails as text only
which as you know OWA doesn't pay attention to.

Doesn't seem to make a differance which version IE we use. tried from IE 5.0 sp4 up
to latest IE 6.0 sp1 + rollup

RE: default recipient policy issue

2003-11-03 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
That's what the default recipient policy does and you probably should
not mess with it. Why do these SMTP and X.400 addresses bother you so
much?

Also if you really, really don't want you contacts to be stamped with
the policy's e-mail addresses, go to each contact's properties, click on
the E-mail addresses tab and then un-check the option that applies the
policy settings.

Now, how are you routing mail to the sister companies? Does mail from
the Internet to the sister companies arrive first to your Exchange
environment (i.e. do the sister companies' MX records point to your
Exchange server?)
If that is the case, then you want to have the e-mail addresses created
by the default policy.

Hi all,

I have a container with lots of contacts from sister companies. I just
noticed that they all got an additonal SMTP/X.400 address, apparently
that
is caused by my default policy.
The filter for that policy just says (mailnickname=*) and I can't
change
the filter as the [Modify] button is dimmed.

What can I do to prevent the policy from messing with my contacts?

Thanks and regards,

I was just taking a look at Xwall and it does in fact look pretty good.

Questions:
What operating system are you running it on?
Does it need a separate SMTP server to be running or does it provide its own?
If it needs another, what do you suggest?

Thanks,

We have used Xwall for about a year. It is very good. It is one guy I
think. He is very responsive.

It seems like when you ask if something can be done, it gets put in the
next release ...

I think he is Austrian , so be a little careful with his choice of
good/bad english words ...

We use Bayesian filtering on it. I would suggest that you first get your
other filters in place and are happy with them before you start
collecting stats to start your bayesian filtering. Then, once it is
working, review the emails and the stats (in .csv files) and set your
level a touch higher than what you think it should be ...

You can also edit the NDR's ... Does virus scanning ... Etc, etc, etc,
you name it ...

I also took the .csv's and the collected the blocked messages and made
an .asp site for my users, so that they could log in through a web page
and unblock email addresses (it also does unique whitelists for
individual users ...)

For the price, it is great ... Probably be bought out soon ...

Let us all know what you think of Xwall if you get it running. I
looked at their web page and it's only $350 per server (any number of
users). If it works that sound very reasonable.

Exchange 5.5

Sorry if this came through twice. Had to change the text type and
re-send.

This is a little off-topic. We are about to deploy XWall for Exchange
on our front end IMC relays. One of the requirements is that we change
the smtp port for Exchange on the IMC's to use 24 since XWall will use
port 25 and get the messages first. I guess my questions are:

For users using POP or custom applications that are using the Exchange
IMC as their relay host, how will changing the ports affect them? Have
I just disabled POP by installing XWall?

We have locked down all unused ports so I guess I need to open port 24
up to the front end and back end servers as well.

Is there anything I need to be careful about or any other gotchas that I
should know.

Exchange Limits

2003-11-03 Thread Doug Schaible

Exchange 2000 SP3

Any suggestions on setting size limits on both the SMTP virtual server and
on idividual mailboxes? I had originally set a 4mb limit on the SMTP and
200mb limit mailboxes, which no one complained about for 4 years. Some
select staff complained and corporate had me remove both limits.

I'm looking for ammunition to bolster my case to reinstate the limits. Do
any of you use these settings, if so where do you set them?

Thanks for your help!

Excuse me. Symantec said they weren't aware of any virus that can put dummy
addresses in the To and From fields? I find that hard to believe since the
Klez virus, among others, does this very thing and they are certainly aware
of that virus.

As for your original issue about the spam delete the messages that you know
are spam and re-check your open relay situation. It sounds like there is a
hole somewhere that you didn't plug. Check Q articles

crashed on me twice :)

The first one is pretty straightforward.

Exchange 2000 SP3

Any suggestions on setting size limits on both the SMTP virtual server
and on idividual mailboxes? I had originally set a 4mb limit on the
SMTP and 200mb limit mailboxes, which no one complained about for 4
years. Some select staff complained and corporate had me remove both
limits.

I'm looking for ammunition to bolster my case to reinstate the limits.
Do any of you use these settings, if so where do you set them?

Thanks for your help!

Adding items from a Public Folder Calendar to Personal Calendar

2003-11-03 Thread RBHATIA
I have been looking around SlipStick for a solution to add items from a
Public Folder Calendar to a Personal Calendar automatically but couldn't
find anything simple (my users are a little non-technical).
I have a public folder calendar where staff post deadlines and upcoming
events related to the company.
Some staff who are concerned with these events would like to be able to add
all these items automatically to their personal calendar. Is this possible ?
I explored the possiblity of using Folder Administration to send the
appointment to all users and then use Rules Wizard to automatically add the
appointment to my Calendar. IS there another way to do this ?

RE: Move E2K servers between AD containers?

2003-11-03 Thread Brian Davies
Brent,

Computers isn't a container in AD - it's a folder and therefore can't have
a policy applied to it. The only policy that will apply to Computers is
the default domain policy so it doesn't matter where you move your Exchange
server the default domain policy will still be applied unless you block
policy inheritance on the OU you put the Exchange servers into, but then you
must re-apply all the required policy objects on the new OU. Yes you can
move servers to any OU you like but you must make sure the right policies are
being applied.

I was just taking a look at Xwall and it does in fact look pretty good.

Questions:
What operating system are you running it on?
Does it need a separate SMTP server to be running or does it provide its
own? If it needs another, what do you suggest?

Free/Busy issue removing last 5.5 server in the site

2003-11-03 Thread v . nicholson
Hi Everyone,
I have one 5.5 server, which also happens to be the first server in the
site, that I would like to remove. I have two other Exchange 2000 servers
in the site. I followed the instuctions and made sure there was a replica
of the Free/Busy folder (among others) on one of the Exchange 2000
servers. When I shut down all of the services on the old 5.5 server for a
test, I start to see errors on the server without the replica. Event ID
8207 Souce MSExchangeFBPublish. It inidicated it had a problem getting the
data from the old 5.5 server.

I decided to replicate the folder to that server as well (however, I
think that you should only have one version of the folder in a site - is
this correct?). I let it replicate over the weekend, and then this
morning I tried it again. I am seeing the same error, but this time it
indicates it is having a problem with the public store on itself. If I
turn the services on the old server back on, the error goes away. At no
point have I had any reported client issues when the error is logged.

I looked at technet article 824282, but I don't think it applies, as the
problem goes away when the orignal server is on. I think I have some sort
of replication issue, but I am not sure what it is. Checking the public
folder on the Exchange 2000 server, it says the Schedule+ Free Busy folder
has replicated. Has anyone else seen this? If anyone has a pointer for
me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Virginia

HELP E2k and E2k3

2003-11-03 Thread Raji Arulambalam
Hi

I have a single Exchange 2000 server that used the default SMTP VS to
deliver and pick up internet mail from a smart host. Which worked fine.
I wanted to upgrade to E2k3, so installed a new second server and installed
E2k3 on this. Install worked fine. I moved a test user to the new server.
This test user is able to send mail messages out but is unable to recieve
messages from the Internet. The sender gets a NDR saying undiliverable
because of a mail loop , Status: 4.4.6.

I also noticed that messages between the two servers is being sent out to
the smart host by the first E2k server and keeps looping.

Do I have to configure the default SMTP VS on the second E2k3 server? OR do
I remove the smart host settings from the 1st server and configure a SMTP
Connector to send and receive Internet mail from the smart host.?

Help Please.

Cheers

Raji

EX5.5: can't get rid of TURFTABLE??

2003-11-03 Thread Alverson, Tom
I noticed a message in the turf directory that was probably legitimate (from
american airlines) and looked at my turftable entries to see why it was
rejected. Sure enough, I had aa.com in there so I deleted it and restarted
the IMC (putting the offending message back into the inbound dir while the
IMC was stoppted). It turf'ed it again? I thought maybe the turftable on
our other server (first server in org, but all mailboxes moved off of it) so
I removed it there and restarted both IMC's. It got turf'ed again... I
then removed ALL entries from the turftable of both server and restarted
both IMC's. Still gets turf'ed. What is going on here? Is there another
service I need to stop and start? I don't want to reboot right now, but can
later if necessary.

You can temporarily rename the message to .eml and open it to check it out

That's what the default recipient policy does and you probably should not
mess with it. Why do these SMTP and X.400 addresses bother you so much?

Also if you really, really don't want you contacts to be stamped with the
policy's e-mail addresses, go to each contact's properties, click on the
E-mail addresses tab and then un-check the option that applies the policy
settings.

Now, how are you routing mail to the sister companies? Does mail from the
Internet to the sister companies arrive first to your Exchange environment
(i.e. do the sister companies' MX records point to your Exchange server?) If
that is the case, then you want to have the e-mail addresses created by the
default policy.

Hi all,

I have a container with lots of contacts from sister companies. I just
noticed that they all got an additonal SMTP/X.400 address, apparently that
is caused by my default policy.
The filter for that policy just says (mailnickname=*) and I can't change
the filter as the [Modify] button is dimmed.

What can I do to prevent the policy from messing with my contacts?

Thanks and regards,

Subject: Free/Busy issue removing last 5.5 server in the site

Hi Everyone,
I have one 5.5 server, which also happens to be the first server in the
site, that I would like to remove. I have two other Exchange 2000 servers
in the site. I followed the instuctions and made sure there was a replica
of the Free/Busy folder (among others) on one of the Exchange 2000 servers.
When I shut down all of the services on the old 5.5 server for a test, I
start to see errors on the server without the replica. Event ID
8207 Souce MSExchangeFBPublish. It inidicated it had a problem getting the
data from the old 5.5 server.

I decided to replicate the folder to that server as well (however, I think
that you should only have one version of the folder in a site - is this
correct?). I let it replicate over the weekend, and then this morning I
tried it again. I am seeing the same error, but this time it indicates it
is having a problem with the public store on itself. If I turn the services
on the old server back on, the error goes away. At no point have I had any
reported client issues when the error is logged.

Thanks!
Virginia

vacation forever and resign as an Exchange administrator. You NEVER use a
reply rule as an out of office notification.

RE: Exchange Limits

2003-11-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
There are many reasons to enforce size limits in an
organization. Many reasons center around storage and
backup considerations. Performance can be hampered the
larger mailboxes are, too.

One very important yet frequently overlooked issue is
SECURITY. Without size limitations, and depending on
other factors, there are certain DDoS attacks that can
result in rendering a whole Exchange Information Store
inaccessible.

One approach you might want to consider is educating
your users about the use of Personal Folders.

Exchange 2000 SP3

Any suggestions on setting size limits on both the
SMTP virtual server and
on idividual mailboxes? I had originally set a 4mb
limit on the SMTP and
200mb limit mailboxes, which no one complained about
for 4 years. Some
select staff complained and corporate had me remove
both limits.

I'm looking for ammunition to bolster my case to
reinstate the limits. Do
any of you use these settings, if so where do you set
them?

Thanks for your help!

Attachment Exclusions During Backups?

2003-11-03 Thread kschmitz
Is anyone familiar with a backup package for Exchange 2K/2003 that would
allow you to exclude specific file attachments from a brick level backup?
Senior management has recently raised legal concerns over the retention of
voicemails created through unified messaging and they have challenged me
to present options. Short of scraping my entire UM strategy, does anyone
know of a package with thie capability?

Thanks in advance,

Kelly

Subject: default recipient policy issue

Thanks and regards,
Uso
