RE: SPAM blockin software recommendations..... [bcc]

2003-03-24 Thread King, John
Not to be too redundant here, but I have been running Postfix on a Slackware
box as a corporate SMTP gateway. I would highly recommend Postfix for such
an application. The benefits of such a system are RBL checks on incoming
mail, low overhead, and with rrd one can produce pretty little graphs(to
show management). Recently Spam had become a major problem for us, as many
others I am sure. I decided to implement SpamAssasin with Postfix in
advanced filtering mode. There is plenty of documentation on different
filtering techniques with Postfix. Since 2/12/03 SpamAssassin has caught
10143 pieces of UCE with a very low false positive rate. The best part
about the system is it costs our company $0. Just some thoughts on non
commercial software.

It seems the idiots are getting better all the time :-)..
I don't run Postfix myself so I can't really comment on the paper you refer

Take a look at www.postfix.org too, I personally check several sources to
find out if a certain piece of information is true. Which does not mean I
don't trust Advosys but I'd rather check it all the same. They may have
forgotten some information you may need.

RE: SPAM blockin software recommendations.....

2003-03-24 Thread Paul Hutchings
Well, setting it up now (again after a play install this morning).

I don't wish to turn this into a Postfix list so if anyone can help and
would care to answer off-list:

At present my box is on the LAN, if I've called it relay.mira.co.uk and I
want it to accept any mail for the mira.co.uk domain and forward it to
otherserver.mira.co.uk do I use virtual domains or, as I think, transport
mappings?

Reason I ask is that the transport mappings don't appear to work if I use
the format domain.com smtp:[otherserver.mira.co.uk]

We use the www.tummy.com server distro of Redhat. Strips out the GUI which we don't
need and don't want, and gives us an updated server CD once a month. Plus the folks

RE: SPAM blockin software recommendations.....

2003-03-18 Thread Hurst, Paul
I would say it depends on the company, as my last place we had 15 Exch
Admins just for the UK, god know how many more in the US Europe, Asia. Each
of different levels and responsibilities for different areas of Exchange
(backup, external, interconnection with notes, basic admin,
security/encryption, hardware/OS), so I would have thought it depends on the
site structure if they would need to know.

Cheers

Start using Sendmail and you'll find out more then you ever wanted to know
about DNS.

You'll have to learn it sooner or later so it'll better be sooner..

RE: SPAM blockin software recommendations.....

2003-03-14 Thread John Orban
I guess we're kind of lucky. Our ISP filters all our mail before
delivering it to our Exchange server AND he doesn't charge us for it
(makes sense if you think about it - he's saving bandwidth as much as we
are). I don't know of all the rules he uses but there are two: reverse
DNS lookup and checking the HELO greeting against the RFC. If the mail
fails either one it never comes across the wire to his server.

Needless to say we have a number of irate parents who complain that they
can't get mail through but in EVERY case it was a misconfigured email
server on their end.

For those who absolutely MUST get mail through, I have a separate school
account set up with the ISP on a non-spam basis, configured so that
Outlook will check it every 5 minutes. So the end-user gets an email
alert when new mail comes into that account.

They really don't know that the account exists so they can't use it to
register for free stuff on the web.

Some crap still gets through, but iHateSpam does a pretty good job of
stopping the few pieces that do.

I have issues with anyone blocking my mail for me unless I have access to
that blocked mail. Too many chances for a false positive.
As an example, we forced reverse lookups on our mail server once. That is
until we figured out our most important client could no longer email us. Now
we cant very well tell them sorry, your mail server is messed up. You have
to fix it before you can email us.

Reviewing the catch takes about 60 minutes on Monday, 15
 minutes on other days.

Its a FAST scan of headers only. Only when a header falls
outside of normal standards of spam, do we zoom in for a
closer look. Or if the spam looks interesting. ;) As we've
done it more, we've gotten better at it. I can go through
1500 spams (a typical overnight) in 15 minutes flat, just
paging up in Outlook looking at headers. If something is
unusual, it now just jumps out of the background at me. Same
 for my colleagues.

If a spam gets through and a user sends it to us as something
which made it through our filters, we forward it (with
original headers) back in to the filters to train them to
recognize similar stuff in the future. In the rare case of a
false positive, we do the same thing, but with a different switch.

RE: SPAM blockin software recommendations.....

2003-03-14 Thread Roger Seielstad
I'd disagree with both your assessment of sendmail. It took about an hour to
configure 4 OpenBSD systems to route mail for about 12 domains, and include
both whitelist and blacklist entries for addresses and servers. Its also
easy to set to run in a protected shell environment.

Qmail isn't all that much easier to configure. Either way, if you don't
understand DNS, and I mean REALLY understand DNS with respect to mail flow,
neither will work correctly.

Sendmail isn't easy to setup, or administrator. We ran
Sendmail for years out in the DMZ, so I speak from much
experience. If you must run Sendmail, then I recommend the
commercially supported Sendmail Switch, which will run on
Windows 2000, and is available from
 http://www.sendmail.com/products/msmgr_routing.shtml. It
comes with a web interface, and for someone who isn't Unix
 experienced, is at least, doable.

My biggest issue with Sendmail is that is a HUGE security
risk - it has a new massive security hole about once every
six months. Due to the nature of its design - one size fits
all - and that it runs damn near everything as root, I would
say it is impossible to every be truly secure.

Last week, for example, a new hole was discovered and
received world-wide publicity: a buffer overflow, which was
accessible simply by sending a specially constructed email
with a malformed TO, CC, or BCC line to a non-patched
Sendmail server. When exploited, it gave root control of the
 Sendmail server to the attacker.

I recommend qmail, which is not only highly secure - it has
NEVER had a security breach - but is also at least 4-5 times
as fast as Sendmail, and much, much easier to set up and configure.

DNS lookup and checking the HELO greeting against the RFC. If the mail
fails either one it never comes across the wire to his server.
A messed up reverse DNS does not mean it's spam. I've seen way to much spam
from sources with good reverse DNS, still spam. I rather trust procmail on
Linux to filter, I can take a look at the spamsuspect box and kill all the
spam. At least I don't loose business and my customers are happy too.

Needless to say we have a number of irate parents who complain that they
can't get mail through but in EVERY case it was a misconfigured email
server on their end.
Good point! But not clever in a business enviroment.

I'd disagree with both your assessment of sendmail. It took
 about an hour to
configure 4 OpenBSD systems to route mail for about 12
 domains, and include
both whitelist and blacklist entries for addresses and
 servers. Its also
easy to set to run in a protected shell environment.

Qmail isn't all that much easier to configure. Either way, if
 you don't
understand DNS, and I mean REALLY understand DNS with respect
 to mail flow,
 neither will work correctly.

My biggest issue with Sendmail is that is a HUGE security

say it is impossible to every be truly secure.

RE: SPAM blockin software recommendations.....

2003-03-13 Thread Wendel, Jesse
Reviewing the catch takes about 60 minutes on Monday, 15 minutes on other days.

Its a FAST scan of headers only. Only when a header falls outside of normal standards
of spam, do we zoom in for a closer look. Or if the spam looks interesting. ;) As
we've done it more, we've gotten better at it. I can go through 1500 spams (a typical
overnight) in 15 minutes flat, just paging up in Outlook looking at headers. If
something is unusual, it now just jumps out of the background at me. Same for my
colleagues.

If a spam gets through and a user sends it to us as something which made it through
our filters, we forward it (with original headers) back in to the filters to train
them to recognize similar stuff in the future. In the rare case of a false positive,
we do the same thing, but with a different switch.

Jesse

I'm a admin for both Sendmail and Exchange, and not just 2 of each.. I
don't think Sendmail is harder then Exchange, in fact I think it's easier.
Hmmm but I do have Linux experience, on Linux I refuse to use anything that
looks a GUI. Nothing beats vi or pico.

My biggest issue with Sendmail is that is a HUGE security risk - it has a
new massive security hole about once every six months. Due to the nature

Yeah, sure, but almost everything you say goes for Exchange too, security
issues, need to patch frequently.. one size fits all..
Sendmail configuration is just compile and install it, install your own .cf
(created from one file and added what you need).
Sendmail security has improved much, right know only a part runs as root,
the other as smmsp (an user with almost no privs at all).

Last week, for example, a new hole was discovered and received world-wide
publicity: a buffer overflow, which was accessible simply by sending a
specially constructed email with a malformed TO, CC, or BCC line to a
non-patched Sendmail server. When exploited, it gave root control of the

I think an MS admin has other things to worry about right now. I think I
remember there is a new code red..

I recommend qmail, which is not only highly secure - it has NEVER had a
security breach - but is also at least 4-5 times as fast as Sendmail, and

Now here we finally agree.. qmail has had no security issues at all (not
that I'm aware of). You may want to think about Postfix too..

When it comes to security it doesn't really matter which OS you run. We
need to patch both Windows and Linux.

Everything I could think of in favor of one of them is left out. I don't
intend to start a discussion about which OS is the best or the most secure.
For everyone who do want to discuss this there are newsgroups like
alt.computer.linux.advocacy and alt.computer.windows.advocacy or something
like that.

I think you should check into TrendMicros' IMSS product if you're using

out there to catch spam, but it's costly and it catches too much until
you customize it fit into your environment.

Good Morning,

I am currently using Trend eManager to block SPAM(in trial version
still), it is not appearing to be very effective. What are some other
options for blocking SPAM?

Thanks in advance.

What level of time is involved from the admin side with that? 10k messages a

awefully time intensive.

Out in the dmz we use qmail with a loop to spamassassin, for
inbound traffic to our internal Exchange organization.

If the email is ranked as spam, the envelope gets rewritten
and sent inbound to a quarantine mailbox which gets reviewed
daily by staff. We're grabbing over 10,000 spams per week,
with less than one (1) false positive per week (yes, that is
over 1/10,000 or better than . of reliability!)

And with the Bayesian filters -
 http://www.paulgraham.com/antispam.html - enabled by default,
spamassassin automatically learns what is spam for our
enterprise, and what isn't. Not to mention that we can and
do train the filters specifically for both non-spam (ham) and spam.

Our users love us. And we love both qmail and spamassassin.

cause us a problem).

RE: SPAM blockin software recommendations.....

2003-03-12 Thread zz Exchange List Servers (Swynk)
I would recommend MX Logic's MX Spam Guard service.
http://www.mxlogic.com

In MX Logic lab tests the service catches 98.5% of spam with a false
positive rate of 0.4% vs. Trend ScanMail eManager at 38% and false
positve rate of 0.5%. Plus, administration of releasing quarantined
false positives can be pushed to the users. The service starts at $0.75
per mailbox per month. I love ScanMail, but why pay for something like
the eManager plug-in that doesn't work?

Subject: SPAM blockin software recommendations.

Good Morning,

I am currently using Trend eManager to block SPAM(in trial version
still),
it is not appearing to be very effective.
What are some other options for blocking SPAM?

Thanks in advance.

Brian
